hailand’s National Food Institute (NFI) has projected food exports from the country to expand by 6.2 percent to 970 billion baht (US$29.89 billion) in value this year. According to NFI, the increase can be attributed to the improving global economy, with the International Monetar y Fund projecting global economic growth forecast for the year to be 3.6 percent, and the weakened Thai baht, which remains at an average of 31.34 baht per US dollar. Despite slowing domestic consumption as a result of political conflicts, the country’s food exports still have a bright outlook thanks to the expanding ASEAN economy. Businesses in Thailand and within the region are actively exploring innovations to move forward with higher value added products and a greater variety of products and packaging. “The food and drink manufacturing

industries are pillar economies in Thailand and continue to grow at strong growth rates,” says Justin Pau, GM of Bangkok Exhibition Services (BES). “Pharmaceutical manufacturing is also growing well. Even with the ongoing political situation, Thailand’s economy remains robust and continues to grow. Food exports are up by approximately six percent this year.” Against this backdrop, ProPak Asia, an international food, drink and pharmaceutical processing, filling and packaging technology exhibition, returns for its 22nd edition from June 11-14, 2014, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm daily. Over the years, the event has grown from strength to strength, expanding in size (five percent larger compared to last year), as well as the product innovations on display at the show. This year, the show is expected to attract over 1,800 exhibitors from over 45 countries, including 14 national pavilions

from 11 different countries and regions, such as China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, the UK and the US. Visitors will have a selection of over 4,500 machines from across the world. ProPak Asia 2014 features six zones to make it easier for suppliers and buyers to meet and make business. The Way Forward

Welcome message from Nopparat Maythaveekulchai, President, Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau

O

n behalf of Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), I would like to express my congratulations to Bangkok Exhibition Services (BES), the organiser of ProPak Asia 2014, on its remarkable achievement. I would also like to welcome everyone to ProPak Asia 2014, the largest international processing, filling and packaging technology trade show in Asia. TCEB, as a government agency working under the supervision of the Prime Minister’s Office, plans to continue helping in the development of the Thai MICE industry according to government policies. An effort is made to help Thailand’s MICE industry to compete efficiently and effectively in an international arena where the exhibitions have played the vital role in a country’s economy and industry’s development. I am confident that as the market strengthens, the development of our infrastructure, transportation systems, and MICE professionals will grow to increase our country’s competitiveness in the future. In 2013, Thailand’s MICE industry exceeded target numbers for both visitors and revenues. The Kingdom welcomed a total of 1,013,502 MICE travellers from abroad—and registered a total income of 88.485 billion baht. The TCEB’s strategic plan for MICE in 2014 has the goal of penetrating new markets, raising the overall

quality of MICE, and making Thailand the destination of choice for international conferences in Asia. TCEB’s 2014 MICE strategy will play an important role in attracting visitors in order to achieve our target of 987,000 travellers, and 96.9 billion baht in revenue. Essentially, the program will help drive the expansion of MICE related business and help make Thailand the destination of choice for the world’s MICE industry in the near future ProPak Asia has been prominently recognised as Asia’s most significant trade fair for the processing, filling and packaging technology industry. Throughout the accumulative experience of organising this professional business platform for 22 years, ProPak Asia has created a high volume of trade through the information generated and business contacts made at the show, and has also developed and advanced consistently. With these reasons, TCEB is, therefore, confident that this year’s event has now become a significantly ideal platform for international manufacturers and suppliers of machinery, technology and materials for packaging, filling and processing in Asia, and is very proud to lend our full support and backing to this premier regional packaging exhibition. I would like to express my sincere gratitude again, to the organiser BES for its professionalism and great contribution in bringing together ProPak Asia 2014

V is ideal for high purity water applications as it eliminates all known pathogenic and spoilage microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, yeasts and moulds (and their spores). Simple to use, it is also a low maintenance, chemical-free and environmentally friendly technology. All Hanovia UV systems provide real-time UV monitoring (automatically adjusting itself depending on water quality) and validated UV dose calculations, ensuring maximum biosecurity and maximum peace of mind. The company’s next-generation PQ range provides process security, with performance validation from a third party. “For manufacturers seeking to improve the quality of the end product and to ensure the bio-security of their process, UV is an economic, realistic option,” says Xu Ying, the company’s Asia Pacific sales manager. “It is already an established method of disinfecting drinking water throughout the world, and is already widely used for high purity applications such as food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical processing.” “By working with our local partner Repassa, we have already provided many successful installations across Southeast Asia with excellent feedback from the endusers.” She added that in Thailand, a number of high profile customers from the brewery, dairy and pharmaceutical industries, as well as five star hotels, are already adopting the UV systems. “We are seeing demand for UV technology wherever water quality is essential.”

