Going for growth The start of 2015 has proved to be a time of great success and achievement for our local businesses and the economy. Building on the success of the previous year, businesses have continued to celebrate great achievements and demonstrate the benefits of succession planning.

This edition of the business magazine covers the Get East Hants Working apprenticeship scheme and how it has helped young people get into employment. In addition, the magazine includes news of the sisters who have taken over management of Bordon’s G&B Designs Ltd.
With the elections out of the way, Business East Hants is now focusing on driving forward enterprise growth in partnership with East Hampshire District Council. Throughout the year, we will be seeking new ideas and suggestions from local businesses on what actions or programmes are required to foster business growth and prosperity. In addition, East Hampshire District Council has recently launched the Strategy for Business 2015-2021 which outlines what ought to be done to make the district an attractive location for investment and employment. Read about the strategy on page five. And finally, enjoy the best seasonal produce the area has to offer by visiting the Hampshire Farmers’ Markets. Getting personal – the benefits of targeted printed marketing Of the many ways to reach your customers and directly market your business, print based mailing should not be underestimated. With the advance of the digital print process it is now easy to produce full colour direct mail fully personalised – direct to your customer. You can go far beyond a simple overprinted name and address: the personalisation can be integrated directly into the design. The variable data can be used to uniquely change the text and the graphical elements of each piece of mail. Personalisation benefits your marketing campaign because it allows you to engage your customers directly in a way that a ‘cold’ unaddressed door drop would not.

The physical nature of mail allows greater production options, the choice of paper stock and finishing can all be tailored. The tactile way people interact with the marketing gives it a higher status and research has found that 57% of consumers said mail makes them feel more valued, compared to 17% who said the same about email* Print it can help you to devise your campaign, help you to target the right customers, design the artwork, and using our digital presses produce the final mailing. We can even fulfil the deployment of the campaign with our mailing service.

Being business friendly In the spring East Hampshire District Council launched a new business strategy to help achieve their ambition of becoming the most business-friendly council in the UK. The strategy states that EHDC will make the district an attractive location for investment and employment by improving infrastructure, developing skills and supporting local businesses. Working with private and public sector partners to make East Hampshire a vibrant business and visitor destination with an unparalleled quality of life.
Through the strategy EHDC have committed to making more land available for commercial use and investing in the roll-out of high speed broadband. Skills will be developed through a construction training centre planned for Whitehill and Bordon and through schemes funded partly by contributions from property developers. The council plans to develop a dedicated planning service for businesses, offer local businesses support and funding and ensure town centres and business parks are clean, safe and accessible.

Developer agreement secures jobs for local people Jobs and training opportunities will be available to local people at a Clanfield housing development thanks to an innovative agreement we have struck with the developer. House builder Barratt and David Wilson Homes has agreed to guarantee employment, apprenticeships and training to local people when work starts
on a 207-house development on Chalton Lane. There will also be educational opportunities such as workshops, work experience and traineeships. The approach forms part of the EHDC Get East Hants Working initiative and aims to maximise benefits of new development for local people.
The agreement will see five jobs set aside for East Hampshire people as well as 15 apprenticeships. These can be construction roles or office admin. For more information contact business@easthants.gov.uk

Respected business owner retires After almost 20 years David Preston (54), who set up ADP Security Systems Ltd with fellow Petersfield resident Alan Day in 1996, has announced his retirement. David has decided to take an early retirement to allow more time for his hobby of exploring the world on his Harley Davidson motorbike. He said: “ADP has been an immensely rewarding experience for me and I’m proud to have helped it grow and become recognised as one of the best security providers in the country. It’s time to let the younger generation take ADP to the next level. “I’m looking forward to a complete break from business for a while and plan to visit Australia, New Zealand and America. There is nothing like
seeing the views of a new country open up before you, from the seat of a Harley.” Alan Day will continue as director of ADP Security, with the existing core management team. He said: “Dave will be deeply missed as a
friend and colleague but we wish him all the best. His work has firmly established ADP Security as a solid business with a good, strong foundation for further growth.” www.adpsecurity.co.uk 01730 261510

Live-in care services go from strength to strength at Bluebird Care achievements and has experienced first-hand the positive impact this service has made on people’s lives. Business Manager Robert Fielder joined Bluebird Care in January 2014 and has been working alongside Leigh McDonald to develop this specialised type of care and support. “Live-in home care is now a viable alternative service provision to residential and nursing homes. The costs are very similar but live-in home care delivers person-centred support in the safety of their own home – something residential living will never achieve,” Robert comments. On average, Bluebird Care Petersfield provides live-in care support for 30 customers each month. The range of supports can be from basic companionship all the way through to end of life care.

