he Thai Star Packaging Award returns this year with its 36th edition and continues to support local designers by giving them a platform to showcase their abilities. With its theme of ‘Environmentally Friendly Packaging’, this year’s competition took on a multi-faceted approach. Divided into two categories, the entries were judged either for its effect on marketing and increasing sales, or for its practicality and role in facilitating transportation. There were a total of 547 entries, all of which could be further categorised as packaging for One Tambon One Product (OTOP) items or for normal products. Under the OTOP category for ease of transportation, packaged wooden utensils ‘Cook Count’ won the first prize. The utensils were packed securely in an

attractive box made from a single piece of paper, which could also be opened up and displayed immediately as a point-of-sales. In the meantime, there were two entries that shared the second prize under the transportation category. The first went to ‘Zenze’, which showcased packaging for sake bottles and glasses that boasts of a compact design. Also made from just one piece of paper, the package was designed to lock the glasses in place, and is suitable for immediate display as well. The other winner of the second prize is ‘Narisara Ceramic Thai’, whose design keeps the product safe during transportation without compromising on aesthetics. It achieved this by using a concept inspired by stairs, where layers were used to hold the products in place.

Under the marketing category, ‘Pratumtip’ won the first prize with its flower inspired package that opened up to reveal an aromatic candle surrounded by dried perfumed flowers. Meanwhile, the second prize went to ‘Elephant Ceramic’—a product that value added simple ceramic glasses with a unique and iconic elephant design. Last but not least, the third prize was won by ‘Thai Fish Curry Paste’, where individual packs of curry paste made from fish were housed in fishshaped packages. Not only is this a nod to the origins of the paste, it also highlights the provenance of the product by using the art of Southern Thailand— where the paste comes from—for the graphic of the fish packaging.

The Light Of Confined Spaces

aumer’s O300 and O500 optical sensors are expansions to the company’s NextGen series with increased excess gain for reliable operation under demanding conditions and high MTTF values. The miniature O300 is especially suitable for systems with very limited space, while the O500 distinguishes itself in applications that require a greater range. Compared to their sizes, the sensors provide large sensing distance and range. With the O300, the company is targeting the market for one-inch sizes. This size has become a standard used in a wide range of industries worldwide. For such applications, the sensor offers a range of services. On the

other hand, its insensitivity to ambient light allows the sensor to function under difficult lighting conditions. Furthermore, the company’s Opto-ASIC provides colour independent detection of objects. The sensor is also easy to assemble. The light beam is already aligned with the mounting holes, reducing the adjustment required to the minimum and saving on installation costs. The pressed metal sleeve ensures a robust and reliable installation. The sensor has a long service life with its completely sealed and stable housing. Another factor that contributes to the sensor’s longevity is the contactless teach-in method. A conventional

Feeding The World Through Science

S

peaking at the opening ceremony of ProPak Asia 2014, Darunee Edwards, president of FoSTAT, highlighted the importance of science and technology for the food industry. “Food science and technology has a vital and increasingly important role to play as the global human population is predicted to continue to grow rapidly for the next 40 years before stabilising at the minimum

mechanical pressure switch with moving parts is usually used, which in the long term can suffer from wear and tear and problems with leaks. With qTeach facility, contacting the teach surface with any ferromagnetic tool, for example a screwdriver, is enough to program the sensor. A blue LED light gives a clear visual feedback which is clearly visible from all sides. This new class of optical sensor employs three sensor principles. Firstly, the light sensor has background suppression, which guarantees reliability in detecting objects. Secondly, the retro-reflective sensor works reliably, even with reflective surfaces. It is characterised by a long service life due to its increased resistance to dirt. Finally, SmartReflect, a technology developed by the company, provides a light barrier that works without any separate reflector. With this technology, downtime due to a defective or dirty reflector can be minimised. The light beam is closed via a random part of the machine. The sensor switches when an object is physically interrupting the light beam. Forgoing a reflector eliminates effort and costs entailed by reflector installation, commissioning, adjustment and cleaning, which would otherwise be necessary. The sensor is therefore perfectly suited for applications in the filling and packaging process. Furthermore, a particularly sensitive version is available for special applications in the food and beverage industry. It will capture even the slightest change in intensity to detect extremely transparent films, trays and bottles. The optical sensors also feature another key feature— qTarget. By design, light beam alignment is always the same within the series, which will ease and speed up installation. BAUMER

