FROM THE HORSES MOUTH | ABE’S Hey super riders! My name is Abe and I am Natasha’s superstar Friesian stallion and her one and only horse she likes to ride. I told her I thought it was very unfair that she was the only one to share how to ride - as lets’ face it... I’m the one that really makes it all happen - so this is my chance to teach you how to really ride a horse... with advice straight from the horses mouth!
Hey Friesian Lovers!! How are you all doing this month? I am ok! Tash is getting bigger and bigger and that means she walks a lot more than we used too, so that’s fun. You could say I'm getting a bit of a holiday which is good, as I heard Tash's plans for 2014!!!! OMG I'm tired already just thinking about it! I h e a r d Ta s h w e n t t o Horseland Narre Warren last week and did a talk on Riding Success, and I thought if anyone is an expert on Riding Success it’s me! Considering I got her to where she is today! So I wanted to give you my 4 steps for riding success. 1. Get a really steady, calm, balanced seat.
You can't expect us to do all the work and learn all the GP movements if you are bumping around up there jerking us in the mouth every stride, and wanting us to keep a steady head if you can't keep a steady hand. We understand you need to do the hours and get good at your seat, so that’s ok, you will bounce and you will have unsteady hands. Just keep working on it every day so it gets a little bit better every time. 2. Get completely clear on the aids. If you aren't clear how can we be? So many riders want their horses to do shoulder in or leg yield - but you don't know
where you want us to go and how and when... so how can we know!?!? Ta s h s a y s " i f y o u c a n language it you can have it" So get complete clarity on what you want, how you want it, how you will know when you have it, so we can follow your lead. A confused rider is a confused horse so get clear first. 3. Don't push us. Tash is good at knowing why I'm not doing something sometimes it’s because I can - I just can't be bothered. Other times she gets I'm not doing it because it’s hard and I'm not strong enough and in the early days I just didn't get

FROM THE HORSES MOUTH | ABE’S PERSPECTIVE what she was asking - totally her fault! Take the time to get us strong progressively. And know when to push us - ie we are being lazy, and when to allow us to build up strength. If we are not doing it because we are confused, get clarity before you ask again and try to break the movement down into smaller, easier steps.
And remember the true success is our relationship and partnership. While I think I am perfect and I could easy win this thing you call the Olympics, apparently Tash thinks there may be other horses better than me!!! Either way, Tash and I still experience success, every time we get a little bit better a little bit smoother and a little bit easier in our GP work and
both Tash and I are very satisfied and feel successful. To Your Success,
Abe
4. Reward and appreciate our efforts - going around a 60 x 20m sandpit in circles is not our idea of heaven. Grass, breeding, oats, molasses, carrots... that’s what we love! So if you want us to go in circles for you make sure you reward and pat us often for trying for you! Even if it’s just a short walk give us a break to let us know if we are good, we will not have to work so hard. It’s not that hard. Feed us well, groom us, care for us, get lessons, work on you and on relaying your aids to us, build our strength slowly and progressively and we will do anything we are physically able for you.

FROM THE EXPERTS | NATASHA ALTHOFF
THE THREE PRINCIPLES OF SUCCESS I have a fantastic book called ‘Everyday Greatness’ written by Stephen R Covey and it talks about how to live a great life. Stephen talks about for ‘Everyday Greatness’ there are three everyday choices: 1. The choice to act 2. The choice of purpose 3. The choice for principles
So let’s look at the first one 1 The choice to act - The choice of: will we act upon life, or will we merely be acted upon. How does this apply to riding? Well, things that can happen to us when we are riding: “It’s raining”; “the polo was on”; “he shied”; “the judge didn’t like me” - these are all acts that when phrased like that are acted on us. As opposed to “thanks to the rain he was very easy to keep bending to left”; “Thanks to the polo he was forward and energetic”; “Due to my lack of outside rein and forward driving rein the horse shied, but I learnt from it and I will be more prepared next time”; “The judge likes to see perfection, thank God I have a great judge that pushes me to be an even better version of myself”.
2 The choice of purpose – to what ends, or purposes, will our daily choices lead. Every day we have choices, even if people perceive that they don’t. You have a choice to get up, a choice to go to work, a choice to ride, a choice to smile, a choice to be helpful. They are all choices. What are yours? This quote by an unknown author puts it perfectly: “Watch your thoughts, they become words. Watch your words, they become actions. Watch your actions, they become habits. Watch your habits, they become your character. Watch your character, it becomes your destiny.” So what are your everyday choices? What are your choices around health? Do you choose to fuel your body with nutritious food or choose to poison it with fat or cigarettes? What are your choices around love - do you choose to love and nurture your partner or children or do you choose to complain or sulk over a small thing that really doesn’t matter? In your riding do you choose to work hard and stay empowered going for your dreams, or do you choose to let the excuses come in and miss riding for the day? To what choices will your everyday choices lead? I wonder as the days become weeks and turn into months and years what life have you created? Is it the life you wanted?
Yes, all the above are reframes from NLP but they are also you in every situation choosing to act on life rather than life acting on you. And remember when you have choices and take actions you are powerful, but when you sit back and perceive no choice and no action you are powerless. So next time you feel like you want to complain, whinge or come up with an excuse - take a deep breath and act on life instead of being acted upon! A great quote by Dr. Randy Pausch is “we cannot change the cards we’re dealt, just how we play the hand” – so how will you play what you are dealt?

