Embracing Adventure

At the heart of our existence as humans resides an innate desire to embark on an adventure and discover the unknown. For centuries, it was how we survived. Less of a survival skill these days but none the less imperative for the soul, the thrill of venturing beyond the familiar, scaling a summit, or traversing a river captures the imagination and fuels our sense of wonder.

As you and your loved ones prepare for summer travels, we embarked on our own thrilling expedition. This is not just another travel publication aiming to entice readers with generic recommendations or the clichéd "top 10" destinations crafted by a PR agency. No, we have invested our time and resources to personally explore and experience the marvels of these extraordinary crevices in the universe so that we can provide readers with honest and unparalleled insights.

This year, we set our sights on the western regions of the Lone Star State, delving into the captivating parks that eventually led us to the majestic landscapes of Big Bend National Park. The journey was an adventure itself, with long drives encompassing a dramatic transition from crystal clear rivers and hill country vistas to the vast expanse of dusty plains stretching as far as the eye can see. Finally, we beheld the awe-inspiring cliffs and vibrant hues of Big Bend, a testament to the magnificent allure of our great state of Texas. It is a trip that every Texan should undertake to truly comprehend the magnificence of this diverse landscape.

Furthermore, in this edition, we take you on a culinary expedition across the globe from the comfort of home (aka East Austin). We venture to Florida for a sophisticated retreat, and for those seeking closer escapades, we present a classy getaway just east of Austin in Round Top, Texas. Additionally, our team has meticulously curated a selection of the six best state parks across the nation, drawing from our own personal experiences.

Summer is upon us, and with this issue, we aim to bring you joy and excitement with a splash of thrill sprinkled in. We strive to present authentic, real-life accounts of the stories we produce, ensuring that we remain a trusted source for information spanning from East Austin to the farthest reaches of the country.

The Gift of Friendship

A Nonprofit Emphasizing the Power of Relationship

For over 30 years, the national organization, Friends of the Children, has served young people dealing with tremendous obstacles. The program’s Austin chapter began partnering with local kids five years ago to positively impact their lives, with hopes to bring about a successful future for their circle of influence.

Friends of the Children Austin is committed to breaking the cycle of generational poverty, beginning on a personal level. The nonprofit offers support to youth in particularly difficult circumstances by providing each with a trained professional mentor or “friend” who commits to regularly meeting with them from kindergarten through their high school graduation. Each friend reflects the community they serve, making them strong and relatable role models for the mentees.

What makes their approach to mentorship unique is the emphasis on creating relationships that are one-on-one and long-term. Early intervention is critical to making an impact, and this model is

tailored to the needs of the individual child. Each young person is gifted the priceless experience of a lasting, complex bond.

Thus far, the outcomes have been incredibly promising. Collected data shows a significant amount of youth in the program growing up and pursuing post-secondary education, entering the workforce, avoiding the juvenile justice system, and delaying parenting until after adolescence.

“The most rewarding part of being a mentor is the long-term commitment that we make to the youth we serve and to their families,” shares Program Manager and Professional Mentor Freddy Vigil-Zavaleta. “The model of mentoring each youth from

kindergarten through 12th grade, no matter what, not only gives the opportunity to observe monumental changes but also the small victories that, if one weren't involved with them every week, would be missed.” Freddy adds that it is an ongoing relationship where they can learn from one another. He smiles, “As time goes by, my boys and I have created a space where we both feel comfortable growing and adapting to the barriers that we experience through our time together.”

Invoking Serene Moments on Canvas

They say sense and memory are inextricably connected. Artist Kandice Pierce taps into those sensorial memories to invoke her favorite places: from the peachy pink sunrises of West Texas framing far-off cobalt hills to bands of billowy gray and deep slate pulled across the horizon of a cloudy coastal scene.

“Ipaint to travel, and I travel to paint,” says Kandice with a smile. “They're very much married for me because it's my way of capturing things that I really want to remember.” Her works are almost always connected to a story, and she hopes they’ll resonate with other’s memories of a place.

Kandice only recently turned to art fulltime, after a long Covid furlough brought her back to painting. “I really wanted to try to produce things that made me happy, because when I'm creating art, it brings me peace. I hope people share in that.”

