On page 16 we have more details about our cover artist, Nigel Parsons, and his stall at the Malthouse, Hythe. Do pop along and visit if you can. If you’re involved in a local community event or sponsored activity, do get in touch in plenty of time before the event so that we can help to spread the word and make it as sucessful as possible. And if you’re a local business, but don’t currently have your details included in the handbook, why not give it a try? Just give us a ring, or pop into the office, for a no obligation chat. are welcome to bring your own work. This year we all decorated shoes at one of the workshops, to be hung at the exhibition. Always something different that you perhaps wouldn’t try at home. They are a good chance to get together, paint or draw and have a cup of tea and a chat. A full programme is available on joining. The membership fee also includes a 10% discount at Artwrite, Hythe and Rye shops. The HAS also holds several ‘Plein Air’ or outdoor workshops and a demonstration and a cream tea to finish the year off, which is usually held at Lympne Castle in June for a, very minimal, extra charge. Enjoy singing? We’re a local choir who this year are fund raising for the local military cadets. New members are always most welcome. Formed in 2015, the choir have performed at multiple military and community fundraising events, including the overseas charity for children’s education in Burkina Faso, the Pilgrim’s Hospice, the Ideal Home Exhibition for the Not Forgotten Association, and attended their annual Garden Party at Buckingham Palace to chaperone veterans. We sing at a lot of venues and not only enjoy singing the war time favourites but also a few more modern and musical hits. Our repertoire includes Motown, The Jersey Boys but also Ed Sheeran and the Beatles hits.

The Closet at William Harvey Hospital The Closet was set up a year ago now and we provide clothing to needy patients who have nothing of their own when they are being discharged from hospital. A wide range of people benefit from The Closet, as people find themselves in hospital without their own things for a number of reasons. Examples of those we help may be the older patient who is being transferred from hospital to a new residential setting or nursing home (and have no clothes to wear of their own), the homeless person who needs a few extra items before they go on their way, as well as those who have been transferred out of their area for urgent treatment. How does The Closet work? The way it works is that I take donations of clothes in from all sorts of people, mainly colleagues, friends, neighbours etc, and we advertise on local neighbourhood social media pages to spread the word. Once donations come in I take them home, inspect them, launder and steam them, and then place them into the Closet for use by our patients. We only use the very high quality clothing that is donated and we are scrupulous in our selection. Since July last year it has grown a little and there are two smaller closets in operation on the medical floor and in A and E.
How is The Closet funded? We have been lucky enough to have raised a few hundred pounds recently this year via Waitrose in Hythe coin drop boxes at the tills, which enabled us to purchase brand new clothing and much needed underwear. Our Trust charity the Friends of William Harvey have also been very kind in gifting us cash donations to boost our purchasing ability. Primarily The Closet is voluntary lead and funded, and we are always looking to raise money and indeed awareness as much as possible in order to develop our project and keep it sustainable for as long as possible. How can I donate? Donations can be dropped into the donation boxes at William Harvey Hospital if you are visiting there. Alternatively, donations can be collected. Brand new underwear is always especially welcome. For further information, or to donate, please visit our Facebook page titled The Closet #clothesforpatients and follow what we’ve been up to over the past twelve months. We also have a Twitter page, same name as above. Alternatively, please contact the handbook either by phone on 01303 266755 or email info@eastkenthandbooks.com and we will put you in touch with the organisers directly.

Meet the Artist
Click ‘n’ Stitch Click ‘n’ Stitch is the home of Kent (Hythe) based photographer Nigel Parsons and craft textile designer Carol Dixon. It is a unique and exciting combination of ‘art’ that challenges concepts and minds, whilst expanding the visual look and feel of landscapes / seascapes / towns / animals / people and objects to a different level. Working together for over four years, they have a strong, complimentary and ever changing portfolio of work that receives critical acclaim, some of which are commissions and ‘one off’ works. You will find them at numerous craft and trade shows throughout the year and have also undertaken exhibitions and workshops supporting P16
charities and local endeavours. Click ‘n’ Stitch also now has a stall at the Malthouse in the High Street, Hythe, open 9.30am-5pm Friday and Saturdays.
Nigel Parsons Born on a farm in Hampshire, Nigel has always enjoyed taking photographs starting in his teenage years. After college and University, the main part of his career has been working in commercial business as Head of Global e-business / Marketing and Project Management and consultancy, including for the FTSE 100 registered company Smiths Group. This ability to identify customer needs and wants obviously held him in good stead for taking photographs that attracted people’s attention.
Please mention “The Handbook” when responding to adverts
Whilst travelling extensively, the joy of photography never left his side, so much so that with more time becoming available Nigel took specialist courses on photography to ‘Masters’ level with adult education. Particularly strong in Landscapes, Seascapes, Street Photography, Photo-shoots and post editing / management, he will also undertake specialist commissions on request. He has now lived in Hythe for over 20years. Always ready to look for a different twist to a photograph, the key Nigel says is.”…to bring mood and feeling into a photograph rather than simply stereotyping, because as most good photographers know, it is not the camera or the technology that really counts, but the eye for a good shot ..” Nigel

