Viper Tactical have been involved in the military and outdoor markets for over a decade, and now offer a range of expertise within the field; combining the experience, knowledge and resources that a decade worth of feedback has offered. In doing so, they have now reached a point in which they can offer a fantastic product range that is manufactured from a range of high-quality materials, and most importantly, doing so in a cost-effective way to offer products at a competitive price-point. Having been constantly evolving their product brand year on year, Viper Tactical have been able to stay up to date with the market, ensuring their products are compatible with the latest in military developments, such as their proprietary V-Cam camouflage that colour matches to MultiCam perfectly.

VENOM BOOT Previously we mentioned that until now, Viper Tactical had offered cost-effective alternatives to their more expensive counterparts. However, with the recent release of the new Venom Boot, that may well have changed, and Viper Tactical may have released a product that can stand head-to-head with the competitors. The Viper Venom Boot brings comfort, performance and fresh design together to give you the best experience while trekking, hiking or performing any tactical tasks. Years of experience in boot production taught them that a good pair of lightweight boots go a long way. To provide support for the end-users feet the boots have been designed using internal nylon stabiliser shank, moulded TPU heel stabiliser and integrated EVA midsole. This combined technology helps to tackle

rough and uneven ground. To further extend the performance of the boots, Viper Tactical have used an aggressive rubber outsole with multidirectional grip to help reduce the possibility of slipping on wet terrain. The Viper Tactical Venom Boot is manufactured from a range of high-quality materials, including the use of a 1000-denier Cordura material on the upper, providing unrivalled protection when put under constant use. Furthermore, a moisture wicking lining ensures that the end-user doesn’t find any annoying rubbing due to the build up of sweat.
OUR OPINION While we tend to keep our opinions to the Gear Up website, where we put a range of products under a strenuous long-term test period (which can be found on www.gearup-mag.com), we thought having put the Venom Boot to use for an extended period of time, a personal outlook may aid the feature. In the past, we have gone through a range of tactical boots from brands such as AKU, Oakley SI, Magnum and Lowa, and we can wholeheartedly say that while the Venom Boot doesn’t have all of the bells and whistles that the aforementioned brands offer, they are above all else, a solid tactical boot. Unlike a number of boots, there didn’t seem to be a breaking-in period, and they were comfortable from the off-set, albeit a little stiff through the first two-weeks or so. Our Editor, Connor, has the benefit of living within touching distance of the Peak District, and having taken the Venom Boot up into the Peaks, was impressed by their performance, he had this to say. “Viper Tactical have long been on the radar of Ebcon Publishing, with both companies having done a large amount of work with each other in the past. We’ve always been surprised by the quality of their products in relation to their price-point, and we knew sooner rather than later they would strike gold with a product – and that product has just hit the shelves. The Venom Boot is a solid tactical boot, which offer support in all the right places in a comfortable design. While the Venom Boot doesn’t offer the benefits of a Vibram sole or a GORE-TEX lining, it is a more than capable tactical boot for a range of environments, and at the price point the Venom Boot is available for, it is a great mid-level boot that will endure whatever you throw at it.”

PLATEMINUS V4 Blue Force Gear burst onto the tactical market in 2004 with a range of innovative products that revolutionised load carriage and weapon carrying capabilities. Instead of sticking to age-old design standards followed within the market, they design by what they refer to as a ‘code of advancement’, which has seen the company look towards the current market, highlighting areas in which they believe they can re-develop and improve an existing product type. This process has seen Blue Force Gear become a tour de force within the market, re-inventing a range of different product categories. With innovation at the heart of Blue Force Gear, it is no surprise that they have invented a range of new technologies to enable such a vision. In Issue 6 of Gear Up Magazine, we were lucky enough to bring you the UK exclusive on Blue Force Gear’s PLATEminus™ V3; a streamlined plate carrier that makes use of Blue Force Gear’s proprietary MOLLEminus system. When we received the PLATEminus V3, we were also lucky enough to receive a sample of the PLATEminus™ V4 as well; a more robust take on the already popular PLATEminus™ platform. The PLATEminus V4 is again a refinement of the PLATEminus platform, sharing certain similarities to the PLATEminus™ V2; which added a cummerbund and side pockets to the original PLATEminus platform. The PLATEminus V4 does exactly the same, offering the end-user more MOLLE real estate through the inclusion of a pair of 6”x6” side plate pockets, lined with Blue Force Gear’s MOLLEminus technology, as well as a cummerbund. This provides a fully modular system while significantly reducing the weight and bulk that is traditionally seen with other systems. To provide protection, the PLATEminus V4 is built to hold SAPI/ESAPI armoured plates, providing fully enclosed plate pockets which protect the plates and reduce and potential failures. Furthermore, the PLATEminus V4 provides maximum signature management by eliminating the ability to see any black plates stored within the system – which also allows the end-user to cut out the use of plate ‘socks’.

The panel itself has side openings on the left and right to store paperwork or maps, making them very easy to access. Furthermore, the rig also features a hook fastened panel on the back side for easy integration onto many plate carrier systems as a placard. For ease of transportation, the AO Chest Rig comes complete with a carry handle; sewn into the top of the panel to allow the end-user to transport it quickly in a grab-and-go situation. Unlike a range of chest rigs, the AO Chest Rig comes complete with HSGI’s Small H-Harness, which allows the weight to be distributed evenly and creates a level of comfort over and above the X-backed shoulder straps found on most smaller chest rigs.

