Spotlight On
East Neuk First Responders Since its formation in January 2009 as an independent local community resuscitation charity, East Neuk First Responders have achieved a great deal with the support of the local community. Entirely self-funding, they initially raised thousands of pounds to purchase kit bags, training equipment and a dedicated vehicle which has allowed them to respond to almost one thousand 999 emergency calls to date. Three years ago they launched their Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) campaign, and with huge community support have now installed 36 of these lifesaving machines in the East Neuk. Over 1000 local people and school pupils have attended defibrillator awareness training and the group were delighted when in January this year one of their PADs was used to save the life of a Crail lady.
In addition to the defibrillator and First Aid training they have offered Heart Health, blood pressure checks, health awareness events and also undertake First Aid event cover at local events. Their work has made a great deal of difference to many people and given those living, working or visiting the East Neuk of Fife the best possible chance of survival should they suffer a life threatening emergency. They now need to recruit more volunteers to help with this work, if you are interested in becoming a First Responder, a First Aider, a First Aid Instructor or work in a support role they would like to hear from you. You don’t have to live in a 250year-old house to enjoy the timeless elegance of Georgian style. Refined and uncluttered, its symmetry, proportion and classicism looks good in all kinds of homes, says Katherine Sorrell Did you know it was the Georgians who made us modern? During the century or so following the ascent of George I in 1714, our towns and cities, and homes and gardens, were transformed and the inexorable rise of popular culture began. Perhaps it is part of a trend away from pareddown minimalism in favour of bolder colours, decorative surfaces and more intricate shapes, or perhaps it is simply the appeal of classic elegance – either way, it is not surprising that we find Georgian life and times, and especially its architecture and interiors, fascinating. But what was Georgian style? According to V&A curator Julius Bryant: ‘The prevailing mood of the period is one of classical revival, of symmetry, order, balance, space and calm – in contrast to Victorian clutter. For many of us, slapping on foundation is the last thing we fancy doing on a summer’s day. But if you still want some coverage, try a Blemish Balm (BB). Martin Lewis Money Saving Expert Easter Monday saw the most radical changes to private pensions for a generation. The political spin is it’s ‘freedom and choice in pensions’. Yet more choice means it’s far easier to get it wrong, so here’s what everyone needs to know in 5 minutes… Pension freedom sounds like something from Braveheart – what’s actually happening? I suspect George Osborne does picture himself as a financial freedom fighter. Yet only time will tell whether these reforms will paint him as the man who liberated older savers, or who exposed them to huge risk. This is all about how you use your pension savings. As always you can take a quarter of it as a tax-free lump sum. Yet for decades most people have effectively needed to use the remainder of the money to buy an annuity – a product that pays you an income each year until you die. Now anyone aged 55 and over can take the whole amount as a lump sum, paying no tax on the first 25% and the rest taxed as if it were a salary at their income tax rate.

Budapest ‘Queen of the Danube’ By Solange Hando Set in the Carpathian basi n, Hungary’s capital is said to rank among the m ost beauti ful cities in Eur ope. On the west bank, the wooded hills of Buda climb to 527 metres while to the east, the plain of Pest rises gently i nto the distance. Stroll along the prom enade or sail on t he Da nube and as you gaze at the elegant façades, the domes and spires gliste ning with mosaics, it’s easy to s ee why the river banks form an integral part of the city’s World Heritage. With a lake which is a n ice rink in winter, Bota nical Gardens a nd medicinal baths boasti ng 1 8 pools i n and outdoors, the park is a favourite haunt of city folks, just one of many ve nues w here you can relax i n this ‘land of 1000 hot springs.’ There are over 100 of them i n and around town, incl uding those on G ellert Hill prized since Roma n times. The hill offers swe eping vistas over the city. But s ooner or later, the Da nube calls you back with waterside restaurants, panoramic cruises and bridges revealing ever changing view s and architectural styles, from the contemporary Elizabet h Bridge to the iron Liberty Bridge where the last silver rivet was put in place by Franz Josep h, Emperor of A ustria and Ki ng of Hungary. Budapest s uffered much destruction i n the past, but with its beautifully rest ored buildings, the ‘Quee n of the Danube’ truly deserves its place among E urope’s fi nest cities.

Barbecued Rack of Ribs Makes 4
Ingredients:
Ready in 1 hour
Pre-cooking ribs in a pan of simmering water before placing them on the barbecue will ensure meltingly tender meat every time. This method also saves space on the barbecue as the final cooking time with the sauce is much shorter. Serve with a spicy chunky tomato salsa, if liked.
• 2-3 racks of pork ribs (see Tip) • 6 tbsp tomato ketchup

• 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
Reduce the heat, cover and simmer gently for 45 minutes.
• 2 tbsp sunflower oil • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard • 1-2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed

Tip: Most large supermarkets sell racks of ribs or ask your local butcher to prepare them for you. Single ribs will work just as well (you’ll need about 2kg in weight), just reduce the simmering time to about 25 minutes.
Place the ribs in a large pan and cover with cold water. Bring to the boil then skim off any scum from the surface of the water.
• 3 tbsp maple syrup
Meanwhile, place the rest of the ingredients in a pan and bring to the boil. Simmer for 510 minutes, stirring occasionally. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Leave to cool.

Remove the racks from the pan and drain on a board lined with kitchen paper. Leave to cool for 5 minutes then brush each rack liberally with some of the sauce.

Cook the ribs on the edge of a hot barbecue for 10-15 minutes, turning and basting with any remaining sauce until the ribs are lightly charred in places. Alternatively, the ribs can be cooked under a medium preheated grill.
