BLADEZ & CO: NEW CUTTING-EDGE DOUBLE BAY BARBER P7

Bayside NEWS EASTERN SUBURBS

EDGECLIFF COMMECIAL FUTURE VISION P4 QWERTY is not an acronym, but WYSIWYG is. It stands for “What You See Is What You Get” and it was all the rage in the last decades of the twentieth century. Before that, what you typed, looked like what you typed, but not like what you printed. Which was annoying. But the problem got fixed and the phrase was coined by Charles Symonyi in 1974, Bill Tunnicliffe in 1978 and Larry Sinclair in 1982. In each case stated with absolute confidence and authority and no mention of the words “thought to have been”. Which proves you can’t always trust what you see in “Black and White”. Many of us must be starting to feel the same about the daily blizzard of facts and statistics we hear about Covid. But here we are with another “stop start” lockdown at the same time that people in Singapore, Florida and Alabama are ceasing to report daily cases and starting to treat Covid as endemic. In his book “Thinking, Fast and Slow” Daniel Kahneman describes the human brain as “A machine for jumping to conclusions” and coins his own acronym WYSIATI. It stands for “What You See Is All There Is” and it’s survival value is that it lets us make quick decisions based incomplete information. That’s very useful for avoiding being eaten by a lion on the hunter gatherer plains of Africa, but a problem when trying to solve complex problems like Covid-19 and global warming. These are better handled by our “slow thinking” brain which developed much, much later than the “quick thinking” one. The problem is that the brain’s default setting is to trust quick thinking first and only later use

slow thinking to accurately assess the situation. A few recent decades of gradually increasing temperatures prove we have the existential crisis of global warming and a few cases of highly infectious Covid means we have to have a lockdown. Sadly our first instincts lead us to create future problems that are much greater than the ones we were trying to solve. Like braking too fast and crashing into a lamp post when more gradual braking would have been adequate. Fortunately, slow thinking eventually starts to work, gather new information and plot a new course. Suddenly a slew of books appear contesting global warming, and Singapore, Florida and Alabama reach the conclusion that we must take a new direction, and every day more and more people are saying “This can’t go on, we’ve got to learn to live with Covid”.

EDGECLIFF COMMERCIAL CENTRE FUTURE VISION The Edgecliff Commercial Centre (ECC) is a key local hub for our community and a gateway to our local area from the CBD and the broader eastern suburbs.

KEY RECOMMENDATIONS

Since 2010, Edgecliff has been the subject of numerous planning proposal requests for increases to the maximum height and floor space ratios of future developments.

Land use: Support the Edgecliff Commercial Centre’s community and business role through minimum non-residential floor space, and focus commercial uses close to the train station.

The Draft Edgecliff Commercial Centre Planning and Urban Design Strategy sets a vision for the centre and makes recommendations on key built form outcomes including land uses, heritage conservation, maximum building heights, active street frontages, affordable housing, design excellence, community infrastructure and transport. It envisions a mix of commercial, retail and residential uses and requires all new development to be accompanied by community infrastructure, affordable housing and public domain improvements. The Draft Strategy provides a proactive approach to planning, to prevent ad-hoc development and fragmented, uncoordinated planning. It is accompanied by the Draft ECC Public Domain Plan which identifies potential public domain improvements in the ECC such as new public spaces, urban greening, and pedestrian and cycling infrastructure to guide private and public investment in the future.

Key elements of the Draft Strategy are: Heritage: Conserve and enhance existing heritage and transition the built form sensitively to the adjoining heritage conservation areas.

Density: Provide opportunities for greater building heights and floor space. This will be subject to meeting certain criteria for site amalgamation, design excellence and delivery of community infrastructure. Design excellence: Ensure that new development is of the highest standard of architectural and urban design. Community infrastructure: Require new development to contribute to new and upgraded community infrastructure. Affordable housing: Require affordable housing at a minimum rate of 5% of new residential floor space. Public domain: Enhance the public domain, encourage active transport infrastructure and facilitate urban greening. Traffic and transport: Mitigate traffic impacts through infrastructure upgrades and encouragement of car sharing by reduced car parking requirements.

Did you know you can put food scraps into your green lid bin? If everybody did this, we would slash the amount of waste we send to landfill by half and create nourishing compost instead.

IT’S EASY, HERE’S HOW: • Pop your food scraps into your green lid bin, along with garden organics. You can use a compostable bag or newspaper to wrap your scraps. No plastic bags please. • Put your green lid bin out for collection each week. Any type of food scrap is accepted including fruit and vegetables, meat and bones, dairy, grains – and more. For a full list of what can and can’t go in your green bin visit: woollahra.nsw.gov.au/ kitchentocompost

EASTERN SUBURBS

EASTERN SUBURBS

Since last year’s Budget almost 500,000 jobs have been created, and today there are 75,000 more Australians in work than there were before the COVID-19 pandemic. Our economic recovery is well underway, but there is still a considerable journey ahead.

Ed 31, July, 2021

DAVE SHARMA

FEDERAL MEMBER FOR WENTWORTH

This year’s Budget will help secure Australia’s economic recovery, create more jobs, protect our health, and guarantee essential services. Household incomes are supported with the extension of the low and middle-income tax offset, meaning more people will keep more of what they earn. Around 58,400 taxpayers in Wentworth will benefit from this.

To free up housing stock for younger families, those aged over 60 will be able to contribute up to $300,000 into their superannuation if they downsize their home.

