Hythe Aqua
Hythe Aqua (formerly Hythe Swimming Club) is based at the South Road swimming pool in Hythe and has been established since 1975. Hythe Aqua has over 500 members, with the majority under 16 years of age. We are a voluntary organisation and although all our 40+ Teachers and Coaches are qualified, they all give all their time free to the Club. This results in our fees being kept to a minimum and helps to encourage membership from all sections of the community. At Hythe we aim to attract members from 5 years of age to much older participating in a healthy lifestyle of fitness training within a friendly but competitive environment.
How do I get involved? We welcome new members, regardless of your current swimming level. The main thing to remember is that we are a friendly and welcoming bunch and always welcome new people! To get started, contact us either by telephone or via email. We will carry out a free test and either find a suitable place in our programme or put your child on an appropriate waiting list. Secretary: Mr J.Parris 01303 862353 E-Mail: family.parris13@btinternet.com
Hythe Aqua is a competitive club and membership of one of competitive sections will lead to swimming in galas, playing Water Polo matches, participating in Synchronised Swimming competitions and taking part in Masters Competitions. If you join one of the competitive sections, you will be expected to compete for the Club in the competitions and championships chosen by the Coaches. The club is growing and we are always on the lookout for new members and coaching staff; so if you live in the Shepway area please contact us. The club actively encourages interested parents to obtain both teaching and ASA official’s qualifications and in many cases can help fund the necessary training. P4

World Scout Jamboree 2019
Five local young people, from Folkestone and Hythe Scout groups, have been selected to represent their country at the 24th World Scout Jamboree next July in West Virginia, USA. The World Scout Jamboree is an educational event that brings together the world’s Scouts to promote peace and mutual understanding and to develop leadership and life skills. The five Scouts represent groups from Folkestone (Andrew Sutton), Hythe (Amy-Louise Fawcett and Benji Ames) and Cheriton (George Lock and Lily Hussey). Their journey began in November 2017, when they underwent a rigorous selection process to secure a place at the Jamboree. Once selected, their path to West Virginia was set out at a Kent Scouting event and since this initial meeting in January 2018, the five (and their families!) have been working hard to spread the good news and raising funds. The Scout Association asks each P6
young person to raise £4000, which not only supports their participation in the Jamboree, but also enables Scouts from less developed countries to attend. Some local events organised to date include: a ‘launch’ dinner dance, film nights, a family quiz evening, raffles, boot fairs, Sausage Sizzles, fund raising stalls, a Scout fete and a sponsored walk. The young people would like to thank everyone who has supported their efforts so far, with special thanks to: The Burlington Hotel, Hythe Imperial Hotel, Roger De Haan Charitable Trust, Dementia Aware Hythe, Charlier Construction, Bunnings, Folkestone Lions, Gopack, The Fountain Pub and John Radford. Particular thanks must also go to John Wren, Hythe Group Scout Leader, whose endless enthusiasm keeps everyone going! Please keep your eyes and ears open for future events that are planned over the next few months – this really is a once in a lifetime opportunity for these five local Scouts and they would appreciate any support you can give! https://mydonate.bt.com/charities/ folkestoneandhythedistrictscoutcouncil Charity No: 00303385

Local Artist: Hayley Restall
We hear from local artist, Hayley Restall, who very kindly provided our front cover this edition. Hayley exhibits throughout the year in the local area, and also has a beautiful 2019 Calendar available to purchase now. I moved to Hythe three years ago, and since then much of my work has been inspired by the local environment, with pebbles, sea, boats and Martello Towers making regular appearances. I’m always trying to paint pictures that don’t feature sea or water, but they just never hold my interest in the way the coast does, and subsequently I have a large pile of rejected half-paintings in my studio. Occasionally, though, I can tear myself away from the coastal work, and recently I’ve been illustrating the zodiac and the diary I wrote when I was ten. Because my work has so many layers, I tend to have at least three on the go at once, working in rotation. I work in acrylic a lot, because it dries quickly and I’m always impatient to get to the next layer. The mixedzmedia aspect of my work comes from a huge pile
P10
of 1970s craft magazines. It’s the same magazine my mum used to read when I was little, and every now and again I come across something she made for me, which I love. I exhibit locally throughout the year, with local art societies and the hART Art Group. My next event is the Old Pool Studio Christmas Fair, 17th &18th November at 4 Cliff Road, Hythe CT21 5XA. I also run my own website selling original art, prints, cards and calendars. My 2019 calendar, featuring several local scenes, is available for preorder now at www.hayleyrestall.com.

