Top tips for brides * Starting six months prior to your wedding day, have a facial once a month to ensure a radiant complexion. * Adopt a healthy eating plan and drink lots of water and herbal teas. * If you are spray tanning for your wedding, trial the product or professional service first to be certain you are going to like the end result. * Do not neglect your hands and feet. Frequent manicures and pedicures are a must. * Clean your engagement ring and any other jewellery you will be wearing. * Check your wedding gown fits perfectly prior to it leaving the store. Ensure all beading is sewn on securely, zips work and, if needs be, somewhere for you to hang your train so you are free to dance the night away. Try on your gown with the undergarments you intend to wear on your wedding day to ensure they fit perfectly under your dress.

Joy and Len Burnett were attended by Joy’s three sisters, Len’s brother and a friend, who later married one of the sisters.

Joy and Len’s 60-year union His mum was worried they were too much like brother and sister to marry, but 60 years on that thought has been proven wrong.

Joy is involved with the Red Cross and anti-cancer charities, and Len helps with the Beaufort Gardens at the Bairnsdale Hospital.

Joy Hine was 19-and-a-half when she married 23-year-old Len Burton on June 14, 1952. They were attended by Joy’s three sisters, Len’s brother, and a friend who later married one of the sisters.

While Len loves growing his vegies, Joy is a great gardener. She has recently been inducted as the only lady on the previously all-male committee for the Beaufort Gardens, a project they now enjoy doing together.

The Presbyterian Church on the corner of Pyke and Main Streets in Bairnsdale was the venue for the happy occasion. The building is still there, although more recently it has been home to less formal concerns, including a fish and chip shop for some time. Imparting some of their secrets of a good union, Joy and Len agree that working together in a family business was a great benefit to their relationship. Both Joy and Len grew up locally, Joy in Lindenow and Len in Lake Bunga. With the arrival of their six children the couple relocated to Warragul where they raised the family with a dairy farming lifestyle. They share-farmed for a couple of years before taking on their own farm for another 14 or more years. Every successful partnership has its ups and downs, but with Joy as Len’s right hand man the couple has weathered many a storm, together. 12 // East Gippsland Wedding Guide and Planner

Joy and Len Burnett have been happily married for more than 60 years, and are still going strong. They say finding a truly compatible partner is one of the keys to a successful marriage. Finding a compatible partner is very important. Joy says that there’s no point both being of the same opinion, that only leads to knocking of heads. Happily she says, “I always take the blame, and I keep coming back for more. It’s just in my nature.” When she was younger Joy was a sewing mistress. She made her own wedding grown and later made the bridal gowns for three of her five children’s weddings. Once the children had grown and left the nest the couple moved back to Bairnsdale and their roots, where they continue to live today. Over the years Joy has spoilt Len, doing everything for him as he earned a crust. However, now that he has more time, the roles are reversing. Len is spoiling Joy. He’s recently learned to do the laundry and can make a mean porridge. “I’m not a bad cook now,” he says. Both Joy and Len now enjoy a strong involvement with the local community.

A real test of a marriage’s strength is how it handles tragic circumstances. Forty-one years ago Joy and Len lost their eldest daughter. After a lifetime of ill health resulting from birthing complications she passed away at the age of 13-and-a-half. “As you can imagine it placed a huge strain on our marriage, but working together as a team we were able to pull the family through.” While the loss of their eldest child was certainly a trial, their five other children have been gems in their lives. With three sons, two daughters and eight grandchildren Joy and Len’s life is family-filled. Their 60 years of marriage was happily celebrated this year by spending a weekend with their children in South Gippsland. With an obvious love for each other Len and Joy really are testament to the value of great teamwork and compatibility on a successful marriage.

Make your day last forever Selecting the right wedding celebrant will ensure your beautiful ceremony will last forever. A momentous occasion stays in the forefront of hearts and memories, so whoever you select as your civil celebrant needs to be perfect for you.

must to ensure you have the ceremony performed to its highest level of potential. Over the past five years, Sherryl has had the opportunity of marrying 70 couples. “It’s a real honour to marry a couple and have them chose you to be a part of their special day,” Sherryl said.

Local civil marriage celebrant Sherryl Veenker said it’s important for couples to have their celebrant at the forefront of their wedding plans.