We are investing an additional $1.7 billion to make childcare more affordable and more accessible, and give parents, and especially women, the choice to work extra hours and days. Under these changes, 250,000 families will be better off by an average of $2,200 per year.

We are looking after our senior Australians with $17.7 billion in new funding to improve the safety and quality of aged care and provide new home-care packages. This record investment in aged care will help the 22,267 senior Australians living in Wentworth.

The Budget will help drive innovation through a new ‘patent box’, simplified tax treatment of employee share ownership schemes, and our $1.2 billion Digital Economy Strategy. We are getting younger Australians into home ownership, through investment in expanding affordable housing and making it easier to save a deposit through schemes such as the First Home Super Saver Scheme and the First Home Loan Deposit Scheme. We are also establishing the Family Home Guarantee to assist 10,000 eligible single parents to enter the housing market with a two percent deposit.

We are supporting small and medium businesses to invest and grow, with the extension of the expanded instant asset write-off and loss carry-back provisions. Around 33,500 businesses in Wentworth will benefit from this.

Investing in the health of Australians, $2.3 billion has been committed to expanding the provision of mental health services. More medicines are being listed on the PBS to treat breast cancer, lung cancer, osteoporosis, migraine, eczema, and asthma.

upgrading our recycling capabilities, creating jobs, and reducing waste sent to landfills. We will be investing a further $1.6 billion to fund priority technologies to help reduce emissions.

Our economy has come through the COVID-19 pandemic stronger position than most other countries because of our strong balance sheet and the unprecedented fiscal assistance and support we were able to provide.

Dave Sharma, Federal Member for Wentworth with Treasurer Josh Frydenberg We are scrapping the $450 monthly income threshold for the superannuation guarantee, helping to improve equity in the superannuation system. A further $1.1 billion is being committed to support more emergency accommodation,

legal assistance, counseling, and financial support for those escaping domestic violence to keep women and children safe. This Budget provides over $480 million in new funding for the environment, including $100 million to protect our oceans. We are also

The pathway to fiscal consolidation lies through economic growth, not austerity. Already this year’s Budget deficit is $52 billion lower than was expected just six months ago, with more Australians back at work. For more information on the budget, please feel free to be in touch with my office.

Bladez: New cutting-edge Double Bay barber Good old-fashioned service in a stylish wrapping is how you could describe the Bladez & Co shop. Yet though a top barber service is offered, it aims for more. “We want to offer an experience – not just a service,” says Bladez & Co Business Manager, Nika Rahmani. “We believe in strong relationships with everyone who walks through our doors – making people feel at home and comfortable; a space where our customers feel pampered from the moment they walk in.”

The staff of barbers offer a high level of personal service. They take the time to chat with clients plus offer complimentary coffee or other beverage and thoroughly explain the product range.

Set in fashionable Kiaora Place, Double Bay, Bladez & Co’s sleek shop design draws people in with a confident but also inviting look. Featuring an open feel with chic black and white décor, once inside, customers discover this modern barber not only offers the latest in premium products and techniques but also has traditional specialities – the ‘hot towel shave’ being particularly popular.

With the average haircut only costing $40, it’s no wonder Bladez & Co is attracting a raft of returning customers. The hot towel shave’s traditional taste of luxury only costs $40. Other popular requests are specialty haircuts, including the skin fade – which is only $50.

“We have regulars who just come in for our hot towel shaves; after lathering on facial soap, the barber shaves with a cut-throat razor then applies a hot towel,” she explains. Though open only since December – making it the ‘new kid on the block’, a wealth of experience is offered: “Sam, the owner, has had over 15 years’ hairdressing experience, and I’ve been in the management and hairdressing industry for about eight years. Double Bay was a drawcard for their new business. “I love the area and making everyone feel comfortable when they walk in,” Nika enthuses.

Attracting great feedback is the price point, which offers very good value for money – especially for Double Bay: “We aim to give more than what our price is, and I can tell that our customers are really happy with what they pay and receive,” Nika observes.

Though clients mainly are teens to mid-50s, all ages are welcome. And all haircut styles are catered for – plus re-styles, beard trims, line-ups, colours, keratin, hair treatments and facial masks. Bladez & Co is open seven days and customers can just walk-in, however if anyone is on a time limit, appointments can be made. Paula Towers

The Australian Fashion Show - What a surprise

Usually people have events and then go out to buy an outfit. In this case it was the reverse. I bought the jacket on Thursday night, then wondered where to wear it. Then on Friday night I had an opportunity to attend Australian Fashion Week. I’m not into the latest fashion couture but perhaps my perception is changing. To be honest, had I not bought the jacket, I probably would not have attended the fashion show. So here’s how it happened. A friend of mine needed to buy an outfit for a special occasion, and she had her eyes on something in the Moss & Spy window on Queen St, Woollahra. So my sister and I tagged along. I don’t usually tag along as fashion and fitting rooms are not my thing. Despite that I was encouraged to try some pieces on, and I must say I’m glad I did. My friend bought her outfit as did my sister and, surprisingly, I bought a few pieces too. Why surprisingly? Well, as mentioned, I’m not really into fashion, but now, since meeting Lia Tsimos of Moss & Spy, that may be changing.

ACTIVE AGEING

Active ageing is about staying engaged and feeling worthwhile. It adds years to people's lives and quality to those years.

