42 years and going strong!

MSA Queen: Mary Moenning

Welcome to the 42nd Annual MN State Simmental Sale! Please accept this invitation to join the Minnesota Simmental Breeders as they celebrate the annual meeting, banquet and State Sale. The breeders dedicated to this long running sale have brought you genetics from the heart of their herds and cattle with pedigrees rich in profitable breed leading genetics. It is always a fun filled weekend of fellowship, quite a few laughs and top notch cattle. Give us a call if we can help you with any of your marketing questions. See you in Rochester! Eberspacher Enterprises Inc. NEW INCENTIVE PROGRAM FOR JUNIORS SPONSORED BY THE MINNESOTA SIMMENTAL ASSOCIATION The Minnesota Simmental Association is sponsoring a new incentive program for juniors. When a junior purchases an open female at the annual MN State Simmental Sale, the junior can reconsign the heifer as a bred for the next year’s auction, or if the junior purchased a bred female, they may consign her resulting off-spring to sell at the next year’s auction. When the junior brings back the animal to sell, they will only be charged 1/2 of the usual sale’s expenses. This is a one-time option available to all juniors. Animals must be purchased and resold during consecutive years to take advantage of the program. Consider the opportunities as you study your 2015 MN State Sale catalog!

It has been a pleasure to serve our members as your Simmental Queen. I had an amazing year traveling the state and meeting new and old friends. I attended many county fairs, jackpots and attended the MN State Fair. I enjoyed representing MN at these shows. Thank you to Korrie Perschau for being our princess. I enjoyed our friendship throughout the year. She represented our association as many shows as well. Now all of us have the excitement of hosting the North Central Regional Classic in Austin, MN. Our theme this year is Drive North to the Backdrop. Make sure to follow our Minnesota Simmental Association and Drive North to the Backdrop on Facebook and Twitter. Thank you for the opportunity to serve you and I look forward to staying engaged in our state and association in the years to come. Mary Moenning, Hayfield, MN

Michael Schmidt, MSA President

Greetings Simmental Breeders, Welcome back to the Minnesota State Simmental Sale. I always consider this banquet to signify the end of the year, but at the same time, it starts the beginning of a new year with new opportunities. When I look back on last year, and the accomplishments that junior and senior members have achieved, it only makes me more excited for what is yet to come. Our juniors have been busy showing great Simmental cattle at local, state and national shows, and promoting the Simmental breed. I would also like to commend our juniors on being outstanding mentors and teachers to younger members. Looking forward to what’s to come only makes me more excited to be apart of this junior program. We have the opportunity to host the 2015 North Regional Classic which will be held in Austin, MN. Both our senior and junior boards have been, and will continue to work hard in preparation to make this a memorable show. On behave of the junior board, we would like to thank you for your past contributions and encourage any new support. I am truly honored and thankful I have the opportunity to help be a part of such a great and meaningful program. With hard working junior members and advisors, the 2015 North Regional Classic is shaping up to be one to remember. See you in Austin! Ben Markegard, MJSA President

MSA 2015 • 1 • SALE INFORMATION

From Your Association Presidents:

Greetings, It is with with great pleasure that we welcome you to the 2015 MN State Simmental Association sale and events. Once again, our Minnesota breeders have brought you some of the finest live and genetic Simmental and SimAngus consignments found anywhere in the United States. As this sale enters its 42nd year, it is a testament to the diligent work being done by all our membership to produce the finest quality genetics to meet our customers demands and consumer expectations. I want to take this opportunity to thank the consignors for your loyalty to the MSA and this sale. We know it takes a tremendous amount of work and an equal amount of dedication to bring cattle to this sale each February. This is a great time to be in the beef cattle industry and the Simmental & Simgenetics are leading the way with breedings pieces destined to elevate programs near and far. As many of you are surely aware, Minnesota is hosting the North Central Simmental Regional June 16-19th in Austin, MN. We are truly excited to support the MJSA on their hosting of this event and feel there are several open heifer options on this sale that could allow a Jr. exhibitor to be extremely competitive. Once again, we are holding the Junior Auction and Semen auction during the Friday night banquet. Please plan to attend the evening banquet and it is never too late to donate. Feel free to contact Erick Barberg (semen donations: 651-260-1951) or Ben Markagard (junior auction items: 507-459-3869) if you would like to donate. I can’t think of any better way to spend time with fellow Simmental enthusiasts than by attending our Annual Membership meeting at 1:00 PM February 27th which will be followed by our MJSA meeting which leads into the evenings activities during the banquet. Once again, we are primed for an exciting weekend in Rochester and I look forward to seeing fellow cattlemen coming together to support our association and the junior membership. The MSA is the finest group of people and it is truly a blessing to be a part of it.

