1979 ... A YEAR TO BE REMEMBERED BY COLONEL FOOTBALL FANS

Head coach Roy Kidd and his Eastern Colonels reached another milestone in their rich, illustrious football history last December by winning the NCAA's Division I-AA national championship.

Eastern used a crushing ground game to destroy the Lehigh Engineers, 30-7, in Orlando , Fla.'s, Tangerine Bowl before 5,200 fans.

"We were going to establish our ground game and throw the ball more if we needed," said Kidd. "But we were so successful running the ball, we just kept it on the ground."

Eastern ran up 288 yards rushing, including 121 yards by fullback Dale Patton and 8 I yards by tailback Alvin Miller. For his efforts vs. Lehigh, Miller was voted the EKU Player of the Game by ABC-TV and Chevrolet.

"We made some big third and fourth down conversions and that was a big part of our being able to consume so much of the clock," said Kidd. In fact, the Colonels were able to convert 13 of 16 third down situations.

Defensively, Eastern was able to put extreme pressure on LU standout quarterback Rich Andres and, because of that, the Engineers' offense sputtered. Lehigh was only able to complete 6-23 passes for 102 yards and gain only 91 yards on the ground.

"All we heard all that week was how good Lehigh's defense was. Well, our defense wanted to go out and show the people what a fine defense we had. I think the final stats showed who proved their point," Kidd said.

Roverback George Floyd, noseguard Joe Richard, end Tim Frommeyer and tackle James Shelton were just some of the Colonels who turned in stellar performances.

Eastern had advanced to the finals by defeating Nevada-Reno 33-30 in double-overtime the week before, while Lehigh had beaten Murray State 289.

"We knew if they had beaten Murray by that score at Murray, then they had a good football team. I believe our seniors ( 17 of them) wanted to go out on top and were not going to be denied. We played with intensity and won the war in the trenches. It was definitely one of our best games of the season," Kidd said.

Eastern held its award banquet for the national champions in January with several special guests and an outstanding 20-minute film highlighting the 1979 championship season of the Colonels.

At the event attended by more than 400 people, several proclamations by state and local officials were read and presented to head coach Roy Kidd. Included among these was a proclamation by Governor John Y. Brown, Jr. which cited the feats of the Colonel coaches and players and proclaimed the week of Jan. 20-26, 1980as:EKUNATIONALFOOTBALLCHAMPIONS WEEK in Kentucky. This message was conveyed to the audience by EKU president, Dr. J.C. Powell, in the absence of Governor Brown.

2

Also on hand to read proclamations were state senator Robert R. Martin, state representative Harry Moberly, Jr. and chairman of the EKU Board of Regents, Charles Combs.

Kidd, in turn, presented three national awards to the University. These included the NCAA's national trophy for the Division I-AA national championship: the John F. Kennedy Cup, presented to Kidd in New Orleans by the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame, Inc.; and the Timmie Award, presented to Kidd by the Touchdown Club of Washington, D.C. These were accepted by Dr. Powell.

Jim Delany, Commissioner of the OVC, brought his congratulations from the fellow conference members and also handed out All-OVC certificates to the first and second-team members of that team. Eastern Director of Athletics Donald G. Combs recognized Parrish and junior tailback Alvin Miller for their selection as the NCAA/ Chevrolet scholarship award winners for the three games televised by ABC. Parrish was chosen for the Murray State game, while Miller was picked for both playoff games vs. Nevada-Reno and Lehigh.

Eastern's assistant coaches concluded the program by recognizing members of their respective units which made the EKU Winners Club, which denotes carrying out of at least 70 per cent of their assignments in each game.

NEW NCAA GUIDELINES For Effective Sideline Control

The NCAA Football Rules Committee has adopted new guidelines for more efficient and safer sideline control during collegiate football contests.