figure of nine billion people.” As she has aptly pointed out, “the challenge is to feed this huge population with adequate, as well as nutritious and safe, food.” That is one of the motivations behind the Food Innovation Asia Conference. Returning again this year, the conference will once again provide an opportunity for international food scientists and other relevant parties to meet and share their experiences and highlight significant developments and innovations in food science and technology with an emphasis on food product innovations. According to Mrs Edwards, this situation is further complicated by the rapidly changing lifestyles of the people through increasing urbanisation and growing affluence of the emerging middle class. “In addition to the diversity of traditional and national diets, for which Asia is famous for, there is increasing development of processed and convenience goods for domestic consumption as well as export markets,” she added. “Innovation is required to develop nutritious food with the correct balance of carotenes, protein, healthy fat, vitamins and minerals for health. This practice is essential in food processing and distribution to safeguard consumer welfare.” At the moment, many countries are working together hand in hand to tackle the problem of food losses and waste in the food supply chain. Studies have shown that 15 to 50 percent of food are lost and wasted during production. “If food science can manage the loss and turn it into new products through innovation, or through food scientists, then food loss can be minimised.” Although FoSTAT is based in Thailand, Mrs Edwards hopes that it can adopt a more international role with the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community. The Food Innovation Asia Conference will take place concurrently with ProPak Asia from June 12-13. The conference will feature a series of presentations and discussions in plenary, concurrent and poster sessions, informal gatherings, competitions and exhibitions. This year, it will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of Kasetsart University’s Food Science and Technology Faculty. At the same time, FoSTAT will also be organising the Food Innovation Contest on June 13 and the FoSTAT Nestle Quiz Bowl 2014 on June 14 to encourage and recognise young food science talents so that they can make greater contributions in the future.

Speeding Into The Future

W

ith automation taking precedence in the region, Statec Binder has developed the Principac high speed packaging machine. “This is a high speed packing machine that we introduced for all free flowing products, like sugar, rice, fertiliser and plastic pellets,” said Gerhard Steinmayr, executive manager Key-Accounts of the company. The Principac is suitable for a broad range of bulk goods, which are produced in large quantities and require appropriate packaging for their transport to traders and end-consumers. Working with pillow and gusseted bags, the machine has a compact design and is suitable for 10

to 50 kg filling weights. It has a maximum output of 2,000 bags per hour and can fill up to 33 bags per minute. Pre-fabricated bags are fed into the bag separation system, which takes the upper bag from the magazine and transfers it to the opening table in a fully centred and precise position. Magazines contain up to 800 bags each while reels have a capacity of up to 6,000. The slip-on unit then passes the bag onto the filling clamp, where the filling process is triggered. The entire circumference of the bag is pressed against the filling clamp to enable dust-free filling and displaced air is removed through integrated air ducts. After filling,

hort cycle times and setup times, high productivity and high quality with low investment costs", this is the success formula for optimal machining processes, and the philosophy behind SIKO’s Drive Line actuators. According to Jacky Tan, GM of SIKO Product Asia, the company will be showcasing its position indicator and Drive Line Series products at ProPak Asia 2014. The products come in various sizes and combinations to cater to the requirements of customers’ applications and processes. “Customer demand had resulted in a request for machine to provide quick change from one process to another in a very short time,” he says. “These products can provide a quick changeover in a packaging process, improving set up time, reducing cost and making it faster to switch from one process to another.” For example, the company's AG06 actuator allows flexible integration in machine concepts, making it accessible for both OEMs and operators. Startup is either via the drive itself or bus communication. The programming effort and setup and adjustment times are minimal, enabling fast activation. The actuator has a stainless steel hollow shaft with a diameter of 20 mm. The hardwearing, fiberglass reinforced plastic housing with smooth surface is highly resistant to acids and bases. The actuator is installed directly onto the feed axis and auxiliary axes. Mr Tan said that the company sees the potential of the Southeast Asia market, which “is still growing, especially in countries such as Thailand and Indonesia.” The company aims to create more presence, build awareness and develop a distribution network at the show. the bag is gently released and passed on to the transport system and conveyed to the closing unit, where bags are sealed or sewn shut. According to Mr Steinmayr, customers in Asia Pacific are demanding for and enquiring after fully automatic machines instead of manual ones due to a labour shortage. “From what we hear from the people here, it is not easy to find people who want to make the manual packing, so many are asking now to change to fully automatic ones,” he said. This applies across multiple product fields, be it rice, sugar, fertilisers or plastic. Such machines are especially sought after in Indonesia and demand is also gaining traction in Vietnam and Myanmar. At the same time, the company has recently unveiled a carousel type of high speed machine in Germany that is meant for flour packing, which it intends to bring to Asia. The region holds much potential for this process as “wheat flour is a very big market in Asia. In Indonesia and the Philippines, flour is very big, and for this, we have developed a new machine that is high speed,” said Mr Steinmayr. The company will start marketing the machine in Southeast Asia after it finishes an installation in South Africa that is due to be completed in August. Nonetheless, it is simply not enough to have a product that caters to industry needs. Companies need to do more, especially in the area of aftersales. Understanding the importance of good support, the company has opened an office in Thailand earlier this year for this very purpose. The office will be providing aftersales support to customers in the region, which Mr Steinmayr believes is very important, “and also something for the future.” STATEC BINDER