While Kandice retains attention to detail, she admits she’s learning to let go of perfectionism. She believes that playtime is an important part of life and affirms, “I don’t feel like we play enough as adults.”

Still, Kandice has her work cut out for her. Recently preparing for a marathon of shows, she's presenting a collection inspired by her West Texas travels. She spent time in Marfa, teaching painting classes and capturing the magical desert landscapes. While there, Kandice also did a residency at the Willow House in

CALLING ART STARTERS

Building a one-woman art business doesn’t happen without highly qualified help. Kandice praises her “amazing intern” who has been with her since the fall, and she is currently on the lookout for summer interns. Kandice loves being a mentor and hopes to share as much as she can about both her painting process and the business aspects of working in the art world.

WHAT'S IN A NAME?

Kandice calls her art business “Pierce and Paint” after the auto body shop her dad has owned for his entire career: Pierce Paint and Body. The horseshoe in her logo is a callback to her memories of the endless games her family played by the lake growing up.

The process of turning a moment into a painting is multi-faceted. Kandice takes pictures to explore the scene from different vantage points. Often, she’ll do a quick on-site sketch, complete with color swatches that can catch bits of sand or dust from the site. These sketches are like visual journal entries. She elaborates, “They’re just really meant for me to have, play, and connect with the space.”

Back in her studio, Kandice throws on music (lately, it’s Miranda Lambert’s “Marfa Tapes”) and works her subject, starting with big strokes and ending with the tiny, brush details. The result is serene, evocative scenes that give the viewer a sense of having stood on that very hill or sat on that very patch of flatland, simply soaking in the experience for themselves.

Turning her passion into a business has been a delicate balance for Kandice as she works the show circuit while exploring ways to diversify revenue. “I hope I can do it all and not lose that I’m painting because it’s fun,” she says. “I’m learning that building things slowly and structurally sound over time is okay, and I'm learning to be okay with failing.”

While the freedom of van life may not be a lifestyle

that everyone can maintain on a permanent basis, it is a perfect way to approach a vacation. “The idea is that you've got

everything that you need in this little 70-square-foot space, and you have the freedom to go anywhere and see anything,” says Kevin Jornlin, co-owner of Vanish. Bringing the fun along for the entirety of the trip “is a super addicting feeling.”

westernmost reaches of the Lone Star State, the van gives a whole new meaning to camping. Pull up anywhere, and just like that, there is a simple cabin set up. The time that is saved on logistics can instead be spent wandering, taking in the sights, or simply sitting

Nothing is deeper in the heart of Texas than the extensive vistas and uninhabited basin of the state's western edge. From the burnt sienna of the Chisos Mountains to the goldenrod grasses dotting the dusty violet of the high desert, the watercolors of West Texas beckon adventurers looking for sights not often seen. Skip the conventional destinations this summer, and make the journey to one of the farthest-flung regions in the Lone Star State. Interstate 10 invites travelers to marvel at the surreal beauty that unfurls on an impossible scale in the landscapes of West Texas.

Monahans Sandhills State Park

The Sands of Time

The Sahara Desert does not hold a monopoly on picturesque sand dunes. Only two hours away from Marfa (and 6 hours from Austin), this state park preserves nature’s tranquility among its miles of snow-white dunes that roll as far as the eye can see. Monahans may be the only state park where kicking off shoes is encouraged – literally. Walking on the shifting sands that morph to create a natural tableau of soft monochrome colors and allowing the imagination

to wander is a playful treat.

If something a touch more sporty is in order, be sure to borrow a sand disk to glide down the dunes as if they were the bunny slopes at a ski resort. The advantage over skiing here is the weather; even if the days live up to the reputation of the dry, desert heat, as soon as the sun sinks into a pool of crimson, rose, and indigo, the air becomes crisp, and the sky turns into a canvas filled with endless stars. BALMORHEA STATE PARK