Looking at riding - the everyday act of riding, being with you horse, planning your goals and future for you and your horse, watching DVDs or reading books on riding or horse care. These are all everyday actions that will make the difference in the end to how you experience your riding. The Olympics start with riding today and learning today. And then it’s the sum of all those days that make it your reality. 3 The choice of principles – will we live our lives in accordance with proven principles or will we suffer the consequences of not doing so? What are your principles? Do you know? Do you live your life with integrity, respect, gratitude, humility, empathy, balance, courage, responsibility, discipline, contribution, vision and perseverance? Or do you allow fear, dishonesty, greed, ego and laziness to be a part of your life? When coaching, one of the most powerful change work I can do with a client is to realign their principles or values as we call them. Imagine someone who lived their life with fear, greed and suspicion as their three top principles and we change them to love, courage and contribution. Do you see how every thought, every decision, every thing in that clients life HAS to change as they live their life through different principles. So make sure you know yours. In riding especially do you value fear or courage? Do you experience empathy for your horse or do you ride as if it’s only about you? Are you disciplinary to yourself or do you only order it from your horse? Do you persevere when you hit a road bump or do you give up and get off? So to recap – act on life, don’t complain about the way it has acted on you. Every day make choices that will lead you to a life you want, it’s every day the counts, the little things all add up to big things. And thirdly live with proven principles of success rather than principles you are not proud of.

NEED TO KNOW | NATASHA ALTHOFF BACK YOURSELF 15 years ago, when I met my now husband, he told me I had to barrack for the Richmond Football Club. Me knowing nothing about football at the time, said I like yellow and black colours and tigers are cute – so ok! So for 15 years, I have watched them never win a grand final, and on each occasion I have gone to see them play they have lost. I was lucky enough to go again two weeks ago and witness a win! But win or lose I love to analyse the game. I don’t know the intricacies of football enough to pass judgement, but being a high performance coach I am so tempted to get into the change room … and …. no focus Tash! No, not get into the change room to watch them shower! But to tell them one of the biggest secrets to increase performance! Are you ready for it … because it works not only for football, but riding, business and pretty much life in general!
100% Back yourself. Right or wrong, good or bad, win or lose, BACK YOURSELF. When I went to watch the footy a couple of weeks ago, I watched time after time, when the player was confident, when the player was sure of himself, it is almost poetry in motion, they kick the ball and it just finds the next player, which finds the next, which finds the goal and score! Then the pressure comes on, t h e y H AV E t o k i c k i t , especially in the defence where if they stuff it up the other team could score a goal, and I see them second guess themselves, they hesitate, they over think, they

“Hi Tash! :) You know, as I am going through, watching all of your videos, one thing occurs to me... I AM NORMAL!!! LOL!!! Are you familiar with the old saying, "misery loves company"... well, it does! And although riding is never, ever misery, making riding mistakes sometimes is... and it's so nice to know that I am not alone! Your videos help me to see that all new riders, from all corners of the world, experience the same new rider issues. I am relieved knowing how normal my issues are.”