he filling process is an important one for manufacturers, and the rotary vacuum fillers with seamer (for tin plate containers) or capping machine (for glass containers) from Italy’s Food Machinery & Technology can provide vacuum liquid filling with total air intake. The machines are distributed in Thailand through MT Food Systems. The filling machine features a touchscreen panel with simple and user friendly operator menu, easy format change, high precision, and is easy to clean. It is suitable for products such as peeled tomatoes, tomato purees, tomato pulps, fruits, vegetables, meat, tuna fish and pet food. According to Sergio Cornali, sales representative at Food Machinery & Technology, there is no significant differences between the requirements of Thai and European customers these days. With the economy experiencing a slowdown in the Western part of world, Asia has become a promising prospect for the company. Mr Cornali has been participating at ProPak Asia for the past few years because it is an important event in the region that can provide quality customer leads. While he said it is still too early to gauge the performance this year, he has already secured a sale on the first day. “From our experience in the previous years, we know that we can get good customer feedback here and we have achieved good results before,” Chej Mektaveekul, MD of MT Food Systems, added. hether on glass, plastic or metal containers, the wrap-around label offers more space for all kinds of advertising and consumer information. Krones’ Contiroll labeller can automatically apply wrap-around labels to round, oval, rectangular, square and polygon containers. It is capable of handling low-cost label papers, as well as a wide range of firm labels. Reverse-printed transparent film labels can be processed with the same precision as coloured film labels. The system was designed as a rotary-type labelling machine and is equipped with a precise labelling station, which cuts the labels and applies them to the container. A computer-controlled feed roller and rotating cutters provide a clean and accurate cut. Depending on the label material, hotmelt or cold glue can be used as adhesives.

A variety of machine sizes and versions enable the system to handle outputs ranging from 3,000 to 72,000 containers per hour. The machine was designed ergonomically and is easy to operate and maintain. The system is a continuous-motion machine that automatically adjusts to the inflow and outflow of containers. Containers arriving on the infeed conveyor are taken up by the infeed worm, spaced to pitch so that they can then be taken up by the infeed starwheel and transferred to the container table. The container rotation begins when they are positioned between container plates and centring bells. The speed of the feed roller is adjusted to the required label length, ensuring continuous web tension. A standard threading unit ensures optimal film feed. The Break-Through In Loading

C

ama has recently launched its new Concept of Machines—the Break-Through Generation. These machines are designed with closer adoption of the six sigma philosophy and put the priority on operator safety. In addition, considerations have been given to ensure extra accessibility and sanification level. With this generation of machines, the company has completely restyled its designs. This includes the reduction of machine footprint by integrating control cabinets with electrical and pneumatic components into the machine pedestal angles. The compact machine footprint helps to minimise cabling and makes it easier to place utility devices right where they are needed. Part of this series of new machines is the Cl 175, a side loading concept that provides flexibility in terms of speed, product size and carton dimensions. The machine has been completely redesigned, both in layout and functionality. It can load flow-wraps, pouches, bags, thermoformed trays, blisters and more, into pre-glued cartons. In the first step, the materials are picked from the storage station, opened and, by a rotary unit, placed into the moving conveyor pockets. The side-loading unit loads the products into the cartons with an intermittent-continuous motion. This handling unit consists mainly of an electric axis EGC for a precise approach to intermediate positions and a pneumatic mini slide DGSL. EGC helped to reduce the mounting time by 30 percent compared to previous selfmade electrical axis. The use of both pneumatic and electrical drive technologies allows high precision to be obtained together with a high load capacity. In the next step, the cartons move towards the final closure station. It can work in continuous or intermittent mode. Finally, the cartons get onto the outfeed conveyor. CAMA GROUP

