You’re Invited to theJewels of the Northland Sale 2015!

What a year this has been the Jewels of the Northland Group! Many wins, many changes and a new addition to our Jewels Family! Welcome to our 6th annual Sale! As you flip through this year’s catalog, we encourage you to take a long look at our winners page. We are extremely proud of our junior kids that have made us and those heifers look awesome throughout the year. Having the Champion Female in Louisville and Denver come through this sale shows what we as breeders are striving for. Each year, we have what our customers want in mind when we make mating decisions; ultimately to make good ones that turn around and produce offspring better then themselves. The group we have offered this year is stellar and with Simmental Junior Nationals being held in Des Moines next summer, our junior kids have an amazing set of all ages to pick from on both the purebred and percentage divisions. For our breeder customers, this set of bred heifers is the best we have put together yet with services to some of the best calving ease bulls in the breed. Around this time of year, we start getting asked hot button question by our customers; Which donor are you selling this year? Well folks, this year is special and we are opening up our donor battery up to not one but THREE of our main donors. This is a very rare opportunity and if you are in need of a new proven donor, take a look. The work is already done! Please take this, as your personal invitation to the sale! Everyone is welcome to come early to view the heifers, chat with the breeders and enjoy some warm Northland hospitality with some hearty soup and a sandwich. We invite all of you to our pre-sale social the night before as well for a taco bar and beverages. Back by popular demand, the sale will be ran by video auction in the warm comforts of the Hilbrands Cattle Company sale facility and LiveAuctions.TV will be on hand for internet bidding for those unable to attend. For those making the trip to Louisville this year, a number of the heifers on this year’s sale will be on display, so please stop by the stall to chat with us! Don’t hesitate to give any of us a call with questions about the offering; we would love to chat with you. We look forward to seeing everyone on December 5th in Clara City! Warm Regards,

Hilbrands Cattle Company

I first saw What A Girl in a Griswold ad in the Show Circuit and knew at that moment she needed to be the next female we added to our donor program. A SimAngus™ female with a killer look and unmatched internal dimension. This 6 year old female has had a huge impact on our program. Her first ET calf to hit the ground, HS American Girl Z27K, went on to be a $25,000 high selling open in 2012 Jewels going to Latzke Simmentals, MN. Her DJ Salution son, What A Man A14L is currently one of our main herd sires. What A Girl has worked well producing embryos allowing us to sell numerous embryos lately for $1000+ per embryo. Rincker Simmentals, IL, purchased a set of DJ Salution embryos and sold a heifer for $13,000 and bull for $7,500 for half interest. What A Girl sells in the prime of her life and working as well as ever in embryo production. Last spring she was flushed 3 times freezing 10, 11 and 14 embryos. In mid-October we did our first IVF collection on her and reverse sorted the semen for females and she froze 13 grade #1 embryos. She sells open and ready to flush. As I wrote this footnote, sellers remorse was definitely setting in but we made the decision early last spring that What A Girl would be the lot 1 female in Jewels. A large part of the reason we are willing to let go of What a Girl is the daughter that hit the ground and stole our hearts here last spring. Believe Me Girl has been special from day one and she knows it. Like her mother, she has a killer look and internal dimension that is unmatched. Believe Me Girl is a 3/4 version of her mother. Great haired, easy keeping (meaning wind, water and weeds for this one), sound structured, heavy boned and a sweetheart to work with. Believe Me Girl is one of the most versatile donor prospects we have produced. She will make breeder bulls, commercial bulls, show heifers and breed leading donor prospects. We might be parting with What A Girl but we aren’t crazy enough to part with all of her best daughter to date too. Selling 50% interest and no possession in Believe Me Girl.