HYDRATION POUCHES
Living by their slogan ‘innovate or die’, Tyr Tactical are a veteran owned tactical gear company that originally specialised in the production of high-quality body armour for the modern warfighter. Over time, those expertise have spread into other sectors of the tactical gear market, and they now produce products over ten different categories, ranging from ballistic shields through to military K9 accessories; all of which are highly regarded in their respective sectors. This feat has been made possible through the utilisation of high quality textiles and extensive field testing. Following a highly successful half-decade; spanning from their founding date to 2015, Tyr Tactical have grown exponentially. Boasting two state-of-the-art facilities in Arizona and Ontario, each hosting an elite team of scientists, designers and sewing professionals, Tyr Tactical are a force to be reckoned with. Staying true to their veteran-owned roots, Tyr Tactical are fully committed to innovating the tactical gear market, and in turn advancing the performance of operators around the world.

It is no secret that staying hydrated no matter what walk of life you follow is important. If food is seen as the fuel your body needs to function, then water is equally, if not more important to function at the height of physical performance. While water is easily accessible in most walks of life in first-world countries, with a kitchen tap or a supermarket within touching distance, the same cannot be said when individuals are deployed to the various countries armed forces contingents operate in. To counter this, individuals will tend to carry some form of water carrying device, from older methods such as the simple canteen, through to newer examples such as Qore Performance’s brilliant water delivery system (see Issue 7 for a look on Qore Performance’s water delivery products). In between these two examples sits two other examples that have been utilised for an extended period of time – the Nalgene bottle and hydration bladders. Both of these examples require some form of storage pouch to carry them into battle, with a plethora of options available to the modern warfighter. Most of these tend to be some form of MOLLE pouch, coming in varying sizes and offering the end-user with a method to ensure they stay hydrated while pushing their bodies to the limits required while deployed overseas or partaking in training exercises.

PADDED AGB SLEEVE LOW PROFILE
In 2010, FirstSpear® emerged from a bloodline of industry innovation; founded by a team of experienced industry professionals and former U.S. servicemen with a mandate to shift industry paradigms and upend the status quo. With such an ambitious mandate, branding was key for the founding members of FirstSpear, choosing to make use of the direct translation of ‘Primus Pilus’; the Senior Centurion of a Roman Legion those willing to serve and sacrifice everything for the glory of Rome. And likewise, FirstSpear look to serve those at the tip of the spear, ensuring they can operate in service of their country. FirstSpear employs a methodology that integrates evolutionary design with advanced material components, yielding improved performance and operational efficiency while delivering an invaluable reduction in weight on many platforms. The equipment put forth by FirstSpear is designed to function interactively as a fighting system. By utilising the equipment as a system, an overall weight reduction, weight transfer, and operational scalability is achieved that is far superior to competitor systems.
022
FirstSpear have a long history of creating high-quality equipment, and the Padded AGB Sleeve Low Profile is a fine example of this. Built to accompany FirstSpear’s highly popular Assaulters Gun Belt; a versatile riggers belt designed to handle the toughest situations, the Low Profile variant of the Padded AGB Sleeve is essentially a slimmer version of the previously released AGB Padded Sleeve, with the onus on cutting unnecessary bulk and weight while still offering the same high-quality product. the Low Profile sleeve provides a laser cut 6/12™ field to be placed on a belt. FirstSpear’s 6/12 technology essentially looks to significantly reduce the weight associated with older MOLLE systems, with the 6/12 technology eliminating a range of unnecessary components, achieving a 20-40% reduction in weight per standard Assaulters configuration. From adhesive heat-set backing to laser cut precision attachment points, the 6/12 system is a completely new, design-engineered solution that meets the need for modular, lightweight load-carriage platforms and pockets. Furthermore, every effort has gone into ensuring the Padded AGB Sleeve Low Profile is as comfortable as it can be. With a large amount of weight often placed upon battle-belts, FirstSpear have made use of a sizeable amount of padding around the whole belt. Moreover, this is coupled with a moisture-wicking mesh to ensure proper moisture distribution when the belt is in use.

022-023 FIRSTSPEAR.indd 22
04/02/2020 11:58
6/12 MODULAR POCKET TECHNOLOGY There are several philosophies on dealing with weight as it applies to load carriage. Some development has occurred in lightweight materials, but these tend to sacrifice performance. Other developments have taken place in “load transfer” by shifting weight around, but they reduce flexibility while increasing heat retention, bulk and even overall load. FirstSpear has taken a different approach. We listened to the Users and decided to eliminate the weight and sacrifice nothing. In the design assessment of current pouch attachment systems, FirstSpear recognized that the major weight parasite on both the platforms and the attaching pockets is the yards of bulk nylon, snaps and polymer stiffener. Modular Pockets Compatible with FirstSpear™ 6/12™ Platforms Weight reduction is not just a buzz phrase at FirstSpear - it is an ethos demonstrated by the 6/12™ pocket line. Utilizing these pockets on FirstSpear 6/12™ platforms allows the wearer to achieve a weight reduction of over 40% without sacrificing performance. By removing the heavy nylon webbing, polymer reinforcement and metal snaps of the previous system, not only is weight reduced, but the overall profile of the pocket on the platform is significantly condensed as well, allowing improved signature management in all visual, IR and thermal spectrums. Additionally, 6/12™ provides greater fabric flexibility on unarmoured platforms and tighter mounting of pockets to create a cleaner silhouette that aides in enhanced signature management and mobility. The 6/12 platform face is completely slick when pockets are removed and allows for easy management of communications cables and wires.

