Where Flavors are Made
Barbecue season is upon us, and because summer is in full swing, this issue is packed with flavor and creativity when it comes to this particular food obsession. East Austin is a barbecue mecca, so we did our due diligence and ate at so many places. R&D is a tough job at times, but someone’s gotta do it. The offerings are far and wide and oh so good! Disclaimer: The following photos and words may not be able to do justice to the smoky flavor explosions you’re about to experience. But we try, and you should too! And as for the pitmasters, their stories are just as good as their smoky concoctions.
Our cover features JNL Barbecue, where pitmaster John Bates combines traditional smoking techniques with innovative East Coast flavors to create a truly unique barbecue experience topped with chicharrones. We also visit KG BBQ, known for its fusion of Egyptian flavors into the East Austin barbecue scene, offering dishes like Pomegranate Glazed Pork Ribs and Egyptian-spiced lamb bacon. We also highlight Distant Relatives, where Chef Damien Brockway draws inspiration from African culinary traditions, serving up soulful dishes that tell a story of heritage thickened by otherworldly spices. These stories not only highlight the culinary talent brimming here but also their commitment to preserving the rich history of Texas barbecue.
In the art+entertainment section, we are excited to feature the Cherrywood Treehouse Art Studio, a peaceful haven for creativity nestled in an East Austin neighborhood. This unique studio offers various workshops catering to local and virtual participants across the country, making art accessible to all. And let’s not forget about a revamped historic cinema that’s bringing back the nostalgia of single cinema screenings, while simultaneously nurturing creativity and community.
Our guide to the best summer soups and salads is a must-read. And as we move into the warmer months, you’re going to want to know the six best watering holes to take a dip. Whether you’re looking for a light, refreshing meal, a cold treat to beat the heat, or something a bit more hearty, our carefully curated food issue will not disappoint. These dishes, crafted by some of East Austin’s tastiest eateries, will surely delight your taste buds.
Lastly, we continue to be amazed by the community spirit that defines the Eastside. Thank you for being part of the EASTside Magazine family. We hope this issue inspires you to explore, enjoy, and engage with an incredible community that makes East Austin so special.
Enjoy!

Lunch on the Weekends
Over 58,000 meals and counting
Grown out of her home during the pandemic, Kristen Starr began Sunday Lunchbox, birthed out of an acknowledgment that she had a luxury many do not have: the access and ability to give her son a healthy lunch every day.
In November 2020, Kristen was making lunch for her son, and the idea hit her. She says, “In a way, it was a long time in the making in terms of building up the background skills and motivation and passion, but it was really founded overnight.” She got to work that day, executing the concept of what it would take to feed kids who qualify for free meals during school days on the weekend also. She’s proud of the fact that in just under five
months, their first delivery on April 25, 2021, fed seven families, and Sunday Lunchbox has not missed a week since.
These days, Sunday Lunchbox has a much larger movement. Kristen and her team of volunteers now serve around 100 families a week out of a large kitchen space where dozens of volunteers help prepare food and coordinate deliveries.
Kristen explains that they infuse dignity in their process, ensuring that families choose what they want from the Sunday Lunchbox store, rather than the choice being stripped from them. According to Kristen, their store comprises of an assortment of options because of their partners. For example, “Some of our smaller farms want to just give out fresh local produce, but they don’t have a
nonprofit arm that can manage relationships and delivery, so they give us fresh meat and veggies that go directly to our store for families to order.”
For Eastsiders looking to get involved, Kristen says, “All of our products are things we came up with by being creative.” She adds, “If you have a skill, or something you’re passionate about and you want to be involved in food justice, we will find a way for you to be part of our family and leverage that skill!”

DID YOU KNOW?
According to Kristen, “Sunday Lunchbox is the only food justice nonprofit that has a product line.” They don’t just rescue food and redistribute. Sunday Lunchbox turns produce into a product with a longer shelf life, like a jam, dehydrated produce, or baked goods. And then they have the new product on their shelves for families.