RU LE I, Section 2 , Article 3 states: Limit lines shall be marked with 12-inch lines and at 24-inch intervals 12 feet outside the sidelines and the end lines, except in stadiums where total field surface does not permit. In these stadiums, the limit lines shall not be less than six feet from the sidelines and end lines. Limit lines shall be four inches in width. NO PERSON OUTSIDE THE TEAM AREA SHALL BE WITHIN THE LIMIT LINES.

Photographers must observe the following two rules:

(1) Each photographer shall wear a visible credential issued by the sports information director.

(2) Photographers working on the field may work on any part of the sideline outside the bench area and behind the end zone, OUTSIDE THE RESTRAINING AREA LIMIT LINES. No one is permitted in the bench area on the playing field, or in the restraining area next to the sideline, ANY TIME after the competition begins, including during timeouts unless he has been issued a bench pass. Photographers only may work unrestricted on the playing field and in the bench area immediately after the end of the game.

Should any questions arise or you incur any problems, please seek assistance from any EKU Security Personnel or Mr. Larry Bailey, University Photographer. Failure to comply with the new NCAA rules could result in your being asked to leave the field area.

EASTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY

Growth - in quantity and quality - has been the theme at Eastern Kentucky University. The quantity speaks for itself. With an enrollment of nearly 14,000 students , the University's student body has more than tripled since 1960. As a result, new dormitories and large, well-equipped academic structures have been built.

Dr. J.C. Powell will be completing his fifth year as president of the University in October. Powe ll, the school's seventh president , succeeded Dr. Robert R. Martin who served EKU in that position for 16¼ years.

At a 1978 Board of Regents meeting, Eastern was reorganized into nine colleges and a graduate school. Five colleges - Applied Arts and Technology, Business , Education, Law Enforcement and Allied Health and Nursing - remain intact.

Four new colleges were created, including Natural and Mathematical Sciences, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Arts and Humanities and Health, Physical Education , Recreation and Athletics.

The masters degree is offered in several fields as is the specialist degree. A joint doctoral program in education is sponsored in cooperation with the Unive rsity of Kentucky.

The physical plant has undergone building and renovation programs totaling more than $136 million since 1960. During this period every existing major campus facility has been remodeled or complety reconstructed.

ATHLETICS AT EASTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY

The College of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics, sponsors seven intercollegiate sports for men, six intercollegiate sports for women and two coeducational intercollegiate sports. Extensive intramural programs are sponsored providing varied participation opportunities for all. These programs are an integral part of the total program and development of Eastern students. They offer experiences which contribute immeasurably to the health, vitality and preparation of young people as citizens and for their leadership contributions to the youth in the nation's schools and elsewhere.

The College of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics offers a variety of degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The coaches of athletics are among the fifty seven full-time faculty members representing more than a score of the finest colleges and universities in the nation, required to produce academic, intramural and varsity athletic programs.

The extensive indoor and outdoor facilities are used interchangeably for instruction and athletics as is the faculty. The College, which is organized under a single administrative unit, includes three academic departments under which there are seventeen undergraduate and graduate degree programs and intercollegiate athletics. This type organization contributes significantly to successful coordination of the program, faculty and facilities for maximum contribution to the overall mission of the University.

The College is headed by Dean Russell Bogue. Its three academic departments are: School and Public Health, chaired by Dr. Herman Bush; Recreation and Park Administration, chaired by Dr. James McChesney; Physical Education, chaired by Dr. Lee Gentry. The College's program of intercollegiate athletics is administered by Athletic Director, Mr. Donald G. Combs, and Assistant Athletic Director, Dr. Martha Mullins. Its newly created Department of Services is administered by Dr. Fred Darling. Through its departments, the College offers six baccalaureate degree programs and four two-year associate of arts curricula for undergraduate students. At the graduate level seven graduate degree programs within the Masters of Arts in Education, the Master of Science, and the Specialist in Education degrees are offered. Rank II and Rank I teacher certifiction programs and other certification and endorsement programs are offered. The College also serves EKU's general education program through required physical education and health classes for freshmen and sophomores. Enrolled in the College's academic programs are some 1,300 majors, including more than 500 graduate students. To serve this large enrollment, the College boasts a full-time faculty of 57, including 25 members with the earned doctorate. Thirty-five graduate assistants perform teaching and other services.

