I am a little emotional as I write this note to you all. You never realize how connected you are to something or someone until you can’t ACTUALLY connect. Am I the only one who felt like they were jamming to their favorite old school CD and someone bumped you or you even stumbled a bit and your CD began to skip?. . . And it was stuck for a few days until eventually, you had to press pause? I bet some of you all are too young to know about CDs huh? Maybe I should say you were streaming your favorite movie or show and it began to buffer and no matter how many times you refreshed the device you couldn’t get past that episode or that part? Yeah, that is pretty much what COVID-19 did with the world and really how we felt about having to cancel EAST Conference! BUT in true EAST form, we persevered and have adopted the mentality PLAY ON, and with play comes celebration! In this issue, you’ll hear from our Founder’s Award winners, get a little Q and A from a long time student training instructor and documentation team mentor, Steve Taylor, and learn about the new schools that have joined the EAST network! And to the class of 2020, CONGRATULATIONS! You have officially achieved EAST Alumni status and we challenge you to Play On no matter the circumstances!

EAST welcomed 13 new schools and one community program into the network, bringing the number of programs inspiring change to nearly 270. Each EAST program is equipped with the tools necessary to produce the next generation of STEM leaders, business owners, and problem-solvers and will develop students through the use of technology, critical thinking and communication, and service to their communities. Each new program receives industry-grade technology, significant professional development for facilitators (teachers who manage the EAST environment) and administrators, access to over 70 specialized student trainings on how to use that technology, and real-world experiences that the students author and execute based on their passions.

said something very similar, the best thing about winning Founder’s is reflecting. Q
Is this your program's first time submitting for the Founder's Award? FACILITATOR: This was actually our third time to submit a Founder's Application. We were selected as a Founder's Finalist in 2016. Then in 2017, we were chosen as the overall Founder's Winner. The application process this year was streamlined to make the process much simpler and efficient.
Q
Why did you decide to submit an application for the Founder's Award? TEAM MEMBER: It just felt right! We kind of all looked at each other and said why not? FACILITATOR: We felt that applying for Founder's made sense this year. Our whole EAST program seemed dedicated to making a positive change in our school and community. Making the decision to apply for Founder's early in the year encouraged and motivated students to work hard and do their absolute best.
Q
Describe what it felt like when you were notified that you were 1 of 4 Founder's Award recipients for EAST Conference 2020. FACILITATOR: It was exhilarating! The whole team felt like they were walking on cloud nine. I can remember walking down the hall and see-

ing other EAST students jumping up and down in excitement. TEAM MEMBER: Mrs. Jill, Brody, and Harris were at the EAST Leadership Team Retreat when the Founder's announcement was made. We were super excited, but it was hard not being with the rest of the EAST Conference Team to celebrate. We all just wanted to be together.
Q
Why was it important for your program to submit a Founder's Award application? TEAM MEMBER: Submitting a Founder's Award application is the perfect chance to pause and reflect on all that your program has accomplished. It is a celebration just to compile in one place all that you have achieved. FACILITATOR: Applying for Founder's also sets expectations for projects at a high level. This is a great thing! Once that level of expectation is set high, then students will consistently reach higher. They will challenge themselves to do more than they thought they could. Q
What advice would you give a school who is considering submitting for Founder's Award next year? FACILITATOR: Do it! You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Our application video is something that we are very proud of. Even if we had not won Founder's, our application video is a great way for us to show our community partners, other EAST students, future EAST students, etc. what EAST is about. TEAM MEMBER: Start early on the application process. Don't put it off to the last minute! The earlier you start gathering

evidence and documentation, the better.
Q
What are some memorable moments from the year or the submission process you'd like to share with our audience? TEAM MEMBER: One memorable moment would be sitting there at 1:20 PM trying to get the video to export, silently praying because the video was due at 3:00 PM! YIKES!
Q
What is something you know now that you wish you knew prior to submitting for the Founder's Award or even starting EAST? TEAM MEMBER: EAST is so much more than just a class to fill your schedule. It’s a window into the real world, learning qualities that go far beyond the classroom. TEAM MEMBER: Start documenting all of your projects from the very beginning and have all of your pictures/video organized in Google Drive. This will make the application process go so much smoother.
How do you plan to follow up on the success of this year? FACILITATOR: We plan to continue working hard to make a difference in our school and community. Some of our projects will continue on to next year to finish and implement. Next year will be a little different because we didn't get to have closure on some of our projects, but we will stay the course and finish them as soon as it is possible. Winning Founder's also helps us have high expectations for the future of EAST at Buffalo Island Central High School. TEAM MEMBER: We want to continue that tradition of excellence.
Q
If you could plan a Founder's Award recipient celebration what would it look like? FACILITATOR: We would love to be able to get together to celebrate in some way when it is safe to do so. One way could be for us to host a celebration at our school and maybe some of the EAST staff could come to help us celebrate. That way we could invite many of our EAST students and community partners/clients to join in the celebration. TEAM MEMBER: I agree, winning Founder's is definitely a joint effort between many students, and our community partners are an instrumental part of that as well. Being able to share the celebration with them would be a rewarding experience.
Q
Is there anything else you'd like to share with us? Inside jokes, life hacks, success tips for EAST, motivational quotes, and sayings you use to keep going, favorite snack during work time? FACILITATOR: We just try to constantly motivate and encourage each other. We're all in this together!

