Ocean pools came into fashion as part of the trend towards swimming as a competitive sport. Recreational and competitive swimmers needed a place to do laps, safe from strong waves and the risk of shark attacks. There’s the Wally Weekes Pool at the northern end of Bondi beach, which has the kiddie paddling pool Mermaid Baths next to it. As part of the exciting upgrade of beach front Campbell Pde, Waverley Council has commissioned Australian artists to celebrate Bondi Beach and its community in public art works. Public art enlivens our streets, parks and public places and reflects community values.
