ver the last 20 years, ProPak Asia has grown from a regional event to an internationally recognised trade show for the packaging industry. This is apparent with the 12 national pavilions from 10 different countries, including Belgium, China, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, UK and the US. The show has become an essential gateway for companies who wish to reach out to Asian customers, with many introducing new innovations and technologies at the event. As Arielle Germez, project manager of Ubifrance which is in charge of the French pavilion, has remarked, “it is an important market and a gateway to the Southeast Asian region and the show gives access to visitors and exhibitors from all other regions.” This year, the French contingent features eight companies, offering products such as renewable and recyclable print shrink film, a unique machine that applies a protection disk and a tamperevident shrink sleeve, roll and blow machines, multilayer packaging machines, grinding and drying machines, as well as energy-saving solutions.

Ms Germez said that they would contemplate on returning next year with more exhibitors and a larger floor space, a sentiment that is shared by Masahiro Abe, assistant manager of the international division of the Japan Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Association. According to Mr Abe, the current packaging machinery production volume in Japan stands at approximately US$5 billion. However, export rate is only around US$380 million, constituting a mere seven to eight percent of the total figure. He said he wishes to increase the figure to over 10 percent, something which he believes can

be achieved if their member companies can expand into ASEAN markets, such as Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, etc. Ginny Woo, manager of international relations at the Association of Small and Medium Enterprises, said that for the Singapore pavilion, ProPak Asia is a “one-stop international processing and packaging event that bridges business connections for the processing and packaging industries”. At the show, Singapore based companies are able to share their latest products and create an opportunity for business collaborations.
