News From Holland - 5 Stallions Awarded Stud Licences Sape 381 Sport) also scored more than 80 points. He finished his riding test with 78 points and went on to add 80.5 points for the driving test and another 83.5 for the show-driving test. On Monday morning, five of the seven stallions taking the examination for in-harness disciplines in Ermelo made the grade and obtained the much coveted stud licence.
After approval Gerben was given the name Gerben 479. ‘In trot we would like to see a bit more scope in the front leg. In the driving tests he demonstrates a lot of ‘go’.
The riding test already revealed this to be a good crop with Gerke Z. (Norbert 444 Sport x Rindert 406 Sport) showing himself to be a real hit. This stallion also made an excellent impression in the in-harness tests so that he finished as the undisputed sensation of this Central Examination.
Gerben is a modern stallion radiating youth, a horse showing a lot of promise’, according to head of inspection Bauke de Boer. Stallion Fryso (Olgert 445 Sport x Doeke 287) was also approved and continues as Fonger 478, after scoring 79.5 points for driving and 75 points for the show-driving test and a total of 82.5 points for the riding test.
Gerke Z. collected 86 points in the riding test and on Monday morning he added 87 points for the driving test and 87.5 for the show-driving test. He has been registered under the name Hette 481. Gerben van de Olde Mette Moate (Doaitsen 420 Sport x
This stallion catches the eye with his excellent walk which he also demonstrated in the driving test. He needs to develop slightly more front in the driving disciplines.
Gerke van de Stierenweg (Norbert 444 Sport x Jelke 367) has been registered as Hessel 480 with a total of 77 points for driving and 76 for the show-driving test. ‘He seems to be a little laidback, but we suspect his huge body is somewhat to blame here because he stands at 1.72m. Therefore this examination could be a little premature for him and he needs time to develop more strength over the next year or so. But we have great faith in this stallion’, De Boer comments. Closing the ranks of the five newly-approved stallions for stud services is Haiko van ’t Oosterzand (Arjen 417 Sport x Lute 304 Sport) who will continue his life as Haike 482. He ended up with a score of 79 for the driving test and 71 for his showdriving test. ‘This stallion made a very positive impression under saddle showing a constant willingness to work. He has less aptitude for show-driving work but compensates with an interestingly low kinship percentage.’ Click here for videos!! Source: KFPS Website

We also have to finish starting Zorro and Hercules, so they are ready to go off and make some lucky rider's dream come true. We will be playing with one of our 3yo mares - Helena, who is out of Jantje by Elko, she is due to have a foal by Jorrit but if she shows promise in the dressage ring that will be her first and only foal she will carry, and we will start embryo transfer with her and keep her as a competition mare. We also look forward to finding the right owners for our only other two horses here that don't have their new mums (or dads) yet. They are Sienna and Arnie and you can find them on page 24-25. I look forward to welcoming you into the EP Family if you are the lucky one that becomes their new owner. I would also like to congratulate Brittany on her investment of Zephyrus (Abe x Dazzle 2013)! I have known Brittany for a while and couldn't be happier they are together! I hope you enjoy the photos of my maternity shoot with Abe, and I really look forward to sharing pics of the new addition to our family next month! Kind Kate’s Knowledge - Dehydration During the summer months, it is really important that your horse has a clean, fresh source of water at all times, as dehydration can happen on a hot day very quickly! This is especially true for foals, who together with being much smaller than adult horses, also have not yet developed great control mechanisms for temperature regulation and control. Horses that are worked too hard on hot days without water are also at risk.
1. Pinch Test
This is the most simple way to check if your horse is showing signs of dehydration. Simply pinch up the skin on your horses neck, and then let go - the longer it takes for your horses skin to spring back to its normal position, the more dehydrated your horse is. If it takes more than around 2 seconds, then your horse is probably getting dehydrated.
3. A m o u n t
Ok, so we know that our horses can get dehydrated easily, but how do we know if they are dehydrated? There are a number of steps that you can perform in order to work this out:
of Water
Consumed It is a good idea to monitor exactly how much water your horse drinks in a day. H o w e v e r, i f y o u h a v e automatic drinkers like we do in the paddocks and stables at Ebony Park, this is impossible!! So instead just make sure buckets always have plenty of fresh water in them, and that drinkers are always working!
Some horses sweat more than others, and therefore lose more water when they are worked, and need to drink more often. An average 500kg horse will drink at least 20 litres of water a day - if your horse is dehydrated and wont drink the water that you offer him, try adding molasses or apple juice to it to make it more tasty!
(this is because the blood has been pushed away from the area). The longer it takes for the gum to turn pink again, the more dehydrated your horse is. Again, if it takes more than 2 seconds, your horse is most likely dehydrated. You can also check the inside of your horses mouth for lack of moisture - dryness can be a sign of dehydration.
4. Eyes
The Pinch Test 2. Capillary Refill time
This is a good way to determine dehydration in a horse, but not necessarily the easiest. Lift your horses lip up so that you can see his gums, then press on the gum with your finger and let go once it has turned white
If the eyes of your horse appear sunken and dull, this can be a sign of dehydration. Horses and humans use the same strategies to help keep them cool, such as sweating and dilation of blood vessels near the skin, but humans are actually much more efficient at

