systems. Employing straight exhaust pipes improves efficiency, as with variable-speed clean-

air fans whose rotation speed is continuously adjusted to demand. Energy savings can be achieved even at the decision-making stage when purchasing a new compressor. Most machines only require a pressure of seven bar. Reducing the nominal pressure from 10 to seven reduces electric consumption by 20 percent. More examples

Oetarjo Hariohoehojo, chairman of the provincial branch of the Indonesian Furniture and Handicraft Producers Association (Asmindo), said the association are lobbying former buyers of Chinese goods to commit to importing Indonesian products. The Jakarta Post report added that Asmindo has been taking part in international furniture exhibitions to promote Indonesian products. According to statistics, some 40 percent of the Indonesia’s furniture exports, worth US$2 million per year, come from East Java. rilling is a very large theme and every machine has its own particularities. You have choices from a CNC drilling machine to a universal drilling machine. It seems that CNC machines are more flexible and quicker but it also can be the wrong machine to use. If you do a lot of line drillings on a standard CNC machines, won’t it be a waste of time? What is the precision I want to reach? For example, with a vacuum system clamping the board, mistakes can be made with respect to the Y-axis positioning, depending on the material.

This would not happen on an iron table. In the production, companies invest for cutting, drilling but forget automatic inserting (for furniture: dowels, hinges, RTA fittings, etc). Very often, the decision of inserting has to take drilling into consideration because of their combined operations.

Investing Wisely To invest on the right machine the customer should know: • The flexibility that he needs: Is it possible to work on 32 mm pitch or should it have total flexibility? With this

Drilling Range You can categorise the complete drilling range in four sub-ranges: • Drilling and inserting machine for hinges: these are ‘small’ machines for a workshop setting. The drill head can possibly bore three holes at one time. The pitch between

the drill bits will be specified by the customer (you cannot change them). The advantage of this system is that in one, high-speed movement you can drill three holes. The machine should bore at least two holes on each board. You can use the mechanical stop or fix the board on the table and move the head on the X-axis. Of course, you can combine this aggregate with a standard aggregate to make all the drilling and insert hinges on front doors. • Line drilling machine: For line drilling machine you will have two or three aggregates with stops. On rulers, you will get some stops to make the full range of drilling. The faster the rate of production required, the more number of spindles you will need on the machine.

On particleboards, you can drill very quickly and complete a cycle in 1.5 – 1.8 secs (drilling, gluing, dowel inserting and the movement to the next position). Of course, you can get a top

he £19.8 (US$28.8) million Aquatic Centre, the largest in North East England, is the first phase of a development of sport and educational facilities for the city of Sunderland, UK. The 50 m pool, together with its diving pool and wellness centre, is the only facility of its type between Leeds and Edinburgh. The building is on a site formerly occupied by a part of the city’s past, the Monkwearmouth Colliery, and stands next to the Sunderland football stadium. It is designed to act as a regional hub for swimming events – performance swimming,

diving, synchronised swimming and water polo – as well as attracting national and regional events to the city. It will also act as a community pool, providing facilities for local schools and fostering young talent. The state-ofthe-art wellness centre will, it is hoped, increase participation in exercise. It is also hoped, through support and learning, to encourage the community to choose a healthy lifestyle.

Dimensions, Descriptions The building houses a 50 m competition pool, 25 m wide with 10 lanes, a moveable floor and a moveable boom.

It also contains a 25 m multi-purpose diving tank with moveable floor and a variety of double-width diving boards. The building has seating for 500 spectators, and a variety of changing facilities to meet the needs of disabled and other groups with specific needs. In shape the building is a low, flattened tube with a super-insulated roof of standing seam aluminium cladding. It is sitting on a plinth of coloured, glazed blockwork. The building tucks in against the north side of the football stadium, separated from it by a treelined access road. At one end of the tube is a two-

