Young people are so important to our economy and our cover story celebrates the success of the young business person of the year 2012 who comes from East Hampshire.
New enterprise is also crucial for our continuing success – help and advice for new businesses is available, including start-up grants from EHDC, so do find out more about this support and read about the grant recipients in this magazine. Despite the difficult economic climate, local companies continue to enjoy high levels of export business. A recent visit from the UK Trade and Investment, allowed companies to showcase their achievements. Local companies continue develop a presence in overseas markets, for example Elstead lighting has established a sales and distribution facility in Europe for its UK manufactured products. There are signs that local businesses are growing and expanding their operations. There have been business expansions e.g. Norad Travel Group and local businesses have acquired new premises locally for example a 32,000 square feet industrial unit on Bordon Trading Estate was sold to Broxap. So, business success is possible against a challenging economic background – we hope to celebrate yet more in 2013.

Helen McCusker is Young Business Person of the Year 2012 A Petersfield businesswoman is celebrating after being crowned Young Business Person of the Year in the Inspire Business Awards 2012. Following an early career as a local radio presenter, Helen set up her book publicity agency in 2008 aged just 25 and has seen the business flourish during a recession. “Winning this award is an absolute honour,” says the 29-year-old business woman. “I proudly accepted it on stage and promised the audience that I would use it to inspire future generations of young
entrepreneurs. The job market is tough out there for young people right now and they may need to create their own job opportunity in the form of a start-up. I’ve worked hard and proved that it can be done if you have passion and drive.” The Inspire Business Awards highlight successful companies in North Hampshire, allowing leading business people to gain the recognition they deserve. The Young Business Person of the Year category was sponsored by Hampshire County Council and rewards people under 30 years
of age who have used their initiative to successfully operate in business and demonstrate entrepreneurial skills. The winners were revealed at a glittering champagne dinner and ceremony at the Hampshire Court Hotel. Judges were impressed with Helen’s drive and her commitment to give something back to the business community to help and inspire her peers. Helen is currently using her expertise in a voluntary capacity working as a business mentor and guest speaker for Young Enterprise South- East. She is currently involved in the University of Portsmouth’s Start-Up programme. Senior Lecturer in Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Zoe Dann said: “We are delighted to have Helen as a volunteer mentor on our new Young Enterprise Start-up programme here at Portsmouth Business School. Helen’s success in Business and PR is really inspiring for her team and the 135 students who are starting up and running their businesses as part of their studies.”

EHEN (East Hampshire Environment Network) Greener Business Workshop EHEN in conjunction with the Whitehill & Bordon Eco Town held a Greener Business Workshop on 23 October 2012 at the Eco-Station. The aim of the event was to encourage local businesses to adopt more eco-friendly practices and to demonstrate that far from costing them money, it should actually help them to save it. The event was opened by the Mayor Tony Muldoon. Trudy Thompson of Bricks and Bread, a social enterprise, said she feels that waste is the key and 30% can be saved off the bottom line
by not sending anything to landfill. Businesses give her reusable waste and for example she took 12,000 tables, chairs and desks from the Olympic site. These have all been reused and as a Social Enterprise she uses some of the profit to provide work placements for young people classified as NEETs (not in Education, Employment or Training). John Charnock-Wilson outlined EHEN’s offer to business with special emphasis on STEM (Steps to Environmental Management). This

is a step by step approach designed for SMEs which is done on line and is compatible with ISO standards. There are three phases but it must have management commitment to work. The discussion following the presentations centred on how energy could be reused to heat other buildings and how businesses could work together to recycle their waste products. easthampshire-environment.net
Beau-Port Kitchens and Interiors It’s Lunchtime and 14 Kitchens to choose from..... When the Johnson family stop for lunch at their Beau-Port Kitchens and Interiors showroom, they face the dilemma of choosing which one of their show kitchens to take a break in. The fourteen different styles of kitchens at their 2000 sq ft showroom at Bentworth include the recent addition of a new natural oak ‘Shaker’ style kitchen, complete with a signature colour AGA in heather, establishing Beau-Port as the local AGA showroom for the area. The excitement doesn’t stop with cookers - Beau-Port has extended their business area into the broader world of interiors and now design and install beautiful fitted bedroom and bathroom furniture, as well as create fitted home studies and media rooms.
Mark Johnson had many years of experience in the industry before establishing Beau-Port in 1999 with his wife Clare and more recently their eldest son Jacob has joined the company. The business moved to their huge showroom premises at Bellhanger Business Park in Bentworth, near Alton, six years ago, and Mark commented: “Vistors to the showroom can see our contemporary and traditionally styled full scale high quality kitchens, which they can ‘testdrive’ in a way, where they can sit in, linger and have the time to enjoy and experience the various kitchen styles that are all really affordable. We also understand the important investment our customers are making in their homes and guide and care for them every step of the way.”