HELEN TYSON MIDDLE SCHOOL
Meet the EAST Conference 2020 team of Helen Tyson Middle School (HTMS) led by facilitator Brittany Berry!
Q
Is this your first experience applying for the Founder’s Award? FACILITATOR: Our program has received recognition for a Founder's category three different years in the areas of project sophistication and student growth (now known as the Cornerstone Awards). The students have put in more work towards their projects than we have ever seen, and they are so personally invested in what they are doing. Their submission really showed their commitment and love for EAST and the projects they have worked on all year and, in some cases, years.
and then talk about options for the team. After looking through the submission process they decided it would be a great way to learn more about all the projects and share their work. ONE TEAM MEMBER: As a team, we really enjoyed working together, and we love spending extra time in EAST. It was also cool because we felt our projects really did a great job showing the impact of EAST and the resources EAST offers. ANOTHER TEAM MEMBER: More than anything, we love sharing what we are doing and thought our projects could help inspire others.
Q
Describe what it felt like when you were notified that you were 1 of 4 Founder's Award winners for EAST Conference 2020. FACILITATOR: The entire team was nervous while waiting to hear but decided regardless of the outcome it was worth the time and effort. TEAM MEMBER: We learned so
Why did you decide to submit an application for the Founder's Award? Q
much about our program and really had fun working together, not to mention we learned a lot about filming and editing that will be useful for our current and future projects. TEAM MEMBER: On the day of, we were lucky our teachers let us go to the EAST room to watch the announcement live together. When we heard, we screamed, jumped up and down, and then ran down to the school office to let the principals know. They did a school-wide announcement. Q
Why was it important for your program to submit a Founder's Award application ? FACILITATOR: We thought it was an important opportunity for us to bond as a team and learn more about all the projects and students in our program. We are really proud of the work we are doing and thought others could benefit from hearing about our projects. The process of self-reflection is important, and we want to make sure we are keeping students and our community partners at the center of class each and every day.
Q
What are some memorable moments from the year or the submission process you'd like to share with our audience?
FACILITATOR: There have been many memorable moments this year through our projects and planning for EAST Conference. One week that stands out was the week we got to spend working on our booth. Because of the way our school does English Language Proficiency Assessment (ELPA), we had 5 1/2 days to work together as a team. We brainstormed and planned day one and then got the rest of the time to get the ball rolling. It was fun, we had lots of snacks, and we really bonded as a team. TEAM MEMBER: Another fun memory was interviewing every student in our program. Our booth was a 3D printed scan of each person in our program. We really wanted to take everyone with us, but since we couldn’t, we took them with us this way. We didn't win the Founder’s Award alone — all our students did, and we wanted to make sure everyone's story was shared. TEAM MEMBER: Another memory we have is learning that EAST Conference had been canceled while setting up our booth and planning to speak to over 50 community guests coming to our school. We cried, hugged, and then pulled ourselves together and shared our story. Having that time together to focus on something helped us deal with the disappointment.
Q
What advice would you give a school who is considering submitting for
Founder's Award next year? FACILITATOR: Focus on the passion you and others have for the work you are doing in EAST. If you can share about why you have chosen to do your projects and how you have grown through the process, you will learn so much about your program. It is also a great chance to bond as a Conference team and help all your students in all your classes grow through a common goal of spotlighting your whole program.
Q
What is something you know now that you wish you knew prior to submitting for the Founder's Award or even starting EAST? FACILITATOR: It is always important to remember the process is more valuable than anything, in your project, submitting Founder’s or building an EAST program. It is easy to get so focused on the project and what you hope to accomplish, but all the time you spend looking at the how and why will lead to a more successful project and team.
Q
How do you plan to follow up on the success of this year? FACILITATOR: We have many projects that we are still finishing or expanding. Our team, short of two students, will be back at HTMS next year so we are focused on how we can continue to be leaders in
school and our program. We are all looking forward to new projects and partners in the future.
Q
If you could plan a Founder's Award recipient celebration what would it look like? FACILITATOR: That is a hard one because EAST Conference is such an amazing experience to replicate and only three people on our team have ever been. A celebration for us would involve sharing our story with other students.
Q
Is there anything else you'd like to share with us? Inside jokes, life hacks, success tips for EAST, motivational quotes or sayings you use to keep going, favorite snacks during work time? FACILITATOR: Right now we are really focused on "being helpers" whenever and wherever we can be. When we found out EAST Conference was canceled we kept our spirits up by taking time to find #silverlinings via zoom, email, and Google chats. We are all still sad that EAST Conference was canceled, but we are focused on our school and our projects and finding things to be happy and proud of. Favorite snacks: well...we hid Ramen Noodle cups from each other during Conference planning and ate a lot of hot cheetos!