Just 30 minutes north of the Davis Mountains lies Balmorhea State Park, an oasis in the heart of the desert. Balmorhea boasts the world’s largest spring-fed pool. The crystal-clear waters here span 1.3 acres, holding 3.5 million gallons. At least 15 million gallons of water from San Solomon Springs flow through the pool each day. As if this gigantic spring-fed marvel wasn’t enough to view on its own, swimmers can take respite in the high Texas sun. Water temperatures fluctuate between 72 and 76 degrees year-round, making it ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving in any season. Balmorhea's waters are home to Mexican tetra fish and the Texas spiny softshell turtle, in addition to the endangered Pecos gambusia and the Comanche Spring pupfish, which can be found nowhere else in the world. The park is an important habitat for numerous plant and animal species, including desert mule deer, javelinas, and a variety of bird species. The park's unique blend of desert and aquatic environments attracts visitors from all over the world which means reservations are highly recommended in the summer months. 9207 TX-17, Toyahvale, TX

Davis Mountains State Park

The Beginning of the American Southwest

Davis Mountains State Park is one of the oldest Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) projects in Texas, which means the park dates back to the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Since its inception, the park has provided winding trails for hikers to meander into valleys and crest mountain ridges. One of the signature routes in the park is the Skyline Drive Trail which provides 4.5 miles for hikers and mountain bikers to enjoy uninterrupted panoramic views. Another well-trodden and history-filled path, the 1.75-mile Civilian Conservation Corps Trail, guides hikers to the fascinating Fort Davis National Historic Site.

While there, be sure to stop at the Indian Lodge. Currently under renovation, the mesa-style building situated in a desert basin is a 39-room, full-service hotel that includes stucco fireplaces in the suites and original furnishings from the 1930s. Even if the rooms are unavailable for a night’s stay, there are plenty of campgrounds available to enjoy this unspoiled nature.

For those who prefer longer loops powered by motor vehicles, Scenic Loop Drive is a 75-mile roadway that takes travelers across acres of arid terrain punctuated by the electric blooms of succulents, the chartreuse foliage of the occasional tree, and the iridescent feathers of one of the many birds fluttering in the West Texas breeze. McDonald Observatory

The Stars at Night are Big and Bright…

The infinite universe of the Milky Way has never been so close as it is to the McDonald Observatory. Home to four of the world’s largest telescopes, including the Hobby-Eberly Telescope, this West Texas observation center opened in 1939 and has since expanded to house scientists from a range of global universities who track the night skies.

Amateur stargazers are also welcome here at one of the evening Star Parties where guides orient attendees to the constellation map of sky before changing perspectives by opening the heavens through a telescope. Keep eyes peeled for shooting stars. Out west, they frequently illuminate the darkness.

For those who don’t have time to camp out under the stars, come early and watch the sunset as astronomers calibrate the hexagonal mirrors that reflect the universe back to Earth. Shortly after the last rays of light disappear, the observatory roof slides back to reveal a quilt of darkness tufted with shimmering beads.

Upon closer inspection, these twinkling lights transform into balls of fire whose intensity is measured using color. What appears white to the naked eye is really gradients of blues, reds, and purples that tell stories of a star’s age, distance, and position relative to Earth. Marfa

A Secluded Oasis for Artistic Meditation

While the legend of the Marfa lights remains to be proven (or disproven), an extraterrestrial encounter that can certainly be found in this West Texas town is the geography. For as far as the eye can see, the desert flows, only interrupted by spotted tufts of scrubby flora and the occasional antelope or ibex.

Under the white light of the desert sun, the bleached walls of the town shelter dozens of galleries dedicated to the arts. From painting and sculpture to multi-media installations and conceptual pieces, the tranquility of this small town is the perfect canvas for imagining an alternative way of life.

When the sun descends behind the far-flung

horizon, town lights in the evening are a welcome beacon, and all paths on the small urban grid lead to Highland Street where visitors can stop in at Hotel Paisano for a good time. The revelry begins after sundown when the entrance courtyard is transformed into a patio laden with company, fresh beverages, and Texas-sized portions of southern comfort food such as the Pistachio Fried Steak and Lemon Penne Pasta.

The historic property first opened in 1930 and was the filming location for the 1956 film Giant starring James Dean, Elizabeth Taylor, and Rock Hudson. Although the establishment was extensively renovated in the early aughts, Old Hollywood glam still seeps through. Well-worn terracotta tiles pair elegantly with the indoor-outdoor living that plays out in the hotel’s cypress-scented air.