to transmit the large forces involved. The curved sections of glulam have a radius of 3 m which led to very thin 16 mm laminations relative to the 35 mm laminations that were used on the straight sections. As the bending forces dropped quite quickly away from the curved section of the frame and axial force predominated in the straight sections, it was possible to reduce both the width and the depth of the glulam section – the straight sections are halved in width to 220 mm. In the final design the central apex pin was removed to simplify the structure but the two base connections remained true pinned joints. The central apexes of the glulam beams are not visible in the finished structure; they are enclosed in a suspended glazed roof lantern which runs above the pool. A structural steelwork frame between the glulam beams provides lateral stability, and intermediate support to the roof cladding. The installation was carried out using mobile cranes. The four parts of each frame were lifted in individually, and held in place temporarily by a combination of the cranes and temporary stays. With a ‘super-insulated’ external fabric and a combined heat and power unit – to maximise efficient energy use and minimise energy waste – it is the first 50 m pool to achieve a BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) ‘Excellent’ rating. The timber beams were sourced from managed forests in Austria and a palette of other ‘Green Guide’ materials were used throughout the building. Rainwater falling on the roof is harvested, filtered, treated and used for the pools, reducing the overall use of mains water. FDM ENQUIRY NO. 3101

hat is a wood association and what does it do? Most are publicly committed to represent the best interests of the members and most have mission statements clearly setting out objectives. The National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA), in the US says: “We are the voice of the hardwood industry, representing companies and individuals from all aspects of the industry – sawmills, distribution yards, suppliers, transport companies and landowners. NHLA exists to serve its members and provide them with the tools, information, support and services they need to succeed in a now global industry and economy.”

One contribution to sustainability that associations can make is to promote lesser known or lesser used species.

In this case the provision and maintenance of grading rules and skills for sawn timber are in fact the main function. But NHLA also seeks to disseminate information on the sustainability of US hardwood resources.

Legislation & Standardisation The European Federation of the Parquet Industry (FEP) is the main body representing and defending the interests of the European wood flooring (parquet) industries in the EU. FEP has a rather more difficult task in trying to represent the flooring manufacturers in a wide range of political regimes from Spain to Sweden. Its primary goal is to strengthen and improve the position of wood flooring against other floor covering products, by addressing issues of raw material supply, production, market and internal affairs. Its work boils down to the collection of market data and statistics; the followup of relevant European legislation and standardisation; publication of a newsletter; and organising its annual parquet congress at which it usually issues its annual statistics. FEP is, of course, interested in sustainable production. There are fewer associations in most individual EU countries than in the US, and even fewer in Asia. In the US in Virginia, there is even an association for association executives – a kind of club for association career professionals! All EU countries have timber importer associations and, as the Malaysians have demonstrated well, there can be huge advantages in forging a close working cooperation with some of them. Then the possibilities of working towards common trade goals, including issues of sustainability, are feasible.

Promoting Sustainability In Asia there are few non-governmental wood associations

that can match the strength of the industry product groups, although many also have government support. The furniture industry is a case in point, representing national industries such as those in Malaysia (MFIC), Vietnam (HAWA), Indonesia (ASMINDO) and Singapore (SFIC). In the latter the need is created by the many companies that manufacture offshore and for which exhibitions, marketing and communication is of vital importance – provided by SFIC. One contribution to sustainability that associations can make, however, is to promote lesser known or lesser used species – where they are grown sustainably. For example the promotion by AHEC of soft maple and tulipwood, the two fastest increasing hardwood species in North America, is one of sustainable marketing. The promotion some years ago by Europeans of beech to China was another example of creating a new market for Europe’s most sustainable hardwood species. For today in the wood industry, I have yet to meet the timber man or woman, or association member or officer who is not striving for forest sustainability in some way or other. The industry cannot be sustained without sustainable forest management and harvesting; and all associations know it. FDM ENQUIRY NO. 3107

Even the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) in commissioning a risk assessment on illegal hardwoods entering the export wood chain, can do no more than evaluate, present and monitor the reality, rather than control it. The essential role of any association is to lobby politically, provide information, speak with one voice and provide services that members have identified are needed – from collective insurance rates to participation at exhibitions and provision of accurate and regular news bulletins. The core activity of many however, is often the annual general get-together, or convention as it is known in the US. And this is where the market can take advantage of supplier associations. Where can you ever find a whole industry under one roof and ready to talk? Whether in conference, breakout seminars, or in the bar, an annual gathering of any association is always worth considering for a visit.

acuum hold technology is any controlled process utilising low pressure that is below-normal atmospheric pressure. The first major use of vacuum technology in industry occurred in the manufacture of electric light bulbs. Other devices requiring a vacuum for their operation followed, such as various types of electron tubes, to the deposition of integrated electronic circuits on silicon chips today. Industrial vacuum applications for woodworking range from mechanical handling (such as the manipulation by suction pads) to drying, impregnating and sawdust removal. Vacuum lifters all work using the same principles, setup and devices. The vacuum lifter contains a number of suction plates, which provides suitable sealing between the workpiece and the vacuum lifter.

