DOWN

Down gets a 10/10 score on warmth to weight ratio, is the best insulation material, and it provides the best volume when packing as opposed to synthetics and wool. Down insulates by trapping air and is prized for being light, easy to compress, long-lasting and breathable. As opposed to what many people believe, down is the plumage that’s found underneath the exterior feathers on a goose and consists of soft, fluffy, wispy filaments. A downside to down as a fill material is that if it’s exposed to excessive moisture or water over a longer period of time, it doesn’t deal with moisture well. When down gets wet it clumps and collapses as the filaments will stick to each other. This makes the drying process very time consuming and difficult compared to synthetic fill. It’s worth mentioning that from natures side down clusters are naturally water repellant – if the down is treated properly during processing, washing etc. it will withstand moisture in the long run.

SYNTHETICS

Synthetics provide good insulation up to a certain thickness before the materials themselves become a limitation; The weight compresses the air and makes the bags colder, and volume gets disproportionately high when packing. Synthetic fill is quick-drying and insulates even if wet, better than down, and provides an acceptable warmth to weight ratio. Another upside to using synthetics as insulation is that it is cheaper than down insulation, as well as being more durable and hypoallergenic. While out on missions and while being exposed to the elements, synthetics are far easier to care for an maintain than down. Halite have chosen to incorporate both into its design. The down bag is made of a Gore Infinium outer fabric while the synthetic fabric is created with Climashield APEX. This has allowed Halite to achieve a close to zero dew point, thanks to the bags making use of extremely breathable and hydrophobic materials. This leads to moisture being transported out and squeezed from the inner bag to the Overbag Pro – an outer bag made from Climashield APEX, known to be one of the warmest hydrophobic insulation materials in the world. MOISTURE TRANSPORT

Dew point – a key word when talking about sleeping bags. The dew point determines whether the moisture from a person is taken up by the material, or if it is transported away to become steam, water or ice. This is a known phenomenon and can be observed in the form of condensation on the outer fabric of a bag, or worst case – inside the bag itself.

CHALLENGES WITH CONDENSATION MAY ALSO COME FROM ONE’S OWN SURROUNDINGS; TENTS ETC. THE KEY IS THE RIGHT CHOICE OF OUTER AND INNER FABRICS THAT ARE ABLE TO GRADUALLY VENTILATE THE MOISTURE FROM INSIDE THE BAG AND ONTO THE BAG’S OUTER FABRIC WHERE IT CAN DRY. Your worst case scenario is that the moisture gets trapped inside the bag and freezes over – so what Halite have done is move the entire dew point to the outside of the bag, by introducing what they’ve dubbed an ‘Overbag’. This is designed to sit as far away from the primary bag as possible. Check out page 15.

LEGACY The Tasmanishe Tiger – also known as the Tasmanian Wolf – was the largest carnivorous marsupial on the Australian continent. It was about the size of a small wolf and owes its name “TASMANIAN TIGER” to its striped coat which served as camouflage. The animal was a predator – not very fast but extremely persevering – and followed up on its prey at night, chasing it down until it was exhausted so it could finally snatch it. Equipped with a superior set of teeth and a mouth which it could open up to 180 degrees, the animal showed no mercy for its prey. The Tasmanian Tiger is said to be extinct on the Australian continent since the 1930s; the last species lived on the island of Tasmania. In 1966, a large sanctuary for animals had been opened so as to provide them with a retreat area, and to preserve the species in this way. Until today, no Tasmanian Tiger has any longer been sighted, but quite a few people believe that the animal has managed to survive in this sanctuary, having escaped discovery until today… In this mythical legend, the specific attributes of the animal – will to survive, hunting instinct, perfect camouflage, cleverness, strength and perseverance – manifest itself. These attributes have prompted the company to give their products the name Tasmanian Tiger.

FCS13RE The FCS system is a Direct View Optic (DVO) that consists of an eye safe (class 1) 1550 nm Laser Range Finder, a ballistic computer with the capability to store more than 50 different ballistic algorithms, and a very near parallax free optical channel with unlimited eye relief. Throughout history, conflicts have taken place in some of the harshest environments known to mankind, and some products simply are not cut out to withstand the myriad of abuse operators often come accustomed to. In 1974, a small group of Swedish entrepreneurs started exploring ways to improve shooting accuracy, and in turn, produce a product that stood up to the environments operators found themselves in. Over time, their project grew into a product range that more than three-million end-users place their faith in - oftentimes when their lives depend on the equipment they use. An Aimpoint® sight gives you a tremendous advantage – aiming with both eyes open allows you to see the target as well as the surroundings. You instinctively place the red dot on the target, and you’re ready to pull the trigger. The mechanical switch allows the shooter to get the right setting rapidly while aiming through the sight. Aimpoint also design their products to operate constantly for years on a single battery so your sight will be ready when you are.