A highlight of Sherryl’s career as a celebrant was marrying her son and daughter-in-law in Melbourne.

“Couples really need to be able to connect and feel comfortable with the celebrant they select, therefore they need to put plans in place early to ensure they are married by the celebrant they want,” Sherryl said.

Sherryl said couples are often upset they cannot include more people in their wedding party, however suggested a way to include more family members or friends in the ceremony is to have them do a reading, sing a song or sign the wedding certificate.

mum, and it’s been a total surprise and a lovely inclusion to the ceremony when they’ve been called up to do so,” Sherryl said. “Being a celebrant is fun and interesting and it’s wonderful meeting so many people and helping them to celebrate the love and joy they share.” Sherryl said every wedding is special and unique. “As a civil celebrant I’m flexible with the couple’s wishes. I’ve been a part of weddings in gardens, along the river, at the beach and forests,” she said. Sherryl said a lot of Melbourne people are now coming to East Gippsland to be married. “People area starting to realise the true beauty of East Gippsland and are utilising many of the area’s assets,” she said.

Feel and look like a princess The best way to get the wedding dress of your dreams is to play dress-ups, says Cherie of Drapery Bridal in Macleod Street, Bairnsdale. Most brides have never worn a wedding dress before, and while you may have some idea of what you would like in your gown, it is essential that you take the time to try on a number dresses before deciding on the final gown. Don’t worry about the colour of the dresses you try on at this point. Also ignore the material and embellishments. In trying different dresses you’ll develop a taste of what you want in your own gown, the feel of the different materials, the colours that suit your tone best, and the types of trimmings you’d like. Each bride’s body is different, and trying on multiple gowns will give the best indication of what shape and style of dress suits you. Always bring one or two friends along to your ‘dress-up’ day. While boutique attendants are skilled at assisting in choosing the most flattering style for a bride-to-be, a friend can help with the personality of the dress and help make sure that the dress truly does suit the wearer. While wedding dresses can be any colour, they are usually white or ivory, with ivory being the most popular by far. White can be difficult to wear in such vast amounts, whereas ivory is softer and allows guests to see the bride wearing the dress, rather than seeing the dress first and the bride second. When deciding on whether to have a zip or lace-up bodice, Cherie advises that to fit a bodice with a zip properly, it should be done after wearing the dress for 10 to 15 minutes. Like a pair of jeans, the material of the dress will warm and stretch in that time, and premature adjustments can lead to an ill-fitting bodice. A lace-up bodice is much more forgiving and can be tightened or loosened as needed. 16// East Gippsland Wedding Guide and Planner

When choosing bridesmaid dresses, a bride usually has a strong feel for the colour she would like the dresses to be. If the bridesmaids have different body shapes Cherie suggests that the dresses be styled to suit the individual, but be sure that they are all by the same designer and the same colour. Don’t be afraid to have a long train if that is what you want. A train can look impressive heading down the aisle, and can be designed to fold into a bustle for more freedom at the reception. When choosing bridesmaid dresses, a bride usually has a strong feel for the colour she would like the dresses to be. If the bridesmaids have different body shapes Cherie suggests that the dresses be styled to suit the individual, but be sure that they are all by the same designer and the same colour. Bridesmaid dresses should also be ordered at the same time to ensure that the material and colour are consistent across all of the dresses. On-line purchasing of gowns is an option, and money can be saved on the initial purchase, however there are issues that should be considered, and you should be prepared for the unknown. On-line purchases cannot be tried on beforehand, so the cost of alterations will need to be taken into account, as well as the cost of cleaning and pressing. Alteration costs may be higher as an inferior fabric may have been used, and dresses may not be able to be cleaned, as any colours may not have been sealed.

Measurements are better to be taken by the maker of the dress as the lineal measurements sent to an on-line supplier may not take into consideration the shape of the bride, such as a narrow back and large bust. Wedding gowns can be purchased offthe-rack and adjusted, but should you decide to have one made you will need to be aware of the time it takes to create a wedding dress. Realistically a dress can take around six months to create, so eight months should be allowed to allow for any alterations. Even with the most accurate of initial measurements it is wise to order your dress a size or two larger. Adjustments are much simpler if the dress is to be made smaller, rather than trying to make a dress bigger, perhaps even needing to add more material. As with all aspects of the wedding it is important to work within your budget when deciding on a dress. At Drapery Bridal Bairnsdale there is a wedding gown for every budget and every taste, and Cherie is more than happy to take the time to ensure you do get the gown of your dreams.

