EKU COUNSELING CENTER Welcome to EKU! We here at the Counseling Center are excited to welcome you to our University! While coming to college can be an adventure, it can also come with unexpected challenges. If you find yourself struggling during your time here, please reach out to us. We are here to help you successfully navigate the challenges you encounter during your time at EKU. If you are uncertain if you need therapy support, please call us to discuss your concerns. GETTING STARTED To get started with services, call 859-622-1303 for an Initial Assessment meeting to let us know you’d like to initiate services with us. You’ll be asked to complete some initial documentation to tell us more about yourself and then you’ll meet with one of our staff members the same day, usually within about an hour. Give us a call from 8:00AM-3:00PM, Monday-Friday, during the Fall/Spring semesters or during the Summer, call between 7:30AM3:30PM, Monday-Thursday. Our office is located in Whitlock 571. CRISIS SUPPORT The Eastern Kentucky University Counseling Center (EKUCC) offers after-hours support to an EKU student or any person concerned about an EKU student. This is an extension of EKUCC services and can assist a caller in any mental health crisis. When appropriate, EKUCC staff will follow up with the caller on the university’s next business day. EKUCC After Hours is available weekends, evenings, holidays, and during university closures. To access EKUCC After Hours Urgent Support, please call (859) 622-1303. If you need emergency assistance, please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room. PSYCHIATRY SERVICES The EKUCC offers psychiatry services during the Fall and Spring Semesters. To get started in these services, call our main number and request an Initial Assessment meeting.

While individual therapy is not required for ongoing psychiatry appointments, it is sometimes encouraged. OUTREACH EKUCC also offers a range of outreach services throughout the academic year. These services include several “BIG” events on campus, as well as smaller informational presentations for organizations and classrooms. Sometimes, these events are conducted by our MHPAs (Mental Health Peer Advocates-student volunteers). These students provide valuable support in sharing our resources with the EKU community. For more information or to apply, please check them out here go.eku.edu/mhpa-outreach WORKSHOPS, GROUPS AND DROP-IN GROUPS EKUCC offers a range of group-based services for students. While some groups are “traditional” structured therapy groups that require a meeting with the group leader before joining, we also have several informal drop-in groups that do not require prior meetings to attend. Simply come on the day/time it is offered to join the conversation. Likewise, we also offer weekly workshops. Workshops focus on a range of topics that apply to students, from wellness to academic performance, test anxiety, and burnout. Workshops do not require sign-ups, and any EKU student can attend.

Student Accounts ounts & Acces Access All students at EKU are provided with a username and password when they join the university. Your EKU User Account (sometimes called your e-key [electronic key]) is your online identity at EKU. Your EKU user account permits secure access to your EKU email (myMail), computer lab equipment, printing services, secure campus Wi-Fi, EKU Direct, Office 365, Google apps, library databases, and much more. By accepting your EKU computing accounts, you agree to observe the responsibilities and standards outlined in the Acceptable Use of Information Technology Resources. EKU IT only troubleshoots password and account issues for students. All related issues and troubleshooting needs can be directed to EKU IT at (859) 622-3000.

Passwords

Two-Factor Authentication

You can reset your password with the help of the Self-Service Password Tool. a. Go to the myMail login page (it.eku.edu/mymail). b. Click the Change My Password button. c. On the next screen, choose either button: ‘Reset Your Forgotten Password’ (if you don’t remember your password) or ‘Change Your Password’ (if you remember your password). d. You can click the ‘Set up Your Recovery Verification’ to make changes to your Self-Service information.

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds a second layer of security to protect your account. Users must go through two layers of security before being granted access to an account or system. 2FA increases the safety of online accounts if your password has been compromised.

IT reserves the right to reset a user’s password if a compromise is suspected or reported.

IT Notices IT notices are email alerts sent out by IT informing students, staff, and faculty of Wi-Fi, Blackboard, and EKUDirect outages, as well as alerts to phishing or scams. These notices are also reported on EKU IT’s Twitter @EKUITColonels.