Meet the EAST Conference 2020 team of Marshall High School led by facilitator Coach Tommy Welch! Q
Is this your program's first time submitting for the Founder's Award? FACILITATOR: YES (WOOHOO) TEAM MEMBER: It’s still unreal to us!
Q
Why did you decide to submit an application for the Founder's Award? TEAM MEMBER: It has always been something that the facilitator has told us to shoot for. We felt that our program had grown more this year than in years past, due to the Production Crew getting out in the community and offering our services wherever needed. FACILITATOR: The six students in this bunch have grown not only as individuals but as a group. They were determined from the start of the school year to prove to themselves that they had the right stuff. We developed a philosophy of "Be Humble & Kind, But Make Every Day Count," and "Attitude Reflects Leadership." With this in hand, they truly felt that they were right in line to meet ALL the Cornerstone requirements.
Q
Describe what it felt like when you were notified that you were 1 of 4 Founder's Award winners for EAST Conference 2020. TEAM MEMBER: We were out in the community working on a project and had stopped in a local restaurant to grab lunch. While we were waiting for food to arrive, we watched the Facebook live presen8
tation. When they announced our name, Coach Welch (facilitator) let out a LOUD scream, jumped up, and did some kind of dance. The people in the restaurant thought he was crazy, but after we announced what was going on, they applauded and some even stood up.
Q
Why was it important for your program to submit a Founder's Award application? TEAM MEMBER: It is a way to prove to yourself that the work you are doing is following the excellence of being an EAST program. That NO MATTER how big or small your program is, you can make a difference in a unique way that not only helps those in your community but allows an experience that you will take with you for the rest of your life.
Q
What advice would you give a school who is considering submitting for Founder's Award next year? FACILITATOR: Start at the beginning of the year! TEAM MEMBER: Yes, start at the beginning of the school year collecting the requirements that cover the Cornerstone elements of the Founder’s Award.
Q
EAST QUARTERLY | www.EASTinitiative.org
What is something you know now that you wish you knew prior to submitting for the Founder's Award or even starting EAST?
FACILITATOR: That COVID-19 was going to impact the EAST Conference and the opportunity for the students to share their projects with their peers. How do you plan to follow up on the success of this year? FACILITATOR: Keep pushing to help make our community, school, and other EAST programs better in any way that we can. TEAM MEMBER: To Be Humble and Kind, But Make Every Day Count!!!!!!!!!
Q
Q
If you could plan a Founder's Award recipient celebration what would it look like? FACILITATOR: We’d love to still celebrate and be honored at EAST Conference 2021 so that the team can experience what it's like to present on the stage and soak in all the positivity and excitement. TEAM MEMBER: I don’t really know, but I know I want it to involve the other winners!