Liss Biz – East Hampshire’s newest business forum Everyone from web to dress designers turned up to smell the fresh coffee at East Hampshire’s newest business forum. A dozen local entrepreneurs came to the inaugural gathering of Liss Biz, a new group for businesses based in the village. Liss Biz is a local initiative started by Keren Burney of Compege PR and financial advisor Campbell Wilson of Core Financial Services, both of whom live and work in the village, which boasts six business parks. Mrs Burney said: “We thought it would be great for people to find out who else is operating in Liss to share ideas and for mutual support.
Longer term we can also bring more money into the village by recommending Liss businesses.” The event was held at 41 Wine Bar & Coffee House on Station Road, Liss, in April. The offer of fresh coffee and the chance to share experiences attracted a variety of businesspeople, both experienced and new, to make local contacts. Similar events are planned to be held every two months at business locations around Liss. Following a career in engineering, Kerstin Ochel has recently set up her bespoke dressmaking business

in Liss. She said: “There’s a lot of exchange of community information in Liss but it’s also very useful for business to do the same. Whitehill & Bordon retail businesses benefit from expert advice The Whitehill & Bordon Regeneration Team at East Hampshire District Council has enlisted retail specialists Vision On to deliver a business support programme in the town which has already been a tremendous success. Nineteen businesses have taken part and are already benefitting from the project, with 14 receiving grants of ÂŁ1,000 each to make improvements. There were two levels of support on offer: The intensive programme which included developing a bespoke action plan to improve their business as well as 10 weekly oneto-one in-store coaching visits from Vision On; and The less intense package where businesses were helped to develop bespoke action plans to help them make the most of their business. Businesses taking part in the intensive programme also benefitted from masterclasses in stock and space management, sales performance and planning promotions. They also learnt more about digital retail and received training to get them up to speed with social media. The businesses which received grants have been able to start implementing key changes which were identified in the action plans. They are already finding these really useful and have had positive feedback, for example, they have repainted their shop fronts, put up

new signs and changed the internal layout. There will be a celebration event in July for the participants, with an opportunity to share their successes and showcase their achievements. So far, 78% of those shops involved in the programme have experienced an uplift in sales. This retail support programme is being overseen by the Whitehill &
Bordon Regeneration Project at East Hampshire District Council. The programme helps existing businesses prosper as Whitehill & Bordon is transformed from garrison town to green town with 3,350 new homes, 5,500 new jobs, a new town centre and new facilities. www.whitehillbordon.com whitehillbordon@easthants.gov.uk 01730 234329

EHDC scheme benefits young people More young people will have the chance to get a job, get a wage and get training thanks to East Hampshire District Council’s flourishing apprenticeship scheme.
In 2014, 24 young people were set on a path to employment this way and EHDC hope to help another 20 over the next 12 months.
EHDC has dedicated another £150,000 for 2015 to give young job hunters the best possible start in their career.
EHDC contribute towards travel expenses and supplementing apprentices’ training and wages, ensuring that they will earn the national minimum wage or above – that’s not something every apprentice around the country can say. They also get interview training and help with their CVs.
Apprenticeships give young people the skills they will need for the future and employers the chance to train new talent in the roles they need.
The scheme in action
Jack Armitstead (22), Medstead, an apprentice at Bookers & Bolton Solicitors, Alton. Jack was recommended for the apprenticeship scheme by the Job Centre as he was looking for jobs but was low on confidence. “I had studied law at A-Level but now I am actually doing the job and picking up so much practical experience they never taught me at college! “Without this scheme I wouldn’t have had the chance to gain the skills I have and get a foot in the door of the legal profession. “It’s given me a lot more confidence to go out and say ‘this is what I can do’.”
Kati Whitehead (22), Alton, an apprentice at Morgan Innovation and Technology Ltd, Petersfield. Kati withdrew from her university degree for health reasons and the Job Centre recommended she speak to EHDC about an apprenticeship. Now she is working four days a week and studying for an Electronic and Electrical Engineering degree one day a week. “I did want to be a maths teacher but now my maths goes into making a machine. What I am learning is actually being used to make something real, that’s really cool! “I wouldn’t have known about this job without the apprenticeship scheme. This is somewhere I want to stay and work, the scheme has inspired a lot of loyalty in me for the company.” Want to be an apprentice? Looking to offer apprenticeships at your business? Flat Spaces Hampshire – A new holiday concept for the disabled traveller A Hampshire-based mouth and foot painting artist has formed a collaboration with Polish house builder Dan-Wood, with the aim of building fully accessible state-ofthe-art holiday homes for people with severe disabilities. A board member of the International Mouth and Foot Painters Association, Tom Yendell came up with the idea of ‘Flat Spaces’ following a conference several years ago in the USA, where it was reported that up to 2 billion dollars was lost annually to tourism as disabled people did not travel.

