As a premier scholarship opportunity at ETSU for students from the region, the Roan offers much more than an ordinary scholarship. The “Roan Experience” helps students learn, grow, and develop—as individuals and as exceptional leaders, positively impacting our region and the world.
The Roan Scholarship includes:
4 years of unique, out-of-the-classroom experiences
Full undergraduate tuition and fees
Housing and meal plan allowance
An allowance for books and supplies
10 students in each cohort
Choose any major and pursue any profession

Roan Impact Focus projects present opportunities to solve problems through collaboration, teamwork, and service.
The Outdoor Leadership Challenge is a weeklong adventure through the Appalachian Mountains for first-year students in which you’ll build lifelong bonds, create lasting memories, and learn to thrive outside your comfort zone.
Roan Scholars attend regional and national conferences and engage directly with leaders at all levels, gaining valuable experience in diverse professional settings.
Study abroad and other global experiences broaden Roan Scholars’ perspectives and build valuable leadership skills.
The program provides funding for Roan Scholars pursuing extraordinary summer opportunities that support their professional and/or personal development.
The Roan is more than a cohort—It’s a community. Roan Scholars plug into a lifelong network of alumni, local leaders, and other friends of the program—so you’ll be connected with customized learning opportunities, coaching, mentoring, and professional guidance. Wherever you go, your Roan community is there for you.

Roan Scholars are selected from a competitive field of applicants based on character, intellectual curiosity, leadership potential, and other qualities— including their capacity, desire, and drive to learn, grow, serve, and lead.