SONORA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Meet the EAST Conference 2020 team of Sonora Elementary School led by facilitator Josh Worthy!
Q
Is this your program's first time submitting for the Founder's Award? FACILITATOR: This was not our first time submitting for Founders. It was actually our fourth time. In 2012 we applied as a first-year program. At that point, I'm not sure many elementary programs had entertained the idea of applying for Founder’s. We were awarded the EAST Rising Star Award. In 2013, we were a finalist for the Founder’s Award. We were excited to see HarBer High School win the award that year. In 2014, we applied and actually won! It was super exciting being the first elementary program to finally break through and tell our story on the big stage. We created a "Draw My Life" video for our submission this year. Many of the kids on our team were familiar with that style from YouTube videos from their favorite Vloggers. We just thought it would be a fun and unique way to tell our story. Mr. Worthy really tried to impress on the team that submitting an application for Founder’s is not a video creation competition, it’s a storytelling competition, and we thought the Draw My Life format was the best way to tell our story of the past 12 months.
Q
10
Why did you decide to submit an application for the Founder's Award? EAST QUARTERLY | www.EASTinitiative.org
TEAM MEMBER: Mr. Worthy always leaves it up for the team to vote. In the last few years, the team was only interested in smaller competitions or maybe a Cornerstone award. FACILITATOR: The kids felt like we had the projects to showcase and some cool partnerships to feature so they went for it.
Q
Describe what it felt like when you were notified that you were 1 of 4 Founder's Award winners for EAST Conference 2020. TEAM MEMBERS: Shocked. Surprised. Anxious. Mr. Worthy turned on the live-stream late, right as "Sonora Elementary" came across the screen...so he had no idea what it was for. Was it for a Cornerstone award? Maybe a project finalist competition? Then his phone blew up with texts and it suddenly became real. Turns out Mr. Worthy was watching alone in his classroom because he thought they wouldn’t be named for Founder’s Award recipients again, but perhaps Cornerstone winners in the Growth category. He shared the news and live-stream with the kids that afternoon.
Q
Why was it important for your program to submit a Founder's Award application? ONE TEAM MEMBER: Mr. Worthy always tells us that reflection is the most important part of EAST Conference. We hadn’t submitted for Founder’s in about six years, and we had not reflected efficiently in recent years. FACILITATOR: The entire process of analyzing projects for growth and community involvement is so valuable. We knew the sophistication was there but didn’t know how to showcase it. The Founder’s application is one of the best tools to enforce that reflection. It fosters growth: win, lose, or draw.
Meet the Sonora Elementary 2020 EAST Conference Team: Emily Parks Ellie Worthy Lathan Copeland Rylie Ebey Kemper Lieutard River Provence Nayeli Rodriguez
Q
What advice would you give a school who is considering submitting for Founder's Award next year? FACILITATOR: Do it! Take some time to apply...you’re not THAT busy. Put your projects on hold for a day or two and do it. The process is worth every second of reflection; it will pay off WAY MORE in the long run. I feel like I sold my kids short the last six years by not applying every year. You don’t even need to click the submit button... just do the application for yourself. It’s THAT important.
Q
What is something you know now that you wish you knew prior to submitting for the Founder's Award or even starting EAST? FACILITATOR: Facilitators...stay out of the way, dang it. If you get in the way and try to make this program or even application yours, the kids will overrun you and call you out.
Quinn Spurlock This is THEIR application. It may not be perfect, it may have some loose ends, but let them do it. This is THEIR reflection. So get out of the way.
Q
How do you plan to follow up on the success of this year? FACILITATOR: Rest up. Get healthy as a country, state, and EAST program. Reboot. And do it all again next year. From experience, the following year after winning Founders is HARD. You can’t get a big head or rockstar syndrome, you HAVE to stay grounded and focused. I think with all the extra time off, the kids will be ready to come back motivated and hungry.
Q
If you could plan a Founder's Award recipient celebration what would it look like? FACILITATOR AND TEAM: Maybe some sort of "EAST Night In" at EAST Headquarters in the Fall of 2020. Something special with the sponsors, the board, and the four programs with their teams. It would be great PR for EAST and an awesome opportunity for the kids. I know Springdale would fill a bus and be there!

Industry: Retired Educator, Producer, Trainer Number of Years as an EAST Student Training Instructor: 12+ (not sure) Title of Training(s): Make A Movie, Editing, Basic Camera, Advanced Camera, Audio, How To Do An Interview, and probably a few more I forgot! Area of Expertise: Video and Audio Production
Q&A
How have you grown as a trainer from year one to present day in EAST? I’ve had to adapt my training to a higher level. EAST students are fast learners and are used to being presented with challenging material.
Why do you continue to conduct trainings for EAST?
EAST is like family now. We share the same teaching style and thoughts about education. Give the students a real-world problem to solve. Give the students the correct tools. They will solve the problem and most of the time, go way beyond the scope of the original problem.
How did you get connected with EAST?
What is your favorite part about being a student training instructor for EAST?
When I walk into the EAST headquarters, I get hugs (I miss those right now). People genuinely care about the trainers and the students' success. It’s a rarity to find that kind of love in academia.
With unlimited time and resources, what kind of training would you conduct?
I would take students to a real movie or television set and let them work.
What secret skill do you have that could provide an interesting training? Lol, I’m about tapped out on topics...but how about a basic beekeeping course?
Kathy Casteel, a previous facilitator at Camden Fairview High School (where Tevin Wooten went to school) had been working with me locally. She recommended me to Melanie Ridlon, Director of Operations at EAST, as a potential trainer. According to Melanie, “Steve is an exceptional trainer who continues to provide engaging and cutting edge training experiences for EAST students.”
If anyone is on the fence about becoming a student training instructor for EAST what advice would you give them?
If you had to explain EAST to someone unfamiliar with what we do, what would you say?
EAST is the sparkling gem in academia. It’s worldclass trainings, and the people make it a true joy to be around. Nothing more to share. I love EAST!!!
It’s education that works. In this day and age, all knowledge is available online. EAST allows students to use that online data to solve real problems. This gives students access to many different types of learning and lets them put that newly learned knowledge to work in a real-world setting, and pace, with real-world consequences. 12
