Editors Letter Hello Everyone,
Turning to 2018...
Welcome to the latest edition of the handbook.
If you’re involved in a local community event or sponsored activity, do get in touch in plenty of time before the event so that we can help to spread the word and make it as successful as possible.
We’ve got plenty to keep you busy (and in the warm!) within the current edition, from puzzles, articles and details of what’s going on around you, to local clubs and societies you might like to join. We’ve got a helpful article on jobs around the home to carry out at this time of year, details of an excellent swimming class for those with little ones, and so much more. We really do hope you enjoy it. In each edition of the handbook, we always include a range of other articles about local news, charities and useful information something for everyone we hope. And if there’s a particular item or subject you’d like to see in future editions of the handbook please do just let us know.
And if you run a local business, but don’t currently have your advert included in the handbook, why not give it a try? We’ve been producing the handbooks for over 10 years now, and our readers will always let you know where they’ve got your details from, so let us help get your phone ringing - just give us a call on 01303 266755 for a no obligation chat. With best wishes,
Tuija

Join The Number 1 Baby Swim School
Did you know you could take your baby swimming from the day they are born? Imagine seeing your 4-year-old child swim 10 metres confidently. If you live by the sea, a river, or a canal, swimming is a vital life skill and you can teach it from birth. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to worry that you have to wait until all your baby’s vaccinations are completed. After spending so many months suspended in fluid in the womb, it’s no surprise babies have a natural affinity for water. They even feel more at home in water than on land, but this confidence can soon diminish. This is one of the main reasons we believe it’s best to start swimming as early as possible — even from birth.
learning skills and increase their level of understanding. Lessons also have therapeutic benefits for children with special needs. Our lessons run locally at the Hythe Imperial and The Beacon. They are held in a small, warm pool, where both the child and adult will be comfortable and relaxed. These calm and relaxing swimming lessons, which include underwater swimming, not only teach your child to swim, but they promote bonding and enhance the way babies and toddlers learn other skills too. They build their confidence, enhance their coordination and motor skills, develop P4

Meet The Beautiful Game’s Slower Cousin Anyone can play, but in particular it’s a great way to keep fit for older people, people with health problems like obesity or diabetes sufferers, or those who have had to give up full-paced football due to injury. It improves fitness levels, gets people involved in social activity and generally improves health and wellbeing. The Folkestone Walking Football Group is led by Steve Rich at Folkestone Sports Centre. It’s just £3 per session and anyone over the age of 18 is welcome to turn up and play. Booking isn’t required. Sessions are on Thursdays:
Everyone has heard of the beautiful game, football. Not so many have heard of walking football, but it’s exactly what is says it is. Football. Just at a much slower pace. And it’s growing
in popularity worldwide with a Euros tournament planned in London in 2019 and a World Cup in 2020. As well as being slower paced, the rules are also different. It’s a non-contact sport, so no slide tackles or shouldering, balls are not allowed above the head, so no headers, a kick in takes the place of a throwin, and there’s no offside.
•
12-1pm for slower paced players with disabilities or suffering from healthrelated problems
•
8-9pm is more competitive, aimed at more able players
To find out more about this national phenomenon, which is as structured as its cousin, visit www.walkingfootball.com and www.walkingfootballunited.co.uk For more information about the Folkestone group call Steve Rich on 07990 976462.

Guttering Clearing And Maintenance Autumn - one of the most beautiful times of year as golden leaves fall from trees. Not so great for your gutters. These will soon fill up with those beautiful leaves and as the autumn storms begin to come in they could cause a blockage preventing rainwater from draining away as it should. For just £45 you can have your gutters fully cleared and cleaned. And if there are any faults with brackets or the guttering itself, this can easily be fixed at the same time for a small additional fee. You’d be surprised what else can be found in gutters, so don’t rest on your laurels if you’re not surrounded by trees – moss build up that has fallen from the roof, general dirt, bird nests and even tennis balls can block the gutter and prevent it working effectively.