CNS Dream On L186 SVF Star Power S802 SVF Sheza Star N902 Nichols Legacy G151 AJE Jasmines Jewel 43T Sandeens Jasmine Where to start? It was quite the journey to get Halo and as her first set of ET calves hit the ground, next spring I know I will want her back. Halo came to be from an unfortunate situation where her mother Jasmines Jewel (natural calf of Sandeens Jasmine), broker her leg as a heifer after she won Reserve Champion Percentage Female in both Junior and Open Shows in Denver and had to be put down. The team at the University of Minnesota did an awesome job with care and ovary extraction of Jewel and TransOva Genetics were able to secure 7 heifer calf pregnancies from the eggs. Halo, from day one, was always my favorite and as her sisters won Champion Pen of 3 Purebreds in Denver and sold through The One, she was saved for the hill and to put back in the herd. As a young cow, Halo hit her first grand slam with natural son HILB Maverick, the $50,000 homo black, New Direction son owned by Lee Cattle Co, NE. He was definitely a crowd favorite in Denver and is proving to be an excellent herd sire. The following year, her natural heifer, HILB Moonlight Crush B43, also by New Direction, sold for $24,000 evaluation through the 2014 Jewels of the Northland to Lee Cattle Co in partnership. We decided after two naturals that had certainly met the approval of the industry, Halo needed to become a donor. Last spring, she froze 20 and 17 on two separate occasions to 3ml sexed semen and this fall froze 8 IVF after having a Combustable heifer calf in February. Her willingness to give us embryos is why we are offering her for sale. This is a young donor in the very prime of her life, that’s proven she can flush, breed back, and flat make you money. We wanted the opportunity to tap one more time into her genetic potential, which is why we left her open this year. Halo sells open and ready to flush. No hesitations needed here, she can get it done!

Snazzy T221Z, Daughter Red baldy cattle are more popular and sought after now than they have ever been and here is a proven one that just happens to be a full sib to the influential stud bull SVF Steel Force. The best term to use when describing Beautiful Dream is Special Dream Z005P, consistent. No matter the sire used, Daughter bull or heifer they are always good and extremely easy to market. This female has been massive and huge hipped since she was a baby. Each year Beautiful Dream’s offspring command top dollars at sales including T221Z “Snazzy” selling for $17,000 and Z005P “Special Dream” selling for $9,750 in past Jewels of the Northland sales. Not only do her heifers excel, Beautiful Dream proved her boys are just as good as this past January two full brothers lead and anchored the 2015 Champion Percentage Pen of Three Bulls in Denver and sold for $7,500 each to Prescott Ranches, CO, and Peggy Brant, MN. No matter if you are looking to make bulls or females, Beautiful Dream is your lady to flat out make good ones time after time. Last spring, she averaged 7 IVF Embryos on 7 collections. Beautiful Dream sells open and ready to flush. Trail of Dreams is the perfect example of how good Beautiful Dream makes them. Sired by the now deceased Wide Track, these genetics are very rare. Not only does this little lady have a stellar set of numbers, but phenotypically she is built as well as they come. Her star and nose snip of white sets her apart as her elegant front ties so smoothly into a capasious middle. Study this one from behind and you will quickly see how versatile she will be. Tie into this one on sale day and let her make you money!

Here is undoubtedly one of the best females we have ever raised. We never intended for this female to leave the place but her she is. This past spring, we decided to flush her IVF once before we bred her and once more after she was pregnant with great results averaging nine freezable eggs. We all know that when we buy a new female to turn into a donor, they do not always flush good or sometimes not at all. Here the guess work is already done for you. Jezebel is out of Sheza Beauty U823, a full sib to the great Steel Force bull and Uprising bull that has made his mark on the breed this past year siring the record high selling bull in Denver WS Revival for $160,000. Last fall we sold a full sibling, HSF Mariah B403 at the North American Select Simmental Sale in Louisville, KY, where she was one of the high selling open heifers to Reed Hedrick and Harmony Hill, IN, for $10,200. Reed showed her at numerous shows this past year winning Grand Champion Female at the Eastern Regionals and at the Indiana State Fair as well as several other shows. Sheza Beauty U823 is a full sister to the great Simmental bull Steel Force and a member of the Sheza Beauty family that is known for producing purebreds that can flex and float when they go. We get asked numerous times throughout the year for purebred donor prospects and here is one that comes HIGHLY HIGHLY recommended. A favorite of Amanda’s since she was a few weeks old. We have a couple fall half blood PVF Insight calves on the ground and they look cool. Have heard great things from others that have seen Insight calves. Everyone loves a good red head and this girl sure hits that mark! She’s good boned, nice haired, deep flanked and big ribbed. Big time donor possibility here if you’re looking for a red one! Her mating to our heterozygous black herd sire Executive Order makes this package even more special. It wouldn’t matter what color the calf is, I think it’s going to be pretty special either way, but wouldn’t those be some cool red genetics!

