In Greek, “Alpha” was the first letter of the alphabet and in English, it’s used to denote the first, the primary, the highest ranking or the strongest. It is fitting then that world-leading tactical garment manufacturers title their flagship products the “Alpha” range. Comprising of a jacket and pants, when used in combination this precision-engineered system provides you with an impenetrable defence against the elements. Something that Mother Nature herself must be thinking twice about taking on. Like much of the Arc’teryx LEAF range, the Alpha line-up is an evolution of the company’s civilian and sporting clothing. Every garment is developed and born into the hardest of environments, clinging to a rocky outcrop where one slip could have dire consequences. In that setting, the Alpha Jacket is touted as the toughest and most durable item of clothing, designed specifically for the needs of climbers and alpinists. Their signature perfection and high attention to detail isn’t just something that’s nice to have, it’s a necessity. Because of this harsh and demanding premise, the transition to the LEAF range was a natural one. From the toughest environments on earth to the toughest warriors, the LEAF range is hand-picked and tweaked to the needs of Law Enforcements and Armed Forces members and the Alpha range is the hardest of the lot.

From the very beginning, the Alpha jacket has been engineered to protect the wearer from storms, rain and snow in a lightweight, compact garment that is still tough enough to withstand the rigours of everyday use in a tactical or challenging environment. Like the entire Arc’teryx range, the jacket uses an articulated and active cut made for mobility and comfort when physically active. As an outer shell, the Alpha has been designed with layering in mind, therefore it has a larger, roomier design to cover and protect insulating mid-layers from the elements. In 2014 the LEAF Alpha Jacket saw a range of revisions with a new, lighter and more refined construction. The cut is longer to provide better protection from the elements during active use and there are fewer seams are required meaning less points that water and wind can penetrate, those that are needed are taped on the inside to seal them. Compared to the previous Gen. 1 version of the Alpha jacket, this seam taping is finer and more precise, again cutting down on unnecessary weight and bulk. Instead of purely sewn-in zippers, where possible Arc’teryx’s engineers have adhesive bonded them in place lowering their profile and providing a totally watertight seal. Finer details like media ports inside the pockets on the chest make the Alpha compatible with a plethora of electronic equipment or media devices, making routing communications easy and flexible. A design feature that is directly influenced by use ‘on the ground’ is the internally routed drawcord hem system, eliminating external toggles or shock cord and minimising the risk of interference with duty belts, holsters and most importantly triggers.

The Micro Fight Chest Rig was designed to fill the need for load baring capabilities in a low-visibility package. Following a number of examples, Spiritus Systems’ have now released their fourth variant of the Micro Fight Chest Rig. The system is built around the Micro Fight Chassis, a 5” by 9” ‘Placard’ that is designed to be an extremely versatile chest rig that offers the end user a system that can both operate as a standalone system as well as part of a plate carrier via the use of quick-release buckles located on the upper corners of the Micro Fight Chest Rig and hard loop Velcro located on the back. In the Micro Fight Chest Rig, Spiritus Systems’ have created a highly expandable system with a wide range of accessories created to compliment the Micro Fight Chassis. This allows the end user to constantly adapt dependant on operational requirements, making use of the various different attachments the Micro Fight Chest Rig has to offer. Examples include rifle and pistol Magazines, 37/40mm grenades, flash-bangs, multi-tools, flashlights, medical supplies, and breaching equipment. This expandability has become one of the major selling points of the Micro Fight, and the variation is impressive. With the ability to switch in different accessories in a hurry, the end user can quickly change the configuration of the Micro Fight Chest Rig, making it the perfect Jack of all trades.

The Micro Fight Chest Rig gives the end user the choice of two different harness options - the ‘Fat Strap’ and the ‘Skinny Strap’. These allow for different levels of concealment as well as comfort.

Inside the Micro Fight Chassis, the end user is able to store an assortment of magazine inserts in two different sections, allowing for a large number of different magazine types to be held while on operational duty.

An innovative system allows the front of the two pockets to be adjusted in a number of ways dependant on the needs of the end user. This pocket can either be covered up to provide a storage section or used as another magazine section.

The Micro Fight Chest Rig makes use of quick-release buckles allowing it to be attached to a plate carrier, allowing the end user to easily transition from being a standalone chest rig to a plate carrier placard.

While great onus is placed on the ability to carry equipment into battle via devices such as plate carriers and rucksacks, very little seems to be placed on the equipment that you use to carry equipment to the battlefield. By this we’re specifically talking about products such as Pelican’s range of hard cases, or in this case, a kitbag. The concept of a kitbag is by no means a new, or difficult one. Essentially, a kitbag is just a bag, albeit usually on the bigger size, used to carry equipment to where it needs to be. Fairly straightforward. However, that is not to say that all kitbags were created equally, because that most certainly is not the case.

The Storm Kitbag from Highlander Outdoors is a tough, dependable hold-all, designed for transporting a plethora of equipment. Available in five different sizes (120l, 90l, 65l, 45l and 30l), the Storm Kitbag is manufactured from a water-resistant tarpaulin to ensure the end-users’ equipment is protected during light periods of rainfall. US SOLAR MATERIAL KEY TO CREATING CLEAN DRINKABLE WATER PROVIDING CLEAN WATER TO SOLDIERS IN THE FIELD AND CITIZENS AROUND THE WORLD IS ESSENTIAL, AND YET IT REMAINS ONE OF THE WORLD’S GREATEST CHALLENGES. NOW A NEW SUPER-WICKING AND SUPER-LIGHT-ABSORBING ALUMINIUM MATERIAL DEVELOPED WITH ARMY FUNDING COULD COMPLETELY CHANGE THAT. With funding from the Army Research Office, an element of the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command’s Army Research Laboratory, researchers at the University of Rochester have developed a new aluminum panel that more efficiently concentrates solar energy to evaporate and purify contaminated water. “The Army and its warfighters run on water, so there is particular interest in basic materials research that could lead to advanced technologies for generating drinking water,” said Dr. Evan Runnerstrom, program manager at ARO. “The combined super-wicking and light-absorbing properties of these aluminum surfaces may enable passive or low-power water purification to better sustain the warfighter in the field.”