Flowers and your big day Michelle Lancaster has over 20 years of experience as a florist and, having taken over Van Berkel Flowers six years ago, has already catered for well over 200 weddings. Michelle said that weddings are a great opportunity to show creative flair while still meeting the needs of the customer. “It’s great to be able to play a role in someone’s big day and flowers are so important because they’re like the final touch that pulls everything together,” she said. Michelle encourages brides to make an appointment with florists to ensure you will have their undivided attention.

The team at Van Berkel Flowers - Benita Gladstone, Michelle Lancaster, Maddi Young and Belinda Norman - can help make your big day even more special. The staff at Van Berkel Flowers are fully qualified with many years of experience and continue to receive training to keep their skills up to date.

“It’s also great if brides can provide a sample of material or photos of bouquets and styles they like,” she said.

“This is not just a job for us,” she said.

Weddings are a particularly rewarding event for the team at Van Berkel Flowers because they can involve more artistry and creativity; there is always a selection of the latest bridal bouquet magazines on hand to browse through.

It’s always best to choose blooms that are in season as imported products are not always that good in quality.

“We love flowers and gardens. Flowers can make you happy, cheer you up when you’re sad; they’re alive.”

“It’s very rewarding to see the bride all dressed up with her flowers,” Michelle said.

Personal and passionate photography Alice Campbell has a passion for photography as well as the personal and technical skills to make every photography session a fun and memorable one. Receiving her first film SLR camera at 16 years of age, Alice has since developed a keen eye and thorough understanding of what works and what doesn’t in order to capture that perfect moment. Managing a film laboratory in Melbourne for a number of years she has extensive knowledge of colour, contrast and lighting, all important aspects of getting a great shot. She has travelled to Melbourne and up the New South Wales coast photographing weddings, but with two young boys and a shift-working police officer husband she likes to keep her projects closer to home in East Gippsland. When she first started as a professional photographer she was thrilled with the idea of taking photos every day. Now, while photography is still her passion, she enjoys the interaction she has with happy couples as she joins them on their journey to the altar. That journey begins with a viewing of Alice’s portfolio including a start-tofinish of a single wedding for a good indication of what can be expected on the big day. It’s at this initial meeting that a couple will know if her photography style is a good fit for them. Choosing a wedding photographer is a very personal thing so developing a good support with your chosen photographer and embracing their creative style is very important. Married for seven years, Alice understands that your wedding day has the potential to be one of the most stressful days you will ever encounter, so she strives to make the photo sessions as comfortable and fun as can be. It is much easier to get great results from relaxed subjects. For this reason she takes the time to gain the couple’s trust, understand family dynamics and get a 20 // East Gippsland Wedding Guide and Planner

She is a huge fan of natural light and utilises it as much as possible, enabling her to capture the natural radiant beauty of the day. To maintain the look of professional shots they need to be professionally printed. Alice is a stickler for quality with all of her prints being produced at a laboratory in Melbourne, one she trusts to provide top quality prints each and every time. The laboratory specialises in fine-art metallic prints, a popular option for wedding photos, resulting in colours that truly pop. It’s also important to be in the right place

at the right time. The first photographic point of call on the day of the wedding is usually a visit to the groom and his attendants to get shots of them getting ready for the ceremony. On two occasions Alice has arrived to do these shots to find that the men were golfing or at a bar. While pre-wedding activities are a great way to calm the nerves, letting the time get away can lead to stresses later in the day. Everything else aside, Alice says that your wedding day should be fun. If you’re unable to stick to the itinerary, don’t let it stress you and put a dent in your special day. Let it flow, as it will, and really enjoy the memorable moments.

