Metung ceremony for Sandra and Daniel Who: Sandra Budge and Daniel Dalton. When: February 8, 2014. Venue: Ceremony at McMillians of Metung and reception at Lakes Entrance Surf Life Saving Club. Guests: 105. Menu: Jacqui Bansen of New Leaf Bairnsdale did an amazing job. We served all the dishes banquet style. I was going for a Christmas dinner feel, where no one was thinking ‘I want what they’re having’. We had platters of meats and vegetables so guests were able to choose what they wanted and how much without having to leave their table. There is nothing worse than going hungry and as I love my food, this was really important to me. I received so many compliments on how great the food was. Entrée: Chicken and mango rice paper rolls; prawn parcels; mushrooms with blue cheese and pine nuts; barramundi with herb and parmesan crust; tarts (variety of combinations). Main: Apricot and orange marmalade glazed Lindenow ham; chicken tenderloins with a parmesan and basil pesto crust; lamb marinated in lemon juice with strawberries; root vegetables; sesame and cashew bean salad with Asian style dressing; asparagus and camembert frittata; potato salad with herbs and capers; breads. Dessert: Wedding cake (white chocolate mud cake) with raspberry and lemon swirl alternated with chocolate mud cake with cream and berries. Transport: I wasn’t too stressed about the cars so just used my Dad’s silver Jeep. Bridal party: My sister Kayla Budge and best friends Brigitte Bence (Stuckey) and Kelly Richardson (Fall). Kelly is also my hairdresser and we have walked together for years and years.

Dress: Pronovios Mullet. Bridesmaids dresses: Love Affair, coral. Flowers: I’m not quite sure of what flowers were in my bouquet. I mainly went for colours when choosing my flowers and I wanted the country feel to them. Angela at Pollen Appeal Lakes Entrance did a fantastic job and I couldn’t of been more happy with them; somehow she got exactly what I wanted with the little detail I could give her. Decorations: I used Lauren from ETC event styling and she did a great job. On entering the surf club guests walked through a curly willow and fairy lights archway. The wooden beams in the ceiling of the surf club were covered in curly willow and fairy lights, glass balls draped from the beam with either flameless candles or little succulents and paper lanterns. Dad made the table holders out of willow and I made my grandmother’s relish for the bombonieres. These were also the place settings. I went with long tables to go with my platter-style menu. The best part: I really enjoyed the photo shoot with Alice Campbell. We went out to Lake Tyers with the bridal party and I finally felt like I could relax, have a drink and some food, and have a laugh and enjoy the moment. Best advice: Make sure you take the time to spend with your new husband on the day. You may be surprised; it can be more difficult than you think. Make a budget and stick to it.

Lauren and Luke enjoyed every moment Who: Lauren Saliba (26) and Luke Irish (28), of Lindenow. Been together for 11 years. When: April 26, 2014. Venue: Ceremony and reception in an old machinery shed at Luke’s family farm in Hillside, just out of Bairnsdale. Guests: 130. Menu: Antipasto platters, canapé / cocktail style food. Transport: Chrysler, SSv Commodore, SV6 Commodore. Bridal party: Renee Barnes (maid of honour) and bridesmaids Hayley Irish, Shanelle Barton and Lauren Blair. Casey Stewart (best man) and groomsmen Tim Irish, Danny Irish and Luke Dyer. Dress: White on White purchased from Miss Gowns Berwick. Ivory strapless beaded and lace bodice with long flowing detailed train. Bridesmaids dresses: Natasha Millani Sydney, purchased online - a big risk but paid off, they were beautiful. Flowers: Pollen and Patina posies of mixed pastel roses, dahlias mixed in with silver foliage. The bridesmaids’

bouquets were a smaller version of bride’s. Decorations: Most of the decorations and props were borrowed from Luke’s father’s shed. Marg and Helen did the fairy lights and backdrop, but the remaining were old boxes and crates. Pollen and Patina supplied trestles and a few boxes. Jars and flowers set the scene. Luke hand-built the bar to set off the rustic theme, and also featured a family friend’s vintage Triumph motorbike. The best part: Marrying my best friend. What would you do differently? Not one thing! Best advice: Be as best prepared as you can early. Book in the main things early to avoid disappointment, write ideas and keep notes as you go. Enjoy every moment, rain, hail or shine as it goes so quickly. Also make sure you take the time to step back and watch the night from afar to see what a beautiful memory you have created.

