angkok—ProPak Asia 2018 returns for its 26th installment with a continued commitment to providing the latest innovations and information in the packaging and processing industries. Throughout the last 25 years, ProPak Asia has established itself as the number one exhibition of its kind and will meet record attendance numbers, from both visitors and exhibitors, by expanding its capacity from eight halls to nine for a total area of 58,000 sq m, a 10 percent increase from last year.

Addressing Manufacturing Needs In Light Of Social Changes T he Show Daily team speaks to Masahiro Abe, deputy secretary-general of Japan Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Association (JPMA) regarding Japan’s changing social structure and its impact on the manufacturing sector.

Is JPMA unveiling any new technologies or products at ProPak Asia this year?

At ProPak Asia 2018, JPMA participates together with 12 co-exhibitors in the Japan Pavilion. We offer appropriate solutions with a variety of advanced Japanese exhibits, such as packaging machinery, inspection machinery, weighing machinery, food processing machinery, packaging materials, vacuum coolers, high-efficiency steam boilers, and so on. Above all, the following three companies have already decided to unveil their new products before the exhibition: “Checkweigher AD4961 Series” by A&D Company, Limited; “Rice Ball-Making Machine” by Fujiseiki Co., Ltd.; “DATAWEIGH EPSILON SERIES” by Yamato Scale Co., Ltd. JPMA will also be

introduced at Japan’s best exhibition—“JAPAN PACK 2019”—to be held in October 2019. JAPAN PACK is a get-together for major global industry players in the manufacturing field, and has been highly evaluated for exhibitors and visitors to obtain business-driven benefits.

What are the current trends in manufacturing?

Nowadays, Japan is faced with an ageing population and falling birth rates, which in turn affects human resources. These factors influence the country’s changing social structure. In addition, there are issues such as food loss, safety and sanitation, energy and resource saving that the market needs to address, particularly in the manufacturing field, to solve those issues. This is generating more business opportunities in Japan.

Production sites tend to require more accuracy, flexibility, productivity, and automation through total solutions in the entire factory line—from manufacturing

and packaging to distribution. In order to meet those demands for improvements, integration with robotics, Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence are regarded as key solutions. The growing Asian market will require more sophisticated solutions to improve productivity and address certain criteria of needs, in accordance with the development of social structures in the future.

Improving Efficiency In Shrink Wrapping 8

new wrapping machines from Fuji Machinery make their debut at ProPak Asia this year. Among these, of particular interest is a machine unique to the company—a side-shrink wrapping machine that is used by many ready-to-eat meal retailers to produce bento boxes, for example. These side-shrink wrapping machines reduce the amount of overall product used, enabling cost efficiency as well as reducing the impact on the environment.

Takashi Kanemori, representative of Fuji Machinery, comments: “Most machines shrink wrap the entire product, even the base. But that’s not necessary.

Wrapping is important to keep the food fresh and extend its shelf-life but only

the opening needs to be shrink-wrapped. We’ve created a machine specifically for that purpose. This also reduces the cost of shrink film usage.”

He adds: “The convenience market has picked up on these machines, thus increasing the demand for them rapidly. Wrapping machines with a high-speed in-line feeder is a popular choice among large retailers like 7-11.

“Machines that save on labour costs are popular and we see an upward trend in more manufacturers and retailers investing in our machines in order to automate their production. Premium machinery cuts down on labour operations costs as well as reduces the need for maintenance over the years.”

Inaugural Printech Asia 2018: Catching On The Ink Wave For Flexible Food Packaging B

enefits of flexible packaging has been a topic of discussion in the industry for some time— ranging from reduction in the materials used, to their environmentally-friendly properties. With the diversification of packaging shapes, sizes and materials, their converting, printing and labelling needs have correspondingly evolved.

Amidst a hike in market competition among food products with flexible packaging, businesses are increasingly relying on sensory coatings to help their products stand out from the crowd. These coatings offer special effects, providing additional visual appeal— including fluorescent, high lustre metallic, glitter, pearlescent and iridescent finishes.

Eco-friendly inks feature a high percentage of biorenewable content. When printed on a biodegradable substrate, this combination is compostable on top of being non-toxic to the aquatic environment. Inks which qualify for this category are expect to be free, or contain only trace levels of heavy metals with reduced

levels of volatile organic compounds—like aliphatic hydrocarbons, glycol ethers and acetone—that are released into the atmosphere.

What’s In Food Products—Find Out With QR Codes!

A

s processed foods become increasingly popular around the world along with consumers’ pursuit of convenience, consumption patterns have changed markedly as compared to previous decades. The longer journey of food through the supply chain to the endconsumer translates into a more convoluted route for information to reach consumers.

