Innovations With High-Performance Plastics For Movement Applications
T
he Show Daily Team speaks to Phot Techaprecharnon, Sales director, igus, regarding the company’s participation at ProPak Asia.
What sets igus’ products apart from others in the market? The igus motto has been "plastics for longer life". By this, we mean the production of innovative plastic products which reduce maintenance work, achieve technical improvements—at the same time, they reduce costs and increase service life, ensuring that everything is delivered immediately from stock. At ProPak Asia, we will show you practical examples which prove just that: it is possible to improve technology and reduce costs.
Are there any innovative products that you’re excited about? The drylin toothed belt axes in the ZLW series are suitable for many different positioning and adjustment
tasks. The self-lubricating drylin W profile guide acts as a linear guide and a toothed belt acts as a drive. The stroke is individually selectable. Thanks to the lightweight design using plastic and aluminum, drylin ZLW toothed belt axes have a low mass inertia, making them highly efficient. Whether used for an individual system or a linear robot, the ZLW series offers the ideal solution in both confined spaces and applications that require a high level of torque support. All drylin ZLW toothed belt axes can be ordered ready for installation and configured with drylin E stepper and DC motors.
What challenges do you foresee in the uptake of this product? The product range of lubrication-free drylin linear guides is based on the principle of "gliding instead of rolling". In combination with corrosion-free materials, tribooptimised iglidur high performance polymers are used
as a sliding surface. Drylin linear guides traverse in dry operation and are thereby maintenance-free and insensitive to influences such as dirt, water, chemicals, heat or impact. In addition, they make very little noise because of the materials used and the special design. With these properties, drylin linear guides can be used in a wide variety of environments, including extreme ones. The modular system allows for high flexibility with different rail guides and pillow blocks.

Tech-Savvy Asian Manufacturers Adopt Automation Solutions
T
he Show Daily team speaks to Alvin Lee, Technical Sales Manager of SPX Flow about the trends he has observed in the region as well as new products the company is launching.
enables us to source materials that are suitably priced. Further, by having one large central facility instead of many micro facilities, we are able to keep operating costs low.
As a global firm, what are some of the current regional trends that you have observed in the Asia Pacific food sector?
Are there some products and/or services that SPX Flow would like to highlight at ProPak Asia?
We have observed that manufacturers have become increasingly concerned about automation—being more tech-savvy now than previously. Automationwise, although there are many countries that offer lower labour costs, manufacturers are still opting to adopt automation in their operations. This is due to its reliability—automation offers good returns with lower risks as compared to human resources. Another trend that I note is that among equipment manufacturers, many new launches have increased competition around the region. My advice to buyers is to analyse which automation provider best suits their requirements, based on their specifications and budget, before making purchase decisions. Moreover, in this market and climate, to stay competitive, we have to make sure that our manufacturing facility is able to keep costs low. This is achievable using our global supply chain, which
The Universal 3 Series The Universal 3 Series is the latest addition among the Waukesha positive displacement pump family, offering front-loading seal design with no bearings in the product zone with superior cleanability, reducing any risks to food safety. It is also easy to maintain with the new front-loading seal design. Reduced overhung load within the pump and longer seal life also reduces total cost of ownership, ensuring reliability for longer. The Universal TS Series This series can handle multiple process duties— from pumping viscous product fluids to running
clean-in-place supply. Offering bi-directional flow capability, a Universal TS pump can reduce overall number of pumps, valves, and controls. Twin screw principle reduces pressure fluctuations and noise levels, and are available in three screw pitch options. Smooth rotor operation reduces slip pulse in low inlet pressure, low viscosity, and high pressure conditions. It is designed for sanitary process performance. New Homogeniser Models 57/77 Improved from the earlier 55 and 75 versions, the new 57 and 77 Homogenisers have boosted reliability by optimising maintenance, user operation and enhanced transmission design. Advanced oil treatment and cooling give longer service life. Maintenance is further minimised with easy access, visual indicators and ergonomic layout. Both are available in the Rannie and Gaulin series, boosting capacities from 600 to 16,000 per hour. Automation is upgraded with new PLC controls and touchscreen user interface, enabling easier installation, shortening integration and start-up times.