Get your hearing checked by a professional
An interview with Hearbase audiologist, Nikki Davis
Hearbase have supported my development and in the last 5 years they helped me to qualify as an audiologist.
What is an audiologist?
What are the first signs of a hearing problem?
An audiologist is a clinical health care professional responsible for helping those who have problems with their hearing. It’s a highly qualified role, and each day an audiologist could be assessing and fitting hearing aids, providing ear protection, tinnitus support and advising on balance and wax removal.
How long have you been at Hearbase? I have been at Hearbase for over 7 years now and I enjoy my work, especially meeting and helping so many people from Folkestone and Hythe, old and young. P20
Some of the early signs are when you struggle to keep up with conservation in noisy places, when your family tell you the TV is too loud, or when you have difficulty hearing people clearly. If you experience ringing or buzzing in your ears, or head, or a feeling of blockage, these can also be early signs of hearing loss.
Why should I have my hearing tested? Not being able to hear, seriously impacts your quality of life, not to mention talking
with friends, family and others. I recommend if you show any of these early signs, you should get it checked. If you are concerned about someone close to you who struggles to hear, speak to them about getting a free hearing test and why not join them to offer support if they need a little bit of encouragement?
Why should I go to Hearbase? Well, to start, our hearing tests are completely free. This isn’t unique to us, you can get your hearing tested elsewhere, but
Please mention “The Handbook” when responding to adverts
as we are expert audiologists, if we find anything of concern after your free hearing test, we will point you in the direction of specialist services quickly. We are a really friendly bunch of people and our focus is to listen and help you to manage your hearing.
How should I look after my hearing? If you notice any change to your hearing, large or small, then always get it checked. This is important however old or young you are. If you
work in a noisy place or have a history of hearing loss in your family, have a hearing test, it only takes 30 minutes. Call us on 01303 254416 and book your free hearing test at Hearbase today!

Folkestone Channel Rotary Club Folkestone Channel Triathlon is a super success! The second Channel Triathlon took to the water and roads of Folkestone coordinated by Joe Sullivan of Folkestone Channel Rotary Club and professionally managed by TriSpirit Events of Ashford. The response of the athletes was excellent and plans are already in hand for the next one in September 2020. 200 enthusiasts of all standards from beginners to fully experienced swam, cycled and ran. Based on the fantastic Harbour Arm, the Channel Tri showcases the major developments in the Harbour area, the Town and our amazing coastal and countryside scenery during the swim, cycle and run phases. The wind and sea conditions were fine and the athletes took to the water like ducks with the safety protection of canoeists from the Folkestone Rowing Club and Folkestone Rescue Service. Triathlons are essentially about challenging yourself and many swimmers were exhilarated swimming in these sea conditions knowing they were being safely watched over. The same drive and commitment was evident in the cycle and run phases and there were some powerful, personal achievements as athletes conquered the route and their tiredness. Channel Rotary President Edwin Beddy and Coordinator Joe Sullivan were delighted with the outcome. “This has been a wonderful
event and has built on the success of last year. The weather was good and the sea was comfortable despite the wind. We’ve had many excellent comments about the event, location and organisation including: • “It was right up there with the very best Tri events”. • “Superbly well organised and marshalled.” • “Brilliant event. Great value for money”. “We are immensely grateful to everyone who helped to make the Folkestone Channel Tri such a success including the athletes, our magnificent marshals, Channel Rotary members and friends, volunteers, the professional managers Tri Spirit Events and NE Timing and our sponsors including County, District and Town Councils, Roger De Haan Charitable Trust, Folkestone Harbour Company and all the local businesses who so generously supported us. Together with the sponsorship raised by the athletes for their own charities, we expect the Channel Tri has raised several thousand pounds with Channel Rotary particularly supporting the Pilgrims Hospices and the Shepway Sports Trust.”