That first kiss a highlight Who: Courtney Martin (25) and Daniel Evans (25), of Eastwood. When: Janurary 25, 2014, (five-year anniversary). Venue: Lakes Entrance Golf Club. Guests: 120. Menu: Finger food we had at around 4.30-5pm before the bridal party arrived back, which my family, friends and I made. The main meal was a buffet roast from the Maffra Spit Roast. Roast lamb, beef and pork, potato, pumpkin, cauliflower in cheese sauce etc. Transport: We didn’t really need to worry about cars as I walked down the stairs at the back of the golf club, no one saw me arrive in the car. But we used Ken Westfield’s bright yellow car for myself Dad and Daniel, and my Dad’s Ford Territory and a Toyota Kluger for transport for photos. Bridal party: Bridesmaids were Allyse Jeanes, Kaitlyn Mathers and Sally Duguid and groomsmen were James Murphy, Travis Masterson and Adam Evans Dress: My dress was from Raffaele Ciuca in Armadale, it was a two-layer dress, an ivory silk boned strapless slip with a lace button up high neck overlay. It came with a small beaded belt, but I felt it needed something much bigger so I brought a bigger and bolder belt from Etsy online as I couldn’t find anything I was after in any bridal or jewellery shop. Bridesmaids dresses: The girls’ dresses came from Vivid in Chadstone and they were the very first dress the girls tried on. They were a maxi high neck light beige / pink colour, with a flowery / sequined pattern on the bodice and back, with a flowery bottom half. Flowers: As we had a vintage theme wedding I wanted something to match, but still look great. Merrin Backman did our flowers and a fantastic job. My bouquet was natural stems, round in shape and consisted of mixed cream roses and other flowers to suit. I also had silver and crystal diamante beads to match included; it had a silver dusty miller foliage around it and bound with hessian and lace. The bridesmaids’ bouquets were very similar, smaller in size and used more colourful flowers to match their dresses with bronze colours, diamantes / beads, and also bound in hessian and lace. I wanted the bridesmaids to have that splash of colour as the dresses were quiet neutral. The flowers looked great and matched the dresses perfectly. Decorations: Our theme was vintage so Mum and I were out hunting for props and decorations for months. We picked up lots of suitcases, wooden crates and old books from all over the place. We also made quite a lot of our decorations ourselves. We sat for hours making doily buntings for the roof decorations. We also used Bairnsdale Party Hire for the lighting on the roof. Mum also sat for hours folding individual pages for books for the centrepieces and decorations throughout the room. We had a pretty large lolly buffet with all our favourite lollies and my Nan and

I also made a large quantity of little jams to add onto the lolly buffet as an extra bomboniere. The lolly buffet was a huge success, I couldn’t believe there was an actual line to get some! We had a photo booth as well with lots of props, which was also a huge hit; I don’t think it was ever empty. And the photos are hilarious looking through them, definitely worth having. Tegan Woodcock did all out stationary / invites and little signs around the room. We sat and assembled the invites ourselves. The best part: It’s really quiet hard to pick a favourite part of the day, as I loved every bit, from getting ready with the girls, to the butterflies you got just as everyone sees you, walking down the isle (a complete blur now), the vows, becoming Mrs Evans, the photos, the dancing afterwards. It’s all such a wonderful day and each part has its own memories and excitement, but I guess the part that overtakes all is the first kiss! What would you do differently? Not worry as much about the little things (decorations, the signs around the place etc); guests rarely notice them in the big picture. Spend a little more and get a photographer that also does videoing. After all you only have your photos as memories of the day. My biggest regret is not getting a video of the day done. Best advice: Be organised. I’m a very organised person and I think it pays off, nothing to stress or worry about in the last few weeks. Everything was pretty much done (except my cake as I made it) with a couple weeks to go. Do it yourself if you can, it may take a little bit of time, but worth it in the end knowing you did it yourself, and can save a bit of money. Relax, relax, relax! There is no point stressing. If you haven’t got it done in the last week don’t worry about it. - it’s probably not needed anyway. If you stress the quicker the day will go, and you want to enjoy it as much as you can! Relax, take it in and just have fun.

