Welcome Home

As the temperature rises and summer daydreaming begins, we're thrilled to focus on everything related to dreamy homes in this issue. Moving into our sleepy neighborhood nearly two decades ago, it’s both a little hard and a little exciting to see incredible homes of this caliber in East Austin. On one hand, change it hard. My grandmother (whose family settled in East Austin in the 1800s) would probably flip in her grave to see the concrete jungle that has replaced the woods she walked through leading her to the river for her daily catch. On the other hand, she might bask in the modern conveniences. Such as, she could now walk to Este (read more on pg.44) and have her fresh fish prepped to perfection, brought to her table by a delightful server, for her to utterly enjoy mouthwatering coastal flavor combinations. Her family were master carpenters and built many of the old homes that used to make up Waterloo (now Austin). She would definitely turn over in her grave to know that a machine can now spew out concrete to form clean, yet undulating, walls to build some of the most beautiful and efficient structures on the planet—in a matter of days.

In this issue, we showcase some of the most stunning homes in our community. From a cozy oasis in the epicenter of town to ICON's House Zero, which is revolutionizing the future of home building to a turn-of-the-century home that honors its past while embracing modern conveniences. They each reflect the innovation and openness of the East Austin community, which pay homage to classic elements while also embracing the future.

Home encompasses the entire community of people living and working together. In this issue, we highlight the individuals who make this community unique. From local craftsmen to farmers to artisans, it’s the small businesses that make up a community, and that hasn’t changed. Finally Renovating the Nation’s Oldest Public Housing Project

In 1939, the original 124-units that comprised Rosewood Courts were constructed as part of President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal and defined the first African-American public housing complex in the nation. To add further gravity to their cultural importance, the culde-sac of low-slung buildings sits atop land that was formerly known as Emancipation Park and is still the location of the city’s annual Juneteenth parade.

For decades the history of this complex remained largely frozen in time. Sadly, though the city around it has changed immensely in the 84 years since its construction, the complex has not received upgrades to keep up with modern America. Although there was general agreement that modernization was required for the Rosewood Courts because the buildings lacked central air conditioning, wheelchair accessibility, and modern plumbing, the question remained how to update the facilities while retaining the character of the mid-century brick buildings encircled by a lively community.

The answer came in the form of a compromise voted on by the Austin City Council in 2018. Called Pathways at Rosewood Courts, the agreement between the Housing Authority of the City of Austin (HACA), the City Council, and

the site’s developer called for the preservation of eight of the most visible buildings on the site while redeveloping the remaining structures on the nearly nine-acre parcel. After many years of residents and their surrounding neighbors calling for the site’s rejuvenation, a feasible plan was finally put in motion. According to HACA, Rosewood residents have relocated for the duration of construction with the help of a designated team of HACA employees. All relocated residents will have the first right of refusal to return upon completion of the project.

The updated complex, which is currently under construction, will be designed to provide modern, energy-efficient housing for lowincome families and will feature 184 new income-restricted units, 12 affordable townhomes, and the original facades of the eight remaining historic buildings will be renovated

to meet modern living standards. While the planning process to redevelop this public housing project has taken years, the actual development itself is slated to take place in a matter of months, and the city plans to welcome new and former residents into their refurbished homes by the end of 2023. Even though the path to this point has been far from straight, the redevelopment of this historically rich site is a bold step forward for the community, allowing long-time residents to remain in central Austin at a time when many are getting priced out. The hope is that this investment ensures that the legacy of Rosewood Courts continues to build a thriving community that will be supported for generations to come. CONTACT:

How One Artisan Creates Lasting Family Memories

Besides working on his own craft, Philip is also involved in The Splinter Group, an organization that aims to host a range of artisans in an affordable studio space in central East Austin.

Many childhood homes had them: the decades-old heirloom pieces in dark, knotted wood, decorated with a splattering of scratches and nicks, each containing their own story. Taking the form of dining tables, China cabinets, dressers, and cozy chairs, handcrafted furniture tends to stick around through generations.