cut-off at the right position while a rotating cutter drum equipped with a separate heating unit provides an exact cut. Two narrow strips of hotmelt, applied by a heated glue roller to the leading and trailing edges, keep glue consumption to a minimum. The hotmelt strip applied to the leading label edge ensures a precise and positive transfer onto the container. As the container is rotated during label transfer, labels are applied smoothly and tightly. The hotmelt strip at the trailing edge ensures a positive bond. The labelling station of the system is controlled by a servomotor. It incorporates a label feed roller with cut-control, cutting unit, gluing station and a vacuum-assisted gripper cylinder for label transfer. Large-capacity label reels minimise the operator workload significantly. An additional labelling station can be installed for processing at higher speeds or for decorations with two labels. As part of the company’s modular component system, the labeller can also be equipped with additional labelling stations, such as the Sleevematic M, an inline machine for shrink sleeves. After the sleeves are cut, a feed applies them directly to the containers. Depending on the container shape and sleeve size, an optional positioning module moves the sleeve to the desired position. Partial sleeves will be moved to their exact position by means of lateral guides. Optional hot-air nozzles shrink and pre-position the sleeves. After that, the sleeves are shaped around the container contour in a steam or hotair tunnel. KRONES

race metals in food can provide vital nutrients. However, some contaminant metals can be dangerous to health. Being able to determine which metal and what level of metal are in food is therefore vital. Agilent Technologies’ 7900 Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS) is used for the determination of ultra-low concentrations and its 4200 Microwave Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometer (MP-AES) is used for routine metal analysis. The 7900 ICP-MS is the only ICP-MS on the market that can measure up to 20 percent total dissolved solid samples—like food—directly without dilution, while the routine 4200 MP-AES provides lowest cost per analysis using an innovative nitrogen based plasma. According to Steward Carter, the company’s spectroscopy field marketing manager, product quality and safety are critical. Therefore, the company strives to provide the systems and expertise to allow customers to determine whether their products are safe for human consumption and to test both packaging and packaged goods for contamination. “Southeast Asia is a dynamic and growing region,” he said. “We see food quality and safety as key concerns for our customers, which is why we see ProPak Asia, with its focus on food packaging, as an important event. Testing of food quality and food contamination and understanding the sources of this contamination is a key and growing concern for our customers in this region.” AGILENT TECHNOLOGIES

device, assess the predicted detection reliability and, if necessary, carry out a manual switching threshold adaptation. The W27-3 Reflex Array photoelectric sensor is designed for reliable leading edge detection of irregular shaped objects, including product with tapered edges, warped boards, and packaged product. This also includes continuous edge detection of multi-height objects, pallets and containers with holes/gaps. Any object 12 mm or larger can be detected with the sensor’s 50 mm detection height, regardless of object

properties or position within the array—including clear materials. With these applications, the sensor can displace the traditional approach of small light grids or stacked photoelectric sensors. The sensor also provides low cost area detection in a standard sensor platform. Not only is the device priced economically, but further cost savings are realised in installation and commissioning. Operating in a retroreflective mode results in only having to mount and power a single device. SICK

he manufacturing industry is on the verge of a fourth industrial revolution, driven by the rise of automation and digitally-driven processes. Also known as Industry 4.0, this new era will see the intelligent interlinking of production systems to increase efficiency, productivity and support industry growth. Recent challenges have made it necessary to pursue an agenda of increased efficiency, reduced waste and maximum output. There has been marked increase in demand for small-batch and on-demand production, which has been further impacted by the rise in eCommerce, which requires the optimisation of supply chains and elimination of error. For many decades, the philosophy of ‘lean manufacturing’ has sought to eliminate waste in supply chains, maximising quality and efficiency. Industry 4.0 is taking ‘lean’ to the next level, making it more easily achievable and more effective. In preparation for this new dawn of automation, SICK has introduced a number of flexible automation solutions for presence detection and measurement, including the ML20 markless sensor, KT5 contrast sensor and W27-3 Reflex Array compact photoelectric sensor. The ML20 uses a technology based on pattern recognition that detects the cutting position for label applications without the use of print marks or place markers. Ideal for roll-fed labelling machines, the sensor controls the label cutting process by enabling more flexibility in package designs and minimising label material waste. Used for web film control in bottling and labelling machines, the sensor combines accurate positioning with high-speed web detection. It has sensing speeds up to seven m/s and an accuracy of up to 0.6 mm. In addition, the IP 65-rated sensor improves processes when multiple film changes are required by OEMs and end users. Augmenting its existing line of technologically advanced contrast sensors, the improved KT5 offers additional user-friendly features by integrating a bar display and unique threshold adjustments. These new features enable users to easily inspect and adjust various parameters in the field. The sensor offers advanced optics, a wide variety of teach-in options and unique automatic selection of the three-color LED light source. It allows users to detect reflectivity, read the set switching threshold from the