Priceless memories with family and friends Who: Olivia Andrews (27) and Brad Hannah (28), of Moorabbin. When: November 23, 2013. Venue: Ceremony at St Mary’s Church Bairnsdale and reception at Bellevue in Lakes Entrance. Guests: 110. Menu: We had a sit down dinner with a mixture of canapes for entrée including spinach and feta parcels, spring rolls and arancini. For the main meal we had an alternate drop of lamb back strap with pea puree, roast potatoes and lamb Jus, chicken breast stuffed with semidried tomatoes, feta and basil, and a vegetarian option of a crispy red lentil cake. For dessert our guests helped themselves to a dessert buffet that included macaroons, cupcakes, personalised chocolates and a cake pop tower wedding cake. Transport: The bride and bridesmaid arrived at the church in a 1970 black Mini Cooper S, white 1972 Torana and a white 1966 American Ford Thunderbird. After the ceremony we hired a mini bus so all the bridal party could be in one car and travel to the reception together. Bridal party: Bridesmaids were Kirbie Banks, Simone Andrews, Elisha Froud and Trish Andrews. Best man was Andrew South and groomsmen Chris Rhodes, Elliott Yeates and Dale Muirson. Page boys were Jordan Andrews-Hei and Hudson Froud. Dress: An ivory bridal gown with lace peplum bodice, satin ribbon belt and a sweep train from Eternal Bridal designed by Tara Keely. Bridesmaids’ dresses were from Swish. The make-up was by Make-up and Beauty by Jess and the hair by Studio 29. Flowers: From Van Berkel Flowers Bairnsdale. Bride: Natural stem bouquet of apricot and cream roses, pink lissianthus, pink sweet peas, blue gum, silver suede and brunia. Bridesmaids: Bouquets of baby breath. Decorations: Bairnsdale Party Hire and DIY. The band for the reception was Mr and Mrs Jones The best part: Having all your friends and family in one room. What would you do differently? Make more of an effort to visit all the tables during the reception; some guests I didn’t get to speak to at all. Best advice: Make a Pinterest page. It makes planning the wedding fun and guests love personal touches to the wedding. Hire a videographer (we used Lens Flair), pictures are great but having the speeches forever recorded is priceless. Get a friend or relative to take some photos of your guests during pre-dinner drinks. This is something a professional photographer doesn’t do. 12 EAST GIPPSLAND WEDDING GUIDE & PLANNER | www.eastgippslandweddingexpo.com.au

It’s your day to dress up

CASEY JAYDE PHOTOGRAPHY

Choose the best wedding gown for you with lots of fun by trying on different styles, materials and colours. In other words, play dress ups. Most brides have a fairly clear picture in their mind of what they would like their wedding dress to look like, but even then what we picture as looking gorgeous on may not actually fit the picture. It is essential that you take the time to try on a number dresses before deciding on the final gown. Don’t worry about colours and embellishments when initially playing with different styles and fabrics. What you need to look at first up is the feel and look, so that you can be comfortable on the day and that the cut falls flatteringly for your figure. You’ll develop a taste of what you want in your own gown, and may even fall in love with a gown that is far from your initial dream dress. Once you’ve decided on the style and fabric you can then investigate the options available to you for embellishments and the best colour to suit your skin tone. While wedding dresses can be any colour, they are usually white or ivory, with ivory being the most popular by far. White can be difficult to wear in such vast amounts, whereas ivory is softer and allows guests to see the bride wearing the dress, rather than seeing the dress first and the bride second. On your dress-up day it’s a good idea to bring along a friend or two. Boutique attendants are skilled with assisting in choosing the most flattering style for a bride-to-be, but a friend can help

18 EAST GIPPSLAND WEDDING GUIDE & PLANNER | www.eastgippslandweddingexpo.com.au

in matching your personality with the dress ensuring it truly does suit the wearer. Don’t be afraid to have a long train if that is what you want. A train can look impressive heading down the aisle, and can be designed to fold into a bustle for more freedom at the reception. When choosing bridesmaid dresses, a bride usually has a strong feel for the colour she would like the dresses to be. To ensure bridesmaids’ dresses match each other it is important to order them at the same time to avoid inconsistencies in colours due to different batch lots. For attendees with differing body shapes dresses should be styled to suit the individual and all by the same designer. Wedding gowns can be purchased off-the-rack and adjusted, but should you decide to have one made you will need to be aware of the time it takes to create a wedding dress. Realistically a dress can take around six months to create, so eight months should be allowed to allow for any alterations. Even with the most accurate of initial measurements it is wise to order your dress a size or two larger. Adjustments are much simpler if the dress is to be made smaller, rather than trying to make a dress bigger, perhaps even needing to add more material. As with all aspects of the wedding it is important to work within your budget when deciding on a dress. You need to feel magical, beautiful and on top of the world in your dress so you will radiate confidence on your big day.