Flat Spaces is now a registered charity, with the first completed bungalow – which has commenced taking bookings – located at the Watercress Lodges and Campsite off Bighton Hill, Ropley, near Alresford. “Research shows that many severely disabled people rarely go on holiday because they think they won’t be able to cope,” says Tom, who was named Man of the Year in 1988 for his work with the lessabled. “For the first time in the UK, Flat Spaces will offer purpose-built holiday homes to people with mild to severe disabilities, knowing they can have complete confidence that the accommodation will be totally accessible in whichever Flat Space they visit.” Flat Spaces Foundation will manage charitable donations and organise construction of the bungalows. Food Festivals and fun from the Hampshire Farmers’ Markets There is nothing more vibrant than the sights, sounds, smells and especially the tastes that you can experience at a farmers’ market. The Hampshire Farmers’ Markets (HFMs) are held throughout East Hampshire, including monthly markets at Petersfield, Alton and just a little further south, Winchester – the largest farmers’ market in the country.
Summer celebrations Regular HFM markets will form part of the Southsea Food Festival on Sunday 19 July and the Winchester Hampshire Food Festival on 26 July. Plus the Hampshire Hog Day celebrations that take place at the Winchester Market on the 27 September, which will include the popular and exciting Piglet Racing event. “The summer months are our best time for seasonal produce,” commented Alex Handford, Business Manager for the Hampshire Farmers’ Markets. “The market looks so colourful and the
warmer, better weather brings more people out in search of a wider range of food, with many of our producers selling things shoppers can’t get anywhere else.” “Supporting the environment, the rural economy and rural employment are key functions of the HFM, with savings on middle man costs and food miles passed onto the consumers. Every producer has to also meet a very high criteria and to be based within Hampshire or within ten miles of the county border. We are always interested in speaking to new producers about our markets and to further extend the wide range of produce we have on offer.” Hampshire Farmers’ Markets are held at Petersfield, Romsey, Alton, Emsworth, Southsea and Ringwood each month, with the Winchester market held twice a month. hampshirefarmersmarkets.co.uk Images: © Hampshire Farmers’ Markets

Jane Devlin, EHDC Energy Strategy Manager describes her first few months in post I started my job in March, and my role is to implement the Energy Strategy adopted last November by East Hampshire District Council. Familiarising myself with the area, I am delighted to find so many businesses and organisations with great ideas for a low-carbon, energy-efficient and vibrant business community. I have joined at an interesting time, to see the approval of planning permission in April which will transform Whitehill & Bordon from garrison town to green town. The town is aiming to attract green technologies and an advanced automotive hub to encourage companies working on smart technology and transformative energy projects to locate in the heart of East Hampshire. We already have some great projects in the pipeline. There are plans to implement new renewableenergy capacity: solar PVs (solar panels) on roofs and ‘districtheating’ schemes which run on locally-sourced wood-fuel. Funding to map out opportunities is lined up,
and the next step is for feasibility assessments later this year for three such schemes. But it is not all about energy use in buildings: transport-related carbonemissions are set to be reduced too. We aim to install an electricvehicle charge-point network with rapid chargers to make electric vehicles a viable alternative to standard vehicles for businesses and residents. It is my firm belief that ‘going green’ goes hand-in-hand with being competitive, innovative and seeking new ways of working. And this is true whether you are a sole trader or small firm, a large organisation or consider the local economy in East Hampshire as a whole. I hope you and your colleagues and partners will be able to meet me at one of the events we are planning over the next few months. www.easthants.gov.uk/ energystrategy jane.devlin@easthants.gov.uk 01730 234014