HISTORY CAN OFTEN BE MISINTERPRETED AS A SERIES OF BATTLES THAT FAVOUR THE SIDE WITH THE SUPERIOR NUMBERS, AND WHILE THERE ARE NUMEROUS EXAMPLES OF THIS, IT WOULD BE SIMPLER TO REFER TO THE VICTOR AS ONE WHO HAS GAINED AN ADVANTAGE OVER THEIR ENEMIES. AN ADVANTAGE IN NUMBERS, FOR EXAMPLE, OR IN WEAPONS, LOGISTICS, TECHNOLOGY… OR SIMPLY BY HAVING AN ADVANTAGEOUS POSITION. THIS IDEA IS WHAT GAVE BIRTH TO HIGH GROUND GEAR, WITH THE PRODUCTS OFFERED BY THE COMPANY GIVING THE END-USER THE ADVANTAGE ON THEIR OPFOR. W W W.GEARUP-MAG.COM

Located in Philadelphia, USA, High Ground Gear is the Tactical Systems branch of Ehmke Manufacturing, a company that have been producing products for the Aerospace, Defence, Industrial and Commercial markets since 1929. To allow for the best results, High Ground Gear’s technology has been directly influenced, and at times, created, by former operators, allowing High Ground Gear to bring a wealth of experience and innovation to the creation of their equipment.
RIGID-FRAME MODULAR TRAUMA PACK One thing we have noticed since first introducing our readership to High Ground Gear is that their product development is impressive to say the least. Most, if not all, of their product range push the boundaries of design, leading to a product range of unique equipment – something you

025-027 HGG.indd 26
cannot say about a lot of tactical gear manufacturers. The Rigid-Frame Modular Trauma Pack is a fine example of this ingenuity; combining the quality High Ground Gear have become renown for, while offering the end-user with something they simply cannot find elsewhere. High Ground Gear paint the Rigid-Frame Modular Trauma Pack as the answer to the combination of excellent weight distribution and the need for instant aid. Designed to enable the end-user to respond to large casualty scenarios such as IED explosions, the Rigid-Frame Modular Trauma Pack offers the end-user two large casualty pouches which can be removed from the frame in an instant. These pouches are definitely on the large side, making them perfect for those who need more medical equipment than your standard Individual First Aid Kit. Furthermore, the Rigid-Frame Modular Trauma Pack comes equipped with six modular trauma pouches to allow for perfect storage of medical equipment, an assault strap to allow for the attachment of blow-out kits and a quick-release waist belt system that offers great weight distribution properties.

The Rigid-Frame Modular Trauma Pack from High Ground Gear offers the end-user two large casualty pouches which can be removed in an instant thanks to the hook and loop attachment system.
1
The quick-release waist belt system found on the Rigid-Frame Modular Trauma Pack offers brilliant weight distribution, which is an absolute must for a product of this size. Furthermore, due to its quick-release nature, the end-user can don and doff the pack within seconds.
2
The Rigid-Frame Modular Trauma Pack comes packed to the rafters with a range of other features, including – an assault strap to allow the end-user to attach a blow-out kit, six modular trauma pouches and a drag/carry handle found towards the top of the pack.

4
A rather simple but effective feature that we are definitely a fan of is the ability to store important items on the side of each of the large casualty pouches. The pictures supplied here show a pair of medical shears to the side of the pouch, however they are large enough to fit an assortment of items such as glowsticks or small bandages.

ALPHA JACKET GEN 2
In Greek, “Alpha” was the first letter of the alphabet and in English, it’s used to denote the first, the primary, the highest ranking or the strongest. It is fitting then that world-leading tactical garment manufacturers title their flagship products the “Alpha” range. Comprising of a jacket and pants, when used in combination this precision-engineered system provides you with an impenetrable defence against the elements. Something that Mother Nature herself must be thinking twice about taking on. Like much of the Arc’teryx LEAF range, the Alpha line-up is an evolution of the company’s civilian and sporting clothing. Every garment is developed and born into the hardest of environments, clinging to a rocky outcrop where one slip could have dire consequences. In that setting, the Alpha Jacket is touted as the toughest and most durable item of clothing, designed specifically for the needs of climbers and alpinists. Their signature perfection and high attention to detail isn’t just something that’s nice to have, it’s a necessity. Because of this harsh and demanding premise, the transition to the LEAF range was a natural one. From the toughest environments on earth to the toughest warriors, the LEAF range is hand-picked and tweaked to the needs of Law Enforcements and Armed Forces members and the Alpha range is the hardest of the lot.
030
From the very beginning, the Alpha jacket has been engineered to protect the wearer from storms, rain and snow in a lightweight, compact garment that is still tough enough to withstand the rigours of everyday use in a tactical or challenging environment. Like the entire Arc’teryx range, the jacket uses an articulated and active cut made for mobility and comfort when physically active. As an outer shell, the Alpha has been designed with layering in mind, therefore it has a larger, roomier design to cover and protect insulating mid-layers from the elements. In 2014 the LEAF Alpha Jacket saw a range of revisions with a new, lighter and more refined construction. The cut is longer to provide better protection from the elements during active use and there are fewer seams are required meaning less points that water and wind can penetrate, those that are needed are taped on the inside to seal them. Compared to the previous Gen. 1 version of the Alpha jacket, this seam taping is finer and more precise, again cutting down on unnecessary weight and bulk. Instead of purely sewn-in zippers, where possible Arc’teryx’s engineers have adhesive bonded them in place lowering their profile and providing a totally watertight seal. Finer details like media ports inside the pockets on the chest make the Alpha compatible with a plethora of electronic equipment or media devices, making routing communications easy and flexible. A design feature that is directly influenced by use ‘on the ground’ is the internally routed drawcord hem system, eliminating external toggles or shock cord and minimising the risk of interference with duty belts, holsters and most importantly triggers.