Jobs to get your house Winter-ready too. Any leaks should also be fixed before winter. Is your roof, rendering and pointing in good condition? As the autumn brings more driving rain, it can creep into little crevices you might not have noticed were there causing an internal damp problem. Make sure all your pointing is good and that there are no cracks in the rendering.
People often call in the ‘trades’ when a problem arises, but planning your home maintenance through the year, dividing jobs into seasonal must-dos, can save you money in the long term. Here is our handy guide for what jobs are best to do now, to get your home winter-ready. Get your boiler serviced When the weather gets cold you want the heating to work. So before it gets to the point you need it on regularly, it’s best to get is checked. It is recommended that you should have a boiler serviced annually. If you don’t, now is a good time to start. Check your radiators aren’t leaking and ask your plumber to bleed any air out of them if you can’t do it yourself.
You don’t want the lead to lift in the wind and cause leaks. It’s always best to get this done before the winter, otherwise, come the spring, you’ll have greater expense on remedial work to stained walls and ceilings inside. Pipes and overflows Check that all the overflows aren’t dripping, if they are then they need to be repaired. Left running they will cause dampness and may freeze. Make sure any external pipes are protected from the cold
Take a quick look at your roof to make sure there are no slipped tiles or slates – the last thing you want in the winter is to try and get a roof leak fixed. Got an open fire or wood burner? Make sure you have your chimneys and flues swept once a year, ideally before the heating season, and get a certificate of chimney sweeping. And if you have a gas fire that exhausts through the chimney flue this should be checked too as these can become blocked – albeit infrequently. Montgomery Vet Clinic Q & A Q: I have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who seems to have developed very waxy, smelly ears? What should I do? It sounds as if your Cavalier may have an ear infection- these are very common in dogs with long and hairy ears. You will probably need to take your dog to the vet as he ought to have his ears checked with an otoscope. He may need medicated drops. After the infection has cleared it might be a good idea to use special dog ear wash in his ears regularly to prevent further problems. After you put cleaner in your dog’s ears it can get messy so stand back!
Q: We have just bought a pet rabbit for our children. Do we need to vaccinate him? If so why? Vets recommend that rabbits are vaccinated against 2 diseases- myxomatosis and Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD). These are
available in a combined vaccine. Both these diseases are fatal to rabbits and there is not a good treatment for either disease. Both diseases are in the wild rabbit population so it is easy for your rabbit to pick these diseases up if he or she is outside. We often see these diseases in unvaccinated pet rabbits in the summer months. The vaccines are very effective and are available at your vet. This year a new strain of VHD (VHD-2) has come to the UK and it has been the cause of several deaths here in Kent. There is now a new VHD-2 vaccine that vets can import. We would recommend that you vaccinate your rabbit both with the normal myxomatosis/ VHD combination vaccine and the new VHD-2 vaccine. Clive Munns, Montgomery Vet Clinic, Smeeth