What’s next for business broadband? There are a number of developments on the horizon that offer intriguing new avenues for businesses looking to improve their internet connectivity, including those in the countryside where affordable alternatives are rare.
FTTP Most fibre optic broadband in the UK is what’s known as Fibre To The Cabinet (FTTC). That means those snazzy fibre links run to the green boxes in streets, then the connection into the home uses the old telephone lines. This is cheaper and quicker to install, but limits the speed. Fibre To The Premises (FTTP) is a ‘full fibre’ solution that runs fibre all the way, and it’s vastly superior in performance. FTTP is offered in the UK by BT and a number of smaller firms, but deployment so far has been slow. As demand for such services increases, more businesses will be able to take advantage, and it’s not expensive compared to the price of a high speed leased line. There are also successful projects to roll it out in rural areas, which is a huge boost for companies in remote locations that have so far been neglected.

4G provides a much-needed improvement over the old 3G mobile networks in terms of speed, easily capable of outpacing the asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) and potentially challenging FTTC fibre broadband. The great thing about 4G is that it’s wireless: you only need a suitable receiver to get fast broadband anywhere there’s signal. So you can wave goodbye to the hassle of installing and maintaining a wired connection.
We’re used to Wi-Fi offering short range signals that make it easy to get network access in homes and offices, but in some areas providers have established wireless internet over very wide areas using powerful transmitters. In order to get online, all you need is a receiver on the outside of the building, with the other end plugged into a standard Wi-Fi router or network switch to get everyone online. This does away with the need for a phone line and can offer speeds up to 100Mb, or more.
This can be useful if you frequently travel for business as the broadband can go where you are, and it could also be a game-changer for rural locations.

Drive in-store traffic using online marketing: 5 tips for local businesses Did you know that you can drive serious footfall into your store through online marketing – even if you don’t sell online? A website optimised for local search lays the foundations for success – here are five ways to take it further. 1 By claiming your Google My Business profile you can create a stronger brand presence across Search, Maps and Google+, and promote offers and events to encourage customers into stores. 2 Claim your business’s profiles on local listings sites, making sure that name, address and phone number appear accurately across the board. The more consistently your data appears, the more likely it is that your business will appear in local search results. 3 Social media, often described as ‘free marketing’, can be a time sink – and your time doesn’t
come for free. Use it effectively by developing a social media plan. If your goal is to reach local customers through Facebook or Twitter, you could offer in-store vouchers on your social pages. 4 Paid search helps maintain your brand presence in the search engine results. You can target a relevant audience, meaning you’ll only have people in the preselected area(s) seeing your advert. You can also encourage customers to click through
to a landing page to book an appointment, for example. 5 Email can improve your communication with customers and help you drive in-store traffic. But you’ll need to think creatively to stand out. Use a compelling subject line as well as relevant, accessible content to tell your story effectively. www.growonlinemarketing.co.uk 0845 652 0356

Deregulation Act to reduce burdens on businesses One of the last Acts to pass before the 2015 Election was the Deregulation Act 2015. The Act reduces some regulatory burdens on businesses that are granted a licence by East Hampshire District Council (EHDC), such as pubs and taxi drivers. For premises providing regulated entertainment, such as music and plays, there are a number of measures meaning that from April 2015, some entertainment is no longer licensable. For example, no licence under the Licensing Act 2003 would be required for:
• Recorded music on licensed premises between 08:00-23:00 provided the audience does not exceed 500. There are also new exemptions from licensing of entertainment on premises owned by schools, hospitals, community groups and local authorities.
For the District’s hundreds of taxi drivers and private hire firms, there are likely to be measures later this year extending the standard duration for drivers’ licences from one to three years. There is also likely to be a measure allowing Private Hire Operators to sub-