Walter Tull: His Life and Legacy Folkestone Museum is delighted to present an exhibition celebrating the life and legacy of Walter Tull. Born in Folkestone in 1888 to a British mother and Bajan father, Walter was one of the first black outfield footballers to play at the highest level, for Tottenham Hotspur, Northampton Town and Clapton. He also signed for Rangers of Glasgow in February, 1917 intending to play for them after the war. In December 1914 Walter readily enlisted with the 17th (Service) Battalion, Middlesex Regiment, otherwise known as the Footballer’s Battalion. Defying the military regulation that restricted the rank of officer to those of ‘pure European descent’, he became the first black officer to lead white men in battle. Tragically, like so many, Walter was killed in action on 25th March 1918, a month before his 30th birthday. To coincide with Armistice centenary commemorations in November and Black History Month in October 2018, 100 years after Walter’s death, Folkestone Museum will bring Walter’s story to a new generation. Owing to the generous loan of objects, letters, diaries and photographs, this will be the first extensive exhibition about Walter Tull. His early formative years in Folkestone, his character forming decade at The Children’s Home and Orphanage in Bethnal Green, his footballing and military careers and his enduring legacy will all be explored. The exhibition will also investigate what it meant to be part of a mixed-heritage family in 19th century Britain, over 70 years before the Empire Windrush brought larger numbers of Caribbean British Citizen migrants to the UK. Some of the lesser-known aspects of Walter’s life such as his father’s connection to Folkestone and the lives of his equally pioneering siblings will also feature. This exhibition has been made possible by the generous loan of archival material from the Finlayson Family Archive, Action for Children (The Children’s Home and Orphanage), the National Army Museum, and Tottenham P12
Hotspur, and with the kind assistance of Walter Tull’s biographer, Phil Vasili. A programme of talks and workshops for adults and children will compliment the exhibition. Details will be available on the Museum website. Folkestone Museum is bringing Walter’s story to the children of the district through free outreach workshops for schools run by singer/songwriter Randolph Matthews, with the support of Folkestone & Hythe District Council, Kent County Council, and The Roger de Haan Charitable Trust. Workshops are available for KS 2 and 3. If you are a teacher and would like to book a workshop, please email museum@folkestone-tc.gov.uk

Cadet Unit A local cadet unit in Folkestone is raising awareness to encourage young people to take part. By joining, it offers huge potential for the younger generation to be involved in something that helps them stand out from others and gives them a positive and confident start in their young lives. The unit is open to young people aged between 10-18, regardless of sex, religion or race, and within the bounds of safety to themselves and others, and open to those with special needs. The Cadet unit has been established in Folkestone since May 1972 starting as Training Ship Europa as sea cadets then changing style and syllabuses to the now formed Kent (Marine) Cadet Force.
The training they have adapted originated from a Ex Royal Marine officer who devised a challenging course, so cadets could acheive a Green Beret, although not a Royal Marine Cadet unit. All of the instructors and staff have CRB (Criminal Record Bureau checks) which allow them to work with children. Risk assessments are carried out on all activities and we have child protection procedures and policies in place. For more information or to get involved, call 01303 226841 or visit www.kmcf.co.uk

