he ThaiStar Packaging Awards Ceremony w a s held l a st n ight at ProPa k A sia , recognising innovative packaging designs created by local talents. The ThaiStar Awards is the honour award by the Department of Industrial Promotion (DIP), Ministry of Industry, in collaboration with leading private packaging organisations. The award has been held annually since 1977 and winners of each category will represent Thailand in the AsiaStar Awards organised annually by the Asian Packaging Federation (APF) in partnership with 16 Asian nations. Of the four different awards categories, the Awards for Prototype of Transportation Packaging and Awards for Prototype of Consumer Packaging are opened to
both public and students. In first place for the transportation packaging category for students was Jarong, the ceramic bowl set which won the top prize. It won over the judges with its simple, yet practical, white colour design that brought out the colours of the ceramic products it contains. In addition, the packaging also features graphic arts of the bowls. The first runner-up went to Hachi Tool Box, a tool packaging that mimics the shape of a conventional tool box. Besides being lightweight, consumers can also use the cardboard box as a real toolbox that keeps all the tools inside held securely in place. Amuse was named the second runner-up. The packaging for colouring materials comes with a palette

As for the consumer packaging category for students, the top prize went to Assawa Thai Chess. To overcome the perception that traditional Thai chess is a game for the elderly, the designer injected more fun into the game through a packaging design to attract the attentions of teenagers. The first runner-up was awarded to Resin Doll, a packaging that provides an interesting backdrop for the dolls to give them more personality. The second runner-up went to Punhom, which means sharing fragrances in Thai. The aroma soap packaging is assembled like a basket and the paper used can help retained the aroma inside.

This machine is designed for quick installation and set-up because you don’t have separate components to connect. The fully integrated machine (plumbed and wired) will be shipped as a single unit in a standard intermodal container. Since no equipment is in contact with the floor, the interior layout of the machine makes an easy clean-up. Continuous weld prevents product building up underneath floor structure. HazLoc construction for Dust Explosion Hazard Environments (including FANUC America paint mate robot) is also available as an option.

“I think the producers from Thailand in the food sector have already started exporting to Europe, so they would need machinery for packaging and labelling,” he added, explaining why ProPak Asia was important to Germany and the Bavarian pavilion he represents. Among these, are frequent participators like Schwarz Druck and Sesotec. Though they might already be successful in Thailand, the pavilion provides additional support for these companies in terms of finance and opportunities. There are also two companies participating in ProPak Asia for the first time. They are PreSens Precision Sensing, a company involved in producing sensor systems, and Iwis Antriebssysteme GmbH, that specialises in producing chains for motion control fit for different industrial purposes. “With surrounding countries participating in the show, and Thailand now becoming one of the action centres for Southeast Asia, I would say ProPak is the most important show for processing and packaging right now,” he commented.

he UK is by no means a new countr y expanding into Thailand. In fact, many British businesses have long since established themselves in the country and the region to date. However, there are still more that are just waiting for the right time to showcase themselves and find new customers or partners in the country or the region through shows like ProPak Asia.
5
The UK pavilion houses seven companies at the show this year, including newcomers Bradman Lake Group and Freemantle, who are looking to sell here, or find local partners, agents and distributors. “So it’s not just about the customers, but also local Thai people to help our members,” Andrew Stark, chief operating officer of the Processing & Packaging Machinery Association (PPMA), explained.
The association is also providing this service for other members not present at the show. “They have indicated their interest to expand here, but maybe it’s just not the right time now because business in the UK is doing good, and there’s limited space at the show,” he elaborated. The challenge for many wishing to showcase themselves at ProPak Asia is getting more space, he notes. “It’s nice for the organisers, but the show is proving very popular. There are only seven companies with us here at the pavilion, but there are two or three times that number of companies, 39 in fact, who already have their own agents at the show, so there are lots of British businesses who are out there. They’re on their Thai partner’s stand, or if they have a partner in Asia, then they’re on their stand,” he said. ProPak Asia has indeed been gaining more popularity every year, increasing not only in number of exhibitors, but also number of visitors. Companies from Western countries especially, increasingly rely on the show as a source for contacts and as a beginning of their Asian footprints. “This show is really important to us (UK) because it’s a fantastic springboard to get into the Asian markets, particularly Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia,” Mr Stark said. “It’s just a great foothold into this market. Indonesia is an enormous market nearby, and Thailand, being a massive food producer, is a big market itself. Language is not such a problem too because many people speak English. It’s a great place to do business,” he explained.

