HIGHLIGHTS 09.00-12.00 Food Innovation Asia Conference 2018 Meeting room 211-212
Could you give us some insights into ProPak Asia’s success this year? The growth of ProPak Asia this year has been incredibly strong, resulting from the impressive measures UBM has taken to improve its marketing to deliver a better exhibition in 2018. We now have access to international marketing tools that are able to support marketing efforts for Platinum Shows—ProPak Asia inclusive. We have new PR vehicles, e-mail systems, data analytics, and access to myriad tools that make us better marketeers who deliver better exhibitions in the long run. ProPak Asia is truly the Number 1 industry show in one of the strongest country markets (Thailand), and a part of one of the strongest regional markets (Asia). The Asia region is still a strong growth driver for the processing and packaging industries, and ProPak Asia is a hub that brings many facets of regional technologies together on one show floor.

As this year’s event comes to an end, what are your key takeaways? Firstly, there is an undeniable quality of ProPak Asia visitors. This year, the show has grown 10 percent and expanded to occupy 9 halls at BITEC, a testament to the ever-increasing number of exhibitors and visitors we have hosted.
Meeting room 222 13.00-15.30 DIP Seminar for SME Meeting room 214-216
Specifically, we’ve had an increase in our overseas buyers (16 percent of total visitors) looking for technology solutions in the region to optimise their operations. Although our core target market is Food, Drink and Pharma, we have expanded our reach to Automotive, Semicon and Consumer Electronics because packaging plays a significant role in these industries as well.

Further, on Day 3, we opened an additional registration counter at Hall 103 to cater to the high volume of registrants. This enabled a faster, streamlined and more efficient registration process for visitors. Looking forward, what can visitors and exhibitors expect next year? In the 27th edition of ProPak Asia next year, we are expecting strong growth in the number of visitors and exhibitors. We have a strong demand for space on the show floor and increasing demand from international pavilions and key exhibitors for a space at the exhibition.
Official Show Daily Brought To You By
On the other hand, we’re also looking into delivering more content at our future exhibitions. We’ve already brought in 2 new seminars this year—Active & Intelligent Packaging and Printech Asia Seminar. We’re seeking new content for next year and will be updating existing content in order to support the industry and its representatives. Overall, I’m very confident of—once again—delivering a bigger, better show next year.

2 Pavilion Highlights The Show Daily team visited several country pavilions to find out:
What are you hoping to achieve at ProPak Asia this year? feedback—which we value—and the market surveys we have done, we have decided to come to ProPak Asia (PKA). Being at PKA for the first time, IBITP has six participating companies this year.”
Masahiro Abe, Deputy Secretary General, Japan Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Association (JPMA), AV46: In ProPak Asia 2018, JPMA participates together with 12 co-exhibitors as the Japan Pavilion. We offer appropriate solutions with a variety of advanced Japanese exhibits relevant to processing and packaging. These cutting-edge sophisticated technologies and innovations can create a more accurate, flexible, productive, and automatic factory line.”
Søren Falck, Leading International Adviser at Dansk Industri, Denmark, BF31: Quentin Mourichon, from International Promotion Services Division, Asociacion Multisectorial de Empresas (AMEC), Spain, AC24: This year, AMEC is back at ProPak Asia (PKA) Bangkok with seven member companies in our pavilion. Some other members are also exhibiting with their local distributors or independently. Being my first time at PKA, I am meeting many local and international representatives, while understanding more about the market here to broaden AMEC’s local network. Asia Pacific region is a fast-growing market with lots of opportunities. For Spanish companies to maximise our presence here for future cooperation, we have to participate in the biggest exhibitions—and PKA is one of them.” Nerida Kelton, Business Development Manager at Australian Packaging & Processing Machinery Association (APPMA), AM36: Attending ProPak Asia for the third year, APPMA recognises the Asia region’s good growth opportunity for member companies. Expanding every year, 2018 sees the Australia Pavilion with 3 blocks, comprising 10 participating members. Our floor space has doubled compared to our first PKA. Among them, two are firsttime exhibitors—including Gold Peg & Natec (a major cheese-processing machine manufacturer). Globally, being the only show that APPMA has a country pavilion in, PKA offers ideal geographical location to ship machines between Australia and Asia.”
Jennifer Wu, Secretary of Taiwan Packaging Association (TPA), AW42: ProPak Asia is a professional platform with a diverse visitor demographic. With a location in Bangkok, our Taiwan machinery manufacturers are able to take advantage of the wide market available here." Soon-Woo Hong, General Manager of Korea Packaging Machinery Association (KPMA), AK38: This is the fifth year that KPMA is participating in ProPak Asia (PKA), with 24 of our member companies exhibiting. Five years ago, we had only about 10 companies here, but with the positive results we have seen, many new companies have since wanted to come here where international buyers meet. Over the years, we have had about 42 companies which have joined PKA but the interest is still rising. Korean machinery manufacturers have recognised the great growth potential of the Southeast Asia market, in comparison to our saturated local one.” Tae-Mo Yoon, representative of Incheon Business Information Technopark (IBITP) and Incheon Pavilion: Thailand, being a large processing market in Asia, follows closely behind Indonesia. Incheon Metropolitan City alone has a big manufacturing sector, with Southeast Asia making up about 70 percent of its international reach. According to our members’
It is the third year that we are having the Danish Pavilion at ProPak Asia. This year, our pavilion comprises 10 companies and occupies about 130 sq m—the largest area we’ve ever had. Thailand and Denmark share a special relationship in dairy production, and some of our new companies are providing innovative solutions in this area—from Danish packaging giant Glud & Marstrand to Essentia Protein Solution (ingredient provider). Common among our participants is that they are technology leaders within their respective fields. So far, many companies have had good leads.”
Gian Paolo Crasta, Marketing & Communication, Italian Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Association (UCIMA), BP35: UCIMA’s presence has been growing steadily annually since joining ProPak Asia about five years ago. The Italian Pavilion is made up of both UCIMA members and non-members—many of them already have branches in Thailand. Here, our companies follow regional trends closely to customise machineries. Based on our market research on Thai customers, we see many similarities compared to Europe and US. Now, we are one of the most important national pavilions with 35 Italian companies participating, occupying over 800 sq m—which we are very satisfied with. We will also be at ProPak Philippines in January 2019.”