he added. “Companies who discharge wastewater that Mr Uwe-Richter believes that the key trends in the fail to meet the regulations are increasingly being issued Southeast Asia region includes growing awareness of warnings and fines to deter such practice. Due to the need proper water treatment before disposal to municipal to treat wastewater properly, industrial manufacturers are bodies or certified third parties, an increased preference for now turning to professional water service providers for state-of-the-art water solutions, and emerging concerns edge water technologies to improve their wastewater about water quality. Pet Asept, PROPAK ASIA Show Daily, 152 x 251 mm,cutting CC-en24-AZ096_05/14 handling processes.” “These three trends are not unfounded, as water scarcity in recent times has put a strain on existing water resources,” VEOLIA Stand 4T25

major component in the food & beverage industr y (F&B), water is widely used throughout the different stages of food production. Due to the industry’s hefty water intake, millions of gallons of wastewater are produced each day, and properly treating and disposing water waste can be a challenge for some businesses. Veolia has a portfolio of three key water technologies to help F&B manufacturers mitigate their water challenges and to improve existing operational processes. The three technologies are: AnoxKaldnes Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR), Biobed Advanced Technology, and the Actiflo technology. Used to treat wastewater from different food industries, AnoxKaldnes MBBR is capable of removing up to 70 percent of chemical oxygen demand (COD) when working with very high organic loads. The technology utilises the biofilm principle, whereby an active biofilm grows on specially designed plastic carriers that feature a large protected surface area. The plastic carriers are then suspended in a reactor, creating an optimal environment for bacteria culture to degrade pollutants. Similarly, the Biobed Advanced Technology also features high COD removal efficiency due to its integration of the biothane upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) component. The technology combines both systems by complimenting the UASB with an expended granular sludge bed (EGSB). Separately, the Actiflo system is a high-rate clarification system with a small footprint that incorporates microsand to enhance the flocculation process. A reliable water solution, the system can be used for process water production, wastewater treatment, and even for reuse and recycling purposes. According to Kai Uwe-Richter, the company’s regional marketing manager, Design & Build Projects, South East Asia Industrial, the company has recently introduced a new corporate structure to unify the company’s three core business units—water, waste and energy management— under one identity to position to the company as a one-stop environmental services provider. In Southeast Asia, the company has local presence in all regions and within Asia, it has an estimated staff strength of about 1,100 employees. “Asia is a large and growing market, and this segment currently contributes to about 11 percent of Veolia’s overall revenue,” he said. “Southeast Asia also contributes to a large percentage of our key references—a good example is Veolia’s Actiflo system, for which we now have over 900 references. Coupled with fast growing markets in this region, there are many reasons why it is impossible for Veolia to ignore the importance of the Southeast Asia market.”

Making A Strong Case

W

ell-designed product handling systems are key to reliability of the overall solution and to maintain the aesthetic appeal of products. Production lines today demand high efficiencies. Based on the V-graph line design, the end of line systems have to operate at a higher capacity and efficiency to prevent downtime of upstream equipment. Keeping this in mind, Clearpack has designed its machines based on three core principles: safety and reliability, simplicity, and flexibility. The company’s Model 112 case erector has a robust body and reliable case forming mechanism that allows it to produce up to 15 cases per minute. The machine adopts the features of high speed case erectors into a compact and versatile unit to meet the requirements of demanding production environments. On the other hand, the Model Pro-Forma 330 case erector is a heavy duty machine with a continuous motion drive that performs case forming and sealing operations at speeds of up to 35 cases per minute. Using PLC electronics to control the operations and document the performance of the machine, the case erector is also operator friendly with touch screen controls. During the case erection process, the indexing system will provide reliable and accurate case feed. The vacuum pull-down releases each case individually from the stack.

