NIGHT VISION IN ASSOCIATION WITH THOMAS JACKS CHOOSING WHAT EQUIPMENT TO FEATURE WITHIN GEAR UP CAN OFTEN BE A HARD TASK - NAMELY BECAUSE IT IS DIFFICULT TO DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN MILITARY/LAW ENFORCEMENT EQUIPMENT AND TACTICAL/OUTDOOR EQUIPMENT. WHILE THERE CERTAINLY IS A HUGE CROSSOVER BETWEEN THE AFOREMENTIONED DESIGNATIONS, AT TIMES YOU DO FIND TACTICAL/OUTDOOR EQUIPMENT THAT SIMPLY WILL NOT TAKE THE ABUSE EXPECTED FROM A MILITARY/LAW ENFORCEMENT PRODUCT... With that said though, we’re also aware that not all equipment has to be specifically for use within those sectors. Why, you ask? Because while Gear Up does look to focus in on the procurement chain, we also have a number of retailers that are simply looking for the next best thing to supply to their customers – of which a lot of them are military or law enforcement personnel buying for their own hobbyist use.

The tactical/outdoor hobbyist world, especially in the United States, is worth a huge amount of money – especially when you factor in hunting as well. And while those in the military world will have access to top of the range equipment while ‘at work’, so to speak, that equipment isn’t necessarily theirs to take home – in fact, large parts of a soldiers equipment is owned by the Department of Defense, and as such, stays on base. Due to this, it is often commonplace to see soldiers buy a range of their own equipment, with AR platforms, plate carriers and tactical clothing seen in abundance. When it comes to heavily regulated pieces of equipment though, night vision is among some of the most policed equipment within the military. In regard to military-grade NVGs, it is often illegal to own them as a civilian, and while we’re unsure on the laws worldwide, the United Kingdom and the United States have some rather strict guidelines in place. In short, military-grade NVGs probably aren’t the best thing to be parading around in for hunting or the likes – not only because you’re likely to get in some form of trouble, but also because they cost a fortune – for example, the Ground Panoramic NVGs from L-£ Warrior Systems (as seen in use by US Navy SEALs) will set you back $65,000. However, that is not to say that all night vision will set you back that amount of money. In fact, over the past few years, civilian-grade night vision has been improving at a steady rate, with a number of companies flying the flag for high-quality night vision that does not break the bank… However, before we move on to exploring some of those options, we want to walk you through the ins and outs of night vision.

010

HOW DOES NIGHT VISION WORK?

Using current colour night vision technology is an eye-opening experience that must be seen to be believed; a whole new world awaits your exploration after the sun has set. Game watching, boating, urban and rural observation, hiking and other outdoor activities can be an exciting experience after dark – especially with the right technology. Choosing the ideal night vision device for your needs can be a complicated process without the proper guidance. Before narrowing your choices, a basic understanding of how these devices work, differences in technology by generation and their features and benefits should all be understood to truly appreciate the device, and to make an educated purchasing decision.

ANALOG ✔

All analog night vision devices share several main components that consist of an objective lens, an eye piece, a power supply, an image-boosting photocathode and photomultiplier. The latter two combined are commonly referred to as an image intensifier tube. Undoubtedly, the real magic lies within the image intensifier tube – which put into very basic terms – absorbs photons (light energy) and releases electrons (electric energy) before converting into light again in the form of an image. At the front of any night vision device is an objective lens, whose job is to gather all available ambient and artificial infrared energy before funnelling it to an electronically powered image intensifier tube. These photons pass through a photocathode, which converts them into electrons. These electrons move on to a micro channel plate (MCP) where they are amplified by a factor of thousands through an electrical and chemical chain reaction created when they impact the micro channel walls. These effectively supercharged electrons then slam into a screen coated in phosphors where they reach an excited state, releasing photons, or visible light, which can be viewed through an eye piece. The image will appear as a clear and crisp amplified recreation of the scene you are observing, but in a combination of greens and black tones.

2

3

THERMAL ✔

An alternative to night vision is a thermal imager. Instead of searching for light to magnify, a thermal imager detects infrared radiation by way of microbolometers that change resistance based on their temperature. This change in resistance can be measured and converted into a viewable image by thousands of microbolometer pixels. All objects emit some level of thermal infrared light; the hotter an object is, the more radiation it emits and the more that light will change the resistance of each bolometer. Resolution is typically far behind current night vision devices yet target detection ranges are typically greater. Until recently, thermal imaging suffered a number of issues in regard to resolution, leading to thermal imagers being more difficult to interpret than their analog or digital counterparts – however, thanks to improvements in pixel pitch, the gap between thermal imaging and it’s competition has lessened. Furthermore, thermal imaging ran into issues regarding target acquisition due to

difficulties in differentiating between different heat sources. However, in recent years this has changed due to something known as NETD (Noise Equivalent Temperature Difference). Generally, the more ‘noise’ there is in an image, the higher that NETD value will be.

4

NOVELTY ✘

At the very bottom of the night vision market are toys advertised as night vision devices to the unassuming. These units are typically cheap and claim to allow the user to see in the dark. A nice quality flashlight is far more effective at the task. At their best, these devices can offer similar performance to inexpensive indoor home security cameras equipped with a night mode, and even then, the image is only discernible at very close distances. In low/no light conditions, even with the aid of an artificial light source, these devices offer extremely limited range and suffer from excessive, image obscuring electronic noise. Anything beyond the distance of its flood illuminator will be unrecognizable.

NIGHT-VISION DEVICES (NVDS) ARE OPTICAL INSTRUMENTS THAT ALLOW THE USER TO SEE IN THE DARK, PRODUCING IMAGERY IN LEVELS OF LIGHT APPROACHING PURE DARKNESS.

DIGITAL ✔

Digital night vision devices operate differently than analog devices, in that light entering the objective lens is transformed into a digital signal by an image sensor of either the Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor sensor (CMOS), or Charge Coupled Device (CCD) variety. These are the same technologies used in all digital cameras. The digital image is enhanced several times before being viewable on the devices display. The larger the CMOS or CCD sensor pixel size, the better it will perform in reduced light. SiOnyx, as an example, has patented technology that enhances sensitivity to near infrared (NIR) wavelengths and therefore provides greater low light performance. Its CMOS sensors produce extremely good low light performance thanks to a combination of its patented technology and a much larger pixel. Currently, the company’s most sensitive sensor is the XQE-1310, producing an impressive 1.3 mega pixels to collect incoming light.

INTRODUCING SIONYX

Back when we were categorising night vision, you may have noticed we slipped a certain company name into the digital section – SiOnyx. Why? Because we wanted to plant the idea in your head from the get-go that when it comes to digital night vision, SiOnyx are innovators; not only in regard to making night vision affordable but also applying new technology to put them at the cutting-edge of night vision devices. SiOnyx is a silicon-based photonics company that develops and manufactures proprietary ultra-low-light CMOS image sensors and high-performance night vision camera systems. These sensors dramatically enhance the performance of light sensing devices commonly used in commercial, industrial, medical, and defence related applications. Best known for their work in the military market, SiOnyx have done a great deal of work with the United States Department of Defense – providing the US Government with advanced imaging and camera technology. Recently the company was awarded a $20 million contract by the United States Army for the delivery of digital night vision cameras for the highly publicised IVAS (Integrated Visual Augmentation System) program – a program started following the potential threats highlighted in the 2018 National Defense Strategy. With that said though, we’re not looking towards military-grade night vision; mainly because anything above Gen.2 is often illegal to own as a civilian, and some countries completely inhibit the use of non-handheld variants of night vision devices. While we’re aware that Gear Up has a large military following, of who will be able to make use of Gen.2 NVGs while on operation, sometimes having Taking this into account, why exactly are we mentioning SiOnyx to you then? Well, because thankfully SiOnyx have seen the need for high-quality digital night vision for the outdoors market in their Aurora range.