Get glowing pre-wedding skin Ella Baché Bairnsdale can ensure your skin is glowing on your wedding day by taking a little time to prepare in advance. Bairnsdale Ella Baché owner Jodie Ashworth said brides can plan their treatments in the lead up to the wedding to ensure they are ready for the big day. “Once we know someone is getting married, it gives us time to plan for all treatments and trial different options for spray tan and makeup,” Jodie said. “We ensure we consult with the bride to ensure they are happy and comfortable and that the big day is as stress free as possible.” Consultants at Ella Bache recommend that brides have a skin diagnosis at least three to six months prior to their wedding. “Once we carefully diagnosis your skin we can then prescribe a specific recipe of products and facials that are just right for you,” she said. “The results will ensure your skin is naturally radiant, glowing and healthy for your special day.” Enjoy a body treatment to exfoliate, refine and soften the skin to ensure your skin is also healthy and glowing on the day. “We recommend a trial spray tan to ensure you are happy with your tan on your wedding day,” she said. “Our tans are moisture rich, are green tea based to ensure you don’t turn orange and pH balanced to deliver a natural looking tan. A pre-tan polish is also available prior to your spraytan.” Jodie said the best time to have your spray tan done is a day or two before the wedding day. Traditions and superstitions Wedding traditions are found across almost every aspect of any wedding from the engagement, to the wedding, to the honeymoon. The traditions that are associated with a wedding are often sourced from ancient superstitions, with many traditions still part of the average wedding ceremony despite the loss of superstition in many cultures. So what are some of the most common ones still being practiced today?

RINGS The ring is wore on the fourth finger or index finger for several reasons including that Christian priests would count the first three fingers (including the thumb ) as the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit with the fourth finger for the partner. It is bad luck for the engagement ring to be removed before the wedding day as this will break the commitment of the ring.

WEDDING DRESS The advent of bridesmaids comes from old pagan rituals when the bridesmaid used to distract and confuse any evil spirits that may be after the bride during the ceremony. Hiding from evil spirits was also one of the reasons behind the veil tradition although there are several sources of the veil tradition, including evil spirits. The white dress is also used to represent the purity and virginal nature of the bride.

BRIDAL BOUQUET The bridal bouquet symbolises many things ranging from life, growth, and fertility with different flowers meaning different things for the marriage. Some popular flowers include: Acacia = Elegance Chrysanthemum (red) = I love you Chrysanthemum (white) = Truth Forget-me-not = True love and remembrance Gardenia = Joy

Honeysuckle = Generosity Irises = Wisdom Lily = Majesty Orange Blossom = Purity and virginity Orchids = Fertility Roses = Love Tulip = Love Violet = Faithfulness

WEDDING CEREMONY The ceremony itself is rife with traditions such as the previously mentioned "giving away of the bride" and wedding dress but there are many small behaviours that are steeped in traditions. Such as the need for the groom to be at the church before the bride for good luck, while the bride must not walk down the aisle on time and must lead with her right foot. Flower girls and the petals they spread are used to represent the fertility of the couple and the children they will have.

SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW, SOMETHING BORROWED AND SOMETHING BLUE Perhaps one of the oldest and most popular wedding traditions, the four elements are used to bring different positive aspects to the marriage. Something old: Continuity and a link to the bride's past and family. Something new: Optimism and hope for the future of the marriage and its success. Something borrowed: Happiness shared from happily married couple. Something blue: Faithfulness, loyalty and fidelity with the blue item usually being the garter belt of the bride.

The right-hand lady The maid of honour is usually a close friend or relative of the bride who becomes her confidante during the months leading up the wedding day and on the big day itself. The maid of honour has one of the most important roles in making sure the bride and groom's wedding is a success. Below we have listed some of the top maid of honour duties to make the process more manageable and creative:

PRE-WEDDING DAY * Helping the bride in the months leading up to the wedding day with choosing her wedding gown, stationery, church, reception venue, and generally any assistance she needs in organising everything. * Make sure the bridesmaids and flower girls get to their dress fittings. * Organise any pre-wedding celebrations, with the assistance of the bridesmaids, including the bridal shower and the hen's night.

THE BIG DAY * The maid of honour is to be by the bride's side to help her deal with all the anxiety and stress she may be feeling. * Helping the bride get dressed, taking care of the hair and make-up people, as well as photographers and any other bridal party members. * Making sure the bridesmaids and flower girls know their roles. * Keeping an eye on the bride's veil as she enters the church and adjust it accordingly. * Taking care of the bride's bouquet and the groom's ring during the ceremony.