Experience has shown that cooling towers, evaporative condensers and hot and cold water systems in a wide variety of workplaces present a risk of exposure to legionella bacteria. Other potential sources include humidifiers and spa baths. Under general health and safety law, employers have to consider the risks from legionella that may affect their staff or members of the public and take suitable precautions.. As an employer or a person in control of the premises you must –

All small and medium sized enterprises rely on IT for the day-to-day running of their businesses, and whether you have a basic system or a sophisticated network, the threat of IT downtime is a constant worry. At best, IT problems are disruptive; at worst, they can have a disastrous effect on your business. The traditional insurance against IT downtime is an IT maintenance contract, but in difficult times small businesses either pay regular contract fees for a service they may not need, or cut costs at the risk of expensive downtime if their IT fails. Local IT company Pay As You Go has created an innovative solution for businesses, offering fast, expert service when it’s needed, but charging no contract fees when it isn’t. Pay As You Go MD Andy Synyszyn, an IT professional who has been supporting local businesses for more than a decade, believes this is the way forward for SMEs. Owner-Employee Contracts Article by TaxAssist Doug Clanchy of TaxAssist Accountants in Liss comments on the latest scheme from the Government and notes that: • The Chancellor’s owneremployee employment contracts have little relevance to the majority of the UK’s small companies. • Typically small companies have less than £1,000 of issued share capital, so existing shareholders would have to increase their shareholding considerably in order to retain their controlwhich could cost the existing shareholders thousands.
18
• The Government has offered the ‘carrot’ of the shares being exempt from capital gains tax, but firstly, where is the market for these shares to be sold on and how will they be valued? And secondly, everyone is entitled to the Annual Exemption which is currently £10,600- so gains will have to be quite significant in order to truly benefit from the concession. Doug adds; “I am also concerned that employers could risk losing employees or close the door to new recruits if they offer only these employee-owner contracts, because the rights the employees forfeit are so great.
East Hampshire Business News – January 2013
“The Government will have to seriously and carefully consider the details surrounding these new contracts, to ensure there is a quantifiable benefit to employees, employers do not lose out on good staff and that existing shareholders do not pick up the bill. “But what we really hope is that the Government will turn its focus to the more urgent issues facing small employers, such as the huge administrative and financial burden they will soon face with the introduction of Real Time Information.”

problems and major tax bills. If there is no Will the State distributes assets and a family may be left in bitter disagreement. It is commonly thought: • A legally married spouse inherits everything in all circumstances. This is not true. • Orphans are handed over to next of kin. This is not true either. They become the responsibility of the Local Authority which appoints guardians. • A common law spouse or long term partner inherits. This is not true.
• Children’s inheritance can be safeguarded until they are old enough to use it wisely. • The surviving spouse’s interests can be provided for and trusts guarantee the inheritance of the next generation. • If any member of the family is in receipt of social benefits their entitlement can be protected. • Using Trusts within your Will can preserve assets from Care Fees.
Wills are not a recurring cost.
• If you own business property or agricultural property then a trust can also save a great deal of inheritance tax.

