WA Charge for Change

elcome to this year’s Inspirational Issue, a celebration of the hard-working women in our lives, accompanied by the concept of sustainability and its vital role in both our community and the world at large. Sustainability isn’t a new concept; it’s a practice that was once simply a way of life. However, in our fast-paced world where convenience often takes precedence, with services like Amazon and free shipping dominating our choices, we, as consumers, have implemented a shift. I am guilty of the comfort of convenience myself. This mindset leads to a disregard for longevity and quality and prioritizes immediacy over mindful consumption. In order to see change, we have to be the change.

In this issue, we highlight many incredible women who are redefining sustainability through their commitment to quality, conscious living, and mindful investing. They are dedicated to sourcing materials that respect both the environment and the people who produce them. Whether it’s clothing free from toxic dyes, sustainable materials that reduce waste, or the practice of centering the mind and body, these women are leading the way in creating a sustainable future for our community. We are so thankful that they are on the front lines of producing the change, you will be inspired to come alongside them in this charge.

If this is your first time reading our magazine, we’re thrilled to introduce you to our mission. This issue is dedicated to uplifting women-owned and women-led businesses. As a woman-owned business ourselves, we recognize the importance of shining a light on minority-led businesses who are investing into our community to make it a better place one simple choice at a time. It takes a village to drive change in any community, and thousands of Austinites are doing their part across this city. Hopefully, through this issue, you will get to know these leaders a little better, and maybe you will be compelled to be the change you desire to see in the world.

As for the heroes who come to mind when you read about these inspirational women, show them how much they mean to you. And to you, the reader, I hope you never forget how valuable you are and how impactful your choices can be. You are inspirational.

THE REFRESHING OF AUSTIN

Where Hope Grows

Casa Marianella Provides a Safe Place for Transition

A vibrant cluster of homes tucked away in East Austin is so much more than the sum of its many indispensable beds.

Along row of colorful murals line the fence of a cozy backyard in the Govalle neighborhood where several residents are scattered about, chatting amongst themselves over a shared meal. Each piece of art, created in its own distinct style, depicts a different evocation of hope, peace, joy, and community. The collection, created by volunteers and residents alike, beautifully mimics the mission of Casa Marianella, Austin’s only shelter completely dedicated to supporting immigrants and asylum seekers.

“We’re one of the only shelters of our kind in the country, which is really unfortunate,” shares Jennifer Long. Jennifer joined the board of Casa Marianella in 1995 and became the director in 1998, serving as director, and now co-director, for over two-and-a-half decades.

Casa, for short, stands alone as one of the only shelters specifically serving immigrants. They also provide life-changing services to ease the difficulties of transitioning to life in the U.S.

Once folks arrive at Casa, the goal is to foster self-sufficiency over a period of approximately three months. They’re provided free legal services, aid in procuring healthcare, English classes, and a sense of community during what can often be a tumultuous and disorienting process.

“There should be something like this in every city because people who come to the border and ask for asylum... are given papers, without services attached. They don’t receive any housing, any food, or legal services, and they don’t get a work permit for generally a year,” says Jennifer. Casa Marianella serves as a great blueprint for what a truly empathetic shelter could be by seeing and addressing this dearth of resources needed to restart from scratch.

The mission began humbly in 1986 with one house and plenty of heart. Today, Casa owns 12 properties (including homes in the Govalle neighborhood) and works with three more on loan. Across these homes, they provide 200 beds, half of which are dedicated to housing families. Last year alone, Casa Marianella resettled 575 people from 38 countries. They’ve been serving this community for nearly three decades, and the need continues to grow. Thankfully, Casa Marianella shows no signs of halting their impact on the most vulnerable.

MAKE AN IMPACT

Austinites can pitch in by donating men’s clothes and household goods, volunteering to help maintain the homes, or purchasing items from Casa’s Amazon wishlist.

LET’S PARTY! On the last Sunday of every month, Casa Marianella hosts Convivio, a get-together for current and former residents as well as the community. It’s a time for fellowship and communitybuilding filled with live music, good food, and plenty of fun.

DISCOVER A BEAUTIFULLY REIMAGINED SPACE THAT’S A CREATIVE HUB OF ART, EVENTS, AND COMMUNAL WORKING.

The point of art is for it to be loved and accessible to everyone.”

