Hard work spotlights the character of people: some turn up their sleeves, some turn up their noses, and some don't turn up at all. As we embark on a number of exciting initiatives in the County and beyond please turn up your sleeves and volunteer to get involved, fix your eyes forward on what you can do, not back on what you cannot change. Join the increasing number of East Lancashire turtles, stick you neck out, it's the only way to make progress! As we say goodbye to the summer embrace the winter weather in your programme planning, it's much easier to get wet, cold and muddy........whilst this isn't the main reason young people join, it often makes the best memories.
Glen You may have noticed that ELP is looking a little different this time round! We hope you like it! Our media team in East Lancashire is growing rapidly and after Matt Paiton recently left his role as Media Development manager to go at study at Greenwich University, we’ve had to have a shuffle round. Currently, the Media Team is made up of; Matthew Blades, Lewis Barlow, Sam Parker, Katie Parker, Beth Woodcock, Chris Taylor, Nick Watts, Brett Whitfield, Sam Littley, Andy Halford and Ed & Mandy Burney-Cumming. You can contact us in the usual way either via our facebook page (East Lancs Scout), Twitter (@elancs) or by email (mediateam@eastlancashirescouts.org.uk)

Sport Cross Bow - Training Course In conjunction with the NSRA at Bisley we are promoting the relatively new activity of SPORT CROSS BOW. East Lancashire have purchased three sport crossbows for use at Bowley. These can be used either outdoors (at prior approved locations) or indoors in the Shooting Range or in the Sports Barn. For the record Sport Cross Bow is considered to be considerably safer than standard archery. Sport Cross Bow is shot at either of two distances - 10 metres or 18 metres. In order to be able to use Sport Cross Bows at Bowley we need to get instructors qualified. A prior qualification is that Sport Cross Bow instructors already hold a current valid YPS Air Rifle certificate. The YPS Crossbow Course will be held at Blackburn RPC on 26/27 November and the course fee is £45. Further details from John Lloyd john-lloyd1921@hotmail.co.uk This an opportunity to be amongst the first Scout Leaders in the North West to be qualified for this new activity. Currently there are only six in the UK. Certificate collectors are not welcome. We need qualified people to actively work at presenting this sport to young people.

I’m going to start by bringing you up to speed with Network. We have a new County Network Commissioner—Andy Halford and we also have a new Network Treasurer—Alex Woods. We believe that the 2 new roles have created a strong base which we can use to keep moving Network forward. In the immediate future, we have an aim of showing that Network are a valuable part of the county and to increase the numbers involved. To do this we have a number of ideas that are being put into place as I write this. We believe we need to be more active and have a better presence in the county. To kick-start this process, we have released our brand new clothing range in our infamous purple style. Below you’ll see the schematics of the range and they can be ordered for anyone in the county (17½ or over) through Andy (chattox@eastlancsnetwork.org.uk)
You can purchase the famous purple hoodie for £20, the polo shirt for £12.50 and the t-shirt for just £10!
We are also having some discussions regarding creating some dedicated Network run events and activities at Bowley. The first new activity to be Network run and new to the county will be Prussiking. The first glimpse of the event will be at the Young Leaders weekend at the end of November. This will be a chance to train the Network members in running the event, as well as using the young leaders as the first victims… oops… I mean participants of this new county activity. Keep an eye out for when your group can have a go!
s So, what’s up next to make Network even bigger in 2012?
You will see ELN attending the two biggest camps for Network as a county in Network Gathering over the Easter bank holiday weekend and Mad UK in Essex which is held over the summer. NOT TO BE MISSED!!!
We also have a camp of our own design in the pipeline which we are calling “ThrillSeeker”. To put it plainly it will be a 5 day trip to do 3 theme parks in 3 days. It’s not for the faint hearted so if you think you have the stomach for it, you better start coming to network to find out more! How to contact Network—

