YOUR RIDING SUCCESS TV QUESTION: THIS WEEK’S QUESTION IS FROM LISA, WHO ASKS - MY HANDS AND MY ARMS TEND TO BE STIFF WHEN I AM RIDING - HOW SHOULD I HAVE MY HANDS - I DON’T WANT THEM TO BE ALL FLOPPY BUT THIS ISN’T WORKING EITHER!
Hi riding superstars! We are so excited to bring you this week’s Your Riding Success TV - and yes, you did read correctly, I did say this WEEK! We have had such an overwhelming response and a huge amount of questions coming through for Your Riding Success TV, that we have decided to do it weekly!!! So, back to the question... stiff hands when riding... we have all been there (well, some of you will be thinking - stiff hands? my hands
are all floppy!) - but whatever way we do it, it takes a long time to work out what to do with our hands and our arms and our wrists to be really great riders! There is a fine balance between having your hands too stiff and being really hard on your horses mouth, and having them too floppy that you have no contact with the horses mouth and you may as well be riding with no bridle!
Click on the video below to see Natasha’s answer to this week’s YRS TV question!

YOUR RIDING SUCCESS TV You all know your elbows should be close to your sides, you all know that they should be bent... and you have probably heard that you should have a straight line along the reins from your horses mouth to your hands, and then your hands to your elbows, and then have your elbow bent. If you have your elbows straight, you have a line with your arms, and then another line to his mouth... which doesn’t work!! When you have the right line, you can do little half halts and really feel what the horse is doing. Lots of people also have their hands too low... so rather than think where should I have my hands and what should I be doing... think that you want to be able to feel your horses mouth no matter what you are doing. If your hand is hard then you can’t feel as much what the horse is doing, and it is also really harsh on the horses mouth!
On the other hand, if you have a big loop in the reins you have no contact! It’s all about positive tension... have enough contact without being too tense. Think of it as like holding a glass of water - too tight and the glass smashes, too loose and the glass falls out of your hand! Keep playing - the whole idea of dressage is to embrace and search the unknown - you are not meant to understand it all straight away! Have an attitude of curiosity and keep trying - look at the top riders and see how they do it, so you have in your mind how it is supposed to look! Have fun - good luck to you guys, and make sure you have a super week! If you have any other questions, make sure you contact me - info@yourridingsuccess.com To Your Success,

FROM THE HORSES MOUTH | ABE’S PERSPECTIVE Hey super riders! My name is Abe and I am Natasha’s superstar Friesian stallion and her one and only horse she likes to ride. I told her I thought it was very unfair that she was the only one to share how to ride - as lets’ face it... I’m the one that really makes it all happen - so this is my chance to teach you how to really ride a horse... with advice straight from the horses mouth!
Hello there riders! How are you?!?! I am feeling fabulous... How is your riding going? I am going great! Tash went away for a bit and I really enjoyed my break. Now she is back... and as much as I like doing nothing, it is fun to get back into training and work my body! ...don't tell Tash though but wow! I am in FULL Weight training! Tash says it’s the baby but I heard the baby weighs 300g so I don't know where the extra 10kg has come from!!! :) I heard Tash did a Your Riding Success TV episode on having still hands so I thought I would add my views on the matter! It’s funny - as Tash has improved her riding and her hand and arm connection, my head and neck connection has also improved. I had a chat to Tambo - Natasha's first dressage horse - and he told me how Tash had a very bad connection to begin with.

FROM THE HORSES MOUTH | ABE’S PERSPECTIVE Tash was trying so hard to make it right that she would hold the connection too tight and too blocked, and then give it all away. Having a steady, soft, light but consistent connection the mouth takes a lot of time to practice and master. Every year Tash gets better and better at riding without the hand and a lot more with the seat and legs.
you are doing and we don't want to be nagged incessantly, or pulled without it meaning something. Tash gave great advice when she said just feel it. You can feel what we are doing if you take the time. You will feel us wanting to stretch the contact down, or perhaps we are a bit stiff to one side and you can bend us that way... but feel when we then give and follow forward with your hand.
They say riding should be 70% seat, 25% legs, 5% hands. Tash is getting there now but it took her 15 years. Up until then it’s us horses that need to put up with you learning it.
Above all I like to think my job is to help my rider understand it. I was already a Grand Prix horse I just had to help Tash understand it and learn to communicate to me what she wanted.
The best advice I can give you is please remember it’s our mouth, we can feel what
I am understanding and patient and loving towards her learning as most of us horses are. If you do your best we will do our best and we all enjoy the journey together. To Your Success,
Abe

