Another year has flown by as we are getting ready for 2014 sale day. The cattle market is now seeing unprecedented prices in all classes. With the decline in feed prices, the cow/calf producer should see record profits in 2014. We had plenty of rain last summer to recover from the 2012 drought. After weaning, the calves were developed on high roughage growing rations of CRP hay, alfalfa, distillers, and corn. This is a dry ration that adds muscle…not a wet ration that adds bulk & fat that melts away rapidly. Breds grazed cornstalks coming off pasture until the current date…they were supplemented a CRP hay, alfalfa, distillers ration starting in mid December. Most are safe to A.I. sires, and all are enrolled in ASA’s THE program…buyers will be able to register the offspring for free. In addition to being involved in the farm and 4-H, they are all very active in sports. Gage (16) had an excellent year in football, earned several post-season honors (despite two injuries) at defensive end and tight end, as the Warriors were ranked as high as 2nd in state…and lost a heartbreaker in the state quarter-finals. Two torn ankle ligaments have lingered during basketball season, but as he continues to heal, he is playing better and better. Shay (14) competed in all sports in school, excelling in her first year of track, and is now playing club basketball and volleyball. Tres (11) did well in 4-H, repeating as division champion in showmanship. He had a good year in sports as a leader in football, and led his baseball team to a coach-pitch championship and 2nd place in minors. Tres is a huge help with the cattle. Cole (10) also plays on all the same teams with Tres. Cole’s favorite sport is basketball, and both he and Tres are among the top scorers on their basketball team that is now 9-3. Teagan (9) is again having an exceptional year in school (any grade lower than a 97 is unacceptable to her) and she’s started her first year of USVBA club volleyball, which is her favorite sport. Her first softball team only had one loss. Terrick (6) is in Kindergarten this year, and does an excellent job; school is both easy and enjoyable for him. He also loves sports and was the batboy/waterboy for all of Tres and Cole’s teams. Thanks again to all of our partners and guest consigners for bringing your best to this sale. September 20th, 2013. As we were enthralled in a high school football game between #2 Fullerton and #3 Shelton, we got the news that Kyle had been in a bad car accident. At halftime, word came that Kyle didn’t make it. That was a punch to the gut that put life into perspective, for sure. God was totally in control, and He was making His calls. Kyle’s dad, Rick, and I grew up together and have been good friends for years…in fact he was the best man in our wedding. I’d known Kyle his whole life, of course. I always liked to tell the story that I gave Kyle his first haircut while his dad held him down, kicking and screaming! Kyle was a hardworking kid that earned everything he achieved. Quite honestly, Kyle often toed the line, occasionally finding a little trouble, but his intentions were always good. He had worked our sale for several years now, and we could always count on him to be here, hammer down and do a good job, and not leave until things were finished. His smile was pretty contagious, and he made the people around him have a good time. Those who know me know that I have a tendency to get overly serious occasionally, and Kyle was always one of the kids that would have words for me at those times….he had the ability to harass me, making me smile and shake my head….while he was grinning from ear to ear, proud of his wise-crack comment! It’s very hard and discouraging for me to see a life end so abruptly and early. I’m sure he is missed greatly by his family, just as we will miss him helping out around here. However, it is a somewhat of a solace to know that Kyle packed a lot of life in 20 short years. We certainly were glad he was around to inspire us with his wisdom and thoughts! I think he personified living life to the fullest. I’m guessing that he slid into heaven, sideways, saying “what a ride”! Rest in peace, Kyle.