Some of Gem’s past accomplishments include two $15,000 high selling Louisville heifers along with a $20,000 valued private treaty heifer but I’d have to say she really hit it out of the ball park with her set of calves this year. They are all big time prospects with beautiful phenotypes, awesome personalities and the genetics to back it all up! Yep, granddaughters of the $90,000 valued Miley Cottontail and backed by the great H25 cow. I can’t wait to get her next set on the ground and here’s your chance to get a few of your own! High Regard is well known for putting some look into his calves, pair that up with Gem and I think this mating could be pretty special.

A full sister to our B38R bred heifer selling, this girl has been super flashy since she was just a baby. Really cool fronted with a soft pastern and big stride she developed into a beautifully uddered cow this past year and is just getting started in our donor program. We anticipate big things from her in the future and here’s your chance to get in on the ground floor. Her mating to Executive Order should be a really cool combination.

Her sister, C45W, won’t have any problems finding her own fan club sale day either. The amount of rib shape in this girl is absolutely unreal. Wait until you get a look at her! Pair it up with one of the most beautiful front ends you can make and we’re talking big time possibilities here. She’s got the potential to produce some flat out awesome ones in her future! Included in the package is one of the sweetest dispositions you can imagine. She was kid broke before we put a halter on her. I sure hope she finds herself a home willing to spoil her a bit because I think she’s going to deserve it!

FBF1 Absolute, Supreme Grand Champion Bull 2015 World Beef Expo, Son of LLSF Neon Rey by Supremacy

This girl has done a phenomenal job for us producing some real show ring appeal with the performance to back it up. Her first daughters (the $10,500 Neon Splash, selected by the DeCap family, IA and the $7500 Neon Sky selected by the Willis family, WV) just entered production this past year and according to their new owners, “are some of the most gorgeous cows they’ve ever owned”. Beautiful udders just like their dam, nice haired and the ability to pass on that big huge rib, soft pastern and an awesome back leg. Her sons can get it done as well. FBF1 Absolute, by Supremacy, recently broke a sale record at the 2015 World Beef Expo selling for $20,500 for 1/2 possession and 1/2 semen interest and then went on to be crowned the Supreme Champion bull where he made quite a buzz. Don’t miss the chance to see him out on the show circuit this winter. Two additional daughters by High Regard and Lock Down led off the open division in the 2015 Buckeye’s Finest Sale for Ferguson’s where they sold with top honors going to Haley Farms, OH and Hudson Pine Farms, NY, respectively.

ABSOLUTE BELLY DRAGGER!!! Yep, she inherited all of her momma’s big huge rib, soft pastern and slick front end. This girl is going blow you away as a bred! Around here she’s been nicknamed the mini cow since she was about 3 months old. You just don’t see calves with this much rib and capacity! Overall, she’s probably one of the closest phenotypical matches we’ve had to Neon herself… only this one has a blaze face! She’s got a full sister that was recently selected by Hudson Pine Farms as one of the top sellers in the Buckeyes Finest Sale. Lots of possibilities with this one.

This smooth made baldy just could be the sleeper of the sale. We think she’s got all the right parts and pieces to be a really neat show heifer next summer. She’s extended through her front end, straight in her lines and extremely soft pasterned and good footed but at the time just presents herself as being a little later maturing compared to some of the others. The Neon’s do tend to turn it on as yearlings and I’ve heard the same about the Combustibles. Give this little gem some time to bloom and I think you’re going to be really happy you made the decision to take her home!

Here’s a pair of 3/4 sibs that are sure to get quite a few looks on sale day. A390 is a full sib to HSF/JRB Mia B411 that sold in last years Jewels sale to Foreman Cattle & Jack McKinney for $4,500 that went on to be Reserve Division Champion in a huge division behind the Grand Champion Simmental Female at the Iowa State Fair which happened to be the largest Simmental show in breed history. That same female they sold at the resent Midwest Made Sale where she was the high selling bred female for $12,000 to Fenton Farm Simmentals, MS. Alexis is very similar to her sister Mia being moderate framed, big bodied and super sound all tied together in an attractive baldy look. And then there is Lela who has that maternal look that we all look for in a female. She is soft made and very fluid. Both are sure to make great cows that are sure to find their way to the Donor pen. Owned with JRB Farm.