® Born in 1999 from the real-life experiences of serving Search and Rescue teams, Massif has since become a global giant in the tactical gear market, with a range of exceptional apparel aiming to bring the comfort and effectiveness of traditional tactical apparel to the world of fire-resistant clothing. Massif was founded following the experiences of one of the founding members of the company following his time serving as a Search and Rescue crew member in Wyoming. With the constant risk of flash fires, he often found himself donning fire-resistant gear that was found to be cumbersome, uncomfortable and heavily ineffective compared to similar non-FR equipment. Unhappy with the current examples on the market, he teamed up with another passionate visionary, and together the two launched Massif, with the intent of addressing the issues surrounding fire-resistant fabrics, which simply lacked the characteristics found in high-end outdoor apparel. Following the creation of the company, Massif began work on the research and development of cutting-edge fire-resistant materials. Teaming up with LA-based Antex, the two began to forge a relationship that would later lead to the acquisition of Massif by Antex/Matchmaster. This partnership has allowed Massif to formulate a range of products that combine innovative fire-resistant fabrics with original design features, with Massif now placing themselves at the forefront of the tactical gear market.

FLAMESTRETCH PULLOVER
If Massif® have proved anything to us since the launch of Gear Up Magazine, its that the company is highly versatile, creating a plethora of clothing that serve a variety of purposes. In between all of the high-quality flight suits and combat apparel sits their range of layering options; designed to work in unison with a range of other products under the Massif umbrella. Massif’s layering systems are split into three different categories – Cool Knit®, HotJohns® and Flamestretch®, of which offer light, mid and heavy layering options in that order. The Flamestretch range is the warmest of Massif’s layering options, offering the end-user a fully flame-resistant construction thanks to the proprietary fabric Massif have developed through years of research and development within the fabric world. Having spent an extended period of time with a range of their layering products, we can happily attest to the effectiveness of the entire range, however the Flamestretch Pullover sits at the precipice of technical layering. Designed to work in unison with Massif’s ‘Fire and Ice™’ layering system, the Flamestretch Pullover is a highly breathable insulating layer to be worn over products from the Cool Knit or HotJohns range, which traps heat to keep the end-user both warm and comfortable. With years of experience within the fire-resistant industry, Massif have enlisted the help of DuPont™, specifically utilising their Nomex® fibre into their uniforms. Nomex fibres carbonise and thicken when exposed to intense heat, creating a protective barrier that either reduces or completely prevents burn injuries, making it the perfect choice for a wide range of service personnel.

The Massif Flamestretch Pullover offers the end-user with a highly effective layering option that sits at the peak of technical layering. Designed to work as part of Massif’s ‘Fire and Ice™’ system, the Flamestretch Pullover is a highly breathable insulating layer, perfect for the coldest of environments.
1
To ensure the Flamestretch Pullover offers the best in comfort, Massif have ensured that the design mimics the technical greatness of the product. The Flamestretch Pullover incorporates a flat-seam construction, ensuring it does not cause any chafing issues when work in unison with other Massif products.
2
With a rich history within the technical fabric industry, Massif have worked tirelessly to ensure their products are some of the best examples, if not the best, on the market. And while the Flamestretch Pullover offers what is to expect of a Massif product, we are still amazed at the warmth-to-weight ratio on offer, weighing in at less that 100g.
3
To ensure that Massif are catering to both sexes, the entire Flamestretch® range is available in male and female variants, ensuring that both men and women within the various military and law-enforcement industries have access to the very best in flame resistant equipment.

