Employment & Training Clinical Medical Assistant Program – 150 Classroom Hours w/ a Clinical Externship

(classroom learning or online learning available) This program is intended for students who want to prepare for an exciting, challenging and rewarding career in healthcare. This program will train students to assist physicians by performing functions related to the clinical responsibilities of a medical office. Instruction includes preparing patients for examination and treatment, routine laboratory procedures, diagnostic

Introduction to Astronomy testing, technical aspects of phlebotomy and the cardiac life cycle. Students will review important topics including phlebotomy, pharmacology, the proper use and administration of medications, taking and documenting vital signs, cardiology including proper lead placements, professional workplace behavior, ethics and the legal aspects of healthcare. CPR certification is included in this program. This program includes 150 hours of classroom lecture, hands-on labs and a clinical externship opportunity at a local healthcare provider. To be eligible for the clinical rotation, students must successfully complete the 150-hour program, submit to a thorough background check, drug screening and meet other requirements. Dental Assisting Program (classroom learning and online learning available)

The 60-hour Dental Assisting Program prepares students for entry-level positions in one of the fastest growing health care positions – dental assisting. The purpose of this course is to familiarize students with all areas of pre-clinical dental assisting and provide training in the

professional skills required to function as an assistant in a dental practice. This course covers the following administrative key areas and topics: the history of dentistry and dental assisting; introduction to the dental office; the legal aspects of dentistry; and policies and guidelines. Clinical topics include: introduction to oral anatomy; dental operatory; dental equipment; introduction to tooth structure; primary and permanent teeth; the oral cavity and related structures; proper patient positioning; dental hand-pieces; sterilization; and other areas. Note: In addition to entry-level administrative jobs, this course is ideal for students interested in pursuing a formal dental hygienist program. Students who complete this program will have the opportunity to pursue the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) certified Dental Assistant (CDA) exam. Dialysis Technician Program (classroom learning and online learning available)

This 50-hour Dialysis Technician Program provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties required of dialysis technicians. Under the supervision of physicians and registered nurses, dialysis technicians operate kidney dialysis machines, prepare dialyzer reprocessing and delivery systems, and maintain and repair equipment. Furthermore, technicians work with patients during dialysis procedures to monitor and record vital signs, and administer local anesthetics and drugs as needed. Additionally, they may also be involved in training patients for at-home dialysis treatment. Note: This program does not include a national or state certification as part of its overall objectives. Additionally there is no student internship or clinical rotation offered as part of this program. This comprehensive, 50-hour EKG Technician Certification Program prepares students to function as EKG technicians and to take the American Society of Phlebotomy

EMPLOYMENT & TRAINING Technicians (ASPT) – Electrocardiograph (EKG) Technician Exam and other national certification exams. This course will include important practice and background information on anatomy and physiology of the heart, medical disease processes, medical terminology, medical ethics, legal aspects of patient contact, electrocardiography and stress testing. Additionally, students will practice with EKG equipment and perform hands on labs including introduction to the function and proper use of the EKG machine, the normal anatomy of the chest wall for proper lead placement, 12-lead placement and other clinical practices. This program includes a clinical externship rotation for all students and CPR certification. To be eligible for the clinical rotation, students must successfully complete the 50-hour program, submit to a thorough background check, drug screening and meet other requirements. Pharmacy Technician (online learning)

New

This online program prepares students for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Exam. The course, which is in candidate status for ASHP/ACPA accreditation, includes simulations and connects students with an externship partner at a local pharmacy (CVS or Walgreens) for the fulfillment of graduation requirements. Study topics include pharmacology, pharmaceutical calculations and nonsterile compounding, as well as pharmacy law, regulations and standards. In addition to one-onone instructor support, students will receive a laboratory kit, e-books, and an exam voucher. Time to complete this program is estimated to be 292 hours. Tuition cost includes a new laptop, access to a student advocate and job placement. $2,999

Phlebotomy Technician Certification Program w/ a Clinical Externship (classroom or online learning available) This 90 hour Phlebotomy Technician Program prepares professionals to collect blood specimens from clients for the purpose of laboratory analysis. Students will become familiar with all aspects related to blood collection and develop comprehensive skills to perform venipunctures completely and safely. Classroom and lab work includes terminology, anatomy and physiology; blood collection procedures; specimen hands-on practice; and training in

Physical Therapy Aide Program

This comprehensive, 70-hour Physical Therapy Aide Program prepares students for the growing field of physical therapy. Working under the direction of a physical therapist, a physical therapy aide is generally responsible for carrying out the non-technical duties of physical therapy, such as preparing treatment areas, ordering devices and supplies, and transporting patients. Furthermore, these workers assist physical therapists in providing services that help improve mobility, relieve pain, and prevent or limit permanent physical disabilities of patients suffering from injuries or disease. Physical therapy aides may be employed in nursing homes, hospitals, sports rehabilitation centers and some orthopedic clinics. Note: This program does not include a national or state certification as part of its overall objectives. This online program helps students prepare for the Certified Coding Associate (CCA) and Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification exams. Study topics include healthcare information management, reimbursement methodologies, medical terminology, anatomy, pathophysiology, and current code sets. In addition to personalized instructor and graduate support, students receive e-books, industry codebooks, access to an online reference library, and a voucher for one of the national certification exams. Veterinary Assistant Program w/ a Clinical Externship

This 100-hour Veterinary Assistant program introduces students to the exciting and growing field of veterinary medicine. Students will learn about the care of animals, as well as how to recognize signs of illness and disease. This program also covers interpersonal communication, interaction with clients and their animals, and how to assist the veterinarian during examinations. Administrative duties, such as fee collection, banking and accounts payable are also emphasized to provide the student with the skills necessary to maintain an efficient front office. Community Education Registration Information Registration:

Paid pre-registration is required for all classes. Registrations are processed on a first-come, firstserved, PAID basis. Classes run contingent upon PAID enrollment and may be cancelled or postponed due to insufficient registrations. If class is cancelled or postponed, you will be notified using the contact information you provide with your registration.

Payment:

Please make checks payable to “EASTCONN Community Education.” Phone and fax registrations accepted with VISA and MasterCard only.

Confirmation/Receipts:

All confirmations and receipts are sent via e-mail. If an e-mail address is not provided, you will not receive a confirmation. If class is cancelled and time permits, notification is provided via e-mail. In the event an e-mail is not provided and time permits, we will contact registrants via the phone number provided at the time of registration.

Refund Policy:

A full refund will be issued when EASTCONN Community Education cancels a course. If desired, a voucher may be issued to use at a later date. Please allow up to four weeks from cancellation to receive credit and/or voucher. Accessibility and Accommodation Requests: If you have a disability and require an accommodation in order to participate in any program or activity, please call 860-423-2591 at least two weeks prior to the class and/or event so that the appropriate arrangements may be made.

Weather Cancellations:

If EASTCONN and/or the school or site at which your class takes place is closed due to inclement weather, your class will not meet. Should bad weather develop during the day, class cancellations will be announced by late afternoon. Adult Education classes on page 11 of this catalog will be cancelled on WVIT NBC30 TV; or, listen to radio stations 98.3 FM, 97.5 FM, WINY 1350 AM, or WILI 1400 AM. Weather-related cancellations for all other Community Education classes will be listed on the home page of the EASTCONN website at www.eastconn.org, and on the Community Education Facebook page.
