Your Riding Success - Riding Program Do you know Natasha has a riding program dedicated to helping you get from Preliminary Dressage to Elementary Dressage in an easy to use, proven, step-bystep system!?!? It is a 12 month program that covers what you need to do as a rider, and what you need to do to train your horse, to progress easily and effortlessly through the grades!
Ok hands up if you think you understand, and more importantly find you are actually doing dressage well, and it is easy? If that’s you – don’t read on. You are not right for this program. I’m talking to you if you get frustrated by all the different ‘ways’ to do dressage. If you get confused by training different movements. If you want to progress in your riding but you get stuck. The Your Riding Success Riding Program is an online program designed to give you a step by step, easy-to-use formula to get from basics to elementary. This program is one part of the Dream Team Program, but due to overwhelming demand, we have decided to make this program available online as a separate program to the Dream Team. Each section has a workbook to work through and fill out, as well as a video split into manageable chunks. The Riding Program has been sold to members in over 6 countries including USA, G e r m a n y, H o n g K o n g , U K , A u s t r a l i a , Netherlands, Canada and even Namibia!! So if you are 'stuck' in a riding level and looking for answers, perhaps the Your Riding Success Riding Program is right for you! Kind Kate’s Knowledge - Summer Feeding
You know the year is moving into the summer months when your green pastures start to resemble dusty deserts, you seek shade at every chance you get and there are flies everywhere! Even though it doesn’t seem so bad this year so far, we are bound to get some warmer weather that will dry out EVERYTHING and we will be wishing for the rain to come back!! :) Changing seasons from lush spring into summer dryness offers nutritional challenges for all horse owners, but feeding your horses during summer does not need to cause you sleepless nights! Following are some simple guidelines for feeding your horses in summer that will leave both you and your horse satisfied and ready to enjoy the beautiful weather ahead.
Water As I explained last month, water is vital for horses throughout the year, with horses during the summer drinking up to 50 litres of water in a day! D u r i n g exercise, this amount increases further still, as water is lost through sweat and even just from your horse breathing. Therefore it is essential that your horse is provided a fresh, clean supply of water during the summer – troughs need to be cleaned regularly as algae can build up very quickly, and water should be kept in a shady place to avoid heating and evaporation. Here at Ebony Park, we have our water in concrete troughs that are automatically filled from a tank and checked twice a day for leaks to make sure our horses always have access to as much water as they like! Feeding – Forage is vital Horses not only need more water in the summer due to losses in sweat, they also take longer to cool down in
Ebony Park Friesian Magazine February 2014
the hot weather than in the cooler months. Therefore it is a good idea to feed your horse ‘cool’ feeds - in other words, feeds that are not going to make your horse’s body temperature rise too much, and therefore make your horse sweat unnecessarily. Feeds high in protein are the main problems - lupins, soybean meal and lucerne at high levels in the diet will generally be the problem feeds, as protein digestion produces heat in the gut of the horse, causing the core body temperature to rise. High protein levels in the diet also cause your horse to urinate more frequently in larger volumes to get rid of the toxic waste products formed by protein digestion. This can lead to dehydration more quickly than usual. Feeding hay will also increase your horse’s body temperature slightly; however, forage and hay are critical in maintaining a healthy digestive tract, and your horse should be given at least 1% of his bodyweight in forage/hay per day. It is very important to provide enough fibre and sufficient bulk to keep the
6
Kind Kate’s Knowledge - Summer Feeding digestive system moving, as falling below this amount can cause problems such as laminitis, colic, gastric ulcers and loss of condition, all of which are detrimental to the health and well-being of your horse. During times of drought, quantity rather than quality of roughage is important, and any gaps in nutrient or energy content can be supplemented with a hard feed or vitamin and mineral supplements. Fibre can also be fed to bulk up hard feeds, in the form of sugar-beet pulp, hulls of grains and seeds, bran and pollard, as well as commercial feeds such as Equibix, and others with a high chaff inclusion (or you can add chaff to feeds yourself!).
