EASTCONN Presents: A Leadership Symposium with Dr. Ellie Drago-Severson, Teachers College, Columbia University “Leading for Adult Development: Effective Strategies for Supporting Capacity Building in Schools, Districts, and Organizations” Around the globe, leaders in schools and within systems face unprecedented demands that are arguably adaptive in nature. These murkier kinds of challenges, which are complex and harder to define require something different from leaders. Unlike technical challenges, which can be addressed by increasing skills, knowledge, and expertise, the mounting adaptive challenges that practicing and aspiring principals face in education require new internal capacities and approaches.

Prosocial Behavior Development – An Introduction

Creating a Growth Mindset for Developing Student Learning Goals

This session will provide a model for prosocial skill and behavioral development, which has application for both students and the adults who teach them. Integrating elements of character education, social emotional learning and mindfulness, participants will learn: • A framework for understanding prosocial behavior development • Research that supports the value of teaching these practices directly to students and educators • Specific activities they can bring back to their schools and districts

As districts continue to move from compliance to coherence when implementing educator evaluation and support systems, approaching the development of student learning goals with a growth mindset can be a key leverage tool to improve student learning. During this three-hour training, participants will learn to: Identify school-wide student learning goals that have the greatest leverage to improve student learning. Communicate those goals to staff and engage them in determining their collective contributions to advance student learning. Implement effective goal-setting strategies that encourage collaboration and shared responsibility for positive student outcomes. Teams of at least three educators are encouraged. This workshop is no cost to participants thanks to CSDE funding.

Communities of Practice We will create a professional learning community that engages administrators for learning within a supportive, selfcreated community. Administrators will interact, test ideas, challenge their inferences and interpretations, and process new information with each other. As new ideas are analyzed, multiple sources of knowledge and expertise will expand and test the new concepts as part of the learning experience. Examination of the five dimensions of professional learning communities will structure our examinations of current problems of practice. Four additional dates will be scheduled with participants at the first meeting.

CSDE Foundational Skills for Evaluators of Teachers The newly revised CSDE Foundational Skills for Evaluators of Teachers training is designed to concentrate on the evaluator’s capacity to observe and analyze teacher performance and practice inherent in the CT Common Core of Teaching (CCT) and to provide supportive, high quality feedback to teachers. The primary focus of this training is on written feedback that focuses on areas of strengths and areas of growth explicitly connected to the rubric and observable classroom practices/evidence.

The training is designed to link written feedback to verbal feedback and coaching strategies. This supports not only the evaluator’s ability to organize written feedback but consider how this feedback creates a platform for formal conferences that are instructionally focused, dialogic, and student-centered.

DIGITAL LEARNING Gamification: A Place to Start

The Internet is Trying to Get You: Malware Awareness

This session will discuss how to introduce elements of game play into all types of activities as an approach to increasing attention and productive time on task. Not strictly limited to the classroom, gamification is an approach to introducing goals, constructive constraints, economies and tokens into all learning contexts. Although packaged games offer some interesting options, the ability to recast learning goals as game goals specific to your context supports a best-fit solution. Come play with us! Learn how to spot virus and malware and how to keep your PC free from them. We will explore the many ways that viruses and malware can infiltrate your PC, sometimes without you even knowing it. Minecraft: An Introduction for Educators Minecraft is a global phenomenon, and one of the most popular video games of all time. An immersive first-person avatar-driven “sandbox” game, Minecraft offers a huge degree of player freedom. It is not uncommon for younger players to tell teachers and parents, “You can do anything you want” when asked about the game goals, leading to vast confusion among many adults as to what the game is about. This session is designed to provide a complete introduction to the game, from installation, play options, and shared play to an understanding of how game goals are adopted and achieved, through setting the stage for learning activities.

Minecraft: Environment Design Minecraft provides a huge degree of freedom in goals and activities for its players, a major factor in its current success. The same creative freedom can give educators and parents the opportunity to design environments for learning, supporting beneficial constraints in activity. This session will guide participants through the process of designing multiplayer environments, and creating opportunities for rich interactions.

Supporting Social Studies in the PreK-K Classrooms This session is designed to take an in-depth look at supporting Social Studies utilizing the CT ELDS and CT Social Studies Frameworks for Kindergarten and how to integrate Social Studies in other content areas.

This is a four part professional learning community. During these sessions we will have a chance to collaborate with our peers, share our strategies we use, receive feedback on them and discuss specific special education topics we address in our programs. This is a great opportunity to be able to share, collaborate and learn with your peers.

As a result of taking part in this workshop, participants will: • Learn how to support Social Studies curriculum by designing a unit of study, starting with a big idea. • Integrate the CT ELDS and CT Social Studies Frameworks for Kindergarten to enhance social studies curriculum. • Utilize Webb’s Depth of Knowledge to promote inquiry through exploration of Social Studies topics. • Incorporate social studies learning experiences in other content areas

Increasing and Linking Standards for Vocabulary in the CT ELDS and Common Core Classroom: PreK-Grade 2 Learn to increase vocabulary using an evidence-based approach to learning in your classroom. Vocabulary forms a divide between children who succeed and those who do not, especially between poor children and their privileged counterparts. Creating a Calm Classroom: Helping Children to Self-Regulate Throughout Their School Day

Investigating Science with Young Children This workshop will explore science activities teachers can use in the classroom to support the CT ELDS for Preschool and the Next Generation Science Standards for Kindergarten. We will also focus on how science can be explored in other content areas.

Children learn at their highest potential when their emotions and bodies are calm and focused. Maintaining this state throughout a school day can be challenging for many children. This workshop will examine some of the reasons for these challenges as well as assisting teaches to help maintain balance for children during their “academic day.”

Big Ideas and Essential Questions Revisited Have you ever wished that there was a follow-up training that would help you refine and monitor your implementation of new learning? Well, this workshop is for you! The training is designed to review using big ideas and essential questions to promote higher order thinking, critique your current work using peer review, and provide guided practice on writing a unit of study on a standard you have not yet addressed. Enhance your understanding of the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework to assist in the design of instructional goals, practices, assessments, and resources that can be customized to meet the individual needs of all students.

A text set is a collection of related texts organized around a topic or line of inquiry determined by an anchor text. In a wellconstructed set, the texts are meaningfully connected and “talk to one another” so that in reading the set, students will: build or deepen their knowledge about a topic, make meaningful connections between texts of varying genres, and engage in the reading of authentic and rich text.

iNQUIRY iNSTITUTE (i2): Think Differently! Looking for ways to engage and inspire your students? If so, come and join us for this three-part series on the inquiry process. Partner with EASTCONN’s Education Specialists and area educators to design lessons and learning activities that foster students’ curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking. Day 1: Oct. 11, 2016 – Teachers will explore the meaning, purpose, and role of inquiry in their classrooms. Day 2: Nov. 8, 2016 – Teachers will learn strategies to plan for and implement inquiry in their classrooms. Day 3: Mar. 10, 2017 – Teachers will further their understanding of the role of formative and summative assessment in inquiry and begin designing their own assessments.