FROM THE EXPERTS | NATASHA ALTHOFF
THE RIDER IN ALL OF US People often say things to me like – “It’s ok for you to be motivated to ride”, “You ride so well”, or “It comes so easy for you” I could bore you all with the tales of woe I have of failed dressage tests, eliminations, tears, frustrations and thoughts of giving up. I am human like everyone else and I have emotions like everyone else. Whenever people say the phrase to me “I wish I could ride like you, but I never could” I am reminded of one of my favourite poems by Marianne Williamson. It begins with:
Our Deepest Fear By Marianne Williamson Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness That most frightens us. We ask ourselves Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? So I ask you out there- Riders who may have beliefs they couldn’t, shouldn’t, wouldn’t and didn’t to me are riders who are afraid to step into their own light. I ask you as Marianne does - who are you not to be brilliant, amazing, fabulous riders? What is standing in your way? We all have lives and things that could be roadblocks if we allowed them to be. What if we didn’t? A question I love to ask my clients is “What would you do if you were guaranteed not to fail?” They look at me and say “What do you mean if I could not fail?” I mean if I had a magic wand and I could guarantee
success, what would you do? Inevitably there is a lot more the client would start, do and finish with this guarantee of success. Then I ask them, wow your life would be a lot different wouldn’t it? I then ask them to remind me if they did do everything they would do if they were guaranteed success and if they did fail, what atrocities would occur? By then I can get a smile as they make the connection- nothing bad would happen. In fact sitting back doing nothing is a lot worse than stepping up, having a go and failing. As by sitting back and doing nothing gets you guaranteed failure and nothing as you never stepped up and had a go in the first place. Let’s consider a rider who is riding HRCAV and is thinking about doing an EA official test for the first time. They are afraid of the EA test as they are not sure of how tough the judge will judge, if they will come last, how to ride in the warm-up with top riders and whatever else they have running through their head. So they might decide the EA test is too overwhelming and they stay in HRCAV. They wish of becoming a Grand Prix rider but the fear of starting something new is too much and they tell themselves the story that they were never good enough (which we know is simply not true!) Compare with the rider that in spite of those concerns decides to step up and have a go. This rider goes to their first EA test and maybe the judge does mark hard and they do come last and they do make a mistake in the warm-up and cut off another rider. Now two things can happen. They can make that one event mean they should never have tried EA, they are not good enough and never will be and to play small from now on. Or they could realise to be the rider they already are, the good, fabulous rider that they already are they need to learn and grow from the event and go out there again and try again. It’s in the persistence, practice, perseverance and patience that good riders become great.

All those things I listed above I did when I started out in EA. I came last, I got eliminated, I had such a naughty horse he took off in the middle of my prelim test and galloped around Werribee upsetting everyone else’s tests and FEI riders complained about me and the EA committee rang my instructor to get confirmation that would not happen again or they would have to take steps towards me. I’ve had it all! Really!!!! :) But the only difference between me who kept getting up and getting on with it and riders that gave up and hid from their light is my passion to be great. So who taught you that you couldn’t be all you can be? We normally learn this when we are young and it’s perpetuated into adulthood. Do you remember when you were small? When you could dream unfettered and could become anything you wanted to be? When you ask a 5 year old what they want to be when they grow up and they say “an astronaut”. They don’t say “an astronaut ... but I would never be good enough so I am going to work in a job I hate to pay the bills”. They simply say what their dream is without the limits of what they believe their potential to achieve it is. The “I’m not good enough to do it” comes later, and it’s not real. You must guard your dreams with everything you’ve got. Nobody can say you can or can’t except for you, and if you believe you can, you will. It’s that simple! I look forward to you all stepping up and stepping into the magnificent versions of yourselves that are already within you.

I have loved horses since I was 10 years old, and was given my first horse when I was 15. I have never stopped riding…through school years, after my father died, when I was at uni, when I was married, while I’ve been working……I just kept riding for the absolute joy of it. Imagine my dismay at 51 years of age, when I really wondered whether I wanted to keep riding! If you have horses long enough, you will have to say good-bye to your companions eventually. I said good-bye to one dear horse and thought I’d never stop crying….but life goes on and so do the challenges. Then I had to say good-bye to a very special horse in my life…I stroked his beautiful black coat before he was buried and wished I could bring him back.
Then, my lovely palomino horse had a series of lamenesses and I felt like screaming!!! And
then….I had to have one of the most challenging, yet wonderful horses I have had put down early this year. I stroked his beautiful big neck as his life ended and sobbed and wailed. Oh…so much grief and sadness. With every loved friend that died, so did my dreams and hopes. Good things do happen in life though. My lovely big palomino, Alex, has recovered from his lameness and is rideable. But despite this, earlier this year I was still completely lacking in motivation to ride. I found the Breakthrough workshop information via the Ebony Park website (magnificent Friesian stallions are rather dandy eye candy!). I applied for a course scholarship and was very grateful to