he Italian pavilion has seen a significant growth in participation over the years, noted Gian Paolo Crasta, marketing & communications manager at Ucima. This year the Italian pavilion houses 68 companies, all involved in various sectors of the processing and packaging industry, across 300 sq m, up from 80 sq m last year. “Thailand is a very important market for Italian companies, not only because of Thailand itself—which of course is a very important market—but also for its role as a commercial hub for all ASEAN countries,” Mr Crasta said. He thinks this role will be improved further once the ASEAN free trade agreement comes along following the formation of the AEC at the end of this year. As with other countries, the booming Southeast Asian markets, especially the food and beverage industries, have piqued the interest of Italian companies to check out what is available at the show. “Half of these are new companies exhibiting for the first time at ProPak Asia,” commented Mr Crasta. “Some had previously exhibited here with their Thai distributors in previous years, but now that business is growing here in Thailand, they have decided to come here with their headquarters and their own brand,” he explained. “ The show is also the perfect occasion for established companies to meet old clients and find new ones,” he added.

ood safety incidents not only incur direct economic costs in terms of product recall, but also damage to the reputation of a brand, which unlike monetary losses, is not something that can be regained easily. With so much at stake, you would have thought that food manufacturers would be paying attention to the finest details to ensure that their entire production process is safe and free from any possible contamination. However, that is hardly the case. According to Enrico Feenstra, regional business manager EMEA, Anderol, much effort is still required to educate manufacturers about the hidden threats of their plants. In the past, manufacturers were driven away by the high costs of food grade lubricants, but the situation is no longer the same. Food grade lubrication products are now priced more competitively. The other concern was that in the early days, food grade lubricants often provided inferior performances, something that Mr Feenstra was quick to testify against. “Now, I can assure you that food grade lubricants can perform at similar levels, or even better, than non-food grade lubricants at similar price points,” he claims.
While Western countries, particularly in Europe, have embraced the ‘from cradle to grave’ philosophy in food production, the regional market has yet to understand the concept. “We are not just talking about contamination of food, but possible contamination at every point along the supply chain, from animal feed to products of the animal,” he explains. “Companies have to understand that food grade lubricants can safeguard their products and reputation.” He believes that lubricants suppliers can play a big part in the education process by engaging manufacturers, not just with the interest of selling products, but most importantly, help these companies identify malpractices and provide corresponding suggestions. Asia is a very big market for the company. With more people consuming processed foods than before, the demand for food packaging and processing machinery will continue to grow. “That is why at ProPak Asia, you see more regional manufacturers as production is going domestic.” TECSIA LUBRICANTS 4X31