012

SIONYX AURORA PRO

The SiOnyx Aurora Pro falls under what is the company’s commercially available and award-winning night vision camera developed for consumer use. Dubbed the ‘Aurora’ range (likely due to the word’s relation to a spectrum of light) this small, lightweight and all digital camera system can perform in moonless starlight conditions, similar to Gen II tactical night vision analog optics. Aimed firmly at the outdoor market, the Aurora range is most commonly used by outdoorsmen, law enforcement, search and rescue, executive protection and mariners around the world.

SIONYX AURORA PRO PRODUCT INFO

The Aurora Pro is the top of the range colour night vision camera manufactured by SiOnyx. Capable of day-time, low-light and night-time recording in colour or monochrome through SiOnyx’s own patented Enhanced Ultra Low-Light Sensor Technology. This sensor is the most sensitive in the SiOnyx product range, making the Aurora Pro the proverbial kingpin of the Aurora range. Designed for fast setting changes, the Aurora Pro features an intuitive switch and dial set-up that allows the user to switch between a number of settings in an instance. The scene ring allows for a custom viewing experience for different times of day and the settings dial allows for fast operating mode changes. Users can also adjust the lens focus and diopter as you would on a normal DSLR camera. The camera has on-board recording, with up to 60 frames a second for video in HD and still photos with shutter speeds up to 1/8000th of a second. The Aurora Pro also features Electronic Image Stabilisation (EIS) which helps to minimise blur and compensates for camera shake. The device includes a variety of camera recording modes, including: burst mode, time-lapse, panoramic view, self-timer, loop mode, slo-mo (shutter control) and HDR (High Dynamic Range). Furthermore, the device features on-board WiFi, meaning the Aurora Pro can be remote-controlled, live-viewed and can share captured images & videos with the SiOnyx App via a smartphone or tablet. With the Aurora Pro being able to record - and at 720p as well, you also eliminate the need to use an action-cam if you’re that way inclined. Chances are if you’re big into recording you’ll already have some form of action-cam available, but does your action-cam film in night vision? no, no it doesn’t, and are night vision recordings way more aesthetically pleasing? yes, yes they are. An internal, electronic compass and GPS allow the user to maintain their bearings as well as, automatically allowing the Aurora Pro to geo-tag images and videos for later use. While this may not necessarily sound like something you would use, it’s definitely handy for sorting through recordings at a later date should you want to throw together a bunch of footage from a game. As previously mentioned, the Aurora Pro can be mounted using a Picatinny Mount (sold separately), lending itself brilliantly to the law enforcement market. The combination of the Aurora Pro’s Quick Release Picatinny Rail Mount, image invert & angle settings and loop mode means you can mount the camera anywhere on your rifle (rail permitting), as

well as capture photos & videos without upset. Loop Mode automatically records when a rifle has been fired, with a choice of capturing 15 seconds before & after, 30 seconds before or 30 seconds after firing. Personally, we’re a huge fan of this feature – allowing law enforcement officers to protect themselves in a court of law in situations that have escalated rapidly. Issues of body cams come into question far too often, and having a device that can record in all environments without having to manually press a button is potentially revolutionary. Furthermore, the Aurora Pro can be paired with a red dot sight, and with some tinkering you’ll find you’re able to make use of your red dot AND your night vision. Should mounting the Aurora Pro to your rifle not be desirable to you (or simply not allowed in your country - please do check any legislation on this as a quick search does show certain countries provoke the use of mounted night vision), you also have the option of fitting the Aurora Pro to a NVG Shroud. Personally, this was our favourite way to mount the Aurora Pro; giving us a very PVS-14 vibe. On the subject of PVS-14, how exactly does the Aurora Pro size up against what we would say is its closest industry-standard comparison? In an interview, SiOnyx’s CMO Dan Cui immediately stated that Gen-3 PVS will see better in pure darkness/moonless environments, and in reality, we would expect no less. This is in part due to the Aurora Pro not having a built-in IR or visible light source like a PVS-14 does to lighten a darkened room. SiOnyx have looked to counter this with the ‘Explorer Edition’ which comes with an IR illuminator among other things, but it’s relatively bulky and a bit of an eye-sore if truth be told - however it does the job, and sometimes that’s all you can ask for. With that said though, the Aurora Pro does a lot of stuff that PVS-14 could only dream of - the aforementioned ability to record in 720p, IP67-Grade waterproofing - IP67 equipment is the most commonly found in the connectivity market. It is 100% protected against solid objects like dust and sand, and it has been tested to work for at least 30 minutes while under 15cm to 1m of water, and image stabilisation. You’re also getting a form of night vision that doesn’t paint the stereotypical idea of night vision – no phosphoric green hue to everything, instead you’re getting a colour image. Furthermore, the Aurora Pro’s compact size and robust bodyshell make it the best tool for outdoor action and weighing in at less than 227 grams (under 8 ounces) make it even easier to carry.

CLOSING THOUGHTS

Having spent a little bit of time with both the Aurora Pro and Aurora Black – big shout outs to Thomas Jacks for supplying both products for review purposes – what do we actually think? Honestly, it’s been a while since we’ve had this much fun with a review product. While we obviously haven’t been able to get to a range to test the Aurora Pro out ‘in combat’ so to speak, we were lucky enough to have a member of staff on hand to take the Aurora Pro and Black out to the Peak District; which we guess is a close 2nd to our intended use for the product. We were already very aware that the use of night vision is massively disorientating when first getting used to it, so to compensate for this we spent some time a little closer to home getting to grips with the Aurora Pro. Anyone who has had the chance to use real-steel analog variants of night vision will be well aware that trying to move quickly and quietly while using night vision can be a difficult task, so there will definitely be somewhat of a steep learning curve to get the most out of the Aurora Pro. However, once you’ve got used to the disorientation and the latency issues that tend to come with all digital products, the Aurora Pro really was a pleasure to use. If we’re honest, we definitely got to use the Pro more than the Black – and that probably shows with the word count written for both products, but since returning to this article (which was originally written a couple of months back), our test team has been putting the Aurora Pro and Black through their paces and both perform admirably. While the Pro is most definitely the premier product in the range, the Black holds it’s own, with the main difference related to the CMOS sensor found within each product. It almost seems like each time the Aurora Pro goes to another member of our test team, they hold onto it for a little longer than they should – almost akin to a bunch of kids trying to make sure the parcel lands on them in a game of pass the parcel.

016

It’s not often that the entirety of the Gear Up team agree on something – we all have different experiences and different uses for tactical equipment, and all have our own favourites when it comes to said equipment. However, each of us unequivocally agreed that the Aurora range from SiOnyx could be game changing. Not only is it great from an outdoor hobbyists point of view, but it could also change the game in regard to more law enforcement officers being able to make use of night vision while on patrol – especially with the Loop Mode settings. One final thought is in regard to the price. With the Aurora Black coming in at £544.00 and the Aurora Pro being just shy of the £800.00 mark, SiOnyx have put themselves in great stead to take the digital night vision market by storm. While neither product is exactly ‘cheap’ in the grand scheme of life, they certainly are affordable within the world of night vision. All we can suggest is trying out SiOnyx’s additions to the market yourselves, and we have no doubt that your eyes will be opened to a whole new world of night vision applications.