be offered a partial scholarship and attended the weekend course.
Tash asked all the attendees why they had come. I said “I want to feel excited again”. The series of exercises we did over the weekend helped me rediscover my passion, find a place for my grief, and make new goals. I found reasons to ride that were stronger than the old rider’s excuses (it’s too hot/cold/windy/rainy, I feel tired/upset/headachey, I’m too busy/distracted/sad). It’s amazing how simple things can make such an impact on the psyche. Setting achievable, yet challenging goals is a very powerful motivator. My 6 month goal is to ride a medium test at the Masters’ Games in October. I had not ridden a dressage test on Alex in 5 years and Tash had set us all a 4 week challenge.
My goal was to ride a dressage test by the end of that 4 weeks! And I did! Hooray! We didn’t place…..and while I was disappointed, I thought “I will try harder next time”. Next competition, we came 2nd and 8th in good company! HOORAY!!! I can’t wait for the next competition. I’m having lessons, I am learning, I am determined. I am excited!!! The Breakthrough workshop achieved exactly what I had hoped for! I’M EXCITED!!!! :) -- Ruth

NEED TO KNOW | NATASHA ALTHOFF RIDING IS EASY IN THEORY I have just returned from an inspiring and exhilarating lesson with Heath Ryan. As he said during my lesson – I haven’t learnt anything today! I’ve just been reminded of things I already knew.
When you are learning something new with your riding, you need to remember to break it down before you put it all together. Can you do each thing separately to start off with?
You get that riding is easy in theory. You read a book, you know how to ride a horse – yes? no? :)
For example a trot leg yield:
The thing with riding is that you have to remember everything. You need to remember to do 10 things, all at the same time, and sometimes we struggle with that. Take my one time tempis. I used to say “Oh my god, I have to keep him straight, AND keep him collected, AND keep him active, AND keep him soft, AND let go with the hand, AND not move my body, AND relax, AND don’t override AND COUNT TIL 15!!!!!!! OMG!!!!!” Haha :) You see: I can keep him straight – check I can keep him collected – check I can keep him active – check I can keep him soft – check I can let go with the hand – check I can not move my body – check I can relax – check I can not over ride him – check And last time I checked I could count til 15 – check :) BUT all at the same time!!!!!!!!!! Like my brain was in overload! Do you remember when you first started to learn how to drive a car? You have to keep the car on the road AND look where you are going, AND watch traffic, AND stop at traffic lights, AND look out for other cars, AND check your speed, AND change gears, AND some people can talk while they do all of this!!!!!!
Can you control the trot? Can you keep the horse straight? Can you keep your body straight? Can you put leg on, to ask the horse to step sideways? Can you control the amount of sideways with your rein? Can you keep your reins and legs still and only use them when needed? And once you can do all of the components, can you do it all together, all at the same time? Thats why doing anything at the walk is so much fun – because it is at a slower speed, you can practice putting it all together, thinking about all of the different things all at the same time, before it starts to happen so much faster – like in the canter. This is why I am OBSESSED with dressage! It’s such a thinking sport. It’s not a question of whether I can physically do it, it’s a matter of I need to develop my thinking, so that my body can unconsciously do it!!!!!!
Check out all the Success Stories and Feedback we have received this month at YRS HQ!!
Hi Tash, Your positive attitude and passion is really catching! The resources were great I have read all the material and watched all of the videos I could . This week I made a pact to each tuesday night bring both of them in and work the younger one and groom and trim feet on the mare. I also do this most weekends but want to aim for 3-4 nights a week after work eventually. Anyway thanks for the encouragement and I look forward to learning more, will let you know how I am travelling once I have watched the extra vids and printed the workbook.
I wish everyone fun and success in their journey of putting all of the different components together!!!! :) To Your Success,
Natasha Althoff

BOOK OF THE MONTH
THE SIMPLICITY OF DRESSAGE I don’t know about you, but I love to read. So I thought it would be really cool if we put together a Your Riding Success Book Club. This means every month we can read a book, and I will review if the following month on our website (click here for the book club page) and in the magazine, and we can have a discussion on Facebook, and I am happy to answer any questions you have from reading the book As I know some people don’t like to read, I won’t be flooding the Your Riding Success Facebook group with talking about books, if not everyone is into it. So Super Kate has created a page on Facebook. So click here now to head over to the Facebook page now and join the group - I have already posted the book for this month - “The Simplicity of Dressage” by Johan Himmemann & Coby van Baalen. If you would like to get yourself a copy, click here to purchase through Amazon now! :) Since it is taking so long to order the books... we thought we would give plenty of notice - this one won’t be reviewed for a month or so, so you have plenty of time to order it and read it so that you can share your thoughts! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts and share a book with you every month! To Your Reading Success,
Natasha Althoff