There we were trying on outfits when suddenly Lia was there to help us in person. She was truly caring, and suddenly, I had this new found confidence that I too, could look chic with Lia’s amazing designs. What’s lovely about Lia’s design at Moss and Spy, Woollahra is that she only makes a few pieces, so you can be pretty sure, if you do need to buy an outfit for an occasion, the person standing next to you, won’t be in the same piece.

Thanks to Lia and her team (Anna and Marie-Anne) we were perfectly dressed for the occasion.

The second time around, visiting Moss & Spy. I bought another jacket, this time, the sheer black jacket (seen in picture). I bought it because it was beautiful. Then, the very next day, I was invited to go with a friend to the Australian Fashion show. In panic mode, I was wondering what to wear, when I thought of my new sheer jacket and its Lia Tsimos look. I called Moss & Spy and they advised how to wear the outfits my friend and I bought.

Now, reading this, you might think I’m advertising for Moss & Spy. But no, Lia Tsimos and her team, have no idea I’m writing this article. But they will now, when you pop in to visit and say, “Hi Bonita sent me.”

Wearing the jacket, did I pull it off? In any event, whilst taking the picture, I thought, I’ll just try to copy Lia’s chic look.

THE BUILDERS OF MODERN AUSTRALIA

The Prep School - Double Bay, is a 15 place long day care centre located in one of Double Bay’s most popular retail streets. The service caters to the needs of all children and families from 2 years to school age and operates between 7.30am -6pm

Bakker’s booklet has recognised the need for reconciliation and that theme was deeply woven into the ceremony also highlighting the valuable role of our defence forces in promoting tolerance and equal opportunity. Peter Bakker can be reached via phbakker5@gmail.com for those who wish to purchase his book.

RK'S YOUT

The story of Jack’s extraordinary life, family and military service are masterfully told by historian Peter Bakker. It is an important story of an individual First Nations man, one rarely told amidst modern Australia’s lack of regard for the original inhabitants of this land, except in sensationalist terms.

U YO

Jack Bond was a Yuin man who spent most of his early life on the south coast, before spending his later years in the eastern suburbs. He was the first known First Nations person to have received a war service medal. He had the distinction of being one of the first of many First Nations men to serve overseas in the military. Jack served with honour in the Boer War on two occasions and was widely recognised and accepted in the wider white community of the Braidwood district in which he lived.

Born in 1872, Jack Bond would have been six years old when TS Mort was buried at Bodalla and quite possibly even attended his funeral. He would have been 28 years old when he left Australia for his first tour of duty in South Africa.

Next month, we will continue our series on the fascinating life of Sir Thomas Mitchell and discover interesting aspects of the relationship with First Nations people from the earliest contact.

MA

JACK ALICK BOND

As we have discussed in earlier articles, life was often brutal and hard in the late 19th Century and racism was widespread. Situations we have previously described, such as the funeral of Thomas Sutcliffe Mort when more than 300 Yuin people attended his funeral were rare, but they were important markers of respect held for others from diverse cultures.

The highly respected elder Pastor Ray Minniecon, at a recent lecture at St Mark’s Church, reminded us that the First Nations people are the community sector with one of the strongest adherence to the Christian faith in Australia today. According to Pastor Ray, “recognition by even one individual in the eastern suburbs of the service to the nation of Australian men like Jack Bond, is an important step in the essential task of reconciliation. There are few problems that can’t be solved by simply loving your neighbour”.

YOUTH S T

The Governor of New South Wales, senior representatives of the Australian Defence Forces and many distinguished guests, were present at the re-dedication of the grave of an extraordinary Australian First Nations man. The moving ceremony recognised Jack Alick Bond’s life with full military honours, in a memorial service including Christian rites and incorporating traditional First Nations elements.

and was comfortable and well received in white society. His latter years were spent in Sydney demonstrating boomerang throwing and making and selling artifacts made from shells. He died tragically in a tram accident at La Perouse in 1941 at 69 years of age.

We are interrupting our series on the life of Sir Thomas Mitchell to recognise a significant event that occurred recently in the Eastern Suburbs, at the La Perouse cemetery.

DYNAMIC EARLY LEARNING

Our team of Early Childhood eduators are warm, friendly and dedicated. They represent a diverse range of cultures and nationalities and are able to speak a number of different languages such as Portuguese, Hebrew, Nepalese, Afrikaans and Italian. We value diversity and respect inclusion, celebrating the history, culture and festivals each and everyone brings to the centre. Each child’s protection, progress and happiness guides everything that we do in a safe and nurturing environment. The daily curriculum reflects each child’s individual experience and uniqueness with consideration of their journey within the group. We celebrate diversity and collaborate with families to nurture the child’s understanding of their place within the wider world. Our aim is to enhance each child’s learning and development by engaging the child as a whole, in meaningful ways within a supportive, stimulating and welcoming environment where they are able to learn, develop and explore. Whilst getting to know the child through interaction and observation we consider each child’s developmental needs and provide many challenging, yet positive strengths based learning experiences that ignite each child’s self belief in themselves and what they are able to achieve.

To promote the happiness of our children, families, visitors and staff we aim within The Prep School to have a friendly homeaway-from-home. We remind each other to view ourselves daily with fresh eyes and make sure our physical environment is inviting and organised so as to spark children’s curiosity and inspire exploration, discovery and play throughout the day. The Prep School offers morning and afternoon tea – which is a platter of different seasonal fruits and some light finger food.