or challenging inspection applications where a product is wet, hot, chilled or cooling Mettler Toledo’s Profile Advantage technology provides the ultimate in metal contaminant detection capability. A ll metal contamination including ferrous, non-ferrous and even the most difficult to detect non-magnetic stainless steels are readily detected enabling them to be removed effectively from the manufacturing process. The metal detectors utilise multi-simultaneous frequency technology and product signal suppression to deliver up to 50 percent improved sensitivity on any challenging product effect application. Natural products such as meat, poultry, dairy products and baked goods often have a high degree of moisture content that can vary significantly from one product to another. Conventional metal detector technology struggles to cope with this variation with the risk of a high false reject rate or an unacceptable reduction in online sensitivity.
Product signal suppression technology is applied to each product that it inspects, rather than simply comparing the signal from the inspected product to that of the signal captured during the auto setup mode. Differences in the product signal which could cause conventional metal detectors to trigger, are virtually eliminated, dramatically reducing false rejects while maintaining optimum sensitivity and productivity. ticks of gum remain the stars among chewing gum formats. Automatic feed systems ensure that not only sticks of gum but also tablets and dragees get to their destination—into the pack—with efficient care. The chewing gum is placed manually into a feed magazine in the form of slabs, which are individually pushed forward automatically. The slabs are then turned into individual sticks with the scoring roller and the breaking unit, after which they are automatically packaged. In addition to customary manual feeding, the slabs or chewing gum rope can be taken directly from the upstream equipment and fully automatically fed into the wrapping machine. Tablets and dragees, which are to be packed as rolls or sticks, are fed into a feed funnel either manually or automatically. The contents of the packs are grouped in the feed area before being transferred to the wrapping area of the RPM roll/stick wrapping machine, where they are checked for completeness and then packaged into rolls or sticks using one or two wrapping materials. In the process, each article is checked and any damaged products are removed. The fold wrapping of classic sticks and gum is effected in waxed paper or aluminium foil. Of course, an additional paper band can also be applied for classic sticks. As one piece of chewing gum rarely comes on its own, the next stage is the multipack. Here, the pack of chewing gum is sealed or glued along the longitudinal seam and on the ends. For the modern presentation of gum sticks in multipacks, LoeschPack offers diverse options. For example, the GW01 packages 13 to 25 individual sticks into packs which are then wrapped and sealed. Optional packaging in a cardboard band ensures greater robustness and makes the pack easier to open and close. Alternatively, for carton two-fold flap pack, between five and 18 sticks lying flat next to each other are grouped into layers in the multipack area of the GW04, then transferred for further packaging to the LTM-DUO, where it is packed into the base and upper sections of a carton, glued and then tightly sealed in a cellophane wrap. he food industr y is one of the leading industries in Thailand. In 2014, the industry grew around 13 percent from the previous year, which accounted for around one trillion baht with rice, sugar and cassava products taking the lead. Among all destination of Thai food products, ASEAN countries accounted for 22.2 percent which was much more than the volume that was exported to Japan and China (12.9 percent and 12.0 percent respectively). T he for mat ion of t he A SE A N Economic Community (AEC) at the end of this year is going to have a large impact on the Thai food industry with the number of possible buyers expected to increase
from 60 million within Thailand to 600 million from all over ASEAN. At the Food Challenges Toward AEC seminar organised by Asia Food Beverage Thailand, Dr Bhundit Innawong said that the key to create new product is to think out of the box. “The box which keeps us thinking only of the food industry when the truth is that new creation comes from a courage to think out of your comfort zone,” he adds. “In order to create a brand that will stay in consumers’ heart, marketing team needs to look beyond quality. They have to find a way to imprint their brand in consumers’ mind,” Dr Thaneth Sirikit said. According to Dr Tanit Sorat, “the advantage of Thailand is that the country is capable of producing skilled workers in food industry. Logistic is going to be a key factor if you want to expand your business to serve the AEC market. Since Thailand is aiming to become the regional logistic hub, we have to adjust ourselves and adapt, especially Halal market and also Halal logistic” “ Muslims account for a round 610 mil lion population around the world and more than half of them are in ASEAN countries. We cannot deny the fact that Asean market is the biggest market for Halal food in the world. Halal is not just about food, but it is about living. In the world, 4,019 billion US dollar of untapped Halal food market exist. We must prepare,” Mr Manat Suebsantikul urges. Featuring four topics and five experienced speakers, the seminar was attended by more than 140 delegates.

eriSens is a compact image processing system in the shape of a sensor. An image sensor, illumination (or illumination connection), optics (also changeable lenses), hardware/software, as well as Ethernet and digital interfaces, such as for PLC connection, are integrated in a compact, industry-suited housing. After a typical one-time configuration on a PC, the vision sensor is ready to perform specific tasks like a conventional sensor. The sensor can be used to perform inspection tasks and can carry out up to 32 feature checks simultaneously. It a c q u i r e s i m a g e s , e v a lu ate s t hem a nd communicates the results to the system control or to individual components in your system. Initial configuration on the PC allows users to enter image acquisition parameters, select tools for feature checks and setup the required interfaces. The vision sensor can achieve its full potential of efficiency wherever various features must be checked in parallel or part locations vary, tasks which usually are only mastered by sophisticated sensor technology. This also includes applications where a visual inspection is advisable and/or contactless checks
are required. The intelligent sensor is also good for checking (even different) batches in the line or communicating collected data. Process deviations caused by var y ing light conditions, irregularities in surface smoothness or background effects might impair image processing. The sensor acts like human beings who can still recognise trees and houses clearly by their contours even in dismal weather. The patented image processor calculates contours in real time where others discern only shades of grey. Contour-based image processing works reliably and quickly—even in difficult ambient light conditions. ABIZ TECHNOLOGY 5E29

ccording to a report published by Transparency Market Research, the bottled water market was valued at US$ 157.27 billion in 2013, and is expected to reach US$279.65 billion by 2020, growing at a CAGR of 8.7 percent from 2014 to 2020. By volume, global bottled water market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.3 percent during the forecast period to reach a market size of 465.12 billion litres by 2020. In 2013, volume of the market was 267.91 billion litres. Rising concern for health and wellness and evolution of new packaging initiatives are the major factors driving the growth of bottled water market. In addition, demand for bottled water has triggered with the increase in consumer choice availability for different flavoured and vitamin rich functional water. Innovation in the field of portability of hygienic water is also fuelling the growth of global bottled water market. Market restraints such as water contamination caused by leaching and lack of awareness regarding health hazards of low cost tap water have partially hindered the growth of global bottled water market. However, evolution of innovative and economical equipment designed for handling small bottling operations has increased the attractiveness of bottled water market among small bottlers. By product type, bottled waters are classified as still water, carbonated water, f lavoured water and functional water. By revenue, still water was the largest contributor in the global bottled water market in 2013 and accounted for a market share of 64.9 percent respectively. Carbonated bottled water is the second largest contributor in the global bottled water market in 2013 and accounted for a market share of 22.9 percent respectively. Wide acceptance of non-f lavoured and noncarbonated drinking water is the key driving force behind the largest market share of still water segment. As of 2013, market shares for flavored water and functional water were 7.1 percent and 5.1 percent.

