ADULT EDUCATION & HIGH SCHOOL COMPLETION American Citizenship Preparation

These classes prepare adults to pass the American Citizenship Test, with a special emphasis on questions used by the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). Employer Services

Local businesses can customize cost-effective training packages in literacy and English-as-a-SecondLanguage (ESL), customer service, Microsoft Office, or manufacturing that meet their workforce development needs. Training can be provided in the workplace or at a convenient EASTCONN adult education site. If buildings are temporarily closed due to COVID-19, classes will transition to online. Adult Education offers three alternatives for completing a high school education. Our counselors can help adults determine which program is the best option. IET (Integrated Education and Training)

IET is an innovative education model that integrates basic-skills adult education with technical instruction. The curriculum is jointly designed by certified adult education instructors and specialists in the manufacturing field. Classes are co-taught by adult education and technical training instructors. The program helps students prepare for the GED; earn the manufacturing industry-recognized Certified Production Technician Certification and create a digital portfolio demonstrating work-readiness skills. JET (Jobs, Education & Training) for 17-24-year-olds

Get a JET start on your future! Explore career options and participate in paid internships and on-the-job training. Improve your work-readiness skills and learn about résumé writing, dressing for success, interview techniques and more. Adult & Community Programs

Life Skills & Basic Skills Instruction

Intended for adults who are at least 17, who are no longer enrolled in high school, and who lack a high school diploma, this free, skills-enhancement program will help students improve their math, reading, writing and technology skills. The program offers a free evaluation, individual counseling to create a customized learning plan and convenient day/evening classes. Non-Traditional Learner Program

EASTCONN provides non-traditional clients with technology-rich classes to prepare them for the GED exam and/or improve their English reading, writing and speaking skills. Regional Management of Mandated Adult Education Programs

We manage all aspects of your mandated adult education programs, including grant submission, fiscal management, participant recruitment, assessment services, instructional services, post-program assessment and reporting. Transitions for 21st Century Careers: Workforce Readiness

This multi-faceted program provides support and guidance for current adult education students as well as adult education graduates. These services include: embedded classroom support for career pathway development within the GED, CDP and ESL programs; program-wide transitions events; visits to local post-secondary programs with appropriate referrals and counseling; guest speakers; and contextualized academic instruction in manufacturing and health care content areas. Adult & Community Programs Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program

Volunteer tutors work with adult learners on basic reading, writing, math or English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) skills. Tutoring, provided free of charge, can be on a one-to-one basis or in a classroom setting. Tutoring is offered at multiple sites in EASTCONN-region towns. EMPLOYMENT & TRAINING PROGRAMS Connecticut Youth Employment & Training Program

Youth, ages 14-24, have an opportunity to participate in paid, project-based learning opportunities at individual and group community work sites to learn career pathway, communication and financial literacy skills. Customer Service & Sales Academy

Course participants will prepare for the nationally recognized National Retail Foundation’s Customer Service and Sales credential. This credential will help entry-level sales and service associates learn skills related to front-line work in retail (or any industry that values customer service and sales skills). Individuals taking the course will learn about products and services; assessing and meeting customer needs; preparing for selling, gaining customer commitment and closing the sale; store operations and inventory control; the process of merchandising; the importance of common employability skills; and how to craft a polished résumé. With locations in Danielson, Willimantic and Montville, the American Job Centers provide employment assistance to job seekers. Assistance includes employment/career guidance, job search information, potential training funding for eligible applicants, an ongoing connection to employer recruitment opportunities and on-the-job training opportunities. Health Careers Advancement Program

Health Profession Opportunity Grants (HPOG) provide opportunities for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) recipients and other low-income individuals to enter and advance along four healthcare career pathways, including patient care and nursing, emergency medicine, community health and patient navigation, and health information management. Participants increase their employability in health careers through a series of preparatory programs that include classes in work-readiness, skills-building, job training, and community college. Manufacturing Academy