Pent-Up Motions The built up pressure presses the workpiece to the vacuum lifter, which is moved by transport units (crane, rail system, etc). The best vacuum clamping systems on the market also usually comes in a modular design. Vacuum wood handling involves suction devices to hold the wooden planks firmly while being conveyed to another area. For example, Anver (of Massachusetts,

For Engineered Wood German company Albert Fezer has two products designed to handle wood. The VacuPoro series was developed for the handling of porous workpieces. A vacuum blower creates such a high volume stream that more air is sucked in than air that streams through the workpiece. This does not create the high-pressure differences as with dense materials, but this is compensated by large suction plates. With a swivel range from 0 - 90 degrees and vacuum rate of 270 m3/hr, the lifters are suitable for transporting dense and porous material, like chipboard, OSB, MDF or other air-penetrable plates. The Octopus system by Italy-based Vuototecnica is designed for palletising robotics and vacuumoperated lifting systems in general. The system consists of a vacuum generator fed by compressed air and a box sealed with a suction plate. The plate is covered by a special foam rubber. Both the box and plate are made of a light alloy. Threaded connections are present on the vacuum box for connection to solenoid valves, which can be used for quick release systems. The company claims the suction plate allows any surface of shape to be handled, smooth, rough or irregular. The system

The company’s WP-Series wood plank lifters have either two or four foam seal vacuum pads. The pads adjust along a frame and sized suction flow to handle the cracks, crevices, and knots in wood. The lifters have two parking stands to keep the foam seal vacuum pads off the floor when the lifter is stored. The foam seal pads are made of urethane, EPDM, nitrile, and various dual-durometer materials.

Versatile Range Another German company, J Schmalz, has a range of vacuum products specifically for handling wood. Its VacuMaster allows a worker to lift and move workpieces weighing up to 2,000 kg. The loads can not only be lifted and moved in a horizontal position, but also swivelled by 90 degrees or turned through 180 degrees. This is

The Innospann vacuum clamping system, also from the same company, consists of a steel-plate with vacuum apertures, suction blocks like quad or mono bases with vacuum stops. The vacuum apertures are sealed with magnetic plugs, allowing quad or mono bases to be positioned freely on the steel-plate. In addition to mounting up to four standard vacuum cups, vacuum stops can also be mounted on the quad base for precise positioning of the workpiece during clamping. Its quad base-G has two vacuum connections: the vacuum applied to the first connection fixes the quad base-G on the smooth machine table. The company claims the system can be retrofitted on any CNC machining centre.

Other Vacuum Uses Other vacuum technologies involved in wood processing include drying, impregnating, and removal of sawdust and woodworking residues. Wood drying involves driving out moisture from the wood material, most commonly at elevated temperatures. In the end, they concluded that they required a fully automated system that could work in multi-shift operations as most of the doors and frames are manufactured individually to meet the customers’ specifications. A large German manufacturer of woodworking machine provided a solution to their first question in the form of a fully automatic edge-machining system. The second question was answered

the ‘rough’ doors are initially inserted into the edge-machining system, where they are completely machined in up to four steps. Depending on the number and the sequence of the machining steps, the doors or frames may pass several times through the system. For this to happen, they are stacked at the end of each step and then returned automatically to the input side of the machining line. As the doors and frames are individual designer jobs, they come in a variety of shapes, sizes, weight, finish, colours and machining standards. A barcode reader at the inlet leading to the edgemachining line reads the related data. The entire production process is then executed automatically and the handling devices, which are equipped with the two vacuum gripper systems, control the entire flow of materials. Each vacuum gripper is mounted as a complete gripper on the scissor-type lifting device. The gripper systems are mounted such that they can be turned, enabling the machine to handle the wooden parts flexibly and when required, placed in the edge-machining system with the correct orientation. For careful handling of the parts, the gripper systems are mounted flexibly on spring elements, and the 25 mm thick

layer of foam material used as suction mats ensures the necessary damping. After installation, the edge-machining system is able to run in single-shift operation, despite the fact that it was designed for