For a more contemporary touch, head to the Hotel Saint George where industrial whitewashed walls serve as conscientiously curated gallery walls displaying local paintings, sculptures, photography, and multi-media crafts. Though the hotel has

been renovated to include all the modern luxuries any guest would need, Hotel Saint George has been a part of Marfa’s story since 1886. Likewise, this new incarnation has become the communal epicenter of Marfa and a comfortable landing spot for Texas old-timers and contemporary art pilgrims visiting the art mecca.

A meal at Saint George’s LaVenture treats patrons to fresh local fare with southwestern influences that tickle the tastebuds, such as their homemade bacon jam which comes on their fresh-baked sourdough toast at breakfast or on their HSG Burger at suppertime. Guests can also enjoy a light menu and carefully crafted cocktails poolside with cool desert vibes under the bright Texas sun.

Big Bend National Park

Unparalleled & Unconventional Natural Beauty

in the bitter edge of Texas country are some of the most breathtaking landscapes and clearest skies around. These vast vistas are only broken by tonal gradients of color cast by the Chisos Mountains that partially outline the border between the United States and Mexico.

Big Bend National Park spans miles of mountains and 800,000 acres of desert terrain making this Texas-sized land conservation the 15th-largest national park. While a solitary road cuts through the park and guides visitors to some of the most colorful desert landscapes in the American Southwest, hopping off the beaten path is recommended.

As soon as a trail leaves the paved road, it is clear to city dwellers how heavy silence can weigh. But listen for a moment. Nature swells in the sound of wind winding through canyons as echoes of laughter reverberate from miles downstream. Birds of prey sail overhead, watchful over the shimmering landscape before coming to roost in cliffside alcoves.

The desert heat shimmers along trails of crushed limestone in diametric contrast to what the landscape once was. Roughly 500 million years ago, Big Bend’s peaks and valleys were hidden by the ocean floor. The only evidence of this is the thousands of bivalves preserved within the layers of limestone that line every turn.

Ascend the peaks that define the park’s topography, and take a break at the various overlooks that dot the park. Look out as far as the eye can see, which in the unpolluted air, is over 16 miles. Spot Emory Peak or Elephant Tusk in the distance, and remember where they are to keep oriented during the long hikes along the South Rim Trail.

Alternatively, break the staggering scale and temperatures of this park by jumping into the Rio Grande. Hiking through Santa Elena Canyon means fording the waterway to reach the opposite bank before trekking up the cliff face past otherworldly cacti and flowering succulents. In only a half-mile, the landscape transports hikers into a shaded oasis defined by the hushed ripple of the river and the occasional splash of swimmers. While the trail eventually ends, ambitious individuals can continue the journey by wading downriver alongside kayakers streaming by, sheltered from the desert sun by the canyon’s ridge, which rises 1,500 feet.

If an easy hike is what is needed, try Window View Trail. Walk the paved path leading to a natural cut in the mountain range that creates a “window” through which the sun sets in a spectacular end to a day parade of pastels. nps.gov/bibe,

TEXAS PARKS WITH COOL CABINS

• Buescher State Park is one hour east of Austin and offers families a chance to stay in a real log cabin.

Pedernales Falls State Park

The entrance to Pedernales Falls State Park frames a quintessential view of the Texas Hill Country. Eight square miles of rolling limestone hills topped with oak and juniper woodlands scent the summer air and attunes the senses to a slower, natural state of being.

While there is much to be explored on the park’s trails, including Trammell's Crossing, Twin Falls, and Headquarters Overlook, the site that draws visitors in is Pedernales Falls themselves. back over 300 million years.

For safety reasons, the park service does not allow swimming in the falls, but there is plenty to discover along the banks that are defined by a variety of geological formations which display Texas history on an ancient scale.

About an hour or so east of Austin, after careening through miles of serene countryside, a parade of monumental barn buildings with big “antiques” banners begins to crop up. The highway then gives way to a charming town square with a smattering of restaurants and shops housed in well-kept historic buildings. Not a five-minute walk away, back on the country road, The Frenchie Boutique Hotel is nestled in a picturesque country scene.

The Frenchie is located in Round Top, Texas, reflecting the eccentricity of this antiquing outpost while bringing a fresh air of modernity. It’s owned by Katy Bader, who came to Round Top to showcase her European antiques, before deciding to open her own lodgings in 2017. She found a pastoral plot of land with a perfect 19th-century farmhouse that had been moved onto the property, which also houses a vintage cottage and a small studio.

