4 Learning To Sustain Growth Last year, the Japan Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Association had an addition of 13 members, and their membership is increasing year after year. Now, they have a total of 243 companies in their association. The association has numerous ongoing projects which includes expanding their businesses not only domestically but internationally, and the focus is on the Southeast Asian region, especially Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam. The market potential in the region is growing and this translates to many opportunities in the packaging industry for the association’s members. The companies associated with the organisation are attending seminars on packaging processes here at ProPak Asia to learn the latest technology and developments in the industry. Masahiro Abe, deputy secretary-general of the association, highlighted the robotics Internet of Things as well as the artificial intelligence sectors are growing in the food packaging industry in Japan, and that this is the key to improving productivity. Many companies in Japan have already begun moving towards this as it is the future of packaging.
The association is also putting great efforts into saving food, as the global food wastage volume has been increasing and they want to work into reducing the amount by starting out with their efforts here in the region. Through implementing packaging solutions such as smaller packaging sizes, they can work towards reducing food wastage as it is becoming a real issue that all of us have to play a hand in overcoming. In Japan, the population is not only decreasing but also rapidly ageing. Therefore, this affects the market and changes it. To address these changing consumer needs, companies are implementing productivity changes in the packaging industry. The members are also striving to improve their technology to ensure that safety and hygiene are of the utmost importance when it comes to food packaging, which is key for these companies. The association also makes itself easily available to customers in Southeast Asian countries and even the United States so customers can easily rely on their products and services.
Great Networking Opportunity World Trade Centre (WTC) Taichung is a non-profit organisation and it services Taiwan’s trade industries, which also includes the food industry. The organisation supports a total of 18 companies at this year’s ProPak Asia which occupy a space of 351 sq m in the Taiwan pavilion. This year, the organisation welcomes seven new companies—which ranges from food packaging, pneumatic components to custom food labelling manufacturers. The participating companies aim to tap on the growth market in Southeast Asia through ProPak Asia and they are also looking for investment opportunities. These companies will also be attending conferences during the event to obtain the latest trends in the market—which include food labelling, packaging and food safety trends. Michelle Liao, exhibition section specialist at WTC, says the event is a great opportunity to network and
Fast And Safe Products A total of 20 new companies joined the Korea Packaging Machinery Association (KPMA) this year, a notable increase from the 15 new companies which joined last year, making a total of 130 companies now associated with KPMA. Soonwoo Hong, general manager of KPMA, highlighted the importance of food safety in manufacturing. The entire food manufacturing process needs to maintain safe standards at every process level to prevent foodborne illnesses. Food safety considerations such as the origins of food and the practices relating to food labelling, food hygiene, food additives, as well as policies and guidelines are key for the management of governmental import and export inspection and certification systems for foods. “The most important thing for the packaging machinery industry is that we can produce products fast, and do this safely,” said Mr Hong.
Increased machinery productivity in the food packaging industry is a key factor in improving processes, especially in packaging food and medicine, says Mr Hong. Companies should examine their existing workflow. The technology and processes required for production as well as the procedures, communication tools and resources available across the company should be analysed. Getting smarter machinery is also important for companies. Manufacturing is an industry in which an employee can only be as productive as their tools, and smart machinery enables companies to stay competitive in the market. Companies in Korea are not new to the term 'Industry 4.0', and the association is seeing more companies adopting Industry 4.0 practices. They understand the need to adapt to technological changes and they are responding to these changes to stay competitive.
create more contacts within the industry for Taiwan’s participating companies. Miss Liao went on to say that she hopes the country’s reputable machinery and technology in the food industry will enable the associated companies to do well in this year’s ProPak Asia. Taiwan’s total output value of the domestic food processing and ingredients in 2015 was US$21.3 billion, which makes the country’s food processing the eighth largest manufacturing sector in the country. In recent years, consumers in Taiwan and also the region have placed a greater emphasis on healthcare enhancement and convenient food which is easy to prepare. Responding to this, the nation’s food industry has also changed its development goals to provide quality health and convenience food to satisfy the domestic demands of dietary health.

Metal Detectors Enhanced
Mettler Toledo has launched a series of enhanced features for their profile metal detectors to increase manufacturers’ productivity while enhancing brand protection and improving product and process quality. The Reduced Test (RT) Mode is able to track and identify any elements that may lead to a reduction in performance. It enables a significant reduction (up to 83 percent) in the frequency of metal detector testing to ensure it is working to, or better than, the required standard. This therefore increases productivity, reduces waste and improves OEE. The Auto Test System (ATS) keeps downtime to an absolute minimum by a simple push of a button and three or four integrated metal test sample types are passed through the aperture. This enables detector testing to be repeated in exactly the same way for every test that is conducted. The eDrive technology drives greater power to the transmit coil of the metal detector, enabling it to detect significantly smaller real life metal contaminants. Delivering up to 20 percent improved sensitivity to detect more metal in high volume, dry applications, it greatly improves wire length detection capabilities, enhances product quality, increases consumer satisfaction and provides better brand protection.