t Ivry-sur-Seine, Paris, France, furniture maker Fourniture and its 17 artisan cabinetmakers (all graduates from the Boulle Art School) turn architect-designers’ dreams into reality. From the design office to the numerical control (NC) phase, they do the preliminary computer work before starting production in its 1,600 sq m workshop. The company’s slogan is ‘You imagine it…. we make it!’ Whether the cabinetmaking workshop produces furniture in a traditional manner, or in a limited production run, the company’s rigour has already attracted top architects and contemporary designers. These include Sylvain Dubuisson and Pierre Paulin, whose works are distributed through the company. With clients such as France’s Ministry of Culture, they have experienced demanding

It processes in a numerical chain manner, allowing errors to be avoided. This means gaining a considerable amount of time in transition between the design office and the workshop. All the toolpaths are calculated taking the geometry of the model to be produced into account, as well as its aim predefined during the design phase. Any modification in the design is replayed on the machining stage, without having to reconsider all of the machine’s working hypotheses (positioning of the part, identification of operations, choice of tools, etc). The generation of new ISO blocks following a modification is extremely fast. “Working in a 3D environment with the geometry of the machine allows exact simulation of what will really happen in manufacturing. This simulation means I avoid having to anticipate any risk of programming errors,” says Mr Mohy. The software allows a considerable amount of time saved, with automatic analysis for the machining of assembly parts. It is a realistic preparation for machining which, in addition to its ease of use, improves the manufacturing quality.

Utilising Different Woods In furniture making, the recurring question “Which wood should be used?” is often discussed. “With maple, for example, the difficulty is that it is light, it is white and all the small defects that can be hidden in darker woods show up,” explains Bruno Guillon, manager. “With Fourniture and Mobilier National, I work on wooden furniture. I learn to use wood in the best conditions for its sturdiness despite the rather complex forms that I risk giving it. This work with wood techniques is combined with sophisticated discussion about the past, be it Chinese or Italian,” Mr Paulin says. “Overall, we save time, even if the computing part has been extended. We invest more time in computing and less in production. T

he industrial production of light-weight construction (honeycomb) panels needs special tools. These lightweight construction panels available on the market today are very different in their machining characteristics, so in many cases demand specially adapted tools. In furniture and interiors, panels with a sustainable outer layer and a honeycomb paper core are used often. Honeycomb panels have the characteristic of large cavities in the middle. Using these panels means a reduction in raw materials despite the trend for greater panel thicknesses. Because of their lower weight and high strength, lightweight panels are a real alternative to solid wood, chipboards and medium density fibreboards.

Saw The Difference Woodworking companies process honeycomb panels on standard panel sizing saws. The structure of the honeycomb panels with the cavities in the middle layer is the reason why standard panel sizing sawblades do not give a good cut result. It is recommended to use tools with reduced cutting pressure – otherwise the honeycomb core collapses. The ideal tool for a smooth cut edge is a circular sawblade with aggressive tooth geometry. This cutting geometry avoids material tear-out and delamination of the board and breakout. But despite this cutting edge geometry, the cutting pressure can cause breakout on the exit to the cut in material with an open honeycomb. Here, it is crucial that the cutting pressure is always positioned against the outer layer in boards with an open

honeycomb structure. It is also crucial to use a scoring sawblade. When first using thin-kerf sawblades for this application it is important to check the width of the machine riving knife. The standard riving knife may be too wide and need to be changed.

Edgebanding Options In principle there are two choices when edgebanding honeycomb panels. The choice depends on the structure of the surface panels and honeycomb. If the surface panels are thicker than 8 mm the edgeband can be applied directly to the honeycomb panel. The edgeband is glued to the edge of the surface panel. This requires sufficient gluing faces on the narrow edges of the surface panels and high edge rigidity. This process is preferred for workpieces with profiled edges or when high loads are to be accommodated eg: for tabletops. Processing in this case is with conventional hoggers, jointing cutters or shank tools with cutting geometry optimised to reduce the cutting forces. The majority of the available light construction furniture boards however have thin surface panels eg: 4 mm HDF. Edgebanding requires forming rebates in the edges of the surface panels and applying an edging strip. Strips of MDF, particleboards or hard fibreboards are suitable for the edging strip. Profiling tools specially designed to suit the different materials machine grooves in the face of the edging strip. These grooves must exactly match the profile in the surface panels.

