Welcome to the 2017 Drake Bull Sale! 2017 has brought new challenges and new opportunities for cattlemen and cattlewomen across the country. Prices aren’t what they once were-less than the past few years but still substantially better than other years. Costs remain a constant battle. Changes in Washington might (or might not) stop, or at least slow, the relentless onslaught of regulations and government interference in our efforts to raise the best quality beef, in the most environmentally protective way possible, all while maintaining a living, and a way of life, for those that mean the most to us. We revel in the challenges and hope that you do too. As you go forward, the choice of the right bull for your operation becomes ever more important. Never in history have we had so much data to help in the selection of your bull. Our operations have always focused on the traits most important to the commercial cattlemen and women-ease of calving, growth and maternal performance and carcass. We have become believers in the American Simmental Association’s expected progeny differences (“EPDs”). If you have not done so we encourage you to begin to use this information, along with your visual analysis and other information, in selecting the right bull for you. We find that time and again the bulls with the highest EPDs for the various traits actually excel in those traits. The animals themselves, and their offspring, are expressing the excellence predicted. For an easy reference look for bulls with high API (all purpose) and TI (terminal-carcass) indexes. If you have any questions regarding EPDs please do not hesitate to contact any of us. As our focus is on the needs of the commercial cattlemen and women, we raise our cattle just like you do. We never creep feed our calves. Therefore you won’t find many 800-900 pound “fed-on” weaning weights. We want to know what our cows can do-not our grain. Study the bulls in this offering and you will find bulls that will provide small, vigorous calves that will grow and grade. You will also be able to keep the females out of these bulls-we breed for strong maternal traits. EPDs available sale day A few years back Dad, Flint and I ventured into the Angus business with our $25,000 purchase of Hotz Elsa 1207. This beauty of a female is sired by Brilliance and out of Cherry Knoll Elsa 8014, who was National Western Champion Angus Female in 2010. Full and maternal sisters to Hotz Elsa 1207 have won every major show in the U.S. including Louisville, Kansas City and Denver. 1207’s first calf was a Style heifer who is the dam of Drake American Class. 1207 has continued to have heifer calves and we’ve kept them all. Explanation of How to Utilize API and TI Indexes First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described to the left, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an allpurpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a $50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000).