Philip Hernandez, Dallas-native and longtime Eastsider, is a designer and fabricator of custom-made furniture. Much like the slow food or slow fashion movements, Philip’s woodworking process is marked by handcrafting, use of local materials, time-tested techniques, and most importantly, intentionality. Every piece he creates is tailored to the needs of his clients, the specifications of the space it will occupy, and is imbued with the expectation that it will last significantly longer than mass produced pieces.

Established in 2015, Philip creates under the studio name Domi Goods. Domi is Latin for house or home. He brings to his practice a background in homebuilding and, somewhat surprisingly, anthropology. He notes, “The study of humans and human culture is something that is still deep within, the cultural relevance of furniture in your living space. It's not just a place where you sleep or a place where you eat. These items that we keep in our house are things that we live with and things that we age with. We have special moments

all over the house.” He emphasizes the importance of furniture that stays through the years of memories by saying, “Those special pieces can be a part of your life, almost like a family member.” While family members can’t be handpicked, objects that make up a life certainly can be, and quality pieces like these can create a lasting legacy.

Though every piece is made with the patron’s taste in mind, Philip’s work is generally marked by mid-century modern esthetics and minimalist appeal. He also takes influences from Japanese traditions. In fact, many of his tools were made in Japan, and he considers that fact an integral part of the trade. “The whole process, from the tools to the final product, all have an inherent integrity to it. I want [furniture pieces] to be imbued with all the history of woodworking and the history of artisan making.” He adds, “This is important because the furniture that I make is not an inexpensive item. I don't rush through it. I like to give my everything.” This dedication is apparent in every unique piece Philip brings to life.

What’s the Buzz About?

Two Hives Honey is Changing the Bee Conversation.

Protecting bees is one of those things most of us know is important. But the reasons why, and possibly more importantly, how, are elusive. Tara Chapman, beekeeper and CEO of Two Hives Honey, is on a mission to change that.

DID YOU KNOW?

Honey bees are not native bees; they're native to Afro-Eurasia. While important, it's also important to remember to protect our native pollinators. There are over 4,000 species of native bees living in Texas alone, and each plays a significant role in our local ecosystem.

BEEKEEPER TRAINING

In keeping with their bee-first philosophy, Two Hives trains novice beekeepers, offering a range of services from one-on-one training, group classes, and apprenticeships.

BEE A POLLINATOR

Tara is an ardent ambassador of bees. The West Texas native pivoted from an intelligence career in the CIA to full-time honey farmer after several years of dabbling in the art. Her neighbor and owner of Nile Valley Herbs was gracious enough to allow her to keep hives in his backyard where she often hosted bee-curious folks who wanted a peek into the secret world of the captivating

insects. Tara saw that this form of agrotourism was of interest to not only her but also to many of their neighbors. After a bit more training in the “incredibly nuanced form of agriculture,” Two Hives Honey was born to educate the public, protect the bees, and produce some damn good local honey.

As for planting for the bees, “think about things like rosemary and sage, because they bloom multiple times throughout the year, and it's really hard to kill them. They're super drought tolerant,” Tara explains. It only takes a small time investment to make a yard a native bee haven, and the payoff for the planet is well worth it.

True to their roots, Two Hives hosts guests ages six and up on hive tours where visitors don the classic hat and veil of a beekeeper to get up close and personal with the bees. Tour guides share the fascinating inner workings of the hive, explaining the roles of each kind of bee and the various stages of their honey-making process. Tara is emphatic when noting that despite the company name. “We are first and foremost beekeepers... We have to make sure that our bees are being cared for properly, and we put their health and well-being above all else. But people love honey. So we say we're selling honey, but really, we're selling a love of bees and ecology.” It might seem like a bit of a bait-and-switch, but it's hard not to be enthralled while learning about the hidden world of honey bees.

After instilling respect for the work of the engrossing pollinators, a sweet treat lies in store for patient tourists at the honey bar. Here, guests can explore the assorted flavors created by different pollination sources throughout the year. come as a surprise. The unique array of products stands in stark contrast to the homogenized, monotone honey shelved at the local grocery store. The creamed honey with cinnamon is a particular standout that should not be missed. This smooth concoction is created by applying a special heating process to the honey that takes it from a viscous, sticky substance to more of a butter consistency.

