Membership drive in full swing By Bob Riha, Jr. PPAGLA President
W
Gerard Burkhart
Past President’s gathered for a group photo at the Queen Mary in Long Beach.
Membership Chair Rick Meyer are offering a special offer for new members to join PPAGLA. For new members only, the Board of Directors has agreed to extend your membership for 1.5 years — until December 2012 if your application arrives at PPAGLA Offices by Aug. 1 with payment for only one year. In addition, PPAGLA will also waive the Membership Application Fee for new members. In recent years, membership numbers have been on a decline due to our national recession and reduction in our nation’s newsrooms and freelance clients coast-to-coast. Whether it’s capturing a millisecond in time within a still photo or telling a story through moving images and sound, our membership is based on professional photojournalists — still and video. This Association will be around a long time after you or I will be dead. We all must do our part now to support the Association and help build towards the Association’s future and all its members.
Your current Board of Directors and I are just caretakers in an Association founded a long time ago — just as photojournalists have done for decades before us. PPAGLA was born in the middle of the Great Depression and before World War II. Our members have seen and photographed history as it unfolded for more than 75 years. History and PPAGLA members will be around for a long time with members documenting daily life and events in Los Angeles to anywhere in the world. Last year, I made a simple request to each of you to recruit one new student, professional or associate member to apply and join PPAGLA. I am asking each of you to once again invite those journalism students, professional journalists and individuals that may qualify, to join our Association. It’s as simple as that and takes about one minute of your time. Our bylaws and qualifications to join PPAGLA are all online at www.ppagla.org. There are many photogra-
phers and videographers that work in the Los Angeles area and surrounding communities (within 100 miles of LA City Hall) that should be a member of PPAGLA, but for whatever reason they aren’t. This includes staff photographers and videographers for L.A.-based newspapers, television stations and freelance photojournalists and videographers that contribute on a regular basis to media organizations and publications. There are many great photographers and videographers ‘out there’ that would be a great addition to our membership and Association as a whole, maybe someone just needs to ask them — and that person to ask them is you! Sincerely,
Bob Riha, Jr.

ith summer now upon us, I’d like to share an update on several PPAGLA projects your Board of Directors has been involved with these past several months and what’s coming down the road! On March 19, almost 200 PPAGLA members and guests gathered at the Queen Mary in Long Beach to celebrate our 75th Anniversary and 2010 Annual Awards Dinner. For those of you that were not able to attend the Awards Dinner, the consensus is that you missed a fun-filled evening! Our guests included many longtime PPAGLA members including Stan Troutman and Garry Watson, former LAPD and now Long Beach Police Chief Jim McDonnell, and Los Angeles City Councilman Tom LaBonge, who was presented with an Honorary PPAGLA Membership. KNBC’s reporter John Cadiz Klemack shared ‘Master of Ceremony’ duties with our Chairman of the Board, John McCoy. The PPAGLA 75th Anniversary Historical Photo Exhibit onboard the Queen Mary has been extended beyond its original May 31 closing date. New management at the Queen Mary offered to continue the photo exhibit onboard in the Sun Deck Gallery through the summer months — which is great! Guests visiting the Exhibit have come from all over the world with favorable comments written in our guest book. Your Board of Directors is also looking for additional locations that would be interested in exhibiting the photos and video clips after the Queen Mary exhibit ends. If you know of a location or museum that would be willing to display our 75th Anniversary Photo Exhibit, please let me or a Board Members know! The Board of Directors and

Student Letters To the Past Presidents and Retired Members Scholarship Fund, I wanted to write to thank you for your generous support in sponsoring the student scholarship. It was an honor to win and be recognized by so many people in the industry and the scholarship money has greatly supported me through school. I would also like to thank Sara Moosburger and the folks at Nikon for their generous donation of a camera. You can be assured that it has already been put to good use. Being a member of PPAGLA has pushed me to develop my skills and eye towards photojournalism through seeing the great work of others and their successes.
Winners Myung Chun, Terry Pierson and Christina House with their awards.
I am very honored to receive the student scholarship and look forward to what this coming year will bring. Thank you, Khai Le Dear Past Presidents and Retired Members Scholarship Fund,

I am proud to receive a scholarship, as it has quickly assisted me in the purchase of another lens for my repertoire. I have been hired since this award to shoot environmental portraits for the biggest issue of Pasadena Magazine’s Top Doctor’s issue — already this new lens is hard at work!! I hope one day to be giving this award and many others like it to students of photography and photojournalism. Thank you ALL for your inspiration, recognition and the opportunity for my dreams to become a reality. All the best and thank you again, Monique Michaels, Santa Monica College

The PPAGLA Scholarship Fund still needs $600. Our goal is to raise $1,500. Every year we give $1,000 to the Student Photojournalist of the Year and $500 to the runner-up. The Past Presidents and Retired Members Scholarship Fund are co-sponsored by Sara Moosbruger, NIKON NPS and PPAGLA Past Presidents, Retired and Professional members. In the past years, the Scholarship Fund has raised and donated more than $29,500 to dedicated Photojournalism students. Past Presidents Joanne Matos, Bonnie Burrow and Rick Meyer do the fundraising. All the money goes to the winner and runner-up of the College Photojournalist of the Year competition. As of press time, the following members have made generous contributions to the 2011 campaign: Bonnie Burrow, Rick Meyer, Jim Harris, Ringo Chiu, Bill Beebe, Stan Troutman, Jim Ober, Dan Madden, Scott Harrison, Richard Smith, Tom Neerken. Hal Garb, George Fry, Nancy Newman, Bill Mochon and Joanna Matos. Any PPAGLA member can donate to the scholarship fund and even amounts of $25 or $50 can make a difference. If you would like to contribute, write a check payable to PPAGLA and send it to: Rick Meyer, 861 E. Brown Drive, Burbank, CA 91504-1838.