A balanced athletic program, intramural, sports clubs and intercollegiate, is provided by the College. Intramural and sports clubs

7

programs are sponsored through the physical education department by intramural directors. Competition in numerous sports, including softball, flag football, soccer, racquetball, bowling, volleyball, table tennis, track, basketball and field hockey provide physical outlets for EKU students .

EKU, a member of the NCAA and Ohio Valley Conference, fields athletic teams in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, swimming, golf, tennis, track (indoor and outdoor) rifle, and gymnastics. Basketball, field hockey, gymnastics, tennis, track and field and volleyball make up the intercollegiate program for women, under the AIA Wand KWIC.

Outstanding facilities are required to support an operation with the scope of Eastern's College of HPERA. The College's programs are housed in five major campus structures - The Robert B. Begley Building, where it is headquartered, the Alumni Coliseum, the Weaver Health Building, the Presnell Building and the Greg Adams Building. Numerous tennis courts, recreation areas, Gertrude Hood Field, Turkey Hughes Baseball Field, and the Tom C. Samuels grass-tex surfaced nine-lane track with tartan infield are among the other facilities of the College. An 18-hole golf course and an outdoor education-recreation demonstration area are located at Arlington. There are four equipped training rooms attached to the intercollegiate locker rooms in four Buildings. The Department of School and Public Health has an environmental health laboratory in the Rowlett Building.

The seven-story Begley Building is designed to serve nearly 2,000 students hourly in classes and also provides seating for more than 20,000 football spectators . Included in the structure are three gymnasiums, 12 handball courts, 36 classrooms, 60 offices and the dressing facilities for physical education and football. A training area includes two exercise and weight-lifting rooms, a steam room and a large therapy tank. A seminar room and reception area are located on the second level of the building. Offices on this level have been accoustically treated to absorb sound from the open-top athletic area.

The "Thomas E. McDonough Intramural Fields," which boasts IO football fields, two of which are varsity practice fields and another two which are large enough for soccer play, are in use. In season, eight softball fields may be superimposed on the football layouts.

The Glenn Presnell Building houses football locker and shower rooms , a training room, rest rooms and storage, office and lecture areas. An e quipment check-out room and other service facilities a re located to serve the students who participate in the intramural programs.

The Greg Adams indoor tennis facility became available for use in the fall of 1976. It constitutes the fifth building on campus devoted to housing the activities of the College of HPERA.

Roy Kidd directed his EKU Colonel football team to a school-record 11 wins during the 1979 season and the NCAA Division I-AA n ational championship. During his 16 years at Eastern, the Colonels have compiled a 111-S0-6 record and have won four OVC champio nships, one NCAA Mideast Region title and one national championship.

10

Football

His ability to comm unicate with his players stems from a realistic, matter-of-fact attitude. He's genuinely concerned about each individual as a player and as a student.

He h as a brilliant football mind and is a man who takes advantage of most sit uations and is not afraid to gamble. He is an organizer who has s u rrou nded himself with a very capable coaching staff.

ROY KIDD Head Coach

Eastern head coach Roy Kidd begins his 17th season at the helm of the Eastern Colonels this year a nd will be attempting t o brea k another coaching milestone in 1980.

Kidd, who has com piled a 111 -50-6 record at EKU, ranks second in career coaching wins in Ohio Valley Conference histor y . Charles "Bubber" Murphy, former football coach at Middle Tennessee from 1952-68, won I 17 games during that period to rank first in career wins.

Coaching milestones have become somewhat of a way of life for Kid d during the past couple of seasons. Two years ago, Kidd was able to pick up his 100th collegiate coaching victory as he guided the Colonels to an 8-2 record.