4 CONFERENCE PREVIEW
Sustainable Packaging: Tackling Plastic Waste In Southeast Asia Partnerships And Collaborative Actions To Combat The Plastic Tide
P
lastic, as a material, revolutionised the way food is packaged, distributed and safely consumed. It made billions of people’s lives easier and increased the shelf-life of many food products. Today though, the world is waking up to the long-lasting impact that this material can have on our environment. The volume of plastic waste leaking into our oceans is reaching critical proportions—particularly in Southeast Asia. An estimated 30 percent of all ocean plastic waste—2.4 million tonnes a year—is contributed by just four countries in the region. The problem has reached a global scale, but the issue is regional. This means it requires tailored regional solutions, driven by regional stakeholders. Data will be key to understanding the extent of the issue and developing appropriate solutions. However, until now, the narrative about plastics has been mostly emotive and we have seen very little research and concrete action, especially in Asia. On 14 June 2018, Food Industry Asia (FIA) will host a session at ProPak Asia on tackling the plastic waste crisis, exploring sustainable packaging and how collaborative efforts from regional stakeholders can lead to solutions. FIA will share new findings from its recently commissioned study on plastic waste in Southeast Asia. The study addresses waste leakage points, the impact of current measures in place, and identifies 31 levers that could yield the greatest impact. Focused on the role of the food industry in Asia, it is the first in-depth study of its kind. A panel will also share their views and insights on what needs to be done to keep the region’s waters free of marine litter and help Southeast Asia embrace a Circular Economy.

The Rise Of Cellulose Film In Food Packaging O
n a global scale, the cellulose film packaging market is expected to see a high growth rate—particularly in the Asia Pacific region where the packaging industry as a whole is forecast to experience significant growth. Key to the growing popularity of cellulose film lies in factors such as the materials’ biodegradability, higher demand for packaged and processed food—including frozen foods and takeaway products. These issues are bolstered by macroeconomic aspects like expanding urban populations and rising disposable income. Natural anti-microbial agents used to produce packaging materials can include spice-volatile oils—
black pepper, rosemary, thyme etc. Further, olive leaf extract, grapeseed extract, as well as organic acids such as acetic, lactic, citric acids, and bacteriocins such as nisin and colisin are other anti-microbial agents. In recent years, studies on the use of anti-microbial plant extracts have shown an upward trend, as they are often classified as GRAS (Generally Recognised As Safe). The application of these natural preservatives to food packaging ensures that only low levels of the substances come into contact with the food. This is in line with increasing consumer demand for minimallyprocessed, preservative-free products.

Halal F&B Logistics: More Work Required A
bout 63 percent of the global Muslim population resides in the Asia Pacific region, with the highest populations in Indonesia, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Myanmar. In order to feed this large community, the halal food market in the region constitutes a substantial size—which, in fact, is the largest in the world. While the Halal certification centres on the ingredients’ or contents’ statuses, Halal packaging has been largely overlooked. However, it is a crucial factor in ensuring the integrity of the contents’ Halal status. Within the greater food supply chain, logistics activities such as production, preparation, storage and transportation should ideally incorporate Halal practices. Facing a similar upward trend is the increasing scrutiny into existing products on the market. Beyond the confines of food products, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals are other areas in which Halal packaging comes into play. In the context of Halal packaging in the Muslim market, manufacturers, producers and retailers should emphasise that their products are Halal-certified. Based on several studies into factors influencing product purchase, the Halal logo—certified by a recognised certification agency—is the most crucial element that influences Muslim consumers’ decision. However, this often does not take into consideration the source of the packaging. Halal food packaging should not be made from non-Halal substances, particularly those derived from animal sources. Origin of materials used to produce the packaging—such as gelatines which are commonly found in the production of plastic packaging, or oils used during the formation and cutting processes of metal can production—can be considered najis (loosely translated as unclean). Across the food supply chain and logistics aspects, product handling is another issue to be considered. Apart from segregation—of Halal and non-Halal products— during transportation and storage in warehouses, tools to handle Halal products must not have been used for non-Halal ones to avoid cross-contamination.
Currently, traceability and tracking in the area of Halal packaging—both upstream and downstream in the supply chain—is limited. Traceability in the halal supply chain context refers to web-based halal information available at critical points in the production and distribution process. The situation becomes more problematic, as the origin of food and beverage product
packaging is often significantly more ambiguous than its contents—for both suppliers and consumers alike. However, the halal supply chain extends far beyond food and beverage packaging. Other consumer products such as halal cosmetics and pharmaceuticals offer additional room for consideration in terms of halalworthiness.

UNITED CAPS Brings Innovation to ProPak Asia Euromonitor International as one of the two best baby food closure solutions available in the market. With a focus on closures for infant nutrition in our new Malaysia plant, we believe PROTECSCOOP will be a valuable addition to the Asian market.
What sets UNITED CAPS apart from other capping and closure companies?
T
he Show Daily team speaks to Sebastien H o t t l e t , b u s i n e s s d i r e c t o r A PA C , UNITED CAPS, regarding the company’s participation at ProPak Asia 2018.
What highlights can we expect from UNITED CAPS at ProPak Asia this year? We are pleased to be bringing PROTECSCOOP to ProPak Asia. This flip-top hinged closure features an innovative design that allows one-handed preparation of feeding bottles. Its contamination-free foil-sealed chamber protects the included scoop until use while an integrated hook keeps the scoop handy for further use. The scoop’s thumb-shaped handle makes it easy to use. An incorporated levelling device ensures precise dosing of milk powder, with a dosing range from 8 to 13 ml. It was recently named by market research firm
First, we have extensive experience in integrating our solutions into plant operations, and we leverage that experience with each client to make sure they have the best possible outcomes. Secondly, we continuously work very closely with equipment manufacturers as we design new closures to make sure these closures will work efficiently on the filling line. Finally, we have an exceptional R&D team that looks over every detail of designs for new products, both standard and bespoke, and has always been able to come up with innovative solutions for projects that appeared impossible at the outset. About 50 percent of our business is in bespoke development projects.
Sustainability is a key concern for many in the industry—does UNITED CAPS have a sustainability manifesto? We look at sustainability from beginning to end, from the types of materials we choose to the reduction of waste in every part of the process. Our goal is to meet

