Ms Germez said that they would contemplate on returning next year with more exhibitors and a larger floor space, a sentiment that is shared by Masahiro Abe, assistant manager of the international division of the Japan Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Association. According to Mr Abe, the current packaging machinery production volume in Japan stands at approximately US$5 billion. However, export rate is only around US$380 million, constituting a mere seven to eight percent of the total figure. He said he wishes to increase the figure to over 10 percent, something which he believes can

be achieved if their member companies can expand into ASEAN markets, such as Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, etc. Ginny Woo, manager of international relations at the Association of Small and Medium Enterprises, said that for the Singapore pavilion, ProPak Asia is a “one-stop international processing and packaging event that bridges business connections for the processing and packaging industries”. At the show, Singapore based companies are able to share their latest products and create an opportunity for business collaborations.

Francois Gillard, project manager for Wallonia Foreign Trade and Investment which represents Belgian companies at the show said the aim of their participation is to create a networking opportunity with potential customers from Southeast Asia. They see this as a crucial step towards expansion into Asian markets. Similarly, Gyeonggi Small and Medium Business Center, which has organised the Korea pavilion since 2010, said that Korean companies are identifying the Southeast Asian market as an important access to the global market. According to Kelly Hong, assistant manager of the exhibition convention team of the company, member companies have been satisfied with the outstanding results achieved in previous editions of the show in terms of establishing contact and distributorship. She has witnessed a growing number of participants from her country each year, a trend that is likely to continue.

Representing exhibitors from the UK, Craig Chen, GM of PPMA China said “Thailand is one of our major market in Asia and it is good to see many visitors from other Asian countries.” He added that in future, he would like to increase the size of the UK pavilion and get the support of the UK embassy. Jason Bian, director of PMMI Asia which is responsible for the US pavilion said that Southeast Asia is a very important market for US packaging machinery companies. As he have noted through the years, the requirements from customers in the region have increased and more companies are demanding world class technology for their plants. As for the China pavilion, it continues its rapid expansion in recent years, featuring more companies across a larger exhibiting area. Chinese companies are now offering packaging solutions ranging from small and medium size machines to bigger solutions. Some of the Chinese exhibitors are using the show to familiarise themselves with the requirements of the regional market and touch base with the locals. Just as the other national pavilions, they value the show’s significance as an Asian trading hub where the interests of businesses and customers converge. n

Packaging A New World

Convenience & Safety Glenn Hewson, VP of global marketing at Avure Technologies, started off the conference by sharing how high pressure processing (HPP) systems can be utilised to support the food industry. He noted that consumer trends were driven towards food that are fresh, all natural and without preservatives, convenient, as well as economical. For instance, one of the hottest research and development topics in Europe orientates around ready to eat and ready to heat food. HPP systems help to meet these trends as it pasteurises food without using heat and chemicals like traditional methods. It is also capable of removing pathogens (eg: e coli, salmonella and listeria causing bacteria) without affecting the texture and taste of products. Not only does this eliminate the need for preservatives, it also extends shelf life and allows manufacturers to expand their global distribution reach. While the largest application in the world for HPP revolves around ready to eat meats, Mr Hewson mentioned that the largest growth area in Asia was that of juices and smoothies.

Tracing It Back With increased globalisation, it becomes pertinent for companies to be able to track their products.

The drive for convenience and a changing global village have reshaped the printing and packaging industry, as evidenced by the three speeches given at the ‘North America Packaging Solution 2012’. By Sherlyne Yong This provides more control and enables companies to respond quickly. Barry Chen, president of Squid Ink Asia, illustrated the importance of traceability, and how it can be achieved with printing technology. For starters, he shared how the tracking of products provides customers with assurance. Examples cited included how it can be applied to product expiration management and counterfeit drug detection as well as its usefulness in cases of product recalls. Tracking can be conducted through RFID, taggants and the commonly-employed barcodes. This includes QR codes with high data volumes and quick response rates, whose popularity has been driven by a need for convenience among consumers. Other developments

A Global Village Meanwhile, Cooper Tyo, Asia Pacific sales manager at Automated Packaging Systems shared how e-commerce has changed the packaging and printing industries. More than ever now, companies such as Amazon are shipping out tonnes of products with vast differences in size, shape and function. This development has created the need for adaptability within packaging solutions, such as being able to accommodate atypical shapes and sizes, as well as to facilitate fast shipping and the quick changeovers in inventory. n

The Roots Of

Sustainability

Developments in the food processing and packaging industry are driven by consumer trends that reflect a growing awareness of environmental issues and changes in population demographics, as evident in the speeches given at the Food Innovation Asia Conference. By Sherlyne Yong