Here is a neat trio of sisters whether your looking for a black baldy or a red headed baldy, one of these will fit the bill. The two Lock Down heifers have been farm favorites by visitors all summer and fall. These two rocket fronted heifers are easy on the eyes to say the least from their sound structure, long bodied, great hipped and EPDs that are as impressive as the heifers are themselves. Not to take anything away from the Lock N Load heifer. She is pretty neat herself and will make one heck of a female. These three are surely the front pasture kind.

This one puts butterflies in my stomach and even as I start to write this footnote I’m not so sure what our final outcome will be on how we decide to partner her out. She’s one that has really grown on us over the summer. I take that back, she’s been a favorite from the start but we just keep falling further in love. She’s just got so much bone under her and yet she’s really smooth patterned, loose structured, extremely sound on the move, good ribbed with depth of flank and nice hipped. If we owned her dam, maybe it would be easier to let her go, but I’m not so sure. She’s kind of one of those one-in-a-million types of deals and I think we’d regret it for a really long time if we did. The catalog isn’t even out yet and this girl is already causing a stir. She’s pretty special! Selling 1/2 interest, possession negotiable. She’s like an addiction, I just can’t let her go!

Now I feel bad for this girl because in all respect she’s pretty darn nice herself and really isn’t that far from being right up there with her sister. Take a look at her video and you’ll see what I mean. She actually might be just a little bit deeper, she’s got bone, depth of flank and is really sound on the move as well. Add in that touch of white on her face and some might just like her better. These two maternal sibs to Combustible are going to have no problems finding a lot of friends on sale day. When these two I-80s hit the ground, the term “Sim-Alien” was coined in a hurry. It’s extremely rare to find a Simmental with necks like these girls. What’s even better is the overall mass that ties so eloquently into those giraffe necks. I-80 progeny has been hot this year and we understandable see why. On the purebred flip side, the mating of Gabby to Uprising has clearly spoken for itself. Girl Party and Girl Crush are full sisters to the $40,000 HILB Miss Enchantress, that sold in the 2014 sale to Hudson Pines and Tingle Farms and the $20,000 HILB Oo La La who sold in The One in Denver to Harkers Simmentals. Take your pick on a baldy or solid black! Although good ole Minnesota weather tried hard to snow on picture day, both heifers deserve special attention. They are elegant fronted, big bodied, sound structured and are entered as part of our Louisville string. Power in the blood here! All three of these Gracie daughters are as stout and capacious as they come. Sangria will be great for a young junior wanting to compete at the top of the class at the Jr. Nationals in Des Moines. The easy keeping, sound structured baldy has all the right pieces to turn herself into a donor after she’s done on the tan bark. We reserve the right to a future flush on Sangria at the buyers convenience and sellers expense with a minimum of 6 transferrable embryos.

When searching for the next Angus sire to use on Stop & Stare we came across Silveiras S Sis GQ 2353 and we knew right away he would work. A Style son out of a Lookout cow seemed the perfect fit since both Style and Lookout work extremely well on this cow family. Super deep, cool profiling, sound, what’s not to like about this guy. Painted Beauty was the first to hit the ground and comes with a little color to grab everyone’s attention. This one will be fun to lead around the show ring and even more fun to see out roaming across the pasture with a calf at side. Big bellied, level topped, sound, sweeping rib. Point & Stare is the perfect baldy that has been super hairy since she was young. She has always had a presence and confidence about her. She has been a favorite around here all fall and one of the best Stop & Stare has produced. This donor prospect like her sister is really deep and capacious with an impressive set of EPDs. This one is worth the trip to the Northland in December. Also be sure to look her up if you are in Louisville.