NEWS

F O R T H E O P E R AT I O N A L AT H L E T E

VERTX ARE A NAME THAT HAS BEEN ON THE LIPS OF THE GEAR UP TEST TEAM FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME, AND IN OUR OPINION, THE COMPANY OFFER SOME OF THE MOST COMFORTABLE EXAMPLES OF TACTICAL CLOTHING ON THE MARKET. HAVING HAD A NUMBER OF THE COMPANIES’ PRODUCTS IN THE PAST, WITH OUR FIRST FORAY INTO THE VERTX PRODUCT RANGE BEING THE BRILLIANT RECON PANTS, IT’S SAFE TO SAY THAT WE HOLD THE COMPANY IN HIGH REGARD, SO WHEN THEY RELEASE NEW EQUIPMENT, WE PAY ATTENTION.

On top of that, 37.5® particles attract sweat vapor away from the skin and absorb the body’s natural infrared (IR) light, either sending it back when you’re cold or releasing it when you’re hot. Together, Merino and 37.5® Technology are actively working with you, your activity level and your environment to keep you comfortable, dry and odor-free. And unlike standard ring spun yarns, Point6® uses compact spun yarns that are 25% more durable and have fewer loose ends. Leaving you with an ultra-soft, ultra-tough sock with reduced pilling and itch.

So it’ll come to no surprise that when Vertx announced two new collaborations, we dropped what we were doing to take a look, and as things stand, we’re excited to get a closer look in the near future!

While Vertx partnered with Point6 on a manufacturing level to realise a product, their partnership with OpticsPlanet, Inc. sees the exclusive release of a new product – only to be purchased directly via OpticsPlanet. The product; known as the Hardside Hoody, is available in three limited edition colorways, Reaper Red, Open Water Blue and Tarmac and is now available for sale exclusively on opticsplanet.com.

VERTX X POINT6 Having worked within the realms of low-profile tactical equipment since the company’s beginnings, Vertx have recently teamed up with sock experts Point6 to allow them to take a step towards providing a complete clothing repertoire. Part of the expanding line of VaporeCore™ products, the Crew Socks are designed to maximize the benefits of both Merino wool and 37.5® fabric technology. A natural temperature-regulator, Merino’s structure both traps moisture and expands/contracts based on the weather.

“Socks are new territory for Vertx®, so we knew we needed a strong partner to bring our vision to life,” said Denny Bogard, GM/VP of Vertx. “Collaborating with Point6® was an absolute no-brainer. Their products are known as some of the best in the industry and are used by the world’s most elite operators. We couldn’t be happier with how the VaporCore™ Crew Socks fit and perform.”

VERTX X OPTICSPLANET

“As the premier destination for tactical apparel, we are proud to showcase our strongest partnership through exclusive products,” said Alex Royzen, Director of Supply Chain Management. “Vertx® is known for their innovative and functional products and the Hardside Hoody is no exception. We are excited to offer it to our passionate customers!” Keep your eyes peeled for a full look at the new Vertx Hardside Hoody, coming in Issue 17 of Gear Up Magazine!

40MM SINGLE POUCH

What do Force Reconnaissance, Magpul Dynamics and Haley Strategics all have in common? Travis Haley. Travis Haley is a veteran Force Reconnaissance Marine with 15 years of dedicated real world experience including: combat tours in the Middle East, Africa and Central Asia. After leaving the military, Mr Haley served as a special operations and security contractor before partnering with Magpul as founder and CEO of their training division, Magpul Dynamics. Mr Haley also served as CEO of the parent company, Magpul Industries, before breaking off to form the endeavour that would become Haley Strategic Partners. Since the company’s launch, Haley Strategic have produced a range of products that are centred around the idea of ‘less is more’; focusing on equipment that improves your ability to shoot. Of those products, the Haley Strategic Disruptive Environments™ range has been received the best, with operators around the world making use of some example of the range of chest rigs. And now, Haley Strategics have a plethora of chest rigs to offer their user base.

022

The 40MM Single pouch is very much a no bells or whistles product – it simply does what it says on the tin… yet this tin is 40MM of ordinance that you want carried in a safe manner. The 40MM Single is a MOLLE open top design that allows for a faster ordnance deployment. For enhanced retention, each of the rounds are secured with 1.5” nylon webbing with 2” rubber gripper woven elastic. In reality, there’s little to say about the 40MM Single Pouch other than the fact it does its job and does so as well as tactical nylon should be expected to. Furthermore, due to its small footprint, it’s possible to put these in places you feel best suited – whether it be a single offering wedged in between other pouches or a row to ensure you have enough bang for your buck!

40MM 5 BANGER HANGER Drop down pouches. Kangaroo pouches. Hanger pouches. Whatever you call them, it’s clear to say that the Velcro ‘fanny pack’ is here to stay. Over the past couple of years, these pouches have seen a massive rise in popularity, with a number of different examples hitting the market. However, Haley Strategic have brought something new to the table with the 5 Banger Hanger.

The “5BH” carries 5 rounds of your choice. All the flavours from smoke, less lethal and any other ordnance currently being used in the wild. The design allows the operator to place the hanger in the perfect position on the sub abdominal region for fast access and comfort. 500 Denier Nylon Cordura foundation with Hook and Loop attachment with stiffener to allow for a faster ordnance deployment. For enhanced retention, each of the rounds are secured with 1.5” nylon webbing with 2” rubber gripper woven elastic. The 5BH has hook Velcro on the back and loop Velcro on the front which will fit on most all plate carriers and chest rigs with hook and loop.

HELIKON-TEX ARE SOMEWHAT OF AN ODDITY IN THE TACTICAL GEAR MARKET. BY THAT WE MEAN THAT THEIR JOURNEY TO BECOMING ONE OF THE BIGGEST MANUFACTURERS IN EUROPE IS RATHER DIFFERENT TO A LOT OF THEIR COMPETITORS. IT WAS NOT A NEW DESIGN OR INNOVATIVE FEATURE THAT BIRTHED HELIKON-TEX. INSTEAD, HELIKON-TEX WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1983, WITH THE COMPANY FOCUSING ON THE ACQUISITION AND SALE OF MILITARY SURPLUS. HOWEVER, THE MID-NINETIES SAW THE COMPANY CHANGE DIRECTION, AND BY 1999 HELIKON-TEX BEGAN TO DESIGN AND MANUFACTURE THEIR OWN RANGE OF MILITARY AND PARAMILITARY EQUIPMENT. W W W.GEARUP-MAG.COM

QUICK LOOK

In reality, very few items enter this timeless category as technology tends to move incredibly fast. What we think may be a mainstay of the tactical gear industry now might vanish in a decade due to some form of advancement. For example, I’m sure that in a centuries’ time things will look a lot different from they are now, the same way military equipment from the beginning of the 20th century now looks like it came from a time closer to the American Civil War than today.