Digitisation: Be Part Of The Change
U
BM and Eastern Trade Media brought the 6th edition of the Asia Drink Conference to ProPak Asia yesterday. With over 100 higher management professionals in attendance, the conference boasted a line-up of accomplished speakers who addressed the pressing question of how drink manufacturers can integrate automation and Internet of Things (IoT) into their manufacturing operations to boost productivity. The keynote address was an engaging presentation by Claudia Navarro, Marketing Director of Coca-Cola (Thailand) Limited. With her vast experience in Marketing, gleaned over the past 17 years through companies such as Johnson&Johnson, Ms Navarro notes: “There are a lot of benefits and advantages that the digital world affords us. We have to be mindful of those and find nuances that we can take advantage of.” She continues: “At the core, regardless of your job function—whether it’s technical, marketing, communications, or media planning—our job in business is to fundamentally get the right people, at the right time, with the right message, on the right platform, at the right cost to drive business results.” “There’s a lot to be said about how difficult it is to tick all of those boxes at the same time. It is
important to identify the ways in which you can engage and connect with the right people for your brand—and how to keep them engaged and connected in the long run,” she adds. “Many of the people in this room are involved in packaging, highlighting the importance of carriers in our current context. We need to think of packaging as a channel, a way of communicating our message to our consumers naturally during the course of their day. ” Likewise, Mike Wagner, Packaging Global Business Manager from Rockwell Automation, spoke about digitally transforming the drink industry. He quotes that although many leaders in the beverage industry understand the importance of IoT (87 percent) only 7 percent have developed a strategy that will help businesses take advantage of the benefits of IoT. In order to realise new revenue, businesses need to differentiate and capitalise on digital solutions. In the afternoon, the delegates were split into two parallel tracks: technology and business & marketing. Under the technology track, big names such as Krones, GEA Group, Zebra Technologies and HPS Product Recovery Solutions, presented various digital solutions and products that can help transform a beverage manufacturing business.
In the parallel business & marketing track, consumer trends (SCIEX) and how to keep up with them through packaging (Tetra Pak) were explored. Moreover, an analysis of the Asian beverage market was presented by Euromonitor, and to tie it up, Epicor provided an overview on how business can further their capacity with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP). With the conclusion of this successful edition of ADC, delegates and interested parties can look forward to the 7th edition of the event in 2019, held in conjunction with ProPak Asia.
4 Tokiwa: Keeping It Conventional Within the Asia Pacific region, ProPak Asia is the only trade show in which Tokiwa participates, leveraging its membership with the Japan Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Association (JPMA) as part of the Japanese Pavilion. Having an extensive product reach in the Southeast Asia region—including Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore—Tokiwa’s machinery is mainly for packaging food products such as instant noodles. Other machines in the company’s portfolio are catered for shrink packaging, sprays and tubes, for example. According to Ken Kurihara from the sales department of Tokiwa, in this commodity field, packaging styles are not easily changeable. Therefore, new developments are not always necessary in terms of the machinery, but more in the area of software improvements. With manufacturing operations only performed in Osaka, Japan, and branding itself as a “Made in Japan” company, Tokiwa relies largely on manpower. It does not mass produce its machinery in order to ensure high quality standards. “For example, our company only manufactures about 100 to 120 machines per year. Product delivery takes about six months after an order is placed,” Mr Kurihara added.
Profile Solutions: Inspired By Australian Innovation Started 25 years ago, Profile Solutions— manufacturer of the world’s fastest single-head leak tester, has exported to 35 countries around the world today—including Thailand. Exhibiting as part of Australia Pavilion organised by the Australian Packaging & Processing Machinery Association (APPMA), it is the company’s first time at ProPak Asia. This year, Profile Solutions has made significant inroads into the US market. “20 or 30 years ago, people look at what equipment companies offered. Whereas today, people go to machinery suppliers and say: we want a solution,” says Thomas Mitchell, Director of Profile Solutions. Profile Solutions provides customised leak testers catering to diverse production needs, ranging from 10 ml bottles to 1,000-litre industrial containers in different shapes and styles. Besides speed and flexibility, they feature software that enables expedited results, reducing overall production costs and run-time for manufacturers across varied sectors—pharmaceutical, cosmetic, chemical, automotive lubricants, and largely dairy. One example is the 6LD Vacuum Conveyor showcased at ProPak Asia, which can test up to 14,500 bottles per hour depending on volume. The company prides itself in consistency, affordability and durability—with minimal sale of replacement parts even after 25 years in the market. Mr Mitchell adds: “Across Southeast Asia, we have several hundred working machines. Probably in the not-too-distant future, we will set up a service location in Southeast Asia and more than likely, we will pick Thailand.”