Kind Kate’s Knowledge - Dehydration staying cool than horses. This is because horses have much less surface area to body weight (40% of the area humans do) and much larger muscles (which generate huge amounts of heat) than humans do! This means that horses are much more efficient at keeping warm in the colder months than we are, but not as good during the warmer months. Horses in heavy work on a hot day can sweat out around 12 liters an hour! If your horse is dehydrated, this is a lot of fluid to get back into him! Clinical dehydration is defined as a loss of 5% total body water this is 20 liters for a 500kg horse, and wouldn’t take very long for a horse being worked! Horse sweat also contains quite high levels of electrolytes - so when your horse is sweating, he is not only losing water, but also essential electrolytes that help to keep him hydrated, such as, sodium, chloride, potassium, and during prolonged periods of heavy sweating, calcium.
Ok, I’m freaking out now you say, I think my horse is dehydrated... but how do I treat it, and how do I prevent it happening again in the future?! Fluid loss as little as 1% bodyweight (5kg for a 500kg horse) can reduce performance. I know that 5kg sounds like a lot, but for your average 60kg human, 1% is only 600g! Coupled with electrolyte loss which occurs during sweating, this can lead to conditions such as ‘Tying Up’, where the horses thigh, gluteal and lower back muscles develop pain and stiffness due to damaged m u s c l e cells or ‘Thumps’ where the h o r s e basically g e t s hiccups (much more violently t h a n humans) f r o m spasmodic
diaphragm contractions that are synchronous with the heart beat (the flanks and sides of the horse have a fluttering motion). Is is a common belief that it is not a good idea to let a horse drink after exercise as the horse may colic. As long as the horse has stopped puffing and panting, they wont drink more than the volume of their stomach (15L). So as long as you only offer between 10-15L of water soon after exercise, you shouldn’t have a problem.