Connecting to Campus Wi-Fi As a student, you can connect to on-campus Wi-Fi through your devices. There are several network options: • eku_secure & eku_secure5G: The recommended, encrypted Wi-Fi network for anyone with an EKU email username and password. Use your EKU credentials to connect on your mobile devices, tablets, and PCs. • eku_guest: This network is a courtesy option for guests on campus. No username or password is required. Access is limited, so not all campus resources work on it. • eku_BYOD: If the device does not support WPA2 Enterprise, you can use this network. You can register up to 5 devices at once. Instructions can be found at it.eku.edu/byod. For additional support, contact the EKU Geeks at (859) 622-GEEK or refer to it.eku.edu/support/ wireless-network.

Blackboard

Software

Blackboard is the learning management system at Eastern Kentucky University provided for all students and instructors as a tool to enhance learning. A Blackboard site is made for every class at EKU with instructors and students automatically enrolled. Instructors decide whether to make these sites available for students to see and use.

Current EKU students may download and use the following software titles while an EKU student:

Your Blackboard Login is the same information you use for your EKU Email account.

• • • • •

Office 365 (Suite of software including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote) Read&Write Gold (Literacy, accessibility, and dyslexia software) Google Workspace for Education Office 365 for Education Cloud Printing drivers

Security It is important to practice smart computing whether you are at home, on vacation, or at school at EKU. For additional security information, refer to it.eku.edu/security. Phishing and spam are the most important security problems to look out for. Criminals use malicious emails and websites to trick you into revealing your password or other sensitive information or infecting your computer with malware. Phishing emails often use urgent language, ask for personal information, and have grammatical, typographical, or other obvious errors. Find additional information on phishing, at it.eku.edu/phishing. You can report suspicious emails you receive at your university email account to spam@eku.edu.

don’t get hooked . . .

EKU POLICE The Eastern Kentucky University Police Department is a four-time accredited law enforcement agency by the Kentucky Association for Chiefs of Police. We provide 24-hour emergency response and patrol services to the University and the surrounding community when requested. The Police Department’s authorized strength is 24 sworn police officers, including a criminal investigations unit, explosion detection k-9 unit, and a full-time school resource officer assigned to Model Laboratory School. All EKU Police Officers attend the 23-week (928 hours) Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Training academy located on EKU’s campus. Additionally, all Officers complete a minimum of 40 hours of state mandated professional development law enforcement training each year. EKU Police Officers have full law enforcement authority throughout all of Madison County. The EKU Police Department has its own 911 Dispatch center, and all tele-communications employees attend the Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Telecommunications academy and are certified upon completion. Telecommunicators must complete state mandated training each year. The EKU Police Department responds to all requests for assistance, including criminal offenses, traffic collisions, and other service-related calls that occur on the Richmond Campus. You can contact the police department directly when in need of assistance by dialing (859) 622-1111. All 911 calls made from a cell phone on campus are routed to the county 911 center before being sent back to the EKU Police Department, while 911 calls originating from a university-based land line are sent directly to EKU Police. The EKUPD recommends members of the university community program our direct number into their phones in case of an emergency on campus to avoid any delay in police services being dispatched to your location. Student Parents Invest in their Future

your time IS NOW!

In the United States nearly 5 million undergraduate students, comprising 26 percent of the total college population, are also parents of dependent children. Educational achievement for students with children benefits the students themselves, and the families they are raising. Research demonstrates that increasing parents’ educational attainment has positive short and long term gains for children, in the form of higher earnings and greater access to resources. Statistics also indicate that single mothers have the highest poverty rate and for each level of educational obtainment the income level increases by 33%. At EKU, we recognize the unique needs and challenges that our student parents face. The EKU Center for Student Parents provides support, guidance and resources to all student parents to help you obtain your academic goals. Start your future today.