Founded in 1996, NFM design and produce protective equipment that enables the end-user to operate at their full capacity during combat. Channelling their Scandinavian heritage; one that has seen many Scandinavian countries heralded for their expert craftsmanship, NFM products are designed with the user at the centre, ensuring that their products are ergonomic as opposed to overly complicated. This level of innovation has over time seen the company continuously implement a holistic and innovative approach to protecting their users, incorporating a structured approach to recognising innovations, testing ideas and then implementing them into an impressive product range. NFM currently have a workforce of over five-hundred employees, with offices scattered across Europe; ranging from production sites in Ukraine through to their own trading house, Equipnor, who ensure their products are supplied to the right people. With a wide range of different roles within NFM, the company pride themselves on only employing the most competent individuals within their specialist fields; ensuring that they respect their Scandinavian heritage; one which is known for some of the greatest Artisans the world has seen.
HJELM HELMET SYSTEM Scandinavian culture has a long history regarding helmet systems, with the Vikings being well-known to wear ‘Gjermundbu’ into battle – a crude helmet that was designed to intimidate the opponent, partly thanks to the spectacle-shaped face protection it offered. Over the years, Vikings
036
035-037 NFM.indd 36
showed great pride in their helmets, which were carefully preserved and passed down from generation of warrior to the next. NFM have looked to preserve the heritage passed down to them, creating a new helmet system for this generations’ warriors in the Hjelm Helmet System. Modern helmets can be traced back to World War I, with the French Army adopting steel helmets following a large number of lethal head wounds in 1915. Over the subsequent years, two further generations of helmets can be seen as the changing points in ballistic protection, with the second generation seeing the inclusion of Kevlar, and the third generation adapting to the need to attach equipment to it. With innovation at the heart of NFMs ethos, the Hjelm Helmet System is looking to cement itself as the fourth generation of protective solutions. The NFM HJELM helmet line was developed to be the first Generation IV ground infantry platform capable of integrating information technology while advancing protection from battlefield threats. The foundation for this system is an internal liner system that holds the helmet on the head comfortably and securely. It is coupled to a lightweight shell made from the highest grade of ballistic materials, and every gram of performance is optimized with state-of-the art processing techniques. What makes HJELM a truly Generation-IV helmet is the Edgemount™ with Helmet Attachment System Pattern (HASP). Unlike traditional rails and Velcro which have limited attachment options and added material to the outside of the helmet, independent of devices being attached or not, the Edgemount with HASP means technology can be integrated only where it is needed.
W W W.GEARUP-MAG.COM
04/02/2020 12:01
EDGEMOUNT ATTACHMENT SYSTEM Most Generation III helmets use a rail system for attaching accessory equipment like an illuminator, visor, or communications headset to the helmet. Rails are heavier and require more and material than is necessary when attaching fewer devices – which is often the case. NFM’s patented Edgemount Attachment System provides the flexibility to attach only the accessory equipment that is desired so if a solider only requires a torch for a particular mission, this is all the mounting hardware that is attached. The Edgemount Attachment System also provides the means for integrating wiring and connectors inside the helmet for Generation IV sensory enhancement technologies. This gives soldiers and technology manufacturers the flexibility to incorporate these devices in the optimal configuration for their function, while streamlining and protecting the cabling and connectors from being damaged or causing a snag hazard on the exterior of the helmet.
HASP SYSTEM Most helmets on the market today are covered with Velcro loop to fasten devices like ID patches, IFF devices, and cameras. The attachment strength of Velcro loop material degrades over time, especially with repeated use and environmental wear and tear, so that even Velcro attachment which may have been adequate when new can fail over time. The NFM HASP (Helmet Attachment System Pattern) replaces the Velcro loop with a structural web of high-strength composites that provide a stronger and more reliable system throughout the shell exterior. Devices can now be mechanically attached without fear of the connection failing. The HASP is also removable so that it is easily replaced even in the field if it does become damaged.

STANDARD ISSUE FLAK 2.0 BLACKSIDE
Oakley Standard Issue, more commonly known as Oakley SI, are a dedicated division of the widely renowned Oakley, Inc. Having worked continually with the United States Armed Forces in the 1980s, focusing on the development of new technologies that improve the safety, performance and comfort of the modern warfighter, Oakley Inc. saw fit to fund and launch a dedicated branch that was committed to serving the specific needs of the U.S. Military, government, Law Enforcement, Fire and EMS professionals - aiming to produce combat ready equipment for those whose lives depended on it. Since its birth, the Oakley SI range has continuously aimed to create new product ranges and experiment with new materials in a effort to stay ahead of the curve within the industry, driven by a cocktail of obsession and passion. These factors have allowed Oakley to offer an unprecedented level of optical clarity while maintaining ultimate levels of protection, as well as allowing Oakley to innovate within their field, constantly redefining the perception of performance eyewear.
038
Oakley’s Standard Issue Flak® 2.0 is a refinement of Oakley SI’s award-winning Flak silhouette. Oakley have pushed the proverbial boat out so to speak with the Flak 2.0, with a wide range of options available for purchase, all with a differing take on the Flak 2.0 – from the Desert Collection that offers the end-user with a sand coloured frame, to the XL Edition which offers enhanced lens coverage. With such a wide range of options, we have chosen to look specifically at the Flak 2.0 Blackside Collection. Satin Black frames with black icons give these sunglasses smooth, understated styling with a look of authority that complements any uniform. Black-on-black is also a salute to the warriors of stealth, and to finish the colour scheme with true performance, we added Prizm™ Black Polarized lenses. They block 99% of reflected glare with filtering that helps maintain your colour recognition, so you’ll have a sharp view of the enemy, target or suspect. Patented optics offer clarity at all angles of vision, even in the periphery of lens contours that improve side protection against sun, wind and impact. With High Definition Optics® in a ruggedly durable yet comfortably lightweight design, this semi-rimless slice of Oakley engineering takes performance to the next level and brings style along for the ride – showing the industry that style and function can work hand in hand, with the Flak 2.0 Blackside looking as comfortable on the shooting range as it is as a standard, everyday use option.