The Rojae way Looking great on her wedding day is right near the top of the list of necessities for any bride-to-be, and hair is certainly a big part of that. Gail Ogilve has been in the hairdressing industry for 40 years, the last eight of those as owner manager of Rojae Hairdressing in Bairnsdale. She has seen many changes over the years that have lead to her understanding that the wellbeing of both staff and clients is of utmost importance. This appreciation has lead to Rojae being environmentally friendly wherever possible. A bride needs to be happy about not just her hairstyle, but how good the process makes her feel, and knowing her style has minimal impact on the environment can be very important. “We are a salon that is environmentally friendly, with environmentally aware products such as EVO,” Gail said. “The EVO hair products are made from all natural environmentally friendly ingredients, and packaging that is 100 per cent recyclable.” Natural ingredients are used and continuous research and development means that products are reformulated and synthetics substituted with naturals when an equivalent is available. EVO is not tested on animals. As a prestige partner of Hair Care Australia, Rojae stocks a complete range of quality products for retail and use within the salon. As part of being an environmentally friendly salon, the foils used within the store are recycled using Refoil, made from 100 per cent recyclable foil. As an indication of how important this is, imagine the 1.5 million used foil and empty colour tubes that end up in landfill every year from salons that don’t recycle. That’s equivalent to seven jumbo jets, or 1000 cars. “Foil takes 500 years to disintegrate. We need to start thinking of a sustainable future,” Gail said. Knowing that you and your hair are being cared for naturally is a great start, but of course you want to know it will look good, too, for your big day. Training of the friendly staff at Rojae is ongoing, so you can be assured that they have the latest styles and techniques in hand. It’s a good idea to do some research before you head to the hairdresser. Find what you like in magazines and online and look at different styles. What looks great on someone else may not look good on you, but your research will give your stylist a good idea of what you like. A few months before the wedding day, discuss your wishes with one of the Rojae stylists and follow that up with a trial appointment to have a play to see what works for you. Generally, severe looks are out, with brides today seeking a softer, more natural look with elegant waves and a romantic air. It’s important that the relationship between the bride and her stylist is a good one. There needs to be a nice feel between them, as they’ll need to work together for the best result and most enjoyable time.

CS PHOTOGRAPHY

The staff at Rojae strive for a relaxed and inviting environment, where a bride and her party can relax and enjoy a glass of bubbly or a herbal tea as the stylists work their magic.

For flowers that shine Flowers. They’re bright and beautiful and are not only the perfect bridal accessory, they are a stunning way to let your personality really shine through.

and style, it is essential to make an appointment. “We have the latest bridal bouquet magazines available for brides to be to browse for ideas,” Michelle said.

Michelle Lancaster, owner operator of Van Berkel Flowers and Gifts for eight years, knows her flowers and how to make the perfect arrangements for your big day. So does her team, with three permanent and five casual members with many years of experience ready to offer their expertise and advice. Michelle said weddings were a particularly rewarding event for the Van Berkel team. It allows them to show their creative, artistic sides. “It’s great to be able to play a role in someone’s big day and flowers are so important because they’re like the final touch that pulls everything together,” Michelle said. Somewhat a surprise to Michelle is the return of gyp, with traditional bouquets and those with a ‘garden picked’ look in vogue for a less formal look. “Popular flowers at the moment include

Lilies are not on the list of in-fashion wedding flowers this year. Van Berkel Flowers and Gifts work closely with Etc. Head to the appointment alone or with your closest friend to bounce ideas off; someone who really knows you and can give you ideas without making the process overwhelming. “It’s always best to choose blooms that are in season,” Michelle said. “Imported products are not always good in quality. All of our arrangements use fresh Australian grown flowers of the highest quality. “We order more than is needed for an arrangement to ensure that only the best blooms are used, avoiding those that have been damaged in transport from the flower markets,” she said. Each flower is individually picked and cared for right through to delivery. You can’t ask for more than that.

Vintage, contemporary and classic One of the most interesting trends in wedding floristry this year is the vintage look. Florist Rachael Morgan from Lime Lily in Bailey Street said the space to be creative with this look is endless. “However, I’m not locked into one trend or another. I will take my lead from the customer,” she said. “I prefer the bride make an appointment with me to discuss what she wants and needs. The client is most welcome to bring in any images of designs she likes; pictures and drawings of bouquets and centrepieces and samples of the fabric of the dress and bridesmaids dresses. “This way she orders the arrangements to suit the styling she has in mind. And when we have sorted out the details I will prepare a quote and we can go ahead with the work. “At the moment, the trend in colours are

Personalised wine labels The bride and groom on their wedding day aim to create a service and reception with extra special touches that make the day their own.

“The clients need to supply a high resolution image if they want a picture on the label or just words. “There is no limit to the size of the order or the variety of different wines to mix and match to make it up.”

Tasters Wine and Foods Bairnsdale offer a service to supply wine and personalise the bottles with the couples’ own uniquely designed labels.

