Welcome!! :) Hey guys!! Last month was a much quieter month on the Your Riding Success workshop front... but that’s doesn’t mean we haven’t been busy little bees down here at YRS HQ! Usually when we have a lull in the YRS activities... that’s when Tash gets some of her crazy/awesome ideas! For the last month we have been working on getting the new format of the Dream Team put together, and over the weekend Tash ran her first Dream Team Success Launch Day!! Huge success! Enjoy this months magazine, and let me know if you need anything!! :) To Your Dreams Becoming Reality,

YOUR RIDING SUCCESS TV QUESTION: HOW DO YOU WARM UP A HORSE FOR A TEST - NOT JUST FOR YOUR GRAND PRIX TESTS, BUT TESTS IN GENERAL. WHAT ARE THE TECHNIQUES THAT YOU USE, AND WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO GO ABOUT IT SO THAT YOU PERFORM THE BEST TEST THAT YOU POSSIBLY CAN?
This month I have had a lot of questions about how I warm Abe up for a competition what kinds of things do I do with him to get him ready for a test... so I thought I would give you a sneak peek into one of my Dream Team Success Launch Days where I answered this question... When I am warming up my horse... I want his head down, and I want him to start to come over his back. If I don’t have Abe really fiery when we are in the warmup, he starts to lose
energy during the test. I want to have him thinking through and connecting to the bit. I like to do counter canter because he likes to stall, and he likes to such back. I like to do a flying change out of medium canter... and if he doesn’t do this, then I know the warm up isn’t over! So what I want is forward and connection... and when we have this then we can do the Grand Prix work!

YOUR RIDING SUCCESS TV It’s about getting him to move where I want him, to do it under his own steam.
Good luck and let me know how you go! :)
Friesians are quiet horses, so I want him to think more like a racehorse! I will do anything that a horse doesn’t want to do. So with the Friesians I will ride them above the rhythm that they are most wanting to do. If I was riding a really hot thoroughbred, then I would ride it below the rhythm that they really want to go in.
Have fun - good luck to you guys, and make sure you have a super week! If you have any other questions, make sure you contact me - info@yourridingsuccess.com To Your Success,
It’s about controlling them and being the leader - you do what I want. On a horse that wants to go fast, you are going to go slow, and on a horse that wants to go fast you are going to go slow. I hope this has helped you in your preparations for warming up before a test!

FROM THE HORSES MOUTH | ABE’S PERSPECTIVE Hey super riders! My name is Abe and I am Natasha’s superstar Friesian stallion and her one and only horse she likes to ride. I told her I thought it was very unfair that she was the only one to share how to ride - as lets’ face it... I’m the one that really makes it all happen - so this is my chance to teach you how to really ride a horse... with advice straight from the horses mouth!
Hello humans! How are you!?!? I am really happy! Winter is here - which means Tash gets lazy and rides me less - yay!
better and things to be better and better and to be honest I just get a bit over it and so does she.
I'm sure she has some holiday planned which is awesome because then I get 2-4 weeks off as well! I LOVE time off! I spend the time thinking of the mares I will breed with in Spring and all that yummy green grass that also comes in... and of course how everyone will love me when we go out and compete again.
The rain and cold makes things a little uncomfortable and she is shitty and I am shitty and together we just stop making progress.
A rest is really important especially for someone like Tash. She can be a little bit crazy! She always wants MORE and wants me to work better and

FROM THE HORSES MOUTH | ABE’S PERSPECTIVE This makes Tash crazier. What she has learned - thank GOD! I've been trying to teach her for 7 years! But ya what she has learned is to make progress sometimes the best thing you can do is stop. It seems counter-intuitive - (I know I am a horse but I have a big vocabulary!) To advance, get stronger, make progress, get results - yes you need to work hard, but there also needs to be a time for rest and recovery. A time to let everything sink in and just settle so you know where you are. You can't push all the time.
perform for her... Plus I think it’s funny when she doesn't ride those movements for a week and then I do it perfectly - I'm telling her - ride me less!!!... and feed me more! So in your riding this month - it’s ok to give your horses a bit of time off - and more carrots! I'm telling you now we will perform better for you!!! :) To Your Success,
Abe
Whenever Tash gets a bit too retarted in her riding and I end up not understanding her at all, so we lose the one time tempis and the half pass looks crap... The best thing she can do is leave me alone. In her attempt to 'force' it she does the opposite and loses it. It’s only when she lets go, chills out and leaves me to it then I can then YOUR RIDING SUCCESS MONTHLY | June 2013 | 7