today’s needs without compromising the future. We make products greener, and we help reduce the carbon footprint of our customers. As an example, by reducing the weight of our existing caps and closures, we limit our impact on the environment, helping customers decrease their carbon footprints in turn. During the past four years, UNITED CAPS reduced its CO2 footprint by 14 percent. We use modern electrical injection machines in order to significantly decrease electrical consumption and the usage of cooling water.
B r i e f O ve r v i e w O f United Caps UNITED CAPS is an international manufacturer o f h i g h p e r fo r m a n c e plastic caps and closures. The family-owned company is strong in the food, agrochemicals and beverage sectors and continues to grow both organically and through acquisition. The company’s new manufacturing plant in Malaysia is scheduled to be operational in late 2018. This is part of the company’s “Close to You” strategy to better serve the Asian market.

New Sustainable Manufacturing Through A Circular Economy terms of reuse and recycling. The sustainability issue calls on new data streams to be created, and central tools for information-handling. Such tools to handle information include product life-cycle management (PLM) software
and enterprise information system (EIS)—platforms through which business partners can collaborate regarding various issues, such as the optimisation of recycling and/or reuse of materials.

W
ith the new direction towards Industry 4.0, new requirements are being set where data management, Internet of Things and extended product service systems become inextricably tied to traditional manufacturing processes. Yet, core to a circular economy is sustainability management, comprising largely of resource efficiency. With demand for materials quadrupling in the last 50 years, the rising resource scarcity and adverse impacts of virgin materials have created additional urgency for improving efforts of resource efficiency. In such a climate, sustainable manufacturing plays a crucial role—where stewardship extends beyond manufacturing processes and products, and also to encompass the full supply chain across a variety of product life-cycles, with emphasis on material end-oflife considerations. Circular economy is also related to the concept of industrial ecology—promoting the transition of material cycles from an open loop to a closed one, the use of renewable energy resulting in less wastage, and therefore leading to processes which are more resource-efficient. In the manufacturing business context, circular economy takes into account the principles of reduction, lifetime extension—through after-sale services and maintenance—remanufacture, recycle, and reuse. To leverage the potentials of circular economy, business models which support sustainable development are needed by integrating economic, environmental, social and technological aspects. With the shift towards data-driven industries, a management information system facilitates the exchange of information along the product life cycle. Digitalisation, with end-to-end optimisation creates room for possibilities, including automation for work processes and providing decision support in

Reducing Set-Up Time Up To 90 Percent
Experience The New Gebo Cermex At ProPak Asia
If your business operates a labelling machine, production machine or processing machine, including components from SIKO can make can make your operations faster and more efficient. Flexibility and reducing downtime is a key concern for many manufacturers. A coffee manufacturer, for example, may need to produce bags of coffee in varying sizes for different clients. Correspondingly, the machine sizes need to be adjusted in order to cater to larger or smaller packaging. Under usual circumstances, this would require significant downtime to accommodate the change in the size of output produced. This is where SIKO’s products come in. If your business has a manual system, including SIKO’s automated components can reduce set-up time up to 90 percent.
Exhibiting as part of the Sidel Group, along with Sidel, Gebo Cermex will showcase its CoboAccess_Pal, an industrial safe and easy-to-use cobotic palletising solution, recently added to the company’s best-in-class Access portfolio. Visitors to the booth (BW01) will enjoy a first-hand experience of this robust palletiser, that leverages the advantages offered by cobotic solutions in terms of compactness, flexibility, production line efficiency, reliability and—especially—increased welfare for operators. Further future-proof equipment on display will be AQFlex—the intelligent, allin-one product handling solution with its radically new approach to conveying and accumulation, delivering unprecedented packaging line performance—and the top-performing WB46, demonstrating that the 360 degree approach applied by the company to wrap-around mechanisation is the right direction to go in. Guido Ceresole, Zone VP South East Asia Pacific, Gebo Cermex, notes: “We are very much looking forward to introducing our future-proof technologies and market-tailored innovations to our existing and prospective customers, in order to help them achieve long-term superior performance throughout the entire lifecycle of their packaging lines.”