I like Twitter, but... ... I do sometimes worry that it’s becoming a bit of a community within a community. Take the tweet below – if I’m honest it took me a little while to understand the content but what I couldn’t workout was how or why I’d received it…. then I realised it’s because I follow American Express for their travel services. “Tx, Fab @MBooth! #jayzsyncshow “@RodLongman: Faces of @ AmericanExpress@mlisahamly & @ nickburtonme in TJ booth! instagr. ag/p/IGpQetgfLY/” I’ve changed the detail but it occurred to me that what began as a very simple way of sharing information has since developed its own language to such an extent that sometimes these 140 character messages actually exclude people rather than inform them.
Every community/ industry has its own language and if you are part it you understand. As PR professionals, we are often challenged to find the words and phrases that bring clarity and we strive to avoid the worst excesses of management speak…but actually some phrases and acronyms resonate so strongly in certain sectors that they act as automatic tick boxes to the recipients. Journalists generally hate management-speak because these words and phrases often create a barrier between the speaker and most of the audience. It’s all about knowing your audience and adapting the lexicon so that it resonates with the people you want to reach. Of course I could have phrased this previous sentence differently…along the lines of – We need to ‘segment our
audience, ‘deep-dive’ into their ‘mindset’, establish the ‘long-pole’ criteria, offer a ‘heads-up’ on our ‘helicopter view’ and ‘dialogue’ our ‘deliverables’. Mobile Phones - We just can’t do business without them! A mobile is an essential component of today’s business technology. Customers expect business owners to be accessible at all times and many encourage this by answering calls, texts and emails the instant they are received - how often have you taken your mobile to breakfast or on holiday? Apparently, 76% of UK mobile phone users are on the wrong contract! And, lots of us have personal and business mobiles. The world of contracts, tariffs, add-on’s etc. is generally very complex, it’s no wonder that most of us have trouble getting this right. Not so, with Utility Warehouse. Being honest about how much do you pay for your phone per year
could be quite a shock. If you are working to improve profit margins, saving around 33% per year on your mobile(s) could make a significant difference. Top cost cutting tips: 1. Review your usage - understand how many minutes you use for calls,(are they are in or out of your call bundle) how many texts, and how much data do you use per month. 2. Do you need the latest handset - this is a business tool, not a status symbol. 3. Don’t pay for 0870 calls. Find an alternative (01, 02, 03) e.g. via the web or using a phone App 4. If you need to change your
handset, sell the old one to offset the costs. 5. Reduce directory enquiry costs. Use your data to search the web for a number (getting a number from some 118 services can cost as much as £3); don’t exceed your data limit as that is also expensive. 6. Check your need for separate handset insurance. It may be covered by existing policies or even your bank account. Smart cookies - your website may not be compliant with the new legislation… Article by Zoe Dunn, Mzuri Design Did you know that EU legislation surrounding website cookies has been revised recently, changing the playing field for many companies and their online presence? So what are cookies? When you visit a site that uses cookies for the first time, a simple, small text file or cookie is downloaded onto your computer. The next time you visit that site, the cookies tells it that you have been there before, and in some cases, tailors what pops up on screen to take account of that fact. Cookies are particularly used on websites that collect visitor information, such as ecommerce sites but even simple sites use
anyway then implied consent to use cookies is assumed. This should be something to be aware of as a user and particularly as a website owner. cookies, for example if Google Analytics is installed on your site then it uses cookies. According to the legislation, websites now need to ask permission from visitors to enable cookies and many do this with a pop-up box that seeks consent at the point of first visit only. However, a clause in the legislation enables the concept of ‘implied consent’, if a visitor is presented with the pop-up cookies notification on a site and proceeds to use the site
Thankfully it is a simple matter to implement the changes needed to meet the new regulations on cookie consent and although the change came into effect in May 2012, many are still seeking help and advice on the matter. With that in mind, the key message is ‘don’t panic’, there are simple steps you can take to make sure that your website complies. Digital Marketing – Time to Like It!
Marketing is evolving at a rapid pace, and even for marketing companies, it can be difficult to keep up! The way we reach out to our Tina Webb target audience and engage with them has changed considerably with the adoption of social media platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc. The digital marketing diagram shown here, gives a flavour of the extent of activities used to interact and engage with customers – quite staggering!