Art in the Clouds
Where Creativity Blooms
In the heart of East Austin’s Cherrywood neighborhood, a serene haven for creativity has taken root: Cherrywood Treehouse Art Studio. This unique studio, nestled among the treetops, is the brainchild of an art enthusiast-turned-entrepreneur who found her calling through a blend of passion, community, and a touch of serendipity.
The story of Cherrywood Treehouse Art Studio began when Rachel Graham, an art graduate from Georgia College & State University, discovered her love for teaching and sharing artistic expression while living in East Austin. After a stint in the tech industry, teaching and leading events in the creative realm beckoned, ultimately leading her to pursue her passion full-time. “I discovered right out of school that I loved to teach and expose people to different mediums of creativity,” says Rachel. The name “Cherrywood Treehouse” reflects not just the physical space of a second-floor studio amongst old oak trees but also a state of mind—a playful and elevated retreat from the everyday hustle.
MINIMALIST OR MAXIMALIST? Whether you enjoy the swirling colors of acrylic pouring, guided landscape painting, or prefer the clean look of textured plaster, Cherrywood Treehouse has several rotating workshops. Grab some friends and head to an open studio session that will delve into acrylic painting, watercolor, printmaking, and more.
The studio’s mission is to reignite the spark of creativity in adults, offering a range of workshops designed to inspire and guide participants through artistic exploration. She believes that many adults have lost touch with the joy of play, especially in the realm of art. By providing quality instruction and a relaxed environment, this studio aims to lower the barriers to creativity and encourage a sense of artistic freedom. Rachel explains, “I created this art studio to be a
tranquil, peaceful place for people to tap into the moment.”
But Cherrywood Treehouse is more than just an art studio; it’s also a hub for community engagement. Through regular workshops and events, locals and visitors alike can participate in guided sessions on everything from acrylic pouring to textured plaster art. The studio’s welcoming atmosphere encourages everyone to explore their inner artist, regardless of skill level. “I
have found that giving examples and basic instruction helps lift the pressure from people nervous about making art. I also use high-quality supplies so participants can really enjoy the process of creation,” she points out.
Virtual options bring the Cherrywood Treehouse vibe to participants across the country, breaking through the barriers of location. The studio also offers corporate workshops tailored to team-building and creative

bonding experiences.
Looking ahead, the studio is expanding its impact with plans for an innovative Art Camp in a Box. This initiative will empower kids to explore their creativity and build confidence through art, underscored by the studio’s commitment to fostering creativity at every stage of life.
As Cherrywood Treehouse continues to flourish, it’s clear that this is more than just a studio; it’s
a sanctuary where imaginations soar, and the journey of creating art is celebrated. Next time creativity is at a stand-still, consider stepping into the treetops of Cherrywood Treehouse Art Studio, where the paint flows freely and creativity knows no bounds.

Making Movie Magic
An old, retro movie experience premieres in East Austin.
Single-screen cinemas have suffered a slow demise over several decades. Major multiplexes—with their veritable buffet of movie options and proliferating creature comforts—have indelibly changed the movie-going experience. But to Josh Frank, there’s something these neighborhood cinemas have that the bigwigs don’t, and with Eastside Cinema, he wants to bring that back.
Being a figure in Austin’s indie film scene, Josh opened his first local cinema in the 90s—in an alleyway off Cesar Chavez—then went on to found Austin’s beloved Blue Starlight Drive-In. When the managers of Rosewood’s neighborhood Millennium Complex contacted Josh about a theater that had been sitting vacant in the building since 2010, he said yes. “I’ve been playing in this playground of bringing the art of the 50s and 60s drive-in cinema back.” He thought, “What if I could do the same thing with a 90s single-screen neighborhood cinema and show Austin the beauty of that experience?”
The theater itself was a perfect relic. It was shut down in the wake of digital projection’s ascent and had remained largely untouched since. “It was just incredible…this 110-seat theater was just in perfect condition. It was as if it
had never closed,” Josh recalls. Up in the projection booth, the perfect 35mm projector sat casting a blank stare at a blank screen.
Josh had an instant vision. This could be a community space, a haven for local film clubs, filmmakers, and fellow curators. So, he partnered with Millennium to get the space up and running with the hard caveat that the signature 90s fold-up seats stay put. After a minor lobby upgrade and some “signature mood lighting,” Eastside Cinema was open to the public.
It wasn’t until Josh watched his first film in the theater— Godzilla X—that it really struck him what kind of experience he was resurrecting: a special one, a shareable one. No plush recliner or swiveling snack tray separating you from your neighbor or the story itself. “There’s something about
THE FILM BUG
Josh tracks his interest in film back to his childhood, where he’d make “Indiana Jones sequels” with his friends on an old VHS camera. After graduating from film school at SUNY Purchase, he chose Austin over Hollywood, attracted to the DIY scene of the 90s. “[It] was full of awesome rock bands, theater companies, and really cool stuff,” Josh recalls. “And that’s really where I developed my skills for doing what I do.”
WANT SOME
SCREEN TIME?
Eastside Cinema invites local filmmakers and film clubs to use the theater for screenings and events. As long as you can fill seats, you can apply. It’s time to rally friends for your next movie night.