“We can be contacted in person or through the website.”

“We have a selection of 40 different Australian cleanskin wines to choose from and we will do anything the customer wants to label the wines especially for their wedding,” Kris said.

Personalised bottles of wine look superb on the tables for guests and they can also be designed as special thank you gifts for the bridal party.

“It is best to contact us at least one month before the wedding, principally to be sure we have the wine they want.

This is the Hunters’ first year in business in Service Street, the store is looking lovely and bright with an increasing selection of local produce.

“Also when doing the labels we need to have time to get the images, drawing or words and the design just as the couple want it, which involves some

emailing to and fro until they are happy with it.

“This business is our first time in retail, it is an entirely new experience for us but we are enjoying the challenge,” Simon said.

A celebrant for a celebration Choosing to exchange vows with the help of a civil marriage celebrant is becoming increasingly popular for a day that will be treasured forever and a ceremony that should be uniquely their own. Civil marriage celebrant Sheena St John offers couples the flexibility and freedom required in creating the perfect ceremony of their choice.

ceremony and the couple, walking away feeling moved and uplifted. “I also encourage my couples to have a go at writing their own vows. You are only limited to your imagination and some have been quite quirky. A wedding ceremony is, after all, a wonderful public display of the couples feelings, commitment and intentions towards each other.

“I believe my couples deserve a professional ceremony and it is my firm belief that anything spoken should not only be heard by all the guests, but also presented sincerely and be meaningful to the couple,” Sheena said.

“A truly fantastic ceremony will be a memorable and enjoyable occasion for all and as a marriage celebrant it is a great honour to be a part of a couple’s special day.”

“These days, anything goes. The ceremony can be as formal or informal and as long or short as the couple likes. It can involve parents, children, special friends and even pets.”

Writing wedding vows can be a daunting task, but making your vows unique and from the heart is the best way to add that personal touch to your special day.

A wedding ceremony should be one that reflects not only the couple’s love and commitment, but also their dreams and personalities - their story so far. “Which is why I encourage my couples to share a funny story about how they met or about the proposal. It makes guests feel enlightened and connected to the

WRITING WEDDING VOWS

What are their strengths and weaknesses? Why will they make the ideal partner for you? When did you know that you were in love/ know that this person was the one you wanted to marry? What does marriage mean to you? Why do you want to be a married person? What is your most favorite memory of your partner? What are their funny, quirky habits that you love about them? You’ll find that once you’ve answered these basic questions that the rest will just flow naturally. If you still think you don’t have enough material consult the experts, ask your friends, recite your favourite poem.

Sit down in a quiet space with paper and pen and answer these questions.

Try reading what you've written out loud to a trusted friend or family member.

Even if you don't think the answer will end up in your wedding vows, still take the time to write it down. It may help you in the long run. If you encounter writer's block, first try taking a short break.

Ideally, this person will be someone who is a good writer, and someone who knows your relationship. Once you've worked out a final version, practice reading it on your own, several times to make sure you are comfortable with it.

What is the single greatest thing about the person you are going to marry?

Altar your plans, include Lindenow For a delightful stay in the country, in a quaint, historic building surrounded by beautiful countryside, head to Lindenow, and the town’s newest bed and breakfast.

The bride and groom can enjoy the venue’s privacy and intimacy on their wedding night, or the bridal party might indulge in a wedding-eve stay over.

When the church next door to Robyn and David Dunkley’s Lindenow property came up for sale in late 2012 the couple decided to buy it. They didn’t really know why, or what they were going to do with it, but the end result is a luxurious bed and breakfast with a truly historic ambience, aptly named “Altar Ego”.

Guests who have stayed at Altar Ego have provided nothing but praise for the experience.

Following its sale the St Martin’s Anglican Church building was formally deconsecrated on January 20, 2013, with Anglican services continuing from the Uniting church opposite. Originally built in Walpa in 1898, the St Martin’s Church was moved to the Lindenow township in 1953. The 116-year old building was named after pioneering pastor Robert Martin, who served a scattered congregation for many years until he retired, at age 85, in 1918.

The perfect place to relax before your big day, or to unwind at its conclusion.

The decision by Robyn and David to transform the building into a bed and breakfast was deemed an obvious choice. Now in their safe and loving hands the building has been lovingly restored and tastefully revamped, melding into a comfortable and luxurious retreat for couples, families, and business people with one or two bedroom options available. As wedding accommodation, Altar Ego is simply ideal.