Course participants will prepare for Manufacturing Skill Standards Council’s (MSSC’s) Certified Production Technician Certification which provides entry-level certification in the field of manufacturing. This program prepares students for successful complete of all five individual certificate assessments: Safety, Quality Practices & Measurement, Manufacturing Processes & Production, Maintenance Awareness, and Green Production (not part of full CPT Certification). Earning the first 4 certificates, qualifies participants to receive the full CPT 4.0 Certification. The Connecticut Accreditation Quality Improvement System (AQIS) is an established resource system of regional teams providing critical leadership and support for the achievement of quality standards and excellence in early childhood programs. AQIS services include overviews of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Program Standards and Accreditation Performance Criteria; technical assistance with the process of accreditation; and individualized support for programs engaged in the self-study. Early Childhood Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS)

Our certified CLASS staff are available to observe, record and provide feedback for your preK classrooms on the dimensions of emotional support, classroom organization and instructional support. CLASS has scientifically identified specific early experiences that children need in order to succeed in school and life. It has organized these experiences into teacher classroom behaviors that are observable and that support high-quality care and education. Early Childhood Council Facilitation & Strategic Planning

EASTCONN staff with experience in community collaboration, early childhood policy and practice, as well as comprehensive services, will work with your community to support the development and implementation of an Early Childhood Council. Our staff can also serve as your school-readiness liaison to the Connecticut Office of Early Childhood, or fulfill the role of schoolreadiness monitor for your state-funded program. CT DOTS Online is the only system specifically designed to meet the data entry and analysis demands required by the state Office of Early Childhood DOTS child-progress framework. Early childhood professionals now have a paper-free method of observing children, collecting evidence/ artifacts and evaluating their skills against a standard set of indicators. Early Head Start

EASTCONN administers the Early Head Start program in Windham and Tolland Counties. This program serves income-eligible pregnant women and children, birth to age 3, and their families, in home-visiting and year-round center-based programs. EASTCONN offers Early Head Start programming in northeastern Connecticut and Windham County, while Windham Public Schools provides a centerbased program for the greater Windham area. Stafford Public Schools offers a home-based program in the Stafford area. Head Start

Early intervention services are provided in the home or community, in conjunction with families, for young children identified with diagnosed conditions or developmental delays. Services are centered around coaching, modeling, parent support, referrals, collaboration with other providers/services, and transition to the school system or other programs when a child turns 3 years old. EASTCONN administers Head Start, a comprehensive, federally-funded program for income-eligible preschool-age children and their families in Windham and Tolland counties. Center-based programs are available in Killingly, Plainfield, Putnam and Windham. A home-based program is available to families in Tolland County. Head Start incorporates a strong family involvement component, ensuring that families are involved in their child’s education. ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS

Faces of Culture

How do our individual cultures, traditions, histories and beliefs inform how we view the world and our part in it? What can we do to be courageous and kind global citizens? America’s Mosaic brings together culturally and economically diverse students in grades 7 and 8 from different school districts to help answer these pertinent questions and, in the process, create a more diverse and culturally competent community of learners. Students enrolled in Faces of Culture explore the many peoples and cultures that make up our nation through a hands-on, minds-on exploration of their culture-specific arts. Activities improve students’ cultural competence and promote positive relationships through a series of experiential exercises that encourage teamwork, positive communication, critical thinking, problem-solving skills and collaborative habits. Farming Our Land & Sea

America’s Mosaic

The EASTCONN Mobile STEM Lab is EASTCONN’s newest STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) learning resource for teachers and students in pre-K through grade 12. The Mobile STEM Lab travels to schools and recreational areas throughout Connecticut. On the Mobile STEM Lab, students enjoy access to sophisticated, state-of-the-art STEM equipment and engage in learning experiences that address Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) topics, such as watersheds, biodiversity, climate change, feeding the hungry, water waste treatment and robotics. Students enrolled in Farming Our Land & Sea investigate how food is raised, processed, and consumed across the globe – and what that reveals about cultures, economies, human settlement, migration, and changing world views. Students explore new concepts, and engage in scientific exploration of the food cycle – from growth, production, and distribution to putting the family meal on the table. Farming Our Land & Sea promotes cultural competencies among young learners through a complement of experiential activities and a series of mindful practices geared towards developing social and emotional understanding and regulation in the self and others. Forensic Detectives