Sidel: When Aseptic Matters A
t ProPak Asia, leveraging over 40 years of aseptic packaging expertise and 35 years working with PET, Sidel is focusing on its aseptic PET packaging solutions. These include the Aseptic Combi Predis™, the unique aseptic solution with dry preform sterilisation, which has had great success with more than 100 solutions installed worldwide up until now. This clear endorsement of the technology by major beverage and dairy companies coupled with the high level of customer satisfaction are ultimately the best indicators
of its values and benefits. This proven solution handles aseptically-filled low and high-acid products in PET bottles, ensuring food safety and product integrity across the supply chain, while offering significant environmental advantages: all of this without compromising on flexibility, ease of operations, and costefficiency. As a further testament to its success, Sidel has recently received Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for this solution. This regulatory acceptance means that the Sidel aseptic blow fill seal solution is the world’s first aseptic PET filler with dry preform sterilisation, validated for low acid manufacturing and commercial distribution in the United States market. Dominique Martin, Vice President Sales South East Asia Pacific at Sidel, emphasises, “Packaging increasingly plays a key role in any marketing mix: it must be eye-catching to differentiate brands in the marketplace – with dependable performance all the way from concept to consumer. We apply our extensive PET packaging expertise from the initial, unique design to package optimisation, from qualifying performance to improving production costs, protecting safety and therefore delivering long-term superior performance.” He continues, “ProPak Asia has been a very important trade fair for Sidel over the last years. The Asia Pacific region continues to record strong growth until 2025, thus fortifying the region’s leading position in food, beverages and tobacco production globally— for example, Asia Pacific will contribute 41 percent of the global beverage production turnover. We look forward to introducing our future-proof technologies and market-tailored innovations to our existing and prospective customers, helping them achieve long-term superior performance throughout the entire lifecycle of their packaging lines.”

It could be something as small as a thumbdrive, nail polish, toys, batteries and other consumer products. We also serve medical products and contact lenses industries in both rigid and soft blister packaging.”