Kind Kate’s Knowledge - Dehydration You also need to make sure your horse is fit enough for the work you are making him do - unfit horses will fatigue and sweat more than fit horses. Work your horse up gradually to the level of work you would like to do. If your horse is hairy, clip his coat to prevent excess sweating. Provide a balanced electrolyte supplement in your horses feed on days that he is worked, or days that he sweats a lot. It is important to make sure that your horses everyday diet has the right balance of vitamins and minerals too. Providing your horse with ad lib access to hay or grass all the time is one of the best things that you can do! It doesn’t have to be high quality hay, it is mainly the fibre and the volume that is important. Fibre takes a long time to digest, and is kept in the hindgut for a long time after consumption so that it can ferment and digest. When there is a lot of fibre in the hindgut, this also retains a large volume of water, thus preventing your horse from dehydrating as easily!!
Basically, keeping your horse hydrated is just common sense and observation. If the unfortunate thing happens, and you believe your horse to be dehydrated, there are a number of things you can do to help him out. Firstly, get your horse into shade (this is particularly important for dark or black horses such as the Friesians, who absorb so much heat through their coats! For dark horses, it is a good idea on a hot day to either keep them in the stables and put them out at night, or put a white cotton rug on them during the day - this will reflect the sunlight and tend to keep them cooler. You can cool your horse with a fan and water (but avoid large muscle areas, as you don’t want to cool them down too quickly or they can seize up, just like human muscles. Give the horse free access to water, and add electrolytes to his feed, or give it to him in a paste (you can get electrolyte paste in tubes that look very much like worming paste). This will usually help the horse to
recover from mild to moderate dehydration, but just make sure you keep an eye on him to make sure he recovers properly. In cases of severe dehydration (and I certainly hope this doesn’t happen to you, but like I mentioned earlier, this may happen in foals or horses without access to a water supply), I would firstly call the vet! They will be able to give your horse IV (intravenous) fluid, or stomach tube your horse with fluid, and really monitor the condition of your horse to give him the best chance of recovery. I hope all of your horses stay happy and healthy over the summer months! Abe’s Perspective
Hey super riders! My name is Abe and I am Natasha’s superstar Friesian stallion and her one and only horse she likes to ride. I told her I thought it was very unfair that she was the only one to share how to ride - as lets’ face it... I’m the one that really makes it all happen - so this is my chance to teach you how to really ride a horse... with advice straight from the horses mouth! *Taken from November 2013 Your Riding Success Monthly. Tash’s Training Tip - 15 Step Checklist for 2013 I wish you a merry Christmas, I wish you a merry Christmas, I wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year… Merry Christmas!!!! :) I LOVE December!!! There is an excitement in the air! Everyone is happy and looking forward to the Christmas break, and there is an anticipation for the following year and what it will bring. As you think back over 2013 what are your thoughts? I always do a checklist over the year and do a debrief over the year. For this month I thought you might like the checklist... The only thing is, please email me and let me know how it has helped you!!!! Here it is:
15 Step Checklist for 2013
1. What did I achieve this year? You want to keep writing every little thing that you achieved. Learnt a canter transition off your seat, installed a gym habit, developed a closer relationship with your daughter? What ever it is, just start your mind in January and keep going …
2. Which goals did I achieve? Sometimes you achieve things that aren’t a goal. Hence the first list is EVERYTHING you achieved. This list is now specifically looking through your yearly goals you set for 2013 and checking them off.
3. How did I achieve my achievements? You need an evidence procedure for how you did it – so you can do it again! Perhaps it was digging deep and working harder when you wanted to give up, maybe it was seeing a new coach and learning something new which meant you could finally tick off your goal.
4. Which goals didn’t I achieve? We need to list all the goals you didn’t tick off so we can determine if they are still important and need to be on the list for next year.
5. Why didn’t I achieve them? Perhaps the goal became unimportant, perhaps you didn’t have enough knowledge or skills yet to get the success. Whatever it is - you need to know what you need to ensure success next time.
6. What made me happy this year? What gave you pleasure, made you smile, had you laughing? Maybe it’s seeing family, friends, holidays, going somewhere, new hobby?

Tash’s Training Tip - 15 Step Checklist for 2013 can read the pain I chose to be in and experience.
The main thing here – is there something in your life that constantly causes you pain? Whatever it is – you need to make sure you schedule it in again, and more of it if possible into your diary p l a n f o r n e x t y e a r. Remember the meaning of life is to experience as much joy and pleasure as possible in every moment!
7. How can I make sure I get even more happy moments? Like I said - schedule it in, I have done my diary for 2014 already and locked in dinner with some friends for March 2014.
8. What made me sad? I LOVE this one – I keep a diary, and when I look back at this year and what made me sad, I can’t think of many things – but in my diary, when I’m in it, you
Maybe you hate your job, or are always fighting with a friend, or feel bad when you see them. Whatever it is – if you can clearly remember being sad a lot because of a certain someone/something - then you need to do something about it! Again - life is for fun and enjoyment not pain and disappointment!
9. Looking back - should I have been sad? This is also remembering for next time if you are sad - to ask yourself will I remember this/will this really matter in a years time? If the answer is no, get over it and be happy now! Looking back - all the times I was sad were not a
time to be sad – I should have been celebrating, as the challenges made me a better woman today than if I hadn’t had them! Remember everything is an opportunity to grow!
10.What did I learn? Love this one! I have a book tally of how many books I read, also conferences I attended, people I met. Everything I learned about myself, riding, business, people, friendship, love, laughter, everything! What did you learn? Write it all down! You will be amazed at all your learning’s! If you don’t have many learning’s, perhaps that’s another thing to commit to for 2014. If you’re not growing you are dying, it is impossible to stand still!
11.W h a t h a v e n ’ t I learned? Did you repeat any mistakes? The universe will keep presenting the same challenge until you successfully overcome it. So what haven’t you learned yet? What do you need to change/accept/

