Who: Krystle Smith (28) (nee Cunningham) and Jarred Smith (24), of Sale.
over the guest tables with fairy lights provided by Judith and Peter Robbins of Bairnsdale.
When: April 11, 2015 at 3.30pm.
“I did most of the smaller decorations myself; I was going for a woodland type theme.
Venue: Ceremony and reception both at Kilmany Park Mansion.
“I made the centrepieces, lolly table decorations, wishing well, polaroid table decorations, bar signs, seating plan, place cards, I had arrow signs out in the grounds pointing to ceremony location, toilets, reception etc. They reminded me of something out of Alice in Wonderland.
Guests: 100 Menu: Catering was by Duart Homestead, with canapés during happy hour served in the mansion and grounds before the reception. Entrée: Canapés included baby arrancini with romesco and basil; vine ripened tomato and basil bruschetta; crisp chorizo sausage with roasted garlic aioli; Gippsland lamb sliders with red onion relish and Persian feta; and avocado sushi rolls.
“I also had an old wooden ladder, which belonged to my grandpa who passed away when I was a kid. On each rung of the ladder I had wedding photos of my parents, Jarred’s parents, my grandparents and Jarred’s grandparents.”
Main: Aged grain and grass fed eye fillet of beef baked with roasted garlic mash, local greens, sweet potato crisps and red wine jus, and chicken saltimbocca - chicken breast wrapped in proscuitto pocketed with brie, verjuice and crispy rosemary potatoes. Dessert: Wedding cake, made by Jemma-Louise Cakes, in Bairnsdale, served with cream and berries with a berry coulis. “We had a different flavour in each tier, and the cake was made to look like it was tree logs stacked on top of each other with K + J carved inside a heart on the “tree”. Transport: The bride arrived in a white 1926 Essex, the bridesmaids in a dark green 1930s Chrysler Royal and a burgundy 1930s Desoto. Bridal party: Maids of honour were Anji and Sam, bridesmaids were Tash, Alex, Anji, Sam and the bride’s

sister, Paige. Michael was best man with groomsmen Nathan, Andrew, Brayden and the bride’s brother, Michael. Dress: Boseda by Pronovias, purchased from Fairy Tales Bridal Boutique, Moonee Ponds. It was the 10th dress that was tried on. Bridesmaids’ dresses: Infinity dresses in “Tiffany Blue” purchased off Etsy.com from a store called The Dainty Yard. All were floor length, with each girl having a different style from the waist up.
Flowers: “My flowers were done by the lovely Jannita from Evie & B. The bouquet was an assortment of wildflowers, including baby’s breath, veronica, salvias, delphiniums and a few more I don’t know the name of!” Bridesmaids had a simple posy of baby’s breath wrapped in twine. Decorations: “The reception was decorated with jars of wildflowers and succulents. Two magnificent floral chandeliers hung from the roof

“But one thing that does stand out is our first dance, which was to Elvis Presley’s Love me tender. We didn’t practice anything, it wasn’t anything spectacular, but it was the first time for the whole day where it felt like it was just Jarred and me, even though 100 guests were staring at us. We got to be close and talk to each other properly for the first time as husband and wife. It was super romantic and a moment I will remember forever. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Best advice: “Don’t sweat the small stuff, because you really will be too happy to care on the day.”

Wouldn’t change a thing Who: Alanna Davidson and Morgan Harris. When: January 24, 2015. Venue: Ceremony at Morgan’s parents’ Granite Rock property and reception at The Riversleigh, Bairnsdale. Menu: Catering was arranged by New Leaf. Guests enjoyed cocktails and canapés in The Riversleigh garden while the bridal party had photos taken. Main: Wrapped chicken over risotto and rack of lamb over mash. Dessert: Wedding cake by Jemma-Louise Cakes. Transport: Own cars were used. Bridal party: Maid of honour Georgina Preston, bridesmaids Tashi Choden, Ashlee Dixon and Jess Harris. Best man was Vince Corbett, groomsmen Daniel Wake, Nathan Davidson and Jarod Amos. Suits were navy blue with tan shoes and belts. Dress: A strapless white dress with a long train and separate diamond belt. I wore my hair down and a veil for the ceremony only. Bridesmaids’ dresses: Dresses were all different pastel colours. Flowers: Beautiful pastels from Van Berkel Flowers. Decorations: The Riversleigh was decorated by Lauren Pool. Photographer: Mark Ashley The best part: “Getting ready with the girls and then getting in the car with my dad and brother. My dad was so nervous! I
loved walking down the aisle, just like I dreamed about since I started dating Morgan. Also after all the formalities were done, we all just partied on the dance floor.” What would you do differently?: “I don’t think I would change a thing. I loved the whole day and I want to do it again.” Best advice: “Try to enjoy every part of planning, it all goes so quick.”