Picture this; your customer spends time online, listening, interacting and taking advice from a multitude of people – family, real friends, online ‘friends’ – including, perhaps, opinions about your products / services. Where is your business in this conversation? As a business, you have no choice; you need to be ‘out there’ too. Four questions arise; • What activities should you be participating in? • How do you make your website and social presence stand out from the crowd? • What resources – money and time – are required? • How do you measure success?Be clear on why you are doing it; you want to reach
more people; you want them to take actions which leads to them becoming customers and then you want to keep them as customers. Advice tips; • Ask others what works for them. • Have a plan in place. What? How? Who? • Start slowly and build up. A comfortable pace, in a couple of areas, executed well. • Measure, test and tweak! Really important; don’t be a busy fool. Finally, be patient, be realistic (difficult when sales are needed); you are moving in the right direction! Want to ask questions or know more? 4 business mistakes you may not know you’re making Simply trying to keep up with the everyday running of a small business can be full of potential mistakes to avoid.
Lack of growth It’s vital to keep your business growing and evolving, and you can do this by taking stock of where it is and where it’s heading on a regular basis. I expect your business has changed since you first started up. If it has, just make sure you’re still the one in control of the steering wheel and you know where you’re heading.
Not taking enough action If you ever look around at the end of a day and can’t see any tangible output, then you’ve probably been involved in ‘busy-ness’ rather than business. I have an index card pinned to the cork board I check every day, which says: “What 1 action will you take today to move your business forward?”
Unfocused marketing Do you wonder why all your hard work hasn’t resulted in new business? Providing a clear message, planning marketing campaigns well in advance, and taking consistent action will help to keep you focussed and getting results. Review your current marketing and stop doing what isn’t working
Allowing doubts to get in the way of progress You may be the very best in your field but if you don’t believe in your abilities, progress will be slow and success elusive. Mindset issues vary from one person to another, and need to be addressed head on! LEADER funding project - a great success for the rural economy The Fieldfare LEADER* programme - which supports farmers, foresters, growers, small businesses, tourism operators and the rural communities of East Hampshire and Winchester draws to a close next year. The LEADER project has successfully allocated over £1.4m to 119 projects and is no longer accepting new applications. You can find details of the projects supported at www.fieldfareleader.org.uk Over 10,000 volunteer hours have been provided by the members of the Local Action Group (LAG) which includes local rural business owners, community organisations,
farmers and individuals who want to make a difference within rural communities. Initial data suggests that LEADER projects in the area have achieved over £7m investment in the local rural economy, including several new business start-ups; created over 125 new jobs and enabled more than 200 existing jobs to continue. The LAG’s achievements put the group in the top 10% of LEADER projects across the EU. There are still over 25% of England LEADER groups who are yet to achieve 60% commitment of their funding allocation. Fieldfare was the first of the new groups in England to achieve this.
The Fieldfare Local Action Group is exploring how best to build upon these achievements and prepare to bid for the next round of funding that is due to be released in 2014. The Programme Team continues to process claims and are busy with the task of collating project evaluation information. Guest of honour was the Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire, Dame Mary Fagan DCVO JP. The annual awards are open to businesses and organisations around Hampshire. Organised by the Campaign to Protect Rural England (Hampshire), in conjunction with Hampshire Fare and Hampshire Ambassadors, they celebrate the county’s diverse, living countryside. The Rural Enterprise category is supported by SmithsGore, one of the UK’s leading firms of chartered surveyors and property consultants. what they can do following higher education and make them see that choosing agriculture was the best decision they ever made.”Richard Buer (Alton & Petersfield NFU Group Secretary and Senior Agent of NFU Mutual in Selborne covering East Hampshire) said:”It is very important to keep new, young, fresh blood coming into the industry. 80% of the land in East Hampshire is farmed and challenges of feeding the world will become increasingly important with population growth and pressures on food, water and power over the coming years”. The magazine highlights the work the NFU is doing for those young people entering the sector and subscribers can enjoy a free NFU student membership, which comes with lots of benefits.
Features include columns from current students and young farmers, a ‘diary dates’ page, two-page infographic on what farming looks like now and what it will need to do in the future as well as information on NFYFC. It is also hoped that students will Tweet pictures of themselves or post pictures to Instagram with their new Keep Calm and Farm posters. Students can pick up a copy at their college or download a free copy from http://issuu.com/ studentfarmer/docs/studentfarmer_ september Queries can be sent to studentfarmer@nfu.org.uk and the #studentfarmer can be used on Twitter.