Alton Community Centre gets a make-over! Laleham Health & Beauty sent a team of volunteers to Alton Community Centre to decorate one of their well used community rooms in May. The Community Centre, which is located in the heart of Alton Town Centre, serves the local community by offering a wide range of services and facilities. Maria Elliott, Alton Community Centre’s Manager, said: “Room 6 is used for our Leisure Learning Classes and the redecoration will be much appreciated by the large number of students that use this room. Alton Community Association are delighted that Laleham Health & Beauty have chosen to assist us by volunteering to paint this room. The materials have been donated by our local Wickes store
so this is truly a bringing together of local businesses to help out a local charity. We would like to pass on our sincere thanks to all the volunteers from Laleham Health & Beauty who have given up their time to make a difference to their local community centre.” Don Johnson, Operations Director from Laleham Health & Beauty, said: “As the largest employer in Alton and being based here, it has been a fantastic opportunity to work within the heart of the community and support local people. From Langrish to Cape Town On 8 March, Langrish House owner Robina Talbot-Ponsonby and her son Zander joined 35,000 other cyclists for the Cape Town Cycle Tour 2015 – the world’s largest timed cycle race. Robina set herself this enormous challenge on behalf of local charity The Rosemary Foundation Hospice at Home, of which she is a trustee. Robina said: “I flogged away at the exercise bike (in my bedroom), at ‘Spinning’ classes at the Taro and along the lanes above and around Langrish, to Winchester and back for about nine months. I reckoned I was ‘match fit’ and ready... but the Sunday before the race terrible fires started outside Cape Town. It has been an
26
absolute tragedy for the area.” Organisers decided the race would go ahead on a different route. Cape Town Cycle Tour has been held for 38 years and this was the first time the route had been altered. “Thinking I would be the slowest rider on the road, I took the left hand lane but as we climbed Hospital Hill out of Cape Town I found myself held back by others and was thrilled to discover I was not the slowest by any means! “As I turned to tell Zander how chuffed I was, I managed to ride into the wing mirror of a parked van and was thrown off my bike!”
East Hampshire Business News – July-October 2015
Despite cuts and bruises, Robina thoroughly enjoyed her experience: “As a result of the fires I never actually managed to do the full 68 miles, but I did complete the course they set us and I managed to get up all the hills without stopping once! “Thanks to the generosity of my sponsors, I raised more than £5,000.” www.rosemary-foundation.org.uk www.langrishhouse.co.uk

TLC Cares Local Charity TLC (Hospice Services at Home TLC) provides volunteers in Hampshire, Surrey and Sussex to support and befriend people with life limiting conditions that are isolated or being cared for by a family member. TLC Volunteers help those caring for a loved one by encouraging them to chat about their experiences so they can provide friendly support. Family carers save the NHS and the Government millions of hours of time and money; but those family carers can suffer from depression and quite often they feel guilty at having to ask for assistance. Thanks to Big Lottery Funding and other vital fundraising, volunteers are able to take those they support on outings and to visit relatives. Additionally, TLC is also able to provide free complementary therapies to family carers and whom

Assets of Community Value kept on a register by the District Council for five years. Once an ACV has been approved, the owner of that asset must notify the District Council of any intention to dispose of that asset, triggering a six-week interim moratorium in which local community groups are notified. During that period no sale can take place, and any interested community group can request to be treated as a bidder. Doing so will trigger a second, six-month moratorium, allowing the group time to get itself in order to prepare a bid. The Maple Inn, Buriton, is listed as an Asset of Community Value
Communities looking to safeguard their local pub may just have found another weapon for their arsenal. The Community Right To Bid, as one of three “Community Rights” introduced by the Government through the Localism Act of 2011, has afforded communities a better chance to run their much-loved local. The changes which came into
force on 6 April 2015 have given the whole process a lot more weight in the planning system.
What is it? The Community Right To Bid allows local groups to nominate local “Assets of Community Value” (ACV). Successful nominations are