One bride who stayed with her bridesmaids the night before her wedding commented, “What a beautiful place to stay for my wedding, 10 out of 10!” The Queen Room boasts a private deck, pew, table and chairs, and a well appointed joined bathroom with walk-in shower. The Studio Suite has a luxurious king bed, a bathroom with a double spa, a chandelier, and a cosy wood heater for cooler nights. With flexible check in and check out times, and chocolates and champagne as a special touch, make Altar Ego Bed and Breakfast in Lindenow a part of your special time.

Time to really relax and unwind So you’re preparing to tie the knot with the person you want to spend the rest of your life with. It’s a big day and one that certainly needs to be celebrated in style. And once it’s all over you will definitely deserve a holiday to a place of your dreams. But with the cost involved in planning your perfect wedding day a honeymoon is often an unattainable dream. That’s where Coopers Travel in Bairnsdale can help. They can make life a little easier for you by giving you the opportunity to establish a “honeymoon register” and have the honeymoon you’ve always dreamed of. By establishing a honeymoon register, the friendly staff at Coopers Travel can plan your very special honeymoon, leaving you with more time for all those other preparations for the big day. It’s very easy to get a registry started. Simply advise Coopers Travel of your wedding date, honeymoon dates (once your decision is made) and your desired destination. They can even help you with that decision, too. Once your honeymoon registry is up and running guests can make contributions to the holiday of your dreams. Cards can be arranged to send out with your invitations. Guests can contribute any amount they wish, all funds helping you to get to where you both want to be. To book your honeymoon, an experienced Coopers Travel consultant will be appointed to assist and to ensure

Establishing a honeymoon register with Coopers Travel can mean the difference between a simple holiday and the trip of a lifetime.

that you receive all the necessary information and assistance in planning a honeymoon to suit your individual needs. Honeymoons can be taken immediately after the wedding, however postponing until a later date is becoming common practice, many couples wishing to save for a holiday that is simply out of their reach after big wedding celebrations. Coopers Travel will hold funds by arrangement until you choose to make your future travel plans. You may continue to make personal contributions

to this register at any given time. If you have excess monies remaining when you do finally plan your trip you can choose to spend the excess on room upgrades, foreign cash or cash passports, day tours or cruises. Or perhaps you may like to plan your next escape; a first anniversary celebration perhaps? Your guests will be assured that their contribution towards your chosen honeymoon will ensure that you have lasting memories of a very special holiday together.

Pre-wedding nutrition Having a food and fitness plan will make sure you are ready to walk down the aisle with the healthiest bridal body ever and will alleviate unwanted stress and anxiety. Prepare: Start early. Preparation is key. You can’t expect to see miracles overnight but if you adopt an exercise regime and healthy eating plan months in advance then you will see results. Get outdoors more often. Go for a walk, be active, drink plenty of water and eat nutritious food. Fitness: Set yourself a realistic timeframe. Start your wedding exercise

plan six to nine months before your big day. Choose an outdoor activity that you love and mix it up. Go swimming, take an exercise class like Zumba, boxing or a cycle class. Join a group sport such as netball, basketball or hockey. Upload some great tunes to get you motivated for exercise and go for a run outside or walk the dog. Nutrition: Control your portion size and get into a habit of making this a part of your daily ritual. Eat a balanced diet that includes carbohydrates, dairy, fruit and vegetables and lean proteins.

Gift registry makes sense Creating a gift registry can assist not only your guests, knowing that they are providing you with something that you truly want, but also yourselves, knowing that what is in the beautifully wrapped box is not something that you need to tuck away out of sight and then remember to bring it out to display before the gift giver comes to visit. But a gift registry doesn’t have to be all about crockery, towels and toasters. You may already have a home and are looking to make some home improvements or a complete renovation. Perhaps you’ve built a new home and would like to finish it off really nicely and need a little financial assistance. This is where a gift registry at Dahlsens Mitre 10 in Bairnsdale can make life easier for you and your guests. From plants and garden ornaments to building supplies and fittings, Dahlsens Mitre 10 has it all.

Passion for perfect taste A chef for than 10 years, Jay Hoffman turned her hand to catering last year, and is enjoying every minute of it.

“I love desserts particularly, and doing the fancy work, putting my own creative twist on the food,” she says.

A creator of stunning cakes for weddings, engagements, birthdays and christenings, her business, Jay’s Delicious Sensations, is so much more than cakes alone.

A stickler for perfection, Jay takes great care and pride in not just how her food tastes, but also how it looks.