Munch and Move as well as NSW Health, guide our menu planning and healthy eating habits. Our playground has a large free spaced area for children to be able to develop their gross motor skills. This area also features a sandpit, cubby house and a small natural garden. A large deck area allows children to use this space to explore and investigate their ideas. Bev Cohen

Pacific St Robertson Park

1 My walk starts at The Pilot Station. Initially, there was just one pilot and he was required to go aboard an incoming vessel to guide it to safe anchorage. The service grew with shipping, the pilots using whale boats with a crew of 46 men-Portuguese and South Sea Islanders were often employed. In 1862, the competitive system of pilotage was abolished in favour of a Government operation using two schooners - the station was located on the site of the previous Vaucluse Police Station.

2

I pass Dunbar House, which was built in 1837 by Mortimer Lewis, a colonial architect. It was later taken over by Pieter Laurentz Campbell, a colonial treasurer, who called it Zandoliet. The house was named Dunbar House in the 1950's, following a resolution of Woollahra Council. The most famous owner was Henry Billing, who created an exotic zoo there. He had a Bengal tiger called Hercules, leopards, Egyptian sheep, golden pheasants and English ferrets. There is a mystery as to what happened to all those animals. Dunbar House is now a restaurant and function centre.

3

The establishment of Robertson Park was after the death of Sir John Robertson, five times premier of NSW. Sir Robertson and his wife Lady Margaret Emma Robertson lived in Clovelly from 1864 and purchased the property in 1878. Robertson died at Clovelly in 1891 and the house remained in private ownership until it was no longer fit for human habitation. In 1902 it was demolished and the archaeological survey of Robertson Park identified what appeared to be some physical remains of Clovelly House and outbuildings in the northeastern corner of the Park.

3

The Gap

2

Clovelly St

Robertson Park was also used as a lookout base during WWII. Trenches were dug on the western side of the park for protection during an attack. Newspaper cuttings from 1940s reveal that the Council organised a series of 'children's days' to celebrate peace following the end of World War II. It included a fancy dress parade, treasure hunt, and athletic and sailing events. There are many plaques and monuments in this park, so take time to view them. Watsons Bay is also famous for Doyles Restaurant. The Doyle family trace their restaurant’s history back to 1885 when Henry Newton and his wife Hannah opened tea rooms in Watsons Bay.

4

The tea rooms evidently blew down in 1907 and the following year their daughter, Eva, opened the two-storey Ozone Cafe on the same site. During the Great Depression, the business folded, but after WWII Alice Doyle and her husband Jack re-opened the dining room. In 1948, their grand-daughter Alice Doyle revived the business, which became known as Doyles Restaurant, famous for its seafood. Next door was once The Palace Hotel, built in 1886, designed by architect John Kirkpartick in Victorian Italianate 'Boom' style. It was replaced in 1939 by the present Watsons Bay Hotel, a very fine Art Deco structure, designed by architects Scott, Green and Scott. Walking down the esplanade take the steps up to Pacific St. At 14 Pacific St, there is a plaque dedicated to novelist Christina Stead who lived there from 1911 to 1928.

5 In the centre of Watsons Bay is Robertson Park which has associations with the earliest days of the colony. The Aboriginal group who lived around Watsons Bay and South Head is believed to have been the Birrabirragal people. Physical evidence of their occupation remains in the form of shell middens and rock art around the harbour’s edge. Two years after Europeans first arrived at Sydney Cove, a Lookout Post was established in January 1790 at South Head. Although there are no physical remains of the houses and gardens built for the signalmen assigned to the post, it is thought that they were located in the grounds of present day Robertson Park.

If you need any advice or decisions to make please dont hesitate to phone Ruth Marks 0414 273 104.

We end the walk at the carpark at the southern end of Camp Cove. A path takes you to a stone obelisk which stands at Green Point, erected in 1850s, at what was then known as Laings Point, as a navigational marker for early navigation into Port Jackson. Green Point was also the southern end of the cross-harbour boom net extending 1,480 metres to Georges Head, which was built during World War 2. It caught one of the Japanese midget submarines that entered Sydney Harbour in May 1942.

Also at Green Point is the Marine Biological Station, built in 1881 by architect John Kirkpatrick Baron Nicolai de Miklouho-Maclay, a leading scientist and humanitarian who had done pioneering work in New Guinea. The station was resumed by the Army in 1886. He married a daughter of Sir John Robertson, left Australia in 1887 and died back in Russia a year later. There is also a marble monument erected in 1927 by the Royal Australian Historical Society in conjunction with Vaucluse Council to commemorate the beach as the first landing place of Governor Phillip in Port Jackson.

My next walk (Aug Ed 32) takes me down Ocean St, Woollahra passing churches, historic houses & consulates.