the way that single-screen neighborhood cinemas were built that really gives you a whole different wonderful, warm, cinema hug-of-anexperience that you don’t get in modern theaters,” he gushes.
Since Eastside Cinema opened in December 2023, they’ve had 14 local curators bringing a wide range of programming, from new releases to cult and classic films. Josh hopes more people—and especially film festivals that come through town—will catch wind of the theater and appreciate the singular experience.
“That’s how I’ve always tackled what I do. I think of it as giving

people an experience, and the theater is the set piece,” Josh explains.
“That’s really what I enjoy about it.”
By bringing nostalgia, accessibility, community, and entertainment into one space, he’s set the stage for Eastside Cinema to become Austin’s next local gem.
“Now it’s really just about the community lifting this theater up by using it,” says Josh, “and by continuing to come out and support [local business].”

Locals know BARBECUE
From the big names to rising stars, culinary talents in East Austin are taking Texas barbecue to new heights.
WRITER DEVEN WILSON | EDITOR ASHLEY BOWLING | PHOTOGRAPHER BAPTISTE DESPOIS
East Austin’s food scene has expanded its menu tremendously over the years, bringing new and exciting culinary cultures to this corner of the city. Yet, there is one flavor that has continued to not only keep up but also embrace the changes without sacrificing tradition. Locally-grown pitmasters may not always stay on this side of Lady Bird Lake, but their legacy remains rooted in lessons learned on the Eastside, inspired by its rich history in barbecue. East Austin itself has been blessed by the barbecue gods. This mecca of smoked meats boasts legendary pitmasters who continue their traditions directly or indirectly through generations. The long-lasting love for barbecue goes so far that you’ll even find brisket slipped into many culinary delights, including drink offerings, making menus across town even more mouth-watering.
Sticking Around THE ICONIC HEAVY WEIGHTS
DID YOU KNOW? At Christmas time, Stiles Switch does a ‘12 days of smoked meats’ collab with other local spots like Bird Bird Biscuit, Eldorado Cafe, and Bonhomie to come up with some crafty smoky creations.
Local Tip: Try Micklethwait’s Citrus Beet Salad or smoked pulled lamb.
The Trailer Stands Strong. Micklethwait Craft Meats
After twelve years of accolades and admiration across Texas, the charming trailer Tom Micklethwait built continues to be a beacon for barbecue.
“Ididn’t have a direct plan,”
Tom Micklethwait, owner and pitmaster of Micklethwait Craft Meats, shares about the early days. He recalls thinking, “I will open this trailer, build a name, and then look for a restaurant space.” While still in his trailer, he did build more than a name for himself. Tom has cooked up a barbecue landmark.
However, Tom and his crew refuse to rest on their laurels or let building out their bar, Saddle Up, steal any of the laser focus it takes to deliver stellar smoked meats. “Part of evolving is keeping it interesting for us and being engaged with it,” Tom elaborates on their growth. Keeping it interesting involves infusing lemon and poppy seeds into their coleslaw, a combo typically reserved for a morning muffin. Such playful additions to their famous sides give an often-ignored accompaniment a reason for customers to balance out room in their stomachs with everything else on their tray.
Tradition and innovation meld together in Tom’s Tex-Czech sausage. Adding a tangy zest of tangerine to a blend of lamb and beef, this billionaire-rich flavor profile explains the line of foodies waiting in the simmering summer sunshine for a bite. This playful approach to tradition has turned Tom’s trailer into a landmark all on its own.
The tradition for barbecue buffs to make a stop at Micklethwait over the years shows no signs of stopping. There’s no question that wherever he lands trailer, brick and mortar, or both those who are in the know will hunt down Tom’s benchmark brisket and colorful sides. 1309 Rosewood Ave., craftmeatsaustin.com
The Iconic Heavy Weights Live On…
Franklin Barbecue
This landmark brisket joint has churned out a hearty roster of rising stars in the barbecue scene. As they continue to cement their status as an icon in the barbecue capital, it might be time to hold official graduation ceremonies so the slow-cooking world knows who to look for as the talent graduates into their own pitmasters.
Does the savory rub for Franklin Barbecue’s brisket season future pitmasters? Aaron Franklin’s landmark menu item must hold a recipe for success since many who are in on the secret advance straight into smoked meat stardom. Their line-worthy brisket has paved a path for new pitmasters to shine.
Local Tip: Try their Espresso BBQ Sauce.
^ Mum Foods’ Brown Butter Chess Pie
La Barbecue
LeAnn Mueller carried La Barbecue into the smoked meat pantheon with sensational sausages, cementing its claim as a barbecue spot for pilgrimage to Austin. Now gone, LeAnn’s legacy lives on as lines continue to form in the hopes of grabbing a legendary spicy link.

