Professional Learning for Educators Fall 2015

Center for Educational Leadership at EASTCONN presents

RICK WORMELI Standards-Based Grading: Myth-busting, Ethics and Practicality Don’t miss this chance to confront misconceptions and make the most of students’ learning! Mon., Nov. 23, 2015, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Holiday Inn Hartford East 100 East River Dr., East Hartford 06108 Some parents, colleagues, school board members, and business leaders struggle with what is and is not standards-based grading. Teachers and leaders using standards-based grading are facing some “pushback” from those with little background in it. As a result they are backing away from something unusually effective in teaching and learning. Whatever they are, current grading practices create very real futures; they better be accurate and ethical. Many traditional grading practices, unfortunately, are neither. This address presents the essential elements of standards-based grading, including its merits, potential pitfalls, and candid responses to the most common concerns regarding its use. Vetted by decades of work in the U.S. and around the world, we’ll correct the misconceptions and make a compelling case for standards-based grading. Audience: Administrators and all teachers Register by: 11/9/15 Course #: 1525300023 Certificates of Completion will be awarded to all attendees Register: http://rs.registereastconn.org/courses/view/id/12983 One of the first Nationally Board Certified teachers in America, Rick Wormeli brings innovation, energy, validity and high standards to both his presentations and his instructional practice, which includes 34 years teaching math, science, English, physical education, health and history and coaching teachers and principals. Rick’s work has been reported in numerous media, including ABC’s “Good Morning America,” “Hardball with Chris Matthews,” National Geographic and Good Housekeeping magazines, What Matters Most: Teaching for the 21st Century, and the Washington Post. He is a columnist for AMLE Magazine, and a frequent contributor to ASCD’s Education Leadership magazine. He is the author of many best-selling books. Center for Educational Leadership at EASTCONN Theory of Action Cohorts This is a professional learning network that will focus on theory of action, cycle of inquiry, and problem of practice in the areas listed below. Educational leaders will work collaboratively over the course of five sessions throughout the school year to generate transformation plans that are grounded in a clear analysis of what is working and not working for their students and of how strengths and weaknesses in classroom teaching, school based leadership, and central office practice, structures, and systems contribute to current student performance. Leaders will generate a theory of action that explains the specific changes he/she intends to make and why he/she believes these are the ones that will strengthen teaching and learning throughout the system. Leaders will read and reflect upon case studies and research around the topic highlighted to think about how he/she will engage, learn from, and communicate with staff throughout the system, in a spirit of teaching and learning, about why and how the system needs to change.

n Center for Educational Leadership Evaluator Calibration: A Three-Part Series The purpose of calibration is to ensure that a group of educators evaluates teacher practice through observation and artifact analysis consistently and in alignment with the CCT Rubric for Effective Teaching rubric. This increases the reliability of the evaluation data. When scoring is calibrated, evidence and artifacts receives the same score regardless of who scores it because all scorers interpret and apply the rubric in the same way. Calibration is necessary because rubrics alone do not ensure consistent scoring of educator practice. Through the calibration process, educators agree on how the rubric applies to educator practice. Not only does this bring about greater accuracy and reliability in scoring, it also helps to deepen educators’ understanding of expectations for educator practice. These sessions are for district evaluators that are using the CCT Rubric for Effective Teaching for both educators and student/educator support specialists. Each two-hour session will focus on observational calibration and artifact calibration. Videos and artifacts from various educational settings and roles will be utilized. All documents provided can be distributed in your district for ongoing calibration purposes. Teams of evaluators are encouraged to attend together. Communities of Practice We will create a professional learning community that engages administrators for learning within a supportive, self-created community. Administrators will interact, test ideas, challenge their inferences and interpretations, and process new information with each other. As new ideas are analyzed, multiple sources of knowledge and expertise will expand and test the new concepts as part of the learning experience. Examination of the five dimensions of professional learning communities will structure our examinations of current problems of practice.

n Knowing Grammar: The Impetus for Improving Writing

Does your school have a program that is -- or needs to be -integrated with the Connecticut Core Standards for English Language Arts into planning, instruction, and assessment?

This workshop will review the basic elements of grammar and syntax which the CCSS expects that teachers know and suggests ways to teach grammar as part of the reading process and writing process.

Meet with teachers from across the region to receive professional learning, collaborate and plan for instruction and assessment to address the expectations of the CT Core Standards and Smarter Balanced Assessments using common programs such as Reading Street, Journeys, Treasures, Lucy Calkin’s Reading and Writing Workshop, and more.