Last year, of course, the Colo ne ls won the NCAA Division I-AA national champion ship and set a school record for most wins in a season ( 11 -2 record). And, this season, he needs only seven victories to break Murphy's all-time OVC coaching record.

During these past 16 years, Eastern has captured a national champio n ship, four OVC championships, had a n unbeaten stri ng of 15 games in the league and won the 1967 NCAA Mideast Regional Championship (covering more than I 00 teams in a 10-s tate a re a) by defeating Ball State 27-13 in the Grantland Rice Bowl. EKU has com piled a reco rd of 111-50-6 during this period

Easte rn ha s also been ranked in the top twenty in the nation by both wire service polls, h av ing gone as high as No. I in 1979.

Kidd's success comes from a comb inatio n of demanding the ultimate in dedication an d determination, yet being a coach who is respected by his players.

All these ingredients po int to the fact that Roy Kidd is a winner. It all start ed for Kidd as a little leaguer in Corbin, Ky., and he continued on the plus side of the ledger as a high school a thlete and then as a football and baseball star at Eastern.

When h e was graduate assistant coach, Eastern went unbeaten and received an invitation to the Tangerine Bowl. Then he started coaching in high school, building tiny Richmond Madis o n int o a state football powerhouse H e had a 54-10-1 record, a 27game winning streak and 14 consecutive unsc ored-upon games. He was Kentucky Coach of the Year in 1961 when the Purples were ranked No I in the sta te all season.

He went to Morehead as an assistant coach in 1962 and helped guide the Eagle s to their second winning season in 13 years and a share of the OVC championship.

Then it was back to Easte rn in 1963 where he served as an assistant for one year before taking over the head job.

The Colonels went 3-5- 1 his first year, o n e of only two losing seasons he has had while coaching. T hey improved that to 5-3-1 the following yea r and Kidd was elected Coach of the Year in the OVC.

Kidd is marri ed to the former Susan Purcell of Richmond. They ha ve three children: Marc, Kathy and Keith.

1980 FOOTBALL PROSPECTUS

The defending NCAA Division I-AA national champion Eastern Kentucky University Colonels football team will return 33 lettermen as they try to defend their crown during the 1980 season.

Eastern, who finished the year with an I 1-2 record and NCAA playoff wins over NevadaReno (33-30) and Lehigh (30- 7), will have the top three rushers co ming back - fullback Dale Patton and tailbacks Alvin Miller and Anthony Braxton.

Patton, a two-time AII-OVC senior fullbac k , rushed for 729 yards and nine touchdowns, while Miller, a senior second-team AII-OVC selection, was the Colonels' top rusher with 777 yards and nine TD's. Braxton, a junior who began the '79 year as the starting tailback before injuries forced him to the sideline, added 290 yards and 2 TD's.

Two other rushers who aided the Colonels during the 1979 season and who will be returning for the '80 campaign are sophomore fullback Nicky Yeast (54 carries, 222 yards, t~o TD's) and senior tailback Bruce Cox (27-116 and one TD).

The Colonels' offense will be aided by what head coac h Roy Kidd calls "the best group of receivers we've ever had a t one time here a t Eastem.H Junior second-team AII-OVC flanker Jerry Parrish heads the group wit h his impressive '79 statistics of 25 receptions for 549 yards and four touchdowns. Other members of this group include senior split-end David Booze ( 17 catches, 291 y ards , three TD's); junior tight end Cris Curtis (9-123-2 T d's); sophomore split-end Steve Bird; junior flanker Ranard McPhaul; and sophomore tight end Tron Armstrong.

Parrish was a definite "triple-threat" for the Colonels in 1979. He led Division I-AA in kickoff returns with his 28. 7 yard average on 14 returns for 402 ya rd s. And, Parrish also rushed the ball on flanker reverses 11 times for 111 yards and three TD's.