This generates a need for consumers to access information with regards to food production processes and distribution. Decision-making at the point-of-purchase, in the absence of further information—information asymmetry—boils down to food and beverage labels.

In an age where consumers are progressively more aware of issues related to food—such as their impacts on the economy, environment, and society, they are increasingly drawn towards products which are an expression of this relationship.

Currently, new communication systems—such as quick response (QR) mobile marketing on food labels have been used to overcome the space constraints on traditional packages and labels.

When applied to food products, this system can be a useful tool for consumers to obtain additional information—from food traceability, provenance, and manufacturing processes to the producer’s background, breeding and/or cultivations techniques involved.

Moreover, the additional information platform

also enables companies to suggest alternative ways to use and store the products—such as ways to reuse or recycle their packaging.

“Seven seconds is all you have”, says the marketing slogan—to grab a customer’s attention among a competitive series of products on the retail shelf.

With studies being conducted where consumers are profiled and categorised according to their individual purchasing behaviours, manufacturers are required to step up their effort in winning over consumer trust to ensure brand sustainability.

Theegarten-Pactec Showcases Smart Packaging To Optimise Efficiency T

he ProPak Show Daily Team speaks to TheegartenPactec, manufacturer of packaging machines, about their participation this year.

Are there any new packaging trends to look out for?

The trends that we recognise are efficiency, flexibility/ seasonal production, adaptability and product safety.

Efficiency is something we have been working on for a long time and a characteristic that our customers really respond to. We always want to provide machinery that give customers a quick return on their investment. In terms of flexibility, life cycles of products are much shorter nowadays, which means machines need to be able to adapt quickly to produce, say, chocolate products in Top Twist for two or three months and then in Double Twist wrapping style for the next months.

Our machines have that capability, even for seasonal production.

Finally, product safety has become increasingly important for clients. Regions like South East Asia are subjected to demanding climatic conditions. That is why protective packaging is continually gaining importance here: this means packaging which not only looks nice but, for instance, also seals the product hermetically and thereby protects it optimally. This type of packaging is particularly important in regions of the world where heat, humidity or insect infestation prevail, such as in countries of the tropical climate zone. This is why we are currently working on being able to offer other attractive types of packaging with these protective properties, besides the pillow pack.

What is smart packaging and why should manufacturers invest in it?

Fair Weather Forecast For The Manufacturing Industry T

he ProPak Asia Show Daily team speaks to Douglas Foo, president of Singapore Manufacturing Federation, regarding his thoughts on the direction of the manufacturing industry in APAC.

What’s new in manufacturing automation?

Customised automation solutions are becoming more widely adopted in various industries these days. New tools that allow companies to position themselves in the digital world are being used. For example, in the past, traditional manufacturing would need to produce a batch of a product in order to test it. However, through simulations, manufacturers are now able to cut back on production costs and test a product digitally. “Cost savings” and “efficiency” are the new buzzwords these days.

What does SMF hope to gain at ProPak Asia this year?

SMF hopes to be at the forefront of the future of manufacturing. What that entails is getting a foothold in the digital arena and adapting to new technologies, such as robotics and artificial intelligence, which have gained momentum in the industry. We wish to emphasise how companies can use digitisation and the total technology platform to achieve internationalisation, thus growing their business on a much wider scale. ProPak Asia is one good platform to facilitate such growth.

Have there been any noteworthy changes in the manufacturing industry in recent years?

The economic winds are now in our favour. As economic ties strengthen among different states in Asia Pacific, the region is slowly developing as a manufacturing hub. For example, did you know that manufacturing accounts for 20 percent of Singapore’s GDP (according to the Committee on the Future Economy)? A review on Quarter 1 of Singapore’s GDP also indicates that manufacturing is growing.

In comparison to the West, do you think Asia is lagging behind in adopting automation solutions in manufacturing?

The Economic Development Board’s launch on the Singapore Smart Industry Readiness Index for Industry 4.0 indicates that some Western economies are still exploring how to operationalise and optimise Industry 4.0. In Singapore, other statistics have shown that only 32 percent of companies have actually implemented machine learning in their businesses, as compared to 59 percent in Australia. Some statistics also show that MNCs are already taking advantage of this movement, but it is the group of smaller players—the SMEs—that have yet to embark on this digital journey. This is

because automation is not simply a solution; it is also an effective business model. By adopting digital solutions, a business has to rethink its entire business model more thoroughly.

In the digital age, manufacturing businesses have to reposition themselves effectively in order to reap the benefits of automation.