Collective Spirit

Celebrating Five Years of Momentum

Established by atxGALS in 2019, this Latina-owned boutique art gallery, event venue, and coworking space uplifts its community of women and nonbinary artists with spacious, light-filled interiors, and round-the-year events—all from within a thoughtfully repurposed, 1930s Baptist church.

When Mónica Cineceros began looking for real estate in 2019, she was riding a wave of momentum.

Two years earlier, she founded atxGALS, a collective with the mission to create more exposure for female artists through unique and inclusive pop-up shows.

“Galentines,” the group’s first show, was a celebration of women’s talent and was a resounding commercial success. Boosted by Mónica’s marketing background, the show’s communal appreciation led to quarterly exhibitions, a flurry of positive press, and after two years, a search for a permanent space.

“I really wasn’t looking for a church,” Mónica explains, “but I knew the space had to carry a specific feeling. It needed to be truly deserving of the art that would go inside it, and I automatically saw the potential here.”

The structure, originally constructed in the 1930s as a Baptist church, had been outgrown by its congregation and was in need of extensive renovations to repurpose the space. After a thoughtful process that retained much of the architecture’s original qualities, The Cathedral opened its doors once more in October 2019, allowing atxGALS to grow from 14 to 37 artists over the next five years.

-Mónica Ceniceros

More than just an art gallery, the venue hosts a variety of events and programming, such as an open house on the last Friday of each month, intimate music and dance performances, pop-up dinners, and unique fusion events that support local artists and musicians. Additionally, the stylish venue is also available to rent for weddings, corporate events, workshops, and large celebrations.

Finally, coworking memberships are offered with day rates available, providing members access to conference rooms, phone booths, offices, and a fully-equipped kitchen, all within a unique architectural setting and surrounded by colorful local art.

Linda Natera of Sana Yoga

Sustainability comes in all shapes and sizes, but Sana Yoga founder Linda Natera’s main focus has been on the health of her community. She understands that while not everyone can afford certain luxuries, their mental health and wellness should never be something that is sacrificed. She is dedicated to providing accessible and sustainable yoga practices to underserved communities in hopes of creating a stable future, starting with mindset, movement, and intentions.

H Sustainable Serenity

er journey into the world of yoga began when someone close to her was diagnosed with mental health issues. Seeking relief from the daily stress of navigating the mental healthcare system, she attended her first yoga class. The profound sense of peace she felt at the end of her Shavasana session was unlike anything she had experienced, inspiring her to learn more about the practice.

Originally from Mexico and raised as an immigrant in California, Linda says that her past was marked by exposure to gang violence, addiction, and disease. “My background has fueled my passion for helping my community. I completed my initial yoga teacher training and began volunteering at different community centers when I moved to Austin,” she recalls.

The pandemic underscored the urgency of Linda’s mission of sustainable health practices. At the onset of lockdown, she founded Sana Yoga, offering online classes in English and Spanish. These virtual sessions later evolved into in-person classes, overcoming cultural barriers and fostering comfort and openness. Today, Sana Yoga, with its team of trauma-informed yoga practitioners and a nutritionist, is a necessary pillar in our city. It is not just a yoga class but also a community hub with plans to add counseling services, further strengthening their impact on mental health.

Linda’s commitment to making yoga affordable is unwavering. She tirelessly seeks sponsors and collaborates with larger organizations, focusing on offering free or low-cost classes. Through partnerships, grants, fundraising, and donations, Sana Yoga ensures that everyone is able to participate. “If someone can’t pay, it doesn’t matter. We want them to be there more than anything else,” she emphasizes the inclusive and supportive nature of their mission.

For Linda, promoting sustainable health practices means acknowledging the disparities her community faces. Basic needs like food and shelter take priority, but she understands the greater need for balance. “If you take care of your body and mind, you’ll have more energy to pursue what you need,” she encourages.

For those seeking to make physical and mental health changes, Linda advises to start slow, be kind to yourself, and remain flexible in your practices. “Don’t beat yourself up if you don’t always stick to your goals,” she advises. By fostering a compassionate and supportive environment, Sana Yoga continues to significantly impact the lives of many, proving that wellness, community, and sustainability go hand in hand. sanayoga.yoga @atxsanayoga

Reviving Fabrics

While designing apparel for major brands like Carolina Herrera and Anthropologie prior to opening HarperSage, Meghan Herman consistently received feedback that she needed to “femme” up her designs. As an avid soccer player and fashion enthusiast, she hated that women were consistently put into one box rather than celebrated for the multifaceted beings they are. This passion for an inclusive mindset and creating sustainable options for women has been the driving force behind her incredible brand.