Forensic Detectives brings together culturally and economically diverse students from different school districts to work together to develop scientific inquiry skills and improve their knowledge in targeted academic standards while learning to use technology tools to solve a series of simulated investigations. Students also incorporate mindful practices into their learning and interactions to improve their self-regulation and group participation skills when working independently and within groups. Forensic Detectives improves students’ cultural competence and promotes positive relationships through a series of experiential exercises. These encourage teamwork, positive communication and problem-solving skills. Students learn to appreciate the value of different perspectives and establish meaningful relationships that extend beyond their classrooms and school communities. Interdistrict Program Design & Management

EASTCONN collaborates with area school districts to respond to CSDE-funded Interdistrict Grant opportunities designed to boost students’ academic skills and increase their understanding and experiences of diversity. Mindful Transformations

Mindful Transformations brings together culturally and economically diverse students in grade 4 from different school districts. Activities and workshops help participants develop resources in self-understanding, acceptance, communication and goal setting. Students’ cultural understanding expands through a complement of experiential activities and mindful practices geared toward developing social and emotional understanding and regulation in the self and others. CLINICAL, DEVELOPMENTAL & THERAPEUTIC SERVICES Clinical, Developmental & Therapeutic Programs, K-12

Offered at two conveniently located sites across northeastern Connecticut, EASTCONN’s well-respected Clinical, Developmental & Therapeutic Program is designed for K-12 students who need a highly structured, supportive, therapeutic environment in order to achieve academic and behavioral success. The main goal of this program is to help students acquire the academic, social, emotional and behavioral skills necessary to successfully return to their local public schools, or to a less restrictive environment. Our dedicated, caring staff offer individualized instruction with a multi-modality approach and high-interest materials. Four core components are at the heart of this program: educational services, clinical support services, vocational services and family/community involvement. MAGNET SCHOOLS AND OTHER OPTIONS FOR STUDENTS ACT Performing Arts Magnet High School

ACT (Arts at the Capitol Theater) is a full-day, comprehensive, public, performing arts magnet high school located in the Capitol Theater in downtown Willimantic. Curriculum and instruction is guided by a personalized, competency based framework. Students engage in integrated arts projects. Instruction is personalized to address individual learning needs. Students study with certified academic teachers and professional artists in this small, arts-focused learning community. Each grade is limited to approximately 35 students, making this an intimate, focused, artistic learning environment for students in grades 9-12. Located on the Quinebaug Valley Community College campus in Danielson, QMC is a public, magnet high school open to all Connecticut residents in grades 9-12. Students attend QMC at no cost to them; funding is provided by the sending district. The overarching theme of QMC is that of the middle college experience. Neuropsychology Services

This program provides a highly structured, intensive and individualized classroom experience for children in preK-grade 12 with autism spectrum disorders and other developmental disabilities. Students are supported by a multidisciplinary team, which includes a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), an occupational therapist, a speech-language pathologist, a physical therapist and assistive technology specialists. Psychological and Behavioral Consultation Services (PBCS) offers comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations to identify a child’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses, determine how a child learns best, and outline appropriate and beneficial intervention strategies. Assessments are selected to address specific referral questions and could evaluate attention, memory, language, problem-solving, visual skills, executive functioning and other cognitive functions. With a fleet of 140-plus vehicles that include GPS tracking and two-way radios or cell phones depending on the type of vehicle, EASTCONN offers day-to-day transportation and “yellow bus” services for both regular and special education students traveling to destinations ranging from local areas to neighboring states.