FROM THE EXPERTS | NATASHA ALTHOFF THE EXCUSE - EXPLORING SECONDARY GAIN It’s too hot It’s too cold It’s too dark It takes too long I’m too tired It’s too hard It’s complicated I can’t I won’t This is a small sample of the ‘stories’ I hear when it comes to why people aren’t riding their horses or aren’t riding them enough to get the results they want. I love it when people say to me I really want x, but I keep getting y. So I tell them, well then you really did want y. For example - I really want to ride at Grand Prix, but I ride grade 5. Then they really want to ride at grade 5. We ALWAYS have the life we want! Have a think about that ... we are living the EXACT life you want to be living! ... I can hear the chorus from here! I am not! I don’t want to be broke or unhealthy or unsuccessful, or whatever it is, I want to be rich, healthy and successful. Yes I’m sure you do, but you are not willing to do the actions necessary to be those things. Wanting something is the first step, but ACTION is everything! It is impossible to do the actions of an unhealthy person and be a healthy person. In order to be the healthy person you want to be you have to be willing to do the actions they do. So if you want to be an amazing rider, you need to do what amazing riders do. If an amazing rider’s alarm goes off in the middle of winter, rain pouring down, still dark and cold, what do they do? I’m thinking they will get up! Now I don’t believe they get up all cheery and happy and
wow what a great day! They are human after all! But they will do the action necessary for their goal. I know with me I don’t even process the weather as I am too fixated on the why I am doing this. I am getting up today because next week I have a competition that will get me a step closer to Grand Prix that will get me a step closer to the Olympics. So I hope you can see from my examples. A healthy person puts their want for health above their want for junk food and an idle lifestyle. I know myself that I am a chocoholic and I love my couch. But I eat fruit for breakfast and salad for lunch. I run three days a week and go to the gym 4 days a week. So I want to eat chocolate and sit on the couch but I what want more than that a slim strong body to ride horses and a healthy body that can live long with energy and vitality. Again I want to eat chocolate and sit on the couch when it is time to ride but so much more than that I want to win the Olympics, so I have work to do! The excuses and the stories come into play when someone says they want x, really want y and then to JUSTIFY themselves as to why they get y they have to have an amazing story or excuse. Now I know you might be reading this like my clients and are thinking – ‘Are you crazy, no I really want x and I don’t want y!’ But when we go exploring we come to realise there is a reason you want y more than x. For instance it’s winter the alarm goes off and you don’t want to get out of bed so you don’t and you don’t ride but you say to yourself, No I really do want to ride, yes maybe you do want to ride, I don’t dispute that BUT you want to stay in bed MORE than you want to ride. People say that

with smoking all the time - I want to quit, yes but maybe you want to smoke MORE than you want to quit. It’s only when the wanting to quit is more than your want to smoke that you will actually quit and stay off the cigarettes. By knowing all this we can start to really analyse why we do the things we do and why we get the results we get. This action of wanting one thing and getting the other is the exploration of secondary gain. Humans are only capable of doing actions they get benefit from. Put simply humans will do more to avoid pain than we do to feel pleasure. Even when looking at an act like drug taking or obesity that can risk death they still keep doing the act because of this secondary gain. So yes, riding might give you pleasure but if you perceive the pain of getting out of bed as more than the pleasure you get from riding you will stay in bed. So what are your stories or excuses? What is your secondary gain around the story. Sometimes you really need to look outside the box. Perhaps it is your need for drama or significance being met? Perhaps it is your need to feel safe, or your need for comfort. Whatever it is you need to acknowledge it and then go about framing it differently in your mind so you want y more than x.
QUOTE OF THE MONTH
WE CAN HAVE MORE THAN WE’VE GOT BECAUSE WE CAN BECOME MORE THAN WE ARE.
Remember “Watch your thoughts, for they become words. Watch your words, for they become actions. Watch your actions, for they become habits. Watch your habits, for they become character. Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.” And it’s not what we want that is important, it’s what we will do to get what we want that is really important. To Your Success,

TASH’S THOUGHTS Happy June Super Riders!!!! :):):) I trust you are having a wonderful month!!!!! What new things did you learn? Master? Grow from? I love Winter as it gives me time to reflect and take some time out from competition. I can really work on our weaknesses, and take the time to work on the basics and build up strength. I also take between 2-4 weeks off to give the horses some time to re-charge - as well as myself. The horses seem to come back better than ever so it all works well :) I would like to congratulate my recent Breakthrough graduates. We received some AMAZING emails filled with their results 30 days out from the weekend. Kate and I were so excited and happy for you!!!!! Congratulations on doing the work and pushing out of your comfort zone :) I am very blessed to be able to help and support truly amazing people and riders achieve their goals. Sometimes it is hard, frustrating and soul searching, but the people that dig deep, the people that keep showing up, courageous and willing to do whatever it takes, they astound me every single day, and I feel so lucky I get to be a part of their amazing journey. So thank you to all my wonderful clients - Love you! Have a truly special month of June! Happy riding!!!! To your success,
so make sure you tune into their live stream for that!