01303 266755 Talking in the Shed It is a well documented fact that talking relieves stress and helps mental well being. It is also recognised that 25% of British adults will experience a mental health issue every year. Brian Beecroft has just opened a new therapy centre in Hythe, called Talking in the Shed. He offers Acceptance Commitment Therapy “ACT”. When he decided to move into counselling he wanted to be a little bit different. Mainly because having seen with his own eyes how counselling doesn’t seem to work for everyone. He was interested to explore why this was, he found that people often felt like they were being told what to do. A bit like going to the doctors and being told take this medicine. Mental health it is a very different though, after all we are all different, we all do things differently and we all have individual issues. There is not one answer. Brian was drawn towards Acceptance Commitment Therapy because is a very flexible process and puts the emphasis on the client finding their own path. Yes they
will need guidance, and he sees himself as more as a guide rather than someone telling the client what to do. This is quite different from most other counselling services. Brian also found that often the client didn’t like or connect with their therapist. I’m sure this isn’t because their therapist was a bad person, they just didn’t know about them. Brian feels that you need to know a bit about him, and this is why he is open about himself. This is normally frowned upon, but he feel this is an important aspect of the client therapist relationship. Brian has a background in teaching and he sees his role more as a teacher rather than someone giving counsel. After all someone that give counsel would normally be consider the expert. Yes Brian is a qualified therapist, but you are the expert on you and you need to be in control. Littlestone Lifeboat Littlestone volunteers spend 24 hours at sea in a life raft to raise vital funds. This year’s Littlestone Lifeboat Station’s Emergency Services Day raised almost £7,000, thanks in no small part to crew members Wayne Black and Josh Spiers who endured 24 hours at sea as part of a life raft challenge to raise money for the RNLI. The station’s annual fund raising day, which included lifeboat displays at sea, also saw Littlestone joined by three of its flanking stations from Dungeness, Dover and Rye Harbour as well as the Ramsgate Pilot boat.
They suffered feeling sea sick and cold even though they were dressed in their full lifeboat crew kit - which most who found themselves in a life raft would not have.
At 1pm on Saturday our lifeboat Fred Clarke launched to set down the life raft, anchored it a mile offshore in front of Littlestone station and our two crew boarded.
Wayne Black boat crew said: ‘To be perfectly honest after the first two hours in quite rough seas and feeling sea sick I was doubtful I was going to last, we both felt ill. We kept having to bail out the life raft as it kept filling with water in the choppy sea, but we got through the choppy weather and the seas calmed and spirits lifted with live feeds and playing I spy of all things.
Wayne and Josh went through choppy waters and wind initially, then rain and calmer seas throughout the night.
The crew completed this difficult challenge and were ‘rescued’ at 1.05pm on Sunday in front of hundreds
With large crowds attending and huge support from the local emergency services and stall holders, the Emergency Services weekend was a thorough success.
of onlookers visiting the Emergency Services Day on the beach. Once returned to the safety of the shore the crew were welcomed with cheers and applause. They managed to raise a total of £3254 between them. The Emergency Services day continued with kit demonstrations, BBQ, stalls and the New Romney Sea Cadets band. The total being raised on the day was £3524 and adding the 24 hours at sea sponsors gave a grand total of £6778 A huge thanks to all supporting services, stall holders and most of all to the general public who so generously made this event a roaring success.

We make your business, everyone’s business!
How do I advertise in the handbooks? Arranging for your advert to be included within the handbook is simple. Simply call us on 01303 266755 to book your space. Then, if you have a print ready advert, email it to us at info@eastkenthandbooks.com
Don’t have a print ready advert? No problem, email us your logo (if you have one) and the wording you’d like to include, and our graphic designer will put an advert together for you to use in the handbooks. He does a great job, and it’s free if you are advertising for more than 1 edition (which is how most people book, as your phone calls will increase as people get used to seeing your advert within the handbooks).
Why advertise within the handbooks? We’ve been publishing the handbooks for over 10 years now, and most of our advertisers have their advert included in every edition; why? Because it works - having their advert in the handbooks gets their telephones ringing.
We deliver the handbooks directly through the door of the local community. That means, when our readers are looking for a product or service, your phone number is right there in front of them, in their home. People like things to be straight forward, so if they’re looking for a company to do some work for them, they’ll be very likely to call the phone number they have already in front of them - particularly because our readers know, like and trust the handbooks. By association, they feel the same way about the company’s that advertise with us. Some of the feedback we get from our readers includes: “I wanted to call and say how useful the handbook is. It’s an excellent read and I know that I can feel confident using any of the advertisers in it” “We’ve just moved to the area and have found the handbook so useful - really pleased we’ve got it through the door” “Thank you for your recent article on jobs around the home - I was able to tick a number of things off my to do list using the companies you recommended.” And from our advertisers: “I have been advertising in the handbooks for a long while now, and would like to confirm I get more calls from it than I ever did from my newspaper advertising. I think it’s because people keep the handbooks in their homes, whereas the newspapers get recycled. Whatever it is, it’s working - please keep my advert running” “The handbook has been marvellous for our business; some of our best customers have come from there”
How do I get in touch?
“Doing business without advertising is like winking at a girl in the dark. You know what you’re doing but nobody else does.” - Stuart H. Britt