Differing Needs The cutting forces that arise from the milling tool must not cause

delamination of the honeycomb core or the surface panel. The cut quality to the honeycomb is not critical, but the honeycomb chips must not constrain the application of the edging strip. Tooling sets either of stacked sawblades or of tools with a staggered cut are suitable for this operation. Before gluing the edging strip, the faces of the surface panels are trimmed either by hoggers or jointing cutters. If the excess to be trimmed is large then jointing is preferable because of the high cutting forces on the thin panels. Using hoggers can cause the board to vibrate. In principle the two machining procedures have different power requirements. The cutting power requirement for jointing rises linearly with rising board thickness, whereas it declines with hogging. That means that hogging needs less power than jointing to machine board thicknesses. The Leitz DT-hogging programme offers a suitable range of hoggers for this application. Finishing the edges on lightweight honeycomb panels is done with conventional tools and standard machine setups. However, to ensure a smooth radius hogging without vibrations, it is important to reduce the pressure from the ENQUIRY NO. 3301 surface rollers. FDM

Right from the start, Planit gave the company a system where its operators can take the digital representation (CAD version) of any kitchen, feed it directly into a nesting machinery and turn around a finished product very quickly. Shrinking exports, lack of skilled personnel, uncertainties within the industry as a whole, were problems that had to be considered by KTSB. After much deliberation, a decision was reached that would see the company making a bold transition: One that would take them from a successful OEM office manufacturer into a company that also served the home market in terms of kitchen, wardrobe and built-in cabinets.

Leapfrogging Into The Market En Zul Hakim, its MD says the only way the company (located in Klang, Selangor) could be transformed was by investing in its future. They took a look at the software systems available in the market and started to analyse as to which one could offer them a most suitable platform for the planned launch. “What we were planning was about to see us change from a office furniture manufacturer into a full-blown kitchen and wardrobe manufacturer, so we had to get it right first time,” says En Zul Hakim. “We had a thorough look and decided upon Cabinet Vision from Planit, to help us leapfrog into the market. The system allowed us to set-up using an automated nesting technology.” Being flexible and more accurate, the system

What’s going for it…

Laminate flooring was developed in the early 80’s. The product is built as separate component layers, then fused together under heat and pressure. Laminate flooring has evolved quickly in recent years, filling a need for a good looking, durable flooring that is functional, easy to install and has a good environmental story to tell.

So how does all this impact the environment? The core is commonly referred to as a HDF or MDF (high or medium density fibre) board It is composed of wood fibres and resins, cured under heat and pressure. The surface and backing layers are a build-up of paper and resins, merged together under heat and pressure. The decorative layer is typically a paper printed with pigments that provide a stable and colour fast visual. The resin system, which is water based,

Laminate floors are normally given one of the best classifications for low emission levels attributed to volatile organic components (VOC), including formaldehyde. Many manufacturers of laminate flooring participate in some form of environmental labelling or credits (eg: USGBC LEED, FloorScore, GreenGuard, CHPS 1350, Blue Angel, Nordic Ecolabel, etc). Although Indoor Air Quality is only one part of environmental consideration, laminate flooring does well in this regard. The high fibre content, in combination with the chemically stable cured resins, make laminate flooring well adapted for recycling, which is the preferred option. Laminate flooring, similar in characteristics to construction waste, can be land filled or utilised for wasteto-energy applications, as appropriate. he 21st century is regarded by many as the Asian century, with the continent expected to emerge as the major growth region during this period. In this context, Asia is poised to play dominant roles in many global arenas, ie: economic, political and environmental aspects. Against this background, Asia is also expected to show leadership in facing up to environmental challenges, particularly those related to global warming and forest resources. As it is, the forests in Asia play critical roles in accounting for most of the terrestrial plant biomass and in regulating global temperature by sequestering carbon. Further, the forest resources also contribute to stable, fertile landscapes for human settlement. They also provide numerous timber and non-timber resources and are places of recreation. For the large population of indigenous people in Asia, the forest also has important

spiritual significance. The forest resource in Asia is also fuelling the rapid growth of the value-added wood products sector in the region, and inevitably has gained tremendous socioeconomic importance. However, the forest resources remain in a state of crisis. They are threatened by a complex array of forces that undermine their ability to fulfill vital ecological and societal functions.