ANDREW STUIVENBERG PHOTOGRAPHY 26 // East Gippsland Wedding Guide and Planner

*Every bride will be in need of support and emotions will be running high throughout, so it is imperative to be sympathetic, understanding, organised and patient.

How to calm the pre-wedding jitters The night before or the morning of a wedding is one of the most stressful times in one’s life.

will allow you to breathe easily and think clearly. 3. Play some relaxing music while you get dressed.

Whether you are a bride, bridesmaid, mother of the bride or a close friend, pre-wedding nerves are bound to rear their ugly head. You may begin sweating or your heart may palpitate. Learn how to calm those pre-wedding nerves and enjoy the big day.

4. Inhale aromatherapy scents or burn some scented candles. Lavender is a great scent that is proven to relax and calm your nerves. Escape into an aromatherapy bath or head to the spa for a treatment involving these stress-removers. 5. Make a list about all the things you love about your fiancé.

1. Do something other than preparing for the wedding itself and take your mind off it. Get your hair done. Get a manicure. Go for a walk. Expend some energy with a physical activity that will clear your mind and body.

6. Spend time with friends and family members who make you laugh. Go out for a few wines (don’t over do it) and share stories. Get your mind off the nerves and jitters.

2. Drink plenty of water. Keep a bottle nearby. The more fluids you drink, the more hydrated your body will be. This

7. Be sure to eat well. Many brides go on crash diets that leave them feeling weak and depleated. Rest, relax and enjoy.

Romance under swaying palms The high cost of weddings is continuing to skyrocket and many young couples have put their fingers to work seeking alternate locations where a resort offers a whole package, often including the honeymoon itself. This alternative obviously restricts the number of guests who will be happy to spend the extra money to fly off to the chosen destination, but as far as the bride and groom are concerned the immediate family and wedding party agreeing to go is of the primary importance. Invited guests will often jump at the excuse to enjoy a holiday after the event, also ensuring this wedding will be one to remember. Coopers Travel in Bairnsdale has quite a selection of wedding locations they can advise their clients on, the benefits of having a travel agent arrange everything takes the hassle and stress from the couple’s shoulders.

Tahiti, Hawaii, Fiji and the Cook Islands are the most sought after locations and all the above have a number of resorts. Following on from this, the consultants at Coopers Travel were unanimous in declaring Hawaii as the most popular destination for honeymooners, the almost guaranteed warm weather, the magnificent beaches and surf, the stylish resorts and the fabulous shopping, all add up to an appeal for Aussie couples. Plus, it is considered safe! Bali, once the most sought after destination, always raises a few concerns these days and while it is still a very popular holiday spot, many couples are not prepared to risk their wedding or honeymoon there.

This setting could be your ideal, a wedding ceremony under the swaying palms on a tropical isle.

Resorts can arrange the official celebrant or minister of religion, the reception and breakfast, the cake, the flowers, the hairdresser and the photographer. Having all this arranged for you isn’t everyone’s wish, many couples, especially the bride to be, are happy to become immersed in the arrangements. But with today’s busy lifestyle the alternative can be very attractive as well as cost effective. And just where can these resorts be found? Bali, 30 // East Gippsland Wedding Guide and Planner

Brodi and Brad’s garden wedding Who: Brodi Whelan (25), from Lake Tyers Beach, and Brad McLeod (28), of Bairnsdale. When: January 28, 2012.

Bridesmaids: The bridesmaids wore full-length silk dresses designed by Howard Showers in hues of black, grey, green, lilac and pink. Flower girl Tulli wore an off-white tulle dress.

Where: The garden ceremony was held at Brodi’s parents home in Lake Tyers Beach and the reception took place at the Lakes Entrance Golf Club.

Flowers: The simple posies of lilac roses were from Lime Lily in Bairnsdale, the attendants’ flowers being smaller copies of Brodi’s larger posy.

Menu: Guests enjoyed a standing entrée as the bridal party had photos taken. The main meal was sit down with two dishes, a Thai fish salad, or rack of lamb on a bed of mashed potato and broccolini, catered by Jacqui Banson Catering.

Decorations: Brodi’s mum and friends decorated the garden for the ceremony. Bairnsdale Party Hire decorated the walls and ceiling of the golf club for the reception. The tables were decorated by family members and were adorned with simple glass vases with candles on sand and wrapped in vines from the nearby beach.