The FCS automatically compensates for the ballistic drop of projectiles at measured distances, factoring in variables such as rotational (spin) drift, propellant temperature and terrain angle. The system will also allow the engagement of moving targets and calculates the point of aim depending on speed of the target dynamically. When the distance is measured the ballistic is calculated and compensated immediately. The aiming reticule changes position in the optical channel electronically and very quickly. Neither motors nor sensitive moving parts are used within the system. If ammunition type is changed, the ballistic algorithm is entered and utilized automatically, so no new distance measurement is required. The Aimpoint FCS system can also be programmed for 40 mm HV airburst ammunition. The detonation can easily be moved along the axis of fire with different burst modes – string of pearls, to engage targets in defilade.

RESEARCHERS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST DISCOVERED HOW TO MAKE MATERIALS THAT SNAP AND RESET THEMSELVES, ONLY RELYING UPON ENERGY FLOW FROM THEIR ENVIRONMENT. THIS RESEARCH, PUBLISHED IN NATURE MATERIALS AND FUNDED BY THE U.S. ARMY, COULD ENABLE FUTURE MILITARY ROBOTS TO MOVE FROM THEIR OWN ENERGY. “This work is part of a larger multi-disciplinary effort that seeks to understand biological and engineered impulsive systems that will lay the foundations for scalable methods for generating forces for mechanical action and energy storing structures and materials,” said Dr. Ralph Anthenien, branch chief, Army Research Office, an element of the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command, now known as DEVCOM, Army Research Laboratory. “The work will have myriad possible future applications in actuation and motive systems for the Army and DOD.” Researchers uncovered the physics during a mundane experiment that involved watching a gel strip dry. The researchers observed that when the long, elastic gel strip lost internal liquid due to evaporation, the strip moved. Most movements were slow, but every so often, they sped up. These faster movements were snap instabilities that continued to occur as the liquid evaporated further. Additional studies revealed that the

shape of the material mattered, and that the strips could reset themselves to continue their movements. “Many plants and animals, especially small ones, use special parts that act like springs and latches to help them move really fast, much faster than animals with muscles alone,” said Dr. Al Crosby, a professor of polymer science and engineering in the College of Natural Sciences, UMass Amherst. “Plants like the Venus flytraps are good examples of this kind of movement, as are grasshoppers and trap-jaw ants in the animal world.” Snap instabilities are one way that nature combines a spring and a latch and are increasingly used to create fast movements in small robots and other devices as well as toys like rubber poppers. “However, most of these snapping devices need a motor or a human hand to keep moving,” Crosby said. “With this discovery, there could be various applications that won’t require batteries or motors to fuel movement.”

After learning the essential physics from the drying strips, the team experimented with different shapes to find the ones most likely to react in expected ways, and that would move repeatedly without any motors or hands resetting them. The team even showed that the reshaped strips could do work, such as climb a set of stairs on their own. “These lessons demonstrate how materials can generate powerful movement by harnessing interactions with their environment, such as through evaporation, and they are important for designing new robots, especially at small sizes where it’s difficult to have motors, batteries, or other energy sources,” Crosby said.

XT1C

The XT Compact Range, designated as ‘XTC’, is a range of compact tactical flashlights with a range of features to improve general usage. The range is headlined by two products – the XT1C and the XT2C, with a 3rd variant now available which is an updated version of the XT1C. Designed specifically for the Law Enforcement market, Klarus have ensured that the range has a plethora of features that aid the end-user in their ability to undertake their work. While Klarus are based in China, they have an extensive dealership network to aid their clientele, allowing the end-user to gain much needed advice on their entire range, and the XTC range is no different. Each product within the XTC range comes complete with a lanyard to ensure the end-user can keep it close at hand, and are all manufactured from some of the highest quality materials on the market.

XT1C

The XT1C is the very definition of compact. Coming in at a minute 47.5g, with a body measuring 85mm long by 23mm wide, the XT1C is one of the smallest products in the entire Klarus range. However, do not be fooled by its small size, as the XT1C is just as powerful as some of their larger products. Thanks to years of research and development, the XT1C provides an output of 700 lumens thanks to the CREE XP-L HI V3 LED bulb used. The XT1C also makes use of Klarus’ smart ITS temperature control system, which monitors the internal temperature of the XT1C and adjusts the output to protect the LEDs and internal components within the torch. Furthermore, the XT1C is waterproof with a rating of up to 2m, making it perfect for wetter environments.

XT1C – 2018 MODEL

The 2018 model of the XT1C takes the brilliance of the original XT1C and improves on it ten-fold. Making use of the CREE XP-L V6 LED, the updated version of the XT1C provides the end-user with 1000 lumens within an extremely small flashlight. While it is not as small as the original XT1C, the updated variant is still on the smaller side, weighing 56.1g with a body measuring 94mm long by 25mm. Furthermore, the updated XT1C makes use of Klarus’ patented Dual-Switch Tail Clip, which provides the end-user with an intuitive control system that offers three different settings. The updated variant of the XT1C also shows the end-user how much charge the flashlight has through an easy to decipher LED system, showing four different colours to let the end-user know how much light they have in their hands.