I wanted to run down the aisle! Who: Annmaree Robbins (28) and Jason Havilah (26), of Lucknow. When: May 2, 2015. Venue: The ceremony was at Nyerimilang Heritage Park and the reception at The Bellevue on the Lakes, Lakes Entrance. Guests: 65. Menu: A drop set menu. Entrée: Creamy seafood chowder with local fish and crusty bread or roast butternut pumpkin soup with gruyere croutes and chives. Main: Oven roasted chicken breast with prosciutto and leek mash potato and baby carrots or eye fillet of beef with lyonnaise, asparagus and red wine jus. Dessert: Tiramisu gateaux or pecan pie with butterscotch and clotted cream. Transport: Our Grey 2009 BMW 320i and my maid of honour’s Red 2013 BMW 325i. Bridal party: Maid of honour Amanda Princi and bridesmaids Erin Richards and Bec Griffiths. Dress: Purchased from Raffaele Ciuca in Melbourne. It was an Allure bridal dress, which was very romantic and classic. It’s a ball gown that combines lace and
English net; the lace bodice has a scoop neckline with cap sleeves while Swarovski crystals accent the waistline. Bridesmaids’ dresses: Purchased from Dutchess Boutique in Melbourne. Single strap dark plum colour dresses made from chiffon with gathering around the waistline. Flowers: All flowers for the day were done by Forevermore Flowers in Bairnsdale. They are artificial but looked real and added amazing colours.
Having amazing people helping you get ready really helps. Our hair was done by Loren Brooks, who just helped keep my mind at ease, while our makeup was done by Melanie Ceveri who helped lighten the mood. Also find a photographer who you click with as you’re going to spend all day with them. I had Alice Campbell and she was so easy to get along with and was able to keep us all smiling and laughing even after hours of photos!
Decorations: The ceremony was decorated by Jason and our reception by Helen and Marg Decorators, myself and my bridesmaid’s on the morning. The best part: The moment when I first saw Jason that day, it was like the world just stopped for that split second and then I wanted to run down the aisle! What would you do differently again: Worrying about every little detail. You honestly don’t notice the half of it on the day and your guests don’t know any better if you have all the little details or not. Best advice: Take time out after the ceremony to enjoy each other’s company. It’s a long day and between photos, family and formalities the day will fly. It only needs to be 10 minutes, but it’s good to just enjoy some quiet time together. 10 EAST GIPPSLAND WEDDING GuIDE & PLANNER | www.eastgippslandweddingexpo.com.au

Make ‘dressing up’ fun Avoid stress when choosing the best wedding gown for you by making the process lots of fun.
fabric you can then investigate the options available to you for embellishments and the best colour to suit your skin tone.
Try on different styles, materials and colours. In other words, play dress ups.
While wedding dresses can be any colour, they are usually white or ivory, with ivory being the most popular by far.
Most brides have a fairly clear picture in their mind of what they would like their wedding dress to look like, but even then what we picture as looking gorgeous on may not actually fit the picture. It is essential that you take the time to try on a number dresses before deciding on the final gown. Don’t worry about colours and embellishments when initially playing with different styles and fabrics. What you need to look at first up is the feel and look, so that you can be comfortable on the day and that the cut falls flatteringly for your figure. You’ll develop a taste of what you want in your own gown, and may even fall in love with a gown that is far from your initial dream dress. Once you’ve decided on the style and
White can be difficult to wear in such vast amounts, whereas ivory is softer and allows guests to see the bride wearing the dress, rather than seeing the dress first and the bride second. On your dress-up day it’s a good idea to bring along a friend or two. Boutique attendants are skilled with assisting in choosing the most flattering style for a bride-to-be, but a friend can help in matching your personality with the dress ensuring it truly does suit the wearer.
To ensure bridesmaids’ dresses match each other it is important to order them at the same time to avoid inconsistencies in colours due to different batch lots. For attendees with differing body shapes dresses should be styled to suit the individual and all by the same designer. Wedding gowns can be purchased off-therack and adjusted, but should you decide to have one made you will need to be aware of the time it takes to create a wedding dress. Realistically a dress can take around six months to create, so eight months should be allowed to allow for any alterations.
Don’t be afraid to have a long train if that is what you want. A train can look impressive heading down the aisle, and can be designed to fold into a bustle for more freedom at the reception.
Even with the most accurate of initial measurements it is wise to order your dress a size or two larger. Adjustments are much simpler if the dress is to be made smaller, rather than trying to make a dress bigger, perhaps even needing to add more material.
When choosing bridesmaid dresses, a bride usually has a strong feel for the colour she would like the dresses to be.
As with all aspects of the wedding it is important to work within your budget when deciding on a dress.