Dessert was the wedding cake, a chocolate mousse mud cake with berry coulis, provided by Six Sisters in Lakes Entrance. Transport: Brodi arrived at the wedding with her father in a black AMG Mercedes Sports and the girls travelled in two 320i BMWs. Family and friends owned the cars. Bridal party: Head bridesmaid was Penny Wolfe. Lauren Buckley and Lisa Carter also attended Brodi. Best man Andrew Walker, Tim Stephenson and Logan Austin, attended Brad. The couple’s 10-month-old daughter, Tulli McLeod was flower girl. Guests: 160. Dress: Brodi’s dress was by Italian designer Justin Alexander. The lace straps were hand-beaded, the bodice had a heavy lace, and the skirt had many layers of tulle. She wore a three-quarter length, three-tiered veil and her Nan’s pearls. 32 // East Gippsland Wedding Guide and Planner

Photography: Brad’s Melbourne based cousin Katy Plumridge was the official photographer for the day. Honeymoon: The couple travelled with their daughter Tulli in a campervan for seven nights in Tasmania. Later in 2012 they will have another two weeks in Queensland to complete the honeymoon. The best part: The reception was a great big party and simply a huge celebration. Getting ready with the girls was also exciting, anticipating the big day ahead. What would you do differently if you had your day again? Nothing! The day was perfect, everything went smoothly, and I’d do it all again (except for spending all the money!) Best advice: The day goes so fast. Whatever happens will happen anyway, so just enjoy it and have fun.

Writing wedding vows Writing wedding vows can be a daunting task, but making your vows unique and from the heart is the best way to add that personal touch to your special day.

What does marriage mean to you? Why do you want to be a married person?

Sit down in a quiet space with paper and pen and answer these questions.

What are their funny, quirky habits that you love about them?

Even if you don't think the answer will end up in your wedding vows, still take the time to write it down. It may help you in the long run. If you encounter writer's block, first try taking a short break. What is the single greatest thing about the person you are going to marry? What are their strengths and weaknesses? Why will they make the ideal partner for you? When did you know that you were in love/ know that this person was the one you wanted to marry?

What is your most favorite memory of your partner?

You’ll find that once you’ve answered these basic questions that the rest will just flow naturally. If you still think you don’t have enough material consult the experts, ask your friends, recite your favourite poem. Try reading what you've written out loud to a trusted friend or family member. Ideally, this person will be someone who is a good writer, and someone who knows your relationship. Once you've worked out a final version, practice reading it on your own, several times to make sure you are comfortable with it.

Select the perfect ring It is tradition for the groom to select a ring to give to the bride however these days rings can be bought by the man, the couple together, or a partner for the other. The following are a few tips to help you choose the perfect ring:

ALICE CAMPBELL PHOTOGRAPHY 34 // East Gippsland Wedding Guide and Planner

to consider platinum or white gold. 3. The traditional shape for an engagement diamond is round, and these diamonds are usually the most radiant. However, more unusual shapes are becoming popular - marquise (petal shape), princess (square cut), or oval and pear-shaped jewels.

1. Before you arrive at the jewellers, you need to consider what type of metal you would like the ring to be made of; the cut and carat of the diamond, and how will you will have it set.

4. Conventional solitaire engagement rings use a fourprong setting where the diamond stands out from the ring. A bezel setting keeps the diamond flush with the metal band.

2. Most brides will already have a preference for gold or silver coloured metals, as most skin tones suit one colour better. If you prefer silver, you might want

5. Diamonds have a clarity rating or grade that refers to the amount of flaws in the stone. The flaws in a medium grade diamond won't be visible to the naked eye.

The best man’s speech If you've been selected as the best man for a wedding, chances are you've wondered how to write and deliver a best man speech that will be remembered. This guide can also be used to help a male friend or relative that has been given the opportunity to deliver a best man’s speech and might like a few pointers. Following these simple steps will help deliver a flawless speech one that both toasts and honours the happy couple.

MAKE IT PERSONAL You were chosen as the best man by the groom because of your unique personality. Therefore it is important that your best man speech reflects who you really are. The groom is counting on you to be yourself - don't let him down. With this in mind, begin to write a best man speech by playing to your strengths. If you're not naturally a comedian, don't worry. You don't have to make the audience roll in the aisles laughing. Best man speeches can be hilariously funny or they can be heartfelt and sincere.