EVER WONDER WHAT A PITMASTER EATS FOR DINNER?
After long days of slow-cooking meats, Ben says he tries to eat as much seafood as possible to counter delectably meaty meals.
The Rising Stars MAKING A NAME IN A CITY
Local Tip: Try JNL’s Rum Banana Pudding.
The Legend Lives On JNL Barbecue
Building barbecue pits out of riverbed stones with his family gave Pitmaster Ben Lambert a natural edge to break into the game with his trailer, JNL Barbecue.
“JNL, that’s James Nolan Lambert. We named the place after my dad,” Ben, co-owner and pitmaster, proudly reminisces. ”People would drive from San Antonio to get a plate of my dad’s food.” Ben’s father passed when he was only 16. At the time, according to Ben, there was still so much more to learn about barbecue to make a career out of it. Eventually, he found himself in charge of brisket at Franklin Barbecue. While plenty of names have come out of the iconic spot off East 11th, Ben wanted to stand out from the pack of protégés.
Taking all he learned, Ben shifted focus eastward to learn from the greats in the Carolinas and bridge the gap between two pillars of American barbecue. “I learned
how to cook a whole hog from Rodney Scott (widely considered one of the best pitmasters in the nation) and Michael Letchworth (another legend),” Ben grins. More locally, he spent a few weeks studying with the team behind Bangers to get a grip on how to do sausage well.
The fruit of this never-ending education blooms in the form of a drool-worthy tray of smoked meats such as his house-cured Smoked Bacon and vinegar-based Al Pastor Pork Ribs with tasty sides like Mom’s Green Beans that demonstrate he’s earned one of the top spots cooking east of I-35. Despite several years in their trailer and their former brick-and-mortar, Ben continues experimenting and learning. “I still don’t think I’ve ever seen a perfect recipe out of the 110,000 I’ve cooked so far,” he humbly shares. As Ben continues to improve upon barbecue perfection, it’s clear to all who congregate at JNL that every bite is like a lesson in what barbecue should taste like. If Ben should ever strike perfection in his pit, the world might not be able to handle it.