Gurkha Durbar celebrate International Women’s Day International Women’s Day originated from the Suffragette movement to symbolise justice, dignity and equality. This year, The Gurkha Durbar Nepalese Restaurant in Grayshott celebrated the day on Sunday 8 March. The event was organised by Sudha Rai (the proprietor) and a total of 44 ladies of 13 different nationalities attended the lunch. Mayor Penny Bradley from Haslemere, Guest of Honour, was welcomed with a khada (a silk scarf). In her speech, the Mayor highlighted the significance of the occasion and this year’s theme, “Make It Happen”. The ladies then tucked into the sumptuous threecourse lunch. After lunch, Mrs Paddy Powell, Sudha’s friend and an experienced international teacher, gave a presentation about the school project in Western Nepal. The project is to build a girls’ hostel for the Panchakanya (Five Virgins) School in Jogimara. The hostel would give girls the opportunity to attend the school and provide them with an opportunity to have a bright, safe and rewarding future. The intent of the raffle was to raise money to fund the building of the hostel.
The raffle, which included prizes donated by businesses in Grayshott, Haslemere and Petersfield, was topped up with donations from The Gurkha Durbar and the Mayor’s Charity fund. The total amount raised that afternoon was £700. In closing the proceedings, Sudha thanked all those who had attended for making it truly enjoyable event and especially for their donations which would allow the work on the Panchakanya girls’ hostel to start. www.thegurkhadurbar.com 01428 605855 Guest of Honour Mayor Penny Bradley

Six months of success at Bordon Trading Estate Bordon Trading Estate, owned by M&G, has benefited from the recent increase in confidence in the occupier market. Following the sale of 6,000 sq. ft. in Units 19 and 20 last year, the landlord has now let Units 4-6 and 12-14, totalling over 37,000 sq. ft., to a range of tenants. Terms have also been agreed on an additional 19,000 sq. ft. across Units 8 and 9, which are under offer on a sale basis, as well as Unit 7. These deals will bring the total floor space transacted to over 60,000 sq. ft. in the last 12 months. The decision to refurbish the vacant units and the flexible disposal strategy has enabled the owner to capitalise on the improving economy and increased demand for industrial / warehouse accommodation. We now have just
2 units left: Unit 11 at 6,500 sq. ft., and Unit 15 at 15,110 sq. ft. The recent increase in occupation has transformed the estate into a dynamic hub of activity with a great range of business now thriving.

Re-Format Architects relocate to Petersfield Re-Format LLP, a design studio, currently based in Alton, will be relocating to new offices in Petersfield later this year, following the refurbishment of Buckmore Barn. Re-Format is a multi-disciplined practice specialising in high quality architecture, graphic design and construction consultancy services. Their reputation is underpinned by framework commissions, with at least 20 public sector clients including Local Authorities, County Councils and Housing Associations. The move to Petersfield was prompted by the needs of not only an expanding practice but also the advantages of Petersfield as a location, particularly being adjacent to the A3 and having a mainline rail service to Waterloo and Portsmouth. Re-Format acquired Buckmore Barn, which comprised a series of Grade II Listed redundant and
dilapidated buildings dating back to the late 18th Century, in 2011. Having obtained a subsequent planning permission to convert the barns to offices, now underway is a comprehensive development programme, which on completion will provide an exceptional and attractive office environment with on-site parking. Whilst the total office space will
amount to approximately 4,500 sq. ft., a ground floor self-contained wing of 1,700 sq. ft. will be surplus to requirements and is being marketed by agents Wadham & Isherwood. For further information please contact Chris Lock: 01252 710822 chris@wandi.co.uk
Ridgeway Office Park – a management case study In 2004 Ridgeway Land acquired 3½ acres on which it constructed 30,000 sq. ft. of offices in three two storey self-contained buildings surrounding a landscaped park setting with sufficient parking for occupiers. In 2008 Holloway Iliffe & Mitchell was instructed by Ridgeway Land to manage its private access road providing access to Ridgeway Office Park, Rotherbrook Court and the Vision 20/20 development.
Three years later they were further instructed to manage the entire Ridgeway Office Park site for all owner occupiers of the development. Since 2011, a number of cost reviews were undertaken on behalf of Ridgeway Land, resulting in significant savings for landscaping, refuse collection, alarm testing and general maintenance. More recently there have been a number of health and safety best practices implemented in relation to
parking, security and site signage. Ian Moulton of Ridgeway Land commented: “Having one agency overseeing the Estate Management makes the process much simpler. We have worked with Holloway Iliffe & Mitchell on numerous projects over the last ten years and their local knowledge as well as their expertise has worked well for us.” Source: www.hi-m.co.uk