Helikon-Tex’s continued success is proof that their decision was right, and they are proud to offer a wide range of uniforms, tactical clothing, backpacks, boots and equipment that have gained recognition among soldiers, policemen, law enforcement officers, survival and outdoor enthusiasts all over the world. The company is staffed by those passionate about providing a brilliant end product to the user which combines brilliant design features with cutting edge materials. Generally, like all things in the world, tactical innovations will be stamped as timely or timeless – although, you will occasionally come across a product that falls into neither category and is more a case of “what were they thinking?!” – ACU we’re looking at you here… With that said though, those products are few and far between, and in reality we’re purely dealing with the two aforementioned categories of timely or timeless. Some equipment will flash up for a period of time, drum up a huge amount of hype and then disappear as soon as they appeared, akin to fashion trends, while other items will enter the realms of being timeless.

026

So, with that in mind, what exactly are we referring to when we mean ‘timeless’ if pretty much every example we’ve given so far eludes to the fact that something cannot be timeless in reality? Well, essentially, we’re referring to products that have had a shelf life longer than what would be deemed regular. The M1 Helmet could be deemed as timeless had helmet technology not came on leaps and bounds since. The Chi-Com chest rig could certainly be deemed as timeless though, as while technology has generally come on a fair way since the inception of the chest rig immortalised due to the Vietnam War, it is still in use and isn’t that far from what modern day variants are. One product that is most certainly timeless though is the M65 Jacket. Introduced into U.S. military service in 1965 to replace the M-1951 field jacket which was an improvement on the M-1943 field jacket of World War II design, The M-65 field jacket was widely used by United States forces during the Vietnam War in which the jacket became useful for troops serving in the central highlands of South Vietnam, especially in cool weather conditions following monsoonal rains. It was a standard issue to U.S. troops participating in several other wars all around the world as well, with the United States Army making use of the jacket up until 2009.

COVERT M65 JACKET The Covert M65 Jacket is by no means a new, innovative piece of equipment to hit the tactical gear industry. However, nor is it something that is vastly outdated and in turn, a complete waste of the material it is made from. What the Covert M65 Jacket is though is a well thought out piece of clothing that has further immortalised a product that is now out of military production. Due to the lifespan of the M65 Jacket, for better or worse, it has become somewhat a beacon of popular culture. The jacket has appeared in a range of films, from The Terminator through to Taxi Driver and as such it has almost lost its military demeanour. In light of this, the M65 is perfect for covert operations when discretion is paramount. Equipped with functional outer pockets, it allows you to conveniently carry items necessary for performance and self-defense. Thanks to the use of a durable DuraCanvas® fabric it is also an excellent choice for everyday use, especially in the autumn and winter period, when it will protect the user from light rain and wind. Inside, symmetrically on the left and the right side, there are pockets for magazines. The two outer pockets on the sides can serve as improvised dump pouches.

THIS CLASSIC MILITARY JACKET HAS BEEN ADDITIONALLY REINFORCED IN PLACES EXPOSED TO DAMAGE AND EQUIPPED WITH A HOOD HIDDEN IN THE COLLAR. THE FRONT IS FASTENED WITH STRONG CANADIAN BUTTONS AND A “BREAK-AWAY” ZIPPER WHICH ALLOWS IMMEDIATE UNFASTENING OF THE JACKET.

When U.S. troops were deployed in the global war on terror, the clothing systems they had did not perform. They were heavy, stiff and didn’t breathe. They definitely weren’t cut for the modern, athletic warrior.

OTTE GEAR LAUNCH NEW STYLES

OTTE was conceived to fill that gap. We began by supplying door kickers, good guys and bad-asses worldwide. Now we outfit shooters, hunters, overlanders, and backcountry travellers across the globe. Not to mention guys preparing for the Zombie apocalypse.

OTTE Gear is proud to launch a collection of durable, comfortable, and innovative insulated jackets and everyday pants built for wherever daily life takes you – down range, work and out to dinner with the missus. We used premium Primaloft® Gold insulation, Patriot Lite fabric, MultiCam® patterns, Cordura® and the best trims out there. What you get is a pupu platter of bells and whistles in great looking lo-vis profiles.

OTTE Gear is designed for folks going light, fast and hard. Using the most innovative materials available, they design products capable of handling extremely demanding situations like the best waterproof/breathable rainwear and the toughest stretch woven jackets and pants. GHOST BACKPACK

Looking to best serve their userbase, Polish-based Direct Action have invested in the necessary understanding of the needs of various operators across the globe. Combining this knowledge with a design ethos centred around providing top-of-the-range products and high quality manufacturing capabilities, Direct Action have created a range of equipment that serves the modern warfighter in any and all situations. Every detail has been rigourously thought out from a systemic perspective, with no random design choices, no compromises made, and no shying away from new technology that has entered the marketplace. Each part of the Direct Action system has been designed in a way that it perfectly combines with various other items in their product range. This has allowed Direct Action to realise their mission statement of creating products that complement weapons systems, load baring equipment, backpacks, jackets and duty uniforms, with each composite part creating a bigger picture that as a whole allows for improved operating power, leading to the successful completion of the end users mission.

034

The load on the modern warfighter has increased over time, with modern technology and mission requirements demanding the increased capacity of each and every man or woman in their area of operations, the need to expand the modern warfighters load baring capabilities is important. Direct Action’s range of backpacks does exactly this, providing operators around the world with a number of different platforms that increase the load each individual can manage while taking part in operations, with each item providing the end user with a solid platform to carry any mission-specific equipment. The Ghost MKII Backpack is a 30+ litre backpack, perfect for use as a patrol pack in the military world, with an emphasis placed on scalability. Broken into two main sections, the main pack offers two large zippered compartments, including an internal hydration sleeve and an accessory mesh pocket. PRODUCT

WHEN LOOKING THROUGH THE PAST CENTURY OF AMERICAN MILITARY EQUIPMENT, NOTHING IS QUITE AS ICONIC AS THE M1 HELMET. OFTEN SEEN AS A VISUAL REPRESENTATION OF THE AMERICAN FIGHTING MAN, THE M1 HELMET HAS BEEN IMMORTALISED IN MILITARY EQUIPMENT TERMS, SPANNING THREE MAJOR AMERICAN CONFLICTS. OVER THE YEARS, MILLIONS OF AMERICAN SOLDIERS HAVE DEPLOYED TO HOSTILE SHORES, EACH OF THEM SPORTING A M1 HELMET – IN FACT, THE M1 HELMET WAS ONE OF VERY FEW PIECES OF EQUIPMENT THAT SUCCESSFULLY NEGOTIATED THREE MAJOR CONFLICTS – WORLD WAR II, THE KOREAN WAR AND THE VIETNAM WAR, BEING TESTAMENT TO ITS SUCCESS. However, while the M1 Helmet saw a great deal of service; with the helmet being in active military use until 1983, it was by no means the most scientifically advanced helmet, nor did it make use of the best materials at the time. In fact, it may come as a surprise that the metallurgy – in short, a materials science and engineering discipline that studies the physical and chemical behaviours of metallic elements, inter-metallic compounds and alloys – is in fact over a century old. More importantly, the M1 Helmet was never improved upon.

036

The M1 was made from Hadfield Steel — an inferior armour alloy that first saw use in the early days of World War One. As far back as 1917, United States manufacturers attempted to produce helmets from high-hardness chrome-nickel-vanadium steel. Unfortunately, these methods met with failure; the steel was too difficult to form with the means available at the time, and inevitably cracked during the stamping operation. The US had to resort to helmets of Hadfield’s high-manganese steel simply because it could be made cheaply and rapidly with that era’s methods of production.