T

he Food Innovation Asia Conference started yesterday and will continue until June 16, 2012. Comprising a series of presentations and discussions in plenary, concurrent and poster sessions, informal gatherings, competitions and exhibitions, a platform is created where scientists across academia, governmental groups and food industries congregate to exchange their knowledge and experiences. Fitting the theme of ‘Green and Sustainable Food Technology for All’, the conference kicked off with keynote speeches that included two presentations on biorefinery, presented by Captain Dr Samai Jai-in, from the Engineering Development Department of the Royal Thai Navy, and Professor Dr Martin Reaney from the University of Saskatchewan, as well as one on food technology presented by Mr Hiroyuki Konuma from FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific.

Producing More With Waste With the advent of climate change, nations worldwide are looking for ways to cut down on emissions and engage in sustainability efforts. One of these efforts

includes a shift away from fossil fuels to sources which are more sustainable, leading to the rise of the biomass industry. “Poverty is the worst form of pollution,” said Dr Jai-in, who believed that biorefineries provide a way of poverty reduction. Subscribing to the notion that all small things are important, he said that a diversification in agriculture could lead to reduced labour and a higher production. There are alternative end uses from the food market that Thai farmers should consider as a viable option. For instance, cassava and molasses are used in ethanol biorefinery,

technologies applied in the food processing sector, as well as the efficient and profitable utilisation of their by-products and waste,” said Mr Konuma in his presentation. This has led to a focus on using less materials, reducing waste, and reusing and recycling within manufacturing processes, which allows companies to fulfill their environmental responsibility while improving return on investments.

which farmers can grow instead of other agricultural produce used for direct consumption. Following on this concept is Dr Reaney, who debunked the myth that the use of food is mutually exclusive to either biorefineries or human consumption. He shared the example of brassica seeds, the components of which can be separated in the mill to form the seed coat, oil and protein. In most cases, the oil and protein becomes part of the food supply chain while the hull is discarded. It is however, a rich source of biofuel and can be utilised for that purpose. In fact, the hull’s absorbent properties have also led to it being used as an ingredient in the nutraceutical market and it can also be used for pesticides, as well as protein isolate, which Thailand is a good source of. This alludes to what he calls a “new way of looking at things”, where the most is made out of a material. It is the core principle that the biomass industry is working on, and fulfills it by turning food waste into fuels, heat, as well as value-added chemicals. Of particular note is the huge biorefinery opportunity arising from ethanol, as solutions can be found in the materials left behind from ethanol production. Ending off his presentation, he reiterated that development of the biomass industry requires multitasking at the world level. It is no longer confined to one organisation or country, as boundaries have ceased to exist for material travel. Instead, it is a “turning point towards a green revolution.”

A combination of several factors has fuelled the trend towards convenience and ready to eat foods, the main characteristic of which is the lack of time for food preparation. According to him, this is in part due to the introduction of more women in the workforce, who have traditionally been the ones preparing meals. A busier lifestyle has also led to the boom in food that can be eaten on the go. Other reasons include economic development that comes along with rising affluence and a growing middle class. With increasing income comes a greater demand for quality and variety. This, coupled with a greater awareness of nutritional health and wellness, has led to an increased demand for food that is fortified. People are now willing to pay more for a quality product bundled with benefits, rather than being price-conscious. The effect of a greater health consciousness has also spilled over into the packaging industry, as consumers are more concerned with labeling and nutritional information such as calories, sodium and sugar content.

Going Green Sustainability remains on the forefront of new technologies for the food industry, as food sources are dwindling and the population gets bigger. As such, there is always room for the development of new technologies as manufacturers aim to achieve more with less. Scientists and manufacturers are giving greater attention to the “environmental soundness of

Less Time For Food Preparation

Localisation Often times, developments are driven by motivations, which differ among individuals. The same applies to countries, which have seen changes in technological advances that are influenced by the characteristics of their population. For instance, Mr Konuma has stated that while urban households, in particular those with higher incomes, are heading towards packaged products that are ready to eat, for the lower income households, this normally refers to a shift towards fast food that is unhealthy. Likewise, the main innovations in developing countries are focused on food safety, while developed nations who have already achieved that are heading in the direction of product and package innovation. n

ith the current economic uncertainty in the US and Europe, many have feared that their business will be affected. However, as Mark S Kim, manager of technical sales for Leepack, has noted, the growth of the Asian market has surpassed the west and become dominant enough to sustain business. Having participated in ProPak Asia every year since around 2005, the philosophy of the company is focused on providing multifunctional, economic and flexible packaging solutions that can be fitted in a limited amount of space. Mr Kim said that the show is important as Thailand is a hub where international visitors and customers gather to look for quality machinery. So far, he has already welcomed visitors from regions such as South Africa, Australia, India, Malaysia and Indonesia at the company’s booth. While the company has just begun its expansion plan, he has already identified Indonesia, Vietnae, Malaysia and India as the markets to watch out for in the future. n