The realization that each batch of honey is essentially one-of-a-kind adds a bit of weight to the taste testing. Considering the bountiful output of massive honey companies’ product, which is blended to create uniformity, the selection at Two Hives instills a sense of reverence for the distinctive labor of love that goes into creating a little jar of golden goodness. After satisfying a sweet tooth, visitors leave with a deep appreciation for the miraculous gift of nature that is the honey bee.

0n a sleepy corner lot, a crisp, single-story roofline rests elegantly above ten evenly spaced laminated wood beams. Modest, yet elevated, in its street presence, the home bears many hallmarks of its renowned Texan architect, Lake | Flato, resembling a breezy, modern ranch appropriately scaled to its East Austin neighborhood.

But something about this home is markedly different from its neighbors. Beneath its taut canopy unfurl monolithic walls of gray concrete that arc and undulate in the sunlight, a closer inspection reveals thin striations of texture otherwise known as beads, which are neatly stacked in one-inch increments.

Beautiful and performative, the walls of the home are its centerpiece, showcasing the emerging potential of an as-of-yet unconventional and highly efficient method of construction: 3D-printed walls. Pioneered by ICON, an Austin-based startup founded in 2017, the home is one of the first to thoughtfully explore 3D-printing in a way that doesn’t sacrifice quality for viability, earning global attention and myriad of accolades for its success.

After inviting architects to consider ways to design a home that takes advantage of its 3D-printing process, ICON awarded the project to Lake | Flato, a firm well-known for its sensitive, sustainable approach to architecture.

the ripples in the façade. We knew what our software was capable of, but this was our first chance to demonstrate some of these new methods,” she explains.

For a research project conceptualized as a test bed for a home-building revolution, the resulting structure is both delightfully refined and confidently at ease compared to its high-end residential counterparts peppering Austin’s landscape.

Its interiors are bright and comfortable; the circulation between its three bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, and shared spaces are informed by careful wall placement as the ribbed material flows continuously from exterior to interior. The warm material palette of the home complements varied light play against the walls’ rippled surfaces, creating moments of serenity and drama throughout the day.

Outside, a modest one-bedroom, one-bathroom accessory dwelling unit affords additional living space for communal living.

were printed in only two weeks of the six-month construction schedule and are insulative, self-supported, and save time and material when compared to traditional construction. The calibrations that ICON makes during the printing process allow for control of environmental factors such as humidity and balancing the viscosity of the mixture to create a structurally sound and esthetically uniform finish that is at once graceful and playfully sinuous.

As a case study, the home represents a concrete step toward making these construction methods accessible to architects and homeowners alike.

Looking to the future, ICON is leveraging its expertise in several aspirational initiatives, including an innovative, 100-home planned community, bespoke hospitality accommodations at El Cosmico in Marfa, and a collaboration with NASA to design 3D-printed buildings on the moon.

An East 6th Oasis

Top-Down Approach

After falling in love with East Austin while enrolled in law school at the University of Texas, Brittany Dadon and her husband Darryl scooped up a dilapidated 1940s bungalow on a prime East 6th plot. Enamored with the neighborhood’s energy, people, history, and culture, the couple quickly made the property livable and set to work on broader ambitions for the site.

With a growing family in mind, the duo enlisted J.C. Schmeil of Merzbau Design Collective to guide their planning, which started with the construction of a generous two-story accessory dwelling unit, built in six months while the pair lived in a trailer on the site. Meanwhile, the bungalow was hoisted onto a flatbed trailer and donated to Jumping Jack Dog Ranch, a local non-profit, where it was repurposed to accommodate staff living on the premises.

Once the ADU was complete, attention turned to the main house and the private backyard that would reside between the two structures.

Flexible Living

Brittany and Darryl have made the ADU their home office, while the attic is now a playroom for their young daughter and son.

“I had never designed a house from the top-down before,” explained J.C., “but with the main house, we started in the attic, designing an office that would eventually become a playroom that framed views of downtown.”

By starting from the top, the designers took advantage of Austin’s “habitable attic exemption” which allowed the addition of the third-floor space without contributing to the home’s floor area ratio, a metric that prescribes how big or small a home can be on its site.