A Stock Take According to the FAO (Food and Agricultural Organization), the total forest cover in the region was estimated at 580 million hectares in 2005, approximately 14 percent of the global forest cover. Some 25 percent of the total landmass in Asia is covered by forests, although this figure differs widely from country to country: China (25.7 percent), India (22 percent), Indonesia (58 percent), Japan (64 percent), the Republic of

Korea (63 percent), Malaysia (59 percent), Philippines (19 percent), Thailand (29 percent), Vietnam (30 percent), Cambodia (56 percent), and Lao PDR (54 percent). The largest natural forests in the region are found in China, Australia and Indonesia, covering nearly 65 percent of Asia’s total forested area. Moreover, two of the world’s largest plantation programmes are located in China and Vietnam. According to statistics available from the FAO, 61 percent of global forest plantations are in Asia, with around 34 million hectares of new forest plantations established in the 1990s. At 16 percent, the proportion of the total forested areas in Asia accounted for by plantations is much higher than the global average of about five percent. This clearly reflects the importance of forest plantations in the wood supply balance in the region. According to a report

Compromised Situation As the coverage of natural forest continues to decline throughout the region, many Asian nations have begun to pursue ambitious plantation policies. This is to cater to the anticipated short supply in wood resources to meet the growing domestic demand. Despite its sizeable forest stock, by most account, Asian countries are indeed in fibre deficit, as most of the forest resources are protected, with minimal amount of harvesting permitted. Hence, the large wood products manufacturing industry in Asia is highly dependent on plantation wood resources and imported wood resources to cater for their needs. Unless there is a dramatic increase in the natural forest production of wood resources, which is very unlikely, this trend of dependence on forest plantation wood resources will become the apparent landscape of wood products industry in the region.

In fact, statistics reveal that almost 40 percent of all available wood biomass that can be extracted during the harvesting process is left behind on the harvesting site, due to economics and logistics problems. Calculations on the amount of harvesting wastage suggest that there is sufficient wood biomass to meet the annual demand of 60 million m3 of processing capacity in the region, if all this waste is put to good use. On the account of the many previous studies on this subject and based on an IFRG report in 2008, several measures can be taken to improve the wood supply situation in the region. Among the notable measures recommended are: • Increased use of waste from harvesting, milling and processing activities, through the provision of incentives, tax breaks, etc. • Changing the existing development paradigm that stresses industrialisation, to ensure sustainable development takes place, while fulfilling the demands of all the stakeholders. • Putting the powerful actors with vested interest in forest exploitation into perspective, by ensuring that the processing capacity is not expanded at the expense of the productive capacity of the forest estates. If pursued, this will increase the possibility of ‘illegal logging’ and other undesirable activities. • Establishing fast growing wood industrial plantations through the provision of incentives and tax breaks, in order to get active participation of the private sector. Although South-east Asia is blessed with a substantial forest resource, its wood production is rather limited. Hence, the booming wood products industry in the region is highly dependent on wood resources from plantation forests. As a company that both designs and builds its products entirely in-house, SIDD is positioned to provide high end modern furnishings that are interesting, and well made. Founder and lead designer Chris Pritchard describes SIDD products as “an alternative to the disposable furniture that can be purchased just about everywhere now.” He says: “It used to be that you only bought one or two coffee tables in your entire lifetime – and some of those pieces are still around today as antiques. In stark contrast, most of the furniture being manufactured today will need to be replaced within the next two years, and will subsequently end up in landfills. If we spend a little more upfront on investment grade pieces for our homes, they can last a lifetime.

Although green building materials are expected to account for an increasing share of materials used, growth will be driven primarily by the recovery of the

General Characteristics It is a medium hardwood with a density ranging from 495 - 945 kg/m3 air dry. The sapwood is light yellow to yellow brown, sharply defined from the heartwood, which is brown or orange brown and turns to dark brown on exposure. Texture is moderately coarse to coarse but even, with interlocked to deeply interlocked grain. Properties The interlocked grain makes the timber relatively difficult to re-saw and crosscut. Planing is easy to moderately easy, and the planed surface is smooth and lustrous. Nailing property is good. The timber dries with minor defects like slight surface- and end-checks. Shrinkage is low, the average radial shrinkage from green to air dry is 0.9 percent and the tangential shrinkage is 2.2 percent.