KEEP IT BRIEF There is nothing worse than best man speeches that go on too long. When writing your speech, remember to practice it with a watch to check its length. Keep your best man speech short and sweet and you'll be fine.

INTRODUCE YOURSELF

CS PHOTOGRAPHY 36 // East Gippsland Wedding Guide and Planner

One common mistake in best man speeches is that the best man neglects to introduce himself, or explain how he knows the bride and groom. Remember that weddings are full of distant relatives and casual acquaintances; many people there will not have the faintest idea who you are.

Your day, your way On the wedding day the ceremony is the heart and soul of the occasion and choosing a celebrant who is sensitive to your wishes is vital. Civil marriage celebrant, Bobbi Wolffenbuttel has as her motto, “Your day … your way”. These few words perfectly express Bobbie’s approach to working with a couple to plan the wedding ceremony. Bobbi’s desire is to ensure the ceremonies reflect each couple’s unique relationship in style, tone and language, “I am really flexible, it is all about them”. “Some people want flowery, classical language and others want to keep it simple and down to earth, after all these people are letting me into their lives and I aim to provide the ceremony they really want”. As a well-known resident of Lakes Entrance and mother of four children Bobbi has a wealth of local knowledge. Since starting her business as a celebrant in 2008, she has conducted many ceremonies where she has had a friendship with the bride or groom since they were children. “My attitude to a wedding is it should be fun, relaxed and joyous,” she said. Bobbi particularly enjoys weddings outdoors, “I love the lakes, the beach and the rivers. “Yes I can wear grown-up heels and present a polished elegant style but I really love the sand between my toes and the wind in my face,” she said.

Bobbi encourages as much involvement from friends and family in the ceremony as the couple are comfortable with because she said it is a celebration in front of the people who dearly love the couple. “Let them see who, you are,” she said. “I always like to introduce the groomsmen and bridesmaids and talk about their connection to the couple.” The celebrant and the couple work together to create the ideal celebration Bobbi offers a resource package with sample ceremonies, readings, rituals and ideas. The celebrant is responsible for all legal documentation, lodged with the relevant authorities and she will present the couple with an official certificate of marriage. Bobbi is a talented calligrapher, adding a special touch to the documents she produces. “There are in fact only three legal components to a marriage, the momitum (a legal paragraph from the Marriage Act), the vows verbatim and the signatures, witnessed by two people over 18. Bobbi said there is no reason why the actual legal part should take longer than 20-30 minutes, the ceremony can be quite simple, and yet quite beautiful in it’s simplicity. “The whole crux of the ceremony is the exchange of vows forget everything else this is the essence of the entire occasion. “My aim is that the ceremony flows joyfully and seamlessly into the reception and party, it should never be boring. “I’m happy to do all kinds of ceremonies except sky diving, underwater or nude,” she said.

Stay relaxed, enjoy the moment strapped dresses with high waists and A-line skirts above the knee. Flower girl Billie wore a sweet ivory dress. The men: The men wore three piece grey suits, Jamie’s tie and vest in ivory. Pageboy Jensen wore a grey suit and tie to match the men.

Who: Erica Bromwich was 27, a registered nurse, and Jamie Lynch was 26, a HR coordinator. Both worked in Shepparton and have moved to Bairnsdale to continue in the same roles. When: March 3, 2012,

Flowers: Erica had a bouquet of white oriental lilies and white orchids. Decorations: Tables at the reception were decorated simply, with candles and vases of long-stemmed white orchids atop shining mirrors. Photography: Friend and wedding guest Janina Jackson was the photographer on the day.

Where: Both the ceremony and reception took place at Redcourt Homestead, west of Bairnsdale, Menu: Guests enjoyed nibbles while the bridal party had photos taken. The main meal was a buffet style affair with roast lamb and chicken, with roast vegetables and salads. Dessert was the wedding cake; a two tiered milk and white chocolate mud cake. There was very little left. Transport: Erica, her father and the flower girl and pageboy arrived at the venue in a horse drawn cart arranged by Paul McLeod and Suzie Whelan. Erica’s attendants arrived in a vehicle borrowed from her brother.