My journey as a member of the 2012 Dream Team began with me making the choice to put my needs first & say yes to starting the course! This decision at the time wasn't an easy one as I found it hard to explain to myself & others why I needed to spend time & money to overcome the fears & negative beliefs I had developed around competition riding. However, I quickly realised that it was the best decision I could have made, & now truly believe that there is no point spending money on riding lessons & competition entry fees if my head isn't in the right space to do my best, without being held back by limiting beliefs. I am truly thankful to Tash & everything I have learnt from the Dream Team Program. It has opened my eyes up to a much more positive & helpful way of thinking & I am now equipped with so many different techniques & tools that help me to control any negative thoughts or over powering fears that might come up from time to time. I am feeling so much more in control of my life in all aspects, not just riding - & I am very excited about my future & where my wonderful new mindset & knowledge will take me. Tash has been a wonderful mentor to me & is always willing to answer any questions I have or help me in any way she can. Her dedication to her clients was displayed to me last year at the Dressage Festival at Werribee in December when she was there by my side at the start of my first test. As a great distraction tool to help me relax & have fun she graciously lifted her top & flashed me just before I trotted up the center line!!! Just what I needed to put a massive smile on my face, &
relax me as I entered my test & it worked! I stayed focused & calm through the whole test!! Being a member of the Dream Team last year has taught me many things & I could not put a price on what I have learnt. It has been one of the best things I have done for myself. The difference that my family & friends can see in me from the start of 2012 to the end was amazing. Not only have I learnt tools to control my nerves & fears, I have also learnt how to correctly set goals so they will be achieved, & how to improve in all areas of my life, not just riding. I am really looking forward to the future & have mapped out an exciting competition plan for both of my horses & have many great dreams & plans ahead of me! I strongly recommend the Dream Team to anyone that feels there is something holding them back from reaching their goals & want to achieve better things in their riding.

NEED TO KNOW | NATASHA ALTHOFF GOALS! Wow - are we really 6 months into the year already! How do you feel? Have you accomplished all you set out to achieve? Are you excited about what exciting new goals you will hit this month in June?! Only one months left until your half yearly goals need to be ticked off! How are you going with that!??!?!?! I know for me this has been a very exciting start to 2013. Did I get every goal on my list for all 5 parts to my life?! No – if I did, I didn’t set them high enough! But I am on the right track, and many were reached or exceeded. How about you? You see sometimes if people don’t reach their goals they give up. Give in. Forget about it. Is that you? For me, I get hungrier, needier and more passionate and excited about reaching it! You see, it is NEVER about the goal. The goal is empty and meaningless. It is always about the journey, who you are and what you did on the way. For me I can honestly say every day during the last 5 months has been passionate, fun and educational. I faithfully write in my diary every night and I have a tick list of my five values: 1.
Commitment
2.
Passion
3.
Dedication
4.
Contribution
5.
Success
Every day was I committed to my goals, my task lists, my action lists and living congruently to the person I want to be, and the life I want to have. Was I passionate about what I did, and did I passionately go through my day uplifting others along the way? Was I dedicated to being my best and asking others be their best around me? Did I contribute in some way to making someone else's day better – a big smile to the stranger on the street looking sad, a kind word to someone who looked down, an uplifting compliment to a member of my team who needed to remember how truly amazing they are? Did I achieve in a small way or a big way a step towards the success I want to achieve in my life? A ride where the horse is stronger and better and will score more in the next test, finishing a part of the website to make it even more awesome for my fabulous clients? What about you? What do you stand for? Commit to? And hold yourself accountable to?
Check out all the Success Stories and Feedback we have received this month at YRS HQ!!
As soon as I saw Natasha riding a sport Friesian= I knew I had to investigate : ) These horses are not very common in Namibia. I immediately began watching the YRS videos online and had to get more info about her programs. We live in Namibia (Africa) and although we have lots of farmers and ranchers here, there is very little in the way of horse instructors. So far, YRS has really encouraged us to go ahead and think more openmindedly about the future and riding. Thank you for giving us the riding tools we need : ) Elizabeth Hartmann

BOOK OF THE MONTH
THE SIMPLICITY OF DRESSAGE I don’t know about you, but I love to read. So I thought it would be really cool if we put together a Your Riding Success Book Club. This means every month we can read a book, and I will review if the following month on our website (click here for the book club page) and in the magazine, and we can have a discussion on Facebook, and I am happy to answer any questions you have from reading the book As I know some people don’t like to read, I won’t be flooding the Your Riding Success Facebook group with talking about books, if not everyone is into it. So Super Kate has created a page on Facebook. So click here now to head over to the Facebook page now and join the group - I have already posted the book for this month “The Simplicity of Dressage” - Johann Hinnemann & Coby van Baalen If you would like to get yourself a copy, click here to purchase through Amazon now! :) Since it is taking so long to order the books... we thought we would give plenty of notice - this one won’t be reviewed until next month, so you have plenty of time to order it and read it so that you can share your thoughts! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts and share a book with you every month! To Your Reading Success,
Natasha Althoff