Catering is Jay’s passion. She can help any couple to prepare a menu for their wedding day that is as individual as they are. Taking the time to create the perfect food indulgence, the bride and groom’s individual tastes, expectations and budget are carefully considered, the result being a menu that reflects their personalities. An intimate cocktail party for a few or many; a sit-down meal for up to 200 guests; a buffet of culinary delights: Jay can do it all. She considers herself an “all-rounder”, proficient in endless dishes, her menus tempting the taste buds.

“It’s really important that food looks good. If a dish doesn’t look nice, our minds think it generally won’t taste nice. “It’s important that the dishes I present are fresh, colourful, vibrant and taste awesome,” she said. In deciding the style of meal and which caterer to use, Jay suggests starting the process 10 to 12 months before the big day. “It’s a good idea to taste their food and see how what they do looks,” she said. “Caterers can be booked well in advance, so it’s also a good idea to do it early to ensure you get the caterer you want.”

Jay Hoffman ensures that every dish provided by Jay’s Delicious Sensations is just perfect.

Traditions and superstitions Wedding traditions are found across almost every aspect of any wedding from the engagement, to the wedding, to the honeymoon. The traditions that are associated with a wedding are often sourced from ancient superstitions, with many traditions still part of the average wedding ceremony despite the loss of superstition in many cultures. So what are some of the most common ones still being practiced today? Rings: The ring is worn on the fourth finger or index finger for several reasons including that Christian priests would count the first three fingers (including the thumb ) as the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit with the fourth finger for the partner. It is bad luck for the engagement ring to be removed before the wedding day as this will break the commitment of the ring. Wedding dress: The advent of bridesmaids comes from old pagan rituals when the bridesmaid used to distract and confuse any evil spirits that may be after the bride during the ceremony. Hiding from evil spirits was also one of the reasons behind the veil tradition although there are several sources of the veil tradition, including evil spirits. The white dress is also used to represent the purity and virginal nature of the bride. Bridal bouquet: The bridal bouquet symbolises many things ranging from life, growth, and fertility with different flowers meaning different things for the marriage. Some popular flowers include: Acacia = Elegance Chrysanthemum (red) = I love

you Chrysanthemum (white) = Truth Forget-me-not = True love and remembrance Gardenia = Joy Honeysuckle = Generosity Irises = Wisdom Lily = Majesty Orange blossom = Purity and virginity Orchids = Fertility Roses = Love Tulip = Love Violet = Faithfulness Wedding ceremony: The ceremony itself is rife with traditions such as "giving away of the bride" and wedding dress but there are many small behaviours that are steeped in traditions. Such as the need for the groom to be at the church before the bride for good luck, while the bride must not walk down the aisle on time and must lead with her right foot. Flower girls and the petals they spread are used to represent the fertility of the couple and the children they will have. Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed and Something Blue:

Perhaps one of the oldest and most popular wedding traditions, the four elements are used to bring different positive aspects to the marriage. Something old: Continuity and a link to the bride's past and family. Something new: Optimism and hope for the future of the marriage and its success. Something borrowed: Happiness shared from happily married couple. Something blue: Faithfulness, loyalty and fidelity with the blue item usually being the garter belt of the bride.

Stylish period elegance, with a modern touch, awaits in The Riversleigh rooms.

Pick a style that suits Finding the perfect wedding dress can be a daunting experience but one of the most important things to work out is what style will best suit your body shape. Do plenty of research and try on as many dresses as you can. You can use styles you have spotted in magzines for inspiration but remember, what looks good on a model might not work for you! Whether you are going to buy a dress off the rack or have one made, always get advice from experienced staff at bridal boutiques or seamstresses - and always take along a friend or family member whose opinion you value and trust. Comfort is also a key consideration. Yes, you want to look beautiful but this is also a dress you will wear all day and most of the night; you want to be able to walk and sit elegantly and even dance. The following are some basic rules to observe when choosing dress styles that will suit and compliment your figure. If you’re pear-shaped: This is a common body shape where the hips are wider than the shoulders and the waist is usually quite well defined. Strapless, Vneck or scooped necklines, possibly in off shoulder styles, are suitable. A-line is the best shape, but avoid a full skirt, while diagonal draping on the bodice is very flattering. Avoid: Halter-necks or high cut necks that make hips look bigger. Bias or straight cut dresses also emphasis hips, as do full, gathered or pleated skirts. If you’re rectangle-shaped: The hips and shoulders are about the same width, and there is not