What is Counselling? have value and in my experience it isn’t the model, but the relationship between you is the fundamental driving force of the work, so my advice: Meet with the Counsellor and ultimately go for someone that you feel comfortable with. It’s a bit like buying a pair of shoes, you might well be a size 6, but that doesn’t mean that every size 6 shoe will fit and be comfortable.
Nick Langley (MNCS Accred) runs a private Counselling practice in Hythe, offering traditional face to face, as well as Walking Therapy. Also a qualified Teacher, he is a trainer at Thoros - Centre for Therapy Learning in Lyddon-Sea, whose Diploma has recently been accredited by the National Counselling Society. Within his column, he will explain various approaches to Counselling, and how they can be of benefit. What is Counselling? In a nutshell Therapeutic Counselling offers you a regular, confidential space to discuss anything that you want to. Channel Rotary Club (Folkestone)
Channel rotary makes major donations to headway east kent and hypo hounds Channel Rotary Club (Folkestone) has donated a total of £3,500 to two remarkable charities that do amazing work in our local community. They are Hypo Hounds (based in Tenterden) and Headway East Kent (based in Folkestone). The money was raised in the Club’s eighth annual Charity Bike Ride on 30th July this year when several hundred cyclists from all over the South East enjoyed a fun family day on Romney Marsh raising money for charity. Since it started, the Bike Ride has raised over £40,000 for good causes. Hypo Hounds (www. hypohounds.co.uk) is Kent’s very own Diabetic Alert Assistance Dog Charity and it is taking Kent and the dog world by storm. Not only can it boast of training 13 dogs for clients with brittle Type 1 Diabetes but also of winning several National Awards this year including Crufts Friends for Life, PDSA Heroic Hound,
and the Gold Charity Mark for outstanding contributions to Kent residents. The charity trains pet dogs owned by clients who are at constant risk of diabetic attacks due to profound changes in their blood sugar levels. The dogs identify impending attacks using scent and behavioural changes and alert the client. This avoids both acute and long-term complications and recurrent hospital admissions with significant cost implications. The dog trainers have the highest possible training credentials, being Home Office approved. The specialist dog training is very expensive (£8,000 each) and Hypo Hounds requires significant charitable donation to maintain its service. We all know the health benefits of having an animal in the house such as improvement in mood, relaxation, blood pressure and cardiovascular risk so in this case a dog is certainly “a man’s best friend”.
Headway East Kent (www. headwayeastkent.org.uk ) is an independent charity that promotes wider understanding of all aspects of brain injuries and provides social rehabilitation to adults with acquired brain injury as well as offering support to their families and carers. It has five day centres in East Kent at Folkestone, Ashford, Canterbury, Dover and Thanet supporting over 125 day-centre clients and 300 outreach clients. The centres provide a range of activities to assist learning of new skills, improve self-esteem and social interaction, and develop interests and aims leading to personal fulfilment and participation in the community. Two very important aspects in delivering these aims are mindfulness yoga and fitness. Presenting the donations at Headway’s Folkestone Day Centre, Channel Rotary President Alan Myers said “Channel Rotary is very pleased to donate these significant sums of money to two such deserving local charities. We applaud the remarkable work they do which improves the lives of their clients, families and carers”. Responding, Hypo Hounds CEO Jane Pearman said “We’re delighted with Channel Rotary’s support. The money will be invaluable in providing 35 specialist dog training sessions.” Paula McCormack, Day Centre Facilitator of Folkestone Headway, said “This very generous donation by Channel Rotary will pay for much needed tutors to provide specific photographic, keep fit, numeracy and literacy training for our clients.“

We make your business, everyone’s business!
How do I advertise in the handbooks? Arranging for your advert to be included within the handbook is simple. Simply call us on 01303 266755 to book your space. Then, if you have a print ready advert, email it to us at info@eastkenthandbooks.com
Don’t have a print ready advert? No problem, email us your logo (if you have one) and the wording you’d like to include, and our graphic designer will put an advert together for you to use in the handbooks. He does a great job, and it’s free if you are advertising for more than 1 edition (which is how most people book, as your phone calls will increase as people get used to seeing your advert within the handbooks).
Why advertise within the handbooks? We’ve been publishing the handbooks for over 10 years now, and most of our advertisers have their advert included in every edition; why? Because it works - having their advert in the handbooks gets their telephones ringing.
We deliver the handbooks directly through the door of the local community. That means, when our readers are looking for a product or service, your phone number is right there in front of them, in their home. People like things to be straight forward, so if they’re looking for a company to do some work for them, they’ll be very likely to call the phone number they have already in front of them - particularly because our readers know, like and trust the handbooks. By association, they feel the same way about the company’s that advertise with us. Some of the feedback we get from our readers includes: “I wanted to call and say how useful the handbook is. It’s an excellent read and I know that I can feel confident using any of the advertisers in it” “We’ve just moved to the area and have found the handbook so useful - really pleased we’ve got it through the door” “Thank you for your recent article on jobs around the home - I was able to tick a number of things off my to do list using the companies you recommended.” And from our advertisers: “I have been advertising in the handbooks for a long while now, and would like to confirm I get more calls from it than I ever did from my newspaper advertising. I think it’s because people keep the handbooks in their homes, whereas the newspapers get recycled. Whatever it is, it’s working - please keep my advert running” “The handbook has been marvellous for our business; some of our best customers have come from there”
How do I get in touch?
“Doing business without advertising is like winking at a girl in the dark. You know what you’re doing but nobody else does.” - Stuart H. Britt