From the street, the home is a tidy, white stucco volume punctuated by large windows beneath a low-slung, standing-seam metal roof. From the roofline emerges a full dormer, hinting at its additional third-floor attic space. Set back behind a darkstained wood fence with narrowly offset slats, the front yard offers a degree of transparency while still affording privacy from the busy street.

Inside, a restrained esthetic of white walls and dark, polished concrete floors pop with bold instances of color and texture. The kitchen, which yields to an open living room, features deep violet cabinetry over white, dark-veined marble, the spaces bathed in daylight from floor-to-ceiling windows facing a verdant backyard. Outside, the ADU’s pitched roof and pink stucco walls anchor a visual connection with the main house, shaping space between for an intimate, private pool.

“My tastes are pretty neutral, but when I was picking out all the finishes, my back house ended up pink, my kitchen is purple, and the wallpaper is bold and graphic,” says Brittany. “I was surprised where we landed with the choices, but it’s warm and natural instead of sterile and sanitized.”

Those choices are complemented by J.C.’s sensitive placement of windows which work to bathe the home in light throughout the day, while also curating a variety of views into the neighborhood.

J.C. continues, “In the end, it was a neutral palette that best showed off moments where Brittany and Darryl’s personalities and expressiveness shine through. The rest was using form to shape light and create privacy.”

After fully moving into the main home in 2021, the couple looks forward to raising their family while enjoying the myriad of walkable amenities the Eastside has to offer.

Founder Ashley Yetter’s journey to opening her own store involved a random series of events that fortuitously tied together. From her education in International Studies to subsequent jobs in PR, event producing, and fashion, all of her seemingly disparate experiences informed her current role as a creative and small business owner living in North Africa. She sources products from all over the world, but Moroccan designs influence her aesthetic the most. Each of the makers Ashley works with are families whom she has fostered connections over the years.

In 2020, Ashley relocated from Austin to the stunning land of Marrakesh, Morocco, where she designs and oversees the production of all their goods. Her desire to partner with Moroccan artisans sprouted from a two-night layover in the country in 2015. After the trip, she returned to the U.S. feeling overwhelmed and inspired by the medina (the old core of the city), souks (marketplaces), and the smorgasbord of skillful vendors.

Ashley created a brand on a whim, hoping to marry the traditional creations of independent artisans with her own modern vision. She started making pillows in her Brooklyn apartment and named the business after said apartment, an idea

born from a joke with her friends.

The venture began online in late 2016, with the storefront debuting in East Austin soon after in early 2017. Austin, a more affordable town than her hometown of New York City, made perfect sense as a place to open shop. Austin is filled with characters who appreciate brand values like ethical sourcing, hand-crafting, and straying from the conventional.

In addition to their gorgeous look and feel, Moroccan rugs hold a lot of meaning. Many of them follow no pattern, as the weaver is telling a story of their lives, dreams, and prayers. “A lot of Moroccan rugs don't have fringe on both ends,” Ashley recalls with enthusiasm. “People here say the reason for this is because when the weaver knots one end, they're ending their story.” While Apartment F also offers

The process of bringing items to customers in Austin takes a significant amount of effort from an extremely organized and determined person. Ashley loves her demanding job and takes pride in her role. She talks about her mission with a smile, “The whole idea behind Apartment F is surrounding yourself with things that actually mean something to you, as opposed to just collecting a bunch of junk to fill your house.”

A historic farmhouse finds new life in the 21st century.

For those who dream of living in the fine craftsmanship of a storied structure but also crave urban life, it can be tough to find the ideal home. Yet, in 2016, a young couple found the best of both worlds.

Arelocated 1900s farmhouse was given a new lease on life when Claire and Justin Tapscott enlisted the help of the Moontower Design build team to bring their home into a modern era while holding true to the classic details they love about their home.

The pair purchased the house in 2016 and inherited with it a rich well of stories. The sturdy 1918 structure was relocated from the UT campus area to the East 53rd neighborhood in the early 1960s by Lois and Wiley Brady, its homeowners at the time. Today, the original house remains intact with a tasteful addition that honors its vintage character of a bygone era. “Some people take the approach of,

‘Hey, for the addition, we're going uber modern, and we're highlighting that there's an addition onto this old structure.’” However, Claire and Justin wanted the addition “to feel like it was part of the original house,” explains lead designer Jessica Smith. Jessica worked with her team to design both the structure and the interior of the addition, creating harmony between structure and style, while also maintaining a seamless transition between old and new.