he packaging market for beverages experienced many changes and challenges during the last couple of years, and so did the market for still water. Well known in many regions in the world is the so called 30/25 closure, which is a 30 mm closure suiting a 30/25 mm PET neck. The closure/neck combination has been in use globally for many years. With increasing pressure to reduce costs and improve the carbon footprint, Bericap has developed a lighter weight closure called HexaLite for its customers. The 29/11 fitting is suitable for the 29/25 mm neck size. Compared to the 30/25 neck and closure combination, the light-weight option offers up to 33 percent in weight reduction. The 11 mm long product provides significant cost saving and carbon footprint reduction. In addition, a 29/13 option has been developed to fit the 29/25 neck and offers better grip with its height of 13 mm. Similarly, the 26/13 closure is designed to provide high closure for a light-weight 26 mm neck. Both the 29/13 and 26/13 closures are equipped with a slit flexband that supports easy application and reliable tamper evident functionality. Nitrogen dosing is possible for bottles that need to be stabilised with nitrogen. The 29/25 and 26/22 neck types are standard necks approved by CETIE. BERICAP

ulk food, chemical and plastic industry manufacturers who need to verify package weight and ensure products are free from metal contamination can now get both inspection technologies in one compact system. Mettler-Toledo Garvens has designed the XE100 CC Compact, the first product inspection machine that integrates checkweighing and metal detection technologies using a single short conveyor with the company’s patented metal inspection technology. The machine enables manufacturers to meet regulatory compliance with weight specifications and, at the same time, uphold their brand reputation by guaranteeing that products are free from foreign metal contaminants. Designed to accommodate large products and bulk items, the machine can inspect up to 80 products per minute, ranging in sizes up to 60 kg per package. The space-saving system can be easily integrated into production lines and offers a user-friendly, intuitive interface that requires minimal training to operate. Highly accurate load cell technology guarantees precise, consistent weighing. When over- or underweight products are detected, the conveyor automatically stops and an alarm is sounded, allowing operators to remove it from the line. This ensures manufacturers avoid costly fines for non-compliance with metrology standards.

In addition, the optional feedback control alerts the filling machines to adverse portion trends, to reduce product give-away caused by over-filling. The system offers a sensitive metal detection technology with a small metal free zone of 150 mm for non-movable parts and 300 mm at movable parts. By identifying foreign metal contaminants, the system significantly helps prevent product recalls and potential threats to public safety, ensuring brand integrity.

The product inspection system is easy to clean and maintain, reducing downtime and offering manufacturers greater flexibility and efficiency. Its innovative conveyor belt design is outfitted with a quick release mechanism, allowing manufacturers to replace the conveyor belt quickly without the need to dismantle or remove mechanical parts. SHOW DAILY • Take public transportation if you can The skytrain (BTS), subway (MRT) and airport rail link are all operating as per normal until 11 pm. Roads remain open but public transportation, rather than taxis, are recommended especially in the downtown area. • Avoid large gatherings Political gatherings of more than five people have been banned. To prevent any implications, large gatherings as well as protest sites and their vicinity should be avoided. This includes Victory Monument, the BACC at Pathumwan and Thammasat University. • Business as usual For the most part, life in Bangkok remains the same. Businesses, offices, schools, roads and public transport all remain open. Hotels have been unaffected. Tourist attractions, in addition to government offices, shopping malls and market, are all open as normal.

Bangkok Watch What should you be aware of with the current political situation in Thailand?

O

n May 22, 2014, the Chief of the Royal Thai Army announced that the military has taken control of government and put in place a martial law to ensure the safety of Thailand and its visitors. This includes a nationwide curfew from 12 midnight to 4 am (with the exception of Pattaya, Koh Samui and Phuket, where the curfew has been completely lifted). The safety of all exhibitors and visitors is the utmost priority and the situation is being monitored closely. In the meantime, here’s what you need to know.

• The curfew does not apply to those travelling to/ from the airport Travellers are advised to keep their passports and other travel documents handy at all times, in case they are required for inspection by security officers. Cabs are available, but allocate extra time for travelling due to traffic and security-related roadblocks, particularly so if you are travelling at night. The shuttle bus service between Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang International Airports is also operating as per normal.