TRAINING PLATES Throughout history, individuals have aimed to replicate the strain they put on their body in the real-world while training. Dating as far back as military operations go, people would train in full suits of armour to simulate the strain their body would be subjected to, ensuring that they would not be left in a position where they would begin to struggle physically. The same can be said for training exercises in the modern world, where soldiers will often go on long exercises wearing a complete assortment of combat equipment to ensure that when they are deployed, they will not find themselves in a position where their body is not used to the strain placed upon it. However, while throughout ancient history individuals would be drilled daily while wearing the equipment they went to war in (or some semblance of equipment that mimicked it), the same cannot be
040

said for modern-day operators, with much of their equipment either locked away by Quartermasters, or simply not available due to various requirements placed upon either the individual or their equipment. Due to this, various items have been manufactured to offer individuals with the ability to replicate their battle weight. One such item that is often locked behind closed doors is ballistic plates. For what reason, we are not entirely sure, however from interactions with members of the British Armed Forces, ballistic plates at the very least aren’t allowed off-base, which causes an issue for those who live off-base and wish to continue training. With that in mind, numerous companies have created a range of training plates and different weights to enable the replication of a weighted plate carrier without the use of ballistic plates.

BEAVERFIT
ROGUE FITNESS
TRAVAIL FITNESS
BeaverFit’s plate system comes with two dual curve ESAPI (medium) sized steel plates that made from 8mm cut and shaped steel, which are cut to the exact dimensions as SAPI plates. While most plates are often flat, BeaverFit plates have been shaped to fit the natural curvature of the body; akin to real SAPI plates, ensuring the end-user’s training experience is the same as their real-world application. To offer the end-user with some variation, the BeaverFit Curved Weighted Plates come in either 7lb or 10lb. More interestingly, BeaverFit also offer 500g magazine inserts to further replicate the weight of a fully loaded plate carrier, which while it may seem a simple idea, is something we see very rarely from other companies.
Rogue’s exclusive Weight Vest Plates were designed for use with the 5.11 TacTec Plate Carrier, but they are also compatible with a wide range of other tactical training/ weighted vests on the market. Again, like the BeaverFit Curved Weighted Plates, the Rogue Fitness Vest Plates come in a variety of weights, ranging from 3.75lb through to 8.75lb. Each variant of these training plates is a slightly different size though, so ensure measurements are looked at before purchase. The Rogue Fitness Vest Plates are manufactured in the United States, making use of laser-cut steel to ensure the best in manufacturing quality. One disadvantage of the Rogue Fitness Vest Plates are their flat design, however at a fairly low price point, it is something that can on a whole be worked around.
Another UK-based company, Travail Fitness have an unbridled passion for quality that has been honed through 25-years’ experience within the aerospace sector. With this comes a level of precision unlike any other, and Travail Fitness proudly boast a range of training plates made from a range of different high-quality materials to ensure high-end quality matched with an affordable price-point. Their Multi Curve Training Plates range come in six different weights – 1.7kg, 3.2kg, 4.5kg, 5.45kg, 6.4kg and 9.1kg, giving the end-user a plethora of options to choose from. They are ergonomically curved to replicate SAPI/ESAPI plates and offer a neoprene backing to help spread the load via multiple points of contact. Furthermore they are powder coated to increase durability and come with a lifetime warranty.

Finding the perfect boot is often seen as the holy grail of the procurement world, with as many as 70% of soldiers sustaining an ankle or foot injury each year and is the biggest cause of time lost from either training exercise or operational duty. However, while a solid pair of boots goes a long way, they can only do so much – by which we mean that should you wear the perfect pair of boots with a pair of thin, everyday run-of-the-mill pair of socks, you will still likely find a plethora of issues arise such as severe rubbing or a build up of moisture inside the boot, leading to blisters and general discomfort. While a lot of this is avoided once a boot is ‘broken in’, logic dictates that breaking boots in is not a be-all, end-all solution to comfort while wearing boots – as after all, why would an individual spend time breaking in a boot to then pair it with a pair of socks that lead to the same discomfort the end-user is trying to avoid. When looking towards a pair of specialist socks, wool tends to be the material of choice. While cotton tends to be the more comfortable choice for socks, wool offers a range of features that cotton does not. For instance, the added insulation allows a wearer’s feet to lock in heat, even on the coldest of days. Considering that wearing boots causes a person’s feet to sweat a bit more than other types of footwear, the extra insulation also allows for the sweaty smell to take longer to reach the boot.

THE WORLD OF OPTICS IS OFTEN DOMINATED BY THE TRIFECTA OF AIMPOINT, EOTECH AND TRIJICON. THROUGH YEARS OF DEDICATION TO THE OPTICS MARKET, SAID COMPANIES HAVE CEMENTED THEMSELVES AT THE FOREFRONT OF THE MARKET, HOWEVER, THAT IS NOT TO SAY THAT THERE ARE NOT OTHER EXAMPLES ON THE MARKET THAT ARE EQUALLY AS GOOD, IF NOT BETTER. THIS MONTH WE LOOK TOWARDS GLOBAL RESPONSE DEFENSE OPTICS IN A SEARCH FOR EXACTLY THAT.