This 3/4 Friesian colt is by the impressive 17.1hh Ebony Park Elko, and has inherited his fathers gorgeous movement, out of 1/2 Friesian mare Anika, who is by Grand Prix Friesian stallion Ebony Park Abe - so you are getting the bloodlines of two of our magnificent Friesian stallions with this colt! He has the bold, cheeky personality of his grandsire Abe, and we hope some of the height and magnificence of his sire Elko… and we can’t wait to see him in the dressage ring when he grows up!! Hey guys!!
Kate & Danielle’s Kickass Tips!
The last month has been a busy one for us! We have 2 geldings that have just turned 3 so we have just started their training! Hercules is a purebred gelding by Elko out of Tash’s competition mare Gjanna, and is a spunk! We have been lunging him in the arena, getting him used to all the gear, and Danielle has just started to lean over his back... over the next couple of weeks she will be starting to sit on him, riding him on the lunge, and then finally riding him without the lunge! Zorro is the other gelding we have been starting. He is a 3/4 gelding by Ebony Park Jorrit (and the first Jorrit baby we have broken in so we are very excited!) out of 1/2 Friesian mare Zip. 5 Minutes with Tineke Bartels Tineke Bartels is a dressage rider from the Netherlands, who won the silver medal in the Team Dressage Event at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. In the Individual Competition she finished in fifteenth position. Four years later Bartels repeated that feat - she competed in four Summer Olympics for her native country, starting in 1984. Her daughter Imke competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. Bartels was heavily injured on 7 November 2006 after she fell off her horse during a training. She fell with her head against a tree and needed a long time to recover... She is now a dressage director for events such as the European Dressage Championships, and was interviewed by the Dutch Press Agency (ANP) on the future of dressage in The Netherlands before the European Dressage Championships in August this year. Since the sale of Totilas, the Dutch dressage team crashed down from being unbeatable to just a medal "candidate". Bartels believes that The Netherlands can only keep its top position if it doesn't sell its best horses. Much has already been said about it and also at the European Championships in Rotterdam in August last year it was be a topic of discussion. In an unguarded moment the sale of the black wonder stallion Totilas caused a true shift in power. The new owner Paul Schockemรถhle helped bring Matthias Rath and Germany back into the saddle, pushed world champion Edward Gal off his throne and relegated The Netherlands from favourite to candidate. Moreover he fed the German self-confidence one year before the Games. That confidence had already grown well by the acquisition of a few special horses from Holland. "I share this worry," said Tineke Bartels who talks from experience and who is closely involved with the EU-CH organisation. "We have to think about a dressage horse fund. We have much riding skills here, but less horse power. It's a matter of money. Our breeding produces the best horses but the Dutch are dealers." This balancing out of the power has a big advantage. The European Championships have never been so unpredictable. "It will be super exciting and a huge battle will be fought," said Bartels. Probably the elusive will be the decisive factor. Is there home advantage? "Yes, you always do a bit more your best in front of a home crowd. If the judges catch a bit of the orange buzz as well, it'll help." Adelinde Cornelissen (Parzival), Edward Gal (Sisther de Jeu), Hans Peter Minderhoud (Nadine) and Sander Marijnissen (Moedwill) were the first dutch riders to inaugurate the new equestrian stadium in Kralingse Bos, which has a capacity of 7,000 seats. This is what they said of the European Championships before they competed - The European Dressage Championships will be a success when "we have all performed our best," said Gal. "If every one of us did their utmost," Cornelissen explained (Cornelissen went on to win gold in both Grand Prix and Grand Prix KUR events). "I can't add more to that," Minderhoud replied. "I hope to ride as well as possible," Marijnissen added. Bartels was a bit more bold in her statements. "There are gradations, but we have to go for gold. The kur to music, sold out. The feeling that is wasn't only up to us. Totilas, Parzival, minutes of goose bumps. Longer than ever. I'm looking forward to that." Congratulations to the dutch team for the bronze medal at the Olympics last year!! :) Source: Wikipedia, Eurodressage

FACTS
DOB: 06/02/1951 Country: Eindhoven, Holland Did You Know: Bartels had a riding accident in 2006 where the doctors diagnosed her with three broke bones of the neck vertebrae and a big cut on her face. Bartels did not lose her sense of humour, though, because when the doctor stitched up her face, she joked, "You don't have to be so precise, I'm already off the market." Bartels needed to wear a brace to support her neck for three months. Though she was in serious pain, and the recovery took quite some time, the damage was not permanent. 29