Junio r All-OVC guard Kevin Greve leads an offensive line which ope ned the holes las t year for 2,827 yards on the ground and 33 rushing TD's Other le ttermen returning on the line include senior guard Danny Hope;junior offensive tackle Davi d Dihrkop; senior tackles Mike Sheehan and Darryl Lawson; sophomore guard Chris Taylor; senior center Joe Schipske; and sophomore center Steve Coleman.

Senior AII-OVC place kicke r David Flores (9 FG's, 39 EP) will add punch to an offen se that averaged 26.5 points per game last year.

The one big question mark on offense and , perhaps, the key to the fortunes o f the 1980 Colonels lies with who will take over the qua r te r back slot. Junior Chris Isaac is the heir a ppa rent to the job, as he threw for three touchdowns and rushed for three more. Isaac's passing stats for the '79 season includ ed hitting 21-54 passes for 356 yards and four interceptions

Defensively, EKU returns jus t four starters from a uni t that allowed less than two touchdowns per game Senior tackles James Shelton (28 ta ck les, 39 assists), M a rk Siemon (1225) and Buddy Moor (39-25) will anchor the line along with senior end Tim Nix and sophomore ends Randy Taylor and Richard Bell.

The top four linebackers for the Colonels graduated leavinl! the two starting slots up for grabs between sophomores Alex Dominguez and Mik e Wagers, fres hman red -s hirt Paul Kraft o n , plus incoming freshmen.

Junior second-team All-OVC roverback George Floyd heads a talented number ofreturnees in EK U's defensive backfield. Floyd is the top returning tackler on the team with 68 tackles and 50 assists, led the OVC in interceptions with seven and paced the team in fumble recoveries with four. Other lettermen returning in the secondary include senior Charles Brunson, juniors Rodney Byrd and Tom White and sophomore Gus Parks.

Kidd , who begins his 17th year at the helm of the Colonels as the seco nd winningest active coach in Division I-AA (111-50-6), has again lin ed up an impressive schedul e for the 1980 year. The I I-game card includes the usual six-OVC teams, new OVC members Akron and Youngstown, and Division I- A opponents East Tennessee and East Carolina, plus K e ntu cky State. 16

PROSPECTUS

Facing possibly the toughest schedule in its history, the Kentucky State Thorobreds look to 1980 as the year of the challenge. Some old faces will be gone, but several veterans return to work with the freshmen.

Gone from the starters of 1979 will be All-American defensive linemen Marlon Carson and Michael Johnson, now with Dallas in the NFL, and Frankie Taylor.

Leading the group of returning veterans will be honorable mention AllAmerican defensive back Rod Hill. Hill led the nation in punt returns last season, returning 25 punts for 544 yards and two TD's. Hill also had five interceptions, one for a score, and also led the squad in kickoff returns, returning six for 113 yards.

"A good deal of our success this season will depend on our work as a team," predicts coach LeRoy Smith. "Standout performances can be expected when men of this caliber go on the field, but teamwork is the key we'll be looking for in 1980."

PROSPECTUS

Part of Akron head coach Jim Dennison's early-season preparation will include finding replacements for a pair of graduated backfield standouts. Quarterback Bob Maxwell and tailback Paul Winters are the most noticeable void s to be filled on offense.

Junior Dennis Brumfield , Akron's leading sco rer in '79; Ton y Frye, who played as a fullback with the junior varsity last seas on; all-purpose back John Uber and part-time starter Rick Massaro, will all battle for the vacated tailback position.

Returning fullback Tim Staycer balances the Zip backfield and allows the Akron coaching staff the luxury of interchangeably utilizing an option-oriented attack.

The Akron defense should be improved-if for no other rea so n than adjustments to a new sys tem will be easier with an o ther year's experience behind the Zip defenders.

The series is tied 2-2-0.

PROSPECTUS

Coming off the finest season ever in YSU football history (the Penguins were 11-2 last season and played Delaware for the NCAA Division II national championship), head coach Bill Narduzzi is the first to admit that in order to duplicate last year's performance, the voids caused by graduation must be filled as soon as possible.