Global Response Defense may not have the years of experience that the trifecta of Aimpoint, EOTech or Trijicon, but they are by no means a new entity within the optics marketplace. With over three decades worth of experience, Global Response Defense have committed themselves to the research and development of sight solutions for small arms weaponry and light machine guns. In 1986, the company began its journey as a telescope company, providing a range of OEM services for a number of different corporate entities. Four years later, their experience within the OEM world led them to their goal of manufacturing optics for rifles and light machine guns. With a range of innovative technologies and a through building a number of trusted relationships, Global Response Defense have supplied products to a range of leading distributors throughout the United States, as well as Asia and Europe. Over the years, Global Response Defense have evolved entirely into a defense company, with a range of products available to both the military and civilian markets. In recent times, the company have received huge contracts from both NATO and the Defense Acquisition Program Administration of South Korea having been hand chosen from a number of applicants.

DCL OPTICS The DCL Series could be seen as the pièce de résistance of the Global Response Defense range, with the company receiving a number of large military contracts thanks to the superior build quality and technology funneled into the product range. The DCL Series provides a brilliant field of vision that enables the end-user to take aim rapidly with both eyes open, allowing observation of moving targets. The highlight of the DCL Series lies in its efficiency in target acquisition when used from a variety of vehicle platforms, which is in part due to the product range having a built-in trajectory compensation mechanism specific to different platforms. This allows the end-user to calibrate trajectory accurately, with Global Response Defense claiming the DCL Series allows for “one shot, one kill in its truest sense”. The DCL Series is broken into three different products. The DCL-100 is designed for use with Light Machine Guns. The DCL-110 is designed for use with Onboard Machine Guns and has seen use within various NATO vehicles in the last decade. Lastly, the DCL-120 is intended for use with Heavy Machine Guns.

Often seen as the father of modern-day close-quarters combat, William Fairbairn was once quoted to say – “The knife is a great morale builder. A man, without one, especially in the dark, is on the defensive. But, put a knife in his hand and it’s a different story. He is aggressive, confident, he has psychological support”. Throughout the ages, soldiers have been well-trained in the use of a combat knife, however, the age-old bayonet has slowly been phased out. While the modern warfighter will often take a knife into combat, the bayonet would allow the end-user to use his rifle while having the option of a knife without having to draw it; and when seconds can be the difference between life and death, having the ability to draw a close-quarters weapon in an instant can only be seen as a positive. Often overlooked, knives, when readily available, are one of the most dangerous weapons in the world when it comes to hand-to-hand combat, and within the realms of the military and law enforcement, many cases prove that while a rifle may be on a sling, it doesn’t mean it cannot be taken from them, and while a sidearm is usually holstered, it does not mean the end-user will have the time to draw it. For example, the 21-foot rule states that within a 21-feet distance, a person can deploy a knife and
050
close that 21-foot distance before a trained professional can unholster their firearm and fire an effective shot. Gripknife have taken this train of thought and looked at ways to implement a knife into the modern-day weapon, and through a period of research and development have invented what we can only call the world’s first alternative to the bayonet. Gripknife at its base is a simple idea, combining the tactical foregrip with a combat knife, and in doing so has filled a defensive gap at extremely close quarters that is often ignored on the modern battlefield. When looking towards the use of a knife, speed, accessibility and surprise are the key elements for deploying a knife successfully, and due to the ergonomics of a tactical grip, there is no place better to house a combat knife than where you find your hand placed when shouldering a rifle. Gripknife essentially houses a 4-inch blade within a foregrip, which is attached to a RIS rail via a simple attachment. From the shouldered position, drawing the Gripknife is simple thanks to its design – simply press a button and pull it out. Thought to be impossible by many, Gripknife is pushing the boundaries of what’s achievable in high-production precision machining and processes, here in America. Gripknife is achieving consistent and extremely precise results on very challenging parts, while using very tough “hard to work with” materials—and doing it all at an affordable price point in the premium out-the-front knife space. This, when combined with their new knife innovations and locking mechanisms, gives the end-user never-before-seen strength and reliability from an out-the-front knife.

GRIPKNIFE PATRIOT
Gripknife’s flagship Weapon System, the Gripknife Patriot, is currently their most rugged and heavy-duty model, and is the strongest OTF knife in the world. Precision machined in the U.S.A. using some of the highest quality materials in the industry, and then combined with some of the hardest, most durable, wear-resistant coatings and processes known, the Gripknife Patriot was made to perform in ways that other knives can’t. From functioning in some of the harshest and dirtiest environments, to being able to withstand extreme shock and other forces, Gripknife goes far beyond the point where the majority of collapsible knives fail. The Gripknife Patriot not only creates new limits for knife performance, it also offers an entirely new Weapon System that takes your defensive capabilities to another level.
GRIPKNIFE DEFENDER
The Gripknife Defender is the light-weight edition to the Gripknife Weapon Systems. It’s design is based off our strongest flagship model, the Gripknife Patriot. Like all of our products, the Gripknife Defender is precision machined using high quality materials and processes and Made In USA. Gripknife Defender—same great design, but lighter. The Gripknife weapon system is your foregrip and your combat knife in one. When entering a room in close quarters, no blade can be deployed and used faster than Gripknife; it’s only a fraction of a second. With training, the deployment can become a seamless instinctive strike that can be employed in the tightest of spaces. Whether it’s used for weapon retention, to eliminate a threat, or because it’s your last line of defense, Gripknife goes with you and is already in your hand when needed most.