WAVERLEY COUNCIL’S ABOUT-TURN ON SYNTHETIC GRASS Acting on community concerns, Waverley Council has ordered a study into whether synthetic turf currently covering a playing field at Waverley Oval could be ending up as microplastics in the ocean. (The answer will definitely be yes, according to three Greens councillors who have raised the issue.) Meanwhile, the council has agreed to a moratorium on artificial turf on new sports fields within the municipality. The policy represents an abrupt turnaround for the council, which has previously been recommending synthetic surfaces because they require less maintenance. There is a powerful community push to get rid of artificial turf in the Waverley LGA. There are groups such as Plastic Free Bronte which have been lobbying about the issue for some time. Not only have they expressed concerns about the synthetic grass on Waverley oval, but they have drawn concern to a recent Waverley Council policy document giving the nod of

approval to plastic turf. The document is a ten year plan for open space management adopted by Council in April this year. Called Open Space and Recreational Strategy 2021– 2031, it includes an assessment of training field surfaces to determine what maintenance and upgrade schedules are required to increase the capacity of play and resilience of turf. “Consider alternative surfaces such as hybrid or synthetics,” says the document, available on the Waverley Council website. Community groups and Greens say this endorsement of synthetic turf technology appears to be an open invitation to use it in favour of that tiresome natural turf that requires watering and weeding. The Greens who have raised the issue – Deputy Mayor Elaine Keenan, Dominic Wy Kanak and George Copeland – say the recommendation leaves it open for synthetic grass to be used “without further consultation.” A motion by the three Greens on synthetic turf policy was adopted in a majority vote. It calls for a moratorium on further installation of synthetic turf by Council pending the results of a report on the environmental implications of artificial turfs

Waverley Park No. 2 Synthetic Field recently ordered by Planning Minister Rob Stokes. This report will look at “sustainable alternatives to synthetic grass,” say the Greens trio, who strongly believe Waverley Council should be heading down that path. Meanwhile, the possible hazards of the artificial turf installed by Council in 2016 on Waverley Oval will be assessed. Information will be gathered about how much of both plastic turf and the crumbed rubber layer underneath needs to be replaced each year. Nearby stormwater runoff will be monitored for leaching of microplastics. In addition, measurements will be made of the heat impacts of the synthetic turf on Waverley Oval during the

hot summer months. That’s another thing about synthetic turf – it heats up to temperatures far higher than you get in the sands of a baking hot desert. The title of a Sydney Morning Herald article in March thus year summed up the situation: Fake grass may be greener, but much hotter and less friendly to environment. Fake grass can melt the soles of shoes, blister children’s hands and send dogs hot-footing it to more friendly surfaces. The Herald article quoted as environmental scientist who measured the temperature of synthetic turf in western Sydney at a sizzling 106 degrees (yes, Celsius!) in January 2020. Tony Maguire

Ocean pools came into fashion as part of the trend towards swimming as a competitive sport. Recreational and competitive swimmers needed a place to do laps, safe from strong waves and the risk of shark attacks. There’s the Wally Weekes Pool at the northern end of Bondi beach, which has the kiddie paddling pool Mermaid Baths next to it. Then on the south side, there’s Bondi Baths and the famous Bondi Icebergs. WHERE: BONDI BEACH

Public Art

Bondi Beach is a local and national icon. As part of the exciting upgrade of beach front Campbell Pde, Waverley Council has commissioned Australian artists to celebrate Bondi Beach and its community in public art works. Public art enlivens our streets, parks and public places and reflects community values. The local community wanted the artworks on Campbell Pde to reflect Bondi's unique heritage and cultural life in which the beach plays such an important role. WHERE: CAMPBELL PDE, BONDI BEACH

A SMALL GLASS BOTTLE TELLS A LARGE STORY It may be small, but this glass perfume bottle on display at the Sydney Jewish Museum tells a large story. Recently donated by Australian heritage consultant, David Logan, this 19th century glass bottle is the first Nazi-looted artwork in the Museum’s collection. Wilhelm Perlhoefter, David Logan’s grandfather, was a Jewish merchant in Breslau, Germany. At the age of 12 he began collecting porcelain, china and glass from antique dealers. This green bottle was one of a series of glass items in Perlhoefter’s collection, made by Bohemian master craftsman Friedrich Egermann using the lithyalin process. If you look closely, the surface of the bottle resembles marble or semi-precious stone. After the National Socialists came to power in 1933, Perlhoefter lost his business. Following Kristallnacht in 1938, Perlhoefter was later arrested and deported to Buchenwald concentration camp. He was released, aged 60, on condition that he leave Germany, so he and his wife migrated to England. As a condition of being allowed to leave Germany, local authorities demanded that museum directors from Breslau and the surrounding areas be ‘invited’ to select items from Perlhoefter’s collection. Those items that weren’t selected, his friend packed up in a crate, which was later shipped to England after the war. In 2018, David Logan’s cousin came across an exhibition of looted artworks at the Görlitz Museum of Cultural History in Germany, in which four pieces from Perlhoefter’s collection were being exhibited.

The museum stated they were looking for the rightful heirs of these items. After a process of proving they were indeed the descendants of Wilhelm Perhoefter, David repatriated one of the four vessels; it was decided the other three were to remain in the Görlitz Museum’s collection so they can continue to tell the story of the extent of Nazi looting in Germany.