To achieve consistency throughout the entire home, Jessica selected finishes that created a natural flow between the two spaces. She notes, “[The owners] fought to make sure we kept the wood floors and

the old original interior doors.” She worked to find hardwood flooring that matched the original for the newly-built primary suite. The team also made architectural choices that served as a natural response to the shape of the over a hundred-year-old design. For example, a new archway in the kitchen echoes an existing arch, producing continuity throughout the home while classic moulding and custom millwork fit well within its time capsule.

Jessica points out that, though the addition “isn’t huge” in square footage, it is impactful, taking the modest two bed, one bath house to a roomier four bed, two bath home that better fits its growing family. The impactful expan-

sion of this turn of the century home has allowed it to continue to serve as a haven for years to come.

Quebec City

A UNESCO World Heritage site, the city of Quebec in the province of Quebec, Canada, turns into a magical fairyland for the holidays. Often dubbed the most European-looking city in North America, Quebec City lights up during the wintertime with lights, decorations, and almost-guaranteed snowfall. The German Christmas Market alone draws thousands every year, with its variety of stalls and mulled wine to keep visitors warm. Stay at the Chateau Frontenac, one of the most glamorous hotels in the country, originally built for the National Railway.

History buffs will love the many historical sites to explore, including

la Citadelle de Quebec, the largest British fortress in the Americas, and the Plains of Abraham, where the British Army defeated the French in 1759 but is now the “central park” to the city.

Exmouth

Off the coast of Australia lies an extraordinary snorkeling experience in Ningaloo Marine Park. The clear blue waters are the entry point to another world filled with colorful fishes and corals. Ningaloo is home

to one of the largest fringing reefs in the world and is a World Heritage-listed destination.

While its white sand beaches are beautiful anytime of the year, there is a unique bucket list item for those who visit its waters. From March to August, the whale shark migration passes through this reef, offering divers and adventurous swimmers the sublime opportunity to move alongside this behemoth of a fish. Though intimidating in size, cutting through the water alongside the docile shark is perfectly safe. And a bonus feature is that divers and snorkelers not only get to see these awesome creatures up close, but they can also see other marine life like sea turtles, dugongs, and whales.

Cape Town, South Africa, is one of those destinations that has it all: beaches, forests, gardens, mountains, a culinary scene, and of course, wine lands. Take a drive inland, and an African Safari awaits! This coastal city has stunning natural landscapes, delicious and diverse foods, and is known for its amazing scenery and wonderful weather year-round, making it easy to enjoy everything that Cape Town has to offer.

Much like Austin, Cape Town prides itself on farm-to-table AND sea-totable restaurants (all foodies rejoice!) with ample cafes, rooftop bars, and fresh markets.

Now, if you’re thinking “all that sounds great, but you mentioned wine lands, and I need to know more,” then we can relate. I can’t confirm this (yet), but rumor has it that South Africa is arguably one of the best wine regions out there. The fertile soil yields rare blends only found in South Africa. It’s more budget-friendly than most areas, while many wineries are family-owned farms, the wine lands are expansive enough to spend weeks wandering the vineyards.

The coastline offers surfing, relaxing under the sun, or a playful colony of penguins. Something unique about their numerous beaches is the fact that Cape Town marks the point where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet. This makes the western beaches completely different from the ones on the eastern

side. The variety becomes enticing to check-mark more than a handful of experiences for bucket listers. It’s been said you can’t visit Cape Town without falling in love with it, and that’s a statement we plan to put to the test this year! by

Central Peru

Though the most enticing places to visit for avid travelers are typically off the well-worn path, I am going to jump right on the tourist bandwagon with this one and say that Machu Picchu should top every list. As an UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of the World, it’s no surprise this fortress in the clouds is the number one tourist attraction in South America. You don’t have to be a history buff or a llama to appreciate the panoramic views that anchor this well-preserved Incan masterpiece uniquely situated above rolling greens and rocky peaks.

