Martin Lewis Money Saving Expert Far too many people think "savings rates are so low, why bother doing anything?” Yet, while rates are indeed spitworthily low, don’t be complacent. Active, on-the-ball savers can grab up to 6% interest. So I want to give you a rate-boosting masterclass. The aim's to put every penny where it earns themax interest. Many specialist higher-rate accounts only let you pay in limited amounts for short amounts of time. So if you've big savings, you need to fill them up, then snowball on to the next best, and so on. Don’t overly worry about safety. All UK-regulated savings (which all the accounts below are) have the full £85,000 per person, per financial institution savings safety protection. Yet that’s not a reason to just put money in and forget about it. Monitor rates every few months and if they drop, ditch and switch.

Anstruther Rowing Regatta 10th May 2014 Anstruther's St Ayles Rowing Club’s 3rd Rowing Regatta promises to be a great spectacle with around 10 Skiffs competing for top honours in a variety of races. The revival of coastal rowing in the area, once so popular amongst the mining villages in Fife, will see skiffs from around Scotland taking part in a full day of racing with 9 different class races for both men and women of all ages being held in the East Basin harbour area with plenty of action and excitement on and off the water.
also a fantastic opportunity for local people to find out how to become part of this fast growing sport and hopefully encourage them to have a go as there are also clubs in Crail, Pittenweem and a possible new club forming in St Monans. The event is being organised to coincide with the launching of our new skiff which is being built by the members of the club.
Anyone looking for more information can contact us on secretary@staylesrc.org.uk or visit www.staylesrc.org.uk . Cake and Bake Banana, Walnut & Chocolate Cake Bananas ripen so quickly that it’s easy to find yourself with several left over needing to be used up. Many people don’t like the taste or smell of ripe bananas though so they often go to waste. However, when baked in a cake they lose their s lightly sour smell and give a subtle taste, which is particularly delicious when combined with chocolate and walnuts.
Ingredients:
1.
Preheat the oven to 180C, 160C for fan oven or gas mark 4.
• 100g light brown sugar
2.
Grease a 900g loaf tin and line with greaseproof paper.
• 25 grams caster sugar (white or golden)
3.
Cream the sugar and butter together until fluffy.
4.
Add the eggs and the vanilla essence and then the bananas and mix in well.
5.
Carefully mix in the flower and bicarb, baking powder and cinnamon so there are no lumps, then fold through the dark chocolate and most of the walnuts.
6.
Pour the batter into the loaf tin and bake for 45-55 minutes until a skewer through the centre comes out clean.
7.
Leave on a rack until cool before serving to allow time for the chocolate to set.
8.
Sprinkle with icing sugar and a few more chopped walnuts.
• 100g butter at room temperature
• 2 large eggs • 1 tsp vanilla essence • 3-4 ripe bananas (depending on size), mashed • 175g plain flour • 1 tsp baking powder • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda •
tsp cinnamon
• 100g Walnuts (Chopped or whole) • 75g Dark chocolate chopped or coarsely grated