12 One-stop Destination For Confectionery This is the second year in running that Theegarten has participated in ProPak Asia. A marked difference this year is that the company has partnered up with other companies—such as Euromac and Chotec, amongst others—to set up a confectionery booth which caters to all customers’ manufacturing needs in the confectionery industry. The company is a German machine manufacturer which focuses on primary packaging machinery for the confectionery segment—such as chocolate wrapping, gum wrapping, candy wrapping etc. Their machinery are sold to virtually any country in the world, which also includes Asia. The participation of the various companies in the confectionery booth aims to provide confectionery manufacturers with a one-stop shop which includes everything in the confectionery production process— from cooking, forming, all the way to packaging.
Markus Rustler, president and chief executive officer of Theegarten, also shared his view on confectionery packaging trends in Southeast Asia. As Southeast Asia is in the subtropical region where it is warm year-round, consumers want product protection, says Mr Rustler. This is in terms of the products being hermetically sealed, which protects the contained product from getting into contact with moisture, getting a better heat barrier, and prevent factors from climatic conditions to affect the product contained in the packaging. A hermetic seal is the quality of the packaging being airtight, so that no air can leave or enter the packaging. Mr Rustler is excited to welcome visitors to the confectionery booth where they hope to make new contacts with more confectionery manufacturers, especially with a designated confectionery booth with a collaboration of companies which can provide the entire confectionery manufacturing needs of their customers.
Keeping Up With Changing Demands Asia Pacific is a very important region for the Spanish companies which are participating in this exhibition, according to Rosa Meseguer, international promotion specialist at AMEC. More companies are selling their products and machinery in this region, which includes countries like Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia, as the markets in the region are continuously growing. The pavilion has six participating companies this year, with one company, TMI, being a new addition to ProPak Asia. The companies exhibiting at the show this year have included more machinery that cater to the final assembly line of the manufacturing process. Previously, it was harder for the Spanish companies to advance in this market but penetrating it is now a necessity. Aside from those in the pavilion, there are 15 or 16 other Spanish companies participating in the show as they have been in the Asia Pacific region for many
Finding The Right Solution The entire industry has changed over the years, even in as recent as the last 10 years; manufacturers today need different machine functions than they did before, says Allan Chen, director and vice general manager, Samwin, a Chinese company. They now need quality machinery (in contrast to the emphasis on quantity before) for evolving product needs such as stand up pouches for packaging, or those that contain zip locks for example, and their machinery provides these functions to meet their changing demands. If you look at the market, customers in the packaging industry can be segmented into different categories: toplevel, medium-level or smaller-level customers. For bigger companies, integrating Industry 4.0 practices (which is a growing movement in the industry today) into their processes would likely be in line with their business goals. This however does not necessarily mean that smaller companies find it difficult to digitalise and automate their processes, as they can undoubtedly do that if it fits with their business aims. Companies need to figure out where
they stand in this sector, and decide if adopting Industry 4.0 practices are right for them as some companies need ‘smarter’ machines for their businesses. Many companies are now moving forward with technology as data analysis is now important for productivity improvements. Improvements in technology have enabled modular systems to be put in place, where production is not as rigid or fixed as it was traditionally. This would also enable manufacturers to increase productivity, reduce wastage, and it is also both time and cost saving. For their machines, they are also adding in control modules to allow the capability for it to be linked to customer’s ERP systems and MES systems. This is a high-level manufacturing control system and it enables one to link data from the entire manufacturing process. Customers today are looking for simple and easy solutions and preferably where they do not have to source for different suppliers for their entire manufacturing chain, and this system is also the solution to integrating their processes.
years and are capable of exhibiting their products independently. Most of these companies are in the food packaging industry and a handful of them are in the food processing segment. There has been a shift in the packaging industry in terms of necessary features propelled by consumer demands around the world, and manufacturing companies have to adapt by using machinery which meet these needs. For example, flexible packaging in Asia has been on the rise and this is an important sector for the Spanish companies. They are not focusing only on Thailand but also other countries in the Asia Pacific region as there is a huge potential for them here, and the region is growing faster than in Europe. The packaging machinery exhibited in the pavilion are in line with the changing trends of the industry, and can also be tailored to each customer’s specific needs.
13 Saving Food With WoolCool
T
he Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP), in conjunction with the World Packaging Organisation (WPO), has established the Save Food Packaging Awards for Australia and New Zealand that recognise companies who are developing innovative and sustainable packaging that minimises food losses and food wastes, extends shelf-life, and improves the supply of food. Packaging’s role in reducing food waste is the next challenge for packaging technologies, designers and engineers. The Save Food Packaging Innovation Zone (hall 98) will give visitors an overview of the unique innovations in the market today. Winners of the 2017 Save Food Packaging Awards are also on display, featuring Sealed Air, Gourmet Garden, SPC, WoolCool and more. The Show Daily team spoke with Peter Brennan, Planet Protector (National Sales Manager) of WoolCool, to find out more about their innovative, natural insulated packaging solution for the transportation of temperature-sensitive goods.
and also dry products like vegetables, canned items, herbs and spices, and more. For the ready meal segment that has fully prepared meals in a package, WoolCool provides far better insulation than polystyrene or anything else in the market. In fact, in a crucial temperature trial test conducted by their partner HelloFresh, WoolCool kept chilled goods under five degrees (ambient temperature was 18-24 deg C) for more than 25 hours; polystyrene only made it to about 15 hours. In another test with ambient temperatures of about 40 degrees such as
here in Thailand, WoolCool proved to keep chilled goods under five degrees for more than 17 hours. WoolCool therefore allows companies in the food segment to extend their supply chain so food can now travel further and for longer, and still maintain their integrity. Potential also lies in the pharmaceutical industry that has low critical temperatures for ambient transport and the wine industry that has temperature-sensitive products. Actually, for just about any industry that ships temperature-sensitive goods, WoolCool would be an ideal insulator, concluded Mr Brennan.
50% L SS P CK G NG
About WoolCool WoolCool was invented by a packaging engineer who, being an environmentalist too, was trying to find an alternative to polystyrene to be used in food packaging that was not only as good as, but better. The idea of WoolCool came from an English neighbour of hers who was a sheep farmer, who pointed out that the many people around the world use wool as an insulator to keep homes cool in summer and warm in winter. That was the lightbulb moment. Over a period of about a year and a half, she developed a very particular blend of wool that uses sheep’s belly wool—a known waste of the clothing industry as waste wool because the fibres are too coarse and thick to use, but that has far greater insulating properties than fine wool. Exhaustive testing proved this wool performed better at insulating than polystyrene. Today the company’s partners span across the fresh food and pharmaceutical industries. WoolCool is made from 100 percent natural scoured sheep’s wool and no chemicals are used in the cleaning process. It is then needle-felted to bring all the fibres closer and tighter to give its structural integrity. This is typically cut into rectangular or square lines, and together with cardboard, they provide a great insulating packaging system.
Applications & Benefits There are numerous applications for this. For example, for meal kit delivery companies such as HelloFresh and Marley Spoon to allow consumers to quickly assemble a meal. Ingredients typically come in a box and include chilled fresh produce (e.g. meat, poultry, seafood, dairy),
IS STILL 50% TOO MUCH.