MAID OF HONOUR
If you’ve been selected as the best man for a wedding, chances are you’ve wondered how to write and deliver a best man speech that will be remembered.
The maid of honour becomes the bride’s confidante during the months leading up to the wedding day and on the big day itself. The maid of honour has one of the most important roles in making sure the bride and groom’s wedding is a success. Pre-wedding day: * Helping the bride in the months leading up to the wedding day with choosing her wedding gown, stationery, church, reception venue, and generally any assistance she needs in organising everything. * Make sure the bridesmaids and flower girls get to their dress fittings. * Organise any pre-wedding celebrations, with the assistance of the bridesmaids, including the bridal shower and the hen’s night. The big day: * The maid of honour is to be by the bride’s side to help her deal with all the anxiety and stress she may be feeling. * Helping the bride get dressed, taking care of the hair and make-up people, as well as photographers and any other bridal party members. * Making sure the bridesmaids and flower girls know their roles.

BEST MAN The speech:
Introduce yourself: One common mistake in best man speeches is that the best man neglects to introduce himself, or explain how he knows the bride and groom. Remember that weddings are full of distant relatives and casual acquaintances; many people there will not have the faintest idea who you are. Make it personal: You were chosen as the best man by the groom because of your unique personality. Therefore it is important that your best man speech reflects who you really are. The groom is counting on you to be yourself - don’t let him down. With this in mind, begin to write a best man speech by playing to your strengths. If you’re not naturally a comedian, don’t worry. You don’t have to make the audience roll in the aisles laughing. Best man speeches can be hilariously funny or they can be heartfelt and sincere. Keep it brief: There is nothing worse than best man speeches that go on too long. When writing your speech, remember to practice it with a watch to check its length. Keep your best man speech short and sweet and you’ll be fine.

Style with a twist An important feature of a wedding’s style is the flowers, and choosing the right blooms and forms for your big day will reflect your personality and the love that will abound on the day. Pollen Appeal, in Lakes Entrance, can help make the choice an enjoyable process. With more than 15 years experience in the florist industry, Angela Matheson opened Pollen Appeal in August 2013, having sold her Kooyong florist to move her young family to East Gippsland. It soon became a busy boutique florist, offering a professional, adaptable and friendly service. Catering for any wedding style, from sleek elegant affairs to loose fresh “just picked” country style, Angela works closely with the happy couple to achieve the look and feel they are after
for the magical day. She ensures that the experience is enjoyable, from the free initial consultation right through to the wedding day. “Styling your wedding should be fun,” Angela said. “Choose seasonal and be confident that your style and vision are in the right hands. “Bring along to the initial consultation any pictures, images from Pinterest or Instagram, and try to have an idea of the colour schemes you like. “Include elements that are significant to you and your partner. “And ask as many questions as you like, walking out of your chosen florist knowing that you are in capable hands.”

Personality and style in print As personal as your wedding is, your invitations and other items of stationery should also reflect your personality and style. Your stationery is the first peek that your guests will have of your wedding style, whether it’s the invitation or a save the date card. It’s not just the wording within the invitation that informs guests of the formality of the event, with the stationery you choose also hinting at the expectations – classic and elegant or glam and modern. Only the key points should be included in the text of the invitation. Squeezing too much in not only makes it harder to read, but also takes away from the elegance. The font should also be one that is not over the top fancy and easy to read. Ceremony time and location, the hosts, the couple’s names and RSVP are often all that is needed. Dress code can also be included, but is not always necessary. Inserts that can be included with the invitation include RSVP cards, wishing well cards, maps and accommodation cards. Wishing well cards are becoming more popular with more couples requesting no gifts, preferring cash for the honeymoon or to purchase significant household items such as whitegoods. It’s a good idea to code your RSVP cards. It’s amazing how many RSVPs are returned with no indication of who sent it, or with writing that cannot be read. A small number in a corner on the back of each card, and a list kept with names corresponding to each number, will let you know exactly who it is without
the worry.
stationery inside.
Invitations should be mailed six to eight weeks prior to the wedding, and no more than 10. While you may want to know ASAP who’s coming, sending the invitations too early can backfire, recipients popping it in their ‘to do later’ pile, leading to a possible late arrival.
Once you have finalised your design with your printer, triple check your proof. It will get expensive if there’s a mistake you didn’t pick and you need to get them printed all over again. Check the spelling, the date, everything.
It’s nicer to have handwritten addresses on envelopes, or even calligraphy. This is something that you can do yourself, or share with your bridesmaids. Don’t lick or even use a sponge to seal envelopes. Glue sticks are perfect for this. Using a wet sponge may damage the precious
In working out how many to order, count the households, not the number of guests. Many of your guests will no doubt be couples, or even families, who will only require one invitation. Those over 18 but still living at home will need their own invitation. Order extras to cover for mistakes as well as extra envelopes. If you have any left over after your big day they’ll

make great keepsakes. It can be costly to get extras printed after the initial order. And when you’re designing your invitations take the opportunity to have your other stationery items printed, too. James Yeates Printing can cater for more than just your invitation needs with packages that can include RSVP cards, wishing well cards, accommodation cards, place cards, table numbers and envelopes.