It would be lovely if every horse could have huge paddocks with plenty of forage in them (our horses are spoilt at Ebony Park as most of them share 10 acre paddocks!), however not all of us have that luxury. As your pasture dries and dies off, hay is in high demand to supplement your horses feed. Because hay becomes quite dusty in summer, a good idea when feeding is to dampen or soak hay for a couple of hours to minimise this dust and make the hay easier for your horse to munch on. When formulating a hard feed, it is tempting to use grains as a source of energy, and while they provide quick release energy important for horses in work, they increase the glycaemic response in your horse, effectively giving him a sugar 'high'. Replacing some of your horse's grain intake with fats and oils will reduce this sugar high, while providing him with enough energy to really go out and have some fun! Fat supplements such as oil, full fat soybean meal and rice bran are appropriate, with the energy in fat being three times more concentrated
Ebony Park Friesian Magazine February 2014
than grains, so less needs to be fed. As always, to allow your horses digestive system time to get used to feeds, any new components of yours horses ration need to be introduced slowly over 10-14 days. Walking for the last part of your ride and hosing or sponging your horse off is good practice, and no feed should be given to your horse until he is completely cool and his breathing has returned to normal. Electrolytes – not just salt As the year moves into summer, we are generally in the saddle a lot more due to the fantastic warmer weather - however, the chances of dehydration occurring in our horses increase dramatically at the onset of summer. When horses sweat, they lose not only water essential for hydration but also electrolytes – salts that are vital in tasks such as maintaining water balance and muscle function. These salts include your classic salt: sodium (Na) and chloride (Cl), which need to be provided in the diet every day, in addition to potassium (K) and
7
Kind Kate’s Knowledge - Summer Feeding
magnesium (Mg). All of these need to be replaced in the horse when he sweats to keep him hydrated and healthy. An oral electrolyte supplement is designed to match the composition of sweat (see Figure 1), and hence is essential for replenishing lost electrolyte levels following situations where sweating has occurred. You should be taking an electrolyte supplement with you to competitions as your horse will not only sweat during the competition, but many sweat while travelling and will need to bring their electrolyte levels up before competition to maintain balance of salts within the body and therefore optimum performance. A salt block should be available for consumption
by your horse at all times – white blocks (contains sodium and chloride) and red blocks (contains s o d i u m , chloride and other trace minerals) are the ones to use – blue salt blocks are for cattle, hence are less cost effective for horses as they contain different minerals. If your horse does not like the texture of salt blocks and therefore does not utilise them, provide 30g loose salt (not iodised) in the feed daily. Remember, it is important to make sure your horse has access to water especially after giving electrolytes and salt as these will make your horse thirsty! Supplements Vitamin and minerals generally need to be supplemented all through the year, as there are many that are not provided for in pasture and hay. In the summer, dry hay and grains are especially deficient in these important nutrients. To fill these gaps a good
Ebony Park Friesian Magazine February 2014
quality vitamin and mineral supplement should be used. If using a commercial feed, generally the use of multivitamins are not required as long as you follow the directions on the bag. Problems Feed will go ‘off’ more quickly during the hotter weather, especially when additives such as molasses, water or oil are used. Therefore these types of additives should be included just before feeding your horse, and if your horse is a ‘trickle feeder’ – that is, he eats his feed very slowly – care must be taken as to where your horse is fed and how much is added to avoid the feed becoming rancid or going off. As pasture dries and diminishes from the paddock out, at any sign of moisture, it will be the weeds that are the first to flourish - pastures riddled with weeds tend to look "horsesick" - that is, there are bare patches in the ground where the pasture used to be, and clumps of uneaten green that unfortunately contain mostly weeds. Weeds can contain toxins that cause
8
Kind Kate’s Knowledge - Summer Feeding problems (such as stringhalt) when eaten in excessive amounts. Ensuring adequate forage is given to your horse in the form of hay is important not only for digestive function, but also so he does not seek to eat plants that are not good for his health and well-being. Horses may sample plants in times of diminished pasture, which would usually be ignored when pasture is plentiful. Horses that graze continuously on short pasture may take in excess sand, which can potentially accumulate and cause a blockage in the bowel. To help offload this sand from the hindgut, feeding psyllium husks (around 500g, two consecutive days in every month) is thought to help offload sand from the hindgut and improve motility by a process known as agglutination, causing