When starting her clothing line, Meghan was certain about several things. First, she wanted to combat the ever-growing piles of textile waste in the fashion industry. HarperSage sources mainly “deadstock” fabrics, which are leftovers from larger brands’ canceled orders or excess production often destined for landfills. “Brands will throw away huge piles of stock if the color isn’t just right, or the weave isn’t to their liking. I personally go and hand-source these fabrics to design into them, giving them new life,” Meghan explains. By producing their line in small batches, HarperSage avoids excess inventory while also adding to the uniqueness of each piece.

Second, it was essential that HarperSage support women and women-owned businesses worldwide. She partners exclusively with Sedex certified woman-owned factories, emphasizing ethical practices and sustainability. “While I was visiting factories for previous jobs, I saw some things on the shop floor that disturbed me. I couldn’t sleep after that. Once I started HarperSage, I knew we had to be specific about who we partnered with,” Meghan admits.

In addition to the business’s sustainable practices, Meghan is committed to combating all forms of human trafficking. Once a year, HarperSage collaborates with nonprofits like Freedom Network USA, designing a specialized product to raise awareness in an important and engaging way. “We hire a survivor as a consultant to help us understand what they need,” Meghan explains. She elaborates that in a previous year, they designed a dyed silk pillowcase with an embroidered quote when their consultant pointed out the depressing, sterile sheets that are standard at many shelters. When one of the pillowcases was purchased from the store, another was donated to a local shelter. This upcoming holiday season will showcase the results of this year’s creative collaboration with their stand-in-consultant.

For Meghan, people are her passion, and that’s evident throughout the entire HarperSage brand. She advises, “Go into your community and see what needs to be done, even on a micro-level. That’s how change starts.” 1714 S Congress, Ste. B, harpersage. com, @shopharpersage

Small World, Big Impact

People and making connections are the most important things in the world.”

Tucked in East 6th Street, Bibi Kemper’s Small World Goods is not only a collection of incredible boutique finds, but it’s also a testament to the power of craftsmanship, sustainability, and the importance of ethical business practices. Bibi’s mission is clear and unwavering: to create a welcoming space that showcases products from around the world from businesses that put people over profit.

People and making connections are the most important things in the world,” Bibi emphasizes. “That’s how we’ll make a difference. It’s important to look at the materials we’re working with, but even more so, the people behind them. We want to ensure that people are treated fairly, earn livable wages, and have the chance at a happier life because of stability and opportunity. Lifting up those who haven’t had many opportunities is at the heart of what we do,” Bibi explains.

This philosophy is woven into every aspect of Small World Goods, from the

selection of products to the curated explanations of where the items came from and who created them. Bibi’s journey to establish her store began several years ago after a diverse career in costume shops, theater, restaurants, and teaching English abroad. Initially working pop-up markets and retrofitting a truck, she learned the intricacies of retail. The onset of the pandemic accelerated her plans, leading her to open the brick-and-mortar store of her dreams in 2021.

Bibi’s selection process is deeply personal. She picks items that resonate with her eclectic style, combining neutrals with

pops of color. “It’s important that everything is well-made and durable,” she says. “I choose things that I love and want to wear myself.” To bring handmade goods to Austin, Bibi works with many Asian communities where she has lived and traveled. Once she opened her shop, she saw the potential to grow by including items made by marginalized artists in America.

Environmental sustainability is another cornerstone of Small World Goods. Bibi is committed to selling only natural and environmentally safe products. “We’ve polluted the earth so horribly,” she asserts. “Instead of looking for an escape, we should focus on turning things around by using materials that are earth-friendly and biodegradable.” For Bibi,

the benefits of natural products extend beyond environmental impact. “The benefits are not just for the earth but also for you, the consumer. You feel better knowing you’re contributing to the rescue, not the problem,” she says.

Small World Goods is a celebration of human connection, ethical practices, and environmental stewardship. Bibi’s dedication to creating a positive impact is in every detail of her business, making it a cherished part of the East Austin community. 1630 E 6th St., Unit 101, smallworldgoods.com, @smallworldgoods

MOSAIC ART

Along with Lolita’s passion for creativity and sustainability, she is also a celebrated mosaic artist, workshop instructor, and studio assistant with East Austin’s Mosaic Works Her work is displayed in The Legends Project, an ongoing series of public art portraits depicting cultural leaders across various industries.