Modern, timeless and fashionably elegant A passion for photography and a love of capturing the special moments in people’s lives, husband and wife team, Dave and Angela Landua, provide something a little more special at Danae Studios. Dave and Angela were both photographers long before they met. They were literally in the same conversation at a photography conference seven months before actually meeting properly at the national awards the following year. After falling madly in love, they got married in 2014 and feel that their love was just meant to be - fate works in funny ways. Somewhere along the way they combined their individual businesses (Danae Photography and Haute Photography) and now work together running Danae Studios. They are joined by Hannah Gilbert who helps with everything they can throw her way at the studio and also photographs newborns and weddings for some of their wonderful clients. Dave, Angela and Hannah are passionate about what they do as photographers and are very thankful that they are lucky enough to say photography is their fulltime job. The multi-award winning team delivers not only the best products available but also an experience unequalled in Gippsland. They understand that couples want the best from their investment, the experience and knowledge provided by Danae Studios being a big help as you are guided through the many options. They pride themselves on creating an unforgettable photographic experience, always ensuring they create a completely tailored collection for each individual client. No two experiences are the same because no two clients are the same. They want your photographs to be exactly what you dream of. Angela and Dave offer some fantastic advice for your wedding photography: “Finding the right wedding photographer for you both is a big decision. Ensuring you find someone who is the correct fit for you and your style is just as important as choosing your wedding venue. You spend such a large amount of
time on your wedding day with your photographer, and we’re normally the only vendor our couples see after the wedding as well, so we’re pretty good friends by the time we deliver their album! “It sounds like a cliché (especially coming from a photographer), but we all know that your wedding photographs (and video if you get one) are really all you have to remember the day by. Photography can certainly be a large portion of your wedding budget, but being smart when making that investment will pay off in the years to come. “Unfortunately we hear stories all the time of couples that regret not having a professional photographer or not booking the photographer they really wanted and realising after the wedding that they wished they’d done things differently. You should just click with the right photographer for you, and by choosing a reputable professional (talk to your friends who’s photography you loved, and look for an AIPP member), you should feel that your investment is the right one for you and you can trust your chosen photographer to provide everything you want, not just in the photography but also the products and service.” “Allowing plenty of time for photography will help your day to run smoothly
and stress free. “Communicate with your chosen photographer when planning your timeline for your day. Brides, have your girls do a trial run of getting you in your dress, especially if you’ve chosen a lace up style. Grooms, if you’re not someone who wears a tie regularly, have a practice run of that, too. Make sure you have video tutorial nearby or even better, a groomsman who knows how to do a double Windsor! “A professional photographer should be able to give you advice on your timeline as they’ve done it many times before and will know how much time they need to create the images you’re dreaming of. Trying to rush between multiple locations can really eat into your first hours as husband and wife. Discuss possible locations before your day and have a relaxed plan. Who knows what the weather will do. Trust your photographer to make the best of any situation. If you’ve made the right choice in a professional, they’ll find the perfect light, rain, hail or shine. Pack some nibbles for this part of the day as nerves might mean you haven’t eaten much beforehand. Relax and enjoy the company of your new husband/wife while your photographer captures images you’ll treasure forever.”

Let’s make a wedding date Of all the decisions to be made when planning your wedding, setting the date is perhaps the most important. Many other decisions cannot realistically be made until you know when your big day will be.
Your wedding date can also dictate the flowers that are available for your decorations and of course your bouquet. If you have your heart set on sunflowers then a winter wedding is certainly not for you.
There are a number of factors that might be taken into consideration when choosing your wedding date.
HONEYMOON
SEASON Spring is the most popular time for weddings in East Gippsland, but every season offers beauty in its own unique way. Close your eyes and envision how your dream wedding will look. Do you see rose gardens in full bloom, snow capped mountains or grapevines ready for harvest? These are all possibilities, but are dependent on the season. Perhaps you’ve dreamed of a strapless dress or a gown of heavy material and full sleeves. There is a time for each, and your comfort on the day is one thing that should definitely be considered.
You might want to head to the tropics for your honeymoon, so you’d want to avoid the stormy season. A European honeymoon would be best taken in our cooler months. If you want to head off on your honeymoon straight after the wedding, then your destination may determine your wedding date. But if you can hold off a few months between the wedding and the honeymoon, then you can travel whenever is best.
For the wedding of your dreams, allow plenty of time to plan and ensure everything you are looking for is available so you can lock in your date. WHO IS IMPORTANT?
While only two people absolutely have to be there on your wedding day (the bride and groom), you may want to consider other guests that are at the top of your list, the ones that you would hate to get married without.
PLANNING
The bridal party is a must, as are the parents of the bride and groom, but there will be others, too, who are important to either the bride or groom or both. It’s a good idea to ask your nearest and dearest about possible date conflicts before your date is set.
A whirlwind wedding can be done, but there will be sacrifices along the way. Your dream wedding dress can take months to make, your preferred photographer might not be available and your favourite venue could already by nabbed by another couple.
If you’ve considered all you need to in choosing your wedding date there should be no reason to sway once you’ve made the decision. Set the date, stick to it, and get on with the fun of organising everything that follows.