Once released, the case is smoothly indexed to the opening station by mechanical slide bar transfer. Dual spring-loaded grippers will self-adjust to accommodate poor corrugated and uneven case stacks. Two bellows-style grippers hold the case firmly from below as the grippers on the cam-operated opening arm pull the case open. The dual grippers over-open the outer flaps slightly to ensure smooth inner flap closing. A case open sensor monitors proper case opening. The case erectors are designed to run a variety of sizes. The machines can be quickly set up to run different case sizes using quick adjustment points and levers to ensure that the production line can be running within minutes. As the outer flaps are closed, a steel tongue slides in the flap gap to prevent flap overlap. Cases are squared by upper and lower motorised roller supported transfer belt as the tape is applied. Cases that exit from the case erectors are sealed, squared and ready for case packing. The machines can be linked with different case packer and sealer options to form a complete case packaging line.

Expanding With Air

Flushing Without Compromise

B

ßhler’s AeroExpander is a solution applied in the processing of snack food pellets and third generation snacks. Using hot air instead of oil for expansion, snack food processors are able to reduce cost while providing a healthier snack alternative. The machine employs air circulation and variable temperature control with a custom conveying system to ensure precise dwell time and product uniformity. This control benefits customers by boosting productivity and maintaining consistent quality in the demanding snack food market. The system expands the pelleted snack product during a continuous conveying process. The unit provides a high rate of thermal transfer and precise control of expansion, bulk density, colour and texture. A specialised air delivery system with dual plenum design means expansion of 100 percent of the product is achievable. The compartmentalised conveyor bed offers first-in/first out product tracking for consistent and efficiently controlled expansion. The machine's controlled internal conveying and air delivery systems ensure precise dwell times for all pellets while employing air and heat wisely. Recirculation of process air is an energy-efficient means of expanding snack food pellets. In addition, the elimination of the frying process in snack production reduces oil usage by 50 to 75 percent, resulting in tremendous cost savings. These features combine to reduce operating costs, while satisfying increased demand for healthier, reduced fat snacks. The three available sizes of the machine can easily fit in existing or new plant layouts. The unit's modular design and installation package lead to quick installation and minimal set-up to begin operations. The smooth inner surfaces make sanitation easier, reducing clean-up and maintenance times in the process. BUHLER AEROGLIDE

leaning-in-place (CIP) allows hygienic cleaning between process runs, through the circulation of liquid cleaning solutions, without dismantling the system and its component parts. Reliable cleaning of process equipment is a necessity for maintaining high product quality and maximising plant output. The cleaning program has to be flexible enough to facilitate multiple cleaning applications. The INTE-FLUSH-S CIP unit from Integra is a pre-assembled skid mounted unit, pre-piped, pre-wired and ready for hookup of steam, water, air, electricity, concentrated chemical and sanitary piping. All parameters that affect cleaning, such as flow rate, temperature, concentration of detergent and time, are automatically controlled. The unit is suitable for applications within the food, dairy, beverage, pharmaceutical, biotechnological, cosmetic and fine chemical industries. Typical applications are the cleaning of storage tanks and process vessels, pipelines, filling and packaging machines, heat exchangers and all kinds of other in-line process equipment. The CIP unit function automatically during the entire cleaning cycle. The CIP upgrading program monitors filling of the CIP tanks, heating of tank content and dosing of detergent to obtain the right concentration before starting a cleaning cycle. A conductivity sensor controls the concentration of detergent and detects the phase transition water/detergent. The flow detection indicates when an object is empty and offers a control on the return of cleaning liquid from the object in cleaning. The relevant parameters are displayed and can be adjusted from the operator panel. The control panel contains a PLC and a touchscreen operator interface which can control a maximum of 32 cleaning routes with 16 different cleaning programs. INTEGRA Stand 2K39

premium event created for senior managers in the beverage manufacturing industry, the one-day conference will continue to fuel business exchanges and knowledge transfers with its comprehensive programme. Featuring a combined morning program and two