A lot of parents struggle to spend money on something that their child will outgrow so fast. I fill the void by creating something lasting and repurposed.”

Baby Steps

Lola’s Classic Babies has carved a niche in the world of retro and vintage baby wear, blending pop culture charm with a solid commitment to sustainability. Lola’s not only offers a stylish range of baby clothing and accessories but also addresses the pressing issue of waste in the garment industry. By changing the way we shop, we have the power to make a change in our community and beyond.

the company’s dedication to eco-friendly practices took a significant leap forward through its partnership with Austin Creative Reuse Center. Initially, Lolita Rodriguez, founder of Lola’s Classic Babies, began participating in the Reverse Pitch Program when faced with the challenge of dealing with textile waste. Lolita proposed a solution: transform excess material into beautiful, functional products like baby bow ties. “I wanted to create something unique and interesting from the donated clothing and scraps. These accessories are classic and don’t require a lot of outside material,” Lolita explains.

Through this collaboration, Lola’s Classic Babies has significantly reduced its waste, cutting it down to just 5% by utilizing scrap fabric in innovative ways. The process involves matching recycled fabric with new materials to create a variety of items, from bow ties and burp cloths to diaper clutches and onesies. The remnants of these projects are not discarded but repurposed into other products, such as patchwork blankets and teething toys.

For Lolita, sustainability in her business is crucial. Working with children’s clothing means dealing with items that are quickly outgrown. “A lot of parents struggle to spend money on something that their child will outgrow so fast. I wanted to fill the void by creating something lasting and re-purposed,” Lolita says. As a mother herself, she wants to create a more sustainable future for her son and aims to positively impact her community overall.

Since its inception, Lola’s Classic Babies has grown its presence beyond Austin, with wholesale orders reaching boutiques in California, New York, and Dallas. Locally, you can visit Lolita’s studio in East Austin during designated hours or find her at a booth throughout the year at various markets around the city.

For those looking to make their own businesses more sustainable, Lolita’s advice is clear: integrate materials across your products and ensure that waste from one item can be repurposed into another. “It takes some planning, but I’ve been able to create entire collections across several product lines using this strategy,” she encourages. By being intentional about excess waste and continually finding new uses for goods, businesses and individuals can significantly affect the environment. By adopting this type of mindset, consumers have an opportunity to make vast impacts on the future. Lolita hopes that it includes a community rallying together to make greener choices that last for generations to come.

Transformative Threads

Eleventh Street is full of authenticity and character. Each shop on the street is a labor of love run by passionate owners.”

Becky Ralls Tenney of Kindred Spirits

The owner of Kindred Spirits, Becky Ralls Tenney’s journey wasn’t straightforward but is as inspirational as it is transformative. Before venturing into the world of retail, Becky spent fifteen years in corporate finance, rising in the ranks over a few decades to become senior management in a global civil and environmental engineering firm. With a degree in mathematics and a passion for numbers, she thrived in her career but faced consistent burnout while trying to balance work and family. Feeling spread thin and overwhelmed, she made a bold decision to leave her job and recalibrate her life.

ifelt like I was doing everything but not actually doing it well,” Becky explains. “I wanted more freedom and autonomy, so I started searching for that.” She became a full-time stay-at-home mom, and after two years, she started working in the nonprofit sector. However, Becky’s journey took a definitive turn in May 2022 when she purchased Kindred Spirits from Nina Gordon, the owner of Take Heart, a boutique shop in East Austin.

Despite having no prior retail experience, Becky’s financial acumen and Nina’s mentorship paved the way for a successful transition.

“She’s a real friend and mentor to me. I’ve learned so much about collaboration and want to continue lifting up other women,” Becky says. Nina’s guidance on identifying quality brands and understanding the nuances of retail helped Becky build confidence and expertise in her growing business and team.

Kindred Spirits has become more than a boutique; it’s a testament to Becky’s vision of a supportive and empowering community. The selection process for the store’s merchandise is meticulous, singling out brands with sustainable production practices and fair working conditions that prioritize using natural fibers. She is adamant about working with local, women-owned, and

minority-owned businesses, ensuring that each item sold aligns with the store’s mission.