South Africa The Garden Route By Solange Hando Such a lovely name seems far too humble for the magnificent southern coast of the Western Cape. Stretching for some 200 km along the Indian Ocean, from Mossel Bay to the Tsitsikamma National Park, this is a largely untamed African Garden of rugged shores and virgin beaches, lagoons and lakes, mountains, gorges, flowers and forests of conifer and red and yellow wood. Heather and fynbos bloom purple and gold along the paths and myriads of birds weave their nests in lush greenery. Half way between the Cape and Port Elizabeth, ‘Route 62’ reaches George, the main town, where pride of place goes to the superb transport museum gleaming with steam engines and vintage trains, including the royal carriage of George VI. The last steam train recently ceased operations though friends hope it may reopen. At the moment, a ‘powervan’, a bus running on rail, carries excited visitors on the same scenic line laced with tunnels, viaducts and bridges, and up the dramatic Outeniqua mountains, named after the honey bees once buzzing on flower-covered slopes. The range follows the coast, dropping steeply on the northern side where the arid lands of Little Karoo beckon
18
with ostrich farms and a meagre shade. On this legendary Garden Route, luxuriant nature reserves flourish alongside a sprinkling of coastal resorts haunted by surf and sun seekers. Popular Plettenberg is a great place to watch dolphins and whales, especially in the southern winter, while at the heart of the National Lake Area, Knysna is famed for its festivals, oysters and colonies of seabirds. It’s an attractive place festooned in bottle brush and bougainvillea and down in the bay, honeycoloured rocks are battered by the waves. Along the coast, Mossel Bay hugs a fine crescent of white sands where Bartolomeu Dias, the first navigator to sail around the tip of Africa, landed in 1488. This little gem also claims the oldest ‘post office’, a tree, still standing, they say, where sailors of yore left messages before returning to sea. Created in 2009, the Garden Route National Park covers an amazing range of eco-systems from the Knysna Lake Area to the Tsitsikamma and Wilderness national parks. Framed by mountains and forests, fringed by pristine beaches, lakes and waterways, Wilderness has wetlands of international
importance, meadows bursting with spring flowers and nature trails where you might spot myriad kingfishers and vervet monkeys. On the eastern edge of the Garden Route, you reach Tsitsikamma, a true paradise for nature lovers, both on land and sea where you can snorkel along underwater trails and explore the reefs. Meanwhile in the forest, baboons forage around as a dappled light filters through the lofty cathedral-like canopy. Yellowwoods draped in lichen reach up to 50 metres, mosses and ferns carpet the valley floor and crystal clear streams babble in the undergrowth. The woody scent of fynbos lingers in the air and there are sparkling waterfalls and lots of trails stretching across cliffs and rivers to Nature’s Valley. Hikes range from a short walk to the mouth of the Storms River and its vertiginous suspension bridge, to the 42 km long Otter trail along the coast, with a chance to swim and ford a river or two. But most exciting of all is a sudden flash of olive green in a nearby tree as a beautiful Knysna Lourie, one of the most elusive birds in the park, takes off in the canopy.

Marla Cilley The Fly lady Many of you are habitually late! This is a common trait for most of us. Our husbands hate it too. Believe it or not this has to do with our martyred attitude. Tardiness is a passive-aggressive behavior. I know you don't think it is! We are in control when we make people wait on us, consciously or unconsciously! The problem also arises because of our perfectionism; I just need to do one more thing! This may become more of a problem after you have your routines in place.
zippered notebook with a handle. It had pockets, zippered pouches and it would hold a three ring binder. In this notebook, I kept my bills to be paid, my check stubs, my file for my paid bills (at that time I kept every receipt: I don't do this anymore), pens, pencils, notebook paper, my menus, grocery list, greeting cards, thank you notes, paper clips, little stapler and stamps. This became my portable office. At work, on my break I could work on my menus or grocery list or at lunch, I could pay a few bills and work on my budget. This was a quiet time that I could take 15-20 minutes of uninterrupted time and take care of our finances, plan our menus and make out a grocery list. It was always with me. This was the proto-type for our Office in a Bag.
So what is making us late? We are the reason because of our lack of thinking ahead. When we put a little forethought to our day and take precautions to keep ourselves from getting off track. This is why our Before Bed Routine is so important to a peaceful start to your day. Another reason we run late is we don't fill our cars up with petrol, Ask yourself; how much time do when it is convenient. We wait till you spend searching for things? If we are smack dab on empty and we you could put your hands on an are running behind schedule. This item when you need it, this could cost us time and our safety. Runsave you precious time every day. ning late, makes us rush and rushRight now, where are your car keys? ing can cause us to be careless. I keep mine clipped to my purse. Keep a ÂŁ20 note hidden for emerBefore I get out of the car, I hook gencies or that opportune time to them to my purse. I never have to fill up. I also keep a ÂŁ100 stashed hunt for my keys. This used to be a for larger problems. I rarely have to big problem for me. I would get use it, but I know I have it, if down to the car and then have to needed. This gives me a sense of run back up to the house to search relief and that translates to less for my keys. I have also hidden a stress in my life. I have even done key on my car in a magnetic case, this when I only had ten pence to just in case I get sidetracked again. my name. It took a while to save it up, but I did it. Do you search for bills that need to be paid? When I first got organized, We have to curb our thinking! I devised a notebook similar to the When we hear ourselves say, "I can control journal, except I didn't have do that later!" Let this be the trigroutines in it. easy way!" Putting things off usually make them more difficult to do. The reality is we think, we dread, and we continue to procrastinate until it just has to be done. The whole time we are beating ourselves up over not doing the task when it was so simple. My Sweet Darling calls this the "Do it Now Principle." You know that awful feeling when you should have put that roll of toilet paper in the holder when you first thought about it, now you really, really need it!!! When you think about something that could be so simple to do right now, don't put it off until ater. Now this is not getting sidetrack. I am talking about very short simple jobs that will save time and energy if done now. You know what your granny's always said, "A stitch in time, saves nine!" Learning to ACT in advance instead of Re-Act will help you gain precious minutes to your day. Eventually this will become a habit and you will surprise yourself. I have had to look up and make sure I had paid a bill, because I did it without even thinking. This is a wonderful feeling. FLYing is so easy, when you look ahead.