Alice Holt gets the green light for brand new visitor centre The Forestry Commission has secured funding for the first stage of a new visitor centre to be built at Alice Holt Forest. The eco-friendly centre will include a new visitor arrival and information area with a volunteer ranger base and brand new toilets, including a ‘Changing Places’ disabled toilet. Having been granted planning permission by East Hampshire District Council, construction began in September by contractors Mansell and the new facilities are due to be open by May 2013. Planning permission has also been granted for the provision of a
dedicated cycling centre and larger education centre, which will be built at a later date. With an environmentally sustainable design, the building will be constructed from timber and the roof will feature cedar shingles and long stretches of windows to make maximum use of natural light. A wood fuel boiler will also be installed to heat the building, using wood as a source of renewable energy. Karen Guest, Recreation Development Manager at the Forestry Commission, said: “People love coming to Alice Holt and we want to ensure they feel welcome
when they arrive at the forest centre. When we surveyed our visitors to find out how we could improve their visit, they said they wanted better facilities. The toilets and information areas were in most need of an upgrade, so it made sense to have these built first. “The local team is working hard to ensure that the building works have minimal impact on visitors and the rangers are particularly excited to see the project unfold and get settled in their new base.” For more information, visit www.forestry.gov.uk/aliceholt

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard sails into a new era 2013 is exciting year for the city as Portsmouth Historic Dockyard sees the opening of the eagerly anticipated new Mary Rose Museum, 30 years after she was watched on television by millions being raised from the Solent (October 11th, 1982). The £35 million project to build an internationally-renowned museum and complete the conservation, reunites the hull of the Mary Rose with many of the 19,000 Tudor artefacts recovered from the seabed. It will showcase the very best in 21st century architecture and construction, and the finest collection of 16th century artefacts in the world. Visitors will see the ship without its preserving sprays and will witness the final phase of the hull’s conservation through windows into a ‘hotbox’ as up to 100 tons of water is removed from the ship’s timbers.
New galleries contain some of the thousands of objects recovered, in context, running the length of the ship, corresponding to deck levels so visitors can experience what the decks would have looked like moments before the Mary Rose sank. Six themed galleries tell the personal stories and working lives of the crew on board. The Mary Rose is in very distinguished company alongside HMS Victory, HMS Warrior 1860, and the National Museum of the Royal Navy, at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. It is the only place in the world where visitors can feel at firsthand what it was really like to serve and fight on board the ships that shaped Britain’s history – alongside modern warships of the Royal Navy. Add in the interactive Action Stations and a Harbour Tour, for a full day out. 2013 will also see continuing work on new galleries at the National Museum of the Royal Navy (NMRN), due to open by 2014, the centenary
of the start of World War I, marking the Navy’s vital role. The galleries will tell the story of the Royal Navy since 1900, a largely untold part of our maritime heritage and a Special Exhibitions Gallery will also be added. It is an exciting time for Portsmouth Historic Dockyard as support from the Heritage Lottery Fund has enabled it to develop plans to tell the navy story in a uniquely inspirational and moving way. Over the next few years, with the development of the NMRN, and the Mary Rose, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard will demonstrate why it remains one of the country’s most popular tourist attractions. To register interest in a preview tour of the new Mary Rose – please send an email to enquiries@historicdockyard. co.uk and put “Mary Rose Business Preview” in the subject box.

How the boardgame will help younger players This exciting boardgame has been designed and created to help young players, in a fun and constructive way, to develop their hand-eye co-ordination, ‘fine motor’ skills as well as their visual spatial awareness and concentration skills. It also intends to help with developing memory and picture recognition skills as each player attempts to match a rhyming pair of cards (a practice often used to support children with dyslexia). Each player must compete with each other, whilst matching a rhyming pair of cards as quickly as possible in order to progress through the game to reach the bananas. Watch out for the logs that are located along the way! SEN Values (Special Education Needs) The educational aspect of the boardgame was considered to be one of the most important factors that the creator wanted to emulate. The boardgame aspires to help players in developing their phonological awareness skills. Players can learn to associate sounds with symbols.
‘Bright, colourful images for entertainment and a fantastic learning aid’ This beautifully illustrated rhyming board game will help children with word recognition and vocabulary development as well as phonological awareness skills
It aims to enhance the visual learning skills by encouraging those with certain learning difficulties to boost their confidence. The careful incorporation of developing the kinaesthetic learning skills of young players by letting them achieve a hands-on experience is aided by the use of colourful counters and brightly laminated pictures. The boardgame has been created with an eye to achieving a multi-purpose use. These include the Rhyming Pair Race, Making Sentences, Memory Game, Creating Stories or simply using the counters and die provided.