The impact of Kindred Spirits’ mission extends beyond its doors. “We are committed to giving back to the community, supporting organizations like League of Women Voters, Center for Reproductive Rights, and Black Chamber of Commerce,” Becky explains. Her goal is to ensure that her shop contributes positively to the rich history and dynamic character of Austin’s Eastside, particularly their vibrant home in the historic 11th Street district. “Eleventh Street is full of authenticity and character. Each shop on the street is a labor of love run by passionate owners,” she emphasizes.

At Kindred Spirits, Becky has found the freedom and autonomy that she once desired. The boutique is not just a business; it’s a manifestation of her desire to create a space where people feel good, find meaningful items, and experience a sense of community. Becky’s journey from corporate finance to a beloved local shop owner is a story of resilience, reinvention, and the power of pursuing one’s desire for finding community and balance in life’s grand possibilities. 1111 E 11th St., Ste. 100, kindredspirits-shop.com, @shopkindredspirits

36 go &do SISTER MUSICIANS WITH SONGS OF RESILIENCE AND EMPOWERMENT

Beyond Girl Power

Sister Musicians Empower Women to Live Boldly.

Tori, Sophia, and Tiffany Baltierra are no strangers to the spotlight. The trio of twenty-something sisters each discovered their individual musical inclinations early in life and, at the behest of their parents, came together as young girls to form the first iteration of The Tiarras: The Tiarra Girls.

With Sophia on drums, Tiffany on bass, and Tori as the lead vocalist and lyricist, the group began in 2011. In just a couple of years, the young band was performing regularly together at gigs where they were often the youngest in the lineup.

As exciting as this was, it wasn’t without challenges. “We started out so young, and we weren’t familiar with a lot of what other older musicians already knew. We were on the same lineup as them, but we weren’t really respected on the same level or treated the same...It just doesn’t start out all rainbows and butterflies,” Sophia explains.

With these early experiences under their belt, the siblings grew together as musicians and collaborators and began to develop the core values of

their project. Despite the adversity they faced, the Baltierras pushed through as a family. Themes of resilience, empowerment, and inclusivity began to shine through their songs, both lyrically and in the way they seamlessly blend an eclectic range of genres.

“Part of our mission statement was always to be a voice for those who can’t be one for themselves,” says Tiffany. The trio also makes it their goal to change the landscape for upcoming artists. “For young bands that we meet, we hope to create something completely different for them because they deserve the same respect as everyone else…´the respect` we didn’t get when we started,” Sophia adds.

At the same time the band grew its audience and began booking larger gigs like ACL, the Baltierra girls were entering young adulthood. They de-

cided to drop the ‘Girls’ and became simply ‘The Tiarras.’

It’s a unique experience playing music with siblings. “We trust each other a lot. And because of the way we’re close in age, we share an understanding of where we are in life...We’re not afraid to tell each other what we’re feeling,” says Tiffany. This trust lends itself to emotionally impactful, heartfelt songs. It also makes for incredible synergy on stage. “If we’re messing up on a song or if the crowd’s not into it, or if we’re late to the gig, we’re always going to find a way to make it work.” Tori laughs and adds, “Plus we’re goofy with each other and have telepathy powers whenever we’re performing.”

Sometimes we find ourselves in situations where we want to feed off the energy out in the crowd or in the environment that we're in, and it's not doing it for us, but we look at each other and we're like, okay, we're here together. We can do this, and we're going to have a good show.”

-Tiffany Baltierra

I realized when we opened how much we can affect people’s lives just by doing the little things, sharing small kindnesses. The world needs it now, and we’ve made it a part of our mission to look for ways to share that sense of real care with our guests.” -Vicki Faust

The Frances Modern Inn offers cozy and curated stays, thoughtfully attentive staff, and an intimate Italian dining experience via their stylish new restaurant: Poeta.

“This place is named after my grandmother, Frances,” explains Vicki Faust, founder of The Frances Modern Inn, relaxing into the tufted turquoise sofa anchoring one corner of the spacious suite. “She was the best listener, and her door was always open.”

The hyper-decorated suite, one of 14 curiously unique rooms at The Frances Modern Inn, is moody and provocative, with deep vibrant colors and intricately rich wallpaper setting off a bevy of charming, old-world accents. Instead of kaleidoscopic, the room feels composed, sophisticated, and calm—a testament to the care taken throughout the interiors of the property which is designed by Kim Lewis.