A decade of wedding expos When East Gippsland Newspaper’s advertising manager, Karinda Kelly, tossed around the idea a decade ago of bringing businesses together in one place to provide knowledge and services to brides and grooms planning their wedding, she had little idea of just how successful the event would become. This year the East Gippsland Wedding Expo celebrates 10 years with a move to a bigger venue and many more exhibitors than were involved at the very first event. It can be overwhelming planning a wedding, but the expo is a great place for brides and grooms to get ideas and speak to the wedding suppliers face to face, bringing it all together and hopefully relieving some of the pressure. The East Gippsland Wedding Guide given out at the expo is a resourceful tool with all types of wedding businesses included and a handy budget planner and timeline, which can help planning a wedding less stressful. “For the first nine years, the expo was held successfully at the Bairnsdale Sporting and Convention Centre. But as the event has grown, from 35 exhibitors in its first year to 53 in 2015, it was time to move on to a bigger venue at Nagle College,” Karinda said.
Reflections Photography have attended all 10 of the East Gippsland Wedding Expos.
a happy, successful wedding day for our brides and grooms.”
“In all the years, Reflections Photography is the only exhibitor to have participated in all 10 events.
Entry to the expo is by gold coin donation with the proceeds given to a different charity each year. In the last nine years the expo has donated $4822.90. This year’s proceeds will be donated to the East Gippsland Make-a-Wish Foundation.
“More than 400 people attend the expo each year, from all over East Gippsland, Gippsland and Melbourne with brides bringing their fiancés, mothers, bridesmaids and family members to discover what is on offer.”
The informative “Advice with the Pros” session was introduced in 2009 with a panel of four experts from different industries as well as a past bride sharing their knowledge and advice with the crowd.
Kristen Scott is one bride who made good use of information gleaned from the expo.
The popular “Bride of the Year” competition started in 2011 with brides from all over Gippsland submitting their favourite wedding photo. Twenty-six brides entered in the first year. This year there are 66, all vying for the public vote. The Bride of the Year will win an ultimate escape package at the Bellevue in Lakes Entrance.
“The expo was a great opportunity to actually see and meet some of the potential suppliers you may use for your wedding and get some ideas and contact details,” Kristen said. “I think the East Gippsland Wedding Guide that we received in our goodie bag was really good and once again provided all of the local contact details. “I prefered to organise my wedding through local suppliers, but without the opportunity at the expo to meet them and get details, I probably would have ended up purchasing online.” Marriage celebrant, Sherryl Veenker, is an expo regular. “The expo is great on a number of levels,” she said. “It provides an opportunity to meet prospective brides/grooms in a friendly atmosphere to discuss their aspirations for their wedding, meet other exhibitors to network and discuss ways to improve our service, talk to people from the community at large who are interested in attaining information about organising a wedding ceremony, and further showcase this beautiful region to visitors who may want to celebrate their wedding in East Gippsland. “The day is filled with much happiness and at the conclusion of the day we all realise why we do this wonderful job of organising
Still coordinating the expo, Karinda has seen trends come and go in industries over the years while others are timeless classics. “Exhibitors include photographers, celebrants, decorators and venues with new industry representatives for 2015 including photo booths, styling and fitness,” said. “Brides and grooms will receive a glass of bubbly on arrival with a goodie bag that will include a copy of the just released 2015/2016 East Gippsland Wedding Guide.” Being the 10th year, Karinda wanted to raise the bar of the prizes that were up for grabs. “There are 10 major prizes to be won, worth hundreds of dollars each, and some worth over a thousand,” Karinda said. Little Alice Café will have a pop up café to purchase lunch and for the first time there will be a chill out lounge for people to take a break and to cast their votes for the 2015 Bride of the Year competition. The Advice with the Pros session will be held at 11am with the fashion parade on a new look catwalk at 1.30pm.