Last year's Youngstown State team was runner-up in Division II, captured its second straight Mid-Continent Conference championship and in the process, kept its slate unblemished in MCC play.

In this the last season of MCC competition for the Penguins (next year YSU becomes full-fledged members of the Ohio Valley Conference), the goal they have set for themselves is to remain undefeated in conference play and receive another post-season playoff bid.

The biggest concern though of Narduzzi and his staff is that of the quarterback slot where graduation stripped him of four-year regular Keith Snoddy and backup Bill Fink.

Eastern leads the series, 5-3.

PROSPECTUS

Austin Peay State University has neve r enjoyed four straight winning seasons in football. However that could all change in 1980.

After 8-3, 6-4 and 7-4 records the last three years and with 38 lettermen returning, the Governors could h a ve an excellent chance for No. 4 and even bigger things.

Optimism stems mainly from one of the best group of seniors in their school's history.

Heading this list of fourth-year stars will be second team Little AllAmerican defensive tackle Richard Wozniak (6-5, 230), who led the Ohio Valley Conference in qua r terback sacks last year and the team in tackles.

Steve Puthoff (6-2 , 180) will be another all-star candidate. He missed the final se ven games due to a shoulder separation last year but still managed 19 catches fo r 352 yards.

Eastern leads the series, 18-3.

PROSPECTUS

The 1979 season was not a good one for MTSU. The Blue Raiders won but one game, their last of the season, while dropping nine. They finished the season at 1-5 in the OVC.

While these facts of reality are not pleasant for the Middle Tennessee coaching staff, there are some bright spots hidden in there.

The Blue Raiders played a good deal of the '79 campaign with nine or ten freshmen starting under first-year head coach Boots Donnelly. Those freshmen gained a lot of experience in their first y ear of collegiate football.

Donnelly feels his two biggest obstacles in I 980 will be the age of his players, a majority are only sophomores, and the schedule. MTSU will face the regular OVC slate, as well as non-conference foes North Alabama, Western Carolina and UT-Chattanooga. Eastern leads the series, 14-13-0.

PROSPECTUS

The ETSU Buccaneers , coming off their first winning season in nine years, should begin the new decade with a stron g running game, better th an average receivers and a tough defensive interior line while the quarterbacking situation is pretty much unknown.

T he Bucs, who posted a 7-4 overall record in th eir fir st full seaso n as members of the Southern Conference, return all running backs and most wide receivers as well as the defensive line but the secondary and line backing corps could cause some problems as well as the quarterback spot.

Running backs Earl Ferrell, Johnn y McFa ll and Rick Reeves give ETS U three of the better offensive performers in the Southern Conference. McFall scored 84 points via 14 touchdowns and was I Ith in the nation in scoring.

Jeff Davis, a 6-0, 186-pound senior, is the hei r apparent at quarterback but he has limited major college experience.

PROSPECTUS

Coach Jimmy Feix and the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers are looking to turn things around during the 1980 season, after struggling through a disappointing 5-5-0 campaign a year ago.

There are several reasons for an optimistic outlook , including the return of OVC Offensive Player of the Year John Hall A two-time All-OVC quarterback, Hall completed 108 of 215 passes for 1,418 yards and 10 touchdowns in his junior season last yea r.

Junior Elmer Caldwell, senior Nate Jones and senior Craig Freeman will handle the tailback spots, while junior Troy Snardon is the probable starter at fullback.

The defensive unit should again be strong, with returning standouts Brad Todd, Barry Bumm and junior defensive ends Tim Ford ( 73 tackles, AIJOVC) and Donnie Evans.

Western leads the series, 31-21-2.

With 20 starters returning from last season's OVC championship team , Murray State coach Mike Gottfried is holding more aces than a riverboat gambler.

The Racers rolled up a fine 9-1-1 record last year in winning the league crown for the first time since 1951. Gottfried's club also earned a berth in the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs against Lehigh University.