13/11/2020 11:35

the m1 evolved Now while this may have been acceptable at the time due to the need for vast numbers of M1 Helmets and the production capabilities of the time, it seems extremely odd that the United States Military never re-visited this following World War II, or at least following the Korean War. This is by no means to say that the United States didn’t look to experiment with other helmet materials between the 1940s and 1980s. In fact, it did a huge amount of work within the sector – mostly experimenting with fibre composites, along with some later work exploring the use of polycarbonate as a helmet material. While a number of these experiments provided a performance increase, the United States determined that “in essentially all candidate materials, the relative gains afforded by a new material or combination thereof were not considered to be cost-effective”. Furthermore, another thing to take note of is that the United States chose not to properly explore further steel options, especially having used a steel-based helmet in the M1 for over forty years. They were aware from a very early stage; due to experiments with captured helmets, that the German helmets performed considerably better than the M1 on a weight basis, and they also knew that the German Si-Mn alloy — a very lean alloy due to wartime constraints — was by no means the optimal alloy for helmet development. The fact that the United States research teams did not choose to look towards other steel-based alloys has at times been placed upon the obsession with fibre-composite helmets. The US Navy put a lot of research into the EX series of helmets; often referred to as the ‘Doron’ Helmet due to it being manufactured using DORON, a glass-cloth laminate. Due to this, when Kevlar was invented, the United States Military pushed through the design of a Kevlar-based helmet, leading to the invention of the ‘K-Pot’, officially known as the PASGT Level IIIA Ballistic Helmet. While it would be ridiculous to say the use of Kevlar helmets was a failure – because it most certainly wasn’t, it just took a long period of time to get to Kevlar – it does almost leave you wondering what could have been achieved via different avenues. Had the United States military applied the years of use of the M1 towards experimenting with other steel alloys; especially due to the research it was able to carry out in regard to the German equivalent of World War II, we may have seen a very different direction followed for helmet manufacturing, and technology in general. In light of this, what if we were to tell you that the days of wondering may well be over?

FOLLOWING YEARS OF RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT DIAMOND AGE ARE LOOKING TOWARDS STEEL AS A HELMET ALLOY ONCE AGAIN – APPLYING HUGE ADVANCEMENTS IN STEEL PROCESSING TECHNOLOGIES AND MANUFACTURING A HELMET FROM A VASTLY STRONGER STEEL-BASED ALLOY. Designed for the European police market, the NeoSteel Helmet is the next evolution of the steel helmet. Built to withstand all of today’s threats. It is more comfortable, more modular, and more adaptable... The NeoSteel Helmet is the M1, evolved.

NEOSTEEL HELMET

While the NeoSteel Helmet is not the original steel helmet in historical terms – with that title likely belonging to the helmets worn by Roman soldiers, it is most certainly the most advanced steel helmet on the market. Evolutionary in design, function, and material capability, the NeoSteel Helmet is an evolution in personal protection. Designed to meet the ever-changing needs of police and military personnel, including reserves and auxiliaries, the NeoSteel Helmet is the result of years of scientific research and development to ensure a high level of ballistic performance (VPAM-3 + Special Threats) at the lightest possible weight with all-day comfort and balance characteristics. Diamond Age CEO, Jake Ganor, commented, “We are thrilled to be unveiling the NeoSteel Helmet to our law enforcement, security, rescue, contractor, and personal defence customers. Not since the original combat helmets have we seen such a huge step forward in protective tactical helmets. The NeoSteel Helmet is a metallurgical milestone. It’s what the M1 steel-pot helmet would have evolved into, had it not been abandoned in favour of the K-Pot helmet.” During the NeoSteel Helmet R&D, it underwent rigorous developmental testing for ballistic impact and Diamond Age is proud to announce the NeoSteel Helmet offers best-in-class performance for minimal backface deformation (BFD) and impact trauma. Unlike current polymer-based helmets, the NeoSteel is also environmentally stable, providing users years of consistent rim-to-rim protection, without material degradation that would severely compromise protection performance. According to Diamond Age, composite helmets offer little protection around their rims; hits near the helmet edge can cause the ballistic material to roll, resulting in penetrations or excessive trauma. For this reason, the ACH spec has always included this terminology on fair hits: “An impact resulting in a complete penetration shall be considered unfair if it is within 1.5-inches of another impact, within 1.5-inches of the closest edge of any hole, within 1.0-inch of the edge of the helmet.“

038

ON THE STREETS AND IN THE FIELD, NOT ALL SHOTS ARE FAIR. BUT THE NEOSTEEL HELMET HAS YOU COVERED: IT OFFERS FULL EDGE-TO-EDGE PROTECTION – WHICH VASTLY INCREASES ITS AREA OF PROTECTIVE COVERAGE. DIAMOND AGE REPORT THAT A LEADING COMPETITOR’S HELMET OFFERS 136 SQUARE INCHES OF COVERAGE IN A SIZE L – BUT THE STATED PROTECTIVE AREA OF THAT HELMET IS UNDER 90 SQUARE INCHES. THE STEEL HELMET OFFERS WELL OVER 110 SQUARE INCHES OF REAL PROTECTION. “We’re confident that the NeoSteel Helmet hits the mark as the world’s toughest combat helmet. Development of leading-edge ballistic equipment is our single purpose, and our testing has shown the NeoSteel to be capable of withstanding tremendous operational damage before its form or function is compromised,” Ganor added.

the m1 evolved BEHIND ARMOUR TRAUMA

The NeoSteel™ Helmet is not capable of significant backface deformation, and its stiff shell spreads the kinetic energy load across the entire padding system. In contrast, with a lightweight composite helmet, backface deformation is a real concern, and is associated with injuries up to and including skull fracture. In any case, with either helmet, neck injuries resulting from head acceleration are very unlikely. A report by the Committee on Testing of Body Armor Materials for Use by the U.S. Army has examined the transfer of momentum in ballistic head impacts, and estimates that there’s a less than 0.1% chance of neck injury following small arms helmet impacts, up to and including 7.62x51mm rifle round impacts. This has been corroborated in tests performed by other labs. The NeoSteel™ Helmet doesn’t only exhibit good ballistic performance – it does so in a way that poses effectively no risk of blunt impact injury to the helmet wearer. It won’t just keep you alive; it’ll enable you to return fire. No other helmet can say the same. Further, TBI has been called “the signature injury of modern warfare,” and its emergence over the course of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan has revealed that there are injuries that current helmets have not been designed to protect against. Helmets must continue to evolve to address today’s threats. The NeoSteel™ Helmet’s ultra-rigid shell and industry-leading padding system ensure extremely good blunt impact and blast protection. The NeoSteel™ Helmet may be a key component in the ongoing fight against blast-induced TBI.

VENTAIL FACE PROTECTOR

The NeoSteel Ventail offers enhanced protection from ballistic threats — covering the face, the side of the head, and a portion of the anterior neck. It also offers protection from blunt impact, blast overpressure, and debris. Mounts rapidly and securely to the helmet via the four retention system holes on the shell. Fully compatible with most ballistic glasses, the Ventail offers an unconstrained field of vision, and is significantly lighter and tougher than transparent ballistic visors.

BALLISTIC PERFORMANCE

The NeoSteel™ Helmet is fully VPAM 3 compliant, and is capable of stopping a wide variety of potent special threats, including: ■ 7.62x25mm Tokarev at 1650 fps. ■ 5.7x28mm ball rounds at over 2000 fps. ■ 9x19mm 80gr. solid copper spun (SCS) rounds at carbine velocities.