or LoeschPark, the decision to make its debut at ProPak Asia 2012 is an easy one. Since the beginning of the year, the company has established its presence in Bangkok with the setting up of a subsidiary. As Ulrich Kreimeyer, director of sales and marketing of the company, explained, Asia is a dynamic market and the show acts as a hub for sales to customers in the region. Being a company that specialises in the packaging of confectionary, he has observed that there is great growth in the Asian market. Part of this can attributed to the demand for new production and expansion of production in Asian countries. “Local producers of chocolate, biscuit and chewing gum are developing very well and we want to grow in the area.” He added. The company is a keen believer in sustainability and feels that the use of biodegradable packaging film on packaging machines is essential for our common future. He highlighted the importance of reducing and preventing waste. He stressed that sustainable design of packaging machines, such as one with reduced power consumption, will be one for the future. Mr Kreimeyer mentioned that so far, his initial impression of the show has been positive. Although the company will do an analysis after the event before making an decision, he thinks it is worthwhile being here and expects to return with a bigger booth next year. n

ith an increased awareness and interest in personal health, consumers are choosing to go the natural route. This has led to a boom in products made from natural sources, whereby organic items are favoured much more over those with synthetic components. Due to their busy lifestyles, consumers have also started exploring alternative ways of getting the required nutrition. According to Dr Nuttanan Sinchaipanid from the Pharmaceutical Industry Association of Thailand, this has inspired the theme for this year’s PharmaTech Seminar – ‘Dietary Supplements’. One of the seminar’s main objectives is to educate the Thai people on the various options in the market. While prevalently dominated by synthetic products, supplements made from natural sources are available in both the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industry. The increased demand for organic products has also spurred scientists to explore the alternative uses of herbs beyond its medicinal benefits. Therefore, one of the seminar’s main objective is to teach participants, made up of scientists, pharmacists and owners of medicine shops, how to replace synthetic products with natural ones. For instance, ginger can be used for both cosmetic and medicinal purposes, such

Bosch:

Flow Wrapping Solutions for Asia

The Pack 111 is the latest horizontal flow wrapper from Bosch Packaging Technology. Manufactured in Amata Nakorn, Thailand, this horizontal flow wrapper has been exclusively developed for the Asian market. With a myriad of feeding options such as magazine feeding, inline feeding, cross belt feeding or as a standalone machine with manual feeding, the machine is an ideal choice as a packaging solution for products such as biscuits, wafers, cakes, chocolates and other items. Reaching a speed of up to 250 packs per min, it offers companies a low Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) through quick changeovers, fast set-up times and minimal product wastages. The small overall footprint of the machine is ideal for expanding businesses and its robust construction is designed for high volume 24 hour production, seven days a week. Incorporating high quality parts from the company, the machine is a perfect fit as a cost effective packaging solution in Asia.

Krones:

Mettler-Toledo:

The Contiroll labeller from Krones decorates containers with wrap-around, reel-fed labels. It has a labeling station that cuts film or paper labels and then uses hotmelt to glue them to the containers. A feed roller, the speed of which is adapted to suit the label length, continually pulls the label web from the reel. The label web guider, which is installed as standard, is responsible for ensuring that the label web is pulled straight. In the cutting unit, the labels are precisely cut while a computer and servo-motor provide an exact cut-off point. Two narrow strips of hotmelt, which are applied by a heated glue roller to the leading and trailing label edges, glue the labels together. This method minimises glue consumption. Container tables for the machine also come in variations that are adaptable to round and specially shaped containers, as well as special decorations.

Mettler-Toledo’s ASN 9000 metal detection system utilises the company’s Safeline’s Profile search head technology and incorporates multi-, ultrahigh and tuned frequency technology to deliver the high level of detection capability that can ensure optimum inspection of wet and dry products. The machine incorporates a powerful electromagnet in the search head, increasing the sensitivity of the metal detector by utilising a technique that increases the amount of power delivered to the electromagnet and amplify signal reception. The software of the machine features a single pass automatic setup routine, as well as an automatic product clustering feature, which organises preset product memories according to moisture content, allowing different products to be inspected with the same machine on a single setting without compromising detection capability. The company’s Series 800 and Series 1200 automatic conveyor systems can be fitted to the machine if necessary.