Enrol in Cello Lessons Local residents have an exciting opportunity to enroll for Cello lessons by experienced teacher Anne Smith.
heard anything like it. Working for the BBC, Ronald was recognised as one of the top British performers of the time.
We had the pleasure of meeting with Anne to hear more about her history and teaching style.
Happily married, and with a young daughter, the pair often visited Hythe as Ronald loved to swim in the sea. It was on one of these visits they came across a cottage for sale, and it soon became their home.
A long-term resident of Hythe, Anne has a very interesting life story. Married to a famous concert pianist, Anne herself decided as a young girl that she wanted to play the cello, and has remained passionate about it ever since. Her first opportunity to learn came about whilst walking with her mother, aged about 6. Whilst walking, they met a professional musician who played the cello herself. Meeting a few more times, the lady offered to teach Anne to play the cello herself. With a close knit family, including her parents, brother and sister, they moved house often, but Anne’s commitment to the cello remained a constant. As a young lady, Anne attended a concert with a trio of a cellist, pianist and wind player, which included the famous cello player and performer, William Pleeth. Inspired by him, Anne then wrote to him, asking if she may see him to play cello to him. He agreed, and suggested she took her teachers certificate. Taking his advice, her teaching career began. Anne went on to teach in a number of roles, including a Council run project in Barking, which involved travelling around the local schools there, giving concerts and encouraging the students, who may not have had the opportunity otherwise, to play instruments. Anne enjoyed this project very much, and continued for some time beyond the initial project and funding had ended. In her next role, she met Derek Hyde, the Head of Music at Nonington College, where she went on to teach. It was through Derek that she met Ronald Smith, whom she went on to marry. Hearing him play in concert, she has never P20
Anne continued to teach, including roles at both Folkestone and Dover Grammar schools, and remains passionate about giving others the opportunity to learn to play the Cello. If you’d like to get in touch, please do.

Guttering Clearing And Maintenance Autumn - one of the most beautiful times of year as golden leaves fall from trees. Not so great for your gutters. These will soon fill up with those beautiful leaves and as the autumn storms begin to come in they could cause a blockage preventing rainwater from draining away as it should. For just £45 you can have your gutters fully cleared and cleaned. And if there are any faults with brackets or the guttering itself, this can easily be fixed at the same time for a small additional fee. You’d be surprised what else can be found in gutters, so don’t rest on your laurels if you’re not surrounded by trees – moss build up that has fallen from the roof, general dirt, bird nests and even tennis balls can block the gutter and prevent it working effectively. Gutter clearing and maintenance will also clear off your flat roofs and check your downpipes for blockages. For a professional, reliable and friendly service contact us today – we can also do general
maintenance and repairs on your home. We’re fully insured and you can trust us to do the job well. Call: 01303 230913 Visit: www.gutterclearkent.com Serving Folkestone, Dover, Ashford, Romney Marsh, Elham Valley, Sellindge and surrounding villages.

Folkestone Book Festival 16th – 25th November 2018 This year, we open the festival and the Christmas festivities with the inspiring novelist Kit de Waal. Half Irish, half Jamaican, her novels are beautifully humane and moving. The 2018 Folkestone Book Festival will be the most international ever with an Indian Day, an American Day and a Turkish night, not to be missed. There will be an eclectic range of talks from healthy eating to remaining sane in an increasingly difficult world, fighting plastic to fighting tax evasion, graphology, astronomy, politics, philosophy, art, and of course comedy. This will be my biggest festival with 50 events (including a fabulous kids’ programme). It should make you think, travel, discover new ideas, enjoy yourselves and want to continue the conversation. It will also be my seventh and last book festival and I want to thank you all for
having been such a great and appreciative audience. I hope this year won’t disappoint! Geraldine D’Amico Curator, Folkestone Book Festival For further information and to book tickets: Visit: www.folkestonebookfest.com Call: 01303 760750 Pop in: The Quarterhouse, 49 Tontine St, Folkestone CT20 1JT