"We've got a good team," said Gottfried. "We play a lot of people, so depth becomes a big thing for us."

Returning will be All-American safety Terry Love for his senior year. After transferring from the Co llege of the Canyons Junior College in California, Love won OVC Defensive Player of the Year honors for his efforts last season. Glenn Jones, a tiny defensive end who was also chosen All-OVC, will be back. He had 11 tackles for losses.

PROSPECTUS

Experience on defense and at the offensive skill positions have TTU's football coaching staff confident that the 1980 season will hold better things for the Tech squad.

Tech's defensive prospects are bright with experienced defenders returning at nearly every position. The Golden Eagles will switch to a fiveman front this season with the hopes of "blending the good from Tech's traditional four-man front of the past with the best of the five-man front," according to Tech head coach Don Wade

Offensively, Tech's runningback and receiving corps feature excellent returning talent. Ronald Bond and Sam Smith started much of last season, while Reggie Bazel and Ed Hollis saw limited action. Alan Kron, Jack Kelley and Paul Selesky saw action last season at the receiver positions.

Transfer James Aaron and 1979 squad members Chip Dickens and Bubba Griffin head the list of quarterbacks.

Eastern leads the series, 22-14-1.

THE CHAMPIONSHIP TRAIL

1 EKU 17 KENT STATE 14

Coach Roy Kidd's Eastern Colonels served notice to their 1980 season oppone n ts by winning their open ing game on t h e road against a Div isio n I-A opponent - a 17-14 win over the Kent State University Go ld en F lash es.

This contest was the first of many dur in g the '79 year w h ich were saved by the EKU defense. On th is particular occasio n , afte r Kent State had pus hed insi de Eastern's 10-ya rd lin e in t h e las t couple of minu tes of play, th e Flash es were held and surrendered the ball on d owns to the Co lonels, giv in g E KU its fi rst of 11 w ins

2 EKU 15 TROY STATE 0

A bit of revenge was in the Co lo n e ls' eye when T roy State, one of just two teams t o beat Eastern in 1978 came to Ha nger Field. Again, it was the defe ns e shining as it posted its f irst shutout of t h e season as it never allowed the Alabama visitors inside the Co lonels' 20.

3 EKU 20 EAST TENNESSEE 27

East Tennessee OB Mark Hu tsell, o n e of the nat ion's leade rs in tota l offense in 1978, proved too m uch for the Colonel defende rs as he connected for 16-23 passes for 204 yards and o n e T D as Eastern dropped its firs t game of of t h e seaso n Trailing by 10 points in the last quarte r, EKU had t h e tables turned as their off ense was un ab le to pu sh th e ba ll across fr om the two-yard line in four tries against the Division I-A Bucs.

4 EKU 35 AUSTIN PEAY 10

The Colonels came home for the OVC o p ener and rea ll y clicked fo r t h e fi rst time on offe nse, piling up 503 t ota l yards a nd 25 first downs in their victo r y over the Governors. Bill Hu gh es a lm ost matched h is season's t otal, hit· tin g 14-2 1 passes fo r 226 yards and th ree TD 's against APSU .

45

5 EKU 52 MIDDLE TENN. 10

Alvin Miller started his first game of the season at tailback and fullback Nicky Yeast subbed for the injured Dale Patton as the Colonels rolled to their second conference win of the season. Miller picked up 56 yards and two TD's, while Yeast was voted ave Rookie of the Week honors for his 103 yards in 19 carries effo rt and one touchdown.