Lockhart has a new palate, and it’s pink. Barbs is moving in.
It would be easy to assume the stronghold for Texas barbecue would resist any change to the long-held gospel of smoking meat or that anyone who bucks tradition would be run out of town. For Chuck Charnichart, pitmaster of Barbs BQ and game changer, Lockhart couldn’t wait for Barbs to move in.
In Lockhart, the locals started advocating for Chuck’s dream, saying, ‘Oh, this is the perfect place for you.’ Chuck recalls, “They really put an initiative out there to bring Barbs to Lockhart.” That initiative even included established Lockhart names like Old Pal Bar, actively scouting locations on Barbs’ behalf. That kind of community support only reflects a fraction of Chuck’s budding talents for barbecue.
Growing up in South Texas, Chuck had a taste for binge-worthy flavors but found inspiration to take on a male-dominated field after a chance employment at Eastside legend Franklin Barbecue. “I saw Sarah [Petmecky] go off cooking ribs,” Chuck says. She remembers looking back at her early days. “[Sarah] is one woman out of eight guys, and the one who opened my eyes to the idea that it could also be my thing.” Eventually, Chuck accepted that fate was herding her towards being a pitmaster, and she started hosting pop-ups to see if the world wanted a taste of what she had to offer.
Stiles Switch’s Sweet Serrano Fried Brussel Sprouts
Interstellar BBQ’s Smoked Scallop Potatoes: thinly sliced potatoes layered with cream, parmesan, and garlic, smoked to a golden brown
JNL Barbecue’s Chicheronnes Mac & Cheese
After receiving an overwhelming wave of positivity, opening up a more permanent space was the obvious next step. Firming up her menu, the playful and pink space on Lockhart’s town square sees a snaking line form as patrons eagerly debate which items to order. Trays arrive at tables with a rarely seen pop of green from their famous green spaghetti, inspired by her mother’s verde sauce.
That South Texas spice pairs perfectly with the tastebud-bombing Molotov Pork Ribs. “They’re called Molotov because it’s truly a flavor explosion.” Chuck elaborates, “I was thinking about the pork ribs in particular and the addicting spiciness and acidity from Hot Cheetos.” So Chuck took that flavor profile and ran with it, concocting ribs that cause such a stir that people are willing to get right back in line for more. 102 E Market St., Lockhart TX, barbsbq.com

Brotherton Day in Pflugerville.
The Pit Eternal Brotherton’s Black Iron Barbecue
After Brotherton’s Black Iron Barbecue lost legendary founder and pitmaster, John Brotherton, two young apprentices led the charge to continue a legacy of game-changing flavors he started.
Twenty-eight and twenty-five are hardly ages associated with barbecue pitmasters. This career covets a long history of smoking meats and prioritizes those who are well-seasoned over the years, but despite their ages, Bobby Holley and Dirseo Garay hit the grill running after being thrust into their new roles following John’s sudden passing in early 2024.
“It was a tremendous loss,” Bobby reflects. “John not only was the name and face of the business, but first and foremost, he was also a very clear-cut leader of the whole operation.”
At the same time, they also had to make strides through their grief to ensure John’s hard-earned legacy doesn’t burn out. “Every single f’ing day, from open to close,” Bobby declares with pride, “is for John,” a man who was so dedicated to his craft and community. It was that community support and their sheer determination that kept Brotherton’s lights on. “We’ve had a CPA reach out doing all of our books basically pro bono,” Bobby continues, adding that the barbecue community is always available if they need extra hands. “Hands,” Dirseo
explains, “left after John passed,” leaving them to pick up even more slack in John’s absence.
Even though the menu had to be scaled back for the Brotherton’s team to stay operational, guests can expect both a tenacious dedication to every aspect of the barbecue process John set up, including his babies: brisket Loaded Grilled Cheese and Texas Bahn Mi. Both sammies vividly explain how the flavor profile of brisket can make a delicious home in anything. The grilled cheese simply adds a meatier dimension to an American classic, while the Bahn Mi shows off how the richness of meat can pair well with the lightness of the traditionally bright bite of carrots and cucumber inside a doughy baguette.
Brotherton’s approach to barbecue brought an excitement to see how they push its boundaries, and John’s playful spirit will continue to move forward by both Bobby and Dirseo. “I definitely see us exploring fusion.” Bobby adds, “Whether it’s Asian fusion, Mexican fusion, or whatever it is, we want to continue to put great barbecue on plates and stay true to John.” 15608 Spring Hill Ln., Ste. 105, pflugervillebarbecue.com