Next stop on the tourist train is Rainbow Mountain. Just a day trip from Cusco lies a colorful land, barren of trees. A hike up Rainbow Mountain yields a view true to its name, and those who’ve been say there is nothing quite like it.

As tourists stumble upon Huacachina, they may have flashbacks of a movie scene as their parched mouths start to water. Huacachina is a mini tropical gem in the middle of shifting white sands, which houses an oasis in its beautiful city center. Though this popup lake is sandwiched in greenery, this tiny town is suited for visitors wanting to try their hand at sandboarding.

No trip to Peru is complete without a stop in its coastal capital city. Lima is a patchwork quilt seaming together old and new. Stitched within its fabric are elegant colonial remnants abutting modern skyscrapers and mouthwatering coastal cuisine heavily influenced by both its native land and sea and its Japanese migrants. But let’s face it. We’re not here for the salt and pepper architecture; it’s all about the South American ceviche and the Pico Sours that will leave visitors craving more of Peru long after vacation is over.

Nile River Cruise

Floating along the Nile, the chaos of the present melts away under the desert sun as travelers take refuge in a well-appointed ship sailing the deep blue waters.

The bygone era where travel felt more like an adventure feels so distant for anyone who’s recently gone through the gauntlet of trying to enjoy a modern-era vacation. Every best-kept secret is pinned on map apps, and influencers are five steps ahead in sharing the “next best thing” in travel. That sense of wonder has been replaced by a sense of urgency to experience the most of somewhere before it’s taken over. Yet, as paradoxical as it may sound, the over-discovered history in Egypt still offers a slower pace experience for those looking to escape the rat race of tourism.

Several companies and cruise lines offer a means of seeing monumental sites without cramming into tight quarters on a gargantuan ship. Each ship is intimate in size, focusing on the world outside its windows instead of providing distracting amenities to keep the gaze inward. The breathtaking scenery along the Nile, with stops in Cairo, Luxor, and Memphis, hearkens back to that era of exploration. Even though each monument or ruin has long been studied, there’s a sense of breaking a barrier as small groups disembark the ship to tour the marvels in the Egyptian sands.

Welcome to the Magic

The Big Isle of Hawaii’s upper crescent is most notably known as home to one of the world’s most active volcanoes. Though watching Mauna Loa Volcano explode in her most glittering majesty should not be missed, there is a whole other side to the fertile soil she has birthed.

Just off Highway 11 lies a simple village hidden within a rainforest. First-time visitors are in for a sweet treat as they pull up to Volcano Rainforest Retreat. Each turn down the black rock pathway leads visitors on a mysterious walk as they brush past canopies of giant ferns and pass mossy trunks of Ohia trees with the occasional bright pop of a fuchsia orchid sprouting off the trunks as if intentionally saying “welcome to the magic.”

This small corner of the Big Island is thick with fanning ferns and canopies of bright tropical plants nourished by abundant rainfall. Cool, misty breezes fill the mountain air of this village that sits at 3,800 feet above the sea, located just 10 minutes from the national park entrance.

The surprisingly chilly air makes the four unique Japanese-style cottages placed on Volcano Rainforest Retreat’s sprawling ten acres that much cozier. A full kitchen (or kitchenette depending on the suite) fills each space with the smell of Kona Coffee, local fruit, coconut granola, and specialty pastries. Each suite is also outfitted with a pair of robes and slippers for those times when clothes are overrated. Leather club chairs surround the gas-burning stove for late-night talks, while mossy pergolas stand just outside the glass doors beckoning guests to enjoy the morning mist and lulls of songbirds while planning the day ahead.

The onsite staff at Volcano Rainforest Retreat are there to make sure each guest has everything they need, including local tips and tricks. The staff divulges where to find native food truck faves and shares secrets on how to get reservations at the sparse, coveted spots in the tiny village. Insider knowledge is given about Volcano National Park and the best times to arrive for spectacular views of Mauna Loa in her morning glow.

Though there are ample bucket list sights to awaken the senses on the Big Island—such as breaching whales, spinner dolphins, and steamy volcanoes—travelers would be remiss if they missed out on this secluded retreat that is icing on the cake, hidden within a magical misty forest.