Located in the heart of East 11th Street’s cultural district, the boutique hotel opened its doors in the summer of 2023 and quickly hit the ground running. By December, Vicki added chefs Krystal Craig, Ian Thurwachter, and Kevin Donovan into the mix, launching a restaurant partnership on the ground level called Poeta.

Yet, the quality of the decor, amenities, and dining—all exceptional—is not what makes the hotel unlike any other. The secret ingredient is more elusive, yet also palpable. At some point, it just asserts itself; there is an earnestness about the whole place that bubbles up from its entire staff,

SIDEWALK SERVICE: Just in time for summer, try Poeta’s gelato trailer parked out front!

STAYCATION, ANYONE? A walkable location to luxury amenities and some of the cutest and most historic spots in town, including Franklin Barbecue, makes The Frances Modern Inn a great choice for a recharging in-town respite.

from the custodians, to the hosts, to the chefs, up to Vicki.

There’s a sense of pride and kindness at play in every interaction, subtle but ever present. Somehow, it feels a little bit like coming home. In a city with no shortage of branded hotel experiences, the authentic hospitality resonant at The Frances Modern Inn makes it a gem among gems and a perfect place for a staycation, travelers, or out-of-town guests.

UNICO 20°87°

A Gem on the Riviera Maya

A trip to UNICO 20°87° Hotel Riviera Maya can be whatever a traveler wants: a jumping off point to an unspoiled tropical paradise, a daytime party with luxurious evenings, a work-from-home playground, or a relaxed and quiet recharge at an elegant adults-only resort. A combination of these experiences should be considered to make the most of this eye-catching destination, and the staff stands by to provide the services required to achieve whatever type of stay a guest desires.

The airy lobby is anchored by the rich wood-toned bar and ringed with comfortable couches, old-school table games, and a billiard table, and operates like a spacious community gathering place for guests checking in and evening hangs alike. The bar and lounge area is appointed with indigenous Mayan pottery, which the area is historically known for, and life-sized renderings of the elusive jaguar native to the Yucatan Peninsula.

Bartenders can whip up one of the best margaritas you’ve ever tasted. The concierge-driven check-in helps guests explore the range of activities, services, and dining options, takes reservations, and ensures guests get the high-touch UNICO experience. We sipped on a KIIMAKOOL (a balanced concoction of smoky Mezcal, pineapple juice, lime, albumin, passion fruit syrup, hibiscus bitters) and planned our dinners, sampling all of the evening restaurants: Mexican/Yucatan, Mediterranean, and Japanese. Each offers its own unique take and flavor palette on familiar styles, like sushi rolls with local seafood and flourishes of citrus or an Italian starter with tuna crudo “puttanesca style.” The variety of on-site dining is refreshing, though local Aztec and Mayan flavors shine. A dinner at Cueva Siete or a light lunch at the all-day 20°87° of achiote and spice-rubbed Tikin Xic fish steamed in parchment paper, cooling aguachile verde (a shrimp-based ceviche), and a simple lime soup, are regional specialties that you won’t find at any local Austin Tex-Mex spot. The menu helpfully denotes proud local dishes.

The grounds, meticulously kept and serene, back up to a national seashore where waves crash up to a forested area studded with rock formations and laden with lounge chairs. Boardwalks

carve a pathway to the clear Caribbean Sea. Poolgoers are lulled into a sense of paradise, while frequently surprised by tropical visitors like the ringtailed Coatis (a member of the raccoon family) and iguanas warming in the sun. Variety, again, provides options for whatever experience one desires with three separate pools, one for rowdy water games, another with lounge chairs and light music close to the snack bar, and a quiet pool separated by arbors with a swim-up bar and a mix of shaded and sunny areas providing getaway nooks for the ultimate seclusion-paperbacks welcome.

The spa offers a range of addons for those looking to splurge on pampering, though the free features are elevated enough to wow guests. Separate men’s and women’s areas offer a sauna, hot tub, hydro circuit, mud bath, eucalyptus steam room, and cold plunge in the luxurious country-club level locker-room adjoining the gym.

Staying on-site is a satisfying and diverse experience, though off-site guests can explore sights of the Riviera. A side trip to the now-famed Tulum National Park requires some additional trekking, but the effort is decidedly worth it. Yes, there are crowds and wouldbe guides offering dubious advice and services, but follow the lines of visitors, and you’ll reach true paradise: a pristine beach, cliffs plunging down to the turquoise waters with a few boats bobbing at anchor.