The economic crisis is directly affecting all the markets and that is why business rules are changing even as to prices – a trend which applies to Italian technology and the entire European and global technology. During a recession, prices will be unavoidably affected by weak demand. However, you have to always be attentive and work with reliable suppliers. This way, users would understand that market fluctuations would not have any negative influence over the quality and the performance of the technology solutions they are buying.

During the last years of growth, the German manufacturers have prepared themselves for the expected regular periodic downturn (which from today’s perspective started in the middle of last year). Depending on the application, pay back time of less than one year can be achieved in this area. In paint drying lines, energy consumption can be reduced by 45 percent by UV-technology – and the quality of the finish is improved. When renewing a long standing dust extraction system, energy savings of up to 50 percent are possible. Of course, not in all cases such enormous savings can be achieved. But by optimising all process parameters, a significant reduction of resource consumption is always within reach. Counter-cyclical investments have always been a measure to ensure a competitive advantage.

Fine Figures Despite a bad fourth quarter (where the consequences for the German woodworking machinery industry became visible in fading orders), 2008 was quite a successful year for the German woodworking machinery manufacturers. The production of stationary woodworking machinery amounted to E3.4 billion (US$4.6 billion), an 8 percent increase over the previous year. Seventy percent of this total worth E2.4 billion have been exported, 10 percent more than in 2007. The industry comprises of 210 companies with 21,800 employees. The German manufacturers lead the world market with a share of 28.5 percent (+1.1 percent). Italy takes second place with 19.4 percent (-1.3 percent), followed by Taiwan and China. The biggest market for German woodworking machinery in 2008 was Russia, where €E295 million worth of machinery where sold, almost 80 percent more than in the previous year. This jump is valid for all segments, from primary

Whereas Brazil has more than doubled its sales due to plants in the primary sector, the United States have shown a sharp decline earlier than other markets, resulting in a drop of German exports by 42 percent. Within South-east Asia, Thailand is currently the biggest market for German woodworking machinery (due to the many primary processing plants located there). In general, one has to take into consideration that many sales to South-east Asia are not shown in these figures because they are directed through another country. Currently, no reliable forecast for 2009 can be made. The last VDMA forecast for German production of stationary woodworking machinery some months ago was -5 percent (and this can only be held in the unlikely case that markets worldwide recover rapidly). The industry is now looking forward to LIGNA 2009: Then we will see which markets are picking up, and what one can expect from the rest of the year. Dieffenbacher: Multi-Head Diagonal Saw

Dieffenbacher-Zaisenhausen offers a configurable, modular system for continuous panel production (CPS production) with the multi-head diagonal saw. This system is based on synchronising saw units with the panel feed at an angle of up to 30 deg. Cuts can be made rapidly to produce short panels by positioning several autonomous modules in alignment. The saw carriages are driven by servomotors and toothed belts reinforced with steel cords generate force transmission. They are designed to allow maintenance work to be performed and saw blades exchanged whilst production continue. ver 450 Malaysian and international exhibitors pitched their latest and best valuefor-money products in the Malaysia International Furniture Fair (MIFF) to about 6,800 international buyers from over 135 countries. In its 15th year running, MIFF 2009 (March 3 – 7) occupied 80,000 sq m of floor space over two venues – MATRADE Exhibition & Convention Centre (MECC) and Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) to facilitate convenience for buyers, guests and visitors. At the opening ceremony, Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Jacob Dungau Sagan expected the furniture sector, which saw significant growth in trade in 2008, to remain a major contributor to the country’s

export earnings in years to come. Malaysia’s furniture industry recorded an increase of 1.7 percent in total trade to RM8.37 billion (US$2.26 billion) in the first 10 months of 2008. Exports accounted for RM7.17 billion and imports RM1.19 billion during the period. The US was the main export market with a value of RM1.87 billion followed by Japan (RM587.3 million), Australia (RM518.2 million), Britain (RM445.2 million) and Singapore (RM459.3 million). “Malaysian furniture has also captured new markets namely Algeria, Greece, Puerto Rico and Libya. India is also a very big potential market for the furniture players,” said Minister Jacob. However, he acknowledged that continuous efforts were needed to enable the local players to venture into still untapped markets. “The Government will also organise various