First Folkestone Channel Triathlon Is A Super Success!
The first Channel Triathlon took to the water and roads of Folkestone recently, organised by Joe Sullivan of Folkestone Channel Rotary Club and professionally managed by TriSpirit Events of Ashford. The response of the athletes was excellent and Sunday 8th September 2019 has already been reserved for the next one. Please put it in your diaries now whether you’ll be a competitor or a spectator. 200 enthusiasts of all standards from beginners to GB age-group athletes swam, cycled and ran. We were fortunate to have the use of the Harbour Arm which is a fantastic setting and this enabled us to also showcase the major developments in the Harbour area, the Town and our amazing coastal and countryside scenery during the swim, cycle and run phases. The wind and sea conditions were rougher than forecast but the athletes took to the water like ducks with the safety protection of the canoeists (mostly from the Folkestone Rowing Club) and with the support of the Folkestone Rescue Boat. Triathlons are essentially about challenging yourself and many swimmers were exhilarated by being able to swim in these sea conditions knowing they were being safely watched over. The same drive and commitment was evident in the cycle and run phases and there were some powerful, personal achievements as athletes conquered the route and their tiredness. Organiser Joe Sullivan said “What a brilliant event with super athletes. Channel Rotary has raised approaching £5,000 for the Celia Blakey Cancer Care Unit at the William Harvey Hospital and the Shepway Sports Trust which both do amazing work in our community. Together with P26
the money raised by the athletes for their own personal charities we belief some £10,000 has been raised. We are immensely grateful to everyone who helped to make the Folkestone Channel Tri such a success: Tri Spirit Events, the athletes, our magnificent marshals, Channel Rotary members and friends, volunteers and sponsors including County, District and Town Councils, Roger De Haan Charitable Trust, Folkestone Harbour Company and all the local businesses who generously supported us.” Quotes from our Triathletes “People have clearly gone to an awful lot of trouble to make us feel so welcome” “I want another one of these medals, so see you again next year!” “Great day at Channel Triathlon Folkestone today, challenging course and tough sea swim. Thanks to all the organisers and volunteers for doing a great job in their first year.” “Many thanks for the triathlon on Sunday. The Medway Tri competitors enjoyed it immensely.” Honours Board Sprint Tri: 1st Mark Hooker (Maidstone Harriers Tri 1:16:40), 2nd Yiannis Chrisodoulou (Adalta CC), 3rd Trevor Back (Tri Spoke) Standard Tri: 1st Carlo Nebuloni (2:29:59) 2nd Azon Belarre (Tri Spoke), 3rd David Moffat Sprint Aquabike: 1st Nigel Main (1:05:09), 2nd Catherine Bray, 3rd Tanya Vice Standard Aquabike: 1st Claire Howard (Tunbridge Wells Tri Club 2:03:21), 2nd Keith Bellingham, 3rd Paul Garrity Channel Rotary works closely with the local community providing funds and hands-on help. Help raise money for the Air Ambulance
Does your coffee machine use pods? If so, you can recycle them and raise money for our lifesaving work at the same time! The programme is run by a network of volunteers who have set up dedicated collection points at public locations across the country. The volunteers coordinate the collection and send the Tassimo, L’OR and Kenco waste to TerraCycle for recycling raising money for
charity in the process. We are so grateful that Adam Hunter has very kindly chosen to give up his own time to organise this scheme and raise funds for the Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance. So far Adam has sent an incredible 395,798 pods and outer foil packaging for recycling, raising a sensational £4,108 for KSS Air Ambulance in the process.
Please take your coffee pods to the following locations to raise money for the air ambulance: - Hythe Swimming Pool (in reception) - CT21 6AR - Morrisons Folkestone (in entrance lobby) - CT19 5JU

Folkestone Gospel Singers At it’s heart is, and always will be, the 100% commitment we have from everyone involved. We’re a very friendly and welcoming choir and enjoy singing gospel and contemporary songs together. You can develop your confidence and vocal technique while having fun and making new friends. We perform regularly in the community.
Happy 10th Birthday to Folkestone Gospel Singers (Formerly The Mission Gospel Choir).
No experience or ability to read music is necessary. We offer no charge ‘taster sessions’ most months during the year, so that anyone who enjoys singing can come along to a regular weekly Tuesday evening rehearsal and find out more about us and why our members say “you’re a fantastic choir” “I love belonging to it” “my week’s not complete until I’ve been to a rehearsal “. Here’s to another 10 years!
The Mission Gospel Choir started as a very small group in 2008. This month reemerging as Folkestone Gospel Singers; we’re very proud to be celebrating our 10th anniversary in Autumn 2018. Over the years we’ve adapted to the needs of the members and regular supporters of our choir as much as possible because they make us what we are - a very special, well established community choir.