Diamond Age also state that the NeoSteel Helmet performances well against fragmentation threats, comparable to aramid helmets like the PASGT.

COMBAT CIRCLET

Encircling the helmet, the Combat Circlet is an ideal mounting platform for NVGs and other head borne accessories. The Combat Circlet is manufactured out of tough glass-filled polymer via advanced additive manufacturing techniques. It weighs just two ounces but is impressively strong and resilient. Mounted securely to the four retention-system holes on the helmet, it provides: ■ An NVG bracket (requires no drill holes) and bungee cord ports for stabilization and NVG retention. ■ M-Lok side rails that accept accessories directly, and can also be used as a platform for Picatinny adapters. ■ A vertical crest for more stability, and more accessory-mounting real estate. There are numerous modules in development for the crest, including applique blast protection, and an applique ghillie module. ■ A rear tie-down bar for enhanced stability, with or without a counterweight. ■ Clean routing points for external cables. ■ Direct integration with the Face Protector.

SureFire is a story of what can be accomplished with light. The tale begins in 1969 when an engineer with a Ph.D. from Cal Tech decided the future lay in lasers. Dr. John Matthews founded the Newport Corporation to harness the power of the laser for industrial applications. Soon after, John’s inventive mind turned toward his hobby and passion, shooting, and in 1979, John’s concepts became reality as he designed and patented a laser sight. The original laser sight was large and unwieldy by today’s standards. Further refinement of the technology would have required the board of the Newport Corporation to approve substantial investments. Due to this being unlikely, John, accompanied by a number of staff members who shared his vision, bought the company, renaming it ‘Laser Products’ in the process. This change allowed John to focus his efforts entirely on laser products, which over the years led to the launch of the SureFire WeaponLight. Laser Products went on to establish itself as the leading manufacturer of rugged, powerful and compact illumination tools for tactical applications - with a plethora of different products available for purchase. Eventually, after the booming success of the SureFire WeaponLight, the company rebranded under the name ‘SureFire LLC.’. With the name becoming so synonymous with excellence in hand-held illumination, a change seemed inevitable, and the company have continued to create products for the military and shooting worlds since.

XSC WEAPONLIGHT Micro-compact handguns make up a large percentage of handgun sales in the United States – in fact, a quick look towards the most purchased firearms in the USA highlights that micro-compacts are very much in vogue with Americans across the continent. Micro-compacts have also slowly started gaining traction within law-enforcement and military worlds, and while not classified as issue equipment – at least, we couldn’t find any examples of either making use of micro-compacts, they are certainly seeing use within both fields. With such an increase in popularity, it was always inevitable that companies would begin creating accessories, and while some items such as reflex sights are on a whole interchangeable between micro-compacts and their larger brethren, weapon mounted flashlights do not share the same flexibility. Due to micro-compacts having incredibly shortened barrels, your typical weapon mounted flashlight simply will not fit a micro-compact, leaving a gap in the market. As the market leader in weapons’ accessories, SureFire were quick to ensure they gained an advantage on their competitors – recently releasing the world’s first micro-compact compatible weapon light in the XSC. Extremely compact and virtually indestructible, the new rechargeable SureFire XSC family delivers intense white light, allowing you to face the dark with confidence. Its micro-footprint doesn’t hamper concealability, so you’ll have it with you when you need it most.

There are three models in the line-up, each precisely engineered and purpose-built for a seamless & secure fit to each host handgun. The XSC-A is made for the Glock 43X & 48 with accessory rail, the XSC-P365 is for the SIG SAUER P365 &amp P365 XL and the XSC-HELLCAT is for the Springfield Armory Hellcat line of handguns. Less than 2 inches long and weighing under 2 ounces, the XSC provides an immense force multiplier to each host handgun with no compromise in concealability. Intuitive, ambidextrous switching provides ease of momentary-or constant-on activation with one or two hands. The XSC’s premium LED delivers 350 lumens of intense white light via a parabolic reflector, creating a concentrated hot-spot with significant throw and surrounding spill. Made from rugged aerospace aluminium, the body is Mil-Spec hard anodized for scratch and corrosion resistance. The XSC is gasket sealed for weatherproof and waterproof reliability, and it is IPX7-rated. The XSC is rechargeable via a quick-detach lithium polymer battery, and can be changed without removing the XSC from the host pistol. The battery charger is included with purchase, and it is capable of charging two batteries simultaneously. Each battery features a LED fuel gauge that displays charge level with the press of a button.

ROBOTIC COMBAT VEHICLES

THE ARMY’S COLLECTION OF ARMED ROBOTIC COMBAT VEHICLES SHOWCASED AN “EXCEPTIONAL” ABILITY TO IDENTIFY ENEMY POSITIONS AFTER ABOUT A MONTH OF TESTING, BUT MORE DEVELOPMENT IS STILL NEEDED TO IMPROVE BATTLEFIELD PRECISION, SAID BRIG. GEN. RICHARD COFFMAN. COFFMAN, DIRECTOR OF THE NEXT-GENERATION COMBAT VEHICLE CROSS-FUNCTIONAL TEAM, PRAISED THE CAPABILITIES OF THE FOUR ROBOTIC COMBAT VEHICLES, OR RCVS, DURING THE PLATOON LIVE-FIRE EXERCISES HERE.

NEWS

US ARMY ROBOTIC COMBAT VEHICLES DISPLAY NEXT-GEN CAPABILITIES SOLDIERS FROM THE 4TH INFANTRY DIVISION USED TWO MODIFIED BRADLEY FIGHTING VEHICLES, CALLED MISSION ENABLING TECHNOLOGIES-DEMONSTRATORS, OR MET-DS, TO CONTROL AND MANEUVER THE RCVS TO DETERMINE WHETHER THE AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES INCREASED THE LETHALITY AND EFFICIENCY OF GROUND UNITS.

control the RCVs up to a 2,000-meter range, but struggled to extend that distance in dense forest regions, Coffman said. Developers plan to add more features to the vehicles in Phase II of testing, including a new radio tether to increase the operating range, an unmanned aerial vehicle and a target recognition capability based on synthetic data. Phase II, which is scheduled for the first quarter of fiscal year 2022 at Fort Hood, Texas, will feature three platoons of robotic vehicle with control vehicles.

“The ability [to spot enemies] was exceptional, because that reduces the risk on our Soldiers and allows us to remain in a covered and concealed position and make decisions,” Coffman said during a media conference call Thursday.

“This is about commanders on the battlefield and giving them more decision space and reducing the risk on our men and women,” Coffman said. “We go into the nastiest places on earth. And these robots are absolutely going to do that in the future. We’re not there 100% yet.”

The MET-Ds, which are manned with six Soldiers, have 360-degree situational awareness cameras, a remote turret with a 25 mm main gun, and enhanced crew stations with touchscreens. The RCVs are M113 surrogate platforms that also have 360 cameras and fire 7.62 mm machine guns. From inside the MET-Ds, Soldiers were able to

A third party will evaluate the technical and tactical performance of the operating crews and robotic vehicles, as well as the overall success of the experiment. The findings will then be briefed to the service’s senior leaders. After the evaluation of Phase II’s results, Coffman said the Army will decide whether to continue testing.

ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT Soldiers testing the autonomous vehicles noted that greater sensory capabilities must be developed for the controlled vehicles to serve as unmanned replacements. “Right now we don’t have sensors that can tell whether we’re coming across a little puddle that we can just drive through or whether that puddle is 8 feet deep and going to bog us down,” said Jeffrey Langhout, director of the Army Combat Capabilities Development Command’s Ground Vehicle System Center. “A robot can navigate its own way and it relies on the sensors that it has to keep from driving into ditches and all kinds of problems. We certainly have a long way to go on that.” Sgt. Matthew Morris, assigned to 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th ID, said the lack of downward visibility hindered operation of the RCVs. He said the vehicle’s ability to see down steep terrain must improve to prevent the vehicle from overturning. When a human drives a vehicle into soft sand they instinctively know to shift to a lower driving gear and the RCVs must develop that sensitivity, Coffman said. “For me specifically, I think that the ability to see downward once we approach certain inclines and declines would probably be an astute upgrade that would push us forward in the right direction,” Morris said, adding the vehicles must increase its audio signature to increase communication abilities with crew members. Vehicle operator Sgt. Scott Conklin, who is also with 3rd ABCT, said that the two-person crew could handle the increased workload, but the frenetic pace of operating with the 360 cameras made the RCVs challenging to operate. Coffman said regardless of how the program evolves, he said humans will retain a level of autonomy over the robotic combat vehicles.

“WE DON’T WANT A FULLY AUTONOMOUS VEHICLE,” HE SAID. “WE DON’T WANT THE MACHINE DECIDING. WE WANT VERY SPECIFIC RULES OF WHAT THAT MACHINE WILL AND WILL NOT DO. THE HUMANS ARE IN CHARGE.”

ATLANTIC SIGNAL RECEIVE US ARMY BRIGADE ORDER FOLLOWING A GREAT DEAL OF SUCCESS WITHIN THE AMERICAN COMMUNICATIONS MARKET ALREADY – HAVING SUPPLIED COMMUNICATIONS SOLUTIONS TO FBI’S HOSTAGE RESCUE TEAMS AND SPECIAL OPERATIONS UNITS, ATLANTIC SIGNAL HAVE RECENTLY WON A CONTRACT TO SUPPLY THE UNITED STATES SECURITY FORCE. THE CONTRACT WILL SEE ATLANTIC SIGNAL SUPPLY THEIR WELL-RECEIVED VIPER II CONTROL HUB AS WELL AS THE NEW COMTAC VI HEADSET. Atlantic Signal began development of its new VIPER II Control Hub / Push-to-Talk in early 2019 with the input and assistance of several key customers. There had been a clear dissatisfaction with the design and capabilities, or lack thereof, of several of the PTT/control box options on the market that could interface with both standard and dual band radios along with various ancillary cable capabilities. Further, Atlantic Signal introduced the Brigade to its exclusive ComTac VI headset featuring the all new NIB feature. The ComTac VI offers a new way to adjust the auditory settings of the headset for each mission. Traditionally, a headset has a set frequency response, and the operator can only increase or decrease the volume. The MAP function provides new advanced ambient listening modes that allow access to a variety of gain settings, but with frequency shaping, to enhance auditory performance in five conditions. The MAP Profiles have been designed with a variety of combat and combat support operations in mind. NIB enables short-range, headset-to-headset communication in high noise environments, without the use of an external communications radio. The NIB function allows for 4 team members to speak simultaneously, and over 60 people within a 10 – meter radius to listen at any given time. Audio transmit is activated by either a voice activated switch (VOX) for hands free operations or by push-to-talk. The VOX switch is adaptive, meaning the threshold to activate will adjust

052

automatically to the noise environment. To help reduce user burden, a tactile button has been added to the left ear cup that allows the user to easily turn on or off the function / and switch from VOX to PTT settings. “We listened closely and carefully to several of our most demanding Federal LE and Military Special Operations customers in an attempt to better understand how their needs had changed and or broadened since several of our competitor’s dual band PTTs had come to market. Without divulging the detailed reasons as to why our VIPER I and VIPER II Control Hub/PTT is different from our competitors – some of those design changes are immediately recognizable but just as important are the tasks the VIPERs can perform and how easily each individual can program the VIPER for a personal end user experience. Nothing is complicated from the operator’s engagement perspective but a Control Hub / PTT that is VERY powerful both from the outlook of what it can do now and how it can be utilized in the future. After nearly 18 months in development and dozens of generations / modifications of both VIPER models in the field, we’ve received orders ranging from dozens to hundreds to over a thousand in a single purchase.” states Randall Hedrick, President and Managing General Member of Atlantic Signal. The first SFAB was raised in 2018 at Fort Benning, GA, On May 18, 2018, the Army announced that the Security Force Assistance Command (SFAC) would be established at Fort Bragg. This division-level Command, led by a Brigadier General, will oversee the Army’s six Security Force Assistance Brigades, as well as the MATA for SFAB training and oversight.

3rd SFAB tested and evaluated the Atlantic Signal combination of the VIPER II PTT, ComTac VI headset and an assortment of custom cables both CONUS and OCONUS and decided upon this product mix to replace their current communication systems.

HAVING CELEBRATED 30 YEARS IN THE TACTICAL COMMUNICATIONS INDUSTRY IN 2019, ATLANTIC SIGNAL HAVE COME A LONG WAY. STARTING OUT IN A SMALL BUILDING IN KANSAS IN 1989 WITH A HANDFUL OF EMPLOYEES, TRYING TO ACHIEVE EVEN THE SLIGHTEST SHARE OF A VERY NICHE TACTICAL LAW ENFORCEMENT COMMS MARKETSPACE, THEY’VE NOW GROWN TO BE THE LARGEST ANCILLARY CUSTOM TACTICAL COMMUNICATIONS DESIGNER AND MANUFACTURER IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Atlantic Signal not only design, develop and manufacture headsets and push-to-talks, they have their own engineering and design teams, cable and connector manufacturing, CNC machines, 3D printers, laser engraving and mold making divisions. All of the products they manufacture are designed, developed and manufactured in the United States – more specifically in Topeka, Kansas. Atlantic Signal have grown to such heights that they are now proud to be teaming up with the Peltor Division of 3M and have become their largest tactical communications distributor. They are also a value-added supplier to Peltor, enabling Atlantic Signal to modify their headsets to meet the demands and requirements of a very diverse client base. Furthermore, the company have exclusive rights to the next generation COMTAC V headset and have recently designed and now supply exclusive custom push-to-talks, cables and accessories for 3M’s public safety communications North-American distribution network. With a vast client base which includes – Naval Special Warfare, Federal Bureau of Investigation, United States Coast Guard, U.S. Air Force Special Operations, LAPD SWAT, Customs and Border Patrol, ATF, U.S. Secret Service, ICE, MARSOC, U.S. Army, Joint Special Operations Command, DEA, U.S. Marshalls and thousands upon thousands of additional law enforcement and military clients in North American and abroad, Atlantic Signal are proud to have been chosen by these agencies, departments and organizations and continue to work to maintain the trust bestowed upon them to deliver the right products at the right time for the right price.

OVER THE PAST WE’VE LOOKED AT A RANGE OF MULTI-TOOLS DESIGNED FOR THE OUTDOORS. WITH COMPANIES LIKE GERBER AND SOG KNIVES PRODUCING A RANGE OF QUALITY MULTI-TOOLS DESIGNED FOR THAT AO, IT ISN’T SURPRISING THAT OTHER COMPANIES ARE LOOKING TOWARDS THE MULTI-TOOL AND LOOKING TO ADAPT IT FOR SPECIFIC USES. ONE SUCH USE IS AS A WEAPONS TOOL, DESIGNED TO MAKE THE MAINTENANCE OF YOUR WEAPON EASIER.