Crafting Confidence One Suit at a Time
In the center of Austin’s eclectic fashion scene resides Soto & Co., a custom suit and accessories shop founded by a visionary entrepreneur passionate about individuality and craftsmanship. With a shop in East Austin, Soto & Co. isn’t just a place to find custom suits; it’s a cultural intersection where personal style meets community pride.
BEHIND THE SEAMS
In the world of fashion, off-therack items are mass-produced and fail to accommodate diverse body shapes. However, at Soto & Co., the focus shifts to the shoulders—the essential foundation of a suit—where they excel in tailoring personalized solutions. From custom linings to bespoke lapel widths, every detail serves as a personal expression of the wearer’s identity.
After graduating from the University of Texas, Rick Soto ventured to New York City, where the fastpaced world of advertising exposed him to the artistry and precision of bespoke tailoring. Inspired by the immaculate suits adorning the city’s professionals, he combined his artistic inclinations with a desire to dress well, birthing his first necktie collection.
After returning to Texas, Rick embarked on a mission to bring his vision to life as his ambitions burned brightly. Weekends were dedicated to showcasing handmade flower lapels, pocket squares, and neckties at local fashion events. Networking led him to collaborate with a suit company, honing his skills before eventually launching Soto & Co. Rick says, “The company I was working for offered me a severance package, so I decided to take that money and purchase a truck, which I have been operating out of since 2016. I’ve been riding the wave ever since!”
The essence of Soto & Co. lies in the transformative difference between off-the-rack garments and custom tailoring. Rick is committed to building suits around the individual, offering tailored solutions that reflect personal style. From monogrammed linings to custom lapel widths, every detail is an expression of the wearer.
One of Rick’s favorite accessories is a chic pocket square. “Pocket squares add a whole new element to the suit by mixing and matching designs. There are no rules!” he exclaims. The materials for suits and price ranges at Soto & Co. are as diverse as its clientele, ensuring that custom-made suits are affordable on many budgets. Quality is paramount, ensuring durability and investment value. Fabrics are carefully selected, a testament to the ethos that a well-crafted suit is more than attire; in fact, it’s a legacy.

For Rick, being a minority business owner in East Austin is a point of pride. “Having my business on the Eastside adds to the city’s evolution while preserving the culture. The Eastside is one of the last places in Austin that still has that ‘Keep Austin Weird’ vibe,” he explains. Indeed, East Austin is a place where one can dress up or down, unwind, and connect—an ideal backdrop for Soto & Co.’s ethos of style and inclusivity.
With expansion plans for new mobile suit trucks and business ventures, Soto & Co.’s growth underscores the company’s commitment to fostering community and celebrating diversity. Soto & Co. isn’t just a business; it’s a testament to Austin’s evolving tapestry.
The company stands as a beacon of custom excellence in a world of fast fashion and mass production. Here, style isn’t just about clothes; it’s about crafting narratives and embracing heritage, one stitch at a time.

Soto & Co. has built an impressive network specializing in customizable suits for college and professional athletes. A sports agent started referring UT Austin football and basketball players to Soto & Co. after they opened their doors, and Rick’s stellar reputation preceded him. This connection ushered in a new wave of clients from the sports industry, and his suits have been featured across ESPN and Sports Illustrated, where customized team logos can be found along the inner jacket lining.

While designing a dream home with her late husband, Lorenza Avila discovered her passion for creating functional, elevated spaces that foster connection and introspection. Her timeless aesthetic defines elegant interiors that remain adaptable to life’s cycles of change.
Born in Mexico, raised on the east coast, and having lived all over the world, Lorenza Avila is no stranger to change.
After leaving the corporate world behind and building a successful online business, her husband was tragically

Upon approach, a black steel gate yields to a long drive flanked by Japanese blueberry trees, and at last, the primary home announces itself. Two dramatically pitched, white farmhouse volumes bookend a double height, glass foyer, capped by a crisp roofline and affording