sand granules to bond to the psyllium and move through the gut and into the outside world. It is important to check feeds for mould, especially h a y. W h e n p l a n t s a r e stressed during the summer months by lack of moisture, mould can colonise grains and hay stems. The toxins produced by these moulds can make your horse very sick, causing problems such as colic, respiratory disease and even death if consumed in high enough amounts. The most important thing to remember that each horse is an individual - you can formulate a generalised feed for your horse, but only you can see how he or she responds to that feed - have a general feed plan made up, and then tweak it according to the horse. Even with the Friesians here at Ebony Park, who generally don’t need to be fed as much as for example a thoroughbred, there are individuals that need to be fed more than others, or who are slower eaters and therefore may get food stolen off them, or who are
Ebony Park Friesian Magazine February 2014
just lower in the pecking order. We tend to classify and separate our horses into great doers, good doers and ok doers, and condition score our horses every week to make sure there aren’t any falling under the radar. If you have trouble condition scoring your horse because you see him every day and find it hard to pick up differences in condition, a really good idea is to take photos once per week and compare them week by week, and even month by month. Ensuring you are careful with how and what you feed your horse will keep your horse healthy, allowing you to enjoy the long summer d a y s t o g e t h e r. J u s t remember - a healthy horse is a happy horse! If you have any questions about feeding your horse in the summer months, make sure you email me at info@ebonyparkstud.com.au

Abe’s Perspective
Hey super riders! My name is Abe and I am Natasha’s superstar Friesian stallion and her one and only horse she likes to ride. I told her I thought it was very unfair that she was the only one to share how to ride - as lets’ face it... I’m the one that really makes it all happen - so this is my chance to teach you how to really ride a horse... with advice straight from the horses mouth!
Hey Friesian Lovers!! I am really excited, my official title is now "Uncle Abe” - I love the new edition to the herd, Danika! I am very excited to be back in the competition arena! I had my first comp back after a 6 month break and I did brilliantly! Just ask me! I won the Grand Prix scoring a 7 for my new and improved passage! It was great to have Tash back in the saddle, it had been 5 weeks since she had given birth and only 3 weeks since she had been back training me. It's so funny though! Tash is always at me to be fit and strong and train harder, so I get even stronger and more supple... and guess
what!?!?!?! Now Tash has to train! Tash said she put on 25kg in the pregnancy and boy did I feel every kilo especially when she wanted me to carry all that weight in the passage.
athlete - so haha now she knows what I feel like as she also has to limit her intake of
She has already lost 15kg with another 10kg to lose and it’s funny to see her in the gym and watching her diet. She used to eat as much chocolate as she wanted... and then not let me eat as much apples and scoops of James and Son feed as I wanted! She said I couldn't have too much because I was an Tash, Danika and Abe
Ebony Park Friesian Magazine February 2014
12
Abe’s Perspective I have also told her - hey don't expect me to be balanced and off the forehand if you can't control your balance and seat. Something happened to Ta s h ' s s t o m a c h i n t h e pregnancy - they call it a 2cm abdominal separation and because of that she has to work and train extra hard to get her abs back for riding. She is bouncing around up there and not able to go with me as much as she used to, so she has now taken her stirrups away and is doing no stirrup work on every horse to really regain her strength and core. I'm glad she as a rider understands that she has to do the work, to be the fit and supple rider she needs to be, in order for me to do my work correctly. I know it's hard for her, and can be frustrating at times, but I know she knows every week, as long as she trains hard and keeps working at it, it will get better and better... it had better get better!! We have “Dressage With The Stars coming up in 7 weeks, and I want to go really well there, so she had better not let me down there's a big crowd and we have to impress!
Either way, even if we don't go well, I still get my oats at the end of the night, so I'm happy. The other thing I know Tash is working on, is keeping her mind focussed on riding me when she is away from Danika. Apparently she has all these mummy hormones running around that makes her stress slightly, and think about who is looking after Danika and if Danika is ok. But when she is riding me she needs to remain completely focussed and in the moment of each stride to make sure we can do our best.
At the end of the day, she and I are a team, and we both work hard to be the best athletes we can be, and to keep our minds focussed on each other, so we can do the best job possible. Until next time enjoy your riding and give your horse a carrot for me! :) To Your Success,
Abe
Lucky she is practised in her competition mindset, so she can empty her mind of everything personal to her, and just focus on the job at hand... apparently I am meant to do that too, but sometimes I get distracted by a pretty mare or start thinking about carrots, and then I miss some half halts, and sometimes miss the changes... something Tash gets very angry about!!