Her full sister HILB Caught Lookin B929 topped last year’s Jewels sale at $45,000 to Circle M Farms, TX. She has had a great show career so far being named Calf Champion in Denver and Dixie National and Reserve Champion Female at Sweepstakes this summer. We feel Stop & Dance looks like a combination of 2 of her full sibs; Caught Lookin B929 and 2012 Jewels $30,000 high seller Hope U R Lookin that sold to NLC Ranch, SD. We can’t get enough baldies and everyone that has stopped at the farm this fall gravitate to this young May baby with the perfect baldy face. Last year a May Stop & Stare heifer stole the hearts of people that saw her in Louisville and sale week. It may happen again this year. If you are searching for a younger SimAngus™ heifer that can compete at any level, this one will fit the bill. Look her up in Louisville as she will be the cute one on the end of the string. If you are in more of a hurry to get a Stop & Stare daughter in production then B8P might be the one for you. Another baldy that is extra attractive, smooth, good fronted with a great set of EPDs. A full sister sold in last year’s sale to Ver Ploeg Farms, IA for $9,750. As far as SimAngus™ genetics, we didn’t know if we could ever out do the Glitter x Lookout mating and then we mated Stop & Stare to Lookout and the bar was raised even farther. Four individuals out of this mating were shown in Louisville with all of them claiming part of their division then they went on to top Jewels and Denver sale. Now as the Lookout x Stop & Stare females enter production, it’s time to see their real earning potential and it looks as if they are ready to raise the bar again. Sneak A Peek is a young donor we own in partnership with Paul Krueger, MN. Her first natural calf was a member of our 2015 Denver champion Pen of 3 Bulls and a favorite of the judges. He is now owned by Gana Farms, NE. Shes Kinda Hot and Hide and Peek are part of the first set of ET calves to hit the ground from Sneak A Peek and this pair of 3/4 blood maternal sisters are as fun to study as any in our calf crop this year. Kinda Hot is so well balanced, long made, graceful on the move with as balanced set of EPDs as any selling December 5th. She will be a member of the Louisville show string so be sure to check her out our stalls or on the green chips. At Junior Nationals next July in Des Moines, it will more than likely be “Kinda Hot” but no need to sweat if you are leading this one. She should look stellar on foot and paper. Trey Jass campaigned a Baby’s Breath x Broker daughter, HILB Crazy N Love A475S, last fall and won the open show in Louisville and then in January he took her out again and she claimed Grand Champion banners back to back days in Denver winning both the Junior and Open Shows. When walking through the pasture this fall, I kick myself daily for not getting Baby Fever in the barn and ready for the show road this fall. Baby Fever ranks among Baby’s Breath greatest daughters. It all starts at the ground; sets on big foot, soft pasterned and as sound as we can make one. She is big topped, barrel ribbed and carries her mass is an elegant and graceful package that is a Babys Breath trademark. We debated selling this one in Denver, not selling this one at all and finally decided to sell 50% interest in this one here on the farm on December 5th. Backed by a great cow family, a phenotype you can’t poke a hole in and a pedigree that allows for unlimited mating possibilities makes this one a big time donor female. All we need now is a partner to help share in and navigate the ride. Tested free for DD. Selling 50% interest and possession negotiable. Buyer has right to double the bid price for 100% interest. Victoria Family

Victoria has proven time and time again why she is our lead donor female with her constancy year after year. Here are three daughters to prove it. B406 is a black beauty that is long fronted, long bodied that has all the right pieces to make a great cow and donor. We retained a full sib to this female to make her mark and start a new chapter in our donor program. She is the first Victoria daughter that we have retained for our donor program. B408 maybe the most powerful, massive female to sell anywhere this fall, she is a beast. She is a full sibling to HSF Chelsea X045 which was the High Selling Female in the first Jewels Sale to Washburn and Osborne Simmental, IL, for 13,000. Who’s daughter was Reserve Division for us in the SimAngus™ Show at the North American in Louisville last year. And last but not least, B436 is a cool fronted female that could fit any part of the beef industry. You may want to breed purebreds or make her a clubby momma, she will get the job done. We reserve the right to a future flush with a minimum of 6 transferable embryos to be done at the seller’s expense and the buyer’s convenience on both B406 and B408.

Call us crazy for letting this one go but that’s what a production sale is all about. Out of the now deceased Wide Track, this is a whale of a bred heifer. She is huge middled, really long fronted and about as flashy as you can make one. Just imagine what she could have looked like if we would have had her in the show barn all summer because I’m pretty sure she could have competed. She’s that good! Bred to No Remorse, hold on to your hats when that combination hits the ground! This girl is definite donor material. She’s been nothing but a baby doll though. Overall, there’s some pretty cool genetics here with the phenomenal EPD Angus sire Upshot on the top side and Stella on the bottom. She’s really well balanced, nice hipped, good in her lines, deep flanked and wraps it all up into an elegantly made really awesome haired package! She’s neat!