Memorial tree planted to honour the life of the late Mr Jack Mundey AO Waverley and Randwick City councils have planted a tree in Centennial Parklands in honour of the late urban conservationist and unionist Mr Jack Mundey AO in celebration of his pivotal role in defending Sydney’s built environment and heritage. Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, said Mr Mundey’s active leadership in preservation of Waverley’s heritage and environment, including local parks, has had a significant impact and created a valuable legacy for generations to come. “Mr Mundey pioneered the path-breaking green bans that combined union power with the environmental movement and together with building workers and community groups saved urban green spaces, preserved workers’ houses in the inner city, and guarded valuable historic buildings against demolition,” Mayor Masselos said. “These green bans provided a lifeline for dozens of NSW resident action groups and played a crucial role in saving large tracts of Sydney from demolition. “Waverley is delighted to join Randwick City Council and Greater Sydney Parklands in honouring Mr Mundey’s contribution to the environment, heritage, workers’ rights

and the social justice movement and the lasting legacy that should always be remembered.” Mayor of Randwick City, Danny Said, said every year, millions of people have the freedom to enjoy the open spaces of Centennial Parklands, Woolloomooloo, The Rocks and other areas around Sydney thanks to the vision, passion and leadership of Jack Mundey. “He fought for the environment before the worth of environmental activism was recognised. He valued the importance of people and the power they possess when they work together,” Mayor Said said. “He is the reason so much of Sydney’s character has been retained in the face of overdevelopment. I can’t think of a better way to honour his legacy and inspire future generations than to plant a tree in his memory and watch it flourish.” Mr Mundey was born John Bernard Mundey on Oct 17, 1929 on a farm in the Atherton Tableland, Queensland, where he was raised by his father and older siblings after his mother died when he was six years old. With a natural talent for sport, he moved to Sydney in 1951 as a professional footballer and played rugby league for the Parramatta Eels for three years, while also working as a labourer.

In 1965, during the anti-Vietnam war movement against conscription, Mr Mundey and two other activists, held one of Australia’s first sit-ins. Throughout his life, Mr Mundey would put himself on the line for many causes. During the 1960s, Mr Mundey was an outspoken and active leader of the Builders’ Labourers Federation (BLF), campaigning for better work conditions. By 1968, he had been elected secretary of the NSW Builders Labourers Federation and instituted 40 green bans – a type of strike in which union members refused to work on projects – saving much of Sydney’s heritage and environment spaces.

From 1984 to 1987, he served as a councillor on the City of Sydney and was appointed chair of the NSW Historic Houses Trust. In 1998, he was elected as one of the National Trust of Australia's 100 Living National Treasures and in 1999 was awarded Life Membership of the National Trust of NSW. He was also awarded life membership of the CFMEU, Unions NSW and the Local Government Association of NSW. In 2000, he was made an Officer in the Order of Australia and by the early 2000s, had joined the Greens and remained a member until his death.

MERVE NOTCHES UP A CENTURY

World War Two veteran Merve Tickle celebrated his 100th birthday with special guests, a large cake coated in blue icing and some recollections of times past.

of the Japanese Instruments of Surrender on September 2, 1945, the same day surrender documents were signed in Japan. His final navy posting was on board the minesweeper HMAS Goulburn.

He recounted how he was living in Paddington when he plucked up the courage to ask out his bride-to be Audrey. They went to see a western called Destry Rides Again and months later went to the altar. They were married for 73 years before Audrey passed away aged 92 in 2015.

AN ADVENTUROUS LIFE

Now Merve resides at the Mark Moran aged care home in Little Bay, where festivities to mark his birthday were laid on by the Maroubra RSL sub-branch. A former member of both the Royal Australian Army and Navy, Merve was joined by nine veterans, four of them having served like himself in WW2. The vets formed a guard of honour in the dining room at Morans. Party pies, scones, sandwiches and that blue cake (a nod to Merve’s navy service) were brought out. After two years in the army during WW2, he switched to the Royal Australian Navy, working as a cook from March 1943 to June 1946. Stationed on board HMAS Moresby off the cost of Timor, he witnessed the signing

Upon leaving the armed services, Merve worked in different jobs including taxi driver, truckie and garage owner. He ended up working as a spray painter with Qantas, a position he held for two decades. After retirement, he and Audrey took advantage of the Qantas travel discount and flew to a host of destinations around the world. They also took 32 cruises, including one where they survived the sinking of the Mikhail Lermontov off the coast of New Zealand in 1986. The Soviet cruise liner had its hull gouged open by rocks in the Marlborough Sounds. One crew member died, but 737 passenger and crew were rescued by a flotilla of vessels ranging from small craft to an LPG tanker. As well as doing a lot of travel during his retirement, Merve developed a love of lawn bowls, playing for Matraville RSL plus Qantas and competing in tournaments in New Zealand and the United States.

Guests at Merve’s birthday bash included Randwick mayor Danny Said, Maroubra RSL Sub-Branch VP Jim Coady, Sub-Branch welfare officer Warren Crotty and Chief Petty Officer David Hanes from the Governor Generals office.

How does Merve feel about having made the century? “I feel very lucky to have lived all these years,” he told Eastern Suburbs Life. And what was the secret of his happy 73-year marriage to Audrey? “Give and take.” Merve said. “Give and take.”

Also there were daughters Pat and Carolyn. There was a son, Robert, but Merve has out-lived him – Robert passed away last year aged 77.

Warmer this winter with Cuddle Bundles Meet Cuddle Bundles volunteers Ella Lizor, Celia Trakman and Michele Brandenburger, with Nadene Alhadeff, Executive Director of Mum for Mum NCJWA (NSW). They’re packing parcels of goods for families with young babies and limited means. Cuddle Bundles is an Eastern Suburbs volunteer group which started as an extension of the Mum for Mum program. Mum for Mum volunteers are all mothers themselves, and they offer ongoing emotional support to vulnerable and isolated mothers in the first year of their baby’s life. Michele and Nadene co-founded Cuddle Bundles in 2018, and Ella joined as co-manager alongside Michele soon afterwards. “We wanted to help the hundred-plus mums supported by Mum for Mum each year, knowing there are good quality used baby goods out there in the community,” Michele said. “And soon we began supporting other disadvantaged women — in refuges, shelters and hospitals.”