A GOOD MULTI-TOOL SHOULD BE SOMETHING EVERY SHOOTER CARRIES WITH THEM. WE CAN’T BEGIN TO FATHOM THE TIMES THAT WE’VE BEEN AT A SITE AND HAD SOMEONE ASK TO BORROW A MULTI-TOOL BECAUSE SOMETHING OF THEIRS HAS BROKE DURING GAME AND THEY NEED A TOOL TO FIX IT. HECK, A MULTI-TOOL EVEN MAKES THE PROCESS OF WINDING UP OR WINDING DOWN YOUR HOP-UP UNIT EASIER. BUT WHY ARE WE SUCH ADVOCATES FOR MULTI-TOOLS? BECAUSE THEY OFFER MULTIPLE TOOLS IN A VERY SMALL, VERY HANDY CARCASS THAT CAN BE CARRIED WITH YOU PRETTY MUCH ANYWHERE. That said, the Multitasker Series 3 Multi-tool is a little different. Why? Because it’s a tool designed purely for the up-keep of your weapon, and with many people keen on modding their weapons, having a multi-tool designed purely to aid that should surely be a no-brainer.

SERIES 3 You may have seen other “shooter oriented” tools, but what makes Multitasker® unique is their weapon-specific design approach. Nothing else can rival their feature set for the AR platform of rifles or match their build quality.

056

Unlike other mass produced multitools, Multitasker utilises “best in class” materials and production methods to achieve build quality that is head and shoulders above the competition. For example, instead of cost-saving investment castings, Multitasker employs CNC machining (and solid billet steel material) to make the plier head and other major components. G10 scales, commonly used for tactical knives, are selected to help insure a slip-resistant gripping surface. Aluminium-Bronze washers and rust resistant Ti CarboNitride (TiCN) treatment on the pliers help provide for maintenance-free operation.

■ D2 TOOL STEEL PLIERS CNC’d from D2 tool steel, you won’t need to worry about a surprise failure and have half the plier head snap off when put to use. Featuring aggressive teeth towards the back, while getting progressively finer towards the tip for finer needs. Also included are replaceable wire cutters.

■ KNIFE / BLADE A tough and extremely sharp edged multitool knife that will stand up to repeated and continuous use. Built from tough D2 tool steel for strength & durability, it holds a sharp edge longer. The 3" blade is easily deployable by it’s outside positioning and thumb stud.

■ GET THE GUNK OUT The carbon scraper is intended for a real steel AR-15 to help remove the build up of carbon around the bolt. The radius tip is formed perfectly for this and takes the most dreaded task out of cleaning. We have also found it helps remove dirt and grime from those hard to reach areas.

■ CASTLE NUT WRENCH & FLAT HEAD Handy in the field, handy in the shop. It may be rare that your castle nut comes loose in the field, but it can happen. The Multitasker Series 3 provides a quick and easy 'field fix' that will save the day should you or your buddies find your stock coming loose.

■ 3/32" PIN PUNCH & 8-32 MALE THREAD A punch is always useful in the field, it’s even more useful when underneath it lies a 8-32 male thread adapter. This is a feature that you may not need to use all that much, but it is useful to call on if needs be. The thread adapter is sized to fit pull-through/cable style cleaning kits.

WWW.THOMASJACKS.CO.UK AN UPDATE TO THE CLASSIC EVERYDAY CARRY POCKET KNIFE: THE SHARKBELLY. THIS SMARTLY DESIGNED KNIFE OFFERS LIGHTWEIGHT UTILITY, PROUDLY MADE IN THE USA. THE SHARKSKIN GRIP™ SUCCEEDS IN FUNCTION AND AESTHETICS WITH UNIDIRECTIONAL SCALES THAT PROVIDE ADDITIONAL TRACTION WHEN IN HAND. THE 420HC SHEEPSFOOT BLADE IS EASILY DEPLOYED WITH A SIZABLE THUMB HOLE, REVEALING A FULL FINE EDGE BLADE THAT IS PRACTICAL FOR DAILY USE. SHARKBELLY FOLDING KNIFE

The SharkBelly is a very interesting prospect as instead of being as heavily built as possible, it’s actually half plastic (fibreglass reinforced nylon). This means that instead of a bulky, weighty and more expensive knife, you get a lightweight, cost-effective and very slimline piece of kit.

058

With an overall length of 7.75” when unfolded and a blade length of 3.25”, the SharkBelly comes in both a partially serrated and a full fine edge version, we have been testing the later although the serrated version has “flat top” serrations for ease of resharpening, a critical aspect of knife ownership. Both versions weigh in at a paltry 2.3oz a piece making them barely noticeable in the carry position. The blade style is a sheep’s foot or “modern drop point” which we agree is aesthetically pleasing and also very practical for cutting and chopping, tasks that you will generally be looking to do with an EDC knife, (This isn’t a “fighting” knife and stabbing and piecing is not the aim of the game). The blade is deep along the full length as opposed to coming to a find point which can prove to be a weak spot. The handle features directional texturing like that of a shark’s underside, to give the blade a solid and positive feel in the hand. The contour of the handle gives positive safe control and texturing on the back edge of the handle (part of the lock mechanism) adds to the feeling of security when in use.

Speaking if the locking mechanism, the SharkBelly uses a solid and secure spring loaded lever inside the one piece handle that pivots around a pin to fix the blade in the open position. The lever spring is heavy enough to require deliberate action to unfold and fold the knife between positions and a spring detent gives the knife a little resistance to prevent losing control of the blade during this motion. Given the slimline nature of the knife and the composite materials used, the SharkBelly is remarkably solid in all direction at the hinge where we initially expected quite a bit of flex. Other features include a wire clip to carry the blade securely in a tip-down position. The clip is lightweight, low profile, will minimise damage to upholstery and furniture and is also very friendly to the edge of your pockets, where some knives will eat away at the fabric quickly. The Sharkbelly also features an enlarged thumbhole on the blade to assist in opening in all conditions and also a hole in the handle allows for a thin lanyard to be connected.

GERBER’S SHARKBELLY IS ASTOUNDINGLY COST EFFECTIVE, ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING IT IS MADE IN THE USA. ON TOP OF THIS, IT’S ACTUALLY REMARKABLY ROBUST FOR SOMETHING SO LIGHTWEIGHT AND SLIMLINE... THE CLEVER USE OF MATERIALS MEANS THAT CHEAP DOESN’T HAVE TO MEAN A COMPROMISE ANYMORE! As with all Gerber Gear blades, the SharkBelly comes with a razor sharp factory edge. Sharpening should be a simple affair thanks to the 420HC steel blade with a satin finish, this will ensure that the knife will stay effective and presentable even when used consistently and continually over time. The SharkBelly isn’t an exclusive, collector’s blade destined to stay in the drawer or on the shelf. it’s designed to be used, in the mud, rain and grittiness of the outdoors and it’s made to be taken home, cleaned down, sharpened up and taken back for more. If you want an inexpensive but dependable working tool, this is a folding knife that’s well worth a second look. You won’t even be able to feel the light weight of it in your carry pocket but when you need it, you’ll be glad it is there.