We all have dreams and aspirations of running a marathon or a half marathon in our lifetime, so when Mandy B-C, from Burnley District, saw the advertisement to ‘Run for Scouting’ in the Scouting Magazine she could not resist applying. “With the race being in London, I did not expect to be chosen” says Mandy; the advertisement was to represent Scouting in the Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon which took place on Sunday 9th October 2011. “I had been watching the Royal Parks website and saw that the ballot had closed and just assumed I was not successful, so when I got the call a few days later I was over the moon!” “I soon found out that I was the only person in Lancashire to have been successful, so it was a great honour and privilege to represent the County”. Mandy has been training for the event for some months, as well as collecting sponsors from her friends and family “the fundraising was the hardest part” Mandy informs us, but we are pleased to report that she got to her goal of £500 in sponsorship! So tell us about the actual race: Oh it was a fantastic day, we all met up before the race and had our photos taken so that was great to meet everyone representing Scouting beforehand. The atmosphere was electric and something I will not forget in a long time! What was the route like: Very flat, it was a joy to run! We first came out of Hyde Park through Wellington Arch and I thought “oh wow, I’m running past Buckingham Palace” then I was bowled over running past the Houses of Parliament and hearing Big Ben striking 10:00, then it was straight on to see the London Eye, if they weren’t enough landmarks we ran the Embankment, past Downing Street, onto Trafalgar Square, through Admiralty Arch along The Mall and back into Hyde Park! I didn’t see the Royal Albert Hall, but I did see the Albert Memorial as I whizzed past towards the finish line. And how did the race go for you: It had its highs and lows – it was really hot and being a northern runner I am not used to running in such heat. I had a real energy slump around halfway and I was beginning to think I could not complete it, but then I saw my supporters and family and I was so uplifted by them; I was hugging and kissing them and got really emotional and they just spurred me to carry on. Once I got to mile ten I knew I could carry on and then just got on with it. You had northern supporters? Yes, Mandi, our cub leader very kindly took some of our Scouts to London for the weekend; it was so fantastic to see them. I remember running down towards the Serpentine Lake and I could see the Scouts and our banner, the sun was shining on the water and it was such a fantastic scene.
What was your time: 2hrs 26 minutes, I was hoping for anything between 2:15 and 2:30 so I was at the slower end of my time bracket – next year I’ll be aiming for a faster run! Would you run it again: Without a moment’s hesitation if they asked me, and would urge anyone out there who is considering running a half marathon to do this one! Mandy’s son, Jack, was one of the few Scouts who went down to support Mandy in the race. “She was very good running, and I couldn’t do it, so well done to her!” After the race, Jack informs us that they enjoyed the festival and food before then had a very quick whiz around the Science Museum before catching their train home. To read what the Headquarters publicity team had to say about the event please visit http://www.scouts.org.uk/ news/447/team-iscout-go-the-extra-131-miles-to-raise-funds-for-scouting Videos and official pictures can be found on: http://www.scouts.org.uk/
Pulse is a music weekend exclusively for Explorers held here in East Lancashire each year. This is no dodgy Scout disco with a few flashing lights and a DJ no one wishes they’d heard of, we push ourselves to get the latest lighting and sound equipment with a great mix of music. Plus of course a great mix of activities on during the day to keep you entertained. You may have noticed the date has changed from the originally advertise one, this is because we’ve realised how much of a rush it is after the summer break on Leaders and Explorers to get the forms to us before the event if it were to be held in October. Hopefully by moving the event to March we have more time to advertise the event as widely as possible and get more people to come. We’re sorry if this has caused too much disruption to those who have booked already.
Tickets are £35 and can be booked by filling in the form on the booking page on the pulse website. With your ticket you get:
A mix of music
Entertainment throughout the weekend
All meals included
Overnight camping at Bowley (but yes, you’ll need to bring your own tent)

We all want our Scouts to have the opportunity to take part in new adventures that will stay with them throughout their lives. In August 2012 a small group of Leaders are taking up to 16 scouts from across East Lancashire on a canoeing expedition to Sweden to learn how to survive and thrive in the natural environment. Places on the expedition are filling fast however there are a few spaces left for those Scouts who might still be interested in joining the trip. To ensure that everyone has all the information they need there is a Scout and parent’s event on 12 November from 13:30 at Bowley County Campsite. This event will be the last opportunity for Scouts to add their names to the contingent list. Scouts already registered on the contingent list are also being invited to attend. Many Scout Leaders have asked “Why Sweden?” The reason for choosing Sweden rather than basing the trip in the UK is that the country offers the chance to experience a range of different habitats from untouched primeval forests to vast lakes and stunning rivers. This landscape is not only pristine but also accessible and provides the opportunity to give our scouts an experience that would be very hard to replicate in our own landscape. Additionally this expedition will be based out of canoes and Sweden’s lakes offer an unparalleled opportunity to escape from the influence of human activity and see and experience nature first hand.
s If you have scouts who are interested in taking part in this event then please either visit the East Lancashire Scouts website or contact Ed Burney-Cumming on 07876204983 or via email on padihamskip@gmail.com. 15
St Leonard’s Langho to organise Village Bonfire and Fantastic Firework display once again! Plans are underway to make our bonfire and firework display even more spectacular this year. The event takes place on Saturday November 5 th at the Community Centre in Langho, behind St Leonard's Church and is open to everyone - it's not just for the Scout Group. We are obviously going to clash with nearly every other display in the area this year but hope that our continued and growing support gets even bigger this year. We like to think we provide good value for money and the best family orientated display in the area, which as you talk to people leaving at the end of the night seems to be their opinion! Discounted admission tickets go on sale from 22nd October in Langho Spar, Billington Village Store and Whalley Post Office. Family tickets (2 adults and up to 3 children) are just £6 in advance (£8 on the gate), adult tickets £2.50 (£3 on the gate) and child tickets are £2 (£2.50 on the gate). Food, drink and flashing novelties are on sale on the night. Please note, private fireworks, including sparklers are not permitted at the event due to our insurance cover.
