Public Art

Bondi Beach is a local and national icon. As part of the exciting upgrade of beach front Campbell Pde, Waverley Council has commissioned Australian artists to celebrate Bondi Beach and its community in public art works. Public art enlivens our streets, parks and public places and reflects community values.

The local community wanted the artworks on Campbell Pde to reflect Bondi's unique heritage and cultural life in which the beach plays such an important role.

A SMALL GLASS BOTTLE TELLS A LARGE STORY

It may be small, but this glass perfume bottle on display at the Sydney Jewish Museum tells a large story. Recently donated by Australian heritage consultant, David Logan, this 19th century glass bottle is the first Nazi-looted artwork in the Museum’s collection.

Wilhelm Perlhoefter, David Logan’s grandfather, was a Jewish merchant in Breslau, Germany. At the age of 12 he began collecting porcelain, china and glass from antique dealers. This green bottle was one of a series of glass items in Perlhoefter’s collection, made by Bohemian master craftsman Friedrich Egermann using the lithyalin process. If you look closely, the surface of the bottle resembles marble or semi-precious stone.

After the National Socialists came to power in 1933, Perlhoefter lost his business. Following Kristallnacht in 1938, Perlhoefter was later arrested and deported to Buchenwald concentration camp. He was released, aged 60, on condition that he leave Germany, so he and his wife migrated to England. As a condition of being allowed to leave Germany, local authorities demanded that museum directors from Breslau and the surrounding areas be ‘invited’ to select items from Perlhoefter’s collection. Those items that weren’t selected, his friend packed up in a crate, which was later shipped to England after the war.

In 2018, David Logan’s cousin came across an exhibition of looted artworks at the Görlitz Museum of Cultural History in Germany, in which four pieces from Perlhoefter’s collection were being exhibited. The museum stated they were looking for the rightful heirs of these items. After a process of proving they were indeed the descendants of Wilhelm Perhoefter, David repatriated one of the four vessels; it was decided the other three were to remain in the Görlitz Museum’s collection so they can continue to tell the story of the extent of Nazi looting in Germany. David Logan generously offered to donate this historic glass bottle to the Sydney Jewish Museum.

Now, this precious repatriated perfume bottle is on display on the Museum’s ground floor as a way to honour Perlhoefter and its journey back to its rightful heir.
