Instructional Coaching Professional Learning Community

Learning Forward: THE PRINCIPAL STORY

In order to build support for your teachers within their new evaluation system, EASTCONN is offering an Instructional Coaching Cohort to work with experienced, highly accomplished, and well-respected educators. Coaches must have credibility with teachers and administrators and the skills needed to work one-on-one with teachers as well as to oversee a wider professional learning effort in the school. Coaching is confidential, non-evaluative, and supportive. Coaches work one-on-one and in small groups with teachers on specific teaching strategies or problems, focusing on practical changes they can make in their classrooms. Instructional coaches provide the “Support” piece of the State of Connecticut new teacher evaluation model and allows for job-embedded professional learning to take place within your own building.

THE PRINCIPAL STORY, a one-hour PBS documentary, portrays the challenges principals face in turning around low-performing public schools and raising student achievement. This intimate, one-year journey is seen through the eyes of two dynamic principals: Dr. Tresa D. Dunbar, in only her second year in the Chicago Public School System; and Kerry Purcell, a seven-year veteran in Springfield, Ill. This three-part lunch series will highlight four themes critical to effective school leadership as displayed in THE PRINCIPAL STORY: 1. Stewardship of a vision; 2. Leading instructional improvement; 3. Creating the instructional environment; and 4. Holding people accountable.

INCLUDES: • 5 meetings throughout the year • Online PLC for the entire year through Schoology • 5 hrs. of on-site coaching per participant from Sept.-May

THE PRINCIPAL STORY Field Guide: A Companion to the PBS Documentary for Promoting Leadership for Learning from Learning Forward will be our guide as administrators experience interactive viewing sessions of the full film and film clips to guide discourse around the four themes.

Aspirant Leaders

Evaluation Methodologies: Leader to Leader Series

Aspirant leaders must be ready and able to assume the role of instructional champion—working on many fronts to improve and sustain student achievement. At the same time, they need to manage the academic development of a changing school population and accelerate the development of teachers. These initiatives require school leaders to focus on the management of resources as well as the ongoing renewal of school culture.

How do teaching and learning improve? It’s as simple as…I cannot improve my craft in isolation from others. To improve, I must have formats, structures, and plans for reflecting on, changing, and assessing my practice and student outcomes. This three-part lunch series will focus on: • Looking at classroom teaching and learning through formal and informal processes • Formats for focusing observations • Determining outcomes for observations • Integrating rubric in order to assess growth of teacher practice and student outcomes over time

Aspirant Leaders will prepare you for the many leadership challenges of American schools today. You will examine these challenges from the ground up, and clarify your vision of an effective school and your role in leading it. Working closely with seasoned practitioners, you will define your core values and understand how they can help you promote educational excellence.

The Relationship Between Close Reading and Text-Dependent Questions: Can You Have One Without the Other?

Rigor…It’s all the rage, but what does it mean? Connecting the DOK (Depth of Knowledge) to the expectations of the CT Core Standards and Smarter Balanced Assessment across content areas (Grades 3-8)

This session will take a look at close reading and its relationship to text-dependent questions and provide several approaches by which teachers can begin to include close reading in their classroom lessons. The skill of close reading is developed by having students analyze specific passages from literature or informational text in fine detail, as if with a magnifying class, ensuring the interpretation of a passage is based first and foremost on the words in the passage, and the nuance that words can create. Doing so, students develop a deep understanding and interpretation of these texts and gain a far more thoughtful and thorough understanding of more complex text as well as insight into the author’s craft. It is critical that the teacher selects text-dependent questions that will compel readers to examine and analyze the text to uncover rich meaning. Participants will need to bring three texts that they currently use or want to use in their classrooms, as well as an idea for a specific lesson that they want to create using a close reading excerpt.

The CT Core Standards expect students to demonstrate deep conceptual understanding through the application of content knowledge. Students must then transfer these understandings and skills in new contexts. The Smarter Balanced Assessment items have been developed using Norman Webb’s Depth of Knowledge levels. Karen Hess’ Cognitive Rigor Matrices marries Bloom’s Taxonomy and Webb’s Depth of Knowledge Levels to produce a means of analyzing and increasing the rigor of all tasks. The Cognitive Rigor Matrices are a tool that can be used to develop the rich, engaging learning tasks that are essential to develop students who are college and career ready. Through this professional learning experience, educators will learn how to use this tool to boost rigor and enhance assessment planning and instructional practices in the classroom.

“To build the foundation for college and career readiness, students must have ample opportunities to take part in a variety of rich, structured conversations-as part of a whole class, in small groups, and with a partner.” (CCS Anchor Standards for Speaking and Listening) How can we provide ample opportunities for these rich conversations? Authors Zweirs and Crawford approach conversations as “exchanges between people who are trying to learn from one another and build meanings they did not have before.” Join your colleagues to experience strategies that build the core skills students need to communicate well in a variety of situations and to examine how these skills can be applied to deepen understanding of content beyond what tests require. Investigate academic conversation skills that are the foundation of “classroom conversations.”