parallel afternoon tracks, speakers from Canadean and Mintel, among others, will be sharing the latest beverage trends in Asia, innovations in packaging and their strategies for moving ahead in the drinks industry within the region. Asia is undergoing a period of great transformation as populations change and markets develop. With the ASEAN Economic Community taking place in 2015, Suphasan Hongladarom, purchasing manager at Sermsuk and a representative of the Thai Beverage Industry Association (TBA) will be talking on how the Thai beverage industry can prepare itself. In the meantime, Zaw Min Win, chairman of the Myanmar Food Processors & Exporters Association, will share his insights on how to overcome the challenges of entering Myanmar—one of the most talked about markets in the region. Richard Denton, head of Technical, Asia Pacific Supply, Diageo, will also be talking about how increasing urbanisation and the growing middle class have presented opportunities for premiumisation in Asia, while Karen Stanton, Regional Marketing, Sensory and Consumer Insights director, Greater Asia, International Flavors and Fragrances (IFF) will be exploring the innovation and future of the beverage market from an ingredient perspective. Technology leaders in the drinks industry, such as Krones, KHS, Sidel, GEA, Bericap and Lanxess, will also be helping participants keep track of the latest technological innovations available in the market.

performance and smoothly distributes goods to minimise losses and breakages. Particularly suited for heavy coated products, as seasoning does not build up on the pans, the conveyor has an easy-to-clean design to ensure that manufacturers comply with strict HACCP and QA standards, while delivering quality products and reducing waste. Mr Webster said that the Southeast Asia market is key for the company and that the company will soon be announcing the opening of a new branch office in Asia, which will include sales, technical service, project management and administration to better support the company’s customers throughout the region. According to him, the strongest trend by far is towards healthier snacks, for example, either baked (not fried) chips or sunflower oil fried chips. “Palm oil is commonly used for frying due to its low cost and wide availability. However, sunflower oil is considered to contain less cholesterol, and therefore, more beneficial,” he added. “This move towards healthier snacking means consumers expect each potato chip to contain less than 35 percent oil after frying. Plus, snack biscuits and snack cereals seems to be gaining popularity.” “Parents are replacing potato chips and pellet fried snacks in their children’s school bags with biscuits and cereal—a significant shift in eating behaviours. Plus, snack manufacturers are becoming more innovative when exploring non-traditional snacks—with the latest trend being baked rice (white and brown) snacks. The Asian taste palate is also very selective and differs from country to country, but seasoning is also one of the most expensive materials in the production line.” TNA

arkets in Southeast Asia are developing increasingly along with globalisation and urbanisation. According to Orawan Kongsomboon, GM of Thailand & Vietnam at Mettler Toledo, this has led to a greater call for automation and a larger focus on hygiene. Introducing the X-grader as one of the highlights, she explains how the grading machine used for portioning meat and poultry can help customers save on time and manpower. The traditional way involves the use of a small scale to manually portion the products, but “instead of needing eight or twelve people, now you just need one person to put the product on the conveyor and it will grade by itself,” she said. At the same time, companies in Asia are also looking to meet stricter standards as globalisation enhances inter-country trade. Using the example of Vietnam and Thailand, she explained that Vietnam is still in the beginning stages of understanding hygiene and standards as domestic trade takes up about 50 percent of its market. On the other hand, “Thailand is familiar with regulations because they deal with a lot of exports.” Companies in Thailand take hygiene very seriously as they have to meet the requirements of countries like Europe and the US. Product innovation and design are therefore geared towards this demand. For instance, food producers often have to put their machines through harsh washing for food safety purposes. As a result, the company used aluminium to reach an IP65 level of protection for their machines, so that water will not go in. “That would help customers to clean up their lines and at the same time, the machine won’t be out of order,” said Ms Kongsomboon. ognex’s In-Sight 7000 vision systems offer integrated, field-replaceable lighting with five different colour options (red, blue, green, white and infrared), giving customers the flexibility to support many vision applications. Unlike most vision systems, the vision system has the capability to power and control external lighting directly, which eliminates the need for external power supplies that occupy valuable machine space. In addition, integrated fieldreplaceable lenses allow customers to further customise the vision system for specific applications. The system is equipped with EasyBuilder user interface for quick and easy application setup without any need for programming knowledge. The interface ensures that all inspection, defect detection, guidance, alignment and measurement applications are easy to set up and deploy. The company’s Connect suite offers a wide range of built-in communication protocols that interface directly with the visions system. The compact vision system also features built-in Ethernet, RS-232 serial and multiple discrete I/Os. The system can deliver high acquisition speeds of over 100 frames per second, ensuring 100 percent automated inspection of products even on fast bottling and pharmaceutical production lines. It also comes with VisionView visualisation accessories for monitoring and controlling vision systems on the factory floor, allowing customised visualisation and control to be integrated into third party HMI systems and custom-built standalone applications.