The quick direct flight and a pre-arranged ride with the hotel take the hassle out of visiting this jewel on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. From there, the level of exertion and adventure is up to you.

The Art of Hosting

A red neon sign beckons diners across the threshold of this unassuming microrestaurant situated on a sleepy, yet growing, stretch of East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Inside, a partially-exposed kitchen faces an intimate dining area, warmed by the heat of food preparation and the homey hospitality that emanates from the co-owners: Chef Je Wallerstein and her husband and business partner, Silas Wallerstein.

The cozy space seats 16 guests and welcomes epicureans on a culinary adventure five nights a week. Each evening, Fabrik hosts two dinner seatings. The menu is always prix fixe, though guests can choose whether their dining experience consists of five or seven courses.

Among fine dining establishments, Fabrik stands out for their fully plantbased menu and commitment to sustainability. Chef Je first gravitated towards a vegetarian (and eventually vegan) diet at a young age, which sparked her interest in the kitchen.

“When I was a little kid, I wanted to follow a plant-based diet. And my mom, I think she was just trying to challenge me on it. She was like, oh, then you have to cook for yourself because I don’t know what to cook for you. I actually got excited about it and really inspired,” she explains.

Chef Je’s dishes are a feast for all the

senses. Her creations are never made to mimic omnivorous dishes but rather to let produce shine all on its own. Taking influence from her experiences in high-end kitchens across the world, Je marries seemingly disparate flavors and techniques to bring out the unique qualities of her fresh ingredients. Her artist’s eye and attention to detail make for visually stunning plating that enhances the experience.

Though the restaurant first planted its roots by tapping into the growing vegan community in Austin, their clientele is certainly not limited to plant-based adherents. Chef Je notes, “I think we were pleasantly surprised to see just how diverse the audience has become. People come just [because] they’re excited about more sustainable cuisine, or people come [because] they’re interested in fine dining, and they want to have a tasting menu.”

Fabrik’s menu changes with the seasons. Chef utilizes Farm to Table Texas, a distributor that connects local farmers to Texas

restaurants, in order to keep her ingredients fresh and locally-sourced. Though the menu rotates through a vibrant color wheel of produce throughout the year, the one constant on the Fabrik menu is the focaccia. The freshly baked bread is the perfect mix of slightly crunchy on the outside and spongy and pliable on the inside. There’s something inherently indulgent and satisfying about a whole course dedicated to bread that feeds more than the stomach.

The Wallersteins opened their doors to the community in August 2023 and have been adopted as one of the most exciting new fine dining establishments in the city, a testament to the expertise and craft Chef Je consistently delivers. Je says with a smile, “A lot of people say that they can taste the love in the food…I’m here as soon as I get up, basically just working the whole day to try to create that kind of experience. That’s the best compliment: that guests can feel all the love and attention that goes into everything here.”

A lot of people say that they that can taste the love in the food.”

Restaurant Restrooms: So Much More than Flavorful Food & Sweet Sips

East Austin’s culinary scene is renowned, but the restrooms are equally deserving of praise. These seven local eateries have elevated the humble washroom to an art form, offering stunning art, unexpected amenities, and immersive lighting.

1 REVIVAL COFFEE

If pink is your favorite color, then you are in the right place. Revival Coffee’s pink branding goes beyond the cups and furniture, to covering each and every wall, including the restroom. Custom-designed wallpaper with biting lip motifs had owner Gabriela Bucio inspired by Lana Del Rey’s song “Summertime Sadness,” further beckoning a neon sign featuring the quote “kiss me hard before you go” as the perfect final touch. revivalcoffee.com | 1405 E 7th St.

2 JUNIPER

Their bold and contemporary flair embodied in the Northern Italian dishes doesn’t stop at the table. The blues and grays in their color palette extend across the restaurant and into the restrooms on meticulously hand-made wallpaper that is a work of art in itself. Bordered by black tile and hardware, the accent wall is given its well-deserved moment to shine with intricate depictions of Italian landscapes. juniperaustin.com |

3 SUERTE

As a restaurant known for its bold Mexican-inspired flavors by nationally acclaimed Chef Fermin Nunez, Suerte

goes beyond the kitchen to expand its soothing coastal aesthetic into the rest of the restaurant’s interior design, including their restrooms. Encased in maximalist wallpaper with unique designs that might be reminiscent of an iconic Hawaiian shirt print, this restroom is a vibrant and unexpected oasis, adding a playful touch to the overall dining experience. suerteatx.com | 1800 E 6th St.