XT1C
The XT1C is the very definition of compact. Coming in at a minute 47.5g, with a body measuring 85mm long by 23mm wide, the XT1C is one of the smallest products in the entire Klarus range. However, do not be fooled by its small size, as the XT1C is just as powerful as some of their larger products. Thanks to years of research and development, the XT1C provides an output of 700 lumens thanks to the CREE XP-L HI V3 LED bulb used. The XT1C also makes use of Klarus’ smart ITS temperature control system, which monitors the internal temperature of the XT1C and adjusts the output to protect the LEDs and internal components within the torch. Furthermore, the XT1C is waterproof with a rating of up to 2m, making it perfect for wetter environments.
XT1C – 2018 MODEL
The 2018 model of the XT1C takes the brilliance of the original XT1C and improves on it ten-fold. Making use of the CREE XP-L V6 LED, the updated version of the XT1C provides the end-user with 1000 lumens within an extremely small flashlight. While it is not as small as the original XT1C, the updated variant is still on the smaller side, weighing 56.1g with a body measuring 94mm long by 25mm. Furthermore, the updated XT1C makes use of Klarus’ patented Dual-Switch Tail Clip, which provides the end-user with an intuitive control system that offers three different settings. The updated variant of the XT1C also shows the end-user how much charge the flashlight has through an easy to decipher LED system, showing four different colours to let the end-user know how much light they have in their hands.

SLEEPING MATS
An essential part of any sleeping system, a mat is every bit as important as a good sleeping bag. Feeling strong and ready for a big day ahead requires good sleep, and a high-quality mat is more important than you might think. Stopping conductive heat loss, with the right insulating mat, so great can its impact be, that the use of a lighter-weight sleeping bag becomes possible. Founded in 1961, Mountain Equipment have participated in countless ascents of the world’s highest peaks, supported climbers establishing ever more adventurous routes and equipped world record setting trips to the North and South Poles. While Mountain Equipment is not a name synonymous with the Law Enforcement or Military circles, they most certainly understand the importance of top-quality equipment in adverse weather conditions, having been creating equipment for some of the most inhospitable places on the planet for over 50 years. In an effort to uphold their high manufacturing standards, Mountain Equipment joined forces with the Fair Wear Foundation, ensuring that the company offer fair working conditions worldwide. This ensures that their staff are working in great environments, leading to a great working atmosphere, accumulating in staff who consistently look to ensure Mountain Equipment’s high standards are upheld across the board. Mountain Equipment has been a member of FWF since 2012 and has developed a close partnership with FWF, working together with them continuously over the past 7 years.
056
While it may not always be feasible for operators across the globe to make use of a sleeping mat, either due to weight restrictions while working deep behind enemy lines or simply due to regulations which do not allow for their use while at Forward Operating Bases or training exercises, ensuring the end-user gets a good nights sleep while at larger bases such as Camp Bastion is imperative to the success of crucial missions – with the more well rested an individual is, the better they will perform in the long run. Furthermore, while said items may be a no-go for procurement teams due to various regulations in regards to sleeping apparatus, it is no secret that a large number of those serving within Law Enforcement or Military circles will lead very active lifestyles. With that in mind, you could do a lot worse than stocking equipment that appeals to this way of life, and as previously mentioned, ensuring the end-user can wake up recharged after a long day of exertion allows them to continue performing for days to come.

WINDSOCK 3 AEROSTAT MOUNTAIN EQUIPMENT

One of the biggest issues with sleeping mats is blowing them up. Much like a blow-up bed, sleeping mats require a small amount of air to provide maximum comfort, and if you have ever attempted to blow up either a bed or mat, you will know they can be annoying to say the least. To counter this, Mountain Equipment have spent numerous hours on the research and development of the Windsock, which they claim to be the best method they have found to inflate a sleeping mat. The Windsock offers rapid, easy, and reliable inflation without the need for heavy or gimmicky accessories. The Windsock™ works equally well whether in the thin air of the Himalaya or valley camping in the Alps.

AAJT-S ABDOMINAL AORTIC JUNCTIONAL TOURNIQUET The AAJT-S, or in its long form, the Abdominal Aortic Junctional Tourniquet, is if truth be told, unlike anything we have ever seen. While a number of our staff are trained within the world of first aid, this far outweighs any training they have had. The Abdominal Aortic and Junctional Tourniquet – Stabilized (AAJT-S) is the latest life-saving innovation for bleeding not amenable to standard tourniquet application. Building on the success of the AAJT, the AAJT-S features an easy to use tightening system and advanced materials with the goal of consistent, stable occlusion. The AAJT-S is indicated to control difficult bleeding in the primary junctional areas (inguinal and axillary) as well as the pelvis- the only product on the market to be approved for all three. In addition, it’s the only device to have documented lives saved from both upper and lower junctional hemorrhage. Device design and function facilitates a large area of effective occlusion pressure, which provides the medic with a high degree of accuracy and reliability for the positioning of the device in the proper anatomical locations to stop the bleeding. Moreover, the AAJT-S has demonstrated the ability to maintain efficacy during patient movement in confined space rescue, drags, and hasty extraction.