We saw some pretty cool combustible calves out in Denver a month ago and think this will be a pretty cool mating with Star. Stemming from the immortal JM BF H25 cow, we love the potential that she has with her outcross pedigree! We purchased her as an embryo from Windy Ridge Simmentals in the hopes of getting a heifer and boy did we hit the jackpot when she also came out with a perfect blaze face! She’s developed into a beautiful cow herself with a perfect udder and has found herself some friends during farm visits. Star calved this past fall and currently has a really cool half blood EXAR Upshot heifer calf on the ground! She’s got the power in her blood to produce the good ones! Precious Y19 is quickly working her way to be one of our top young donors. She has proven herself to produce cattle that are consistently high in quality. Both females and bulls out of this cow are physically great to look at and are solid on paper. We think this mating to Bandwagon could be very exciting. We were impressed by his stout build, mass and overall look at the Denver sale last year. This should complement Y19 very well and the calves could be awesome. The embryos would be maternal sibs to our GLS Ms. Uprising B91 female that you will be hearing a whole lot more about in the future. Get in on these embryos from our exciting young donor. HSF Baby Doll W959 is a beautiful baldy female that is extremely hairy, stout boned, and bold sprung that ties a sound structure into a long extended front end. In the 2009 Northern Lights sale where she was the high selling percentage female and second high seller, she created a lot of excitement. This continues as her ET calves by Steel Force, Broker, Monopoly, and Chamberlain are on the ground and have exceeded our expectations. In her short career, she has produced over $150,000 in embryo and progeny sales. She produced a high selling heifer in The One Sale at Denver this past year for $16000 by Steel Force going to Campbell Show Calves and a $14,000 heifer by Broker for Vance Metzger via an embryo purchase. She has a perfect udder and does a fantastic job raising calves. Her dam has exceeded the $300,000 life time earnings mark and Baby Doll is on her pace. We added this super Sadie descendent to our donor program last year. We are very excited what this heifer has to offer. She is a beautiful made, great structured female that we think will produce great bulls and females alike. One of the first flushes we did on this cow was to the exciting new sire LRS Turning Point, the awesome Top Grade son that was purchased by Felt and Western Cattle Source. I was fortunate to see Turning Point at stud before his untimely death and loved the way the bull was made and what he had to offer. I flushed some cows to him and now the opportunity is yours to buy some embryos out of him and this great young female. SVF Steel Force S701 JM BF H25 S A V 8180 Traveler 004 P V F Proven Queen 602

Our search for an elite Angus donor with the potential to produce top notch SimAngus™ females brought us to 8202. This proven Pathfinder dam has already produced plenty of valuable, high quality purebred cattle but this will be her first opportunity to be mated to a Simmental sire. We will let the buyer choose if they prefer to use Broker, the proven sire of Champions, or Hammer, who is one of the Simmental breeds most exciting young sires. After the buyer selects a sire, they will receive three sexed IVF heifer embryos that will be produced at Polzin Embryo Center’s IVF facility. Keep in mind we have plenty of recipient options available if you would like us to put these embryos in fresh for your selected calving date. We purchased Glory T907 in the fall of 2008 from Sunset View Farms out of the Foster Brother Select Hybrid Sale and she has not disappointed us yet. So far she has earned us over $33,000 in progeny and embryo sales. Glory was the dam to our class winning Pen of Bulls in the 2013 National Western Pen Show with three Upgrade flush mates. We are excited to offer this mating to the ABS bull WS Prime Beef Z8. Not only do the numbers on this mating look good but the calves should be deep bodied, stout made, powerfully made individuals with the daughters having excellent udders as well. So buy with confidence on this mating, it should be a good one. Guaranteeing one pregnancy if the work is completed by a certified embryologist. Minnesota

Dream Of Me has been a dream to work with and be around. From her gentle temperament to her added rib and flexible skeleton. She has become one of our favorites. Her first calves have been moderate and easy fleshing with added balance and style with flawless movement. Combine that with the outcross performance pedigree of Wide Track and this could be great. Dream Of Me came out of a flush where we had great success with having 10 of 12 live calves. She herself just averaged 13.5 number one embryos on two flushes this fall. We believe these eggs will be able to work in the show ring but more importantly go on to work in the pasture for their new owners. She is great structures and is sired by Special Delivery who has done a tremendous job in our program. His sons are consistently high sellers and his daughter are making front pasture kind of cows. Her dam never misses and always raises a good one and this female is sure to follow in her footsteps. She sells bred to Popeye who was a high seller in our 2014 bull sale and is a promising calving ease baldy son of Ranch Hand. We thought enough of the bull that we used him in our own program and are excited about the calves that are coming this spring. This Lookout heifer has a lot going for her. Sweeping rib cage, good on her legs, sound structured and a sweet side profile with a feminine touch. Her mother was a first calf heifer and did an exceptional job raising her first calf. I believe Juliet has a bright future ahead of her and has the EPDs and pedigree to prove it. She is going to make a great cow after her show career is over. Minnesota

This deep bodied high volume female is from one of the most memorable cow families that have demonstrated the ability to be competitive in the show ring and perform well in the pasture. Her maternal grandmother CJ Scarlett 46S was a high seller at the previous Minnesota State Sale and is also the mother of our Progress bull who was the Reserve Bull Calf Champion at the highly competitive 2014 Iowa State Fair. Her mother HA Cindy 204Z won the large junior yearling class at the Minnesota State Fair 4-H Show. The combination of a rich heritage and an unique pedigree enables the potential for many successful breeding possibilities. Minnesota

Uniquely designed, the mating of this heifer contains genetics that produce show ring champions on the top side with genetics that yield production cattle on the bottom side. With her combination of a moderate frame and stoutness along with strong growth and carcass EPDs, she is well suited for a variety of environments. Adding to her appeal is the beautiful udder design of her dam. With the multi-faceted traits this heifer carries, she should make a tremendous breeding piece.

This girl screams cow power and not just because she combines two of the top cow families to ever grace the Hilbrands’ donor pens but also because of how she combines those genetics into a stout, big ribbed, deep flanked package. Her stayability ranks in the top 4% of the breed and for good reason. Both her dam and grand-dam, Pearl and Babys Breath are still flushing well and producing the good ones at eleven years of age! Pearl’s daughters are making tremendous cows with some of them headlining donor programs themselves. While Baby’s Breath’s most recent fete includes the crowning of her daughter, HILB Crazy In Love owned by Trey Jass, IA, with the title of Grand Champion Heifer in both the Louisville and Denver Open Shows, as well as, in the Denver Junior show!