No ring-ins – this is your decision As many brides have discovered, weddings carry a lot of tradition. Are mum’s words ringing in your ears at the thought of the guest list? ‘But they invited you to their daughter’s wedding!’
one for you. Go with your gut instinct and waste no more time. Buy it. On the other hand, if you don’t find what you love quickly, make sure to give yourself plenty of time to find the right one.
Thankfully the wedding rings are the domain of you and your loved one alone.
These days wedding ring design allows couples to be more daring and bold in their choices. Just like creating a unique wedding, personally designed rings are a way for couples to put some of themselves into their wedding.
Tradition once meant that ancient Egyptian couples exchanged rings of woven reed. We’ve since progressed to more lasting materials like gold and platinum and are now seeing the rise of individually designed rings. The styles, settings, metals and of course prices, seem almost endless. The key is to choose a piece that reflects your personality, lifestyle and tastes. As long as it’s within your budget, the one you see and keep coming back to is the
Matching his and her rings are still popular. If this is what you are after, be sure to shop together. Some couples may choose to have the same metal, but embellish the brides with diamonds or other gems to make hers a little different. Selecting the metal is an important
decision, as it will affect the cost and style of ring. The most popular metals are platinum and white and yellow gold. Platinum, while heavier and more durable, is also more expensive. If you love the look of platinum but it just doesn’t fit your budget, white gold is your best option. Yellow gold is the more traditional metal and is making a comeback. When buying gold, remember that it comes in different purities (carats). The higher the carat, the more gold it contains, but the softer the metal becomes. Don’t let the cost of the ring be the first thing you think of when you look at it. Decide on a budget and stick to it, that way when you look at it you will be reminded of your special day, not how much it set you back.

Who and how many bridesmaids? Choosing your bridal attendants can be a tricky process and can test friendships and family bonds, but do it right and you’ll keep the disappointments to a minimum.
Who you choose can really affect the dynamics of the party and the smooth running of the planning and eventually on the wedding day.
Before you begin to choose who, you will need to decide how many. Traditionally there should be one bridesmaid and one groomsman for every 50 guests, but there’s no hard and fast rule. A large wedding party indicates a formal wedding – if you’re looking for a small, intimate gathering, then 10 bridesmaids will be too many.
Choosing your sister or sister-in-law to be a bridesmaid generally works well if you get along well, but can cause misery if you are doing it simply because it is expected. Don’t feel you have to ask someone to be your bridesmaid just because they asked you. You may not even be as close as you once were, and there may very well be others you now feel closer to.
If you do ask someone and they say no, or if you don’t have enough bridal party positions for your closest friends, there are always other roles that they can play and still be a part of your special day. They might hand out programs, perform a song or do a reading.
Consider where you will be getting married. If you’re saying your vows in a sweet little chapel there may simply not be enough room for your wedding party and your guests.
Consider your expectations of how much involvement your bridesmaids will have in the lead up to the wedding. Don’t expect a bridesmaid from interstate to be able to assist with addressing invitations or preparing wedding favours.
And don’t feel as a bride that you have to have female attendants. It is becoming more popular for brides who have a best male friend to have them as a bridesman or simply attendant, and likewise female friends being groomswomen.
It’s important not to make assumptions. Asking someone you don’t particularly want in the bridal party because you presume they won’t be able to afford it and will say no can back fire. She might say yes and move heaven and earth to be
Whoever your choose to be in your bridal party, you must both be comfortable in the knowledge that you have made the right decision and can all work together to make your day as beautiful and enjoyable as possible.
The more attendants you have, the greater the potential for complications. Difficulties in coordinating other dates such as the bridal shower and hens party and agreeing on the bridesmaid dresses are just some of the issues that may arise the more attendants your have.
a part of it. And don’t not ask someone you really want for the same reason. They might also make an extra special effort to pay for it or you may offer to pay if absolutely necessary. Ask only who you want, regardless of their situation.