much definition at the waist. Go for a waistline with a V-shape to create the illusion of a smaller waist. Structured and corseted bodices with fairly full skirts also achieve this effect. Keep necklines wide and use detailing either above or below the waist, not both. Avoid: Halter necks or high necks that make the shoulders look narrow and as a result do not flatter the waist. Straight-cut dresses can make you look boxy. If you’re triangle-shaped: This is an inverted triangle, with the shoulders wider than the hips. Bias-cut or straight cut dresses work and this shape can easily take very full ball gown styles. Halter-necks or higher cut necks balance shoulders and hips and flatter a smaller chest. Bustles or bows add shape. Avoid: Very low-cut necklines or full or very fancy sleeves and wider necklines. If you’re hourglass-shaped: Hips and shoulders are the same width and there is a well-defined waist. Strapless, V-neck or scooped necklines work best. Off-theshoulder and A-line styles also work and use ruching or draping to disguise bumpy bits. Avoid: Bias-cut or straight dresses don’t suit the typical curves of the hourglass. Gathered or pleated skirts can make your hips look big, so be careful.

Someone important to lend a hand A very close friend, brother or sister, the roles of maid/matron of honour and best man are ones that come with responsibility. The matron of honour becomes the bride’s confidante during the months leading up to the wedding day and on the big day itself. The maid of honour has one of the most important roles in making sure the bride and groom's wedding is a success. Pre-wedding day: * Helping the bride in the months leading up to the wedding day with choosing her wedding gown, stationery, church, reception venue, and generally any assistance she needs in organising everything. * Make sure the bridesmaids and flower girls get to their

dress fittings. * Organise any pre-wedding celebrations, with the assistance of the bridesmaids, including the bridal shower and the hen's night. The big day: * The maid of honour is to be by the bride's side to help her deal with all the anxiety and stress she may be feeling. * Helping the bride get dressed, taking care of the hair and make-up people, as well as photographers and any other bridal party members. * Making sure the bridesmaids and flower girls know their roles. * Keeping an eye on the bride's veil as she enters the church and adjust it accordingly. * Taking care of the bride's

bouquet and the groom's ring during the ceremony. BEST MAN SPEECH If you've been selected as the best man for a wedding, chances are you've wondered how to write and deliver a best man speech that will be remembered. Make it personal: You were chosen as the best man by the groom because of your unique personality. Therefore it is important that your best man speech reflects who you really are. The groom is counting on you to be yourself - don't let him down. With this in mind, begin to write a best man speech by playing to your strengths. If you're not naturally a comedian, don't worry. You don't have to make the audience roll in the aisles

laughing. Best man speeches can be hilariously funny or they can be heartfelt and sincere. Keep it brief: There is nothing worse than best man speeches that go on too long. When writing your speech, remember to practice it with a watch to check its length. Keep your best man speech short and sweet and you'll be fine. Introduce yourself: One common mistake in best man speeches is that the best man neglects to introduce himself, or explain how he knows the bride and groom. Remember that weddings are full of distant relatives and casual acquaintances; many people there will not have the faintest idea who you are.

A unique on-water venue; stunning scenery on the Gippsland Lakes; sunset cruises with bubbly and canapés through to intimate sit down dinners with a chef on-board, function facilities; full catering and licensed bar available for up to 40 people. Let us tailor an experience just for you.

The original 130 year-old homestead and secluded country cottages are set amongst pristine panoramic views with extensive manicured gardens, orchards and a trufferie. We will personally create a magical setting entirely for you with an exquisitely presented “paddock to plate” dining experience. We offer a fresh and youthful perspective on bespoke country weddings, paired with the natural beauty of the rolling landscape.

How to calm the pre-wedding jitters The night before or the morning of a wedding is one of the most stressful times in one’s life. Whether you are a bride, bridesmaid, mother of the bride or a close friend, pre-wedding nerves are bound to rear their ugly head. You may begin sweating or your heart may palpitate. Learn how to calm those prewedding nerves and enjoy the big day.

1. Do something other than preparing for the wedding itself and take your mind off it. Get your hair done. Get a manicure. Go for a walk. Expend some energy with a physical activity that will clear your mind and body. 2. Drink plenty of water. Keep a bottle nearby. The more fluids you drink, the more hydrated your body will be. This will allow you to breathe

easily and think clearly. 3. Play some relaxing music while you get dressed. 4. Inhale aromatherapy scents or burn some scented candles. Lavender is a great scent that is proven to relax and calm your nerves. Escape into an aromatherapy bath or head to the spa for a treatment involving these stress-removers. 5. Make a list about all the

things you love about your fiancé. 6. Spend time with friends and family members who make you laugh. Go out for a few wines (don’t over do it) and share stories. Get your mind off the nerves and jitters. 7. Be sure to eat well. Many brides go on crash diets that leave them feeling weak and depleated. Rest, relax and enjoy.