Great Security & Safety
S
ince 2011, in the shape of its Evoguard family, Krones has been offering a complete range of valves, comprising single-seat and double-seat valves, double-seal and aseptic valves, plus sampling valves, control valves and disk
valves. The disk valves are in modularised design with a pneumatic actuator and constitute an affordable shut-off fitting for products and clean-in-place (CIP) media. The features of this range of valves include process dependability, maintenancefriendly construction, compact actuator design, certified product quality, unambiguous identification of the parts and compatibility with existing kit. Each seal position is easy to reach, making seal replacement a simple task. The good removal and installation conditions ensure fast, reproducible procedures in the maintenance programme. The high-performance actuator is welded in its entirety. This minimises the amount of maintenance required and also contributes towards enhanced occupational safety for the maintenance staff. In addition, the valves are designed according to the requirements of EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EG and Pressure Equipment Directive 97/23/EG, and have undergone pressure, safety and strength testing.

Built For Customisation
T
he Innosept Asbofill ABF (aseptic bottle filler) is designed for aseptic filling of liquid, non-carbonated, microbiologically sensitive high- and low-acid products. The nominal capacity of the machine program is approximately 12,000 bph single and 24,000 bph for twin concept machines. The machines of the series fulfil the requirement for processing different filling volumes and are available with different bottle neck options. The compact linear design of the filler machines provides aseptic safety while requiring a small aseptic zone. The result is a high degree of flexibility. The linear concept is particularly efficient when frequent format changeovers and small product batches are necessary. Bottles and caps are sterilised with peroxide condensation. The machines are capable of handling different bottle shapes and materials within the same neck diameter. The nitrogene technology implemented enables optionally low residual oxygen levels. In addition to low operating costs, the machines also help ensure resource conservation and are environmentally friendly. The fillers can be supplied with a screw capper and/or film or foil sealer as required.

Thumbs Up For Convenient Hydration
H
ydration is very important for human beings and especially in hot and humid countries. The Thumb’Up Crystal sports closure developed by Bericap will help companies attract consumers with its aesthetic appeal. The closure, which is suitable for still water, consists of two pieces. The outer shell is fully transparent and equipped with an overcap which can be opened more than 180o thanks to its ‘Galileo’ hinge. As a result, the overcap does not touch the cheeks while consumers are drinking from it. The smooth pourer part is clicked in and can be designed in different colours to attract the attention of consumers on congested product shelves. Tamper evidence is granted by a tear strip that must be removed before the overcap can be opened. In addition, there is also a tamper band on the shell. The closure is compliant with the BSDA child safety regulation and is available for PCO 1881, 26/22 and 29/25 neck types.
13 Capping It Off With Speed
C
apping is critical because it is the point at which the container, content and closure come together. In fact, product quality and overall production performance can hinge on choosing the right cap infeed solution. With storage, elevation, orientation and high speed feeding of the filler in mind, Gebo Cap Feeder has combined the four functions yet retains reliability thanks to its simple orientation principle based on gravitiy. The feeders allow for easy integration with low space requirements. The flat top air conveyor enables complex trajectories and bypassing of obstacles with no limit on distance. Adjustment of speed bump can be done without any tools and hopper replenishment is performed at chest height. The large-sized hopper is available in various formats. An ejection system checks for caps that are missing the tamperproof ring as well as upside-down caps. The automatic emptying system shortens production changeover time and allows the infeed of standard-neck and lightweight caps are placed on the same belt without any need for adjustment. An automatic, telescopic chute is used for intervention-free adaptation to all bottle formats and for greater reliability of adjustments.

The end results are improved packaging hygiene, reduced risk of crosscontamination, greater overall operating efficiency, lower energy consumption and reduced product costs. The machine offers a production capacity of 12,000-18,000 bottles per hour and can be used for PET bottled water, carbonated soft drink, juice, liquid dairy, condiment and household and personal care products. The stable infrared heating system and independent heat balance device ensure stable preform temperature, even colour of the bottle and increased output. A specially designed twice-blowing system monitors the pressure in each mould in order to provide accurate real-time information for the operator, who can then make easy adjustment to ensure proper bottle forming.