HEFFRON CENTRE PLANS APPROVED Construction of a new state-of-theart community sporting centre in Maroubra is set to commence in mid-2021 following approval of a Development Application by the Sydney Eastern City Planning Panel earlier this month (March 2021).

The centre is designed to maximise natural light and ventilation to reduce the use of air conditioning and electricity. It includes rooftop solar panels, rainwater and stormwater collection, bicycle parking and charging infrastructure to cater for the growth in electric vehicles.

The $58m Heffron Centre will be built in Maroubra’s Heffron Park replacing the existing run-down 1940s buildings which currently house an Indoor Sports Centre and Gymnastics Centre.

Dune style planting will integrate the building into the park. New landscaping will include Australian native grasses reflecting the coastline and more than 100 new native trees and shrubs will be planted. New seating areas will face the popular criterium track and new cycle and pedestrian paths will connect with popular existing routes.

The Heffron Centre will include: • A new indoor multi-purpose sports centre with two halls to accommodate sports such as netball, basketball, badminton, volleyball and indoor futsal. • A new dedicated gymnastics centre 33% larger than the existing building with high quality amenities such as air conditioning, dedicated changerooms and bathrooms, office administration and parent/participant viewing areas. • South Sydney Rabbitohs community and high-performance centre including facilities to support Souths Cares’ educational and community programs. The project is funded by State and Federal governments, Randwick City Council and South Sydney Rabbitohs, to invest in local participation in sport. The building will be fully owned by Randwick City Council with lease arrangements in place to the South Sydney Rabbitohs and operators of the indoor sports centre and gymnastics centre.

An artist's impression of new Heffron Centre

Randwick Mayor Danny Said explains the Heffron Centre will transform the western precinct of Heffron Park. “This is an important investment in the health and wellbeing of our community. We have designed a facility which is adaptable to cater for the changing needs of our community." “You don’t get an opportunity like this very often, to provide a state-of-the-art sporting facility and at the same time deliver social benefits, that tap into the proud and almost spiritual link the Rabbitohs have with our community,” explains Mayor Said. Randwick Council has called for expressions of interest for operators interested in running the gymnastics centre and indoor community sports centre components of the Heffron Centre.

HAPPY HOUR

Children and young people are consistently exposed to a higher level of stress in their day-to-day experiences than ever before. Most concerning is the impact of stress hormones on the architecture of the brain. A little cortisol aids the functioning of the brain but oversupply is damaging. Neuroscientists have identified that the impact of long term exposure to elevated levels of cortisol triggers changes in brain structure and fewer neurons. Combating the damaging effect of cortisol is important for brain and heart health and one of the most pressing issues for our children’s health today. The good news is that the same research alerting us to the damage of cortisol on the human body is also providing us with a way to reverse it – and unlike other medicines it is pleasurable and painless! The secret is kindness! When we experience kindness, our body rewards us with a surge of hormones known as oxytocin and serotonin that provide reduce the cortisol levels in our body. It is basically a two for one deal, with both the giver and the receiver being rewarded with the same health benefits.

Creating opportunities for children to practise gratitude and kindness in their daily life will have positive effects on their health and wellbeing. Kindness is an act that must be role modelled, taught, practiced and repeated. Not intermittently or by default, but a steady diet of giving and receiving and part of our daily practices and routines. Improving children’s’ health and wellbeing starts with being aware of the power of activating the right hormones for healthy immune function and brain development through gratitude, kindness and the power of giving back to others. For more ideas on how to help you child practice kindness and gratitude go to the Kids Giving Back website for free downloadable resources or enrol in our programs that immerse children 6-18 years old in giving back to the community www.kidsgivingback.org

20 COUNCIL NEWS WOOLLAHRA

Important COVID update

Following confirmation of multiple COVID-19 cases in the eastern suburbs and new health restrictions implemented by the NSW Government, we have made some changes to our services, facilities and local amenities to help reduce the spread of the virus and keep our staff and our community safe and well.

WAVERLEY

PUDO zones get a makeover

One year ago, Waverley Council started providing special Pick Up and Drop off (PUDO) bays. These are stopping bays where motorists are allowed to pick up and drop off passengers. Problem was, the signage didn’t make the zones stand out enough and they haven’t had a lot of use, according to feedback from the community. But now Waverley Council is changing that.

At time of going to press in early July, Council’s Customer Service Centre, Libraries, Preschool and community venues have been closed until further notice, and as a precaution, we have postponed or cancelled our upcoming events. Updates on the status of our services and events will be available on our website: www.woollahra.nsw.gov.au. You can get customer service support over the phone on 9391 7000 or lodge an online service request via our website. A delivery box will be available at our Customer Service Centre for anyone customer who needs to drop any paperwork. Library staff are available on 9391 7100 or library@woollahra.nsw.gov.au, and you can also download the Woollahra Libraries App and access the library from your phone. Council meetings are livestreamed on our website.