Katy recruited her longtime friend, designer Kristen Light, to help her transform the spaces. “Elegant and eclectic” were the main design goals, according to General Manager Aimee Kraemer who recalls,

adding that they "wanted to make it something that people would be inspired by and that they would come back to see.”

In the main house, a communal kitchen features modern appliances, a rustic farmhouse table, mosaic floor tiling, and a blue chevron backsplash. The sitting room decor is a daring mélange of plush seafoam armchairs, a peach-painted wall, leafy tropical wallpaper, and a bull bust looming over a cotton candy pink fridge stocked with curated wine and beverages.

But the Frenchie is much more than captivating appearances. Aimee emphasizes that hospitality is their focus. “We really try to help

our guests personalize their stays. We have a driver who will do wine tours. We have a massage therapist who will do massages right here on site. We have a lot of amenities that help people make really great memories while they’re out here.” Not least being the made-to-order dining options offered by private onsite chef, Brenna McBroom.

Round Top itself is a draw for guests, especially during the triannual antique shows, attracting visitors from abroad. “We love that we get to meet people from all over the world who are hanging out in our tiny little town of 90 people,” says Aimee. “It’s a really fun place to visit, any time.”

MAKING THE ROUNDS

Though Round Top may be small, it’s anything but sleepy. Known for its antiquing, Round Top also boasts a number of wineries, breweries, and excellent restaurants, as well as a local dance hall and Round Top Festival Institute, an international center for performing arts.

A Week In Florida’s Gulf Coast

The Jewel of the Emerald Coastline

Florida’s panhandle is a charming backdrop for a laid-back, coastal getaway. Twenty-six miles of white sandy beaches sparkle in the brilliant sunlight, begging visitors to sink their toes into the shore and melt into the easy rhythm of beach life.

Day One

From February to September, beach bums can fly directly from Austin to Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport via American Airlines. The sleepy area is perfect for a relaxed, unpretentious getaway. In Santa Rosa Beach, check into The Lodge 30A, a boutique hotel in the heart of the Seagrove Beach Community. Take a dip in the pool or head up to one of their spacious rooms, equipped with a kitchenette, for a quick nap and snack to unwind from the day of travel.

Once refreshed, venture out for a relaxing dinner at Old Florida Fish House, just minutes down the road. This quintessentially beachy restaurant is charming in its abili-

ty to walk the line between kitschy vacation vibes and fine seafood dining. Sit outside and enjoy a specialty cocktail, live music, and a view of Eastern Lake shimmering under the setting sun. For mezcal lovers, Smoke on the Lake is a must-try. The expansive dinner menu includes offerings from the sushi bar, oyster bar, and main kitchen, which serves fresh Gulf-to-table dishes. With bellies full, head to the nearby Eastern Lake Beach for a midnight stroll along the water of this rare coastal dune lake.

Day Two

Wake with the sun, and get ready to dive into the history of Walton with a short trip north to storied DeFuniak Springs. But first, fuel

up for the day at Black Bear Bread Co., a neighborhood bakery founded in 2016 with the noble mission of building community through fresh bread and pastries. Indulge in a perfectly sticky warm cinnamon roll or a hearty bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit, and enjoy a chat with friendly locals. After carb-loading, take a 40-minute drive to the historic county seat. Burn some of those carbs and stretch your legs by walking around the edge of Lake DeFuniak, one of the two almost perfectly round circular spring-fed lakes in the world. Next, enjoy learning about the Florida Chautauqua Assembly and other local lore at Walton County Heritage Museum. Afterwards, wander through Walton-DeFuniak Public Library. The walls here are covered in interesting

artifacts, hinting that this library is the oldest continuously operating library in the state. Ask the library staff nicely, and they may be willing to allow a peek at their prized signed first edition of To Kill a Mockingbird.

For those more interested in ghoulish tales than textbook history, a late lunch at Café Nola will satisfy supernatural cravings. Located inside the haunted Hotel DeFuniak, this elegant eatery lives up to its name and delivers bold Cajun flavors courtesy of the charismatic Chef Ernie. Start with fried green tomatoes and bloody marys to whet the appetite before diving into a po’boy or a sumptuous smoked duck breast. If there’s room, fluffy beignets and a rich, deep-fried bread pudding are the cherry on top of this perfect meal. Before leaving, take a quick stroll through the hotel lobby for a chance to spot some paranormal activity, then head back to home base for some R&R or spend some time at one of the 50 beach access points that line Walton County’s shore.