Este Brings Mexico’s Coastal Region to Austin

The briny scent of the sea is absent in Central Texas, but crossing the threshold of this bright and airy seafood restaurant, one can almost catch a whiff of the salty ocean breeze.

The minds behind Suerte, owner Sam Hellman-Mass and Chef Fermin Nunez, bring Mexican seafood to East Austin with the same level of service and attention to detail patrons have come to expect of the duo. While tacos and tortas are familiar to Austinites, there is a lack of eastern Mexican cuisine, and Este sets out to fill the gap.

Every aspect of Este is well-designed to enhance the senses. It’s the minute details that make the space spectacular. The booths are clothed in textural Oaxacan fabric. Coastal-inspired art

sets the scene, and a backdrop of ocean blue and sunny yellow tiles, made in Guadalajara, makes it easy to forget where you are. A curated record collection enhances the warm ambience. But of course, the food is the star of the show. Oysters on the half shell, accompanied by salsa Negra, lime, and house made hot sauce gracing the tables, cause eyes to widen in delight at the take on a familiar coastal dish with an elegant twist.

The menu celebrates traditional dishes that will feel familiar to those in the know, but it also serves as a playground for Chef Fermin’s imagination. Sam exuberantly explains, like a

proud family member, the care and innovation Fermin brought to the creation of the Trout a la Pulla. He looked to the famous French dish Salmon with Sorrel and seamlessly translated its basic ideas into an ebullient rendition all his own. “Fermin twisted [it] around and made the Trout a la Pulla. He made it Mexican seafood where instead of salmon, it's trout. And instead of a French sorrel cream sauce, it's a dried chili cream sauce draped over top with a little bit of chili oil and trout roe. It's quickly become one of the standout dishes of all the staff and guests.”

It’s Fermin’s ideas, pushing the boundaries of what Mexican seafood can be, that make Este

exceptional. Having big dreams, Sam explains, “I look at places that are institutions in Austin, such as Uchi. Who would have ever thought that there would be a world class sushi restaurant in the middle of Texas 20 years ago? I want to recreate that in our own way, because it's exciting to do what we're doing with seafood and show people what flavors of charcoal cooking and Mexican seafood with a Texas sun can taste like in a place in Austin.”

Beyond the incredible menu and atmosphere, the hospitality draws patrons back in, time and time again. Sam smiles, “Whether you live in the neighborhood and you walk over here for a seat at the bar, or if you're driving from another part of town, we just want to receive you with open arms.”

Amongst the rowdy scene on East 6th, there’s a bar for those wanting more to sip and savor a good glass of wine.

Stepping inside LoLo and immediately there’s a temptation to make a joking connection between the low ceilings and the bar’s name. The cozy space radiates that warmth unique to visiting a trusted friend’s place. Overall, it is minimally appointed, sparing a few fantastic details that catch the eye. There’s none of the pretension or stuffiness that one might associate with a typical wine bar.

“That's the goal,” Adam Wells, one of the four partners behind LoLo, explains. LoLo’s atmosphere reflects the founders’ concerted effort to make fine wine approachable. The idea to create a relaxed wine bar one could visit for any occasion (or no occasion at all) was born when Adam, his partner Christian Moses, and friends Charles Farro and Matt Bowen found themselves habitually grabbing a glass or two at Bufalina. They would try not to stay too long, given the popularity of the pizza joint, but had nowhere else to go to enjoy a glass that wasn’t also a restaurant. Recognizing the dearth of wine bars in Austin at the time, the industrious group decided that if they were to stay in Austin, they would need to open their kind of wine bar. The rebellious spirit behind natural wines struck a chord with these

former musicians, so they turned to the attitudes of small winemakers bucking industry trends for inspiration, wanting to return to something simplistic and unaffected.

Bartenders enthusiastically take guests through their natural wines in a manner that a friend might introduce their new favorite bottle at a dinner party. The staff share their passion for the punk rock nature of natural wines with Austinites who come into LoLo, their exuberance creating a distinct atmosphere.

Whether a patron wants to let loose or unwind, LoLo guides guests on whatever journey they desire for the night. Be it a chill game of chess or a chance at an intimate setting with a live band, LoLo lets the good times flow.