Selling Your Choice of Lot 43 & 43A...

Stella definitely started off her career with a bang. Her first heifer calf to sell was selected by the Willis Family in last year’s Jewels sale for $20,000 and then went on to stand 3rd overall at the 2015 Eastern Junior Regionals. I think this year’s offerings have got just as much potential if not more! It’s taken her no time at all to prove to us that she was cut from her mother’s mold. Victoria has been producing sale toppers and show winners for a lot of years for the Hecksels and it’s because of that proven record that we chose to add Stella to our donor lineup. We’re pretty excited about what her future holds and can’t wait to see what she has in store for us. We were pretty fortunate to get quite a few pregnancies out of her this year and for that reason we’ve decide to share a few with you. All 3 matings were produced using IVF reverse-sort sexed heifer semen and placed in Trans Ova health-certified recipients. They have been screened for BVD, Brucellosis, BLV (Leukosis), Neospora, Johne’s and Anaplasmosis. We’ve been housing them in a grass lot surrounded by a single poly wire so disposition has not been a problem at all.

Reba Family

Reba 6118S is probably our most under utilized donor we own and it took four incredible daughters by four different sires for us to realize it. To date, whatever bull we use on her seems to work. B419 is a 7/8 sib in blood to DAF Rachael X48 who was Third Overall at Junior Nationals and Champion Female at the Breeders Sweepstakes for Diamond A Farms. B441 didn’t get a picture due to rainy weather but this cool made baldy female fit the same mold as her sisters. All four of these girls are big bodied, stout and massive on top of a big foot and sound structure. Finding your favorite out of these four girls maybe the hardest thing you will have to do on December 5. We reserve the right to a future flush with a minimum of 6 transferable embryos to be done at the seller’s expense and the buyer’s convenience on B419.

Here is the first and only ET heifer born to date out of Glimmering Hope. One spin through the pen of sale opens and you can tell Glitz N Glamour is a member of the Ebonys Joys 479P “Hope” cow family. Soft sided, great haired, free moving and quiet. I will be first to admit she has a little front right now but I can assure you she will grow into it just like her grandmother did on her way to a great show career. Glimmering Hope’s full sister sold in 2012 Jewels sale for $20,000 Watson and Koty Allen and has gone on to be a great cow after her show career. Take this one home and have some fun with her in the show ring and then let her heritage help you make money for many years to come.

Paris is the first heifer calf out of one of our favorite AI cows, AJE Chanel. When this little Payday baby girl hit the ground, we had to keep her to see how Chanel girls would grow and she did not disappoint! Needless to say, we are so happy with her development, Chanel made her way to the donor pen this fall. Paris is stout made, cool fronted and extremely long. One of the most predictable cow families we’ve ever been a part of. It’s no secret that the Pearl daughters make phenomenal cows. Her mating to High Regard put some style into this one. Wait until you see the rib shape and dimension in her. Her picture really doesn’t do her justice in that department. We think her mating to Wide Range will be pretty special!

Talk about a stud, and this guy thinks he’s been one since the day he hit the ground. Though, with growth numbers in the top 25 and 15% of the breed, it didn’t take him to long to prove it was true either. Lots of performance here with a little bit different twist on the pedigree as well. He’s really long bodied, soft made, nice hipped and with a little more age on him, he’ll be ready to work a few more cows this spring or even this winter if you need him to run on some fall cows. Here’s a really cool calving ease prospect with some look and style to him. He’s super complete from head to toe, balances out beautifully and sets down on a really good set of feet and legs. Being one of the heaviest and stoutest females at weaning time is easy to see where it comes from. Bree has about as much rib shape, depth of body and mass as you could ever ask for, on top of a huge foot and plenty of bone that can move around with ease and still has a feminine look. Just check out her sister and you will see there is power in this bloodline. The Uprising females make great open and even better breds of which this coming spring, I have no doubt they will make great cows with profit to burn.