4 LA BARBECUE

Known as a barbecue icon in East Austin since 2012, it might come as a surprise that a hidden gem resides beyond the pits at La Barbecue. Smothered in paint rather than sauce, their restrooms are enveloped in vibrant colorful murals courtesy of artists Xavier Schipani in one and Zuzu in the other. Color-changing lights create an immersive art experience as the mural patterns morph and evolve with the light.

5 HOME SLICE

More than just an authentic New York-style pizzeria, Home Slice embodies an ambiance that could be described as an ode to Andy Warhol’s pallet. Dark reds and velvet interiors are adorned with modern twists to classical fine art. In addition to the lush interior design, the restroom offers any last-minute necessities, from hair spray to bobby pins, all at your fingertips on a red marble sink with a stunningly iconic brass swan faucet. homeslicepizza.com | 501 E 53rd St.

6 FUKUMOTO

Serving traditional Japanese cuisine since 2015, Chef and Owner Kazu Fukumoto strives to share his passion for culinary delights. Like their elegant sushi, Fukumoto’s restroom

is the epitome of crisp simplicity with classic-white tile walls and backlit mirrors that make the whole room glow. A beautiful marble slab sink adds a modern and organic element, while birch tree-patterned wallpaper gives the illusion of a higher ceiling. fukumotoaustin.com | 514 Medina St.

7 KITTY COHEN’S

It’s no surprise that a ‘70’s-themed cocktail bar would go all out for their restroom designs. Kitty Cohen’s is a classic selfie sanctuary with its vibrant pink flamingo wallpaper. As a testament to its popular photogenic appeal, the bar was able to host a selfie fundraiser for SAFE Austin. Adding to the retro allure is a dazzling miniature chandelier, a pinup, and sultry portraits of Burt Reynolds. kittycohens.com | 2211 Webberville Rd.

Expanding Palates

Bottles from the Southern Hemisphere

Nearly two decades ago, Buenos Aires Cafe acquainted the city with its beloved Argentinian cuisine. A decade later, their take on Amaro cocktails with the Milonga Room wowed Austinites once more. Now, the team behind it is ready to pour future favorites with wines from South America through their wine club, Vinos Del Sur.

“When we opened the restaurant, we served five wines,” Paola Guerrero-Smith, co-owner of Buenos Aires Cafe, reflects, “because we couldn’t get good Argentinian wine.” Argentinian wine was still mainly moving domestically at that time, needing more buyers to expand abroad. Today, the wine scene in South America has grown both in production and demand, paving the way to import plenty of tasty selections. A stand out is the Argentinian take on Malbec, with its dark, fruity palate. But Paola’s wine club, Vinos Del Sur, takes guests well past this familiar red and explores the variety of exquisite flavors from her country and across the vast landscape of South America. Austinites can expect to sample bottles from Chile, Brazil, and what Paola believes to be the next great wine nation, Uruguay, all while relaxing in the moody atmosphere of the Milonga Room.

The underground bar is the perfect space to

connect with an established sense of culinary adventure the Buenos Aires team cooks up in their space on East 6th. It’s inviting and intimate, but in a South American hospitable way, it’s like being invited into the most exciting person’s living room, creating a sense of familiarity without cutting the thrill that Paola brings with each sample. “I’m breaking [South American wines] down to be approachable,” Paola explains. She often asks: Do you gravitate to a specific type of wine? Then she can suggest the South American equivalent. Her sense of familial hospitality shines as she curates the selection so that even the most novice guests can leave with a rich knowledge of South American wine, making the wine club not just a tasting experience, but also a journey.

That keen, inviting, educating philosophy has long been the key to Buenos Aires Cafe’s success. From the first empanadas served in the cafe to the Amaro-based cocktails flowing in the Milonga Room, this team knows how to bring the

delicious flavors of South America to Austin. Continuing that core mission, all the bottles Paola shares in the monthly wine tastings will inevitably bring Austinites to covet the avant-garde and traditional styles rising from South American wine-making stars. On par with her culinary endeavors, years down the road, it will feel like these wines have always been a local favorite.