It’s all in the shape Finding the perfect wedding dress can be a daunting experience but one of the most important things to work out is what style will best suit your body shape. Do plenty of research and try on as many dresses as you can. You can use styles you have spotted in magazines for inspiration but remember, what looks good on a model might not work for you. Whether you are going to buy a dress off the rack or have one made, always get advice from experienced staff at bridal boutiques or seamstresses - and always take along a friend or family member whose opinion you value and trust. Comfort is also a key consideration. Yes, you want to look beautiful but this is also a dress you will wear all day and most of the night; you want to be able to walk and sit elegantly and even dance. The following are some basic rules to observe when choosing dress styles that will suit and compliment your figure.
If you’re pear-shaped: This is a common body shape where the hips are wider than the shoulders and the waist is usually quite well defined. Strapless, V-neck or scooped necklines, possibly in off shoulder styles, are suitable. A-line is the best shape, but avoid a full skirt, while diagonal draping on the bodice is very flattering. Avoid: Halter-necks or high cut necks that make hips look bigger. Bias or straight cut dresses also emphasis hips, as do full, gathered or pleated skirts.
result do not flatter the waist. Straight-cut dresses can make you look boxy. If you’re triangle-shaped: This is an inverted triangle, with the shoulders wider than the hips. Bias-cut or straight cut dresses work and this shape can easily take very full ball gown styles. Halter-necks or higher cut necks balance shoulders and hips and flatter a smaller chest. Bustles or bows add shape. Avoid: Very low-cut necklines or full or very fancy sleeves and wider necklines.
If you’re rectangle-shaped:
If you’re hourglass-shaped:
The hips and shoulders are about the same width, and there is not much definition at the waist. Go for a waistline with a V-shape to create the illusion of a smaller waist. Structured and corseted bodices with fairly full skirts also achieve this effect. Keep necklines wide and use detailing either above or below the waist, not both.
Hips and shoulders are the same width and there is a well-defined waist. Strapless, Vneck or scooped necklines work best. Off-the shoulder and A-line styles also work and use ruching or draping to disguise bumpy bits.
Avoid: Halter necks or high necks that make the shoulders look narrow and as a
Avoid: Bias-cut or straight dresses don’t suit the typical curves of the hourglass. Gathered or pleated skirts can make your hips look big, so be careful.

Naked cakes (above) and chalkboard cakes (below) are providing a fresh alternative to the standard wedding cake design.
“The outside beauty of your wedding cake will be important for your pictures and your personal statement, but the inside of that cake is what you will be serving to your guests. You want a cake that is flavoursome, moist and delicious.” Be prepared to pay for the cake decorator’s time. Simple cake designs are naturally the least expensive, but for more complicated cake design you should be prepared to pay for the time it takes to produce the masterpiece. Know ahead of time what amount of money you can budget toward your cake and that will help the decorator help you choose wisely from their designs.

Jemma’s advice for when choosing your cake decorator is to be sure to look around. It is so important to check the cake decorator’s credentials and registrations. Many home based cake businesses operate in unregistered food premises, with some operating without food safety certificates as well. You don’t want your guests getting sick from unsafe

Take time for the right choice Since opening its doors just under a year ago, Rachel’s of Bairnsdale has become the go-to store for ladies seeking a quality wedding outfit or an ensemble for a special occasion. Rachel Breukel stocks quality tried and true labels suitable for Mother of the bride/groom, guests, bridesmaids, formal, cocktail and after five, with accessories to match. She loves to assist her customers in finding just the right piece for them, an outfit that fits well and looks wonderful. Her advice when buying a dress or ensemble is to always try on different styles. “Dresses often items look very different on the hanger,” Rachel said. What you may think looks sensational on the rack might not suit your shape or even colouring when you try it on. Take your time. You want to love what you’re wearing. When choosing bridesmaids dresses be aware that trends come and go. Try on all your options. “Dress your bridemaids according to their shape,” Rachel said. “If they hate their dress but wear it because you want ... it will show in the photos. “We always photograph better if we are comfortable in our outfit.” The look of weddings at the time may not
Be both stylish and comfortable with an outfit right for you from Rachel’s of Bairnsdale.
be timeless. Going for a look that’s trending at the time is fine, but be aware of the downside. “If you want to go with a trend don’t be dismayed if it doesn’t suit your body shape, or dreams for that matter.” Rachel’s advice for bride’s choosing their dresses, and those of her attendants, is to allow plenty of time. “Often dresses need to be ordered. This can take three months at a minimum.
“There are alterations that need doing and this all eats into your timeline. “Be sure to find a reputable alterations lady. Ask in store, ask around, seek help on social media.” Allow yourself plenty of time for the entire process, from choosing the right colours, styles and materials to getting the final fittings, and you’ll be sure to have a bridal party that’s comfortable and looks great be your side on your big day.
Pre-wedding nutrition Having a food and fitness plan will make sure you are ready to walk down the aisle with the healthiest bridal body ever and will alleviate unwanted stress and anxiety. Prepare: Start early. Preparation is key. You can’t expect to see miracles overnight but if you adopt an exercise regime and healthy eating plan months in advance then you will see results. Get outdoors more often. Go for a walk, be active, drink plenty of water and eat nutritious food. Fitness: Set yourself a realistic timeframe. Start your wedding exercise
plan six to nine months before your big day. Choose an outdoor activity that you love and mix it up. Go swimming, take an exercise class like Zumba, Metafit, boxing or a cycle class. Join a group sport such as netball, basketball or hockey. Upload some great tunes to get you motivated for exercise and go for a run outside or walk the dog. Nutrition: Control your portion size and get into a habit of making this a part of your daily ritual. Eat a balanced diet that includes carbohydrates, dairy, fruit and vegetables and lean proteins.