Honeymoon: The happy couple honeymooned in Hawaii for two weeks, spending time on Oahu and the Big Island. The best part: Erica’s expectations of the day were far exceeded. “The whole day felt magical. Everyone was relaxed and had a wonderful time,” Erica said. Best advice: Stay relaxed and enjoy the moment. Be sure to delegate and give different people small jobs to take the pressure off of you.

Bridal party: Erica’s sister, Mikhaila Bromwich, was maid of honour. Bridesmaids were Jamie’s sister, Kasey Lynch, and Erica’s close friend Pascale Budge. Jamie was attended by his best man Steve Pettitt, Sam Craighead and Ben Tyers. Niece, Billie Kee, aged three, was flower girl, and nephew Jensen Bromwich, aged 5, was pageboy. Pre-wedding nutrition Having a food and fitness plan will make sure you are ready to walk down the aisle with the healthiest bridal body ever and will alleviate unwanted stress and anxiety.

PREPARE Start early. Preparation is key. You can’t expect to see miracles overnight but if you adopt an exercise regime and healthy eating plan months in advance then you will see results. Get outdoors more often. Go for a walk, be active, drink plenty of water, take a

multivitamin and eat nutritious food full of vitamins and minerals that will have you looking your best.

FITNESS Set yourself a realistic timeframe. Start your wedding exercise plan six to nine months before your big day. Choose an outdoor activity that you love and mix it up. Go swimming, take an exercise class like Zumba, boxing or a cycle class. Join a group sport such as netball, basketball or hockey. Upload some great tunes to get you motivated

for exercise and go for a run outside or walk the dog.

NUTRITION Control your portion size and get into a habit of making this a part of your daily ritual. Eat a balanced diet that includes carbohydrates, dairy, fruit and vegetables and lean proteins. Try to eat regular and don’t starve yourself as this can lead to a slowed metabolism. Keep some healthy snacks in your draw at work such as little snack packs of raw almonds, cranberries and fresh fruit.

Choosing the right dress Finding the perfect wedding dress can be a daunting experience but one of the most important things to work out is what style will best suit your body shape. Do plenty of research and try on as many dresses as you can. You can use styles you have spotted in magzines for inspiration but remember, what looks good on a model might not work for you! Whether you are going to buy a dress off the rack or have one made, always get advice from experienced staff at bridal boutiques or seamstresses - and always take along a friend or family member whose opinion you value and trust. Comfort is also a key consideration. Yes, you want to look beautiful but this is also a dress you will wear all day and most of the night; you want to be able to walk and sit elegantly and even dance. The following are some basic rules to observe when choosing dress styles that will suit and compliment your figure.

IF YOU’RE PEAR-SHAPED

IF YOU’RE RECTANGLE-SHAPED The hips and shoulders are about the same width, and there is not much definition at the waist. Go for a waistline with a V shape to create the illusion of a smaller waist. Structured and corseted bodices with fairly full skirts also achieve this effect. Keep necklines wide and use detailing either above or below the waist, not both. AVOID: Halter necks or high necks that make the shoulders look narrow and as a result do not flatter the waist. Straight-cut dresses can make you look boxy.

IF YOU’RE TRIANGLE-SHAPED This is an inverted triangle, with the shoulders wider than the hips. Bias-cut or straight cut dresses work and this shape can easily take very full ball gown styles. Halter-necks or higher cut necks balance shoulders and hips and flatter a smaller chest. Bustles or bows add shape. AVOID: Very low-cut necklines or full or very fancy sleeves and wider necklines.

This is a common body shape where the hips are wider than the shoulders and the waist is usually quite well defined. Strapless, V-neck or scooped necklines, possibly in off shoulder styles, are suitable. A-line is the best shape, but avoid a full skirt, while diagonal draping on the bodice is very flattering.

Hips and shoulders are the same width and there is a welldefined waist. Strapless, V-neck or scooped necklines work best. Off-the-shoulder and A-line styles also work and use ruching or draping to disguise bumpy bits.

AVOID: Halter-necks or high cut necks that make hips look bigger. Bias or straight cut dresses also emphasis hips, as do full, gathered or pleated skirts.

AVOID: Bias-cut or straight dresses don’t suit the typical curves of the hourglass. Gathered or pleated skirts can make your hips look big, so be careful.