promotional programmes through the Malaysian Trade Development Corp to raise the profile of Malaysian brands overseas,” he added. Dato’ Tan Chin Huat, chairman and MD of MIFF (organiser of the event) indicated that MIFF 2009 was poised to achieve sales of US$700 million compared to US$690 million achieved last year. He has also highlighted the possibility of tapping into potential markets in Eastern Europe, China and India, along with CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) countries such as Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia and Kazakhstan in these difficult times. The only incident that marred an otherwise great event was a flash flood on the first day that left the organisers working through the night in Hall 2 of the PWTC. All the exhibits in Hall 2 were moved to MIFF’s twin fairground at MECC by Day 2 of the show. Exhibitors generally remain optimistic throughout the five-day event despite taking a longer time to close deals and many turned to buyers who are willing to pay premiums for quality products. At the end of the show, the organisers reported an eight percent dip in international visitorship – however, in view of the current economic downturn the drop in numbers is relatively minor. n its 28th year running, International Furniture Fair Singapore (IFFS) was held in conjunction with the 26th ASEAN Furniture Show (AFS) over a four-day exhibition (March 9-12). Organised by Singapore Furniture Industries Council (SFIC), the fair spanned a gross area of 60,000 sq m. Preliminary figures of over 40,000 visitors thronged the five exhibition halls at the Singapore Expo in the first three days, viewing an array of furniture and furnishing products by 471 exhibitors from 33 countries. With the current world economic situation, Tony Pang, chairman of the IFFS/ AFS 2009 show advisory panel said many furniture companies were more selective in trade fair participations. Despite this, return exhibitors took up larger booths and close to 30 percent of the total exhibitors are first time participants from countries such as Australia, Belgium, France, the United Kingdom and countries from all over Asia.

Strengthening The Industry At the opening ceremony, Minister of State for Trade and Industry Lee Yi Shyan acknowledged SFIC’s efforts in taking active steps to support their companies. Minister Lee said: “SFIC rolled out its third Members Assistance Scheme (MAS), and already, over 260 of its members have tapped onto the S$1 million (US$661,000) worth of funds to help lower business costs, strengthen business capabilities and explore new opportunities.” Over 60 percent of the funds have

been disbursed and that some 229 SFIC members have already benefitted from this scheme.

Design Takes Prominence A key point of differentiation that SFIC sought to achieve from other fairs was the focus on design. In line with the design emphasis, Minister Lee announced a new SFIC industry initiative known as the Design DNA (Develop, Nurture and Accelerate). Andrew Ng, chairman of IFFS and president of SFIC said: “Design DNA will greatly enhance the council’s efforts in establishing the Republic as the Asian hub for furniture and design excellence.” He noted that local furniture industries have been making use of the exposure offered by IFFS/ADS to launch new product collections and creative designs. Design DNA is a three year programme supported by Spring Singapore that aims to boost overall design standards and capabilities of Singapore furniture companies, designers and students. Targeted at local furniture companies,

designers and students, Design DNA targets four main areas – design seminars, overseas design missions, an interactive e-platform for design promotion and outreach and a capabilities profiling of the furniture industry.

Setting Trends In promoting design entrepreneurship, local venture PLATFORM returned with a showcase of furniture prototypes by over 30 young designers from 11 design houses and institutions. A panel of design experts selected outstanding pieces for a brand new PLATFORM area dedicated to works by Asian designers in creating opportunities for international manufacturers to partner regional design talents. To reach out to even more top tier buyers, the organisers partnered government agency, IE Singapore to tap on their overseas contacts and resources. he 5th Furniture·Lifestyle·Innovations·Perspectives (FL!P) Challenge organised by the Singapore Furniture Industries Council (SFIC), compels participants to innovate and transform existing furniture or raw materials into different works while retaining its basic functions. Open to local arts and design institutes, students are offered a choice to either take part as individuals or in groups of no more than two members. For the 5th FL!P Challenge, students were required to ‘FL!P a chair’ which meant they had to transform the chair into another piece of furniture while retaining its primary seating function. All participants were provided with the Erpo Dining Chair, sponsored by Star Furniture Industries, a local furniture retailer and manufacturer. Simon Ong, Chairman, Design Development Committee, said, “As part of the design push for SFIC, we will continue to encourage young local talents to further their interest and exposure in the design field.” In all, 69 entries were received from 12 schools, reflecting a 20 percent increase from the previous year.