Checking In
at Río Perdido
Arriving at Río Perdido Thermal River Hotel feels a bit like arriving on the scene of Jurassic Park. The soaring wooden vaulted ceiling and exposed trusses of the open-air main lodge and dining room instantly take you back to a place in childhood where the dramatic theme song plays as the cast enters an untapped world ready to explore.
This eco-lodge is the only building on property that peeks beyond the rough foliage of the 600+ acre reserve. Standalone suites are hidden within the forest, connected by well-lit paths—each with their own private getaway with floor to ceiling jungle views, some with outdoor showers.
“This was no accident,” says Gabriel Saragovia, founder of Río Perdido. Coming from a lineage of architects and designers, Gabriel had each of the 30+ bungalows and the main lodge designed to fit within the existing forest’s ecosystem without disturbing their indigenous environments. It’s obvious upon walking the grounds that “life finds a way,” and this eco-conscious team has respected the way of life.
Flowing in perfect harmony with the sounds of growler monkeys and chirping songbirds, two rivers collide below the lodge perched on a cliff. Hidden within foliage, the masculine energy of Río Blanco and the feminine energy of the peaceful thermal waters with eight hot springs flow to eventually intertwine in rhythm. The result is crystal clear waters along a rocky riverbed where the soothing thermal pools vary from uber hot

to warm, absolutely perfect for a long secluded mineral-rich bath. While just upstream from the soft spring waters, you can swim in the cooler Río Blanco. This thermo-river gorge draws energy from deep magma flows of the majestic Miravalles Volcano. In fact, making a day trip to Miravalles Volcano, Llanos del Cortés Waterfalls, Volcano Tenorio’s Río Celeste, or rafting the Tenorio River is highly suggested.
Yet, there really is no reason to leave Río Perdido if you don’t want to. The local and friendly team has thoughtfully curated every detail of the stay from an elevated dining experience to craft cocktails at the mineral-rich (warm, hot, and cold) pools that connect to the pool bar and hug the lodge. You can indulge in relaxing activities from cliff-side yoga to bird watching hikes to calming spa treatments. For the outdoor enthusiasts, they offer a mountain biking circuit and arguably the best zip lining experience and white-water tubing adventure in Costa Rica.
Referred to as the Canyoning Adventure, the team of canyoning experts guide thrillists through a series of zip lines that scale the gorge of the Río Blanco canyon. Blue waters rush
below as we glide through the air on a series of cables that begin (and end) at the lodge without somehow seeing any other guests on our voyage. Our group of three has three guides and one photographer to ensure our safety the entire time and to also document our thrilling adventure of swinging through the stunning canyon like Tarzan over suspension bridges, an actual “Tarzan swing,” scaling rock formations, and soaring above tree canopies.
If you visit during rainy season, the rushing waters of Río Blanco canyon offer another thrilling adventure: white water tubing. Guides again help you safely transverse the river on inner tubes through several intense rapids, revealing the canyon’s magic once more. Other parts on the river allow you to leisurely float along narrowing canyon walls where echos of mammals become louder and daylight becomes scarce.
Though just an hour drive from the Liberia airport, the secluded luxury of Río Perdido offers a simple practice in Costa Rica’s legendary motto: “Pura Vida.”