What are some of the current trends in the market with regards to packaging or packaging lines? In the past, the goal of most manufacturers was to achieve high volume performance with high efficiency. When change was required, set-up to meet the new needs generated long downtime, with the addition of another piece of equipment to the line sometimes necessary. While this increased flexibility, it came at a cost to efficiency. Today’s challenge is to combine high flexibility with efficiency and versatility in order to meet consumers’ demands for greater personalisation, which are often driven by changing purchasing habits influenced by marketing campaigns and e-commerce. In addition to the increase in product types, manufacturers are feeling the need for more stock keeping units (SKUs), such as rainbow packs, promotional packaging or smaller cases. Traditionally repacking has been the answer. This is often outsourced to contract packaging companies at different locations, leaving manufacturers with only an approximate idea of the process and the costs.
What do you think the future of the packaging industry will be like? As businesses continue to investigate ways in which Industry 4.0 can become a reality, developing technologies to address and deliver smart solutions will become more important. Such new technologies

are constantly emerging in the areas of smart systems, robotics, cobotics and big data. Motion technology, robots and cobots are already becoming increasingly popular in factories worldwide and this trend for automation is only set to continue. Automatic adjustment and feeding systems can now function as efficiently as their human counterparts, and robot technology has increased replicability and precision, and sped up production. In addition to digitising the production line, Industry 4.0 solutions are making it possible to digitise the entire value chain and make use of connectivity for production on demand. Manufacturers can now connect upstream to supply of materials and ingredients and downstream to logistics. This type of connectivity and data will enable value chains to be optimised and restructured to make it easier, faster and more efficient to get products to consumers. When the consumer needs change, the line is ready to adjust.

Industrial automation systems are capable of long hours of operation on their own, but someone must tell them exactly what to make, where, when, and how to make it. Plant manufacturing strategy defines this, plant supervisors and operators execute it, and Manufacturing Execution System (MES) software synchronises every step of the way, giving them the power to control operations, performance and quality. Unique execution and data collection capabilities on automated plant equipment make Schneider Electric’s MES solutions a choice for automated or fast moving goods manufacturing processes. The company offers a complete set of MES software functions to efficiently manage operational processes and data flow in industrial manufacturing plants. The software allows for a full electronic information and workflow management for manual job execution, as well as data download and execution on automated plant equipment through MES operations. In addition, MES performance keeps equipment operating at peak performance while MES quality is designed for quality data collection through enforcement of manual inspection procedures or direct sampling from automated plant equipment or control systems. Statistical process control provides real-time visibility into trends, variation or nonconformance to enable rapid corrective and preventive actions.