Tash’s Training Tip - Out With The Old, In With The New Happy New Everybody!!!! :)
Ye a r
I trust you are having an amazing January, and are working hard on those goals! I love a new year! There is so much anticipation and energy to make this year your best year ever! One of the things that is so important, is the concept of starting anew. I was sitting with my gorgeous mother-in-law the other day, in her house that she has lived in with her husband and three sons for nearly 40 years.
It is a lovely house, and she was telling me... yet again... that she was 'wanting' to throw out the clutter in the house, but she couldn't bring herself to do it.
There was old games, old videos, old books, and the biggest point of discussion was her medical journals and medical books she had accumulated from over 40 years of being a nurse.
Her house is like many houses out there I think, which hold the memories of a lifetime. In particular we were talking about these two bookcases that take up an entire wall of the living room, and are filled with - I argued - things she would 'never' use again.
After joking around for a couple of weeks - me saying if you need to look up something medical you can use google, and you can get all the books on your iPad - you don’t need to keep them - I finally stared at her and said "You know why you’re not throwing it out, don’t you? And you get that it has nothing to do with whether or not you can find the information or not?"
She argued she 'might' need them. :)
She looked back at me and said “Yes”. I said “You aren’t concerned at all with the objects, you are concerned with what the objects represent”. She said “Yes” again. I asked her - “20 years ago what were you?” She said “A
Ebony Park Friesian Magazine February 2014
14
Tash’s Training Tip - Out With The Old, In With The New nurse”. I said “That’s right, now what are you?” She took a while to answer... then said slowly “A grandma?” I said “Effing hell yes you are a grandma, and not only are you a grandma - what grandma are you?” She said “a good grandma?” “No - you’re not a good grandma, you’re the best grandma in the world, so what would the best grandma in the world have on the shelves of her bookcase? Would she have medical journals and books?” She said “No - she would have pictures of the grandchildren” “Exactly - she would! So why do you have the books?” And she knew ah ha - I don’t need the books. Are you the same? Hanging on to something old? An old identity? An old you? I used to have jeans I wore when I was 16 years old, they were my favourite
jeans, and I said as long as I can still fit into my old jeans, I am ok! But should a 32 year old have a 16 year old body? I don't know? But I do know comparing myself to who I was, should not determine my future. Every Christmas, my husband and I go through a de-clutter of the house clothes out, books out, things out. If we haven’t used it, we are not going to use it. The pikelet maker we never used - out.
Ebony Park Friesian Magazine February 2014
Some people say oh, what a waste, you can't do that, you paid money for that. So what if I did?!??! I paid money for it at a time when I wanted pikelets, now I don’t, so I have no need for it any more. So what are you hanging onto? I love this principle especially when you think about it in regards to riding and horses. With horses you can get a lot of clutter - the jumping saddle you don’t use, the old feeder that is broken but you still keep. What I find even more interesting is the ‘unseen’
15
Tash’s Training Tip - Out With The Old, In With The New clutter. You know what I am talking about! The clutter of old beliefs, old lessons, old memories. The clutter that reminds you you fell off last time you cantered, the clutter of horse riding is dangerous, or perhaps the clutter of I can never stay calm at competitions, or I always ride bad in dressage tests. I play this game with myself all the time when I ask myself - if I suddenly got amnesia - so had no memories, ideas, beliefs or
strategies in place for something - would I still be feeling this way? Imagine if you have a certain fear of cantering well how do you know that - because of a past memory, and because a past memory is a deletion or a distortion, or a memory of a memory - how could it possibly be reality, and because of this deleted distortion of a memory, or a vague memory, you are letting it impact you NOW
and your future... well that gives me giggles! :) Doesn’t it give you giggles?!?!?!?!? I trust it does! So why are you hanging on to it?!?!? Well, like my amazing mother-in-law, at some level you are hanging on to what that memory represents. So why not let it go? It’s not who you are anymore anyway... is it? You are not that rider anymore, you are so much more than that. So this year - 2014 - give yourself the gift of letting go from all the clutter of your past, and your past ‘you’s’ and go embrace the new you, and the new memories and experiences. Have an amazing year! Please let me know if there is anything I can do for you - I am here to help!

Exciting Opportunity!