East Austin Mainstay Takes its Stand in Bastrop
WORDS BEN HAGUEWOOD
PHOTOS ASHLEY HAGUEWOOD
Have you ever thought that “ Some day I’m going to get together with my friends, and we’re going to start the business of our dreams?” Well, Chef Sonya Cote did and is now living the dream in the form of Store House Market and Eatery. Of course, it helps to have several decades of experience in the restaurant business, and being married to an organic farmer doesn’t hurt either.
Long-time East Austin residents may know the Sonya from Eden East, Hillside Farmacy, and other ventures that have incorporated great ingredients and great people. This venture is similar, just a little further east in Bastrop. Sonya and her husband David operated Eden East as an urban farm and farm-totable restaurant for years, leasing three acres of undeveloped land on Springdale Road to grow the fresh produce for the restaurant. Then came the developers. When the property sold out from under them, Sonya and David decided to make a permanent stand, and this time with an ownership stake in the operation. With a newly renovated storefront located in the oldest building in Bastrop, the property, built in 1836,
underwent a transformation that retained the historic character of the original dance hall but with tasteful updates for indoor and outdoor dining. With both the menu and the building’s interior area refreshingly analog, from the housemade sauces, pastas, and dressings to the community record player, it is a welcome respite from the constant churn of the big city.
With farm-to-table becoming a trendy de-
scription with a wide definition, the relocated Eden East farm that supplies Store House is unquestionably local.
“The farm is right down the road on Main Street,” Sonya notes. She and David have cultivated the land and relationships with local suppliers, like Bastrop Cattle Company and others, to sustain the menu, and the staff include many long-time relationships that give the dining experience an authentic family feel.
“I’ve known Chef Herb,”
44 EASTside | June/July2024 find more at eastsideatx.com eastside | taste
Sonya recalls, “I don’t know, basically forever. And the kitchen staff are mostly locals and even my friend’s daughter.”
The menu seamlessly showcases the quality of the ingredients with each dish, achieving a near perfect balance of freshness and comfort, and the addition of a brunch menu allows the ingredients to shine. The Farm’BQ Benny, for example, is Store House’s ode to Eggs Benedict that could only come from an integrated farm-totable operation. The lightly smoked vegetables serve as the base
of the dish and offer a crunchy counterbalance to the unctuous soft-poached eggs, chili flakes, feta, and hollandaise. Similarly, familiar dishes like Gulf Shrimp & Grits, Southern Quail, and Steak Ranchero & Eggs are reminiscent of classic brunch options, only better. They are elevated to perfection by the fresh ingredients and Chef Herb’s innovative take on the dish, owing to in-house sauces, jams, and seasonal ingredients. The creativity and freshness extends to the cocktail program as well, incorporating in-season herbs
and house-made tinctures and syrups to create a drink menu that similarly balances the rustic and the elegance in each seasonal concoction.
As Austin continues to accelerate in every way, Store House Market and Eatery is a delightful breather, connected and integrated to the seasons and the yields of harvest— a dining experience that is as local as it gets.

Palatable Paleta
A Refreshing Summer Sip
WORDS TANYA WHITE | PHOTOS BAPTISTE DESPOIS
Family recipes shine at Los Mangos, taking the Mexican popsicle to new levels with fresh fruit and unique flavor combinations. Eastsiders can quench their thirst while bringing the temperature down with mouth-watering, chilling refreshers.
This family-run business has been serving delicious frozen treats on Riverside Drive since 2018, scooping freshly-made ice cream out of a nondescript shopping center. While lines are typically short, the stream of customers is steady with regulars who know exactly what they want. One of the most popular requests is their Mangonada, a frozen non-alcoholic drink that mixes chunks of fresh, ripe mango fruit with mango ice cream. Patrons can get creative by trying the lime ice cream with
coconut sprinkles on top. The helpful staff stands ready to make it any way you want it.
Family recipes drive the menu as owner Jesus Luviano likes to stay behind the scenes, concocting new combinations to delight all the repeat customers. “Paletas (popsicles) are common in Mexico, but everyone does it their own way,” explains Elizabeth Luviano, Jesus’s sister, “and we only use fresh ingredients and make everything right there on-site.” Paleta means “little stick,” but there’s nothing little about these flavor combinations. The only thing little are the small batches of frozen treats made with fresh ingredients, no dyes, no preservatives, or additives.
There is a unique texture change when slurping a paleta, as chunks of fruit, sometimes even vegetables, are frozen inside. This cool invention is credited to a family living in a small town in Mexico during the 1940s who followed their passion for creating unique cooling treats. Recipes include both water and milk-based options; at any time, there are over a dozen selections available in the freezer.
The fruit and flavor possibilities are endless at Los Mangos. Nance fruit, common in Central and South America, looks like a yellow cherry and carries a strong odor one might almost call cheesy. The guayaba fruit, known as guava in the U.S., is a brilliant yellow and red combination; it will taste sweet and have a meaty texture. For something even sweeter, try the Gansito ice cream, which is vanilla ice cream stuffed with cream-filled sponge cake pieces, known as the Mexican Twinkie. For salty and sweet fanatics, their watermelon paleta with chile is one of the most popular items in the heat of summer.
A chat with one of the regulars in line will yield plenty of insider tips. It’s obvious that everyone frequenting here has a favorite, and they’re proud to share it.

NATIVE KNOWLEDGE: The flavor list for paletas is long at Los Mangos, but it’s not the only item on the menu. In addition to the bank of popsicles and ice cream, cold treats include agua frescas, smoothies, raspas (frozen juice), and sundaes of all sizes.