NEED TO KNOW | NATASHA ALTHOFF BACK YOURSELF scramble… and more often than not the other team gets possession and scores the goal. Now this play tends to come from the younger boys, the ones playing their first year or so. But I have also seen it with experienced players – they have just lost their confidence along the way. There are also young boys playing their first game in AFL that go out and score 5 goals and never second guess themselves. What I love about confidence is – if you scored 5 goals, then you would be confident, but you will never score 5 goals unless you are. It’s the classic chicken or the egg. Perhaps in your riding, you say if my horse goes well then I can trust him, but what if you need to trust first for him to go well? To me it’s the same in riding. Perhaps at home we are confident and secure and everything is going right, but then in a test the pressure is on, you have to get it AT that
moment, and do you rise to the occasion or falter? So do yourself a favour if you want to get better in your riding or performance or even in life – back yourself. It sounds so simple, but when you apply the principle it changes everything. To Your Success,
Natasha Althoff

“Hi there, just wanted to say thanks for your amazing videos. They have proved very helpful in both my riding and understanding of why we do things:). You make things so clear and easy to understand. I have submitted a question and believe (from email response) that it may be answered in the next Your Riding Success, I am VERY excited about this and can't wait to try out your expert suggestions!” -- Francie Simone

I started my riding journey in high school as part of the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme as horse riding as my “Sport. This was the only way I could have anything to do with horses as my dad had been a mounted Police Officer in Africa and had sustained a very nasty fall resulting in spinal damage. My parents did not want me to have anything to do with horses, even though I had been driving them crazy as a horse mad child... I attended the only riding school in Darwin and much to my mum and dads attempts at stopping me - I loved it. Mum and Dad finally gave in 3 years later and purchased an old Quarter Horse who had only played polocrosse called McKellar. All my dreams had come true. I finally had my own horse. I look back at some of the amazing things we did together like jumping bareback with a halter.
I was lucky enough to have 3 brilliant lessons on my big Grey TB Gilbert who had been off the track 18 months. 3 years later I lost both of my horses on the same day, and my life came crashing around me, I was lost and empty.
Over the years I moved onto off the track thoroughbreds as they were the easiest horses to come buy at the time and that I could afford. I started my showing career in the hack ring and had found my place - I was hooked. I got married, and was blessed with two amazing children. Whilst moving around Australia, in 2001 I had some major medical issues and my husband at the time left me. In 2005 I met Tash when she came to Darwin to give riding lessons.

12 months on a friend of mine found Ezabella, an 11 year old TB mare that was advertised as an up and going bombproof Show Hack. It was love at first sight. 2 weeks later she was on her way to Darwin... from Victoria. I had a fire in me again, I was getting excited that Ezzie and I were going to make an amazing team!! Let’s just say that we didn’t have the same idea and I ended up in Hospital a number of times from some very nasty falls. I was devastated, I was told that I was not a good enough rider for her, and I started to second guess my abilities in everything. I was told I was not to ride again or I would be in a wheel chair for the rest of my life. I felt numb to the world.
And then out of the blue I received a phone call from Tash asking how I was going, how was my riding going, and through this I found out about the Breakthrough to Your Riding Success Workshop that she was running for the first time. I couldn’t afford to fly to Melbourne at the time, so I participated via correspondence. Watching the DVD’s from the weekend I realised I was at the bottom of the barrel and that my life was falling apart around me. I had to do something; I had to get my life back on track. I joined the Dream Team and met the most amazing group of people. 8 months later I am back riding, I have set some AWSOME goals, have purchased a new horse that is just the most amazing boy, and my mare is going to have a baby. I have realised I am the only person that can make ME happy, and that I am responsible for the life I want to have. It’s not just my riding that has changed, my whole life has changed - I am more confident in everything that I do. I even competed in my first dressage competition in five years in September with an amazing 61.9% and best of all had a ball. Thank you Tash, Kate the amazing ladies that are part of the Dream Team. --Tammy

BOOK OF THE MONTH
DEBBIE McDONALD - RIDING THROUGH I don’t know about you, but I love to read. So I thought it would be really cool if we put together a Your Riding Success Book Club. This means every month we can read a book, and I will review if the following month on our website (click here for the book club page) and in the magazine, and we can have a discussion on Facebook, and I am happy to answer any questions you have from reading the book As I know some people don’t like to read, I won’t be flooding the Your Riding Success Facebook group with talking about books, if not everyone is into it. So Super Kate has created a page on Facebook. So click here now to head over to the Facebook page now and join the group - I have already posted the book for this month - “Debbie McDonald - Riding Through” by Debbie McDonald with Nancy Jaffer If you would like to get yourself a copy, click here to purchase through Amazon now! :) Since it is taking so long to order the books... we thought make it happen we would give plenty of notice - this one won’t be reviewed for a few months, so you have plenty of time to order it and read it so that you can share your thoughts! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts and share a book with you every few months! To Your Reading Success,
Natasha Althoff