Each row, column and 3x3 box must contain the numbers 1 to 9 just once. This can be done by applying logic - you don’t have to guess!

The Red Box Project Where have Red Boxes been set up locally? The Red Box Project has been set up locally to cover schools located in Cheriton, Folkestone, Hythe and New Romney.
The Red Box Project currently have donation points at these places: • Hythe Salvation Army Church & Community Centre • The Salvation Army, Folkestone. • Saffron Sun, Hythe High Street
What is the Red Box Project? Welcome to the Red Box Project, an initiative that quietly ensures that no young woman misses out on her education because of her period. We are 100% community driven and run by individuals across the UK. We place constantly stocked Red Boxes of sanitary wear in schools for young women to access, aiming to reach those who may not be able to afford these vital items.
• Saffron Hair, Hythe High Street • The Community Network Shop (next to One Stop) Cheriton High Street. • Folkestone Wellbeing Centre • Folkestone Quarterhouse
All donations are most welcome. Further information can be found at:
www.redboxproject.org
The Story The Red Box Project was initiated in March 2017 by three friends who wanted to give young women in their local area access to sanitary products. After reading about ‘Period Poverty‘ in the news, they were angered at the idea that young women were missing out on their education because they couldn’t afford the products they needed during their period. They decided to take action and contacted several secondary schools to ask if a constantly stocked box of sanitary wear would be welcomed. The feedback from teachers was that the issue was real and the resource was needed. Recognising that the need was nationwide, they invited individuals from across the country to be a part of this movement and the response was overwhelming. From Scotland to Cornwall, people began to group together and set up Red Boxes of tampons and towels in their local schools. They fundraised, collected, had craft sales and donations drives, all to make sure their boxes never became empty. We make your business, everyone’s business!
How do I advertise in the handbooks? Arranging for your advert to be included within the handbook is simple. Simply call us on 01303 266755 to book your space. Then, if you have a print ready advert, email it to us at info@eastkenthandbooks.com
Don’t have a print ready advert? No problem, email us your logo (if you have one) and the wording you’d like to include, and our graphic designer will put an advert together for you to use in the handbooks. He does a great job, and it’s free if you are advertising for more than 1 edition (which is how most people book, as your phone calls will increase as people get used to seeing your advert within the handbooks).
Why advertise within the handbooks? We’ve been publishing the handbooks for over 10 years now, and most of our advertisers have their advert included in every edition; why? Because it works - having their advert in the handbooks gets their telephones ringing.
We deliver the handbooks directly through the door of the local community. That means, when our readers are looking for a product or service, your phone number is right there in front of them, in their home. People like things to be straight forward, so if they’re looking for a company to do some work for them, they’ll be very likely to call the phone number they have already in front of them - particularly because our readers know, like and trust the handbooks. By association, they feel the same way about the company’s that advertise with us. Some of the feedback we get from our readers includes: “I wanted to call and say how useful the handbook is. It’s an excellent read and I know that I can feel confident using any of the advertisers in it” “We’ve just moved to the area and have found the handbook so useful - really pleased we’ve got it through the door” “Thank you for your recent article on jobs around the home - I was able to tick a number of things off my to do list using the companies you recommended.” And from our advertisers: “I have been advertising in the handbooks for a long while now, and would like to confirm I get more calls from it than I ever did from my newspaper advertising. I think it’s because people keep the handbooks in their homes, whereas the newspapers get recycled. Whatever it is, it’s working - please keep my advert running” “The handbook has been marvellous for our business; some of our best customers have come from there”
How do I get in touch?
“Doing business without advertising is like winking at a girl in the dark. You know what you’re doing but nobody else does.” - Stuart H. Britt