Local testing

Drive-through testing is available from Laverty Pathology located at Lyne Park, Vickery Ave, Car Park, Rose Bay from 8am to 10pm daily. The Rushcutters Bay Park pop-up clinic run by St Vincent's Hospital is located at Sir David Martin Reserve on New Beach Rd, Darling Point and is available for walk-in tests only between 8am and 8pm. Edgecliff Commercial Centre Strategy

Our Draft Edgecliff Commercial Centre Planning and Urban Design Strategy aims to provide a clear and coordinated approach to future planning for the Edgecliff Commercial Centre, which is an important local hub for our community. T

Council rejects Meriton's bid for 17-storey apartment

Randwick Mayor Danny Said has called the rejection of Meriton’s bid for a 17-storey apartment complex at Little Bay as “a win for the community and for common sense.” The property giant’s plan was unanimously rejected by the Sydney Eastern Planning Panel, which ruled the scale and bulk of the development was not in keeping with the area. Meriton wanted to build 1900 apartments on a site beside Long Bay Jail it purchased in 2017 for $254. Randwick Council knocked back the plan last year and Meriton then took it to the NSW government panel – which has now given the thumbs-down to it too.

Bold diagonal yellow stripes will be painted on the roadway, along with the words ‘PUDO ONLY.’ Assuming drivers know what the acronym PUDO stands for, the move should improve road safety in busy areas such as Bondi Junction and Bondi Beach. You can stop in the bay for a maximum of two minutes. Find out more: https://bit.ly/2T83lCv

More beach volleyball at Bondi

The number of beach volleyball courts at Bondi is being increased from three to five following a community survey which found 92% of people supported more courts. But 70% of people gave the thumbs-down to any further courts at Tamarama, which already has three in a much smaller area than Bondi. Bronte will remain volleyball-free because it is smaller still and the sport would impact adversely on regular beach users.

Council blacklists Adani Coal suppliers

Mayor Said called the decision was “a vindication of Randwick Council’s original refusal of this outrageous overdevelopment in 2020. This sends a strong message to all developers that you cannot ride roughshod over existing planning controls and disregard the community – no matter who you are.” The mayor commended the work done by the group Save Little Bay in drawing community support to the issue and said a local event would be held to celebrate the win.

Malabar gym opens

The new Malabar Beach outdoor gym, located just metres from the water, has been completed and is open for use. With equipment that includes a cycle, elliptical trainer, leg press, chest press, pull up bar, roman rings, a sit up bench, step up station and more, there could be no more beautiful place to tone up or work up a sweat. The equipment installed at the new gym has been specifically chosen to suit people of all ages and fitness levels.

Waverley Council is reviewing its procurement policies to ensure it does not do business with companies supplying goods or services to coal miner Adani.

“Council recognises the importance of engaging suppliers that operate in an environmentally responsible manner when providing goods or services,” said a report by Executive Procurement Manager Vince Tari.

Marjorie O'Neill MP MEMBER FOR COOGEE Hello Everyone! One of my top priorities has been campaigning for the protection of our community’s bus services. On May 6, the Minister for Transport revealed plans to remove 25 bus routes from across the Eastern Suburbs. Currently, the following bus routes are being cut: 300, 301, 302, 309X, 310X, 314, 316, 317, 338, 353, 357, 372, 373, 376, 377, 391, 393, 394, 395, 400, 400N, L94, X40, X93, and X99. In addition to these cuts, 23 routes will be modified to force the community to use the Sydney South Eastern Light Rail, increasing the number of modes of transport and extending the journey time. Currently, the following bus routes are planned to be modified: 303, 304, 307, 309, 313, 320, 339, 339X, 343, 347, 355, 362, 370, 373X, 374, 374X, 377X, 392, 397, 399, 418, 420, 420N. Bus services have already been reduced and cut, including the M10, M50, 891, 893, 378 and 361, and these further cuts will be devastating to our community. I am vehemently against the privatisation of our buses, and will oppose any cuts to our bus routes, any reduction in services and the removal of any bus stops. Public buses are part of the fabric of our community. They take us where we need to go, be it to work, to our schools, to the library, to the city, to our hospitals, and to our local businesses. Buses take cars off the road, and ease congestion on our streets, as well as reduce our carbon footprint. The greatest impact we can have on all of these factors, is by having the light rail and our buses working together, not replacing one type of service with another. What you can do to support our campaign to save our buses: • Complete our community petition against these cuts and share it with your friends and family. To access the petition, scan the QR code below. •Complete the Government's community consultation survey ‘Have Your Say On The South East Bus Changes’, and let them know what you think about their shameful bus cuts to our community.

Building site cranes a blot on the landscape

Local residents Richard Horton and Jason Lister, who are members of the Malabar Precinct, requested an outdoor gym to be installed here in 2019. Community consultation confirmed that this was a view supported by the wider community and that a location close to the water’s edge was preferred.

Waverley Council will ask NSW Planning Minister Rob Stokes “requesting that appropriate action be undertaken in relation to tower cranes to allow the regulation and imposition of conditions in relation to standards, safety and amenity and limit the occupation of tower cranes on building sites.”

“Malabar Beach truly is a beautiful part of the world, visitors can’t believe how stunning it is when I bring them here,” stated Randwick Mayor Danny Said as he tested out the new equipment. “I’m pleased that we’ve been able to provide this for the community. I know they’ll love it and the gym will get a lot of use, particularly because it has been designed so that no matter where you are on your fitness journey, you’ll get a great workout here.

Is the view from your home dominated by a massive crane jutting skywards from a building project which seems to be taking as long as the pyramids?

To view our concept designs and have your say on the Draft Strategy, visit yoursay.woollahra.nsw.gov.au/edgecliff before July 30. All respondents to our short survey have an opportunity to win a $200 Good Food gift card.