Gardening A Touch Of The Orient By Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com As the new gardening year is under way, is it time to embark on a new era in your garden? It can be really refreshing to have a change of style, not necessarily in your whole garden but perhaps you could create a different and contrasting feel in a small part of your plot to the rest of your well-loved garden?
source of water powered by a pump, then allow the water to pour out from a bamboo spout and then into another hollowed out piece of bamboo. As the weight of the water increases in the hollowed out bamboo it causes it to tip and to swivel around slightly. Once filled up it then tilts downwards and pours its water into the basin or bowl beneath. When empty it clunks back into position. If you want something even simpler, then buy some wide diameter bamboo canes, hollow one out, cut the end at an angle and simply create a trickling water spout. Provided you fix everything up with a pump, the water can then be recycled around from the bowl or basin and back into the trickling pipe.

Pet Projects Pet owners are famously free with their cash: not hing’s too expensive for a beloved dog, cat, budgie or Viet namese potbellied pig. It’s taken a while for the technology industry to notice, but now they have and there are all kinds of hi gh-tech gizm os for your furry or feathered friends. For get automatic pet flaps and anti-bark collars: the new wave of pet tech includes healt h monitors, cameras and even exercisers. The star of this year’s Cons umer Electronics Show - or its pet division at least - was Voyce, which is ess entially a fitnes s tracker for dogs. It isn’t cheap it’s around £200 for the collar and anot her £10 per mont h - but the pitch is that by monitoring your dog’s activity, breathing, heart rate and calories it’ll give you early warning of any potentially dangerous a nd expensive healt h problems. Voyce will go on sale later this year, and it’s entering a market that’s already looking a bit crowded: in addition to Voyce there are pet fitness trackers including Fitbark (around £60 ) and Whistle (als o around £60). If you thi nk that’s a bit odd, wait until you hear No More Woof: the £50 No More Woof gadget

promises to convert doggy brainwaves into huma n speech. Don’t expect to engage i n scintillating conversation with your Shi h-T zu, though: the repertoire is currently limited to “I’m hungry”, “I’m tired”, and “who are you?” The developers say that No More Woof is a work in progress, though, and early sales of t he device will enable them to make it smarter, more useful and - we hope - m ore comfortable. We can’t imagine our ow n dog putting up with a No More Woof headset for more than a few sec onds. Anot her way to get an insight into your pet’s life is to shell out for an Eyenim al camera. The Petcam is available for cats and dogs, attaches to your pet’s collar and records whatever he or she see s; you can then trans fer the footage to y our computer. Expect to pay around £60. Some pet gadgets appear to be practical jokes, but the GoDogGo is perfectly serious: its Automatic Ball Thrower is a £99 gadget based on t he automated tennis ball machine s that tenni s players use in training. The GoDogGo will happily hurl tennis balls 5 to 10 metres, exercising your dog w hile you sit back and relax.
Have you ever wis hed you c ould take your pet bird for a walk? The people behind the Feather Tether hope y ou hav e, because their £12.99 bird harness mea ns your bird can go wherever you are without fear of inj ury or “the tragedy of fly-aways”. T he harnes s comes in five size s and a range of colours. If you can’t always be with your pet, Petcube might be the answer: it’s a smartphonepowered gadget which c ontains a wide-angl e camera and microphone for streaming hi gh definition video and audio to your iPhone or iPad. There are speakers and a low-i ntensity laser pointer to transmit your voice and amuse your cat respectively. It’ll cost around £160 w hen it goes on sale i n May. If you don’t have a pet, the iPhone/iPad app also enable s you to log int o other people’s public Petcubes (with their permission) a nd annoy their pets instead - and if it’s just the laser pet toy you want, the Frolicat Bolt automatic laser toy is currently £20.01 on Amazon.