The researchers developed a laser processing technology that turns regular aluminum pitch black, making it highly absorptive, as well as super-wicking (it wicks water uphill against gravity). They then applied this super absorptive and super-wicking aluminum for this solar water purification. The technology featured in Nature Sustainability, uses a burst of femtosecond (ultrashort) laser pulses to etch the surface of a normal sheet of aluminum. When the aluminum panel is dipped in water at an angle facing the sun, it draws a thin film of water upwards over the metal’s surface. At the same time, the blackened surface retains nearly 100-percent of the energy it absorbs from the sun to quickly heat the water. Finally, the wicking surface structures change the inter-molecular bonds of the water, increasing the efficiency of the evaporation process even further. “These three things together enable the technology to operate better than an ideal device at 100 percent efficiency,” said Professor Chunlei Guo, professor of optics at University of Rochester. “This is a simple, durable, inexpensive way to address the global water crisis, especially in developing nations.” Experiments by the lab show that the method reduces the presence of all common contaminants, such as detergent, dyes, urine, heavy metals and glycerin, to safe levels for drinking.

The technology could also be useful in developed countries for relieving water shortages in drought-stricken areas, and for water desalinization projects, Guo said.

USING SUNLIGHT TO BOIL HAS LONG BEEN RECOGNIZED AS A WAY TO ELIMINATE MICROBIAL PATHOGENS AND REDUCE DEATHS FROM DIARRHEAL INFECTIONS, BUT BOILING WATER DOES NOT ELIMINATE HEAVY METALS AND OTHER CONTAMINANTS. Solar-based water purification; however, can greatly reduce these contaminants because nearly all the impurities are left behind when the evaporating water becomes gaseous and then condenses and gets collected. The most common method of solar-based water evaporation is volume heating, in which a large volume of water is heated but only the top layer can evaporate. This is obviously inefficient, Guo said, because only a small fraction of the heating energy gets used. A more efficient approach, called interfacial heating, places floating, multi-layered absorbing and wicking materials on top of the water, so that only water near the surface needs to be heated. But the available materials all have to float horizontally on top of the water and cannot face the sun directly. Furthermore, the available wicking materials become quickly clogged with contaminants left behind after evaporation, requiring frequent replacement of the materials. The aluminum panel the researchers developed avoids these difficulties by pulling a thin layer of water out of the reservoir and directly onto the solar absorber surface for heating and evaporation. “Moreover, because we use an open-grooved surface, it is very easy to clean by simply spraying it,” Guo said. “The biggest advantage is that the angle of the panels can be continuously adjusted to directly face the sun as it rises and then moves across the sky before setting – maximizing energy absorption.” The Army and Guo are exploring transition opportunities to further develop this technology within DOD laboratories and private industry. In addition to the Army, this research received funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the National Science Foundation.

HELIO PRESSURE SHOWER

The idea of NEMO was born one turbulent night on the side of Mount Washington while Cam Brensinger spent a sleepless five hours in a poorly designed bivy. That night he realised how much opportunity there was for thoughtful design as part of the equation of enjoying adventure. And, coming down off the mountain the next day, he resolved to tackle that challenge. Three days after graduation from Rhode Island School of Design, he founded NEMO Equipment. The name – New England Mountain Equipment – is a tribute to their New England roots and a nod to Jules Verne’s Captain Nemo. NEMO continue to actively live out the belief that intelligently designed gear enables the adventures that make us all our best selves – humans who are conscious, inspired, connected and mindful. The sticker in their conference room captures their ethos: “Design Like You Give a Damn.” And NEMO endeavour to do just that, driven by a mantra to never bring anything to market that doesn’t offer a meaningfully better experience than what’s already out there.

Maintaining personal hygiene while on operations can be a difficult task. While the majority of large bases will have purpose built shower units, members of long range patrol contingents and those who are operating from Forward Observation Bases won’t have the same luxuries. Instead the majority of those that fall into said categories rely on a mixture of wet wipes and natural water sources, and while hygiene may not be the first, or most important factor while on operational duty, it is definitely a factor. However, that needn’t be the case, and the Helio™ Pressure Shower is a prime example of why. Unlike gravity camp showers that need to be hung overhead and produce dismal water pressure, Helio™ rests securely on the ground and delivers the pressure you need. You can quickly and easily pressurize the 2.9-gallon tank with a foot pump – and with occasional pumps you can keep it fully pressurized for 5-7 minutes of strong, continuous spray. The tank cannot be over-inflated. Unlike other pressurized showers, Helio™ can be refilled anywhere, even without a hose. The Helio™ Pressure Shower has also undergone some recent changes as well, with the tank now being orientated on its side as opposed to its bottom, providing a much greater level of stability. These changes are currently in the design stage though, and will see implementation by 2020.

The Helio™ Pressure Shower makes use of a generous 2.9 gallon (11 litre) tank, allowing for multiple uses from a single tank.

Unlike gravity showers, the Helio™ Pressure Shower makes use of a foot pump to provide up to seven minutes of pressure.

Thanks to its design, the Helio™ Pressure Shower can be warmed up easily in warm climates thanks to the black material used.

The Helio™ Pressure Shower comes complete with a compact ventilated carrying case stows tank, hose, nozzle, and pump neatly.

For ultimate privacy, the Helio™ Pressure Shower can be paired with the Heliopolis™ privacy shelter.