Achieve the perfect look We asked Dee, of Dee Cavanagh Makeup Artistry, what’s trending in the world of bridal makeup and styling. For the lips: “I think the not quite pink/not quite red hue of the “just bitten lip” English rose lip is the new nude for this and next year’s brides, whether it’s paired with a smokey eye or a natural face. “Kiss-proof those lips - using a stain for a lightweight goop-free, colour that holds strong through countless sips of champagne!” The lashes: “Up your lash game - the right false lashes make your eyes look bigger and more defined, especially in photographs.” Your brow: “Prefect your brow - a great brow kit will define and fill your brows with powders, gel and setting agents giving you that long lasting prefect brow all day long.” Dee advises bride’s-to-be to not try out a new facialist, spray tanner or brow wax right before the wedding. “A bad reaction or poorly styled brow is not what you want for your walk down the aisle.” Give yourself time on the day to be pampered by your hairdresser and makeup artist. Getting your makeup done can be very calming and provide that little oasis of peace you might just need before the big event. A final tip from Dee - during your day and through the night take a moment to yourselves to look around and see that those you love the most are celebrating with you both for the love you share for each other.

Mark the occasion with a song A bubbly performer for much of her young life, Christine Turra is becoming a much sort after entertainer for weddings and other special occasions. An emotive singer with a stunning voice, Christine can add something very special to a day that should be just that special.
love giving.” Having someone sing at your ceremony can make it more personal and individual with songs that mean something to you.
“I love weddings,” she said.
“Often there are a lot of changes to songs and format for the ceremony. I can deal with stressed brides – it’s all part of the job,” Christine said.
“I love seeing the glamour, the dresses, the excitement. It’s a happy day and its great to be a part of that.”
Her flexibility is something that has been much appreciated by frazzled couples.
Her goal at all times is to make the bride and groom’s day as special as possible.
“Once I had four songs to sing, then the couple couldn’t decide which ones they wanted. Eventually I sang Ave Maria while they signed the register. They were so pleased with how I sang that they paid me double the fee.
“I feel good when I can use my voice to create something extra special for the bride and groom. And I get to see their joy at marrying. “Being able to be a part of a couple’s special day is a real joy. “The ceremony is the most important, beautiful part of the day and the music used reflects on the couple. “Being able to provide that music to the couple is a gift I just
“I actually rang them to tell them they had paid me too much, but they explained that after all the messing around and how good my song sounded they wanted to pay me the extra.” Christine is happy to make a ceremony extra special, no matter the location, having tripped over to an island by boat for one occasion.
Traditions at every turn Wedding traditions are found across almost every aspect of any wedding from the engagement, to the wedding, to the honeymoon. The traditions that are associated with a wedding are often sourced from ancient superstitions, with many traditions still part of the average wedding ceremony despite the loss of superstition in many cultures. So what are some of the most common ones still being practiced today? Rings: The ring is worn on the fourth finger or index finger for several reasons including that Christian priests would count the first three fingers (including the thumb) as the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit with the fourth finger for the partner. It is bad luck for the engagement ring to be removed before the wedding day, as this will break the commitment of the ring. Wedding dress: The advent of bridesmaids comes from old pagan rituals when the bridesmaid used to distract and confuse any evil spirits that may be after the bride during the ceremony.
Hiding from evil spirits was also one of the reasons behind the veil tradition although there are several sources of the veil tradition, including evil spirits. The white dress is also used to represent the purity and virginal nature of the bride. Bridal bouquet: The bridal bouquet symbolises many things ranging from life, growth, and fertility with different flowers meaning different things for the marriage. Some popular flowers include: Acacia = Elegance Chrysanthemum (red) = I love you Chrysanthemum (white) = Truth Forget-me-not = True love and remembrance Gardenia = Joy Honeysuckle = Generosity Irises = Wisdom Lily = Majesty Orange blossom = Purity and virginity Orchids = Fertility Roses = Love Tulip = Love Violet = Faithfulness Wedding ceremony: The ceremony itself is rife with traditions
such as “giving away of the bride” and the wedding dress, but there are many small behaviours that are steeped in traditions. Such as the need for the groom to be at the church before the bride for good luck, while the bride must not walk down the aisle on time and must lead with her right foot. Flower girls and the petals they spread are used to represent the fertility of the couple and the children they will have. Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed and Something Blue: Perhaps one of the oldest and most popular wedding traditions, the four elements are used to bring different positive aspects to the marriage. Something old: Continuity and a link to the bride’s past and family. Something new: Optimism and hope for the future of the marriage and its success. Something borrowed: Happiness shared from happily married couple. Something blue: Faithfulness, loyalty and fidelity with the blue item usually being the garter belt of the bride.