Jorrit is an exceptional dressage stallion that made it through to the very prestigious 70 day performance test for approved stallions. In the performance test in Holland, Jorrit was within days of being approved as a stallion but a muscle strain hindered his movement and was unfortunately eliminated late in the test. He was also awarded a breeding permit from the KFPS when they came out for the 2013 Keuring. This is only awarded to very select Friesian stallions who possess the desired characteristics of the breed. There are only a few Friesian stallions in Australia that hold a current KFPS permit, and Ebony Park is very proud to offer Ebony Park Jorrit to the discerning Friesian breeder. This permit is limited to only 20 mares so please book quickly and as Born 12/05/2003, 16.2hh, Jet Black early as possible to avoid disappointment! imported Friesian ster stallion By the Grand Prix Dutch Approved Dressage Friesian Jasper 366 Scored 82% for the IBOP (2009 Keuring) Foalbook ster stallion with a Current KFPS Breeding Permit for 2013-2014 Registration Number: 5280 0420 0305 315

Ebony Park Elko

Unfortunately, due to a paddock injury to his knee, Elko is no longer able to be ridden, and has been retired from the competition arena. Ebony Park is extremely disappointed and upset by this incident, however we are very happy that he is still able to be bred, and has still retained his breeding permit (not something to be taken lightly, as the KFPS are very strict about awarding breeding permits!). When Elko was able to be ridden he was destined to be Natasha’s Olympic Grand Prix horse. He had everything! Three amazing paces, the desire and trainable temperament, and was quick to learn and improve. In his short career he scored up to 72% in preliminary and gained 44 grading points qualifying him for the 2006 Australian Dressage Championships in Novice in only 2 months of competition.

Abe has had consistent results of over 62% at the Inter I level, and currently competing and winning at the Grand Prix level in 2012 with scores over 60%, improving with each competition! Early in his career Abe was the horse to beat in Novice bringing home 3 Novice Championships with scores up to 71%. He also took home an Advanced Championship in 2008 and competed and qualified for the prestigious Dressage with the stars in the PSG and Inter I Kur in March 2010.
Abe is now establishing himself in Grand Prix and he hasn’t disappointed. His piaffe/passage is amazing and we are now waiting for him to develop the strength to catch up. This horse is destined for a legendary Grand Prix career. Ebony Park Abe is an exceptional stallion to ride. He is powerful and responsive and carries you through any situation with pride and attitude.
Born 29/03/2000, 16.2hh, jet black imported Friesian ster stallion.

First Friesian stallion in Australasia to Abe takes you into a test almost like a war horse taking compete and win at Grand Prix level in you into battle. He is proud, noble and loves to show off dressage. and be the centre of attention. Abe has been awarded the sports predicate from the KFPS. He is the first stallion in Australia to achieve the award due to his outstanding results in the dressage arena. Zeus of Ebony Park
Feel free to share this publication with your friends, family, club... anyone who might find its content useful.
Zeus is Elko’s first son that we have bred, and we have eagerly been waiting the years until he was old enough to work. At 5 1/2 he is already competing in Elementary level dressage, with scores over 68% and a Medium start expected late 2013! Zeus is a delight to work with, having an exceptional canter just like his father, and a swinging, easy trot. He is still taking time to mature with some growing to do, but in another year we are so excited to see where this boy is at! He has inherited the beautiful, willing Friesian temperament from both sire and dam. This will be Zeus’s third season standing at stud, with his first lot of gorgeous babies born last year, and a wonderful opportunity for people to get access to Elko’s bloodlines!
Born 22/11/2007, 16hh, jet black Friesian BBook1 stallion. By our imported Friesian stallion (who has a breeding permit) Elko van der Woalderhoeve Registration Number: AU0360 0420 0706 076

Ebony Park Dante
Feel free to share this publication with your friends, family, club... anyone who might find its content useful.
Dante is by Champion dutch stallion Norbert 444, who has won the prestigious Friesian Stallion Show in Holland for the last 2 years in a row – 2012 and 2013. We imported his gorgeous mother, Ebony Park Jantje from Holland, and within 2 months of his birth, Jantje was competed by Natasha, with three floating paces and one of the easiest horses to ride! Dante looks to be a superb mixture of sire and dam – he is solid, strong and powerful, at the same time being easy and willing to train. Natasha says this stallion is the definition of ‘easy’ – you get on and do nothing, and the horse performs exactly how you want underneath you. To handle he is quiet and obliging. He has great bloodlines and breed potential, and we can’t wait to breed him for the first time this year for some gorgeous foals in 2014! Dante was competed for the first time in February 2013 in Preliminary dressage – and what a superstar! It was his first time out ever, and he took it all in his stride, coming home with over 62%! We can’t wait to see what he does in the future on the dressage arena!