Ebony Park is offering you the incredible opportunity to own purebred Friesian stallion Ebony Park Jorrit (Jorrit fan stal Redia). In last year’s Keuring, he was judged to be the best purebred Friesian stallion in Victoria, winning the prize for most extravagant and impressive trot! Ebony Park has made this tough decision as we believe it is time to give someone else an opportunity to use his bloodline – many of our mares are related to him now as we have used him so much! Jorrit is an exceptional dressage stallion that made it through to the very prestigious 70 day performance test for approved stallions. In the performance test in Holland, Jorrit was within days of being approved
as a stallion but a muscle strain hindered his movement and was unfortunately eliminated late in the test. He was also awarded a breeding permit from the KFPS when they came out for the 2009 Keuring. This is only awarded to very select Friesian stallions who possess the desired characteristics of the breed. There are only a few Friesian stallions in Australia that hold a current KFPS permit. Jorrit was picked for his exceptional trot, extravagant c a n t e r, e x p r e s s i o n a n d engagement.

Jorrit is electric and extremely extravagant in his movement, he ses 26-02-014 lo C regularly scores 8’s for his canter work including medium canter and flying changes, and we are very excited about this stallions’ prospects in the future. His trot work is amazing to ride with such power and expression. His canter feels like you never hit the ground and it feels like you only need three canter strides to get from one side of the arena to the next. His paces and his kind sweet nature on the ground make him a very exciting stallion to have at Ebony Park. Jorrit will only be available to the best of homes. Finding the right home for all our horses is the most important thing, and Jorrit is no exception.

Delightful Danielle’s Tales
Hey
We are trying to find a new forever home for him (but secretly, I don’t really want him to leave he’s just such an awesome, easy foal, and good mates with my little guy, Lacoda!) He was gelded last week along with a couple of other foals, but seems to be taking it all in his stride and hasn’t seemed to notice that anything is missing :) Anyway, check out the photos of this awesome little man! He looks so cute - losing all of his baby fluff at the moment and his big boy coat is coming out just as dark as his mothers!! :) Born: 23/09/2013 Sire: Ebony Park Elko Dam: EP Anika (by Ebony Park Abe) Guys!! Can’t believe how quickly the first month of the year went - it’s February already!! The foals are all growing up so fast! I wanted to introduce to you one of our crossbred foals this month - Arnie! He is by Elko out of a mare who is by Abe… so he’s an Elko/Abe mix and just gorgeous!
Check him out also on page 27! :) Have a fabulous month and until next time!
Danielle

Arnie is one of the most sociable foals we have this year… he hangs out with all of the other foals equally!! He is also one of the friendliest foals we have - he loves scratches! This 3/4 Friesian colt is by the impressive 17.1hh Ebony Park Elko, and has inherited his fathers gorgeous movement, out of 1/2 Friesian mare Anika, who is by Grand Prix Friesian stallion Ebony Park Abe - so you are getting the bloodlines of two of our magnificent Friesian stallions with this colt! He has the bold, cheeky personality of his grandsire Abe, and we hope some of the height and magnificence of his sire Elko… and we can’t wait to see him in the dressage ring when he grows up!! Arnie is available on one of our payment plans, so if you think he is your next dressage horse, click here to go to his page on our website and register your interest (there’s also footage of him there!)!
5 Minutes with Annemarie Sanders-Keijzer Annemarie Sanders-Keijzer was a dressage rider from the Netherlands, who won the silver medal in the Team Dressage Event at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics in Spain. She did so alongside Tineke Bartels, Ellen Bontje, and Anky van Grunsven. In the individual competition Sanders finished in 40th position that year. She competed in three Summer Olympics for her native country, starting in 1984. One of her horses was Amon, who was one of the most important competition horses in dressage history. 32-year-old Amon, owned and ridden by Annemarie Sanders-Keyzer, died in 2000. With his departure he closed off the memory of dressage in the 80s. Amon, a Westfalian gelding by Angelo xx out of Dodona (s. Donar), was a full brother to Dr Reiner Klimke's golden horse Ahlerich. Bred by Herbert de Baey from Lemgo, Germany, Amon was purchased by Sanders-Keyzer at the 21st Westfalian auction in 1972 for 29,000 Deutsch Mark. As a 4-year-old he moved to The Netherlands, where he became a dominant dressage horse. The pair rode to the European Junior Riders Championship title and was bronze medallist at the European Young Riders Championships. They were six times Dutch Dressage Champion and three times did they conquer in the national equitation class. At the Olympic Games of Los Angeles, the combination was fourth with its team and 8th individually. Amon ended his career after the Games of Seoul in 1988 at age 20.