6 EKU 33 CAL-FULLERTON 7

Eastern stepped out of the ave and came away with its fifth win of the season as the Colonels' offense continued to roll. EKU scored twice on long drives, twice on passes and once on a 54-yard punt return by George Floyd in routing their California visitors, the Colonels' third I-A foe of the year

7 EKU 8 WESTERN KY. 6

In a game witnessed by a record-breaking 25 ,3 00 fans at Hanger Field, it was the Eastern defense turn to excel. All-ave cornerback Danny Martin was the hero this time, breaking through to block a potential game-winning Weste rn field goal in the last 30 seconds of play. Eastern scored in the first quarte r on a run by Bill Hughes and a two-point conversion from Hughes-Cris Curtis

8 EKU 7 MURRAY ST. 24

Eastern went to Murray State with a No. 1 ranking in the NCAA's Division I-AA poll but came back home with its first league loss of the year. Seventeen points by MSU in a fiveminute span in the second quarter of the regionally televised contest put the game away for the Racers, who eventually won the ave crown and advanced to the I-AA playoffs.

46

9. EKU 35 TENNESSEE TECH 0

Eastern rebounded impressively from the loss at Murray State and came up with its second shutout of the season versus TTU. A powerful ground game which netted 306 yards and two touchdowns by flanker Jerry Parrish catapulted EKU to its fourth OVC win of the year.

EKU 27 JACKSON STATE 21

Jackson State entered the game as the No. 2 team in the country, while Kidd's Colonels were ranked No. 5. EKU held the highlyregarded Jackson State tailback Perry Harrington to just 79 yards in 19 carries and moved the ball at will versus the Tigers in what Kidd called "one of the greatest victories we've had since I've been at Eastern." 11

EKU 34 MOREHEAD 7

After the win over Jackson State, EKU moved back into the playoff picture and responded like a championship team the next weekend by defeating a good Morehead State team for a school record ninth win of the year. EKU amassed 412 yards total offense as Bill Hughes passed for 154 yards and rushed for another 50 as the Colonels finished 5-1 in the Ohio Valley Conference.

The No. 1 ranking helped the Colonels set new OVC and school attendance records, at home and on the road. Eastern also shared the billing of three telecasts by the ABC television network.

In 1941, foresighted men had visions of an Ohio Valley Conference. Sportswriters speculated about the impending division of the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Virtually all agreed it was just a matter of time until the di vision took place and a new athletic conference was formed.

Then the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and America was plunged into World War II.

Seven years later, after the hostilities had ceased, a pre-wa r dream became a post-war reality. The "Big Five" of the K.I.A.C. withdrew to form the Ohio Valley Conference.

Making the move were West ern Kentucky State College, Eastern Kentucky State College, Murray State College, Morehead State College and the Un iversity of Louisville. The y were joined by Evansville College and, shortly thereafter, by Tennessee T ec h and Marshall Coll ege

Purpose of the O.V.C ., whi ch was set forth in its constitution, is "to regulate, control and promote all the recognized b ranches of intercollegiate athletics in in st itutions represented."

Through a gradual process, the Ohio Valley Conference was to become a league of Kentucky and Tennessee state colleges. Middle Tennessee State College joined the rolls in 1952, East Tennessee State University in 1957 and Austin Peay State College in the spring of 1962. They replaced Louisville, which became in independent in 1949, and Marshall a nd Evansville, which departed in 1952.

The University of Akron and Youngstown State University have joined the OVC during the past two years.

Eastern's women's teams are members of t h e 19-school Kentucky W omen's Intercollegia t e Conference. K WIC is the offic ial athletic conference for all recognized women's collegiate programs in Kentu cky.

KWIC conducts s tate tournaments for college women in basketball , field hockey, gymnastics, tennis, track and field and volleyball and is the recognized affiliate of the national organization, the Association of Intercolleg iate Athletics for Women (A IAW).

Eastern also competes against o ther OVC schools in a regular season schedule in basketball and a post-season tournament in tennis.

Eas t ern ranks first in the Conference's alltime football standings with a 124-80-7 wonlost record. The Colonels ha ve won five

regular season t it les outright ('54, '67, '68 , '74 and '76) and shared one title in 1962

Eastern won the NCAA Division I-AA national championship in 1979 and the NCAA Mideast Regional Championship in 1967.