Day Three

Get ready to move and groove with the help of YOLO Boards & Bikes, just steps away from the lodge. Rent an eBike for the day, and speed down the bike trail to explore the area from an exhilarating vantage point. Cruise leisurely through town, making a point to stop at the local boutiques and family-owned businesses that make the community so special. After speeding on two wheels, it’s time for a beach break. Find the nearest tram pickup spot

and catch the convenient local transportation to Grayton Beach. Laze about in the sun, enjoying the quiet murmurings of the ocean and sounds of coastal wildlife. After working up an appetite from the sun, The Red Bar, a bustling local lunch spot filled to the brim with memorabilia and knick-knacks on every surface possible. Enjoy a sangria and a hearty seafood gumbo while people-watching at this quirky, iconic restaurant.

Next up, head to Distillery 98 to keep the party going with locally made vodka. This small producer is one of only 40 micro-distilleries in Florida and boasts some truly unique methods. They embrace the local landscape by sourcing only local corn and using oyster shells in their filtration process. Grab an espresso martini, and head up to the balcony on the second floor to sip in the salty air.

A Unique Marriage of Flavors Leaves Austinites Falling in Love.

Kareem El-Ghayesh of KG BBQ has delivered one of East Austin’s most popular new menus, offering classic Texas barbecue fused with an Egyptian twist.

It’s been seven years since Kareem decided to leave his finance career in Cairo to master the craft of Texas barbecue in Austin. “I was haunted by the idea that I’d regret it if I didn’t take the leap,” he admits, gesturing over a perfect plate of brisket, pork sausage, lamb shoulder, glazed pork ribs, and creative sides. Enamored with cooking from an early age, he refined his skills in the kitchen at home in Egypt, hosting regular ‘supper clubs’ for friends and family. Eventually, several formative trips to Austin would ignite a

passion for apprenticeship that sent him to Texas permanently, acquiring a versatile skill set at Kerlin, Valentina’s, Lamberts, Salt & Time, and Interstellar, to name a few.

Culinary curiosity unyielding, outside of work he applied his new experience to the traditional meals he would cook for others back home. Before long he was hosting supper clubs again, which led to pop-up events, and ultimately to KG BBQ, a well-equipped food truck with a thousand-gallon smoker that opened last Oc-

Quickly cementing itself as the community staple, Mour Cafe is far from the typical wine shop. Once inside this urban oasis, an expansive wall of wines borders the bodega side of a quaint cafe awaits. Consultant Felix Jimenez and his team have transitioned Mour from a corner store into an all-day experience where patrons can purchase a bottle, and either grab a couple of snacks to go or bring to their table, and happily watch the time fly by.

While there’s plenty else in the shop section to peruse, the cafe’s crown jewel is their wine selection. As patrons browse, Felix hopes that, while one might call these wines exclusive, the friendly expertise of Mour’s team will “provide an experience where people can get wine they’ve never been able to before.” Mour is able to curate an unseen shopping experience for their customers by bringing in restaurant-only wines. These bottles are exclusively sold to be poured in fine dining establishments. Yet, thanks to the dining portion of the cafe, Mour can get their hands on these bottles for their wine shop.

As the creative and innovative spirits continue to enhance Mour Cafe, their latest addition is orange wine. This style of winemaking is among the original methods, using the grape, skin, seeds, and all, for a resulting amber-colored libation. While uncommon for many years, orange wines have seen a renaissance within the natural wine movement. Felix boasts, “We launched [orange wines] as a pop-up here, and the response was amazing.”

Introducing customers to these tangerinehued white wines was a fun next step as Mour continues to expand their offerings and build trust with their patrons. The passion behind what they do has led Mour to succeed in their East Riverside neighborhood. Regulars often walk out with a new experience to gush about. Even those who might never go past the hostess stand can expect to be pampered by Felix and his team’s dedication to having the best selection. Chances are, if you come by once, you’ll keep coming back for Mour.
